[Music] [Applause] [Music] it's a very chilly morning here in san marcos texas 25 degrees fahrenheit and it is 6 40 in the morning and i am getting ready to yet again embark on a day-long cross-country from san marcos texas to the east coast specifically going to daytona beach today but this time the airplane is going to look very different on the trip back i'm josh a pilot and flight instructor who loves the sky sharing it with those around me and using it to see the world from a new perspective flying can seem super complex but i make it my mission to promote safe practices while enjoying the beauty this world has to offer subscribe to climb into the cockpit on future adventures this is aviation 101. [Music] we start the story in las vegas departing on a plane bound for my hometown of austin texas which is where skyhawk80991 is hangar [Music] after a couple of days in austin prepping and packing i loaded up the truck and drove to the hangar for a pre-sunrise departure [Music] [Music] hmm that's a glorious smell on an icy morning last time i went to daytona beach it was to get that long pipe put on underneath the plane but this time the airplane is going to look very different on the trip back i've got 885 nautical miles to fly today so my first leg is going to be to tango 78 i'm not totally topped off i've got 31 gallons that's plenty to get out here and there's cheap gas and liberty and i always always always check nodums before going so it looks like there's some sid nodems terminal procedure nodums i'm just making sure there are no runway or airport closures and no fuel pump outages because if i'm stopping there for fuel i don't want to get there and realize they don't have fuel so these are the flying eyes otis one of the ophthalmic frames they just came out with normally i wear contacts when i fly and i wear a pair of sunglasses on a long day like this sometimes like by the end of the day my eyes are just fatigued and contacts kind of make that worse and the best part about these glasses is they have magnetic clip-ons that convert right to sunglasses so i'm going to be wearing these off phonics which is going to be nice because i'm departing in the dark and i don't know my eyes just do i don't know if they actually do better my eyes just feel more comfortable without contacts in the dark all right it's time to get going we're after 6 45 i'm going to pull the plane out shut the doors fired up and uh hopefully be off the ground here in about 10 or 15 minutes i love cross countries i love going places ever since i was a kid travel and and just going someplace new going someplace where something unexpected is gonna happen i always just associate early mornings and traveling in airports with nothing but good feelings and nothing but excitement and wanting to know what's on and beyond the horizontal aircraft time one two zero zero zulu san marcos towers resuming class delta services runway three one is in use wind three one zero at four altimeter three zero three four good morning austin approach skyhawk november eight zero niner niner one vfr request or eight zero nine nine one therefore skyhawk eight zero nine or niner one cessna 172 just off san marcos we're vfr to tango 78 like to pick up flight falling four six six four on the squat no matter what sky igniter wanting radar contact 10 miles northeast of san marcos off now temperatures 3033 30339 goodness what a beautiful morning it's just calm crystal clear atmosphere [Music] houston approach skyhawk eight zero niner one seven thousand five hundred eight zero nine nine one used maintain vfr college station altimeter three zero three five three zero three five maintain vfr not another one we're talking to houston approach now we're at 7 500. so approaching the houston bravo i think they're gonna either ask me to go around it or go under it i'm kind of doubting they're going to clear me into the bravo be really nice if they just cleared me into the bravo and let me go straight through unlikely one 0-9-9-1 zero seven zero vector around the arrival corridor heading zero seven zero nine another one well maybe they are gonna vector me through the bravo got a low level temperature inversion and it's in the 20s there's like 25 fahrenheit on the ground but it's 46 fahrenheit up here yeah brennam is minus three celsius on the ground and it's seven celsius up here that's the town of brennam where we found this airplane sitting on the ramp with a for sale sign in the windshield november eight zero niner niner one change to my frequency one one niner point seven nineteen seven nine nine one eight zero nine nine one up thank you houston altimeter three zero three eight split into the bravo air space for your radar vectors flying president three zero three eight indicating seven thousand five hundred cleared into the bravo heading zero seven zero nine one see this is what happens if i say that yeah i