[Music] do [Music] what's up everybody welcome to the snipe life where we look at creativity through the lens of christianity and tonight we're going to be looking at well and the very interesting book of uh the bible known as the gospel of john what do you think about that it's gonna be interesting for sure it's gonna be great we've got a lot of really great um kind of things to bring up and uh and stuff to talk about so this book is amazing and i can't wait to jump into it with you guys so here we go without further ado the gospel of john hello hope you guys are doing well let us know in the comments how you guys are feeling tonight what's up i'm gonna roll up my sleeve so i look um less awkward i guess um just making it more awkward a little bit maybe that's my real intention that's always your real intention so what are we doing tonight vanessa we're talking about the gospel of john but only chapter one because that's all time will permit because there's so many so much thickness in there yeah i feel like we could spend probably like three or four hours on the gospel of john and so uh it's gonna be good i'm excited about it for sure um so the reason why we picked john let's start there so we we find that the chosen generally follows the gospel of john in a lot of ways in a lot of the stories that they've kind of told and so we felt like it would be a good kind of jumping off point for our brand and our you know kind of thing along with the chosen since you guys love the chosen so much and obviously we do too and so yeah i thought it would be a great way to kind of jump into it and listen if you're feeling like hmm i'm not really sure if i want to stick around for this please please stick around i promise you it's going to be worth it there's so many trends there are so many gems within within john this first chapter it's it's really amazing and so even if you just think of season one episode uh or season two episode one of the chosen how they kind of did the parallels between the beginning of john's gospel and genesis we're going to see a lot of that tonight we're going to see a lot of really interesting stuff as we jump into it so let me say hi to a few people do you have anybody want to say hi team um m what's up em wait i put up uh durbin chris what's up durbania welcome welcome always welcome cool we've got sue suprov she is um is she one of our is it not showing me on here she's one of our patrons right or am i confused i would move along because i don't remember logan eric is for sure and patricia martin good to see you georgie as always good to see you hello very epic much love oh currently 1 45 a.m okay okay okay i see i see i see you guys so uh margie is ready for sure tonight uh to dig into john it must be your favorite book so we're excited about that and uh yeah let's just jump into it for sure so sue welcome to have you durbania says john actually sets out a timeline so it makes the chosen um uh it makes sense that the chosen would use it as a blueprint yeah for sure and we're going to call this series the blueprint for a lot of different reasons because again the chosen kind of uses as their blueprint but you know we can always all use the gospel as our blueprint for life right and this is the blueprint of how christ kind of moved to the world and all that so we're going to call this series uh the blueprint as we continue to do these and i'm not sure how often we'll do them probably either once every other week or once every week we'll try to figure that out as we go along but this will be an experiment and it'll be fun with all of us so excited you guys are here so first things first we're going to basically just start off with a general overview of what john looks like a couple key points that i wanted to point out um who wrote the book of john either john the elder yeah or john the disciple right so in the book of john we always hear this phrase right um john refers to himself as the disciple that jesus loved right we we hear that a lot throughout the book and so it's kind of debated a little bit i think generally the consensus is that john the disciple is the one who wrote the book but there is a chance in some way that john the elder who is another figure that we meet later on um could be the the writer of this book as well but either way i don't think it's a huge uh it's a huge contentious point i don't think it really matters because he says it so much right right and so i don't think it matters that much i tend to probably believe that it was john the disciple but again i don't think it matters uh i mean either disciples sure sure but it would be a little bit different between an apostle and disciple right so oh yeah yeah so it'd just be a little bit different but i don't think it would matter that much uh gorham says love from australia awesome thank you so much for being here um who drew these awesome emotes okay okay i have to stop and talk about this right before we get into john okay so my sister um actually drew all those emotes isn't that amazing um so if you guys see the pinned comment at the top you guys can uh kind of unfurl that comment and you'll see all of our amazing amazing emotes that my sister just got done we've got i'll just post them all right now so you guys can see them so if you look in the chat right now you'll see all these amazing emotes we've got mary magdalene we've got john the baptist we've got quintus in there uh we've got jesus of course we've got the moment when jesus is kind of redeeming mary um i unfortunately won't be able to put it on stream yard because they turn up yeah they turn up weird on stream yard for some reason so these are actually the names behind like the actual uh emotes there so if you do want to get these emotes and use them in our chat tonight or in the future at any time you guys can join us channel members and then those emotes will become available to you so if you do want to do that feel free for sure yeah there's one with john raising his fist that one's really good for sure she did an amazing amazing job she got those done for me probably in like a week and a half two weeks and so really really uh impressed by her she's been doing really awesome stuff so anyway uh okay the book of john wrote by either john the elder or john the disciple um who was this book written to i think generally um the book is written to kind of jews of that time but also there's kind of some gentile you know pieces in there too i think it's a general book for everybody but again a lot of what we're going to talk about even tonight a lot of what we're going to talk about tonight is going to be focused on how the people of the time the jewish people at the time specifically would have understood this book differently than we do when we read it for the first time right and so we're going to dig into it and um we're just going to read through it and we're going to stop at different parts we're going to discuss different parts and let me tell you we're not going to get every single piece of knowledge that there is to get from this chapter because there's just too much of it and so we're going to talk about what we find interesting and try to get through the whole chapter and just chat with you guys so let us know if you have any questions if you have any insight that you want to bring into it and um and we will make that happen for sure let me flip this around so i can see your comments a little bit better and uh yeah let's get into it so here we go we're gonna use our program that we always use we've got logos over here which is an amazing um bible study software um i can do things like this where i have a kind of a note right here that you know i can put any notes that i want i can also highlight um any words oops that's not what i wanted to do i can also highlight any words that i want right and um and just like i can look up the greek word if i wanted to so i can press the study and the greek word will come up right over here and then it'll show me where it is actually in the bible as well so the frequency of this word right this word which we're going to focus on first which is why i highlighted it this word right word means is logos in the greek right and we're going to talk about that in a little bit but you see the frequency that the word logos comes in um later in the bible so this is kind of like the timeline of the bible there's a lot of um the word word in hebrew and arabic or aramaic in the beginning of the bible but then at the end of bible in the greek there's a lot of them as well so