dominance in Formula 1 has always been a problem we all dream of a thrilling race on Sunday with all 20 drivers fighting for the win and more overtakes than we can keep track of but realistically most weekends we just get maen wippen the Australian gra Prix Max V stappen put his name up in lights once again Max v stappen a three time Champion Max ven eat sleep win repeat and it seems like Max's is something we've never seen before so of course I did my research into previous decades to compare I had to make sure especially after all your comments on my Red Bull video I saw you guys hating on me for apparently being a Hamilton fan and hating Max and Red Bull both aren't true by the way one of my closest friends who actually helps me write these videos is Dutch and of course a big fappen fan or at least he was I remember him sending me videos from the Abu daab Final in 2021 I'd never heard him this happy but nowadays I don't think he even watches the grand PR weekends anymore and to be honest I don't blame him it's like a movie you know the ending of already back to the story of course we all know dominance has been in issue in F1 for decades but after comparing them to each other seeing their true impact and discovering details everyone seems to have forgotten I knew I had to make this video and I'd love to hear which one you truly think was the worst after having all the facts I think you might change your mind as I said we've all been here before sort of we've had m Claren Williams Ferrari Red Bull and Mercedes dominate in the past but when you think of it it's amazing how close the teams actually were in terms of pace besides the tires basically every other part is completely unique on each car the teams get handed a set of regulations and within a couple of months each of them makes their own car yet they're still only separated by the tiniest of margins but it definitely doesn't feel that way especially when the leader finishes with a 10 20 30 or more second lead but the question we're here to answer is who did it best which team and which drivers had it the easiest and how did they compare to Red Bull and Max let's take a look at all the best or should that be worst period of dominance in F1 I want to quickly touch on the early days of the F1 world championship so you don't think I'm just forgetting about it but when I say quickly I mean it because there wasn't much dominance back then at all the fans really didn't know how well they had it this was down to a few reasons including the huge driver and team changes from year to year teams in engine suppliers coming in and out of the sports and open Rule books but one of the main reasons was reliability or unreliability really the cars couldn't stay in one piece for more than one or two races so there was no possibility of winning race after race after race Jim Clark one of the greatest drivers ever could have easily managed four or five race wins in a row if his car wasn't constantly breaking over the course of these two decades Alfa Roma Ferrari Cooper and braam all won two driver's titles in a row but but nobody managed to improve on that the Constructor Championship was only set up in 1958 and between then and the end of the 60s Cooper and braon were the only teams that won two well Constructor titles in a row see what I mean about lack of dominance that began to change a bit in the 1970s though Lotus became the fifth team to win back-to-back Constructors titles and Ferrari won all three between 75 and 77 still the' 70s produced seven different world champions and no one driver managed to win two in a row to put that into context if we count back on our past seven world champions we get to Fernando Alonzo in 2006 a bit of quick Maths for you that's an 18year spread bit of a difference from the ' [Music] 70s when F1 entered the80s it saw its first signs of how a few big teams were going to dominate for long periods the sport got a bit more well sustainable isn't the right word seeing as they were mixing up God knows what for fuel and using engines fit only for a few lapsing W the teams were investing more sticking around for longer and the cars got slightly more reliable after Frank Williams and Patrick had set up Williams in 77 the Williams team found success pretty quickly and won the first two Constructors titles of the80s then Ferrari won the next two then McLaren took the two after that and then Williams got their third and fourth but this level of dominance was incredibly minor compared to what was about to come in this era there were still other teams snatching wins for example during the 1986 season Williams snatched nine wins closely followed by McLaren with four and some of you might remember this was also the legendary year Aon Center truly started to raise eyebrows winning his third and fourth race at the will of the lotus 98t so when wck watches reached out to me a few days ago mentioned their latest Masterpiece was made with original parts from this specific car chassis 4 to be exact and that they wanted to help support the channel I started to believe in destiny as much as riken and fans back in 200 7 reenan came so close in 2003 and 2005 and he does it in 2007 now let me show you exactly how they did this in collaboration with classic team Lotus they reforged the original aluminium plenum tubes from the car to form the outer chapter rings