The Cult of Chelonia, Re-Visited - Red Dead Redemption 2

a cult is a social group defined by unusual spiritual and religious beliefs sometimes as offshoots from more commonly known religions and other times they can be bizarre have strange beliefs and customs and in today's video we're going to be revisiting a cult in red dead redemption 2 that is known as chalonia [Music] the first time we can encounter a chilonian is in the chapter 2 main story mission polite society valentine's style when you head to the saints hotel to find karen who can be located in room 2b upstairs if you instead head straight past the receptionist on the downstairs level to the end of the corridor and head into the room on the right you will find a man praying out the window oh can i help you sir no wrong room no harm done join me i'm a chilonian have you read our book no i was just leaving a rather polite man who seems to be not too bothered by arthur's intrusion on his privacy the man claims to be a chilonian and asks arthur to join him naturally arthur declines the offer and moves on this is not too significant in itself but this is the first possible encounter you can have with a chilonian in the game it doesn't give us much information but it's an encounter most people wouldn't even realize it's there as in this mission you're meant to go upstairs not straight down the hallway on the ground floor the next time we encounter the chilonians is also in chapter 2 during the mission we loved once and true in which mary linton an old flame of arthurs contacts him and asks for his help it's my little brother jamie i always like jamie at least compared to the rest of them we need your help real bad little jamie's joined the chilonians that strange religious order good for him they're quite mad arthur they'll kill him you're the only person he'd listen to we learned that mary's brother jamie has joined the chilonians and apparently they're quite mad and they'll kill him also confirming what the man praying already suggested which is that chalonianism is a religious order of some description at the very least this mission then takes us up to the top of a rather delightful looking cliff to meet these chilonians shall gonna speak to the boy arthur hello son your sister is very worried the boy has chosen a path sir the path to truth well i mean his sister just wants to speak with him arthur i've chosen a path the boy has chosen a path he's chosen safety what path have you chosen sir i don't know about this nonsense let me speak to the board are you always this negative and antagonistic sir [Music] i'm not a very cultured man forgive me please i am a fool for my god and a happy one sir i bless you what do i dream about who are my heroes [Music] i have no idea um turtles yeah turtles hey you love turtles i love them too turtles um jamie knows the truth but of course you may speak with him exactly if your teachings are so great what harm can i do i'm i'm not i'm not coming with you arthur just come and speak with mary then make up your mind before we shift onto jamie i feel like that is a key part of this video let's talk about how this interaction with the chilonians plays out upon seeing us they form up into what they refer to as a shell of safety their fancy white robes bear the emblem of a turtle which is fitting as challonia is just an alternative word for the family of reptiles that comprises turtles and terrapins and tortoises considering they formed into a shell of safety when they saw an outsider approaching implies that this peculiar turtle cult has a very reclusive nature at the very least during these rituals and they formed rules of engagement with the outside world the obvious ringleader is more than happy to entertain arthur's presence which shows they aren't quite ready or trying to completely withdraw and the presence of a chilonian praying in the saints hotel in valentine suggests that while they are cautious of the world and outsiders they aren't avoiding being a part of it at least not yet now if instead of trying to approach and speak to the chilonians you shoot the leader this will happen he has fallen so we must rise the chilonians will jump off the cliff and kill themselves saying their leader has fallen so they must rise including jaime what part of worshiping turtles requires a suicide failsafe i also find it interesting that when arthur requests to speak with jaime the leader speaks on his behalf saying jaime has chosen a path and he knows the truth and he's chosen safety and jaime's only words at this point echo what this leader character is saying then the leader will question arthur's beliefs and morals and depending on whether or not you respond negatively or positively will dictate whether or not the chilonian master will let you speak with jaime or if he'll need to resort to violence to be able to do so and therefore makes decisions on behalf of his followers including in this instance jamie regardless of how you go about conducting yourself here jaime will attempt to run away on horseback and you will have to chase him this is the only mission in the game that features jamie gillis and in it we learn a lot about the type of individual he is he's a young man he's impressionable and perhaps more so than the average young man he doesn't come across as especially bright and the shelonian master was able to manipulate him by telling him what he wanted to hear because he wanted to believe that something good would come his