hello everybody my name is luke marr and this is hotline mode and today on hotly mode we are here to come through with a emily and para season two review now fortunately for the cast of emily in paris we are back with another review of one of netflix's most hated tv shows which happens to be unfortunate for those who are forced to hate watch because their ravenous viewers want to watch them tear every look and reference lim from lam look at all of you getting a shout out but in all seriousness i just finished the new gossip girl and while the first few episodes really dragged on in my opinion i think it turned itself around pretty well and so i'm hoping that in all seriousness emily and paris can do the same looking back on season one i think its success lies not only with the absolutely ridiculous viewpoint of a clueless american in paris but also the hideous clothing that made the on-screen americanism that much more nauseating but also unfortunately true to a certain degree the show is a brainchild of darren starr and i do think he deserves quite a bit of flack for making his lead character so unbearable although like i haven't watched sex in the city all the way through so i'm not really sure if carrie is as unbearable in that so you know who knows but i also blame all of us for participating in the sadomasochism that is binge watching the show so get your vloggers ready and let's begin now episode 1 we begin the second season with emily on a jog through paris which is a nice bit of continuity from the opening scene of the first season so here the black leggings pink running jacket and white sneakers are far more realistic than the hideous puffer coat that we saw wore flashbacks people of chicago in case you do jog with puffer coats well i'm sorry not with you but i'm sorry for you and if you don't i think you should all be a little bit more outraged i do wonder though if emily is wearing an asymmetrical top underneath her jacket because if so patricia field i see you and i respect the absolute you to everything that i hold dear i'm gonna think that that one's for me and if so i respect it now patricia field is the costume designer for emily and paris seasons one and two and is also the famous costume designer of sex in the city if you didn't already know and i will say that she is very much so a living legend but her track record got very shaky with emily in paris although she told page six when asked about if she thinks of quote the haters aka us i can't because i would get confused i can only work from my eye and from the inspiration i get from the actor which lily collins why why why why as emily heads to work she wears a look that should come with a warning this outfit contains bright flashing lights hideous proportions and the visible torturing of rib knits without that atrocious lime green faux kimono jacket with horrible gold buttons the colorful crop top knit polo and printed green and black mini skirt actually kind of works in a strange way i'm going to let christopher john rogers and chapova lawena take credit for opening my mind to that or i will let them take the downfall for opening my mind to that but if we're going to have emily dress in such loud fits they need to be somewhat simple no or at least they should be prada emily's look is being worn for a meeting with kami a good friend or well just a friend or even better a person who emily knows whose family owns a champagne brand that sevoir is trying to get as a client the issue is emily cooper slept with cammy's boyfriend gabrielle which has emily feeling under the weather as she thinks she's going to be confronted all of the real housewives which i would rather enjoy kami is meant to embody that stereotypical parisian girl vibe commonly associated with looking encryable even though she just rolled out of bed now i'm not saying that every french woman dresses like caroline de merce but this feels a bit overzealous in the baumann blazer department cami's bag happens to be pat two as well as her pants and that is currently designed by guillaume angry and this weaker basket bag that the brand developed around 60 years ago is cute and i wonder why the full look wasn't just pattoo field seems to want to channel that chemie is distraught by gabrielle's decision to stay in paris which isn't actually because of her and she uses big oversized clothing as a way to communicate that which i think does make a lot of sense but pattu currently is a great brand for channeling that omri has brought a very oversized silhouette based focus to the brand which feels like it covers what you don't want to be seen without being dowdy or conservative so why not throw her in that big black coat with frilly white collar from the brand's resort 2021 collection or that large white smock from fall 2021 you know what i mean the morning effect would have been more or less there but in something a bit chicker and let's be real emily is the disaster let's at least save cammy the trouble of being dragged down with her now julian one of the french prs that makes the show very much so bearable with his snippy and