[Music] before the f-150 is not just the most popular truck out there it's one of the most popular vehicles that's right there's a myriad of different types of configurations that you can set up with that truck it's insane yes but there are also six engine options now for 2019 in the f-150 so how you to decide which engine is best for you and this is an expert guide regarding the f-150 and we're going to give you the pluses and minuses of all the engines all you Ford owners out there do you get annoyed by your auto start-stop feature well now you can simply install this the auto stop Eliminator to prevent your vehicle auto stopped art feature on every ignition cycle just use the link below and go to Auto stop Eliminator com to see how easy it is to install and use this little device [Music] yes well let's kick it off with the f-150 XL which is a base trim level and it comes out of the box with a 3.3 liter naturally aspirated v6 boom base engine all right now you drove one of these in the desert I think right yes it was in Arizona it was being compared to other trucks like the Ram 1500 mm with a three six and also the turbocharged four-cylinder Silverado and the 3.3 liter I mean it's basically there for cost you know you want to bring your initial cost down right right and it produces 290 horsepower and 265 pound feet of torque alright what else that does it have a 10 speed automatic transmission no it doesn't it's made it to a six-speed automatic once again to keep the base price down but it does have dual fuel injection which is nice so what are pluses and minuses of this engine so first it's the price right that's a plus low entry price secondly its fuel efficiency this engine is EPA rated at 19 city 24 highway and 21 combined it's not the most fuel efficient engine on the list but it's still up there yeah now this is available with four-wheel drive yeah you can get it configured with four-wheel drive and a couple different trim packages actually Ford is really good of offering choice right this is why we're making this guide because maybe there's too much choice all of a sudden now what are some of the minuses yeah I would imagine probably not all the power no it's not it's not class-leading as far as horsepower is concerned it's not class-leading as far as torque if you want in the torquey v6 base engine the GM 4.3 liter is there if you wanted a more high horsepower one it's the RAM engine the 3.6 v6 really quick one other slight negative on the beginner engine the 3.3 liter v6 it's you have to rev it up high when I drove it in Arizona it's very typical for that type of engine right all the power is high in the band you know you have to rev it to like 6,000 rpm and that's typical with a v6 like that okay so you got to wrap it really hard it doesn't have a lot of horsepower and it gets decent mileage but not the best mileage out of all the engines we're talking about today yeah but that's the most cost effective make sense let's go to the 2.7 EcoBoost [Music] that's intention that I had an opportunity to have a lot of experience with myself and it is in my mind one of their best power plants its compact it's relatively inexpensive it was fairly frugal but most importantly it was powerful yes once again what are the pros it's the power yeah I mean let's not fool ourselves 325 horsepower 400 pound-feet of torque it's made it to a 10 speed automatic I mean you're getting a lot of performance in that little package by the way it's $995 over that base engine so only a grand more and you're getting all that yeah that's so you get a better transmission and you get a much more powerful engine yes it's a huge performance boost I mean if you put those two trucks together the 3 3 and a 2 7 EcoBoost boom the 2 7 takes off like a racehorse yeah but what about efficiency it's still there for two wheel drive 2.7 liter the EPA rating is 20 City 26 highway and 22 combine it's kind of a mind-boggling number 26 highway yeah for a gas engine that's a 10 speed but it's there we've never been able to achieve it and a real-world testing but that's the EPA rating all right so what are the cons well the con there is maybe just one it's not the most payload rated truck and the f-150 lineup and it's not the highest towing engine well that makes sense considering its displacement and everything yes so if you want if you're looking for those incredibly high numbers this is not the engine for you but you know what the engine is for me and for you I know you love this engine what's the coyote it's the 5 liter coyote [Music] dude so once again let's look at the price difference right so when you compare at the base three point three right to the coyote its 1995 bucks okay so two thousand two grand okay thousand dollar premium but what do you get for that money you get one of the best v8s in its class yes so 395 horsepower 400 pound-feet of torque once again you're getting your ten-speed yep and remember we had that two wheel drive truck crew cab XLT it was gray and silver remember yes yes it wasn't that the quickest truck of the like almost out there yeah it was especially at high elevation it was really fast in fact the only thing it was faster was its EcoBoost bigger brother yes and by bigger any more than one horsepower right so it's really impressive this this five liter no matter what they say no matter how much marketing dollars are spent on EcoBoost engines that five liter is still there and the cop in the pro the plus for it is the sound let's start already that sounds amazing it is also a really flexible engine and it's a similar power plant that they're using in the Mustang yes you can tune that engine as well yes you can and you can get the maximum payload package on an f-150 with a five liter and you could haul up to three thousand two hundred seventy pounds in your truck that's impressive I'm not talking about towing it's just the payload number yeah but what about toing toing is really good as well over 11,000 pounds we've told with this truck on the ID gauntlet I did really well it did do really well but what are the cons the cons you know the low-end torque yes if you put it in a drag strip it will do well in the quarter-mile but that initial get going the EcoBoost kind of takes over yeah and also I would add to that fact that at high elevation you really do lose power because it's not turbocharged like pretty much almost all their other engines on this list yes so if you live in a high elevation state like Colorado or maybe any of your driving at those elevations all the time maybe consider an EcoBoost instead which reminds me I think