of course this collection is limited it's not like there are hundreds of these cars available there's literally only one and you could own a piece of it if you're able to get your hands on one of the 989 that producing in which are all individually numbered by the way now as if having the goat drive this car wasn't enough there's actually more to it the 98t chassis 4 is widely regarded as the ultimate F1 turbo car due to the massive power output in qu trim and was also the very last black and gold John player special livered car in F1 they've been working on the design of this time piece for nearly 2 years yeah just on the design alone the case construction is incredibly Sleek despite the chronograph complication due to the glass box design across the watch you'll find many design references from the car perhaps most notably the black and gold color tones the large 12 on the rotor and the movement back plate decoration resembling the Renault ef-1 15b engine this time piece is Swiss made and powered by an in-house developed vertically operated chronograph movement with a 62h hour power Reserve now listen I'm not sure how familiar you are with watches but having lived in Switzerland myself I know how incredibly hard it is to break into the Swiss made industry and don't even get me started on in-house movements if you want to know more about wreck and benefit from a 20% discount on pre-orders check out the link in the description of this video and thank you once again to wreck watches for supporting the channel so between 1980 and the end of ' 87 The Big Three had taken eight Constructor titles but the first signs of real dominance only pop up when you look at the drivers by the start of 84 McLaren had already won two drivers championships with fitti paly and Hunt but it was about to get much much worse in the mid 80s they won the driver's title in 84 85 and 86 with louder and Prost the first time a team won three in a row in F1 history Williams took 87 with PK but McLaren quickly bounced back with Senate and Prost and won the next four in a row making it seven in 8 years so let's break down just how dominant they really were for a start they won exactly 50% of the races in those 8 years 64 of 128 but they had a decent amount of competition from other teams through most of that time mainly from Williams who won 26.5 6% of the races in the same period Ferrari were winning some races too but weren't as much of a threat but that would soon change however McLaren's best season came in 1988 winning 15 of the 16 races this broke the record at the time for the highest win percentage over a single year working out at a whopping 93.8% of the rate RIS this still sits is the second highest ever and was beaten last year by Red Bull's absolutely ridiculous season when in 21 of 22 races that's 95.5% but to be fair even in the McLaren days the fans had a choice of who to cheer on for the win there was Prost louder and Senna who all tallied up all of those victories over the dominant years even in 8 it wasn't one-sided as the 15 wins were split between proos and Senna and then you had PK and Mansel taking wins for Williams so the race has still had their fair share of unpredictability making them exciting to watch to zoom in on the 88 season for just another moment the main reason that McLaren were successful was because they partnered with Honda that year to power their cars the Japanese engines a small 1.5 L V6 turbo turned out to be the best on the grid by a mile and the mp44 was pretty much Untouchable this didn't exactly please Franken his Williams crew who were left with a pretty slow Jud engine oh and it helped that McLaren had two of the best drivers on the grid piloting their cars too Williams jumped shipped to Renault engines in '89 after just one season and was back to being competitive again now Williams decided it was their turn to shine and won five of the next six Constructors titles bennetton burst their bubble in 95 though yes Michael Schumaker takes the lead in The Grand Prix of Europe and the Benetton team go buter with delight but it was by far the most successful period in the British team's history taking the top spot in '92 93 94 96 and 97 they won four of the drivers titles in this period too but we all love this era cuz we're talking about four different drivers becoming world champions here and that's the major difference between their success and the Domination by Red Bull recently Mansel Prost Hill and V nerve winning titles in the blue and white cars proved that it was a combination of the teams and driver that was strong and not just one of the two and yeah Frank might have had a thing for firing drivers right after they won but it made it so much more interesting for us but again Williams didn't have any years in this period where they completely whitewashed the field okay that's being a bit harsh because they came pretty damn close on a few occasions producing some crazily fast and technically Advanced cars for example the fw14b was one of the fastest F1 cars ever made in terms of Delta to other cars and in '92 they won 10 out of the 16 races then they did the exact same in '93 and they had their best year in '96 winning 12 of the 16 remember though the key Point here is that different drivers were winning and they had other teams and drivers right on their heels genuinely outpacing them here