witty comments is doing a presentation for remova the german suitcase company currently owned by lvmh now i'm happy to see a remova just about anywhere even here and considering remova has in recent years been pushing itself into the luxury mainstream limelight this plotline is nice to see i will say though that the fact that nobody pronounces remova and the proper german pronunciation is a bit strange to me it's like a weird oversight i'm not saying they all had to go all old-school bavarian on us but you could just say the v instead of the w like the correct pronunciation peeps you know and i know people will say oh you're harping on this one little thing well yeah in an account meeting with clients you are hoping to secure i would think you'd probably try to pronounce the brand's name correctly even if the whole world doesn't you know what the french i will say considering this is where we are they love a proper pronunciation of their own language so i would hope that the french sitting next to the germans would be doing that now emily does come up with the idea of a remova collaboration with pierre cadeau the series his own version of the legendary designer pierre kandan as a tacky way to market the brand and of course the germans love it yeah yeah you see yes they do remova yeah yeah while i will bash quite a lot about emily in paris the use of fashion industry history moments or current affairs like collaborations or something i will always praise it's you know it keeps it bearable emily and kami both then go on to attend mindy's performance with kami in a rather cute little leather moto jacket that is paired with a curvy neckline mini dress that is either salleron or a very good knockoff which feels like the nice french chic stereotype i want to see in this world but emily of course looks like she's been wrapped in sales section sequence i get that she's going to a drag show but leave the sequins to the queens on stage because they are actually meant to look campy shocker newsflash and to make matters worse the dress was not only asymmetrical but had to have a puffed sleeve to boot towards the end of the night we can see the silver leather mewmu coat that emily wears and it's covered in embellishments and then you add in the pink prada sequin purse one at least can appreciate the dedication to such an experience to be frank though emily does certainly give off the air that she wants to be a prada or mew mew girl but hasn't been led to the promised land somehow she has the clothes but yet she still can't pull it off her clothing clashes in such ridiculous ways but if she had the right pieces aka items with beautiful artistic and historic references it would make her so much cheekier her wardrobe should be based entirely off of mutua prada's own wardrobe i mean the woman is the queen of turning the ridiculous into the sensuous and emily could learn a thing or two from her you know what i mean like a little milanese trip for an episode in season three also wouldn't hurt the plotline either the pierre cadeau and remova suitcase arrives and it's definitely true to the saying about pierre calderon putting himself on anything and everything although it was usually his name not his face emily of course is wearing graphic stripes both in rainbow and black and white because like why choose i guess when you add the white jeans and the colorful strappy sandals she looks like a background character from candyland and i think dylan lauren of dylan's candy bar better send her some pure packages to a box but for some strange reason this feels like one of the less offensive looks thus far how i don't know but as emily begins her getaway adventure with pierre cadeau in tow her graphic code has a 1960s and 1970s nature but is a rather fujo experience again i say find her some old prada if you're gonna do atrocious 1960s and 1970s wallpaper patterns at least let it have some provenance you don't even wear in france prada spring and fall 1996 would be just perfect options to riff off of emily eventually loses the jacket on board her train and we can see a mint and white striped mini dress that makes sense with her minty heels and for the very beachy weather of centro pay that's the last look of the first episode and the season is starting off quite blase even though we have had just about every color known to humankind thrown at us in under 30 minutes do with that what you will so we start the second episode with the same look from the train even with sunglasses and a scarf wrapped around emily's head though she will never come close to emulating grace kelly's simple yet striking american elegance and to catch a thief which field noted was a reference for this part of the series while kami announces she'll be joining emily and sancho pay her outfit is the very 1990s american style of overalls and bucket hat but the gold pack of a ban 69 chain mail bag that she wears is kind of fun and as of right now kami between bauman patoo long and rabban is capturing a bit of french fashion history in every look and it's making her extremely likable in my eyes mindy is still