i'm standing in front of the brand new 2022 cessna 182. a lot of twos but an awesome airplane and derrick moore from textron aviation is here to tell me more about this airplane let me demo fly it and explain exactly why this is the best 182 they've ever made so stick around think you're gonna like what you see [Music] so derek tell me a little bit about the average mission profile of the 182 what is it uniquely built to do yeah the 182 does so many things very well from four people with bags on a trip to you know a destination it's great for that you can also put it into a grass strip a short field and it can keep up with traffic to land at a bigger airport it does so many different things so well that's why so many people usually pick this as a great family airplane that's why i bought the 182 behind me is that i figured if this was the first and last airplane that i ever buy it'll be able to do a little bit of everything and i don't think the 182 wins in any one category like there are other airplanes that'll go faster or carry more or whatever but i guarantee you if you rank the top five airplanes in useful load speed short field capability range things like that the 182 is probably one of the only airplanes that will be in the top five of all of those you're absolutely correct and that's why the 182 does so well for somebody's first airplane right after they've learned to fly most of the time they've learned to fly on a 172 and the 182 is just such a simple transition it's just a little bit bigger it carries more and it goes just a little bit faster it's a very very easy transition well that was my story i trained the 172 and then when you get 182 it feels like a little little bigger a little more grown up 172 with some muscles on it you're right it's a joy to fly it's really easy to fly so i would love to take a closer look at the 182 behind you so let's go over there let's do it all right so we've got the 2022 cessna 182 skyline here today and we've got a beautiful 65th anniversary retro paint scheme on the airplane to celebrate 65 years of the cessna skyline we will start at the front of the airplane where we have the three-bladed macaulay constant speed propeller what's great about the three-bladed prop is that you've got more prop clearance to the ground so should you take the 182 onto a grass strip or any kind of environment where you would want more prop clearance you have that with the three bladed prop on this airplane we have the lycoming i o 540 engine that is fuel injected it produces 230 horsepower which that equates to about 147 knots true airspeed you also have a turbocharged option on the airplane that is the tio540 engine and it produces 235 horsepower a great feature on the cowling as well is going to be your gpu port the gpu port here on the left side of the airplane you can plug the airplane in turn on the avionics load your databases you can do any kind of practice loading of flight plans and set in there for hours you literally can have this plugged in as long as you would like another great thing about the gpu plug is that if you have the kelly aerospace air conditioning installed you'll get a nice little button installed right here on the left side of the airplane that you can simply touch the ac turns on and starts to cool the cabin without you even having to get in the airplane now we're going to talk about the wing of the 182. you have a 36 foot wingspan which the wing will hold 87 gallons of fuel which is great because that equates to almost a 900 nautical mile range you're going to burn about 14 to 15 gallons per hour in the airplane and that will give you about six and a half hours of endurance all of the lights on the 182 are led from your landing lights to your nav and your beacon and your strobes they're all led which make them very efficient and bright we talked about how great the useful load is on the 182 and that brings us to the baggage compartment you'll notice that we have a very large door to get golf clubs suitcases into the baggage compartment the baggage compartment has a 200 pound weight limit you can get a lot in this baggage compartment so now we're back to the tail of the airplane which we talked earlier about the kelly aerospace ac system which is fantastic but it does eat up about 60 pounds of your useful load it's housed in the tail behind the baggage compartment which really helps when you go to flare the airplane having that 60 pounds in the back really helps really finesse the flare you'll notice here you've got a scoop for intake air to go back into the compressor on the other side of the tail you've also got a vent that's letting air out one thing that i love about flying the 182 is the electric trim you'll notice on the tail we have a really large trim tab here you also have manual trim available if you don't want to use the electric and then on the tail you've also got manual rudder trim to help offset your leg work when you enter into the cockpit of the 182 one of the first things that you'll notice is how much legroom and space that you have it's a very spacious cockpit you've got plenty of elbow room between you and the co-pilot and you've also got great ability to move the seats forward and back to allow plenty of leg room for your passengers as well the useful load on this airplane is just over 1100 pounds the 2022 skylane is equipped with the g1000 nxi you'll notice on the left screen which is going to be your pfd that's going to be your standard six-pack so you're going to have your air speed your compass your altitude and your artificial horizon right there on that screen on the right screen you're gonna have your engine instruments as well as your moving map plus a bunch of other features like charts and maps etc also new for 2022 is the gi 275 standby which you'll notice is really nice down below the two screens it's fully electric and eliminates the need for a vacuum system down in the center console you've got some convenient cup holders down here plus bins to store an ipad or a fuel sump which is really really convenient to have that right down here in between the two seats moving up you've got your nice fuel selector valve which is easily accessible followed by your cow flap