[Music] only six months ago a federal labor government was thrown out of power pretty soundly how have you managed to make a comeback oh I think we did it by concentrating on state issues what about transport oh that's a high priority of course [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] - you smash Tony Dickinson reporting at bridges collapsed on Granville railway station now police on the same side the bridge is heavy and several carriages of a they say a number of people but to move the bridge off the train will have further details as they come to head Oh delicious the carriage under the features first but then I had to look on the other side of the bridge the right combatives on its side and when carry to what he can and then I waited on the night and fan hello there [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so much more through truckloads he's serious are you it's you looking for the coroner's office yeah it's the last door down the end there we're going near ourselves you would like to give us a hand would you good stuff would you tell the coroner I'm ready to see him your name please from the Justice Department pleased to meet you Tom we are the garden I'm sorry it's an easy mistake I didn't feel anyone can make it well the Department has sent me down to make sure it's all under control you know I beg your pardon is inquiry of yours he's a grand girl right now it's shaping up to be something bigger than Ben Hur I mean 75 75 witnesses not to mention all that evidence if we're not careful this could blow our budget sky-high so I'm here to help move things along [Music] you can't be serious don't tell me you believe that crap about moving things along well pretty big inquiry they don't waste their money yeah I think that's fair enough yeah when was the last time they came nearest leper colonies get more visitors I'll tell you they're up to something shonky I can smell it they never tried to tell me how to do my job before that was the first time sir other magistrates have been getting calls now to decide their cases have they well that's the rumor you and your rumors I remember the last one doing around Sam Bob Hawke was leaving the union movement and going into politics come on he's already been a three-month long state government inquiry into Granville it's been examined inside and out it's caronian hearing it's it's a formality rubber stamp doesn't threaten anyone the sad truth is we're not important enough to be leaned on [Music] completely using just a bag of crisps place the crisps on the backseat carefully like the package until it starts to burn then shut the door and run the oil in the Chris will keep the fire burning till it spreads to the upholstery after that boom and dining the evidence it was supposed to be doing your homework oh sure until tomorrow it's what it does best cases saves the insurance company millions when he solved it absolutely Andy are you teaching him how to burn a car it's a scientific fact like the last one you gave him how to open any lock with a borrow and some hubba bubba we'll have the headmaster here soon and then we'll all be in trouble mr. Osmond most of the evidence of prestress and the railways have admitted that they caused the accident which which makes things easier for everyone and them so when can I see their report another accident report people get killed by try and surely someone on the railways writes down why boss doesn't like him do you know those biscuits must be six months old well the cops I've been told him he needs the best you seen his qualifications so my desk it's private Boris Osmond Bachelor of engineering diploma applied science fellow should apply masculine minds and industries mechanical draftsman certificate member of the Institute of Engineers Australia well straight after the accident the government had asked a full inquiry and a judge Staunton but because they're all says that the coroner must investigate all accidents there are two inquiries into Granville yes judge Staunton found that the derailment was caused mostly by poor track mate did you accept that yes I believe I will then what am I doing here if you don't mind me asking well I was looking for someone to help me out technically you came highly recommended as an expert in the field but you know how they define an expert X is the unknown and spurred us a trip under pressure it's an engineer's joke this is no joking matter of course not I'm aware of your predicament sir how difficult it must be for you mister I won't see through a minefield holding this investigation to do the job properly you're gonna have to explain how the New South Wales railways came to be in such a mess I think the Liberal Party's gonna thank you for that they didn't run deceit in the first place lady's not gonna want to know you if they have to spend money fixing the problem just you're on your own with this one I blame you for being nervous I appreciate you coming here but I feel that um well I don't think we'll see eye to eye on this so why don't I just keep giving our Greta mr. Osmond is just leaving suppose you noticed that the engined around while the carriage is still stayed on the line so so there's more going on than poor track maintenance thanks for the biscuit then he calls me back and he says when can you start I couldn't believe it you must have felt guilty about the biscuits nothing we'll be there in about ten minutes voice it's bi what call me bi as well everyone I work with does Laura's husband Carla told me you're actually there on the day yeah was it like let me tell you something VI we're gonna eat sleep and [ __ ] this accident for the next three months let's just make some small talk while we can all right we've driven from lead to see this tribe sorry mate the trains off limits this is an order from a dad yeah I have my orders to no one it's near the Granville locomotive we're investigators for the car we have to see it if the right way see no one gets in then no one bloody does anything you do that it's an order from the coroner it's law I'll get a warrant from the boss nobody arrest that trying [Music] they're wholly another inquiry honestly I wish they'd just leave us alone I'm going to bed I can manage on my own McCrone is doing a full investigation and he wants you to know when the inquiries being held you can tell him for me it's a waste of time no amount of shuffling paper will bring my husband back what's your name she's pretty go inside time she is the front door she thinks if there's anything anything at all I can do you let me know okay floor shyness so has 11 know what you said if there was anything well I want the shoes he was wearing there were fancy ones bra you're not used to anyone now so they should be home yes Brown size 11 do you want me to you know clean them up a bit that's my job how's the girl huh your girl wouldn't go to sleep tonight not to me we're home to tuck her in I think you promised to go to sleep okay [Music] mommy no teacher Zhu Zhu hmm big bad wolf and Little Red Riding Hood got married at a sausage sizzle in grandma's backyard Shh and I all lived happily ever after [Music] I wish you'd give the club away we need the extra day love I have claimed those the heels you always miss the hips nobody notices it I do time in a