anyway really really cool software if you guys do want to check that out there's a link in the description below that you guys can do that so let's start with these first three words in the beginning what does this make you think of genesis genesis right so this is an obvious allusion to to genesis right and how i want to kind of explain this i listened to tim tim mackey today who was one of the guys behind the bible the bible project he's an amazing amazing biblical scholar way smarter than i am and so really helps me to understand um you know this book a little bit better and this chapter specifically and so the way that he kind of explained it is this you know if i started a speech with four score and seven years ago or let's say i started it with i have a dream right you immediately recognize what i'm talking about right if i say foursquare and seven years ago i'm talking about abraham lincoln i'm talking about america i'm talking about um something that has to do with that right um but if i if i start it with i have a dream right or then you automatically think of civil rights movement you think of martin luther king jr you think of these different things right and so uh you know here's a more political one if i say make america great again right um then that's another that's another uh term that is linked to something else right and you can do this for millions and millions of things right so why would john start this gospel with in the beginning right i mean it's it's got to be purposeful right like it's not just a mistake it's not something that just happened right um so everything that we're looking at in the context of um of this whole thing um we have to look at it with the context of the jewish culture in mind the jewish education in mind including all of genesis right in the beginning of genesis and really looking at that to see how it all works together yeah durbin the software is really really good it's amazing i haven't even touched the surface of what it can do but yeah you should definitely definitely check it out where's the join button it's right below this video if you look right down there so um all right in the beginning was the word so now if we look let me open up this other tab and go to genesis or if we go to genesis right we see here let me make this a little bit bigger for you guys in the beginning right first first three words exactly the same and then we have god okay in the beginning was the word so again if this is a mirror right if this is a kind of a parallel then we have in the beginning was the word and what is the word right and that this is where we start the explanation of what the word is so the word is logos right which literally means word in greek um but it comes with a very significant meaning it almost means like wisdom or um like knowledge right um and so in the beginning was the word and the word was with god okay so the word um was with god he was he was there right the word this this word entity was there uh with god in the beginning uh but the word was god so let's stop there for a second why is this a little bit weird um i mean i feel like where is it that because there's so much in here yes there's a lot in here yeah he keeps calling back he keeps going back to like first he's referring to genesis then he goes back to proverbs what is it yep yeah we're going to jump there in a little bit there's proverbs 8 and then psalms 33 which we're going to jump to later but i feel like people would know what he's talking about yep um yeah keep going if we're going to move on to that later yeah we'll come there in a bit um but but what we're trying to grasp here right is that the parallels here are in the beginning was the word okay so the word is a parallel to god the word was with god and the word was god and so this seems like a very contrasting statement right how can the word be with god and yet is also god right yeah um and so i think a lot of us get confused at this statement because we're like that doesn't really make sense right but you're saying it's a call back to the trinity it is it definitely is and i think that well it's not a call back it's a it is a call back yes but it's also an explanation of the trinity within the new testament yeah and so here um we're going to get into a lot of stuff here um but this is kind of the beginning of john's setting up what's going to come later on um in in the gospel as well where he talks more explicitly about the trinity um like in like chapter 16 i think it is um but we're going to get kind of a deeper explanation later but um here he's kind of setting it all up and remember like this this first chapter it's kind of like people would proclaim it as like a prologue um and so it's kind of like us a poem that sets up this entire book and then we go into more of a narrative kind of style right so anyway so let's continue to read the word was with god and the word was god okay he was in the beginning with god again all things were made through him and without him was not anything made that was made okay so this word right this entity that we're calling the word was with god and he was god and in the beginning he was with god all things were made through him right so it's a hymn we're hearing that now all things were made through him and without him not anything was made that was made so nothing was made outside of this word so this word is a very prominent figure right in him was life and the life was the light of men and so here we're going to look at some interesting things for sure the reason why john is explaining the word this way right we all know that the word is jesus right the word is the messiah the christ that came to die on the cross to save our sins right we know that but the reason why john is setting this up is because he wants to root all of this stuff within the jewish culture okay and so when we're talking about these parallels of in the beginning was god in the beginning was the word that's what he's doing he's setting all of this up within a parallel for the jewish people so that they would have a better understanding now all of these verses here are also parallels to other parts of the bible as well a lot of these verses are pointing back to different key words and i love the way that tim mackey kind of explained it he said these are almost like hyperlinks yeah you know that phrase yeah yeah so like if you have if i send vanessa an email and i say click here to go to my website but the here is blue right and i can click on it like a button to bring me to whatever website i'm telling her to right that's basically what's happening here is he's he's kind of setting off these different moments um where people are like oh that harkens back to this yeah it it it just shows how biblically liter literate viewer you know like and it shows how much we're not that's what makes me sad because sometimes we we read this and it's confusing like it really is yeah yeah because you're like wait what who's who's the word what is word he beginning you know right right um but if we if we dig into the scriptures if we knew them like if we would memorize the scriptures you know like they would know exactly what part of the book what part of the torah they were talking about you know what i mean what bar part of the uh um historical you know like the culture yeah yeah and everything just like we would say right like like a very cultural thing right make america great again or whatever else right like these sayings that we hear all over the place these are things that like we can pinpoint where they're from but like we can't do that for jewish culture because first of all it's an ancient culture right 2 000 years ago like how are we supposed to know their day-to-day and exactly what they went through but also we don't know that that culture in general right if it's like if i went to africa and tried to just fit into their culture like i would have no idea how to do that right and so i wouldn't understand the things that they're talking about when they say oh you remember the bamboo tree right like or or hey you remember the palm tree like explicitly calling back to earlier like to the old testament yeah yeah exactly that's what i'm saying yeah like we don't get that because we didn't grow up memorizing the old old testament why not right and that's that's probably a failure on our part too is that we've gotten kind of lazy in our study but that's a whole other subject for a whole nother day so anyway we're like two versus it so let's continue to go uh a point that i want to