[knocking at door] Tulsa police. <i> narrator: And the clock is ticking.</i> <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> For homicide detectives,</i> <i> their chance of solving a murder</i> <i> is cut in half</i> <i> if they don't get a lead</i> <i> within the first 48 hours.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> Tulsa, Oklahoma.</i> <i> 1:40 a.m.</i> <i> At a quiet hotel</i> <i> on the east side of town,</i> <i> a call comes in to 911.</i> [sirens wailing] <i> narrator: Police and paramedics respond</i> <i> and find a young man</i> <i> shot three times.</i> <i> They rush him to the hospital.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> But doctors can't save him.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> [somber music]</i> - Well, I just got woken up by Sergeant Walker. Guess we're heading to a hotel over here. <i> narrator: Detective Justin Ritter,</i> <i> a 14-year veteran of Tulsa PD,</i> <i> will lead the investigation.</i> - Sometimes my wife works night shift, so I had to drop my kids off. I'm lucky enough to have other family members here in town that I can rely on. If you want to work Homicide, you just have to go with it. Murders don't happen on a nine-to-five schedule. <i> ♪ </i> <i> [eerie music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> Hey, man. What's the deal? - A gentleman has rented the room for some sort of get-together. During this, some altercation occurs. The victim is shot outside of this room. - OK. What was his name? - Cedrick. - Cedrick? <i> narrator: 27-year-old Cedrick Gilmer</i> <i> worked as a customer service rep for a phone company.</i> <i> He was recently engaged</i> <i> and leaves behind four kids.</i> <i> [solemn music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> - We got witnesses in the room. <i> narrator: Several people were in the hotel room</i> <i> when Cedrick was shot.</i> - Go get 'em all downtown. - All right. - We can get 'em on film. Get 'em-- interview good. <i> ♪ </i> - We got blood spatter on the wall up here, just next to the front door. <i> ♪ </i> - 9-millimeter casings. <i> ♪ </i> That's a good amount of blood. It looks like he was probably standing on this landing outside the front door when he was shot. <i> ♪ </i> They were definitely having a party here. <i> ♪ </i> Looks like there was quite a few people. <i> ♪ </i> Video right there. <i> narrator: On the building's corner,</i> <i> the team finds two surveillance cameras.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - The video's gonna be pretty dang good. - Oh, dude, we may get a sweet shot. - We can just get the video downloaded. - I'm gonna go downtown. - OK. <i> narrator: While the team begins scouring</i> <i> the hotel complex for evidence,</i> <i> Ritter heads to Homicide</i> <i> to interview the witnesses from the party.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - All right. - OK. - We appreciate that. How'd you know to get there tonight? <i> ♪ </i> - OK. What time did you get there? - OK. <i> [dark music]</i> <i> narrator: She says two men burst into the room,</i> <i> and everyone hit the floor.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - And what were they saying? <i> narrator: She says the two men forced Cedrick outside.</i> - So they're hitting him while they're in the room, and then they try to drag him out, and he struggles with 'em? - Anything jump out at you other than the bandana, like what were they wearing? - OK. <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> She seems pretty shook up,</i> <i> so we're gonna have patrol take her home.</i> <i> I'm definitely curious as to why</i> this specific hotel room was chosen and why these suspects think that this victim has money. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: Back at the crime scene...</i> <i> ♪ </i> - I found a couple handguns over here. <i> narrator: Patrol finds a .40- and .380-caliber pistol</i> <i> hidden in the bushes.</i> <i> And nearby...</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: A 9-millimeter,</i> <i> the same caliber as the casings found</i> <i> where Cedrick was shot.</i> - Holy [bleep]. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: Across the parking lot...</i> - What is that? - That is unbelievable. It's like a scavenger hunt. [chuckles] - Town Car, four-door. - And, uh... - Justin? <i> - How's everything going, man?</i> - There's three guns found over here in this parking lot. And then, uh, by the gate, there's two cell phones and some cash and a bandana. - That's crazy. <i> - So it looks like robbery</i> <i> kind of occurred here.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: With a possible motive,</i> <i> Ritter heads in to see if the second witness</i> <i> knows why anyone would target the party.</i> - I know this is goofy, dude, but at least keeps you warm. Do you understand what's going on? This ain't just a robbery anymore. So this is a murder, all right? - Yeah. - Tell me how you knew how to go to this party. - On what page? <i> narrator: He says VIP is a private group</i> <i> on Facebook.