all right so first when talking about improving vocal resonance we have to discuss what is the definition of vocal resonance is a term that describes where the sound is vibrating so we're talking about vibration now there's a lot of places where we can feel the voice vibrating we can feel it in our chest we can feel it in our mouth in our hard palate and our soft palate we can feel it up in the nasal cavities into the head so our locale of vibration is very important when it comes to the voice because i could sing or talk kind of like this where it's far back in my throat or even down here where it's got it right in my throat or i can bring my tone forward into what we call the mask so that's like feeling the vibration right over here in the front of the face that really helps bring the sound forward and gives it a bright resonant quality so that is really what we're talking about when we're talking about improving the resonance we're talking about finding a quality that is pleasing and that carries when it comes to singing so that you don't have to work so hard to make the sound project so now that you understand what resonance is it's important to identify what is your resonance pattern and how do you go about producing resonance so resonance occurs whether you're singing or talking so i want to do this on two steps first we're going to talk see what the resonance is there then we're going to sing and we're going to use the tool of recording so then that way we can have more of an objective idea of what our voice is sounding like alright so pull out your phone right now and i want you to record yourself speaking out this phrase oh say can you see by the dawn's early light so we just want to record that now i want you to play back and listen to that notice where do you feel the sound is coming from does it sound oh say can you see or does it sound oh say can you see or does it sound like oh say can you see where is your kind of locale of vibration happening where is the resonance occurring also while you're doing it try to visualize what that feels like in your body right so we're going to also feel the resonance and that's an important tool that we can use to then get the correct sort of resonance when we're singing now what we're going to do is we're going to record it and we're actually going to sing it this time so hit record and sing oh say can you see by the dawn's early light okay that's all i want you to do for now is i want you to focus in on the spoken and the song and i want you to now listen back to those two options and i want you to hear what is the difference between your spoken version and your sung version for most of you what you're going to notice about your spoken version is that there's going to be a lot of forward resonance a lot of us speak and communicate with very forward resonance because we're trying to convey a message we really want the sound to project as far as possible and so a lot of people will have a very forward tone but if you're tend towards mumbling or you have an overly squeezed type of don't or a squeeze type it down like this there's different ways to squeeze the tone but that will also come out in your speaking if that is your tendency so try to notice what's happening there also notice what happens with your resonance as you're singing the line does it change does it shift at all from that spoken piece to the song piece if you want to sing with more confidence and power then you have to sign up for my lesson subscription you get two group lessons with me personally every single week you get access to all my courses and you get access to recordings of all my one-on-one lessons with my students that will help you learn vicariously through them click the link down below to sign up now now remember in this first step our only job is to notice what is happening so we're not actually manipulating or changing anything just yet but we just want to notice what is the process and how are we using our voice when it comes to resonance all right so now that you've noticed what your tendencies are we're going to jump into some exercises that are going to help to isolate specific types of resonance and they're gonna help you balance out your resonance and find more of an ease throughout your singing voice so first one we're gonna do is an ng sound as in the word sing so at the end of the word sing we're going to hold that ng sound just make sure that the back of your tongue meets the soft palate and we don't want to tense up the front of the tongue so the back of the tongue is going to be doing all the work the front of the tongue is going to stay very relaxed we're just going to go again sing and just hold that out now we're gonna put that on the melody [Music] [Laughter] itself and try to notice here where we're isolating just our nasal resonance what happens to the tone does it sound overly nasal now here we want it to sound overly nasal because when we add the mouth back into the picture we're going to get much more of a resonant tone so i'll show you what that sounds like so if i go it sounds really nasal but then when i drop my tongue i'm not actually shifting the resonance it's just we're getting an additional resonance chamber which is your mouth into the picture so we're going to go and so there it doesn't sound nearly as nasal on the ah as it does on the ng it's just because we're isolating that specific spot so that we can really hone in and fix that area so that's what i want you to do don't let it be a lot of people have the tendency to let it fall back don't do that we want to try to find it forward feel the resonance as much as possible right here in the front of the face [Music] [Laughter] good now i want you to record this next part we're going to record ourselves doing that again we're going to do it double we're going to do first on the ng then on the words and see if the words sound a little bit different than that first recording you made so we're going to record oh say can you see by the dawn's early light now i want you to play back the very first song piece and play back that last song piece and see if there is any difference there what about the exercise was able to bring out more of that forward resonance and see if that improves it the next exercise is going to also focus in on bringing out a little bit more of that brighter quality in the voice but here we're actually opening the mouth the main keys to focus on here is number one bringing the tongue all the way down as close to the chin as possible number two making sure the upper teeth are showing that's going to engage your zygomatic muscles bring them up and that's important for finding this bright quality to the voice finally we want to focus in on a very whiny tone so we don't want this to sound normal we want it to sound really na na na na na little whiny kid style so what we're gonna do is stick the tongue out and we're gonna go try that now we're going to go into the melody [Music] now again i want you to pull out your recorder hit the record button and sing it again like that and we're gonna double it up this time so we're gonna go oh say can you see by the dawn's early light and see what happens with your tone when you're singing there now play back the first option that we did without any exercise and that option see what's the difference now the final exercise we're going to run through is a great exercise for finding the resonance now this is all purely imagined so this is all in your head but what your mind does tells your vocal tract how to shape so what we're going to do is we're going to play around with two separate different types of resonance one that is lower so we're going to call that below the pen and then one that is higher kind of occurs a little bit higher in the body that one we're going to call above the pen so i've got a pen you can get a pencil you can get a straw whatever you want but we're going to bite down on the pen and we want to make sure first to put our resonance below the pen so we're going to go i feel my resonance kind of occurring here in my throat that's definitely below the pen so we want to focus in on that sort of resonance that is something that we're going to want to get away from we don't want to use that when we're singing because that's going to put too much pressure on the throat and it's going to sound a little bit dull and dopey so what we want to do is bring that up now and we're going to try to put it above the pen so thinking and then it's all in our imagination we're going to imagine over the pen this is going to help you bring your resonance forward now you could do this without a pen but what the pen does is it helps to give us a focal point on where we're placing the voice up or down and play with both of those now we're going to try to put it into the melody so we're going to go [Laughter] now it's important to note that with something foreign in your mouth you're going to have the tendency to want to retract your tongue so you're going to want to pull back on your tongue try to avoid that make sure that your tongue touches the pen the entire time as you do this exercise that will help avoid any sort of pullback or retraction on the tongue and make sure that it's placed optimally so now that we've got that we're going to try to do it double we're going to go oh say can you see by the dawn's early light so i'm making sure to always keep that resonance even as i'm singing it when i take away the pencil i'm still focusing on keeping that upward resonance as opposed to oh say being falling back down there i forgot to mention that you should record that last one and when you're done recording it play back that first take that we did and then play back after doing the pen exercise and see what the difference is now this is just going to help to focus that resonance higher up and you're gonna probably notice a slight difference in the way that you're producing the sound or even a bigger difference now let me know in the comments down below which exercise did you find actually brought out more of that upward resonance more into the face into the mask and also which of them produce the best recording afterwards and what i want you to do now is take that and apply it to any songs that you're working on so this doesn't obviously just work on the only one that we were trying we're just trying something that's simple but you're welcome to try any of these exercises with any melody that you're working with it'll really help you start to apply these principles of resonance and proper resonance placement to the songs that you're singing that's how you're going to see the biggest difference in your voice so i hope you liked this video if you did please hit the like button down below if you want to see more videos like this check out