point here in verse four and five in him was life and the life was the light of men the light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it so we wanna kind of stretch this out a little bit so we're gonna say life right equals light okay so light equals life life equals light they are the same interchangeable right here in in john's gospel and so what he's basically saying here is um is when i say light i want you to think of life and when i when i say life i want you to think of light they're they're coexisting here so it's very important to have that mentality as we're reading through this now the light shines in the darkness so the light is invading the darkness right and so as the again let's kind of follow this all the way through we have the word right the word becomes then the light and then the light is the life and so jesus is all of these things right jesus is the word who is the light and then jesus delivers life right uh jesus again genesis god speaks life is uh he invades the the the darkness there was nothing everything was void right yeah and then he creates life exactly yeah 100 and um and this is extremely interesting right because if we if we think through everything here right we have light and then life right and then we have darkness is the antithesis of light right but then what is the antithesis that's kind of being um it's kind of being perpetrated here um but it's not said right we have light life darkness and death right and so when we fill those things in and we understand that darkness brings death light brings life and jesus is that life and he's trying to conquer death right and we talked about this a little bit in one of our one of our most recent videos we talked about the second adam right and so jesus again is a parallel to adam adam comes and he is he is the man that is supposed to be uh kind of the ruler of earth right he is supposed to rule with god together and yet he fails he chooses wrongly and he lets sin enter into the world but jesus right on the other hand is the perfect example of that relationship that's supposed to happen because jesus is the king of the world right he is the one that is perfect um that you know has no sin um and so um all of these things are paralleled and it's all important because this is very like um very poetic language right uh for sure but but i want us to have kind of a good idea of what's uh kind of going on here so let's take a a community break yeah go ahead um m likes noodles wants to know if your sister has an instagram or platform for her i don't know i don't know i will definitely let me ask her i'll text her and see if she gets back to us by the by tonight okay and then hey there fellow snipers what's up uh she i think she's one of our patrons but um anyway um goren sniper uh hello you guys are really good at explaining this uh thank you i appreciate your comments you're always so funny and and yeah like us if you say epic no that's georgie oh georgie goran i don't i don't know if i've seen gordon before but you have an awesome last name yes i think we have seen him okay cool and then connie you've really come to love the snipe channel i appreciate it thanks so much guys appreciate it so much yeah oh and kim she's one of our members of course creepy john still looks like a wookie [Laughter] well i feel like he looks like that kind of in the show too though i think that's what she was getting no it's all good um all right so we got light life darkness death okay so light shines in the darkness so let's flip this around right the life shines in death and the death cannot overcome the life right um so jesus jesus shines in this evil place and the evil cannot overcome jesus right again that's all a parallel all right now we're kind of switching gears a little bit we're coming off of this parallel language right and he's going into some more um kind of normal language here verse six there was a man sent from god whose name was john john the baptist he came as a witness so everybody everybody who's a member just spam the john the baptist emo that'd be great [Laughter] there was a man sent from god whose name was john he came as a witness to bear witness about the light that all might believe through him he was not the light but came to bear witness about the light um so they clearly clarify that john is not jesus or god or who they're describing correct yeah and i'm going to go back to real fast because i want to make this point because i think it's um it's really interesting okay i'm going to say hi to pegar she said when they paralleled this with genesis it became so much deeper i agree 100 yeah and then connie thank you so much for the super sticker go ahead i'm trying to find it right now all right cool um oops i typed in the wrong chapter that's why isn't it eight i think i'm looking for psalms oh wait yeah you're right i was thinking of the wrong um wrong uh thing so uh when we talk about um earlier earlier when we're talking about like jesus being there from the beginning the word being there from the beginning this is also a um a link back to this verse here in proverbs 8. um what oh and um and so let me find this verse real fast so we can kind of go over this as well council sound wisdom in sight did you even write down the verse i think i missed it there i might have yeah so it's like 25 here so i'll just read this part here so this is so this is old school right old testament proverbs we're in proverbs 8 and here it's kind of another parallel um where it's talking about the word was there at the beginning of time jesus was at the beginning of time in proverbs here this is a whole story about wisdom right so there's this lady wisdom that is that is kind of um personified here and so she says before the mountains i um before the mountains had been shaped before the hills i was brought forth before he had made the earth with its fields on the first of the dust of the world when he established the heavens i was there when he drew a circle on the face of the deep when he made firm the skies above when he established the fountains of the deep when he assigned to the seas its limit to that the waters might not transgress his command when he marked out the foundations of the earth then i was beside him like a like a master workman and i was daily his delight rejoicing before him always rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighted in the children of man and so this is this is again it's kind of one of those hyperlinks that we talked about right where it's talking about the word was in the beginning this is also bringing back to this verse and proverbs as well which is super interesting to me um for sure but let's jump into it uh let's go past here so we're talking about john the baptist here in six through eight right i'll kind of highlight this section so we've got six through eight here we've got a man who was sent from god and remember john the baptist um was the first human to receive the holy spirit remember he was born with the holy spirit before acts before the day of pentecost before all that happened right and so him and jesus right of course are the only ones that have access to the holy spirit which is really interesting to me right um and so there was a man who sent from god whose name was john he came as a witness right he is the the herald of christ right to bear witness about the light to bear witness about christ um that all might believe through him he was not the light but came to bear witness about the light and so again john is this herald that has you know come to basically talk about jesus to tell them well this is the lamb of god who takes away the sins of the world you know this whole understanding here um all right now it keeps on going on to talk about the light so we've taken this small break to talk about this man who's talking about the light but now we're gonna go back to talking about the light make sense yeah okay this is pretty heavy stuff um and so we're just gonna talk about it and have have some fun if you guys have any questions let me know for sure so very cool awesome so verse nine the true light which gives light to everyone and again this is this is transmutable right we want to parallels between light and life so i could change that for the uh the true life which gives life to everyone uh was coming into the world he was in the world and the world was made through him yet the world did not know him so jesus came to the world right the son came to the world and he was in the world and the world was made through him right