handle so the cow flap is really easy to move up and down to close or open those in between that you've got your usb port so you've got usbc and usb a ports in the cockpit moving up from there you've got both of your trims that we talked about earlier so you've got your nose up and nose down trim plus your rudder trim as well now moving right to left in the cockpit you've got a nice little glove box over to your right to store anything that you would want to get out of your way to just make the cockpit just a little bit more cleaner moving to the left you've got your cabin heat and cabin air vents you've got your wing flaps which you'll notice that your first flap extension speed is 140 knots you've got your throttle quadrant with your mixture your prop your throttle all of your circuit breakers and then you have your light panel and also your instrument panel lighting as well one of our most popular features on the 182 is the kelly aerospace air conditioning the control panel is just right here to the right of the screens very very easy to use and you've got nice four big vents in the cockpit one of the new features of the cockpit of the 182 for 2022 is gonna be a new vinyl floor which is really durable and very easy to clean you've also got new design seats which include a nice suede inset that makes the seat look really really nice the panel and the cockpit are really really impressive but you really can't appreciate how much fun the 182 is until you fly it so let's go fly tell you the best thing standing out right now uh-huh air conditioning absolutely it's not even that hot outside ambient air temperatures i don't know yeah so it's not like that hot but oh my goodness sitting here on the ramp this is always the worst part of flying is sitting on the ramp and uh this feels pretty good right here and the great thing about it is that there's no limitations when you run it so as soon as the engine starts bam you don't turn off or take off you don't have to turn it up or take off come on so it's great okay next thing is going to be our flight plan so one thing i'm going to show you on the g1000 that i think is super super cool is the flight stream 510 are you familiar with flight stream 510 i am i don't have it equipped on my airplane obviously so this is really cool okay so what i have here is i have a basically a flight plan loaded of what we're going to kind of do today we're going to head up toward the llano vor so i've got tango 82 where we're at the landl vor and then the llano airport plugged into our uh foreflight here you can use this uh via foreflight or garmin pilot either one you just go after you have it linked via bluetooth which you can do that in the settings on the g1000 you'll get this little button here where it has like an airplane with two little parentheses around it you hit that you'll select send a panel and she'll ask you here one pending flight plan you'll hit enter verify that that's the same thing that you're looking at here and it is so activate are you sure yeah so now our flight plan is loaded this is cheating it is cheating but what's great about this is that if approach gives you a route that is really extensive so let's say you have you know maybe three or four vors or maybe a few airways or something along those lines you can plug all of that stuff in to your foreflight and just instantly throw it up there whereas in the older g1000 without the flight stream you would have to go into your flight plan and you're having to manually build it which can take you quite some time well not to mention you have to do it twice that's what i have to do my airplane yeah they give you reroute you got to plug it in let us start doing this thing and you gotta update for flight to say hey by the way this is what we're doing and it's just redundant this is one and done which is super great galaxy county skyline 363 charlie sierra departing runway one for north departure gillespie okay wins were one five zero so tiny rocks crosswind and just a gradual increase on the power to full you'll notice that you'll need a little bit of right rudder in there here we go all right engine's looking good okay speed's alive her speed alive notice she's already really wanting to fly yep all right i'm gonna get your flaps coming up here okay flaps up all right yeah the nice little 80 not climb out is like perfect it's so quiet so quiet even if even at full power on departure here uh really quiet on here at 3 000 feet with the cow flaps closed we're getting about 135 knots true 136 yep when i was bouncing up a little bit so what do you normally do you're planning on 135 140 no i usually plan for about 145 really yeah 145 is what we plan on of course because we're down low we're not seeing a real good true number but that's about what we're at here that's correct what we planned for all right let's demonstrate the esb the electronic stability protection what that's going to do is a lot basically it's a safety pilot it's a safety pilot in your right seat all the time so as you can see here on the pfd you've got these two double dash lines here that is basically her saying if you go beyond 45 degree bank we're going to nudge you back that's un uncommon and you'll feel her nudge you back if you continue to hold it there she will engage autopilot and bring the wings level with a zero rate of climb after 10 seconds that could save your life so yeah so we go ahead and give a nice like we're under 110 knots there's our maneuvering speed so give it a nice little left turn 45 degree bank and you'll feel her nudge you okay clear left for your left all right so all the way to 45 all the way to 45 there okay there's four do you feel there oh yeah yep coming back in just keep holding it there keep holding it just fight it keep holding it get on altitude okay good on airspeed engaging now you'll see that she went into level level mode now it just happened to be that you kept the altitude so good at 35 that she's stat 35 now but whatever altitude she would have been currently at that's what she would have captured no kidding wow it's a super cool feature it can save your life i mean you're probably going to be in autopilot in the clouds anyway but in the event that you