so one of the drinks that you as a singer should stay away from to get the most out of your voice today I'm going to share with you five drinks that are bad for singers welcome to singing hi singers my name is Rania Peterson and I'm here to geek out on your voice so some drinks that can really affect your voice and negatively when you sing and I want to share them with you so that you know what to stay away from especially on the day of a performance now really quickly I want to say I am NOT a doctor I'm a vocal coach and so if you feel any discomfort or that anything is wrong with your voice go see your doctor that being said these rules it is something that has been researched and it is something that is widely known in the vocal community so let's get started harmful drink number one is any cold drink if you didn't know about this I'm really happy that you're getting to know about it now because it can really wreak havoc on your voice so why you might ask well it has to do with the fact that cooling down of the muscles makes them less agile they just don't function as fast or as well you might have experienced it sometimes if you go outside when it's freezing and your fingers they just don't move as fast or in the same way that you want them to I grew up at Denmark so I'm really familiar with this for example having to unlock my bike in the cold weather and like screwing on all the little knobs and it was really hard the same thing happens to your voice because your voice has all these muscles and even your vocal folds they're made of muscle and these muscles they have to be warm enough to stretch and limber in the way that you could make all these beautiful pitches so really be aware of this you don't want to hurt your voice even if it's cold and you're pushing too much and it's not agile that can really cost damage so make sure that you drink room-temperature water and my worst fear is always when I go to a gig and if I forgot my water bottle and I get a chilled bottle of water from the bar it's just not good and what you can do if you are in the scenario is try to like swish it around in your mouth a little bit before you drink it and if you have to do it but really just bring your own water with you that is room temperature you I've heard so many singers talk about this before and you think that they're being divas something about their water but now you know it is actually really really important so watch out for cold drinks harmful drink number two acidic drinks such as soda coffee fruit juices that I have like acidic citrus juices sports strings like Gatorade what these acidic drinks that do is that they can cause what is known as acid reflux so what acid reflux is is that there's acid from your stomach that travels up through your esophagus and here it can cause your vocal folds to swell they get really irritated and this swelling makes it hard to stay on pitch they can make it hard to sustain note and it can make make it hard to just be agile with your voice and make riffs and runs in general I always make this analogy that I'm saying what if you were playing guitar with swollen fingers right you would be stumbling around and having a hard time hitting the right pitches and it's the same so if you're thinking about well what should I drink instead then try to drink room-temperature water right at least just on the day of your performance and then you can have a sweet drink afterwards if you want that but just try and keep it to room temperature water just before your performance drink number three milk face drinks not only can milk based drinks also cause acid reflux but a lot of singers they described it when they drink milk based drinks like a hot chocolate or just normal chocolate milk or just milk and that it creates this coat and they really mess with your muse mucus production and it makes you feel like you have so much phlegm on your voice it can sound raspy or you can just feel uncomfortable and then what happens with a lot of people is that they will start coughing to try and get rid of this flim and coughing it's like your vocal folds they sort of collide a lot of times and it creates swelling and then we're back to the same problem as we had with the acid reflux is that it's hard to get the right pitches and it's hard to have an agile voice now some people they don't have this problem so if it's not a problem that you haven't then don't worry about it but if you do feel that if it affects your mucus for action or how it feels in your throat just in general then opt for some water before the show and then you can go have a milkshake after the show that drink number four is caffeinated drinks now you guys all know that I like to stay hydrated right well what caffeinated drinks what they do is that they pull water out of your body it's like coffee it's teas but black tea or green tea and you can also be Cola and a lot of sodas they have caffeine in them so what they do is that they dehydrate you they pull water out of your cells so even though it's liquid that you're you know you're taking in it actually dehydrates you so that it pulls water out of your body just runs right through you and that's why you have to pee so much when you drink coffee because it dehydrates you now I love coffee I love good coffee and but on the day of a show I'll drink herbal tea with a little bit of honey instead that's my ritual bad drink number five it's last but not least alcoholic beverages gosh I'm feeling like I'm sitting here and I'm being such a party killer you can't really out drink alcohol you can't drink coffee but like a coffee alcohol it also dehydrates you it's really one of the bad ones it dehydrates you it also is cold usually when you're having alcoholic beverages like beer or a drink right it's usually chilled and last but not least a lot of alcoholic beverages they are Carbonite carbonated and what happens here is that with all the carbonation it really makes you feel gassy right and there's just nothing worse than being on a stage and trying to build out a note while trying not to burp just don't do it you can have a drink after the show right now what happens sometimes it can be a little bit hard in the vocal when you're a singer is that especially if you play in an establishment that serves alcohol is that they will offer you alcohol because you're one of the musicians and also what I find sometimes is especially if you're playing more in a dive bar setting the crowd really loves if you're cheers - cheers them right I've definitely been there usually what I would do is that I will bring the drink up onstage and I will maybe have a few sips and Cheers with the crowd it's really nice to build a connection I won't really have the whole drink until after the show I mean if someone comes and during the show that also happens that they come and they say hey here's a drink or do you want a drink and I think it's really good that you can say hey let's have a drink after the show especially if you are a musician that's just starting out this is a good way to build a fanbase to go have a drink with them after the show so I'm sorry but stay away from alcoholic beverages before your show okay singing geek so those were the five drinks that I advise you to stay away from at least just on the day before your show so try to avoid to have cold drinks try to avoid to have acidic drinks milk based drinks caffeinated drinks and alcoholic beverages on the day before or off your show the same day at your show now all this safe to say is that I'm so happy that you guys come here and geek out with me if you haven't done it already you can subscribe right here so that we can hang out next time where we continue to geek out on your voice to create the sound that you want [Music]