</i> - I can't get to it? OK. So did VIP-- were they informed about this party tonight? - Yes. - What's in the room that somebody wants to rob? Does Cedrick have money? - When they pulled his pockets out, he didn't have no money. - Really? <i> narrator: He says earlier that day,</i> <i> Cedrick posted an image to the VIP Facebook page</i> <i> of himself holding a handful of cash.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - How much? <i> ♪ </i> - $16,000. <i> ♪ </i> <i> ♪ </i> - So when he's inviting people to this party, he flashes 16 grand on Facebook? - Yeah. - You know those guys that did the robbery? - Mm-mm. <i> narrator: He says one of the men</i> <i> had a white T-shirt</i> <i> and the other wore a black hoodie.</i> - I need you to get on your page and show us that VIP page, and we're gonna try and find them flashing that money. OK? OK. <i> ♪ </i> <i> [tense music]</i> - Really? The guy right there? <i> ♪ </i> This is just a few hours before the party. <i> ♪ </i> - Now we have a motive. <i> ♪ </i> <i> [indistinct rapping]</i> - Looks like someone's posted a video of the party a couple of hours ago. <i> ♪ </i> And there's your female witness rapping with everyone, just like she said. <i> ♪ </i> - And there's Cedrick right there, sitting on the bed. - There it comes. [indistinct conversation] - OK, so they've got this Facebook group called VIP. Earlier in the day, the victim was flipping through $16,000 in cash. So now we have a reason why somebody would want to go over there. <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> - Maybe there's something on these phones. <i> narrator: The team searches through text messages</i> <i> on the phones recovered at the scene</i> <i> to try and identify who they belong to.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - Hey, look at this. <i> ♪ </i> Sarge, right here. <i> ♪ </i> - "I'm out here. Is the money there?" <i> ♪ </i> - "You still getting this money?" - Somebody set them up to be robbed. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: In a text from earlier that night...</i> - "I'm doing my hair"-- she was talking about doing her hair during the interview. <i> narrator: The phone belongs to the woman</i> <i> they interviewed earlier.</i> - And she's [bleep] gone. Paul-264 to the officer that transported the girl from Detective Division. <i> [suspenseful music]</i> Have you already gotten rid of her? <i> - Yeah.</i> - [bleep]. <i> ♪ </i> Just go get her. - OK. [sirens wailing] <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: Two hours later...</i> <i> [dramatic music]</i> - Sorry to bring you back. <i> ♪ </i> We got some of the property back. Is this phone yours? - You sure about that? - Well, here's the deal. I'm gonna give you a chance right now to get out in front of this and work with us, or you can get yourself wrapped up right in the middle of this murder if you lie to me. - We're not gonna play with you. You get one chance at this-- one chance and one chance only. - I think you set it up. - OK, I'll read the messages. "You can be on your way now," you tell them. "I'm out here"-- that's them talking to you-- "I see it. Is the money there?" - No, you can't have the phone. Then you ask, "We still getting this money?" <i> ♪ </i> I mean, you're talking about setting this whole thing up. It's obvious. <i> ♪ </i> - If you lie to us, you're gonna more than likely get charged, just like everybody else. There's two guys that did the robbery. We got to know who those people are. <i> ♪ </i> - So the guy you're talking to here is Quincy. - Mm-hmm. - Tell me what Quincy tells you. - If you see anything or if you see any money? - OK. <i> narrator: She admits that while she was at the party,</i> <i> she spoke to Quincy on the phone.</i> - OK. Who was Quincy with? - All right, I'm gonna give you a few minutes to sit here and think about anything else that you haven't told me, OK? You got to come 100% clean, or it's not gonna work. Well, it's getting better. <i> narrator: Baumann looks up the phone number</i> <i> associated with Quincy.</i> <i> [tense music]</i> - Roderick Whiteside. <i> narrator: It's registered to 25-year-old</i> <i> Roderick Whiteside.</i> <i> He has prior convictions for firearm possession</i> <i> and driving under suspension.</i> - Get me a big picture of him. - Yeah. <i> ♪ </i> - Do the right thing here. <i> [dramatic music]</i> - OK, who's that? - That's Quincy? OK. Does Quincy have access to this VIP page? - Where's Quincy live? - OK, you're telling me the truth? - All right. <i> ♪ </i> Roderick Whiteside. - Did she give you anything on the other guy at all? - No. We'll just have to get Whiteside and see if he wants to give him up. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: The team hits the streets</i> <i> with the warrant squad, searching locations</i> <i> where Whiteside is known to hang out.</i> - I'm gonna work from the north to the south if somebody wants to go south to north. <i> - Yeah.