deli or something mama look after that and you wouldn't have to moon mine no no I want your home taking care taking care of me Brian what I'm smelling here you have to be up in five hours so I'll hurry it up a bit don't you dare [Music] then the chemists wife says they are expecting the Astor thou surprised it hadn't happened sooner yeah so I looked at the bridge and check out its records you know something she was right here's the road put up on either side by the council here's the bridge without mother always 20 years ago surprise surprise the bridge is too late for the ride so the railways fill the gap by it in concrete instead of the bridge weighing 100 tons it weigh nearly 350 tons but the railways weren't to know that the bridge was vulnerable it only been hit twice before the bloke in the pie shop told me it's amazing what you can find out in that shopping center nice pies to the chicken a mushroom man yeah I checked it out with the local police in August 1967 a character asked my freight train and Fang slams right into the staunch and holding up the bridge then two years ago in 1975 it happens again this time a coal wagon weighing 80 tons two rails and slams right into it does damage to take SC Granville was the third time the third time the ball Street Bridge had been hit three times in ten years are you sure sergeant Melissa Blake from the pawn shop and the coppers got it wrong well it's hit once you can say it's bad luck but twice [Music] [Music] [Music] Karnas office I'll put you through now I told you no cause greater no sir not at all I know how busy you must be not more than usual mr. father in the inquest we wound up pretty soon you know bloody well which one I take it you mean Grandal why they don't you said you meant to look at that bloody locomotive it's already been examined fifty thousand bloody times you can turn up here you're wasting court resources they want the whole thing finished now who exactly are they I'm sorry you so upset but I have to have someone look over that train we are talking about 83 deaths 83 wasn't beautiful I wonder this so much work look I'll tell you what I'll do why don't I send someone down to your office are you saying that you'll replace me sir I just want to help you along get the train back on the track so to speak other if I have to you think my [ __ ] while was leaning on the car no I didn't say that don't you ever let on that I told you he don't know the boss Bo you'd never stand for did tell [ __ ] away the guy one you listenin to paid site what's that a secretary you might have heard the occasional word what did mr. Wayne say do you talk about us going after to Laura said he wanted his staff to examine the Train yes good on him I knew we'd stick it up there are wise don't normally get judges to do their dirty work what do you mean I've done lots of cases against them well they want to get heavy I've got their own lawyers and a minister in Parliament and I need Mary Farquhar to go into bed for them besides he works for the Justice Department so this hearings all about a train trains come under transport departments they have nothing to do with each other so I would Farquhar give a damage lease or detriment law that's what you saw why would you call the coroner at all he'll be my place I'm sorry I didn't mean to no no secrets here mr. husband when you work with the police it's very difficult to hide anything now mr. Farquhar rang - well he feels that the train has been examined enough and if I'm smart I'd agree but you're not smart I said are you not said what else can I do hmm you know what'll happen if I cause trouble next week I'll get a phone call for my annual checkup well that's a nasty cough mr. weir time to retire and you'll get transferred to a little town where it never gets colder than 90 degrees what's the life expectancy of a city cop in out back in New South Wales you still want to examine that train mode [Music] [Music] it ended this curve and derailed right there domani clouded ice then skidded so what's the breach five hundred tons is feeling shrank nothing could have stopped me we're bessel out the dead right behind us we find their belongings in the dirt all the time bringing some watches that's even a good luck charm when the trains come by the commuters close the windows can still smell death around here they reckon it's at f/4 asked to fill out Jack's good morning table [Music] so you take your smoke o's around here they sometimes do the trains go by you have a ringside view of I wasn't there when it happened but in the weeks before I set with your mates up there where the trains rod and well on this section of track you know something yeah I noticed I had this place to myself as my mates have been given the boot the wrong way SEC one-third of all staff removing Deadwood that's what they called it you know what hold those rails to the ground dead wood and that's what happens when you try to remove it no train Road well around that curve especially not at ATK 77 is a usual speed around curves in New South Wales yeah well up there wasn't usual and the speed was a bargain if I know why it's 40 now why and went up after the crash but cut the speed back to 60 then down again to 40 forty yeah I want a list of all derailments since 1957 come on mate you owe me one if I hadn't worked out why that boom guy didn't lower you'd be cleaning out toilets at Strathfield station say that you need him for statistics say anything you like like said that you're getting him for me funny your beauty Thanks you're a champ [Music] [Music] oh great huh I'll be in the morgue for about one hour ah mr. weir look I know you're busy but this won't take a minute mr. Farquhar sent me down he's he's just a bit concerned that you and he well that things got off to a shaky start look I am busy so if you know that that's okay we could we can talk with a runner why don't you tell me what's really going on with Granville nothing calls from Mary Farquhar visits from the head office you're trying to tell me this is par for the course they want you to leave the locomotive alone why hit office is concerned at the cost of this inquiry you are pushing the budget over its limit don't give me any this public service [ __ ] no really sent you here are you aware it's a crime to try and lead on me I don't think you realize what you've got yourself into I am offering you a piece of friendly advice that's all and if you smart you damn well listener [Music] [Music] teas up you should go home greater how long have you been in the public service yeah Gordo's in there maybe 20 years or so how about you 34 years I all work in life my first day my dad said if you want to go find the public service don't have to be brightened don't have to be a Catholic don't even have to be very good at your job just say yes all the time any bar at the top you say no just once and they'll eat you alive when 12 years ago in July same engine as a Granville number 4620 sure there's no doubt about it I checked all the derailments just like you asked me number 46 20 they went out of control going downhill with 44 wagons of coal behind it they derailed and then overturned you went with Falls anyone hurt yeah the driver and the engineer and the funny thing was it hit a staunch and then as well small world in