way one day and his reason for buying into this cult is they were nice to him which is something he doesn't get as far as his father is concerned because as arthur puts it he's a bully and a coward i feel like nothing highlights just how fragile jaime's mental state is than the end of this chase please arthur i'm a man now i've found something a calling you're just a kid i'm making a big mistake i'm not taking advice from you you're an outlaw you leave me alone they're good people i'm warning you arthur morgan leave me alone please kid put that gun down i warned you arthur i'm i'm gonna i don't wanna live anymore kid just calm down leave me alone [Music] now calm down let's go see your sister okay okay it's okay kid have i been a terrible fool arthur i don't know i don't know enough about it one thing i do know there ain't no shame in looking for a better world jamie also admits that he gave the chilonians money though really you'd fall for that they were very nice to me they're decent i'm sure please tell me you didn't give them any money of course i did they rely on charitable donations jesus jamie come on so chalonia relies on charitable donations to function and those donations come from its members and if jaime is anything to judge the caliber of member by then these are young impressionable yet able-bodied young men who believe in the teachings of chalonia because they want to their lives are unsatisfying and they need to believe in something to make it worthwhile i just wanted to believe that there might be something good coming my way one day guess that's dead in the water with the turtles shut up that being said nothing really indicates they're manipulated too heavily besides however a conversation you can have with a camper whilst exploring the open world confirms this is the type of character that this cult preys on past six months or so i ain't been around many people regular folks at least ain't sure have you heard of a group called the shalonians i guess you could call it a religion obsessed with turtles which maybe should have struck me stranger sooner well now i know you wouldn't believe it folk always say i'm too trusted i mean i don't know you from adam and here you are sitting at my fire anyway i'm more or less handing my life over to them i met a very persuasive fella in santa me anderson's name was and he caught me at a bad time oh yeah hell of a thing right it's that i i've been giving over to some poor living real poor living kind of behavior the devil himself would be ashamed of they promised me safety salvation paradise all their appealing to a fellow like me got to the point where i'd given them every cent i had and i was ready to follow them off a cliff i just got out in time maybe it was the turtles or maybe it was just i didn't have the spine to go through with it all seems ridiculous now looking back the things we'll do for answers huh in this conversation we get a lot of interesting detail this man handed over every cent he had and was just about ready to follow them off of a cliff which sounds like a metaphor until you remember that it doesn't really take much for chilonians to do that literally and the man says he didn't have the spine to go through with it so outside of extraordinary circumstances jumping off a cliff is a part of chalonium beliefs and so apparently worshiping turtles and then jumping off a cliff will lead you to paradise he tells us how he was introduced to the chilonians and well via a persuasive fellow named anders in santini and lo and behold in a park in the city you can find a neatly dressed man holding a pamphlet with a table next to him with more of that very same pamphlet and next to him there is a sign that says chalonia awaits you the future of a better safer america and he's spouting total nonsense this must be anders so let's go hear what he has to say do you want to be safe the answer is sir [Music] it's time to be saved it's time to be safe you one of you please take a pamphlet hello sir can i interest you in shalonianism i don't know can you yes well i hope so it is a fascinating religion that was taught to a very wise master about a hundred years ago but a land not very far from here take a book please okay you've made a wonderful choice it is a religion of safety a religion made by gods who understood what life is not what life could be but what it is it is very dangerous but with chilonianism it can be safe well it's all in this book am i boring you ah a little i'm sorry have a wonderful day for a while anders will continue to preach hear the truth and rejoice for you are saved and already in paradise if only you had the wisdom to understand it jellonia america they are the same thing if savages could prosper here how much better shall the white man do in this sacred no more kings we are all kings our prophet told us this 100 years ago let us pray together and give thanks for our redemption the redemption of this sacred place chalonia this is chalonia we are all chilonians embrace your protector embrace all that is sacred in this place seek and ye shall find and what ye shall find is the great shell and the great shell is chalonia and this is chelonia the greatest shell of all the two seas and the isthmus and the frozen north thus we are safe to love safe to seek the greatest wisdom and the greatest wisdom will be revealed to us that revelation states unequivocally that i that we all are of chalonia thus we are all chilonians this is the land of