[applause] - We're here to watch members of our Homicide section be promoted to sergeant and-- and lieutenant today. <i> It's a special day.</i> <i> narrator: Veteran detective Ryan Vaught</i> <i> is up for the next case.</i> <i> - The Homicide Unit's a very close-knit group.</i> <i> I consider everyone part of my extended family.</i> <i> But now they're moving on to their--</i> <i> their new assignments.</i> - Lieutenant Jimmie Turner. [applause] - Gonna miss 'em all. <i> [tense music]</i> <i> narrator: A few miles away</i> <i> in the Gentilly neighborhood...</i> <i> [line trilling]</i> [sirens wailing] <i> narrator: Police and EMS respond</i> <i> to find a woman lying in a pool of blood...</i> <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> Dead.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> [clock ticking]</i> <i> ♪ </i> - So we were gonna sit down and celebrate and have a nice lunch, and then we got notified there's a homicide. Most times, when you have plans for the day, you know, a tragic event'll happen, and you have to give up those plans to go work it. - I'll tell you, it's real sad to say, but anytime, any day, any place, yeah. <i> ♪ </i> <i> ♪ </i> [camera shutter clicks] [police radio chatter] <i> ♪ </i> - Hey, Tim. <i> - She's in the rear bedroom...</i> laying on the floor. <i> - We have any ID on her yet?</i> - A lady came running up to me a little while ago, and she gave us that name. - Shakeitha? - Mm-hmm. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: 25-year-old Shakeitha Johnson</i> <i> was born and raised in New Orleans</i> <i> and went by the nickname Banana.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> She is survived by her parents</i> <i> and two sisters.</i> <i> ♪ </i> [indistinct conversation] [police radio chatter] - Neighbors say it was her birthday yesterday. Just tragic. <i> ♪ </i> - Damn. <i> ♪ </i> <i> Oh, God.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> Multiple gunshot wounds. - Yeah, yeah.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> - She got it to the head, left shoulder,</i> <i> right arm.</i> Ugh. Brutal. <i> ♪ </i> There's casings inside. <i> [camera shutter clicking]</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: CSI collects three casings inside</i> <i> and three more leading into the front yard.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - Door was not forced, right? - No. <i> ♪ </i> - So maybe she opens the door. - Open the door and boom, boom. - Bang, bang. - Probably went out there. - Yeah. <i> - Slipped in her own blood.</i> - Makes me think she was trying to escape. <i> narrator: Footprints in the blood</i> <i> match Banana's slippers.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> ♪ </i> - It's a horrific way to spend the last few seconds of your life. You know somebody's coming to kill you. <i> You know you can't get away.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - [sighs] We have our work cut out for us. - I'll start the canvass. - Thank you. <i> ♪ </i> [knocking at door] [woman sobbing] [people shouting] - Ma'am, you think this might be one of your family members? - That's my little sister. - All right, if you don't mind, just go and talk to this detective real briefly, and maybe we'll have some more answers for you in a few minutes, OK? - OK. - All right? <i> ♪ </i> I got Bruce doing the canvass. - Hello? - And then I got Ripp talking to the family member right now. <i> - To the family member, yeah. OK.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - I interviewed the victim's sister. Apparently, the victim wrecked that car over a week ago. - OK. - That car belongs to one of her best friends, Lyneisha Tennessee. When the victim said she couldn't pay for the damages, she's been having a lot of death threats. <i> ♪ </i> So it sounds like everything's over this stupid car. - All right. <i> ♪ </i> - There's some conflict resolution issues in this city. <i> ♪ </i> - Banana! No! - Usually, when you have female victims, it's gonna be someone that knows them. It's gonna be a pretty close person to them. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: Vaught and Detective Theo Kent</i> <i> head to an address for the car owner,</i> <i> Lyneisha Tennessee.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - Is this it? Is this them? <i> ♪ </i> [sighs] Ms. Tennessee, how are you? - I don't know what's going on. - All right. <i> narrator: Tennessee says she just found out</i> <i> her friend Banana was murdered.</i> - Why don't you take a ride up to our office? That way, we can talk in private. - All right. - OK. <i> ♪ </i> To your right, that door that says "Homicide Section." I just want to see what kind of feelings she did harbor about the vehicle. Have a seat in that back chair. <i> Supposedly, she and Banana were best friends.