he made the whole the world and yet the world did not know him they didn't accept him they didn't um believe him right um he came to his own and his own people to the jews but they did not receive him uh but to all who did receive him anybody that did receive him right again we see this kind of uh precursor to um to john 3 16 right for all who believed right but to all who did receive him who believed in his name he gave the right to become children of god who were born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man but of god anything cool you want to say that there's a lot of stuff here some of the notes i should have written from what verses they were um but uh every the fact that he keeps calling himself as light um every human is being illuminated by it right like yeah we have the opportunity to just accept it yeah right um and then i like how tim mackey was talking about like it's a code language like because going back to like it's it's it's referring back to the old testament it's it's it's bringing back pieces that we should know right and that's why like it's it's so important to read the word i know i keep hitting on that no it is yeah but it's masterfully crafted i think is the biggest thing that that comes to my mind so beautiful yeah it's just like because we we lack so much understanding we read through this and we're like okay i get it i get it i get it like let's move on you know um but there's so much that is beautifully crafted in this even if you look at like the outline of john as a whole right um we see how everything is ordered properly how how there are things that are planned out over everything um and it becomes this beautiful masterwork that we don't we don't often get a chance to really really appreciate and so that's what these bible studies are really going to be about is is really diving deep into you know why these things are important what's up lisa i think lisa is our um i think she's our longest channel member uh you can see her icon there it's starting to evolve a little bit more the the further she gets along into our our membership and so soon that'll evolve again um lisa we've got some new emotes so make sure you use those tonight if you press the little face button near the uh the chat you can access those so all right so let's dive into this a little bit more so christ came to the world people did not know him they did not accept him uh he came to his own and his own people did not receive him right the jews did not receive him uh but to all who did receive him who believed in his name he gave the right to become children of god how let's just take a second like how amazing is that that god would create this world right and and and he would make a deal with us basically saying that you know we need to be perfect right like that that you know we make this deal with him rather that we need that we'll be perfect that will be good right like the abraham lincoln noah covenant like there's these huge things where like what you say the abrahamic and norway covenants so like there's all these promises right that we make with god and yet we always break them we're always like we're always broken people right like at all times and so we fall so so so short of what we've said that we're going to do right um and and yet he still gives us this opportunity that anybody who believes in his name he gave the right to become children of god like we we don't deserve anything right and yet he's willing to adopt us as his own children yeah and we're heirs right and we become heirs and we have we have ownership in his kingdom when what we really deserve right is death because we're sinful and sin equals death right just like we've learned in the beginning of this right light equals life sin equals darkness which is death right and so jesus came to defeat death which is sin and so all of it is is playing together from the adam and eve narrative all the way to here as well verse 13 who were born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man but of god and so this is interesting because lineages right during the time of jesus are extremely extremely important even if you watch the chosen and you see the episode where they're going into zebedee and salome's house right um the sons of thunder their parents house right um what's what's one of the first things that salome asks jesus she says what lineage are you from you know because this is an extremely important um thing for jewish people to understand who you are and kind of where you fit within the system and so they would ask these questions uh pretty often and um but here it's kind of the reverse of that like this whole section right here let me highlight it for you guys this whole section right here it's going it's the antithesis of of that lineage right the building up of the human being itself it's saying who were born not of the blood so not of humans right nor of the will of the flesh meaning like people didn't have sex to to create children to further their families nor of the will of man it's not it's not the man you know building this empire within his family and wanting to grow that empire and grow that uh you know grow that family so that they're successful but of god and so it's taking all the things that we think of as family we think of as um you know important to grow a family or whatever else and it's it's turning on its head um to make sure that it's focused on god um knowing that it's not us who are creating this family but god who is creating the family and it's it's different than uh you know human lineage right yeah i really like how even that is is like genesis right like i tim mackey was talking about the seed like even the seed like you know like yeah the seed of adam and the seed of the serpent you know i'm talking about that and and again i was talking to um [Music] i think was someone in our comments earlier today i can't remember off the top of my head um but there's this idea that um the scriptures can be as complex and yet as simple as we could ever ask right and so while we're looking into all these things and we're missing pieces of the culture we're missing pieces of the context because we don't understand how the jewish people 100 thought all the time right um yet god still uses the word in every way even for a child right i believe if a five-year-old were able to read through this scripture they would be able to receive something because the word is living and active sharper than any two-edged sword right so it's it's it's not just about how much you know or how much scholarly activity you have going on in your brain it's the understanding that god can work through the scriptures no matter what and that is beautiful to me and and within all of that right the simplified version of all this is good and evil good eventually will come to destroy evil right and so evil was brought into the world by humans and then god has to come and now destroy the evil that has been put into the world and so um there is a an understanding here that is more simplified for sure um like in a in genesis genesis is a book following people right yeah so we follow those that follow the light and those that follow the dark like even the story of cain and abel right yeah he they go on to talk about his lineage and and lamech like one of the first people who's has multiple wives and right he said i'm i'm worse than like he's he's right i am kane plus yes like he's um what's the word i'm looking for like he's uh boasting about being worse than kane and being like you know like this bad person yeah but those are the roads that we we we have to choose between the lights and the dark who what are you gonna do with your life like are you gonna choose the light and choose to glorify god and live for him and live like an a sanctified life where you're you're you're not going to be perfect but god's going to change you right right or are you going to choose to just feed your your sin feed your selfishness feed your pride you know yeah yeah for sure let's move on here then this is probably one of the most recognizable parts of of this scripture for sure and the word became flesh and dwelt among us and we have seen his glory glory as of the son as as of the only son from the father full of grace and truth and so this brings us actually back to um i think it's psalm 33 here um let me bring up this yeah you have any um things you want to pull out there well i'm doing this sorry just trying to find this uh another parallel here so um sherry wilson hey you all you wonderful