the great turtle and that is how we will achieve lives of 200 years or longer like turtles that is truth hear it and weep a hundred years ago a few lucky pilgrims left for chelonia now we can all go and join their descendants in the woods our master is calling us he will now be 153 years old and is ready for us i intend to make the journey i hope you will travel with me seek and find the answers in shalonia the future of a better america a safe future we need to be safe we must be safe europeans die every day so do animals neither nature nor the ways of the old world have made us safe we must learn a new way and that way is chalonia it's very simple have a book eventually after spouting his drivel he does move on anyway anders gives us a pamphlet that reads as follows and buckle up it's a long one read here in a full and impartial account of the great teachings of our master and the discovery of chalonia and preparation for the great journey praised by anders helgeson blackwater printed for 1892. it is humbly hoped that every impartial reader will take these messages to heart and not be filled with knavery or folly or trepidition or jest while he or she sucks but instead listen to the great teachings of our master we traveled across great oceans fighting scurvy to arrive in this paradise for it is not indiana it is not america it is cholonia you may ask where is chalonia you are already here it is time to prepare for the journey to shalonia we are already there but how does one do so shoe the horses prepare the preserves tend to the animals and wagon prepare for the journey we are going to chilonia when you see a [ __ ] a wicked neighbor or a drunkard do you fear for your safety do you fear the poor are you poor are you afraid of being poor we can be safe we can all be safe safe and perfect thanks to the wisdom of the master be it known that great evil lurks in many places in a dark hollow in a woman's heart in the eyes of a bird of prey but we bring truth to light and remove the dark evil from our hearts so that we can be safe thanks to our master we can be that bird and prey we can hold an egg up to a candle and know if life exists or if it is breakfast come feast in chalonia where is heaven where is chalonia it is here there are several people who cannot believe that very truth but it was handed down over 100 years ago to our great prophet and it is known that anything old is true ask the very old you will see this to be true unless they are too old and unable to hear and will become with the worms soon enough and no longer be a burden on the family do not become unable to hear all parts of the account are true and the strictest regard shall be held for the truth just as we know it to be true that this land is our heaven and the two oceans are our shells listen to those shells and you will hear the oceans that we sailed carry the shells with you one in each hand and show everyone that you have the shells of truth and should anyone not believe you they won't follow to cholonia and will most likely live a mediocre life in squalor that shell of truth can make you safe you need to be safe life can be safe now is the time to stop endangering your loved ones and make them safe i implore you your children and loved ones are in great danger would you throw your wife off a cliff of course this has never crossed your mind has it not then how could you subject them to such peril safety above all else thanks to the providence of our almighty master 100 years ago our great chilonian master led pilgrims across the lanahasi into the wilderness most survived the journey they found a great place of safety and thanks to his teachings now we can join them in paradise and eat fruits and nuts and slow-cook creatures into delicious stews anger mischief revenge they simply do not exist in chalonia america can rise to where it was always supposed to be one hundred years ago our master four saw it he told all the listen for paradise provides and we are it's tease the teats of shelonia await you do not refuse it lest you go hungry and your mother chides you remember these things and tell everyone at the teats and the shells let us pray together and give thanks for our redemption a place of safety a place of wisdom a place for the selected a place where people stay because they have heard the ocean that lives between the two shells and those that don't will most likely perish by drowning or swimming during the wrong moon cycle take this message i have told you and spread the word speak it before a multitude of spectators so they may come to chelonia with us as chalonians and we will rejoice then as we do now amen and amen and amen give thanks for the shells please show this pamphlet to your friends and neighbors contributions and requests for correspondence can be sent to chilonia house boston massachusetts obviously a very confusing message that isn't straight to the point at all however it keeps rehashing the point of safety you need to be safe you must be safe chiseling its way into the brain of anyone who reads this pamphlet life is a dangerous thing and challonia is the answer only through chalonia can you be saved the pamphlet is saying over and over again this is the correct path and you must follow it lest you be condemned to a life of mediocrity and you ascend to this chalonian life by jumping off a cliff and dying apparently a great chalonian master did this exact thing a hundred years ago and the pamphlet says this is true