think this will happen then it doesn't happen if i say no they're not going to give me vectors into the bravo they might give me vectors into the bravo but if i say oh they're definitely gonna give me vectors into the bravo they're gonna say remain clear of the class bravo always spout to the universe the opposite of what you want to happen november 764 alpha also used an approach maintain vfr call station altimeter three zero three five november eight zero niner niner one defend vfr to three thousand fly heading zero nine or zero three thousand zero nine or zero eight zero nine one uh departure gulfstream november 163 like delta checking in at uh one point four to two thousand pattern altitude is gonna be 1100 feet between five thousand field elevation is 70 above sea level probably any minute he's going to say no traffic observed between you and the airport radar services terminated squawk vfr frequency change approved and we're two zero nine one one no traffic reserve between you in the airport radar service terminates clock fifa change device approved if that was for eight zero nine number one we'll squawk vfr go to advisory thanks he said two zero nine nine one so it didn't perk my ears up and then he was saying the exact call that i just predicted so that's why i emphasize 8-0 okay we're gonna hit vfr go to 1200 and we're switching to advisory like a nice clean wide open runway i see two fuel tanks down there one of them is probably for jet a one's probably for 100 load lead so if we want to go a little faster on this next leg we'll just put jet a in i'm just kidding i know some of you are already like i'm reporting him for saying that all right pre-landing brakes pedal test they feel firm and even landing lights on autopilot useless seat belt shoulder harnesses i'm strapped in extra set for best powerful rich let's get the carb heat out fuel selector is on both and the flaps we're going to start getting them down in the wide arc pre-landing checklist complete power's coming back a little bit high liberty traffic skyhawk eight zero niner one turning final runway three four full stop liberty go flaps thirty one one thousand two one thousand three one thousand flat set thirty we've got the runway made and as soon as we start to pull this nose up we're gonna start dissipating that energy but we are not making this first taxiway put it into a little bit of a side slip there actually is a touch of wind down here my eyes are looking down at the end of the runway here comes the flare just hold it off in ground effect there's the mains liberty municipal airport liberty texas just got fuel here 3.95 a gallon which is probably going to be the best fuel price i'm going to pay on this entire trip but unfortunately it is about to go up i was actually kind of anticipating the price on four flight to be wrong and it was actually gonna be like 450 a gallon here or something like that so i've got about five hours of fuel on board i'm going to take off out of here and go to the plan right now is panama city beach florida we'll see how the winds treat me and just kind of see how i'm feeling along the way that's going to be every bit of a four-hour leg landing with four with a one-hour reserve beautiful weather just clear skies i'm gonna ride a tailwind at 11 500 feet all the way to panama city and that's going to be our next stop our next planned stop that is things can change but i'm ready to go i already hit the bathroom it's a beautiful morning so far and it's going to be a beautiful day of flying it's time to hop in the plane and go for leg two to daytona shut mixture and strobes liberty traffic skyhawk 809.1 taxing onto runway 1-6 gonna be a left turnout vfr liberty i like to finish my ctaf call well before i cross that whole short line so that anybody has a chance to speak up and say up i'm on final or whatever [Music] and we got plenty of room from those towers take off power set 2320 on the rpm temps and pressures look great we're already at 45 knots there's 50. off at 700 feet houston approached skyhawk 8-0-9-9-1 just departed liberty vfr request for eight zero nine one approach bud eight zero niner niner one cessna 172 skyhawk we're climbing through eight one thousand eight hundred feet now going up to eleven five vfr to echo charlie papa razor nine nine one houston updaters three zero four one squad seven three four two seven three four two altimeter three zero four one another one for a 991 you better contact about tomorrow's southeast of liberty airport not another one roger passing two thousand three hundred southwest 1196 research sushi one thousand to go about two minutes a little over two minutes i'm probably going to get up to 11.5 and leave it at full throttle and just pull my rpm back a little bit through doing leaning for lena peak all right reaching 11.5 i'm going to ever so gently relax the nose to let the airplane slowly build its