and there every season so competition wise the fans were happy and the sport was in good order all through the decade but the same can't be said for what was around the corner F1 didn't know what was lurking in the shadows at this point nobody did maybe not even Ferrari they would have hoped and prayed for it but at the dawn of the 21st century they started to do the unthinkable simply put they broke just about every record in F1 history on both the constructors and driver side with Michael schumacker at the wheel they won the Constructors Championship every year from 1999 to 2004 and every driver's title from 2000 to 2004 the T fory must have thought they were dreaming after seeing their team destroy everyone for 5 years straight Schumaker probably didn't though because he was a big driving force behind this success along with the two big dogs Jean Todd and Ross brw they schemed and plotted this brutal takeover with Michael since signing him for the 96 season and after a few tough years it all took shape but they had a couple of important things that helped them succeed in their mission the lack of a budget cap in those days paired with the seemingly unlimited funding from Marinello helped the lack of rules around private testing paired with Ferrari having their own private test track helped too this meant that Schumaker would spend three three or 4 days a week at fiorano pounding in around 100 laps a day in his F1 car getting all the info they could possibly need and more teams can't do this now it actually makes Mercedes and Red Bull success even more impressive as they're mainly relying on simulations to do the work for them it's a strange way to build a car but they have no choice either way Ferrari dominated it was most obvious in 2002 when they won 15 out of the 17 races putting them third on the alltime list for the highest percentage of wins they weren't half bad in 2004 either winning 15 of the 18 races I'm not going to lie though this period was pretty dull scratch that extremely dope everyone was here in the German and Italian national anthems when they closed their eyes at night and it didn't do much good for the popularity of the sport but like all good things it came to an end in 2005 and the t4c have been searching for that same feeling of Elation ever since I truly feel for you to be honest but you know what they say maybe next year right after a shockingly sighting period between 06 and 09 another Beatdown took place between 2010 and 2013 with Red Bull winning both championships 4 years in a row Sebastian vettle took the newly designed Rena powered machines to their Max and clinched his four titles in a row but there were really only 2 years in that period where he had an outrageously fast car the rb7 of 2011 must have felt like heaven and it was virtually Untouchable of every red bull ever yeah including 2023 is rb19 the rb7 had the best average in terms of single lap race Pace the career round was the only one in the entire year where it didn't set the fastest lap of the weekend wild 2010's rb10 was solid too when in nine races but it wasn't put you to sleep on a Sunday solid plus it and 2012 were two of the finest seasons in memory most thanks to alonso's Magic which somewhat saved this era from being a complete write off in terms of fan interest and with what happened next it's a Pity that it didn't last a bit longer their four years in the spotlight must have stirred something up in the Mercedes headquarters that made them push extra hard because when the regulations changed in 2014 bringing in the V6 Turbo Hybrid the Silver Arrows were in A League of Their Own I mean when watching a Grand Prix you think that anyone in the race who wasn't Hamilton or rusber was driving an F2 car it was really that bad they pushed really hard in the Years leading up to 2014 to get these hybrid engines brought in and that's because they were already developing them before the new regs even got finalized so by the time they did team Toto were on another planet and their Bonkers budget helped too who else has ever spent over $510 million developing one Formula 1 car and oh yeah over $150 million of that was on the engine alone just think about that for a second that's way more than the entire budget cap for an entire season at the minute just on the engine speaking of way more there's way more I could talk about here so let me know if you'd like to see a full video on this anyway this crazy Advantage continued all the way through 2020 and they had some real standout cars during that time the F1 W5 hybrid their first attempt at the new regs in 2014 that they threw all their efforts at took 16 wins and 18 polls in 19 races and disappointingly for their Rivals and for us the W6 in 2015 picked up the exact same number of wins in polls 2 it didn't stop there because the W7 from 2016 took 19 wins and 20 polls in 21 races and if lwis and Nico didn't take each other out in Barcelona it likely would have made that number even more insane I mean winning 90.5% of the races that year was insane but it's still behind redbulls 2023 stats so by the end of 2020 F1 fans had well and truly sat through the most dominant spell in the history of the series let's not lie it was terrible the one Saving Grace was the one and only the man who beat Lewis in equal Machinery but when he packed his bags out of nowhere and botas took his