them and last year the same locomotive number 46 20 did it again so Granville was the third time it was a third time that 46:20 had gone off the rails and that's not all boys have a look at that so maybe it wasn't just the tracks after all maybe the engines had problems that's why they won't let us near it I need to examine the locomotive I'll be that in mind look maybe I'm speaking out of turn here but I have a fair idea of what you're up against walking through this minefield I don't want you to concern you so another engine derailed last week what a class 46 no casualties not much damage but it did come off the tracks my contact with the railways told me this isn't gonna go away sir sooner or later you're gonna have to take them on please don't give me advice on how to do much well cry see could use it can't you see what's happening the rules have changed Safety's nice but it's not essential not if it cost too much money I must remain impartial sea is the only institution that's cutting corners to save a few bucks do we just sit back and let them get away with it and hope that our wives and kids aren't on the next train or bus or playing that good boy I found this at the accident site it used to fit the door of a house with a wife and a kid in the dog inside a door will never open again nothing Andy Andy have I told you about this model so it's pretty much what else he said was on a 1 to 55 scale Andy I told you not to play with it I wasn't playing with it well then why is Cochise standing outside the butchers I was looking at the statements you know the ones the witnesses made and one woman said she was outside the shop just before the bridge went down you'd left her after your model that's why I putting their dad to remind you I'm not interrupting uh my Nana figures for my model I was on if I can borrow Cochise I got a companion up to look like a lady bola can you been upset oh gee I'm sorry Andy I shouldn't have got angry with you I lost my temper I just didn't think I did what I've told you never to do what it's this job the Granville job there are things about it I just don't understand Hanny ha it's better be bloody worth it Boris [Music] what the hell are you doing here I have an order from the coroner to inspect the locomotive currently held on these premises it's what I am for Christ you think I'd be here unless it was urgent and charged with contempt of court now open the gate [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] let's get on with it fit the act lights set him up over there come on go get your men with me now all right let's go to school let's go let's go [Music] [Music] take it easy telling me I wanted to be sure they let you in that's all I hope you're not gonna tell me I've wrecked my entire career for nothing [Music] everyone's ready sir with the English call the coroner defender of the dead wonder if the dead even care what happens I don't it's smart if I just walked away from it all it's net what caused this crash in the first place people walking away from responsibility would you excuse me good spot a smoker a mile off Thanks yeah I'd like you for you better to put like threading a needle through an earthquake courage for Randall and you are familiar um Michael McCann jalisco don't see you don't remember me no one forgets that Saxon now I was with Brian Gore then you were when the nurses yes of course my wife said to me this morning I said however you do don't break down and cry no one likes a wet blanket so about ten bucks that I wouldn't he by Joe wreckin happened you you ever think about this No it was an accident I but accidents of causes and then he had all sorts of stories they all buckled up from the heat or a couple like kids like summer rocks and the tracks let me tell you what happened Scottie that train went round abandoned came off I'll never know why not really but they'll hold this hearing and find some cause or so the public thinks they're safe again and everything's under control but it's not we know it we were there when we well the real cause of Grandal was very very single when your numbers up your numbers up and all the lawyers in the world will never change that excuse me as Dipendra magistrate and coroner it is my duty to conduct the inquiry into the deaths of 44 men 37 women and two young girls in what has now become known as the Granville disaster for many of you this inquest will be painful and the court sincerely regrets that but we ask for your patience and your support as we reconstruct the trains last journey [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Eddie Eddie wasn't shy mate come on doctor five yeah now luckily come wait what's the score hmm isn't that what Australians say instead of good morning what's the score did you get the tractor pull yeah idolize signals are all working there our breakfast is that he might know a boy if pie at this hour no pie Mike don't say it the proper way I had a boy what kind of summer is this focus draw [Music] [Music] [Music] I'm a consulting engineer I will I work out why things happen accidents mostly how long have you been doing this over 20 years I also lecture in engineering at the University of New South Wales and you've worked on railway matters before many times all right mr. Rosman will you tell the court what happened on the day of the Granville accident the locomotive was functioning normally when it left mount victoria that's where it begins its run I tagged it yes at 9 minutes past 6:00 every morning [Music] [Music] it stops at all stations between there and Parramatta the locals call it the slugger as they say just crawls along and on that morning it was just like any routine journey you know why not it's not like it's a rock concert it's only heavy metal can I get rids tin foil you know the rules no going out at night until you turn 15 look it's much too practiced to start fighting besides I've got a segment spring for work you try driving an elevator on a day like this my the fan everyone's waiting someone always has flatulence don't gosh we like for work [Music] [Music] I don't know what time I'll be home mom so see you later [Music] mum's in the kitchen we'll have to catch up tonight tonight yeah oh you're not gonna leave me alone with it all day [Music] okay wait I'll type this is college did you pass your exams everyone look there's no answer I better go in there might need me I'm sorry we'll try to be home early life baked dinner fear sister mom it's 100 degrees outside I checked the records and according to the PTC engineers the track have been inspected just days before the accident you'll miss the train if you're not careful [Music] [Music] [Music] we don't already had his breakfast what would you like I'm just can't get through the day on that like when I'm dancing you're complete I don't need anything else I'll always do but I make it into a company or not I'll always beds [Music] [Music] [Music] I see it's not love mmm look your lunch is in the fridge well aren't you gonna say goodbye mark all right suit yourself takes me 91 minutes just against the office so that's three hours today I spent on that train the Blackie sits beside me doesn't possible never says a thing when you start calling him dear I worry electricity sweetheart not now G today I should have told