because all things old are true unless you're talking about the things that old people say so unless it's real the pamphlet blatantly contradicts itself giving the less educated reader the impression that they aren't wise enough to understand what any of this means but trust in chalonia because the master knows if you wish to seek further understanding you'd have to join up and at that point the manipulation would begin arguably rather culty now the pamphlet claims that the original shilonian master lived over a hundred years ago is there anything in the game that will suggest the chilonians have been around for a little while the answer to this question is yes north east of fort wallace you can find a structure known as the mysterious hill home this is an abandoned house that is sort of built into the hill if not protruding a little bit with grass growing on the roof this structure bears the symbol of a turtle one not dissimilar to the design of the emblem on the chilonian's robes the windows are smashed and boarded up and everything outside is in a similar state of disrepair leading me to believe that this building has not been occupied in a long time marked on a tree outside you can find strange writings it's speculated by many that this means leader x and it's mirrored to be a little confusing which could possibly suggest that the mysterious hill home was the home of the chelonians leader or it could just be something that happens to be in the same spot that means something else entirely as this is not the only location where you can find these tree symbols also the mysterious hill home has another function as a reference to lord of the rings but the turtle symbol does make me think this spot certainly has something to do with the chilonians as well and if you wanted to come across as an all-wise leader why not live in a mysterious hill home above all else visiting this site proves that arthur morgan has a greater drawing ability than john anyway to conclude this part thanks to the turtle drawn on the hill home i like to think it implies that this was once a refuge for chilonians but isn't any more so maybe they have been around for a while and the pamphlet isn't just the bollocks made up by anders in the epilogue if you ride out into new austin you can come across a camp with some interestingly dressed dead bodies they wear blue and white robes a color not dissimilar to the chilonians though unfortunately i can find no turtle iconography here there is nothing on any of the bodies that give us a better idea of what these people are or what they were doing these could just be some smurf-looking pyjamas for all we know nor is there anything really that suggests their cause of death maybe dehydration starvation at least one died violently by the looks of it but beyond that there's nothing really to go by though when i approached i was attacked by a cougar but these corpses appear to have been here for a little bit and besides from the similarities in robes which are vague above all else it's simply the colours there's nothing that suggests these people actually archaelonians however it's been commonly accepted that they probably were however in game design things like this typically tend to be done deliberately so i suppose that's an argument now in the epilogue if you return to sundane to the very same spot where you met anders helgerson you can meet him again as john marston do you want to be safe the answer is a new master has been found he's leading our people to chalonia rejoice hey mister how are you sir okay a great and wonderful event is happening in chelonianism it is quite wonderful can i tell you more sure why not the world is coming to an end i am so happy a new master has arrived and he is leading those who know to safety i plan on joining him myself oh he's in the hills near granite pass it's not too late i've been trying to warn everyone but no one will listen believe me safety is all that we have okay good luck at the spot where we once found the chilonians with jamie gillis we can now join the chilonians as they attempt to escape what they refer to as the end of the world as a new master will lead them to chalonia we alone shall be saved hope you're all doing all right are you lost friend follow me sir follow me together we can be safe follow me with this shell i am safe from all things [Music] we shall not be defeated we shall be saved follow me and be saved follow me follow me follow me to challenge [Music] [Music] the chilonians jumped to their deaths so yeah let's join them i guess falling off the cliff dressed like a ninja turtle the chalonian master is dead his shell broken and who is this master it's the same guy we met as arthur morgan eight years prior and therefore we know without a doubt the chilonians believe that the only way for them to ascend tuchelonia to live the lives that they want is to die believing that jumping off a cliff to physical death will bring them to a new world a sinister fate that arthur morgan saved jaime gillis from and everything points to chelonianism being widespread within the world of red dead redemption 2 and its law this is a massive turtle loving suicide cult that manipulates easily misled young people into tragically cutting their lives short mary linton was right the chilonians are quite mad and that makes them very dangerous and a turtle shell cannot protect those who get too deeply invested in this crazy religion so if you ever find yourself witnessing