seat Lewis could basically lie back and put his feet up for 4 years straight he wiped the floor with botas and even in races when valter was beating Lewis we got Val James so you need to let Lewis B into turn 13 this L I never want to see those races ever again it wasn't always Dreadful though because Ferrari and vettle did challenge Lewis in 17 and 18 but ran out of steam halfway through the year I don't want to mention hackenheim 2018 but well that was kind of a turning point too but there's no denying that Mercedes absolutely nailed it the advantage they started with in 2014 just kept carrying over year after year until they were controversy alerts disadvantaged in 2021 by a rule change which brings me to the next [Music] team it seems like everyone in the entire world has now heard of Max V stappen even people who have never watched an F1 race and probably never intend to have heard of him he's transcended the Motorsport fan base in a way that no other driver ever has and it's for good reason the Williams McLaren Ferrari or Mercedes periods of domination don't come close to what the Austrian energy drink team has managed to accomplish in the past two years and counting when the merry-go round of Regulation changes came to a stop and landed on ground effect cards everyone in the F1 world looked to see which horse one man was sitting on and that man was Adrien Nei now Nei wasn't the only reason for their success obviously but he sure is a pretty big one his knowledge of ground effect is mindblowing and he put it to good use in 2022 the rb- 18 won 17 out of 22 races equaling 77% that year but he put his know how to even better use in 2023 when the rb19 won 21 out of 22 races 95.5% of the entire season it's no exaggeration to say that 2023 was unlike any other F1 season we were left scratching our heads trying to remember a more one-sided season but the reality is there never was one especially when it was Max doing all the winning I mean if czecho had won a few more it might have been a bit more entertaining everyone loves a good intro Team Battle right but no Max just broke countless records including the one he already held for most race wins in his season increasing his 15 from 22 to 19 in 23 most consecutive wins with 10 in a row most points in a single season by a driver the list just goes on and on as I mentioned the advantage that Mercedes had in 201 14 carried forward for many years and it looks like the same is going to happen now certainly until the end of 2025 anyway before the new regs land in 26 rule Changers have a tendency to shake things up but they also give teams a chance to gain a huge advantage over Rivals which is what has led to the past three periods of domination 2021 saw convergence when the regs got older it genuinely took Red Bull 7 years to catch up to Mercedes it's just a part of Motorsport really and as long as teams have to produce a unique car every year there's always going to be someone who does it better than the others but it shouldn't have to be to this extent and yeah they don't make brand new cars every year but just look at the world Insurance Championship even without their balance of performance there wouldn't be one team miles ahead of the rest Indie car's the same the teams are just closer and this series does more to make it exciting an F1 doesn't help itself it's a turnoff to see the same person win every weekend in any sport it doesn't matter how much you support them and it's the same story here unfortunately we're living through a bad patch of it at the moment and in my opinion the worst one that the sport has ever experienced in terms of pure dominance and who knows how long it will last I don't care if Red Bull keep winning but let's hope it gets a lot tighter at the front of the grid we need it and F1 needs it even though constant rule changes look like a potentially quick solution I think they end up making matters worse in the long run but a way of fighting it would be to open up more parts of the rule book so that teams can focus their strengths on certain areas use their mighty engineer brains and come up with something outside of the box I just made a video on the craziness of F1 in the70s and back then they had six wheeled cars loads of different design ideas and plenty of engine suppliers and the competition was never more exciting or hear me out how about this for a quick and easy solution let a second tire manufacturer join and have another allout tire wall because at the moment teams are tied to finding ridiculously small gains in the areas they're told they can work with and in my opinion that's not what makes Motorsports exciting imagine every weekend teams will bring in new wild and wonderful upgrades and parts to their cars I think we'd be on the edge of our seats with excitement and no I didn't forget about the budget cap they just have to reprioritize spend less money on catering or something but I'm not employed by the FIA or formula one just yet so I probably shouldn't give away all my brilliant ideas for free but there's so much more to Red Bull's recent dominance than meets the eye and it's having drastic consequences on our sport I actually broke down all the reasons why they're so far ahead head from infrastructure drivers and regulations to some of the much lesser known aspects so if that sounds interesting because it is then click