you about it sooner but I just didn't have money so tell me being I could ask them for that Oh see it tonight you're not angry I'll put it off for as long as I could [Music] perhaps a disaster might still be avoided if the track is stable and strong enough to withstand the force of a hurtling train [Music] the track is not Stang dogs bites vital in holding in the track down a one-way or missing rails themselves are poorly maintained later described as potentially dangerous so the track has been worn now past its limit there is still one hope for the 609 from mount victoria if the store churns supporting the bold Street Bridge have been moved by the railways a collision would have been avoided but even after two previous hits they have not been shifted they are totally exposed and vulnerable as they support a massive concrete and steel weighing more than 300 tons carriages of the 609 are all made from timber in 141 people we under this bridge and it drops [Music] [Music] here we even it strike [Music] [Music] the platform was crowded as the train pulled into Parramatta two stations away from Granville when the train arrives at Parramatta one final element is working against it time it is now running three minutes late three vital minutes which must be made up so as it doesn't fall them behind a slower City train it is too late now to save the 609 every twist of fate chance and luck is about to converge and destroy it [Music] ten parts day the train leaves Parramatta station with 469 passengers on board one mainline signals are cleared at once clearing of these signals gives the driver the authority to proceed at maximum speed he is not to know that this speed is unsafe nor that the train he is driving can push the rails wide he's simply doing what the signals tell me [Music] we pass Power Man just through my station trained soon gain speed touching 78 Ches as it reaches the point called lead 73 as the train goes round the curve its front wheels its worn front wheels connects with the side of the track speed of the train the weight of the engine pushed the wheels up a bit higher than normal not much just a fraction just enough for the train to come off the track [Music] train doesn't stop it keeps going on the dirt for hundreds of feet in its wake it creates an incredible cloud of dust and dirt balance the force of 25,000 tonnes it plows into the trestles of the bulb Street bridge [Music] demolishing all of its dungeons but the bridge doesn't fall not yet anyway it balances on its edges here and here the engine continues until it hits this power pole it up roots the power pole kicking it up and ahead of the engine still suspended by power lines the pole swings back into carriage one clipping the roof away from the floor tearing the walls apart like a flying chainsaw it kills eight people and injures dozens more [Music] meanwhile here beneath the balancing bridge most of carriage three and half of carriage for had ground to a halt with 141 passengers inside them all right okay come up the tracks terrific now we'll be late for work it's alright it's alright the worst is over get us the silence is broken by cries of steak harm and it's alright and over the silence comes a crunching sound some of the passengers look out of windows and scream and try to climb through them out of sheer desperation but the force was working against this train now are too great to be resisted most of the victims will not die immediately the impact will push them forward in their seats their shoulders are literally lower than their knees here they will stay unable to move many of them conscious trapped in the heat in the darkness is the suffocating gas leaks all around them 141 people three hundred and twenty tons just lighten what was that it wasn't the trying to try and stop [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] hey be careful in there it's like a it's like a big one rescue school you guys already know she passed I saw this miss come with me so go babe 11 Darren forget about me look after the young ones just get me a sieve it how do you rock honey right in this carriage because it was not spiking oh let me doctor tell me to quit mmm feels better already 34:10 vkg 34:10 the Scottsville way you've got Devante if you want to cry in the accident time this is not a bunny answer this is a disaster here is a to Yui newsflash tony dickinson reporting a bridges collapsed on top of a train at further details as they come to hand to Yui keeping you in touch with all the news and 14 and a half tonight that's a nightmare bus we got a lot of beds in there anyway in yeah there's a ton of a it's ready mom no I can't move oh okay John you settle down right we can't help them now so we'll just try to stay calm yeah you don't understand sir I cannot bear this I'm claustrophobic please just get me out that sound you're gonna hear it's escaping gas now that that's probably gonna make us both sick so let's just be sensible about this okay yeah we're dropping off held it down settle down my mailbox look so just wriggle around the pin see me create a bit of spice that's a blender you order move it [Music] chainsaw they're gonna blow us up wriggle it out the back the gas in there blanke hey guys all right hi hi turn that off this guest in there gasps oh right go gasps bald Strait bridge was supposed to weigh 120 tonnes but due to mistakes and planning and design its weight was almost three times that now a lot of trouble came from the fact that there were no cranes strong enough to lift such heavy slabs and due to the leaking gas the rescuers couldn't using equipment to break the concrete up see the only way they could reach the injured was by hacking through the roofs the roofs were made of a sticky tar [Music] [Music] good morning mrs. Tony Dickinson Granville all the valuable police have been rushed to Granville where an overhead bridge has crashed on train carriages trains have been called for in addition to the police rescue squad ambulance and fire brigades it's still a scene of confusion a minute ago police reported finding two if they injured just wandering down the road and police have asked all traffic to keep well clear of the Granville ground [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's in the truck grab a pair of both counties as well [Music] choice John you come with me oh they'll be a drunken stupor on balls joining short [Music] [Music] John stern the clouds Margaret carriage three by now was fourteen inches high buried in the rubble were nine injured passengers the the engine dead were stacked on each other those two and three hi and to make matters worse the carriages seats were twisted around their arms and legs pinning them down like heavy chains and in carriage for two men were trapped surrounded by thirty-one corpses and we knew them it's alright sister oh we we knew that it wouldn't be long before the bodies that start to decompose and even if we could reach the engine the time they had left to live was was limited there's this thing called the crash syndrome we don't really understand what it is we've only just began to hear about it but when someone is crushed by a heavy weight the crushing makes the kidneys play up and they begin to produce these poisons well the poisons can end up killing someone that