people from the great state of texas sorry it's no problem no worries for sure i'm glad you're here we love texans we have a couple of really good friends in texas right now they're actually house parents and they take care of um you know kids that have been either in the foster system or um some other bad situations and so it's been uh it's been really cool for them to do that for sure i can't find it off the top of my head i should have written down the actual verse uh this command stood in hell it's a world uh scroll up i don't think it's i know the word of the lord the heavens were made and the breath of his mouth all their hosts yes yes yes yes yes okay i think this is an allusion to something else that i was going to talk about earlier we might have to skip it but yeah yeah again this is talking about the rock it's it's the the breath of god the spirit of god um kind of coming back to here i'm thinking of a different one but i don't know if i wrote down the um the parallel to it unfortunately but um yeah the breath of god which is which the kind of hebrew word for it is ruach is it's a very um common kind of thing for people to talk about when they talk about the spirit because it's the same word breath and spirit ruach it's all the same there um and um and so this understanding that the breath of his mouth um it's that ruach it's that same understanding but the word of the lord kind of brings forth the breath and so it's all connected there right and um kind of an interesting interesting metaphor that i was thinking about earlier today is like you know if god the father is the mouth right the mouthpiece that kind of controls um then jesus would be the words right that comes out of his mouth the word the logos and then the spirit would be the breath that that allows the words to come out right that allows that gives power to the words almost um so it's kind of an interesting way to think about the trinity as well um i don't know if you find that interesting let me know give me a thumbs up um all right and the word became flesh and dwelt among us and we have seen his glory glory as of the son from the father full of grace and truth again this is an allusion to another verse that i can't remember off the top of my head john the baptist bore witness about him and cried out this was he of who i said he who comes after me ranks before me because he was before me again this is something that john said during his ministry um and i think we're going to talk about this in a little bit as the pharisees kind of like question him as well where as of the only son yeah it's the unique one in some other translations it's it's glory as to the unique one um which is interesting as well esv i normally use because it's a word for word translation and and i just i that's what i normally use so i'm glorious of the only son from the father full of grace and truth all right moving on john bore witness about him and he cried out this uh was he of who i set who whom i said he who comes after me ranks before me again he's talking about christ john the baptist is the herald of jesus right because he was before me as in he is you know above me he is greater than i verse 16 for whom from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace for the law was given through moses grace and truth came through jesus christ now this is something that we definitely preach a lot about as christians right this idea that jesus is grace and truth and so i think the best way that i've kind of heard talking about this is the law comes to kind of show what you're doing wrong the law comes to show you how sinful that you are right and it's not to condemn you although the pharisees and a lot of people used it to do that right the law is not to condemn you but it's to bring you to a point of coming to god to say i can't do this without god i need god right and so jesus comes with grace and truth and he says you you are sinful you are you're broken you know um so let me take all that for you you know my my yoke is is easy like my my burden is light like this is this is the jesus who we serve it's someone who wants to take all of that that law guilt right and take that away from you and and say that you are mine and you are not clean because you forced yourself to be clean because you're so good it's that i came and i saved you you know it says understanding there um and so so this for for jewish people to hear this i think would be massive i mean having this understanding that that like maybe there's not a full understanding here but it's the beginning of the understanding of kind of keying up that that thing there so anyway let's move on verse 18. so no one has ever seen god the only god who is at the father's side he has made him known so let me kind of read this through because i was confused a little bit uh a couple of times when i when i read through this no one has ever seen god right no one has ever seen god because if we see him face to face we literally die right the only person who has kind of sort of seen god was moses right but even he only saw the back of god right he had to cover the cave as he walked by and then as god walked by the physical form of god right which a lot of people think is a christophany or christ coming in the flesh back then right um but it could have been a different physical form of god as well right he covers the cave as as moses is sitting in the cave so he can walk by and then moses peeks out and sees the back of god and literally because he see because he saw the back of god not even god's face because he would have died if he saw god's face he was glowing for like weeks after hand after afterwards right like this this priestly visage was like all over him as he's carrying down the ten commandments and all of that and so um no one has ever seen god the only god right so he's being very clear here there's only one god who is at the father's side and so this is this is an understanding it's putting jesus in this category of of god right so no one has ever seen god the only god but in this point it's talking about jesus who is at the father's side right so jesus is at the father's side who is also god they are both god again it's this massive mind-blowing understanding beginning to understand a little bit more of the trinity he has made him known and so he here is talking about jesus jesus has made god known um that's the understanding here so again let me kind of reread that in a way that you can kind of understand a little better no one has ever seen god okay we get that part the only god jesus right the the son you could even say there the son who is at the father's side jesus has made him known so jesus has made god known here um his understanding so again this is putting jesus in a very high place in a place that jews would not have had him right they don't think the messiah has come even if you go to israel today then the jews who live there don't believe that jesus is the messiah they don't believe that the messiah has come right there's many people that even claim to be a messiah even today and we see that jewish people will get riled up and some of them will try to follow these other false messiahs but we know that the messiah has already come and we see this evidence all around which is insane to me that people wouldn't believe but again we move forward now we get we got through 18 there's a lot more in there that you can study so so uh don't think that we're experts or that you're an expert just because we talked through 18 there's a lot a lot of stuff in uh in one through 18 that you guys can dig through um immensely so you want to grab some stuff and give me some water real fast grab some stuff yeah what are people saying thank you jesus wait why can't i oh um amen we're getting some amens amen he's not waiting for us to be holy rather he came to us because he knew that we could not be holy without him yeah exactly mary magdalene says that season two episode uh episode three um and she's absolutely right yeah so brad he he has to wear a veil yeah georgie says most of israel doesn't believe in jesus not so epic i would agree but god still has a plan for them very epic yes absolutely yeah yeah they're coming around to believing amen i know that there are definitely ministries in israel that that are striving to encourage uh jewish people to look into jesus as being the messiah and see you know just seek truth and because you know we believe in the truth right like the truth not like this um relativistic truth right and so if we really believe the truth