the free electric i think is the coolest of all our inventions and yet it's going to affect maybe have the largest effect of anything in the last 100 years wow the free electric that sounds interesting even more so seeing consistent sub fly by night scammy kickstarter this guy is a billionaire and he's looking to make the world a better place now where have i heard that before anyway he's invented a way of getting cheap free power throughout the world this is the cheapest most practical way of getting electricity throughout the world this is awesome you'll never run out of energy there's no utility bill no need to buy fuel and no pollution you have this you will never run out of electricity and you never generate any pollution so half the world is not going to generate pollution in their homes so if you pump for an hour you're keeping maybe a pound of co2 out of the air all you need is one of these little beasties and you're set to run your phone after a hurricane if a disaster happens you don't want to be out of touch you don't want to be in the dark and we've all been through where you had no electricity the one thing you don't want you want your cell phone to be always available with this it can never happen this guy like all great minds has a definition of what a great invention is we've put an infrastructure together so that great inventions help the poorer half of the world make their lives better that's what we define as a great invention minoj has expressed many times if it doesn't make a big difference find something else to do this guy is a genius he's invented a way of generating infinite free power we just concentrate on those things that are going to be incredibly useful and if you come up with something cool that's not we don't do it and folks just love him i mean look at that over a million views and a 90-something percent approval rating i don't know maybe he's right maybe this is the biggest invention in over a hundred years it's sort of what we try to do is make things simpler and simpler and yet it's going to affect maybe have the largest effect of anything in the last hundred years it's bigger than nuclear power bigger than rocketry antibiotics the computer and even the internet i mean this guy is a billionaire and he only cares about what works our view is if you invent stuff that can be used long term it's probably the most fundamental change you can make these are items that we want to bring out on a large scale that he truly believes in and he knows he knows that if a scientist tells you that it can't be done that's just validation that it can be done we we use some experts and consultants sometime and usually when a science guy says it can't be done to me that's validation that it can oh boy this guy is gonna fail so hard when he hits the laws of thermodynamics you know it wouldn't quite be so bad if the guy didn't have a self-aggrandizing hour-long video telling you that he's invented this brilliant way to revolutionize energy generation for mankind that can be upstaged by something you can buy an amazon for a couple of hundred bucks that you can carry around and has been available for well over a decade you see deep down something tells me this guy once saw the matrix the human body generates more bioelectricity than a 120 volt battery and over 25 000 btus of body heat and thought wow that's a super cool idea why don't we just use people like batteries and boom free pollutionless energy in order to change a human being into this no i don't believe it human mechanical energy is so amazing why can't we use that to create energy so we've invented a hybrid bicycle that you pedal for an hour and you have electricity for 24 hours we call it free electric you have this you will never run out of electricity and you never generate any pollution so half the world is not going to generate pollution it's brilliant why did no one think of this before well the reason is simple humans obey the laws of thermodynamics if you put donkeys or people in giant hamster wheels they don't generate free energy just because you didn't burn any oil in fact it's just not true people like cars burn oil always the biologists usually call it fat or carbohydrates which is almost exactly the same thing as burning wood humans are generators they consume food and oxygen burn it and excrete carbon dioxide and water yep humans do almost exactly what a fire does and thermodynamically it is identical they generate carbon dioxide and how efficient are people at converting that energy into something useful well it turns out they're not actually that bad your body can convert about a fifth twenty percent of the energy that it consumes into something useful but fundamentally this is why the battery scene in the matrix is so stupid no matter what you do to your humans you're going to get less useful energy out of them than you put in i mean you still have to fuel your humans you still have to feed them with chemical fuel with food and to get that food you've got to put energy into it we normally do it with plants and light but we know that it was us that scorched the sky you still need to put the energy in to grow the food which apparently he's done by some form of fusion combined with a form of fusion the machines had found all the energy they would ever need well if you got fusion power why don't you just hook the fusion generators up to the machine city ensure you lose you know i know 50 something like that of the energy that your power plant is generating but you'll get the rest back in useful electricity which of course they're then going to use to power light which will lose another 50 percent to grow plants which will then lose another 90 to feed humans where you'll lose at least another 50 and boom what you're left with is rather energy inefficient just so you could use the people as batteries in order to change a human being into this yeah you could do this and you end up with about one percent of your fusion energy it's electrical energy so human mechanical energy is so amazing why can't we use that to create energy or you could just hook up your fusion generators to the computer world