hey my name is adam meshan i'm a singer songwriter and vocal coach today we're going to be going through one of the questions that i get very often what is the difference between falsetto and head say to voice so first of all we have to understand what head voice chest voice mix the all these terminology what they mean chest voice is the voice where we speak ah chest voice so head voice is a place where that sound gets lifted up into the head that's our head voice so head voice can take two forms it can either be in the form of a open released relaxed sound which is very breathy which is falsetto falsetto or it can come in the form of a connected stronger sound which has more compression behind it which basically means that the vocal cords are squeezing together a little bit more and there's more time where the vocal cords are closed together the muscle fiber of the vocal cords gets involved and so it's not a mix because we're not using too much chest we're just using a little little bit of that compression so that the vocal cords come together so we get a i've got some exciting news for you i've been hard at work building a six part video series that's absolutely free teaching you exactly what it takes to build a confident and strong singing voice so if you're interested in getting early access to these videos please click the link down below to join the early bird wait list so if you hear there's a difference the first one that i'm doing is head voice the second one that i'm doing is falsetto falsetto is where we let that leak of air come through now what a lot of people don't realize is to get a really good nice falsetto you really need to let go of any compression altogether so a lot of people try to like do a half falsetto half chest voice so i'll hear a lot of people like go up into their falsetto and they'll go ah and they won't be able to release completely when we are in falsetto we really want to let it go completely and a place where falsetto will be found is like in a song like love yourself cause if you like the way you look that much right there justin bieber uses a lot of falsetto it's used a lot in pop r b that type of stuff it is an amazing stylistic tool and a really great exercise for increasing the flexibility in the voice making sure that everything stays relaxed head voice on the other hand is a definitely used often in music but it's something that is much more connected it's not so much of a style point but more of a way that singers get into their high range without sounding breathy and falsetto a great example of this would be tracks in my tears so take a good look at my face sir that versus so take a good look at my face the second one falsetto first one is head voice in our upper range we always have a choice do we want to be in a head voice falsetto or a mix so we always have that choice whether we want to be in any one of those coordinations and our goal as singers is to be able to switch between those as seamlessly as possible within songs and be able to use them to bring out the emotion we want in that song so if i'm singing something that is soft that really needs that tenderness i'm not going to sing with that really punchy strong sound which is mix i'm going to sing much more in a released high falsetto or even head voice depending on how i want to approach it so i hope this helps to clarify some of the differences between head voice and falsetto how they're both really in our head register but one is a disconnected sound that's very breathy so meaning that the vocal cords are not fully coming together with their muscle fiber it's just the ligament of the vocal cord coming together and head voice where more of that muscle comes together you get more of a seal of that air and you get more compression behind it but not enough to take you to a mix and so there you kind of have those three different approaches let me know if you have any questions in the comments down below if you like this video please leave a like down below helps me out with the youtube algorithm if you want to see more videos like this right there check out that one you're gonna like it check it out