momentum and build its energy if i just put the nose down immediately we would lose a lot of lift because i just all of a sudden reduce the angle of attack as i'm decreasing the angle of attack it's gonna require more speed to produce the same amount of lift so i'm letting this trade off happen real slowly i even blew past my altitude by about a hundred feet via the nasty one arrival transition to public speeds that was talking about three zero four zero let the rpm come up a bit start rolling the mixture back getting lean to the vienna they want to arrive we'll probably see they'll similar three zero four zero all right 65 percent horsepower we are level a little over 2500 rpm gallons per hour go on the 430 here and calculate your airspeed altitude and american 1465 96 on the air speed zero celsius and that's our heading we're truing out at 115 knots at six gallons per hour so that's three and a half hours to panama city we've got a little over five hours of fuel on board so we should be able to make it so long as nothing changes and i think our tailwind's supposed to get better straight zero november contact normal's approach on 119.3 [Music] number seven charlie popping contact dawn's approach on one three all right we're still running charlie mike here at six and a half gallons per hour lean a peak at 11 500 feet we've lost a little bit of the tailwind but we're still gonna make it to panama city uh in two and a half hours currently have four hours of fuel on board so we're gonna land with an hour and a half remaining so it is 11 a.m central time i would like to eat in an hour i'm kicking myself for not bringing more snacks my sister's homemade tortilla soup left over chimichanga oh my gosh that smells good i'm gonna heat up my food for a little while degrees to the right it's not in my way i can see over it all right i told myself i was gonna wait till noon to crack open my mexican food and it just passed dude so the real question here is do i go for the chimichanga first or do i go for the tortilla soup first i think i'm going for the soup first because actually soup usually comes out before the main entree we just appreciate how beautiful this tortilla soup looks with sweet potatoes corn beans cilantro tortilla strips at the bottom that are kind of soggy by now and this does not suck for a view for lunch about a four mile right pace runway three four cleared lane three four clear to land number two behind the citation on an hour and we'll make it short come over nine is a vector frequency change point six five left mike holds short of delta ground point six five nine another one thanks [Music] well i'm actually already getting ready to hunch out climb in the plane to a mag check and i'll be out of here but this is an incredibly busy airport one of the line guys actually showed me jake's bonanza the director of maintenance of the shop where this airplane is on its way he's got a bonanza here that has some upgrades that are just freaking amazing beautiful airplane to see really prompt service here at shelter i've always been impressed with all the shelters i've been to and they are hopping got jets everywhere and they say this is a typical weekend and all these jets are firing up and leaving king airs and whatnot so there's another king air firing up over there they're throwing a jet in there there's all these jets behind me here and i'm on the in one of the three piston rows here so i'm going to do a quick pre-flight sump the tanks always sum the tanks and check for debris i can actually already see that one of the fuel caps are not totally on up there it's crooked and it's not supposed to be like that that means they didn't screw it down all the way so i'm gonna check for some debris check that they did get the tanks all the way to the top check oil all that kind of stuff then i'll be out of here do a quick run-up and a mag check and then try to stay out of everybody's way and get out of here as efficiently as possible panama city beach florida definitely one of the busiest airports i've our been oscar 18530 observation when variable at three visibility in a couple minutes if our decent approve i don't know if that meant that was like a hint that he wanted me to get it started now we're pretty much on schedule to start it right about now but i wanted to let him know that i'm planning on starting it here in a couple minutes i'm gonna go ahead and unplug the ipad and the usb charger go ahead and stow it because we are done for the day we'll be getting a set and execute the descent checklist once we start now and i'm going to set the heading bug or the altitude bug to 1000 feet that's pattern altitude daytona beach international airport is featuring garmin new wiring new yolks new seats new flooring and a lot of other little upgrades and features that are going to make this thing feel like a new airplane i'll be in daytona beach for two