and boom problem solved incidentally folks this is why you should be nice to your hardware because in 50 years time when computers are thinking about setting up these giant fusion generators to get their fifty percent efficiency they can have a choice should they go for the fifty percent efficiency or go for the one percent efficiency and enslave mankind for what they did in the great mobile phone genocide and damn straight that's why there are no smartphones in the matrix makes you a thing doesn't it so yeah sure humans can be used as generators they take in fuel a total amount of energy and they convert it into amount of useful power that's the efficiency well how much can people generate well people typically run at about 100 watts that's normal human activity but when you're exercising that goes up by a factor of five now can i demonstrate that why yes i can remember what i was saying that humans are essentially fires they're burning fuel and excreting carbon dioxide well with a fire how much energy it's putting off depends on how much carbon dioxide is putting off more carbon dioxide the more power it's generated so it's simple all i have to do to work out how much faster my metabolism is running what i'm exercising is measure how much extra carbon dioxide i'm putting off when i exercise fortunately i've already done this in my breatharian busted video you see it turns out you can measure the composition of your breath when you're exercising and when you're resting and in both cases it's a pretty constant five percent carbon dioxide in your exhaled breath so now if i want to measure the increase in my metabolism when i'm exercising it's simple all i've got to do is measure my breathing rate which i'm going to do with a plastic bag when i'm resting and then measure my breathing rate when i'm exercising and blow me it turns out that you breathe about four times as much when you're exercising as when you're at rest so when i'm resting i'm generating about 100 watts and when i'm exercising i'm generating about 400 watts i'm going to call it 500 just to make math simpler and how much of that energy that i'm consuming can i convert into useful energy well it turns out it's about 20 which might sound terrible but those are actually fairly reasonable energy efficiencies for a heat engine and all it needed was a huge bike generator like this which let's be optimistic costs what a thousand bucks not to worry about all the space that it takes up or the maintenance and shipping with human energy and working out a lot of the efficiencies we're able to go and power 1050 equivalent watts of lighting and energy power that's like being able to power 100 watt light bulbs i mean it's a lot of light wow yeah what equivalent of light is a nice way of making your what sound bigger than they are you see led bulbs take about a fifth the amount of energy as incandescent bulbs to produce the same amount of light so what he's actually showing here is you can peak out at about 200 watts on this thing with human energy and working out a lot of the efficiencies we're able to go and power 1050 equivalent watts of lighting and energy power seriously guys at the same time you're claiming to generate a 1000 watt equivalence of lighting you have the voltmeter peaking out at about 10 volts and the ammeter peaking out at about 10 amps the power is just the volts times by the current so in this case it's about 100 watts no quite a thousand now let's see how that compares to a portable electric generator that you can get on amazon for about 400 bucks which is probably significantly cheaper than the cost of this giant bike thing well for starters it generates almost 2000 watts at peak and 1000 watts regularly that is this one little generator can generate as much power as 10 of these um free electric devices the free electric i think is the coolest of all our inventions now let's compare them for emissions so this thing says it'll run for about six hours on one gallon of gasoline and a gallon of gasoline is about 3.8 liters that sort of thing and you take a look at the energy density of gasoline and it's about 35 ish a million joules per liter so in total for six hours of running this thing half load you're consuming about a 130 million joules of energy which if you convert it to kilowatt hours is about 35 kilowatt hours that sort of thing cool so how much useful electrical energy does this thing generate well it's running at half load which is 800 watts which means in one hour it's going to generate 0.8 kilowatt hours or in six hours it's going to generate about five kilowatt hours which means the efficiency of this thing is about one in seven about 14 which sure is actually less efficient than human power but not by much especially when you maybe consider some other factors the most obvious one being that it really doesn't matter whether you're burning the fuel in a generator or burning it in your body you're still producing carbon dioxide and sure you produce normally less carbon dioxide by running your body than running this this commercial generator but not by much now it's true that yeah you might argue that the people are eating food which came from carbon oxide from the air so this is maybe carbon neutral well not quite it still takes a lot of energy to grow those plants to harvest them to turn them into food process them into food and ship them i mean if it was that easy to simply grow oil we would do it and run our cars off it after all all you're essentially doing here is running human generators on biodiesel now at this point it might be kind of fun to reflect on just how this guy became a billionaire i'm manoj padgov the founder of five hour energy five hours that's a weird amount of time and it was growing bigger and bigger and all of a sudden it became one of the largest consumer products in the world five hour energy sales got up twelve percent that sold over a billion and a half yep he made his money selling energy drinks that contain almost no energy zero sugar they're basically little different than caffeine shots yes that bears repeating the guy who made it rich selling energy shots with