would otherwise survive we don't know too much about it to be honest we just knew we had to get them out not house did Wow John I came up it's all right we found you now my name is Margaret I'm gonna do this if you can hear me try and squeeze my hand that's great that's wonderful okay look I'll let go okay there's someone else here who wants to meet you his name's dr. white fingers are up but it's not a bad guy hi if you're in a lot of pain try and squeeze my hand once good god you're doing well you're doing really well now if the pain is in your your legs squeeze my hand once amazing action if the pain is in your stomach try and squeeze my hand once come on come on tell me okay it's okay lamb it's alright we're not leaving I promise you no one's gonna leave you [Music] [Music] I'm a fireman by profession on the day of the wreck I was off work my I was sick so the police called me and told me to round up the rescue squad urgently Nepean rescue we're volunteers and since I'm in charge well I couldn't just stay at home I don't know why excuse me ladies scuse me no I I work mainly from this end of the wreckage dick constable Lam and myself entered into well as far as we could go into what remained of carriage three spoiling everyone Ericka Watson was lying face-up upwards her back was arched over a seat and her legs were pinned underneath it there were two dead bodies lying on top of Erika she had lain like that in the heat in the dark with those two dead bodies for over an hour Vlasta come on sweetheart talk to us come on dollar you bet we will work was began on Erica by the rescue squad and I moved on to the fourth carriage although half of it was crushed the other half was still intact the big Menace here was the carriages ceiling it was made of a lemon Xperia land when the the bridge came down and shattered it and splinters has gone flying everywhere and they had impaled a lot of the passengers we tried to pump compressed air into the wreckage we were trying to dissipate the gas which was leaking just when we thought things couldn't get any worse we discovered that the rescue groups had equipment that was not compatible so the police rescue hydraulics couplings didn't match the Fire Brigades and so on was every rescuers worst nightmare we learned the hard way at Granville we fix that problem since and all rescue equipments now standardized but if it ever happens again we'll be prepared a little wine gray right I've got a live one in here miles can't tell how old he is she conscious it didn't just I don't know how we survived the bridge is pulling right across these lakes we're gonna crawl underneath the carriage see the car moving that way Joe Joey that area isn't stable right if we don't do something soon the folks that are dying in there they all will are you bringing that you've seen what it's like how much longer do you think they can last time now if there's a way to get doing from underneath the carriage let's go and find it and you send someone in the talk try and keep me spirits that's how it started I just suddenly be walking by and specular Williams grabbed me and said hi mo you're looking after anyone Spanish right well there's a man in there now bridge is falling across these legs we need someone to talk to make sure he doesn't lose consciousness didn't talk to you all Gareth II have this same Slav Tuscan and sometimes Caesars but I was 80 they even had a sign with it did I well I got it wrong you don't know do you I mean you're supposed to be the expert on how things are done but you got no bloody idea [Music] I have considered the railways submissions concerning mr. Osmonds theories and I have studied the evidence closely hopefully says the Train wasn't to blame I hope he's damn well smart enough have you seen my little girls they were on this time my wife dropped them off Rosie's eight and a half sees there were hundreds of people on this train they're bound to be all right I was all my head I should have done more I should have saved them I guess we the bridge into three or four slabs yes we can start to use the coins to try and lift it but there is a chance that this Timescape disintegrates what it's what the engineers I think I said the whole thing could come crashing down on whoever's underneath we could end up killing everyone I just can't risk it and slabs gotta stay if everyone's being rescued what all right what we're gonna do is we're gonna try it cap your shoe away from your foot all right so that we can reach your foot it's my foot all right can you feel it No I still be able to dance hey Jerry Jerry might just give us a squad that stolen equipment was never recovered we asked the we asked the railways to reimburse my squad for its losses but they refused and we weren't the only ones hit either you know some ambulances had property stolen too there were even reports that several onlookers crept into carriage for to rob the dead ratting is I believe the technical term for that you worship because only rats would do that I guess we saw the best and the worst of it that day rats and heroes side by side what this happen what they do I expect an inquiry I'll sort that out how are we gonna live with this I have been at the scene arriving only minutes after disaster struck their report follows beginning with Jim sterling live from grant here at the crash site at the moment it's the longest wait that I think I've ever seen in my life so far we've seen 13 bodies brought out from the rig it's understood there could be as many as 50 more pinned inside we don't know nobody knows the full horror will be realized when they finally lift up those last sections of Richmond as we mentioned earlier we've had Chris on the scene since right when the disaster [Music] Oh what proper big dinner and then and you know we'll get pushed in there and I'll sing it some decent Catholic sons [Music] the pike [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I promise they go I am dunno a coach [Music] right right they're ready to didn't bring it here when I tell you is sick wanted to send you a dumb to play I'm a real master trying for dinner it's very gardening back there until one of you rusts you'll have to cough now don't be silly that's your job just keep the knife real shot depending on but could me making a fool of myself careful [Music] I knew [Music] this is Australia's worst train crash certainly since 1908 when 44 people died in one and perhaps ever the crash comes after stringent criticism of the state's railway Oh John relax you're right across the road from the hospital you but you paid you with you what more can we do I just keep seeing them lying me and if we got this sooner maybe we could attend something we did what we couldn't let's eat I come on hey you spaghetti no I think I'm getting the hang of this it's all in relaxing your wrists and the smell of the blood on my hands I can't get rid of it the Broncos wife tonight the guy was smiling can you imagine that when you think about what is being through hey listen to me if you want to survive in this job you don't think you do what you can you hope to god it helps but when it's over it's over today was just another day another day at the office God say pick up your fork and eat have continued to operate under tons of twisted wreckage