then why wouldn't we we want people to pursue that truth right and so that's my hope is that they would keep on pursuing that truth for sure all right very cool let's continue on now we're going to get into the testimony of john the baptist and we're going to continue on from there verse 19 and this is the testimony of john when the jews sent uh priests and levites from jerusalem to ask him who are you he confessed and did not deny but confessed i am not the christ and they asked him what then uh what then are you elijah he said i am not are you the prophet and he answered no okay can you explain this part to me do you do you understand this part elijah and the prophet sarah was reading i was reading comments so elijah and the prophet why would they ask if if he's elijah or or the prophet who is that um because in i don't remember where it says that elijah will come back to well did elijah die oh no he didn't right yeah yeah he went up he got called up and elisha was there to witness it right so elijah right this this massive important prophet from the old testament has not died right even today even today he has not died right he is supposedly supposed to be coming back right and then the second one being the prophet wait what are you saying enoch right yeah that's what i said yeah so they're asking if like basically there's this idea that that these prophets would come back during a certain time right and so elijah um who has not died and has was taken up into heaven right um you know he's supposed to be coming back so they're asking are you elijah or are you enoch the other prophet right and he answered no um and so they said to him uh who are you we need to give an answer to those who sent us what do you say about yourself and he said i am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness make straight the way of the lord as the prophet isaiah said right and so again this is a parallel uh to isaiah here um yeah um let's see if i can find that exact reference [Music] yeah so isaiah 43 um and then again in matthew 3 3 we see that as well this tool is amazing if you guys want to check out logos super super cool for sure verse 24. now they had been sent from the pharisees which we know all about right the pharisees are this group of people who are kind of like the religious leaders they asked him then why are you baptizing if you are neither the christ nor elijah nor the prophet john answered them i baptize with water but among you stands one you do not know uh denise asked so i don't get that why did he why didn't he die why would he come back god's plan [Laughter] i don't know 100 prophesied i don't know where in the prophets but in in revelation for sure it says that there's going to be two um is it prophets that come back and to proclaim yeah so they will basically spread the word of christ trying to get people to understand and come back to him and people believe that's them right yeah so generally that's what they believe yep uh yeah yeah so georgie kind of explains it this way this is a different uh thing but john was the elijah prophesied to come before jesus came that's why jesus uh says to john about this in the show we both know uh the elijahness of your role yeah and so again this is kind of like the the precursor right the elijahnus meaning the precursor but it doesn't actually mean that he is physically elijah um if that makes sense so all right um continue to go here uh i baptized with water but among you stands one that you do not know even he who comes after me the straps of whose sandals i am not worthy to untie again talking about jesus here right um john again is the first person to be filled with the holy spirit and he um and he is you know speaking truths that he that he has been given through the spirit here right and we don't know again the show kind of portrays it in a little bit different way but we don't know if john the baptist had any um time with jesus when they were kids you know we don't know if they grew up together if they had if they spent time together in the show obviously they certainly have they know each other they have a very you know family kind of bond um but within um within the the scriptures itself we don't really know what their relationship was like um and the chosens kind of said that as well but they had to make a decision there so obviously what they did is perfectly fine but um yeah straps of who sandals i am not worthy to entice these things took place in bethany across the jordan uh where john was baptizing so this is a kind of interesting point that tim mackey was talking about when i was listening to him earlier today um bethany is a it is a proper city but here um kind of getting in the weeds a little bit um this this bethany is kind of like a an illusion it's an illusion right he's using it as a narrative device in order to kind of um organize his book and so he's he's using the word bethany here um which doesn't actually mean bethany it's almost like a misspelling which we're not going to get into that but um he's using the word bethany here to link to the bethany that he's going to mention at the raising of lazarus and the death of lazarus and the resurrection of him later on because the death of lazarus is when the pharisees decided okay well this jesus guy is way way too out of control we're actually gonna kill him now um instead of just kind of like talking about it or kind of like um uh you know being salty about jesus being who he is um they really wanted to kill him after the resurrection of lazarus so uh that's why this is important it's kind of like a weird tie-in here that like he's like oh by the way these things took place in bethany but it has a purpose in all of it which all of this stuff does and so uh here we'll read on 29 the next day he saw jesus coming towards him and he said behold the lamb of god who takes away the sin of the world this is he of whom i said after me comes a man who ranks before me because he was before me i myself did not know him but for this purpose i came baptizing with water that he might be revealed to israel and john bore witness i saw the spirit descend from heaven like a dove and it remained on him i myself did not know him but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me he on whom you see the spirit descend and remain this is he who baptizes with the holy spirit and i have seen and i have borne witness that this is the son of god pretty intense yeah yep so jesus baptism there again the chosen is kind of using this as a blueprint uh for their show and so we see a lot of this kind of happening um generally we see like in episode three of season one this is really where uh the chosen starts uh kind of on its journey but uh it's generally believed that after the baptism of jesus jesus went into the wilderness and then you know he was fasting for 40 days and 40 nights and you know encountered satan and all that stuff as well which we see in in another gospel um yeah anything else you want to share there before we move on no all righty and again um if if you look through this uh chapter as well one thing that i find super interesting is um jesus actually receives seven names uh throughout this chapter as well which is uh incredibly cool to kind of see that um and so that that theme of seven is going to keep on repeating throughout john as well because it's a very um important number to scriptures in general um but let's continue reading jesus calls the first disciples and so we see this season one episode four we see uh kind of this uh a little bit play out but a little bit differently they kind of use more of the uh the luke version of this uh the next day again john was standing uh with two of his disciples and he looked at jesus as he walked by and said behold the lamb of god the two disciples heard him say this and they followed jesus jesus turned and saw them following and said to them what are you seeking they said to him rabbi which means teacher where are you staying he said to them come and you will see so they came so they came and saw where he was staying and they stayed with him that day for it was about the tenth hour one of the two who heard john speak and followed jesus was andrew simon peter's brother he first found his own brother simon and said to him we have found the messiah which means christ he brought him to jesus jesus looked at him and said you are simon the son of john you shall be called cephas which means peter immediately changes his name so i love that meme if you ever if you've ever seen that recently i know