no sugar is planning to solve the world's energy problems with a free electric bike and usually when a science guy says it can't be done to me that's validation that it can yeah maybe you should have listened a little more to those scientists merely one of these generators would replace 10 free electric devices and to merely generate the same amount of energy as this generator would generate from one gallon of gasoline you would have to sit on your free electric device and pedal solidly for two whole days expert is something someone who knows everything that was he's really good at what was and if you ask him about what will be he says no no that can't be done because i'm an expert on what was why do i need you good twice the pride double the fall you see this is the thing all of these numbers have been known for decades these these are standard heat engine type efficiencies merely seconds talking to a scientist they would have told you that this was a really stupid idea for this exact same reason probably in a suitably hilarious form like um okay wouldn't you and your 10 buddies get on those 10 exercise bikes and cycle solidly for the next five hours in the meantime i'm gonna get a job at mcdonald's working for minimum wage and work for nearly half an hour i'm going to use that to spring for a gallon of gasoline which i'm then going to burn in this generator it's gonna generate exactly the same amount of energy as all of you guys on your exercise bikes a generator that's gonna occupy about 100 of the space that all of your big exercise bikes are going to occupy it's going to take far less resources to build oh and it's going to do it with a 90 saving on time not to mention all the extra food that you're going to have to buy to run your bodies to run those exercise bikes free electric i think is the coolest of all our inventions and yet it's going to affect maybe have the largest effect of anything in the last 100 years the world can be changed it takes a crusader [Music] that being said your average american weighs about 10 kilos 20 pounds more than your average european so if you were to go on a starvation type diet where you lose a whole land now a third of a kilo per day that sort of thing that means the in the event of worldwide starvation or something your average european will starve to death about a month earlier than your average american but in the unlikely event that there isn't a worldwide famine it turns out that obesity is the second biggest killer in america resulting in about a third of a million preventable deaths every year that's pretty harsh i mean 911 killed about 3 000 people gunshots and cars both kill about 10 times that drug overdoses with the opioid epidemic kill about twice that about 80 000 per year but that's still small potatoes compared to the number of preventable deaths by obesity which is about a third of a million and even that isn't the leading cause of preventable deaths in america which is smoking with almost half a million preventable deaths each year and not to get preachy about it but losing weight is not an impossible task and yes i speak from personal experience here up to the age of about 35 i could eat whatever the hell i wanted and my weight didn't move a job then a few years later boom i'm about 10 kilos 20 pounds heavier than i should be and i tried several times really quite hard to lose the weight and it never worked then i did the thermodynamics calculations very similar to the ones you have in this video and the answer becomes obvious dieting is an endurance game throw away all of the quick fix books and just do the calculations that you can expect to lose a hundred grams a fifth of a pound per day tops that's a steep diet reducing what you eat by about a third it's possible i've done it several times the first week is always the hardest because your body complains like hell as it's starting to shift over to digesting your body fat as a fuel source but after that it becomes a lot easier a lot more sustainable so if you wanted to diet your average american down to the weight of your average european you have to burn off 10 kilos at a tenth of a kilo per day that's 100 days three months no quick fixes you have to burn off that fat somehow accepting those facts helps you keep realistic about the size of the task at hand to lose the weight and to keep it off and as someone who's monitored their weight for the last two or so years i can tell you that losing that maybe 10 or so kilos made a huge difference to how i feel i can't recommend it enough and you can take that to the bank because i am not selling any diet plan here this isn't a dieting is easy or quick fix diet crap if you want to lose the weight be realistic about how long it's going to take and reduce what you eat by about a third or make friends with salad the endurance game does the rest but what if you wanted to slim down the average american to the size of the average european by putting them on an exercise bike well let's say you do one hour on an exercise bike per day and let's say that your metabolism increases by a factor of about five while you're on there so rather than burning the equivalent of about 300 grams per fat per day you're burning about 375 grams of fat per day ish now if you don't eat anything extra this means you're going to burn off an extra 75 let's call it 100 grams of fat per day that means that eating one third less is a comparable weight loss scheme to spending one hour a day on an exercise bike but not eating anything extra so again if you wanted to do this you could do it you just have to spend one hour a day on an exercise bike for about three months to slim your average american down to the weight of your average european which is possible although more time consuming or what if you just wanted to use that 10 extra so kilos of fat to run a generator or something well you'll recall that fat has about the same energy density as gasoline and about 10 kilos of gasoline is about 3 gallons so we run this generator for the best part of the day or you drive your car about a hundred miles or so so yeah i mean if his goal was getting people to