</i> All right. <i> ♪ </i> - I'm just trying to figure out how the hell this happened. <i> ♪ </i> - So are we. So are we. Who would be the last person with her? - I don't know. I don't... - Were you over there last night? - Yeah, I believe I remember seeing one out there. - OK. <i> narrator: Tennessee says Banana</i> <i> wouldn't pay to fix the car.</i> - Had to be a big hassle for you, though, huh? I mean... - It was crazy, but what could I do? <i> ♪ </i> - [chuckles] My mom used to always tell me, "Stay away from that girl. She nothing but trouble," and I'm like, "Nobody can keep me away from her." - What--what drew you so much to her? - When me and my kids needed a place to go, she's just always, you know, been there for me. <i> ♪ </i> - You do not seem to be grieving over-- over her loss. <i> ♪ </i> - I can't cry right now. I just can't. - Um... <i> ♪ </i> Did you have anything to do with her murder today? <i> ♪ </i> <i> [dramatic music]</i> [police radio chatter] <i> ♪ </i> - No. What? No. I can't get nobody killed. <i> ♪ </i> - So, who do you think would want to hurt Banana? - Jazz. - Wait, Jazz was living with her? - Yeah. <i> narrator: Tennessee says Banana</i> <i> had an ongoing feud with her roommate, Jazz.</i> - She not gonna let nobody mess with her. - Her and Jazz? - Yeah. Banana got a text message from energy saying that her light bill was $307, and she went there fussing about her light bill or whatever. <i> narrator: She claims Jazz refused to help pay the bill.</i> Banana was so mad at her that Banana wanted her out the house. <i> ♪ </i> I was helping her. - Jazz was there? - What was she doing? <i> ♪ </i> - What's her real name? <i> ♪ </i> - All right, I'm gonna step out for a second, and I'll be right back, OK? <i> ♪ </i> So I'm gonna run our victim in our report database. <i> ♪ </i> See what kind of complaints she's made. Here we go. Got a disturbance report. Banana claims that her roommate was threatening her. <i> ♪ </i> I'm looking up a picture right now, and I'd like to show it to Ms. Tennessee. <i> ♪ </i> See if it's the same person she knows as Jazz. <i> ♪ </i> Hey. Sorry about the wait. Take a look at this individual and tell me if you recognize her. <i> ♪ </i> - That looks like Jazz? <i> ♪ </i> That's her? - Mm-hmm. - OK. You ever seen Jazz with a gun? <i> ♪ </i> - No. - Where could I go find Jazz? <i> ♪ </i> - I don't even know. <i> ♪ </i> - I think Jazz is gonna be our strongest suspect right now. <i> ♪ </i> Tossing her into the streets with no place to go? <i> That right there could be motivation</i> <i> to want to kill.</i> Definitely need to talk to her. - Yes, and we need to get contact information on her. <i> ♪ </i> - No active warrants for her, and no local addresses. <i> ♪ </i> It's gonna take a little bit more work to try and track down ol' Jazz here. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: The next day...</i> - Theo, check this out. - That's our deceased victim there. <i> narrator: In the database,</i> <i> Vaught discovers body cam video</i> <i> from the officer that filed Banana's complaint</i> <i> against Jazz.</i> - That's Shakeitha. Banana. This is crazy. Right outside where she was killed. <i> narrator: The video was recorded</i> <i> a week before the murder.</i> <i> narrator: Banana tells the officer</i> <i> that Jazz sent her threatening texts.</i> - Wow. - Yeah. - Sad. <i> narrator: She gives Jazz's phone number to the officer.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - Oh. <i> ♪ </i> Banana pretty much foreshadowed her own death. <i> ♪ </i> She says, "I-I hope I make it to my birthday. I hope I make it to next week." <i> ♪ </i> One week later, she was dead. <i> ♪ </i> I got to be cool. Maintain my calm so I don't say something that makes her nervous or makes her feel like she's a suspect in this and then refuses to meet with me. <i> narrator: Vaught calls Jazz.</i> <i> [line trilling]</i> - Hi, Jazz. - Ryan Vaught, New Orleans Police Department. I understand you're friends with Shakeitha? - I'm the one in charge of her homicide investigation, OK? <i> ♪ </i> <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> - I understand that you two lived together for a short period of time? - OK, so yeah, you-- you may hold some information that-- that would be beneficial to me. Are you available to meet today? <i> - Uh...</i> - OK. - You--what time you think you can get here? - All right, we'll see you around 5:00. Thanks. - Bye. - I would say, let her come in and say what she want. - Yeah. Some of the words she used on there, like "alibi"... just like, "You have any suspects?" I was like, "Why?" I don't know if that's guilt. It could be taken both ways. <i> - Yeah. - If you're worried about</i> <i> your loved one, and then</i> <i> you're gonna want to know what's going on with the case.</i> So we'll see. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: That evening...</i> - Jazz was supposed to be here, and she stood me up. <i> ♪ </i> <i> [line trilling]</i> - It's Detective Vaught. I was just calling to see if you were gonna make it today or not. - Yeah, absolutely. We could do it tomorrow. - All right, I'll talk to you tomorrow. - Bye. Well, there you have it. She, um, forgot that she had to come down to the Homicide Unit office. - To talk about the murder of her friend. - Slipped her mind, you know? 'Cause, yeah, happens every day. - I just don't like the idea that it's no concern. It--it's just like, OK, let's wait. - We'll see if she shows then. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: As the clock winds down...</i> <i> [line trilling]</i> <i> - You have reached the voice mailbox of 5-0...</i> - Oh, my God. So I'm frustrated. <i> ♪ </i> Maybe I should send her a message, huh? These kids, they love their text messages. <i> ♪ </i> - Just say, "Are you coming today or not?" - I'm trying to be a little tactful about it there, Drew. - [chuckling] - Lure her in, dude. - Got to get some-- some, like, live worms or, like, a sardine. Trout, I don't know. Is that a good fish, trout? - Stop talking fish lingo. You have never gone fishing a day in your life. [laughter] - Give me this phone. Let me see. <i> ♪ </i> - Rob's a young guy. He's into this texting stuff. - How about that? - "I appreciate you coming to meet me. Can I expect to see you soon?" - [snaps fingers] That's it. <i> ♪ </i> [phone chimes] - Here. This is her: "Stop texting my phone." She says, "I'll see you when I see you." [chuckles softly] She's really going about this all wrong. - [sighs] - You have a way with the ladies, Ryan. <i> ♪ </i> <i> [rapid ticking]</i> <i> narrator: In the first 48,</i> <i> New Orleans Homicide responded to the murder</i> <i> of 25-year-old Shakeitha Johnson,</i> <i> known as Banana;</i> <i> learned from a friend</i> <i> that Banana had a fight</i> <i> with her former roommate, Jazz;</i> <i> discovered Jazz allegedly sent</i> <i> threatening texts to Banana,</i> <i> but have been unable to get her to come forward.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> Several days later...</i> <i> ♪ </i> - Can I get you anything? - Have a seat right there. <i> narrator: Jazz finally shows up.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - OK. I'm Ryan Vaught. This is my partner, Theo Kent. Most important fact here is that we get to the truth. <i> ♪ </i> Regardless of how sinister it may look or how much trouble it's gonna get us in. We just need the truth. - OK. All right. - You duckin' and dodgin' me makes it a little-- makes it look a little bit more suspicious, right? If you know something about this... - She did. It was brutal. <i> ♪ </i> - I want to make sure I'm completely clear. What about the text messages you sent... where you told her it would be her last weekend? <i> ♪ </i> <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> ♪ </i> - She got killed. Because... <i> narrator: Jazz explains her text was a threat</i> <i> to get Banana's government-assisted housing</i> <i> taken away.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - You say that those texts were taken out of context? - OK. - That would have been important for me to know early on, right? - Mm-hmm. - OK. - OK. - What were they using her for? <i> narrator: She claims Banana would sell</i> <i> her prescription medication.</i> - What do you consider dope? - Heroin, OK. <i> ♪ </i> - We're gonna step out for a second, OK? - So many people that have motive right now. The victim had a lot of people in an out of that house, and that means a lot of motive, a lot of opportunity. <i> But I don't think Jazz had anything to do</i> <i> with Banana's murder.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: 16 days into the investigation...</i> - Come on, come on, come on. Come on, come on. Come on. <i> narrator: Vaught gets a huge break</i> <i> that takes the case in a new direction.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - [sighs] So I was at home on my day off, right? And I got a phone call from a-- from a person that has information on my-- on the Banana investigation. I was able to convince them to come down and come talk, so hopefully the information is good. Could be the break I need. <i> ♪ </i> I'm Ryan Vaught. This is Robert Barrere with the Homicide Unit. So, take me through it. What's going on? - Now, who did this? <i> ♪ </i> - All right, let me go back. So Tennessee told Shakeitha that Boom killed somebody... - Mm-hmm. - And then she must've went back and told Boom, "Hey, look, I told Shakeitha." - Mm-hmm. - And then next thing you know, Boom shows up and starts shooting her? - Mm-hmm. <i> ♪ </i> - You know who Boom is? - You saw him? <i> narrator: The witness believes Boom</i> <i> was with Tennessee yesterday afternoon.