what is the difference between head voice and falsetto we're going to clarify that today welcome to sink e hello singing geeks my name is Ronnie Peterson and I'm here to geek out on your voice so several of you have now asked me to clarify the difference between head voice and falsetto and so it is definitely time that we get into that especially because I know that all these different terminologies for some of the same things it can be quite confusing and also quite frustrating when you're working hard to learn on your own so let's get into it so I suggest that the terminology for some aspects of the voice it can vary and this is because there are different schools of singing and different sort of philosophies on how your voice works and some of them conflicts but what's really most important is that you understand how your sound is created what it sounds like and how you can use this knowledge to get the sound that you want from a sort of scientific viewpoint your voice is divided into four vibratory mechanisms or registers which denotes the way that they vibrate your vocal folds and the sound quality that they produce so we have the M 0 which is the vocal fry' it's the way lowest lowest notes are so maybe sometimes you try to go low low low low low and when you get get to your lowest note your voice sort of starts having this Airy sort of you get that buzz out bubbles out of your vocal folds that's the MC rule there's the M one we just solves your chest voice where you speak and sing some of your more fuller notes then there's the M 2 which is the half voice and also the falsetto and then there's the M 3 which is that whistle register you might have heard Mariah Carey carry out some of those notes if you're interested to hear more about each of these registers in detail let me know in the comments below but right now we're gonna focus on the aim to register which is where you find your head voice and your falsetto so what's the difference if they're both in the m to register in its simplest explanation my experience is that many people refer to the M to register in women as head voice and the M to register in men s falsetto now why might that be I think it is something to do with the fact that the sound quality of the M to register or the head voice in men is different the names to register sometimes is in women and this is because the vocal folds in men are larger or longer their head voice sound it tends to sound a thinner than it does in women relative to the chest voice and so the head voice in men can be more distinct a band that really took advantage of this sound and their music was the Bee Gees you might be familiar with their sound but they really took advantage of this insisting sort of hit voice sound that had this sort of thin sound to it and a lot of people gotten to no head voice for men as that falsetto but those are like all the Bee Gees they sing in falsetto and this is also where the conversation gets interesting because now we have moved from talking about the anatomical part of a register of how the vocal folds vibrate and we're actually just talking about the sound and what's interesting here is that some people irregardless if it's a man or if it's a woman that's singing they call it Los Zetas when it has a thin persistent sound an example that is that head voices oh very clean and connected and then you have the falsetto sound so we can talk about falsetto as a register in male voices and then we can talk about full settle as a head voice sound some people also denote the falsetto and a sort of breathy m2 sound or a breathy head voice sound some people they hear that as a full set of sounds so now again we have closed that who falsetto Oh falsetto and but what's interesting here is that I think we can all agree on that there is the m2 register and there is a head voice and the nurse different sort of effects that you can add to it and some people call those different effects the breathy or that sort of insisting sound they called that falsetto so let's run up this discussion about falsetto some people use the term falsetto to denote the male head voice or the male into register sup you will use the term falsetto to talk about this sort of insisting ah sound and you might have heard from the Bee Gees and some people use the term falsetto to refer to this breathy hit-boy sound Hey right so what's really important here is that next time someone maybe asks you to sing something in falsetto you just ask them if they could please clarify if it's one of these three and that way you guys have good communication and you can sing in the way that people want you to and also the way that you want to sing so now others have to say it's just that I'm super excited every time I get to kick out with you guys so just keep the questions coming the more times you guys are asking the same questions from different people I just get to make a video about it and that's just so much fun and lastly if you haven't done it yet I would just love for you to subscribe to this subscribe a button right here so that you can join me next time we're going to continue to geek out on your voice to create the sound that you want [Music]