at home and in a pajama suit with feathered cups and i have to say mucha prada has a grasp on this show and i mean spring 2017. need to say more emily happens to meet gregory dupree played by playwright jeremy o'haras who is another designer saying he worked with cadeau in his ateliers and hops on top of the remova suitcase for a picture now dupree is dressed in a maximalist manner as well and between the white and green fur coat with diamond motif a la courage which is gorgeous the white terry cloth suit black loafers fisherman's hat and gold schiaparelli glasses the show's trademark aesthetic does get some credibility we should also make mention of this singular gold faux finger ring by daniel roseberry sciporelli that is just the icing on top if emily could capture these subtle little accessory moments that really endear one to the other characters the costuming might actually be all right we then see emily out and about in san tropez in a black and white graphic hat and patchwork stripe mini dress full of polka dots and florals to be honest she looks like those dolce gabbana ad campaigns when they would put a celebrity or model alongside a bunch of random townspeople in some small little italian village and to top it all off that hideous bag that looks like it has images of san pellegrino ads modge podged feels embarrassing to even look at i have a question would the basic white american going to the south of france not automatically show up to le bon marsh and pick up some jachmus and that's another issue that feels weird about the costumes of this show there isn't much styling that feels like it's trying to be experimental and chic nor does it try and tap into the current cultural landscape of style in the early 2020s i know many will say she doesn't know what she's doing she's an american in paris but the outfits always seem to want to capture this post world war ii on-screen movie star style but with a magpie eye and i don't understand who it's trying to speak to as an american who has been in paris i'm not trying to say that i'm the best dressed person in the city but like that is offensive and i know field said that she was only trying to speak to emily but to be honest emily has an iphone case in the shape of a 2014 tumblr post camera she shouldn't be spoken to ever ignored i even noticed that field pulled a solid carry brancho style reference but for a background character the whole belted button-down shirt as a dress thing couldn't have been attempted for emily between mindy's yellow yarn boots and kami's blob pantsuit it was refreshing to see julienne in that gorgeous printed suit now the suit is actually by a brand called rihanna and nina and is based on vintage prints which does julian such a service he is usually seen in out of the box suiting and this is one of the best looks he's worn yet now the ladies arrive at a party with emily in a purple sequin red valentino dress with striped frills done horizontally and it's not good but it's not the worst either but like luckily emily puts on a purple vinyl koresh jacket which hides the dress at a certain point and again french fashion history just keeps materializing with nicola de felice leading courage these vinyl jackets are becoming more and more commonplace but remember you saw it here before you saw it there now while sylvia is on screen for such a small amount of time she consistently cleans house especially in that green fringe gown and gold spiral armband emily ends the episode wearing a hi-lo ruffle dress and to be honest it's a palette cleanser so let's leave it at that and let's get on to episode 3. unless one of emily's workout outfits is truly atrocious i won't be mentioning them anymore just cause obvious reasons but speaking of atrocious the way that that beautiful embroidered blue marine sweater with the faux fur collar is paired with a striped clown pantaloon and that plaid page boy cap it's criminal what did that sweater ever do to patricia field i will say that the close-up of it does allow for those little tiny flowers made of sequins and the stems of green threads to really pop and that deserves a round of applause now while i try not to discuss plot points that don't revolve around fashion i think the hamam scenes in this episode are interesting i guess they revolve around the idea of clothing to a degree more so the lack of it rather than the abundance of it but emily is just like incredibly prudish when it comes to speaking to other women with her tops off now we americans are quite puritanical in nature just another thing to blame the pilgrims for but i found the awkward and cringy dialogue and acting around emily not wanting to greet these women kind of strange i guess to a degree it does show the true nature of many americans when confronted with european ideals of nudity but it also just makes emily so unlikable and i wonder if that is just the true extent of this show and if so just renamed the show to unlikable in paris i also just want to clarify i'm not calling her mom's european i'm just saying that in this context it's europeans in a mom france which is