</i> - And you saw Boom at that time? - Do you think she's all right? - What'd he look like? How does he wear his hair? Let's start there. - Anything else? <i> ♪ </i> - Excuse me one second. - We're not gonna let anything happen to you, OK? <i> ♪ </i> <i> This person seems pretty credible.</i> He or she was able to tell me about things that are only known to us. It was never released to the media. And if what--if-- if this person is telling me is true, that Boom killed Banana because she knew that he had killed someone in the past, and-- and he knows that Tennessee's talking, <i> he could be looking to hurt Tennessee next.</i> <i> ♪ </i> I'm just gonna try and grab her. She could be the whole linchpin to this whole investigation. <i> ♪ </i> You're in? Let's do it, bro. <i> ♪ </i> All right. - Absolutely. <i> ♪ </i> I got to try and flip her, tell me who Boom was. <i> ♪ </i> - Is this her? <i> ♪ </i> - I'll be back, Ma. <i> ♪ </i> <i> - You all right?</i> <i> ♪ </i> There's some things we found out about Banana's killing, and I don't think you've been truthful with me from day one. <i> ♪ </i> I think you might be in danger too, OK? I'm--I don't know who killed her. I don't know. I don't know. How could I know that? - Absolutely you do. <i> ♪ </i> You know certain information, and at some point, that person may think of you as a liability. OK? <i> ♪ </i> - Who's Boom? <i> ♪ </i> [police radio chatter] <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> - Mm. <i> ♪ </i> But you're having a relationship with Boom. - How do you know him? - I know him through... I guess around the hood. <i> ♪ </i> - What's his last name? - What street he's living on? Street? <i> ♪ </i> - Yesterday, where'd you go? - How'd you leave her house? - You understand there's video in that area? <i> ♪ </i> - OK, how'd you get home? - From who? - OK. <i> ♪ </i> Now we're getting somewhere. OK? - Did Boom know Banana? - He's been over to her house? - Mm-hmm. - Why protect him? - These people got power. Even if I make it look like I have something to do with this, I still could be [bleep]. I'm not about to put my life in it, sir. I'm really not. <i> ♪ </i> - What's his first name? Give me something. - If I knew it, I swear to God, I would give y'all whatever y'all want on him. If--if I knew where the bitch was at, I'd call him for y'all, everything. - What's his phone number? You got that? - Yeah. - What is it? <i> narrator: She gives up Boom's number.</i> - Anything else for her? - No. - We're trying. <i> ♪ </i> <i> I think the big motivating factor</i> for Ms. Tennessee to lie to me right now is-- is fear. <i> But at least she gave us a number for him.</i> <i> ♪ </i> I'm gonna try and call Boom, see if I can't convince him to come down here and--and talk to me. <i> [line trilling]</i> <i> - You have reached the voice mailbox of...</i> - Hi, this is Detective Vaught, New Orleans Police Department. I'm currently investigating the murder of Shakeitha Johnson. I'm trying to make contact with anyone who knew her to assist in the investigation. If you could call me back when you get this message, please, I'd appreciate it. Thank you. <i> ♪ </i> We'll see if he calls back. <i> ♪ </i> Hey, Rob. You're not gonna believe this. <i> ♪ </i> I just got a voicemail... from an attorney stating he represents a Delvin Wilson. He said he's returning my call from a voice message that I left yesterday. The only person I called yesterday was Boom. - Really? - Looks like Boom, upon receiving my message, called his attorney, and his attorney in turn called me. I think we just identified who Boom is. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: Detective Rob Barrere</i> <i> runs the name Delvin Wilson</i> <i> in the database.</i> - Here he is. <i> narrator: 28-year-old Delvin Wilson</i> <i> has prior convictions</i> <i> for possession of drug paraphernalia</i> <i> and illegal carrying of weapons.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - He's wanted for murder. - Get out. - Shooting from a few days ago. <i> ♪ </i> - Whose case is that? <i> ♪ </i> - Looks like it's Barret's case. <i> ♪ </i> - You got him out wanted? - I do. <i> ♪ </i> Does he have a nickname? - Mm-hmm. Boom. Delvin "Boom" Wilson. Supposedly, he was disrespected at a card game. He allegedly shot a 2-year-old, who is the victim's nephew. <i> ♪ </i> - Oh, man. - There's a little blood trail to where the kid ran to. Saved his life. - Ooh. <i> ♪ </i> - His car is in Georgia, Atlanta, in front of a house that he's been linked to through the marshals. - So I had a witness come forward and say that a person, name of Boom, is responsible for killing my victim. - What caliber did you have? - I had .40s. - I had .40s. Detective Jenkins has a Boom case, but she couldn't get enough evidence to make an arrest. <i> ♪ </i> - You have Boom as a suspect? - Yes. - This guys is just killing half of the population of New Orleans. For which case? - It's from my very first one. - It makes me wonder, because my witness says that my victim was killed because they knew about Boom killing someone in the recent past, so it makes me wonder about your case. <i> ♪ </i> I'm gonna try and get a little bit more evidence to tie him to Banana's murder. So I'm gonna send a request to our ballistics lab to have 'em compare the casings from my crime scene to those casings collected from Barret's crime scene and see if they were fired by the same weapon. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: 38 days into the investigation,</i> <i> as U.S. marshals continue their search for Boom...</i> - Guess who called me this morning? <i> narrator: The case takes a surprising turn.</i> - Who? - Delvin Wilson, AKA Boom. - Hey, Delvin, it's Detective Vaught. You called? - Detective Vaught, New Orleans Police Department. <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> - We got the wrong guy for what? I'm--I'm investigating a homicide that occurred on Gentilly of a friend of yours. - Uh, Shakeitha. - She was known as Banana. - You'd been over to her house, and I'm trying to meet up with all-- anyone that was a friend of hers, and--and-- and see if they give me any information on why she was killed. - Right, and-- - Right, and that's why I was kind of hoping you could help me find the person that did that. But I'd prefer to talk to you in person about it. - [chuckles softly] "I-I don't believe in killing females"? This guy can't lie very well. There's no telling where he is right now. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: A few weeks later...</i> <i> [line trilling]</i> - Homicide, this is Vaught. <i> narrator: The ballistic results come in.</i> - Good, all right. And you're positive? There's no--OK. All right, just had to ask. All right, yeah. Thank you. <i> ♪ </i> The casings from Barret's case and my case are a match. <i> There's no doubt in my mind right now</i> <i> that Boom is responsible for the murder of Banana.</i> <i> ♪ </i> The matching ballistics coupled with the information gathered from our source of information is enough to author a warrant for Delvin for the crime of murder. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: The next day...</i> <i> [phone ringing]</i> <i> - Hey, Bar.</i> Oh, yeah? <i> narrator: Before Vaught issues a warrant for Boom...</i> - Wow, really? All right. Thanks. Bye. Guess what? Boom was found murdered in Georgia along with his brother. <i> ♪ </i> - Wow. - They were shot and killed in a car, and the car was set on fire. <i> ♪ </i> Check this out. <i> - Two dead bodies were found in a burned-out vehicle</i> <i> in the woods of Crawford County on Sunday.</i> <i> The bodies were badly burned.</i> <i> They are investigating the case as a possible homicide.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - They burned that car. - That's wild, man. - It's crazy, huh? Probably had 'em identified pretty quick, and then they contacted Barret. - Mm-hmm. - He was leading that kind of lifestyle that ultimately brought on his demise. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: With his suspect dead,</i> <i> Vaught closes his case.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - Although we have enough to prove probable cause that he committed this murder, obviously, he can't be brought to justice on it. <i> ♪ </i> <i> So it will be a clearance by exception.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: The next day,</i> <i> Vaught and Barrere go to update Banana's family.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - Hello. - Hello. - Hello. - Hi. - Mr. Fred. - Hello. - How you doing, sir? This is kind of bittersweet news, OK? Do y'all recognize this individual? <i> ♪ </i> - Never. - Nope. - We believe that he's the person that killed Banana. <i> ♪ </i> - We never seen him before. - I never seen him before, either. - Never. - What's his name? - Delvin Wilson. He goes by the nickname Boom. - Mm. - He had a connection to-- to Shakeitha. I have one witness that did the right thing and came forward and said that he was responsible for it, and I have physical evidence that links him to--to that crime scene. - Wow. - [scoffs] - But he fled the state and he was murdered in Georgia. <i> ♪ </i> - He been killed? - He has been killed. - What? - Mm-hmm. <i> ♪ </i> - I'm glad, man. I-I-I mean, I hate people losing their lives, but you took my child's life, dude. Look at you. You're a bum. <i> ♪ </i> - Yes, indeed. - Unfortunately, the reasons why, you know, he did this, I don't think we'll ever know. - I'm happy that somebody speak up. - It's brought some closure. - Good. - You know, I know it'll never bring her back. - Right. - But God did his job.