i've seen it kind of wandering about m probably knows what i mean um she's a meme master but um yeah there's just meme that's like um jesus is like hey what's your name and peter's like oh hi i'm i'm you know simon and then jesus goes okay hi peter [Laughter] but yeah uh very interesting so jesus jesus calls um andrew and peter here again in luke it happens you know there's a little bit more information as jesus kind of gets on the boat he does the miracle of the fish and then um he calls them then right after um simon peter kind of has this moment of um why would you choose me i'm a sinner you know this moment of grief there but jesus chooses them so he picks up his first disciples here simon and andrew and then also in the book of luke we see him pick up [Music] john and james at the same time um if that makes sense so awesome [Laughter] simon hi my name is simon jesus nah you're peter yeah pretty much yeah and i talked to the children of the chosen about this actually i commented on one of their things and we were talking about it um they were basically saying how they wanted to use the longer version because because in some of the other gospels it takes jesus a little bit longer for for jesus to change simon's name to peter and so maybe we'll see that um i think we might see that in season three actually as his name gets changed from simon to peter and then a really uh popular scene from the chosen uh season two um episode two we see philip and nathaniel so phil gets introduced in the chosen pretty early on there in episode two and then nathaniel comes in um you know as he's kind of going through all this stuff all right cool and there's definitely some interesting things that we'll talk about here and this is the last section that we're going to talk about i have a lot of notes on okay cool um the next day jesus decided to go to galilee he found philip and said to him follow me now philip was from bethsaida the city of andrew and peter philip found nathanael and said to him we have found him who moses and the law and also the prophets wrote jesus of nazareth the son of joseph so again philip some people believe to be a student of john the baptist though we don't know that for sure the chosen has made that kind of conclusion that that he was a student of john the baptist and andrew as well obviously we see that earlier on up here um but here philip uh you know it's just um a random guy basically um jesus said to follow him and he does right um yeah uh that's not just him so let's go to uh verse 46. um now philip is bringing nathanael to jesus um and then nathanael said to him can anything good come out of nazareth again this was kind of like a common um saying back then where it's kind of like you know uh for us it's like um you know can anything good come out of detroit or can anything good come out of polk county right it's kind of the area where we're from but um it's so funny i had a i have a cousin who's um who's a police officer right and he so he always watches like cops and stuff and um we live in a county called polk county and um like 50 plus percent of the the stuff on cops is like from our county so um it's always pretty ratchet out here for sure but um anyway 46 can anything good come out of nazareth philip said to him come and see right we see that um in the episode as well and this is exactly how it happened right he just says come and see and then jesus that was like to that's also like uh i i keep using callback but like when phil uh jesus spoke he said come and see basically yeah [Music] um yeah jesus saw nathanael coming toward him right there walking towards each other and said of him behold an israelite indeed in whom there is no deceit and so can you kind of explain why he's talking about deceit here like what is that what does that mean what is that context there uh israelites what person was named israel jacob yep the deceiver jacob jacob um so it's it's kind of like this is the the true israel like this is now the true israel that doesn't have the seat within you know um and it's pulling from micah 4 4 zechariah 3 8-10 first kings 4 um 21-25 yeah there's a lot of references all throughout scripture right because like it goes back all the way to the beginning of time right the deceiver right satan himself again it goes back to the seed of satan so we're talking about creation we're talking about good and evil and so we think about the simplified version right we have god good and the seed of god and then we have satan bad evil the seed of satan right is all the bad and evil things and so basically what he's saying here is an israelite indeed like you're one of the good ones right like you're a real israelite who is who is you know a seed of god like you're you're good like it's so good to see you like amazing that you would you know be here and i could talk to you basically you know um then nathaniel says yeah nathanael said to him how do you know me right and jesus answered him before philip called you when you were under the fig tree i saw you yeah that's what's calling back to micah 3 and all that yeah you want to read what what verse is that four four michael four four yeah so this is again another callback to old testament scripture which they would have known right and we're going to see more of this in just a second here but micah 4 4 says but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree and no one shall make them afraid for the mouth of the lord of hosts has spoken and again this is this is talking about the nation of israel right and so it's talking about like who they will be how they will how they will be portrayed right they will be comfortable they'll have their own fig tree um but also i believe that nathaniel is probably actually sitting under fig tree um i think it's not just an illusion but it's actually something that was done you know um then nathaniel answered him rabbi you are the son of god you are the king of israel and because of this um you know this thing that jesus did right well he's saying uh he's quoting prophecies right and no they are yeah nathaniel would know them right right right right um and and he's realizing oh like the messiah is speaking to me right right and it is possible that he could have been under a fig tree as well but it also could be possible that he's just talking about like because of what jesus is saying here the metaphor that he's proclaiming through the scriptures that he could be understanding that he's the messiah as well so um yeah rabbi you're the son of god you are the king of israel this is the the first like disciple the first um you know follower of jesus that like really proclaims this right like even later on we see that everybody is having these struggles even philip later on is having struggles of who exactly jesus is right that he is god right that he is the son of god that he is the messiah that he is the person that we've been waiting for right they have some sort of idea but i think a lot of times they get confused or they start to doubt right but nathaniel from the very beginning you are the son of god you are the king of israel this is a major major um you know mind-blowing thing for him jesus answered him uh because i said to you i saw you under the fig tree do you believe like this is such a small thing like that's all it takes you know um you will see greater things than these and he said to him truly truly which is you know amin amen amen amen which is like that's one of these things that sets up a very important thing that's about to come right um i say to you you will see heaven opened and the angels of god ascending and descending on the son of man okay and this is a uh uh sorry i'm gonna you're good um like a call back to jacob's dream um yeah where he was it when he was fighting with with the christophany i don't know no no i don't believe so he was in the wilderness but he's running away from esau so jacob again let's kind of recap for those of you that aren't super familiar with jacob and esau so um so jacob and esau are brothers right esau being the older brother stronger brother hairier brother and and they both go to their father right and they say to him um or basically esau is supposed to get this blessing right but jacob pretends to be esau and steals the blessing from the father right essentially becoming the deceiver esau then hates his brother right and he's extremely angry at him and wants to kill him and so jacob is advised to run away and so he does he runs away into the wilderness and um he's on his own but while he's in the