doesn't anything bother you yeah that because in about a minute's time but they're gonna be showing both of us and frankly I never let my work interfere with my dinner excuse me could you turn that thing off they just puttin us off our meal thank you [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] five minutes time main slab will be lifted now when we bring the bodies out treat these people with dignity Christ knows they're entitled to it a bill Gary tag the buddies live and I take photographs for the car now and we're finished the rest of you will move in take the deceased to our temporary morgue up there I expect this to be done swiftly calmly the other workers will follow your example so you must a metal watch maintain your composure set understood machete on the Bob looks 100 miles away I'll have a night Josh oh no no no their lencho age before beauty just give me a minute to get up Oh mark okay Oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] local yeah it's just on the news that made yours died one from Grandal laying why a lazy Pig take it easy I wasn't thinking take it easy okay [Music] inadequate track and buggy maintenance was found by the inquiry that followed the crash to be the major cause of the Granville disaster today an extra 1,000 men are working on railway track work and a two hundred million dollar program is underway to upgrade the state's rail tracks over the next five years the metropolitan area certainly needs a considerable amount of work on points and leads on drainage and on sleeper replacement and that's broadly the nature of the work that will be done within the two hundred million dollar program which the government has just agreed to is that forty million dollars a year is it enough to improve the track players that will make a considerable difference to the general standard of the track and mean that it depends less upon the daily inspection in immediate correction practices which are part and parcel of the maintenance practices of the system are you sure I guess it that night when we saw the locomotive but since then I check the photos and the measurements I it's almost time lots of trains are using that section of track but they didn't derail why because their wheels were ok if they could go around that curve at fairly high speeds and not come off but the Granville locomotives two front wheels were worn and I mean and that's why they didn't want us to see the locomotive in case we saw the wheels yes it doesn't make sense there are always have already accepted full responsibility for what happened at Granville so what difference does that make of the crash was caused by the track or the wheel about fifty million dollars the National Times I don't know I put these things in a file on your desk and you never bother to read them the state government has to borrow two hundred million dollars just to repair the try I know that well don't you see the money's already been allocated they've already worked out how and when they're gonna spend it well if you guys come along and say the trains need fixing too it's gonna cost him millions of dollars more and that's money they don't have which is why they're insisting that the trains are all okay even though they're still three derailments every fortnight there's not enough money in the Treasury to fix them see the lights in it you try and blame the train without fighter I'll fight you tooth-and-nail [Music] [Music] that's almost asleep announcing hit me goodnight ask time I'll be telling the court that the first inquiry got it wrong judge Staunton in two dozen top engineers should have found that the locomotive was the major cause of the crash I can't say that I can't contradict all those experts you can if it's the truth if I prove that the locomoting was at fault then there are ways we'll have to fix all the other class 46 engines little custom means and they won't allow that I don't have the dough so they'll go after me instead I'll have a whole team of lawyers and engineering big weeks and I'll be in court waiting mr. Osmond you're a qualified mechanical electrical engineer is that right yes have you ever been employed in any railway system anyway no have you ever written many papers in connection with any railway system anywhere no have you ever done any research on class 46 locomotives like the one at Granville no but as an expert witness you would have this court believed that the engine locomotive 46:20 played a crucial part in causing the derailment yes and you based this on your examination of the locomotive and the track at gelora yes how many times did you actually examine them twice twice wouldn't bloody let her seen dozens of trains were passing over that every hour if the track alone were faulty they would have had trouble too but they didn't it was a combination of worn tracks and worn wheels that caused the death is very interesting mr. Osmond that you could reach such incredible conclusions based on two examinations oh by the way are you familiar with the standards of rail and wheel we're used in the United Kingdom No in America no in Canada no well International railway standards say that for a wheel to come off a railway track that wheel must be worn to 26 degrees yet according to you the wheels on the ground ball train were only worn to 22 is that right yes the same international standards say a train is only at risk of derailing if the rail has worn to 16 degrees but the rails are granville were worn to let's see 12 but but the speed of the engine must be looked at as well and the size now if a locomotive that big is traveling fast especially around a curb how the trains were going around that curve just as fast day and night but were they to railing mr. Osmond the wheels and the track cat brand bull were within the acceptable limits of safety everywhere the matches I want that you do come on have a where are they please one year five days no way you're gonna throw it all the way just just because of one little setback setback every we're going to win don't you say nothing more Chinese I'll never fix their British Rahway standards no one has ever explained why gran will have a not properly done locomotive every instinct I have told me I was wrong you are I mean it'd be Oh kids I've heard about international standards how can I tell him bloody Europe whether or not a trains gonna come off the rail at Granville they're twelve thousand miles away there are people here depending on you find out where their loved ones died if you give up now they'll never know that'll be almost as cruel as the train wreck you can't let them down just for one little setback trust your own instincts have you ever been wrong in the past [Music] pepper be Baris husband the coroners we spoke last month about the speed on the curve you told me the limit there was 80 they even had a sign with it did I well I got it wrong is that what I tell the families then all the people who were killed and injured she couldn't look me in the eye and tell me why it happened poor buggers who died bringing on smoking carriages but if that's mite give it up but the speed limit on all other curves in this state is 70 nice to reason for increasing it here I guess it could be one sister guess I might be wrong but after the train left Parramatta station