weren't and you got disoriented it would be just a fantastic way to to make sure that you know you don't get in a compromising situation to insurance policy absolutely that's that's amazing the great thing about the 182 is the range that it has so at 87 gallon tanks and you're gonna burn 15 gallons per hour that's almost like six six hours i mean i don't know who wants to sit in a single-engine airplane for six hours without a laboratory but you know that's a long you know you're gonna have to land and stretch your legs even in my legacy 182 i tell people you're going to want to stop before the airplane wants to stop absolutely absolutely but it it really helps you as far as trip planning um you know planning your useful load you know in this airplane you have just just over 1100 pounds useful load so now you know you can you can sacrifice some fuel and really be able to like start taking a lot of stuff with you that's tremendous all right so a great a great feature of the nxi is going to be your visual approach capability and so that is a visual approach the g1000 has loaded for every airport in the g1000 system that's obviously not imc you know approved you can't fly at an imc but it's great for for any kind of you know an airport that you might not be familiar with uh parallel runways uh going into an airport at night it's just at it adds significant situational awareness so if you hit the procedure button on the d1000 select approach and now you can just scroll down you can see you have a visual 1-4 and visual 3-2 we know that the winds are favoring 1-4 so we're going to go ahead and hit visual 1 4. vectors are fine load and enter it doesn't give you obstacle clearance so it's a big big disclaimer on that so now as you can see we've got this visual approach loaded in here and it gives you the straight um the straight way point also a final approach waypoint what that is is it's an extended runway center line it also has a three degree glide path with that so that there's not like uh step downs or anything it's just a three degree line just just project it off of the runway correct that you go intercept wherever you intercept it correct we're at three thousand feet so we go intercept that um then we're probably i don't know we might be below the the uh the glide path so to speak at that point but then we'll pick it up and fly it just like an instrument approach correct so let's go ahead and arm and activate the approach so hit the uh the procedure button activate now you'll see that our little magenta line has uh now well our line our extended center line has changed over to magenta all right so you'll see you'll notice that we're coming up you can start watching your magenta uh compass there that it's gonna there it is it's starting to it's starting to catch it yeah start to intercept that okay so we were on heading mode but since we activated the approach it's changing that too that's correct we have motor approach mode yep we had the approach mode armed and so that caught that now the only thing now that we have armed that we're waiting for is the glide path which you can see the gp right at the top there now we just have to wait for that to intercept it so we're below the the three-degree glide path and so that we're going to catch it and uh come down just like you would an instrument approach exactly and here we go all right our glide path is alive so you watch that little pink diamond starts sliding down once she captures that white glide path it's going to go green and we don't have to change anything on the audio it's already already harmed the approach it's already armed so we just just manage the uh correct the power and that's it once we intercept the guide path we're going to probably take our power back to i would say about 18 inches is probably good i like to fly an approach at about 90 knots maybe 85 somewhere around in there i tell you the consistent theme on everything you've been showing me here is i keep thinking that's cheating that's cheating that's cheating like it's just exactly and they've really anticipated cockpit flow really well in this it really takes away like it's um it's really intuitive all right so you can see we just intercepted so now we can go back to about 18. and you can just give us a couple twists on the mixture now i'm going to give you your first notch of flaps here what's great about the 182 is that your first notch of flaps is the bottom of the yellow arc which is 140. that's the speed restriction wow and that's great is like we don't have to do anything the gst 700 is trimming it out it's maintaining the glide path it's maintaining you know our our heading to make sure that we're still lined up with the runway account for the wins well you can see at the runway we've got one right one red so we're good extension speed of 140 is a big deal if you're flying around in busy airspace it's very common for them to say you know best forward speed right you know until a three mile final right um so we can go you can go 20 degrees now okay 20 degrees flaps and you can pull the power back to slow her down just a little bit and what you're going to feel on the flare here is you're going to feel a heavier nose right so you just kind of autopilot which is great now you're getting a kind of nice feel for it the secret to beautifully landing a 182 is to run that electric trim right in the flare okay i'm gonna try what you said we're gonna start pulling back on the trim here in the flare there we go and greased it see i told you how about that trim now you want electric tram on your airplane don't you again cheating that's the theme of this airplane yeah you've got a nice you've got a nice 182 foundation so and i'll tell you if you can fly pretty i've like i've flown 172 182 flowing caravan a couple times um it seems like cessna just knows how to build a wing where it's real consistent it just flies really naturally they don't they don't fly wildly different than one another a 182 just flies like a bigger stronger slightly heavier 172 they all feel very similar and i they've just they just figured out how to make a consistent weighing that it's just a real joy to fly a great job thank you derek that was absolutely [Music]