wilderness he has this vision right this dream of um of this the staircase right you want to kind of explain that yeah it's it's what he's basically saying so he he saw uh them on the ground and then like a a ladder of it was it was a staircase yeah of the of the sons of god or angels of god descending and ascending which is also like a depiction of the temple yeah um so yeah just want to shout out yeah the chosen real fast thank you so much guys i appreciate it yeah for sure thank you so much thanks for the instagram shout out earlier today that was awesome so um really really appreciate it for sure um but yeah as as vanessa's kind of talking about here you know like i said a lot of a lot of what we're talking about today i kind of was learning from tim mackey and really diving into some of the deep deep stuff that he was talking about but um how he kind of explained it which i found super interesting was you know this staircase led from the earth into the holy place right into heaven and so if we put that in earthly terms right what are we talking about we're talking about the temple and so this staircase this ladder right represents the temple and so what does jesus do here he says truly truly i say to you you will see heaven opened up and the angels of god ascending and descending that's automatically a callback to this jacob's ladder idea right um but what are they descending and uh sitting on they're not ascending and descending on a staircase anymore they're ascending and descending on the son of man right and so and so jesus has now implanted himself he's taken out the staircase who needs a staircase right he's he's taking out the staircase which which in turn equals the temple right so so he's taking out that staircase which equals the temple and then the temple now equals jesus right so jesus becomes the temple in which the presence of god right like stays right in which we now have access to right which is like this huge mind-blowing thing so jesus is really allowing a lot of understanding to kind of go here um but but yeah it's it's it's so mindful like i can't i can't even imagine being nathaniel in this situation right like how crazy um how crazy would it be to have waited your entire life for the messiah right and you're praying every single day you're a devout jew you've been praying every single day for the messiah he literally walks up to you from nazareth right from the bad part of town and and then he just like invites you first of all to come follow him but secondly he he brings all of this like mind-blowing information to you that that this idea of the angels ascending and descending is going to be the son of man i don't know if nathaniel understood any of that right i don't know if i would have understood any of that if christ was talking to me right um but christ did this a lot where he would say things and people just wouldn't understand so i totally get that too but yeah it's it's insane this chapter is so good and i know that there's are so many things that we missed um in this as well so make sure you do your own research make sure you're spending your own time um in your quiet time and and don't um i want to emphasize this too don't feel bad if you don't understand something or if you're not quite like clicking on something the word is living and active it truly truly is and so if you're not understanding something god has something else for you okay and so you know if if if something um if you've read through john chapter one a million times and you didn't get some of the stuff that we're talking about today there's been a million times when i haven't gotten that stuff either right and i have to seek out other information and all of that and is this stuff necessary for your salvation do you need to understand all of these references in order to be saved by jesus absolutely not right that's not how it works the more knowledge you have doesn't mean the holy you are so um yeah for sure you want to put up that comment what's up dallas welcome uh dallas says thanks for doing this yeah welcome to uh the rabbit hole of the fig tree meaning [Laughter] one passage a dozen different interpretations i just went straight forward yeah i think that's uh that's probably a great way to interpret it and especially for a show i don't know what i would have done so definitely super super cool and it was so wonderfully made that that episode yeah that was one of my absolute favorites for sure we're diving back through um season one right now and so we just got finished with episode four well we're in the middle of episode four there's a couple more episodes that i want to do which by the way um if you're not subscribed definitely get subscribed um but we've got brandon robbins coming on soon as well um and with him we're gonna talk about why would these random fishermen and random people just leave everything that they have and go with jesus and so brandon robbins is gonna kind of help me explain all of that um with you guys as well and that's gonna be a super super cool video that's going to be coming out in the next couple of weeks so make sure you stay tuned for that one it's going to be amazing oh and we have some special stuff coming up in the next few weeks that you are not going to want to miss some very very big announcements um and so stay tuned to our channel because you are you're not going to want to miss it it's going to be amazing it's going to be insane you're going to be like wow they're really doing that and then we'll be like yeah we're really doing that and then you'll be like dang can i do that and then we'll be like yeah you can do that and then we'll talk about it some more later on so it's going to be amazing i can't wait to talk to you guys about it um but did you enjoy chapter one of drawn yeah i i really liked tim mackey's yeah um yep yeah just seeing how uh i love uh i think stuyve says it um one of our pastors brian's diversity anyway um he always says that the the bible is its own um commentary like the bible deciphers the bible you know like uh and i love that like this was a clear example of that how it goes back to it's it's jumping from scripture to scripture and yeah it's like it's making me want to read more like you know like it's making me not because that's going to get me salvation right it's right it's because i want i like i love god i love jesus and i want to learn more about him and yeah yeah and i hope that inspires you guys as well yeah absolutely i think that i mean this is one of the reasons why we love the chosen in the first place right like would i be sitting here and going through john with you guys if it weren't for the chosen no you know like this has been an amazing experience for our lives too and the fact that we get to do this is is amazing and i don't know how well this video is going to do it's not about the chosen directly but it's about scripture and i love talking about scripture so thank you guys for being here and being a part of it because it really means a lot to me that you guys are willing to you know ask questions and talk through things and we're going to be calling this series the blueprint and basically what what that means for us is you know this is kind of the blueprint that the chosen is kind of using in john but it's also the blueprint that we need to use in order to understand jesus right in order to walk with him and see exactly what he's doing this is the blueprint right the the part where he goes into ministry and he does all these amazing amazing things and then he dies on a cross for our sin again the light destroying the darkness the life killing out the death right um and jesus overcoming sin right it's it's all of those parallels coming back in and and talking about the trinity the word who or the the the mouth who who creates the words through the voice of the through the breath of the spirit right and the understanding of that too and um amazing amazing amazing stuff um for sure so i'm really excited to dive into the wedding at cana you can see right there um chapter two and all of that and uh we'll dive into that which is a very significant place as well for this kind of the second part of of john um but when we get into the next episode we'll definitely let you guys know ahead of time and you guys can jump in and talk with us about that so yeah anything else you got to say read your bible read your bible fall in love with it it's so deep and absolutely it's yeah yeah uh em likes noodles i don't know if she's still here but she she did say she has some uh art