it became an express train into the city so a pass through here and went right on there on the day the crash when it left Parramatta it was running there like three minutes late but three minutes is nothing I probably still a lot of trains here but well if this particular train was laden by a couple of minutes it'll get behind slower trains further up line and never be out of passed like driving behind a heavy truck you don't get a chance to overtake those couple of minutes or ferment the train reached town after half an hour but if it's sped all the way from the last place I remember station yet it could make up the time at loss which is why they increase the speed limit here to give it a bit of a nudge yeah the trains run light all over Sydney and I don't make them do ID around curves why would they make an exception with this one what was so special about this train that but they would risk people's lives to make sure I got to town on time [Music] [Music] thank you I hope you oh yes I'd like to get my shoe back please well normally I wouldn't bother but they're quite an expensive pair and I even with a stolen oh no not stolen oh I lost one of them in the wreck at Granville I think a policeman might still have it you see it came off when he dragged me out name please shut lock Margaret chudler missus are there um um eggshell blue five six oh I like this can I see your train ticket misses shuttle my ticket um no no I don't know taking her in carriage for carriage three just for a couple of hours and then this policeman called Gerry dragged me out but I didn't catch his last name and he didn't ask for mine and no one took any details of Mines so if he does have the shoe he won't know where to send it and all this has nothing to do with lodging a claim for compensation that train only carried 500 people so far over a thousand reckon they were on it loose the others had a sense to where if you ban dance to try and look the part look here look this is what she was wearing see she left it behind so I kept it you know in case she wanted it back there's a name Cinderella it was Margaret sir I told you 10 times and the only Margaret on our list was dead by noon then you let's just wrong she was taking a Lincoln Hospital okay one of the ambos told me I got up with the hospital I don't seem to have any record sir they say they didn't treat any of the ground victims sir I'm not crazy I talked to her for hours I just want to make sure that she's all right okay once you look like she had red hair age 20 did she tell you anything about herself well not much as she now come to think of it someone she must have said something anything anything at all she said she had a 36 inch bastard but it felt to me more like City I he left it on the table so I raced out after him I chased him right up the street and around the next corner I says are you silly pakka you forgot your weekly ticket and I handed it to him sentence of death if I hadn't have done that he would have missed that train some nights I like Brian heaven I lie in the dark and I tell him off I wouldn't have died and left him alone I have fought I fought and fought and clung to life then I drift off to sleep and dream I'm making love how's Natalie coping fine never better she sleeps she plays she laughs at cartoons and I can't stand her being near me why should Brian be gone and she be happy and may left to carry it all I could almost cope if it wasn't for those cars the white ones yeah I'm sorry what guys I kept seeing this white Holden parked outside my house with the same man sitting in it so I went outside and I asked him what he was doing there blue to the railways have hired these private detectives to watch all the Granville widows but why would they be watching you not compensation pounds didn't you know they're making them as tough to get as possible if it looks like one of us has a lover her payout gets reduced so they're photographing every male who sets foot in our houses I can't even have the parish priests around to talk to me now what the hell is this about breach fell on a train sir most probably just the coins but there's a man in this pie that looks vaguely like you now I know it couldn't be you because you were at home more sickly at least that's what you told the fire I can't explain that it's later then help me it's just arrived from HQ he was there gonna come at you for going to Granville you're only you didn't have permission there wasn't time to ask sir if I needed all the bugs I could get down there at least half a dozen fire crews down yeah it may ordered them to leave the wreck rather than pay overtime probably in a buddy side more in the next few days cuz I'll wring every paper from here to Darwin and all the TV stations to oh you wait till I tell them that the fire brigade is trying to sack me for going to Grandal excuse me I was looking for Jerry [ __ ] he might be a wall of is there anything I can do you sent them some sort of a statement yeah I'll send them some sort of statement all right three short word do you enjoy know each other yeah well um I doubt that he'd remember my face it was dark at the time and I was lying down but I left my shoe behind you see and I thought that Jerry might still have it Oh buddy maybe I've come at an old foot time could you just tell Jerry that Margaret pick up my shoe almost like an all get stop well they're trying to get me sacked can you believe that's it that's the shoe she was talking about oh my [ __ ] is to turn now you watch but if you hurry you can still catch up what that friend of yours she was here this near looking for a shoe yeah yeah city name was Margaret sure did you have a chip in hoarse voice and Hey hey wait up you must be Margaret Jerry yeah I didn't mean trying to find you but your eye you're okay and everything's I'm fine oh and just a bit of shoulder trouble hey I'm here aren't I oh it's a lovely shoe I am yeah I cleaned it up a little bit for you cause you wanted to back would you do it you know I really thought I was going to die and what you did for me down there you and the and the others it was some no I mean that's our job isn't it Wow I guess I'll be going all right will not last to meet you how could you two good luck oh god bless your cherry [Music] it's Bushmen love [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] and the final point of my case is this I don't intend any criticism of mr. Osmond but on his own admission he has no practical experience in roadways he's done no research or experimentation on this matter at all he's basing his theories on general science and theory simple geometry and so I would ask your worship to disregard mr. Osman statements about the locomotive wheels and his belief that they helped caused the accident and I would remind your worship that no expert no other expert witness has advanced this view and therefore I see no reason well well what he's gonna accept what Boris hidden evidence was he scared to take on Farquhar see that move washing up Rasta your name dishcloth house are you asking yeah have you throws it out everywhere the poorest said don't got me like that I've been around here longer than here if mr. riah blames the Train is finished with and that means I get another boss and it took me yesterday Kimi hopefully says