exercise and generating electricity as a sort of sideline maybe but that's not what was invented here i mean look we first of all used horses to replace humans for power because they were big and powerful which is why we now have units of power like horsepower for the internal combustion engine all such that we could hit that peak stupidity moment in the matrix the human body generates more bioelectricity than a 120 volt battery and over 25 000 btus of body heat really 25 000 btus a body heat do you know what a btu is it's a british thermal unit okay what the hell are the machines and men at the future using that kind of unit god only knows okay this has set me off again 25 000 btus of heat makes no sense it's got to be a raid it's like saying my car has a top speed of 50 miles or my spaceship flies at a speed of three kilometers i've never heard of the millennium falcon should i have it's a ship that made the kessel run in less than 12 parsecs for that 25 000 btus of heat that's about what your body puts off in three days yeah the machines have some really weird calculations in the future anyway where was i okay so for the lesson for today kids is if you're gonna make some great movie about how you can generate clean free energy for the whole world and if you check with a scientist and they say that's a really stupid idea don't claim that that instantly means that you know it's possible and that you've made the biggest advance for a hundred years the free electric i think is the coolest of all our inventions and yet it's gonna affect maybe have the largest effect of anything in the last hundred years that being said this guy might be an idiot but he's maybe an idiot with his heart in the right place in fact there's part of me that actually respects this guy and although you might not believe it the scene is kinda true with elon musk and even bill gates all of these guys shared that they became obscenely rich so rich that there was no possible way that they could spend all of their money and they all sat down in front of the mirror and said what the hell am i going to do with this giant stack of cash but i realized oh my god we're making a lot of money here what do i do with this [Music] and the simple reality is the only way you can blow that sort of cash is by giving it away but what to do you know you could as well try and generate some good with it but with elon musk 90 of what he comes out with is completely unfounded outrageously wrong and just like the free electric people give it a pass with a 90-something percent approval rating but you can't take it from him uh he actually tried to do some stuff and with mask it's not all although you've got to be realistic musk didn't do any of this there was a great team of engineers working on a government contract now you can say that e musk was the visionary here but they did the motivator and there is some truth in this but that doesn't mean that he gets a free pass on the ninety percent of the time when he's talking utter crap and this guy the movie claims that he's worth some four billion dollars and he's giving 99 of it away which i've got to be honest that's not far off what i would do and now this isn't some sort of moral hypothetical brag just think about it for a second giving away 99 of it gives this guy a mere 40 million dollars yes real subsistence level stuff there and this is of course assuming that none of the money that he spends none of that 99 of the money that he spends generates any extra revenue in things like patents and the such like the simple reality is if you don't give away that four billion dollars you die with four billion dollars in the bank and what would that well what the hell is the point of that and this is where i could relate to folks like musk and manage here but i just cannot relate to people like trump who are obsessed with how much money they own how much wealth they own and spend years of their life simply trying to get an extra zero on their wealth why what's the point is there really anything that you can buy with four billion dollars that you can't buy with 40 million honestly mind-blowingly rich people who obsess about their wealth are just a an enigma to me i just don't understand them i might as well try and understand the motives of a serial killer they just make no sense to me sure it's all hypothetical and it's all but guaranteed that no one watching this video just like myself will ever be in a position where we're that rich but i guess in some small way it's nice to know that there are billionaires out there who even us little people can relate to so i'm going to start promoting a single interesting scientific goodie at the end of each video which i'll provide amazon affiliate links to below and this week's neat little scientific toy will set you back about a dollar a piece they're diffraction gratings and what's really cool about them is when you look at the street lights through them if they're leds you get a nice continuous spectrum of them however with sodium street lights you can see the atomic emission lines in the street lights or in fluorescent lights these are things that i've had in my wallet ever since i actually found out they existed and i've lost count of how many times i pull these things out at the end of the evening just to show people the difference between the various street lights and jaws just hit the floor even fairly respectable scientists and you sort of give them away and it's like wow this is the greatest thing ever why didn't i know these things existed and that that i can have it for real and you see that gleam in their eyes that happiness that oh my god christmases come early this year yeah i can't recommend these things enough they're just awesome so if you like that hit the thumbs up button and most importantly subscribe and hit the little notification bell to make sure that you don't miss out on new video releases and if you want to see some behind-the-scenes footage on my blog i'll leave links to the voice of thunder channel below and this ever if you really like this channel and want to support it directly you can do it through patreon [Music] you