</i> <i> [suspenseful music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> [knocking at door] <i> - Code six, 105 North Avenue.</i> - If you see Roderick, just call my cell phone. <i> ♪ </i> - [bleep]. A lot of these guys, they don't have one place to rest their head. They just jump from place to place just for this reason, so that they're difficult to find. <i> narrator: While the warrant squad continues the search...</i> <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> Ritter and the team return to Homicide.</i> - There's your video. <i> narrator: The surveillance video from the hotel</i> <i> has finally come in.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - Is that from the stairwell? - Yep. <i> ♪ </i> <i> ♪ </i> There she is. <i> narrator: Moments after Cedrick arrives,</i> <i> the female witness is in the parking lot</i> <i> on her cell phone.</i> - She probably had no idea this was gonna turn into a murder. <i> ♪ </i> - Hold on. <i> narrator: Ten minutes before the shooting...</i> - The guy in the white shirt. All right. - It could be them. - White shirt, a hoodie... <i> ♪ </i> There they are. <i> ♪ </i> <i> [somber music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> - There you go. <i> ♪ </i> - Whiteside. - Look at that. That's him. <i> ♪ </i> - He's got a bandana around his neck. Just trying to figure out this second guy. <i> ♪ </i> - Oh! Come on. - They're out there fighting with the victim. - This must be when Cedrick gets shot. <i> ♪ </i> - Yeah, here we go. - Back it up. Freeze it. See the gun? - Yes. - He's robbing the guy. Both of them had guns. <i> ♪ </i> - You're gonna be able to see 'em run over there and hide those guns. - Yeah. - Where were the guns at? - No, no... - They were underneath that bush. <i> ♪ </i> - Holy--dude. - Oh, wow. <i> narrator: The second suspect in the hoodie</i> <i> throws something in the bushes</i> <i> where the 9-millimeter was found.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - We've got other cameras that we can look at. <i> ♪ </i> - Yeah. - This is before the shooting. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: Minutes before the murder,</i> <i> they spot Roderick Whiteside</i> <i> getting out of an SUV.</i> - Ooh, they just got in the hood, didn't they? - Let's back it up. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: Whiteside takes something from under the hood.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - They're getting out right now. <i> ♪ </i> - Ooh! - Hey. <i> narrator: Then a third man</i> <i> gets out of the suspect's vehicle.</i> - Son of a bitch. Everybody says only two went in. Maybe he never went in the room. - Do you think... [sighs] - Try those other camera views. <i> [suspenseful music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> Here's number three. - Number three doesn't go up. <i> narrator: Suspect number three</i> <i> stays downstairs during the attempted robbery.</i> <i> narrator: The lookout takes off</i> <i> moments before the shooting.</i> - There he goes! He's jumping the fence! He's getting the hell out of there. He didn't want to be a part of it. - Yeah. <i> [dramatic music]</i> - Video's huge in this deal. We still got to identify the second suspect, though. There's a third suspect on the video that's acting more like a lookout than anything. We need to figure out who he is, since he took off prior to the shooting; I think that he's the most likely guy to talk. <i> ♪ </i> We've been going on this since about 2:00 this morning, so I'm gonna go home right now and get some rest. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: Detectives Ronnie Leatherman and John Brown</i> <i> go to update Cedrick's family.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> They've already been notified about the murder.</i> - We're Homicide Unit--Ronnie. - Ronnie. - John. - I'm sorry for your loss. <i> [solemn music]</i> - Question. - Yes? - Y'all got anybody in custody? - They have some names that we're looking for, but nobody's officially been arrested yet. - Man, there's just a whole bunch of [bleep] going on. I lost my mama, I lost my auntie, my papa-- I lost my brother. <i> ♪ </i> It's just so shocking to me. <i> narrator: Cedrick's sister tells detectives</i> <i> she has lost four relatives</i> <i> in just three years.</i> - Hopefully we get some answers. - Yeah, we'll be hollering at you soon. - Somebody gonna have to say something. <i> ♪ </i> - It's always tough for us whenever we go talk to the families, and we don't have the answers for 'em, because they're going through so much right now anyway, and it just makes it even tougher for them. Cedrick was flashing $16,000 on Facebook, so that could very easily be the cause of this. And it looks like maybe he just got taken advantage of. <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: The next day...</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> While the search for Whiteside continues...