the train wasn't to blame I hope he's damn well smart enough firstly I would like to say that no blame at all can be directed at the driver of the locomotive who was simply a victim of the roster for that day I have considered the railways submissions concerning mr. Osmonds theories and have studied the evidence closely however after weighing the matters up I do believe that mr. Osmond is correct when he says that we're on the leading wheels of the locomotive contributed to the accident I have found that the accident was caused by the following we're on the leading wheels or condition of the permanent way poor track geometry or track maintenance mister Weir's findings vary from the others on one important detail where is the judicial enquiry and the Railway Board of Inquiry blamed only the poor condition of the track for the derailment mr. weir found that the condition of the locomotives wheels was also a factor enquiry were made public in May the government announced a two hundred billion dollar program to upgrade track maintenance but that did not include locomotives the inquiries findings are concerned the state government won't get away with this I think he already has Murray even you can't stop a runaway train [Music] [Music] listen to this a detective from the fraud squad interviewed one of the victims in the hospital he said to the detective I am employed at the Sidney Turf Club my briefcase contained a considerable amount of money which belonged to the Australian Labor Party and which I was to bank he didn't ask him how much money he didn't ask why someone employed at the Turf Club should be banking for the Labour Party strange everything about that train was strange I just thought that I'd uh thank you for all your work there's not a weapon sir I certainly learned a lot about geometry I'll try and keep the three of you out of it if there are any repercussions I wouldn't sack you sir that wouldn't day according to my sources they've already started and the Secretary's grapevine is never wrong but we didn't walk away what else they say about us we did not weigh sir yeah not supposed to smoke in here sister Wahby I'm sorry what are you doing here I didn't look like that you know wasn't so neat and organized the newspaper said that you've won an award for bravery from the Queen congratulations you ever seen someone in pain I get this look I sort of look you in the eye so you can always feel what they're going through you never get that long I was all my head you don't understand I was sent in there to help them when I failed he saved over a dozen lives I should have done more I should have saved him on yeah sure I'll be that tomorrow it'll only take Horace mm-hmm I'm enjoying myself this time we went out together I knew we'd get married sure I did I can still remember the first time I saw you I came in for that interview you're on the front desk puffing away I looked at you fingers for a while so I could figure out what size engagement ring to get you and you did all that we've already even said a word to you I'm an engineer a perfect design when I see one okay lovely very nice that one's comparative gauges hmm and that one's the blend rope accident mm-hmm I've already got a file on glamour rope signal faint man got killed I worked on I remember this one happened afterwards no no they went to accidents and Glenbrook if there was nine about it see ya that crash took place on 16 January this one having a month later 15 1976 it's no big deal no got killed some group called the save our rails committee sent it to the coroner that were complaining about the state of the trends it's funny though so class 46 in that second Glenbrook accident isn't that like the tension used a grandpa [Music] nazy isn't my life goes on we cleaned all up as if nothing ever happened Lloris I can't stay long I've got to pick up the kid from karate I asked you to get me a list of derailments every train so why did you leave one out the inquiries over leaving a lion eleven months before granville another train came off the tracks at Glenbrook in the Blue Mountains he knew about it didn't you I'll Forrest done it was a class 46 just like the one at Granville the derailleur curve as well just like that one there if I had told you they would have known they would have traced that back to me did it look it was a minor accident it didn't even make the papers the class 46 engine was often coming up the array of 34 times in the last 10 years but this one was different why why was it different when the railways held an incline the inquiry found that the class 46 engine wasn't safe when you consider the other factors that tracks that it ran on the speed it was traveling they found that on curves it was potentially dangerous and had a tendency to derail the engine was heavier it was causing the tracks to spread to widen especially when the engine went round occurred do you understand the engine was pushing the tracks apart and that's why the wheels came off and that's why I'd arrived and they knew all this 11 months before ground speed on that curve was ATK's that's fast and the most curbs in this state if they knew that engine could derail at high speeds they would have done something about it change the sign told the driver reduce the speed anything but God's sake they had 11 months baris you have you haven't seen the file class of engine came off the track so many times that even the railways got concerned and after Glenbrook they decided to act they ordered that all the tracks be reinforced wherever that class of engine was ran as especially on the curves and they put gangs of men to work from let's go to Penrice as a matter of urgency what did they do on that curve up there what did they do to make it safer that well would want to look after gravel it was a main line for God's sake if they reduce the speed on that curve what do you think would have happened the accident happened and what else the train from the mountains might have got to town a bit late you don't know do you I mean you're supposed to be the expert on how things are done but you've got no bloody idea the train from the mountain can never be like that's almost an unwritten why was that train so important it's not the Train it's where it comes from is the Blue Mountains the mountains has the deciding seats in every state election what's important to the people up there is getting to work on time if the trains late they take it out on the government don't you see you've got to keep the voters happy even if it kills them it's over my dear in the end it was an accident that's why I didn't catch the track speed so high because the mountains trying had to get there on time everyone knew it everyone or about the passengers [Music] I told you will you if they found out I'd lose my job I'd probably lose my super as well boys ah maybe the other one I'll help you get around you lost a lot of muscle tissue in your legs you're gonna need something oh that's all right a few weeks of dancing will the mother ken why don't you lose muscle tissue it doesn't something look you don't understand look see see I can wiggle my toes look the cold sake [Music] [Music] come on Timmy you can do it make yourself do it [Music] miss you daddy [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