in europe so that's why i say european now emily's birthday look is an orange lace dress by self-portrait which is sweet and while i do wonder who thought the silk horse printed hermes jacket deserved such sloppy styling it's somewhat believable when the little white flat sandals are paired with it maybe it would have been a little bit more believable had it been worn in centro pay but i'm taking what i can get for my own sanity and then just like that my sanity is blown to smithereens because that hideous r handle bag and a highlighter green is attached to her body for what reason i don't understand i will say that sylvie's beautiful suit instantly reminded me of elia and luckily that beautiful knit set was in a weird way fields use of support characters wardrobes to bolster how horrible emily dresses is both a blessing and a curse the slight fringe of that burgundy jacket is a magnifique and i appreciate that sylvie is the yang to emily's yin now emily does help herself by wearing a black cocktail dress whose bust is covered by a gigantic pink silk bow detail it's very 1980s but captures emily's outlander style without being overbearing like it usually is also there are just ways to do like over the top looks from fashion brands you know what i mean like we don't have to have her wear zara let's not make this any more realistic than it needs to be but sylvie then adds a seductive little trench coat by valentino which is svelte looking on screen and the v logo buckle and khaki just adds that rich vibe that one loves to see from both the brand and sylvie and mindy looks divine in a scoop neckline draped neon yellow dress by oscar lorento with a side flowing panel i don't know how i don't know why but it works and at this point i'm not explaining nor complaining also kami's little tweed set was pretty lame and blah especially considering she had a good dramatic scene and monologue couldn't we have done something a little bit less zara knocks off chanel maybe add a little bit of drama for episode 4 emily starts this off by apologizing to kemi or so we think but she should have just been apologizing to all of us for wearing that heinous dolce gabbana set i get the dojin gabana in essence is back and there's not much we can really do about it but whether or not people are over its problematic tendencies it doesn't absolve it has just become ugly clothing and to top it off a green and white gingham blazer is added over top which is a motif we have seen before remember that black and white short suit we saw from season one does this season's gingham make any sense also no but in the context of the show's desire to throw everything on but the kitchen sink absolutely i am also confused when talking about emily's lack of editing in her outfits you can't tell me she wouldn't have pinterest boards full of fashion designer quotes in script fonts saying that's not true is a lie yet she can't follow coco chanel's famed advice and yeah maybe coco scores higher on the problematic fashion designer spectrum but dolce isn't like too far behind emily's kind of a villain so it makes sense for her to take that advice but of course our queen sylvie delivers yet another gorgeous look this time a sheath dress full of what looks like the paintings found on grecian vases and while i might be reaching i have a hunch it might be inspired by a very famous yves saint laurent collection the spring 1971 collection was called scandal mostly because it referenced the 1940s which was a really horrible time for the parisians and the french in general because they were taken over by the germans while there was a lot for stuffy and conservative editors to scoff at a print by maison abraham a famed luxury textile manufacturer depicted grecian va's prince of nude men which was incredibly controversial mostly because it was pretty gay again it might be a stretch but i'm gonna choose to believe that this is the dresses inspiration otherwise i will be sad and haven't i endured enough in trying to find meaning in the clothes on this tv show the next look we see is a printed dress paired with knee high brown boots and a highlitter yellow jacket and bag what is the color story i have a migraine just trying to think about it to make matters worse when emily takes off that coat which is actually kind of nice if styled properly like a few other pieces she wears we get to see a tropical motif on the dress and a little sleeveless crop jacket vest over top to be honest the dirt covered leak is far more elegant than emily ever will be and then we just we're just laying on how horrible things will be because we see emily wearing a checkerboard hat on the way home and i can't unsee a cringy fedora montage flash before my eyes and it burns intensely i also can't take the romantic leak cooking montage seriously not because of the cooking of leaks no because now i can't unsee that the hat has a singular strand of jewelry falling from it because it obviously wasn't enough by itself emily's purple sweater with branch and leaf motifs is actually very sweet and it's so nice and i'm willing to just politely say