we're going up to the big boy EcoBoost yes the 3/5 EcoBoost v-six [Music] and we've have a lot of experience with this engine indeed we do so this currently we're in the second gen of this engine it's got dual injection like all of their engines are right all of their gas engines and the weighting is 375 horsepower and 475 feet of torque so the horsepower is actually a smidge less than the v8 yeah but the torque I mean 470 that is a huge that's class-leading basically right now how much does it cost yeah it's it's gonna be a premium obviously yes two thousand five hundred and ninety five dollars over the base v6 so around twenty six hundred dollars more than the base three six yes so we're getting up there but not a heck of a lot still right but once again it comes with a ten speed automatic transmission right yes and it is I believe with the right configuration it's one of the best towing vehicles in its class absolutely this is how you get your best towing rating thirteen thousand two hundred pounds with the 3.5 liter EcoBoost and we've tested it numerous times on the I'd gauntlet I don't know how many times we've been up there and it and it just goes up at speed limit every single time no matter how much weight you put behind it it's there yeah it's a rocket yeah it's really impressive what are some of the downsides yes well it has struggled we have struggled to meet EPA ratings right it's rated in a four by four 17mpg city/23mpg reign in the Eco mode right all those modes are there but you know in our experience we have struggled to hit those high numbers that is correct it is a fairly compliant engine in terms of daily driving it's fairly quiet and they do do they ought meant the sound yes yes the EcoBoost unfortunately and there's some sound augmentation there yeah some people like that some people really don't like that so that's another con I think - well at least in my book we have two more engines to talk about this is a lot dude alright alright so forth is currently the only half-ton truck out there in the United States with a turbo diesel [Music] that's right right GM is gonna have their three litre straight-six yeah that's soon but it's still a little ways off right there saying June July right this is still April May right and then in 2020 RAM is saying they're gonna have their three liter equal yeah they're gonna bring it back and hopefully with some improvement but it's not here so right now if you want a turbo diesel in half done this is the only way to do it for the next couple months and it's a three liter and it's they call it the power stroke and it's related to a Landrover engine doesn't been used in land rovers right but it's been beefed up a little bit for the f-150 well let's talk about you know it's a little torque is what it's all about right torque and fuel efficiency is the name of the game 250 horsepower 440 pound feet of torque not the most torquey engine in this bunch right as far as the other gas engines we just talked about yeah but the payoff is mpg right yeah dude and real-world mpg at at so EPA rated at 20 City 25 highway and 22 combined for a well option truck right if you're a fleet customer that's how you can get that 30 mpg number which is a huge number but you have to get a base truck only for fleet use rear drive rear drive with a diesel so that's not easy to get because you and I don't own fleets right or at least not yet not yet so so still if fuel efficiency is king with this engine including the real world first truck without the trailer okay without the trailer right so we went 98 miles obviously and the gallons was basically for mmm-hmm so we basically confirmed EPA number but let's just double check ninety eight divided by four point zero one twenty four point four it's not bad we basically came very close to the epa rating of 25 for a four-wheel drive powerstroke f150 another plus is payload and towing right because usually diesel engines in these trucks are not highly rated right this engine is you know 99 pounds of payload over 11,000 pounds of towing it's got it what's the price difference this is the - it's very pricey yeah so they don't even show the price comparison to the 3.3 liter base but if you can compare it with a 2 7 EcoBoost it's $4,000 more just for the diesel right but then it also comes like is a lariat package which is already expensive right and then the Platinum etc etc etc by the time you're done you're looking at like 60 65 thousand bucks easily another - is is the power delivery at the top-end you know it's typical with diesels yeah they kind of follow for clarity yeah so you accelerate well and then at 40 45 miles an hour it slows down right so it's very typical but that's how it is let's talk about one of the best engines out there though oh boy for 2019 Ford is offering the highest [Music] this is basically a raptor motor in an f-150 limited it's a 3.5 liter yes it's still 3.5 but it's got internals that are beefed up it's made for higher pressures higher temperatures that is correct well the horsepower rating is 415 yep pork is 510 510 it's a wrap it's a raptor engine and it's only available in the raptor and then the limited trim level he actually did a video on that comparing the two trucks and talking about them how they contrast and the bottom line is this not only is that one of the fastest trucks out there it was one of the fastest vehicles we tested last year yeah so that's the plus if you want speed even though the limited and the Raptor are kind of heavy vehicles right there fully loaded with leather and Sun roofs and all that stuff yeah it still was incredibly quick we'll see look at the video right yes yes it is it is the quickest truck we've ever tested in Colorado five point nine two seconds but there's a lot of cons right well it's price really I mean because it's once again its high-end engine the Raptor starts at about 54,000 right that's bass bass Raptor that you may never find Yeah right good luck finding one for that price and then the limited truck starts at 68,000 so we're talking high dollar machines but if you want the power and the speed you got to pay that's the way it goes well hopefully this guide has helped you a little bit and seeing some real-world performance with these engines that's right now remember there's a whole slew of other engines available on their heavier duty vehicles we're not covering those this time but hopefully in the near future heck yeah in twenty twenty Super Duty is going to get more engines 7.3 liter gas engines coming baby and go back to tearful truck comm from a news views in real world