</i> - This [bleep] going nowhere. <i> ♪ </i> <i> [line ringing]</i> - What's going on, girl? <i> narrator: Ritter decides to reach out to the woman</i> <i> who was at the party.</i> - Did Roderick try and contact you? - Do you have any idea where he would be? - OK. <i> ♪ </i> <i> ♪ </i> - Who is it? <i> ♪ </i> - "So Hood"? - How did you know that So Hood is the other guy? <i> narrator: The witness says she knows So Hood</i> <i> through Whiteside.</i> - OK. If you think of anything else, call me, and I'll be in touch, OK? - All right, hang in there. <i> ♪ </i> So Hood. All right. - So Hood. <i> ♪ </i> There he is. - Cool. Dude, I think that is him. <i> ♪ </i> - I'm gonna go look up So Hood. - This is possibly the unknown, taller suspect that goes up to the landing. What? - Think you got him? - OK. - Claude Calvin, huh? <i> narrator: 23-year-old Claude Calvin</i> <i> has nine prior convictions,</i> <i> including burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle,</i> <i> and possession of a controlled substance.</i> - Judging by where the gun's found, Claude is gonna be the shooter. <i> narrator: Detectives believe Claude Calvin</i> <i> is the one who hid the possible murder weapon.</i> - Our witness thinks the second suspect is So Hood, and Claude Calvin goes by that nickname. That's not enough to arrest him for murder. We're gonna get his phone records, and we'll compare 'em to Whiteside's-- see if they were together that night. For now, he's just a person of interest. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: As the clock winds down,</i> <i> Tulsa Homicide is still on the hunt</i> <i> for their suspects.</i> <i> ♪ </i> [ticking] <i> In the first 48,</i> <i> Tulsa Homicide responded to the murder</i> <i> of 27-year-old Cedrick Gilmer,</i> <i> shot at a hotel party,</i> <i> discovered three men</i> <i> may have been involved in the murder,</i> <i> learned the names of two of the suspects,</i> <i> Roderick Whiteside and Claude Calvin,</i> <i> and are waiting on phone records</i> <i> to confirm their whereabouts</i> <i> the night of the murder.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> [phone ringing]</i> <i> Five days later...</i> [phone ringing] - Hello? <i> narrator: Ritter gets a call from Crime Stoppers...</i> - Good stuff. <i> narrator: With a possible name for the lookout.</i> - All right, cool. Thanks, man. Bye. <i> ♪ </i> - Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh! <i> [suspenseful music]</i> - What do you think? - 6-foot, 280. He's a big dude. <i> - That guy is big.</i> - He's spittin' image of the guy on video. - Yeah, that's your boy, right there. - All right. <i> ♪ </i> - We need to run his phone too, to see if he was with Claude and Whiteside. The records will be key to tying 'em all together and putting 'em in the same location. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: Several weeks later...</i> - 2:28... <i> narrator: The phone records are in.</i> - Let's see. At midnight-30... <i> ♪ </i> Booyah. There he is. <i> narrator: The records place Calvin and the lookout</i> <i> with Whiteside at the time of the murder.</i> - That's good [bleep]. Now walk that, pack it through, and get warrants issued on those two guys. <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: Over the next several weeks...</i> [knocking on door] - Tulsa police! <i> narrator: The team combs the city</i> <i> for all three suspects.</i> [siren wailing] <i> And their hard work</i> <i> finally pays off.</i> <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> - He's been real quiet on the way here. - He's just quiet, huh? <i> narrator: The warrants squad found the lookout</i> <i> at his girlfriend's house.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> - The guy on video acting as the lookout--</i> he doesn't even really appear that he wants to be there. He seems real nervous. And he leaves before the shooting, so he's possibly gonna be our best bet to get one of the three to talk. <i> He's just battling with,</i> <i> "Do I want to admit that I was there?"</i> <i> ♪ </i> - What's up, buddy? All right. I mean, I know you know what this is about. - OK. I've got your phone records. They all show that you were at the scene before it was committed. You're on video. - The guy that's throwing a freakin' "kick-back" party, just wants to socialize, gets dragged out of his hotel room, gets shot and [bleep] murdered there. You, on the other hand, leave before that happens. So you have an opportunity to help yourself. - I can tell the district attorney, "Hey, this is what he knows." <i> ♪ </i> I don't know if this'll make you feel better. Look at me. I just texted him. And he's gonna come over here and sit down with us. - No, it's the-- [cell phone buzzes] <i> ♪ </i> - Be right back. <i> ♪ </i> [indistinct conversation] <i> ♪ </i> - Man, he's a freakin' district attorney, OK? - Just so you know, here's my little Tulsa County badge. Erik Grayless, District Attorney. - Well, what I think you want to do, as I see you sitting there, is that you want to come clean. - We filed the charge as murder. We take into account every single statement that everybody makes when we make our ultimate decision. We can't make promises, but one thing I can promise you is that telling the truth is the only way-- is the best way out of any of this. <i> [somber music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: He says Roderick Whiteside</i> <i> asked him if he wanted to go the party</i> <i> to meet some girls.