that the skirt matches the yellow and the sweater and that's a color match and so like congrats team and i'll ignore the fact that she adds another hideous robe jacket on top so we can just move on to the next episode episode five we're almost done with the first part the burnt red look that emily starts the episode off with is actually quite sweet it feels like a well done toned down take on her usual garish fashions if she was always dressed like this it might make her a little bit more banal but also a little bit more likable and i think she needs to be a lot more likable the mona lisa tote is a little much though considering she is very rarely ever in a museum but the wool bomber jacket is a nice touch lace continues to pop up this time in a blue asymmetrical top which speaks for itself again we'll say emily is a product girl but just so misguided hence the oversized belt and the plaid circle skirt i think it just is especially hard to watch because lily collins herself is a gorgeous specimen of a human being both in appearance and personality from what i've read but it's just a shame to see such a beauty in clothing that actively makes me want to actively look away from her camis doing a very dior by maria gracia curie look in a green and black plaid blazer with beret and wide leg pants and while it's nothing to really look at it doesn't cause one to be nauseous so there you have it somehow maria grazia has turned into a good reference point for me through emily in paris and like there's enough on the show that's making me question my life luckily sylvie continues to eat emily up this time a grey suit by alexandre votier that has a beautifully nipton waist with draped lapels that centers the focus on the torso and lets a crisp and beautiful fitted pant be the support this is all while emily wears yet another ugly checkerboard piece and i say to myself self say aye could we not have just carrie bradshaw this moment and done a louis vuitton spring 2013 look by marc jacobs not only because you know the checkerboard actually is fascinating from that collection and done in both beautiful black and yellow but if we couldn't get a full look of it it's not unbelievable that emily would have stumbled upon just a skirt or a top in some vintage store in paris we could just make that up and it would be fine kami has been doing this whole wearing almost all black for episodes because like she's in mourning i presume and i can't believe that it's not a nod to being sad about gabrielle but something about these tattoo pants and this flouncy top feels like a step in a better direction mindy's green glittery suit is actually quite lovely and perfectly accessorized with that large sloping neckline and considering it's a chopar event it pays homage without her being you know doused in costume jewelry which is smart a show power event you don't want her in like costume jewels sylvie also grows only chica as while the white dress and jacket with gold chevron embroidery feels like a vintage givenchy set by alexander mcqueen that she got in the boutique ever so casually it wouldn't be off the runway though because like well that would just be too obvious for sylvie she's not that kind of girl emily's redcoat with white lines zigging and zagging all over it is actually kind of nice and the silhouette has a very balenciaga-y feeling to it that might be dramatic of me to say but like i need to say fashion designer names so it get me through this is the first of these obvious kimono inspired jackets that has actually done her a service instead of just a diss and i guess getting it halfway through the show is on par with emily and when she does a headband with an almost 60s like hairstyle it only adds a little bit of elegance too and the heart dress underneath isn't bad but again prada instantly comes to my mind because the lips print from spring 2000 is just right there and could have been so good but i will say that the sparkly crystal trim on the neckline of the dress is like a shiny little touch that just gives me some faith we'll see if that faith is misplaced in the second part of this review though overall the first five episodes of emily and power season two is as expected confusing the show is lacking the quirky fashion oriented plot lines that we came to expect in season one thus far and as someone who was really drawn to the show because of that it's disappointing as for emily she goes in and out of having cute moments but nothing that really wows or makes one fall in love with her and like you're kind of supposed to fall in love with her i think i think between mindy and kami some looks are so good and others are also utterly confusing and silvia's the only consistently show-stopping dresser and it's a shame that it has to be that way because this should be a fashion show but it's feeling like a fashion no so let me know what you guys thought of the first five episodes of emily in paris season two i'd love to hear your thoughts in the comment section down below thank you guys so much for watching the second review will be out soon i promise so with that ttyl