</i> <i> narrator: He says Whiteside pulled out a gun</i> <i> and told him to follow him and Claude Calvin</i> <i> up to the party.</i> - 'Cause they were trying to talk you into it, and you were telling 'em no. <i> narrator: He says after the shooting,</i> <i> Whiteside called him.</i> - Did he tell you he shot him? - Did he say Claude did? - Which is gonna be the only guy that was with him, which is Claude. You don't know where Claude is? - You did the right thing. - He's gonna look over everything that you told us, and I appreciate you coming with it, OK? All right, hang on just a second. That worked. Man, I think he's telling the truth. - Everything he said they did matches up. <i> - For now, he's gonna be taken to jail.</i> Him cooperating is, you know, the smartest decision he's made at this point. <i> ♪ </i> <i> He's put himself in the best position</i> <i> that he possibly could.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: Three weeks later...</i> <i> the alleged shooter, Claude Calvin,</i> <i> is arrested in Oklahoma City.</i> - I've got his phone records putting him there. I've got him on video. <i> Just from watching the video,</i> <i> I think it's possible</i> <i> that he's the actual shooter.</i> So I want him to at least admit that he was there. <i> We'll see what happens.</i> <i> ♪ </i> - You know why you got arrested in Oklahoma City and why you're here now? - Mm-hmm. - You don't know nothing about nothing? <i> ♪ </i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> - Would've been nice if he talked,</i> but we got his phone records there. I've got him on video, so... Whatever. Let's roll, So Hood. <i> [dramatic music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: One week later...</i> - Look at him. He's like, "I knew this day was coming." <i> narrator: Ritter finally gets Roderick Whiteside</i> <i> in the interrogation room.</i> <i> - New at noon: one of Tulsa police's most wanted suspects</i> <i> is now behind bars.</i> <i> U.S. Marshals in Chicago arrested this man,</i> <i> Roderick Whiteside.</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> - He's on video holding a gun</i> <i> as he goes down the stairwell from the room,</i> but I don't think he pulled the trigger. I think Claude Calvin pulled the trigger. So if Roderick's smart, he'll talk to me. <i> ♪ </i> [door clicks open] All right, man. Do you know who Cedrick Gilmer is? - Mm-hmm. - OK. You're on video holding the gun, but who's the guy that actually killed Cedrick Gilmer? <i> ♪ </i> There's only two of you up on that balcony: you and Claude. - Y'all been putting it on me. - Yeah, you're arrested for murder because you were there. <i> ♪ </i> I'm telling you, you need to tell me the truth. <i> ♪ </i> - I didn't kill the man. - I know you didn't. - Eventually, this is gonna go to court, and it's gonna go to a jury. Do you want this to be put out there without your explanation? - To your benefit, the thing that's gonna help you is if you tell me the truth. - Y'all, I really finna answer my questions with a lawyer, man. - Did you say you want to have a lawyer with you when you talk? - Rather have him with me-- - OK. - When I answer you guys' questions. - All right. Hang tight. <i> If he came clean and said,</i> "Yeah, we were trying to do a robbery; Claude ran up there and shot and killed the guy," they're probably gonna go after Claude harder on the murder charge, and maybe he'll get less time, but he doesn't understand that. <i> ♪ </i> 'Cause he's an active participant in a robbery attempt that somebody was murdered in; he's got a gun in his hand, it's still murder. <i> ♪ </i> - Let's go, man. - Let's roll, So Hood. <i> ♪ </i> It took approximately two months to get everybody arrested. The crazy thing is, is, I think that this happened because Cedrick flashed the money on Facebook. Probably just goofing around, but you get these guys that just prey on people, and they decide to try and rob somebody and end up killing 'em. <i> [solemn music]</i> <i> ♪ </i> <i> narrator: One year after Cedrick's murder...</i> - Pretty rough. <i> ♪ </i> I really miss him very much, and I hope I get to see him another day. - This is a picture. He, um-- he thought he was really cool. He likes to get his beard designed and stuff. He was just so full of joy. This was his very last picture before he died. - Sometime my youngest son, he'll just start crying out of nowhere. And then he'll just point to that picture. And I'll be like, "I miss him too." - My niece and nephews, like-- how they gonna feel, like, growing up without their dad? <i> ♪ </i> You keep just spinning.
