by the way I'm sure you've noticed as I have noticed pretty much all the stories I don't understand it at all take place that like I cover take place in small towns so you know what that means everybody lives in a small town blood thirsty either that order really is nothing else to do or just kill someone West Wendover is interesting because it's only home to about four and a half thousand people but also home to five casinos and a cannabis dispensary so the whole point of the existence of West Wendover because the name isn't even original is literally for people out of sage to come Gamble and put I I know wheat guys to do have some Mary J Mary Jane that's why that's all that's the only point of the town and you know what I say to that fair play to you now let's go back to 2011 when our story takes place well really 1994 because that is when Michaela Mickey costanzo was born Michaela was the daughter of Celia and Teddy born in May of 94. she grew up in West Wendover with her sisters Christina Jennifer came and Amy and she was a great student and a star athlete a big-hearted young lady just setting out into the world she was always there for her sisters for her many friends helping out with homework projects helping you out as much as pulling pranks on you which he was always mad for and she wasn't only the editor of the school paper she was also on the basketball team and track team in fact that's exactly where she was on March 3rd 2011 after school going for running she was going for a bit of an L run kind of around and maybe maybe a few times so after doing or doing some laps cleaning up she was headed home as she would usually get a ride home after school but that day it fell true her sister who usually collected her older sister she was out of town but like stanzo's house is only like a mile down the road so it wasn't a hell of a walk and so 16 year old Michaela Costanza was was expected home not much later than usual but it reached much later than usual with no sign of her as that day turned to evening Michaela hadn't come home her mom called you know to check on her see what the scale was and so you know phone rang like normal but they kept ringing like her mom was expecting so he was expecting to hear a familiar voice at any moment but she didn't it kept ringing until it rang out thinking that was weird Celia then about a minute later tried to call Michaela again but this time the phone didn't ring at all it just it was as if somebody pressed the console button when she started calling afternoon evening night no Michaela calls were made and didn't give any answers drives were done hopping into cars hoping to see if Mickey was walking down the road happy as always that site was unseen Michaela was reported missing that evening to the West Wendover police the search began you know the police they searched her in town they still turned down nothing they went to the school and by all accounts she had left she had left the school like normal you know left to go home but somewhere between the school and our home she never made it students who are ran the high school were spoken with her boyfriend Javier he was questioned how she been acting lately I don't know she's been acting pretty fine like if she's if something was wrong she had a van she's not one of those girls that hides her feelings like like puts her emotions in her and Michaela's last known contacts her phone records they were they were gathered to see with who to see who she'd been speaking with you know that evening and they found then all of a sudden stopped but to whom well it turned out to be a friend of hers a Cody Patton Cody was someone people around Michaela were all too familiar with and had been since she was a tyke Cody was Michaela's oldest friend and they remained somewhat close to this day he was two years older than Michaela he was on the football team and someone who looked out for her she was like a little sister to him now Cody was known to have a temper he could add wood alternate between being you know the kindest lady I'll ever meet to being an [ __ ] this would lead him to into fights with a lot of people including his own parents and in March of 2011 he was actually living with his fiancee Tony frado and her parents they were Mormons and in fact Cody was so happy with them he converted so Cody was all then what were you talking to her about come on tell us do tell the last time you seen her was last night and that was weird she was with somebody just so I thought it was her boyfriend because it was a short her boyfriend being a Javier yeah do you have any questions for me yeah finally he said he was at the school you know the same time she was he saw her he started speaking to her out the front of the school but booty time he said he saw her with someone a mysterious person now to quote Cody a small Mexican but kodetsu Cody thought it was her boyfriend heavier at first but it wasn't who is this no one knew and the search for Michaela costanzo continued you know starting in this small town of West Wendover and spreading out into the great desert Beyond and there's a hell of a lot of desert Beyond now this was two days after Mickey was last seen and a Searcher noticed fresh tire marks in the desert this was off the Beaten Track and so this this Searcher thinking maybe this is worth a goo or perhaps a gander and so they began following these fresh tire marks going essentially off into the middle of nowhere very unusual for these to be where they were and as they followed them they noticed on the ground blood further on under the brush that had been trampled on amount a suspicious man the police were called and digging a little a body before any identification was done they had a pretty good idea that this was the missing 16 year old a missing girl a shallow grave and now a community anxiously waiting for an identification a 16 year old girl was last seen walking out of West Wendover High School on Thursday an organized search for her was halted this afternoon when police announced the discovery of the Grave about five miles outside of outside of Wendover a Searcher looking near these railroad tracks west of town found what officials are describing as a shallow grave incredibly tragic that this would happen someone had taken her out into the desert and yeah Michaela had been beaten and stabbed to death it had been vicious she'd been stabbed in the face and neck many times over her hands had been zip tied making it appear like she'd been abducted and with blood on the ground well abducted from the school on our way home taken here murdered and buried in the desert but who had taken her who would do this you know to uh to Michaela who kind of everybody just liked she was popular well she had been in the school that afternoon like normal had left the locker room and the CCTV didn't show her with some mysterious man no she appeared to have left with Cody Patton or at least was in the same part of the school as him in fact it appeared she had left through the back door again Cody only other person in that area and Cody had said he saw her and that was weird did you have any no sir sorry if I get a more sure it kind of upsets me that people ask me um so who do you think might have been involved everybody likes her I mean there's nobody off the top of my mind that has anything wrong with that so why would someone want to hurt her then no idea she was good to everyone [Music] and even if she did do something she always write it or wrongs no matter what Cody once again and yes and he but he reiterated the same story he had told on he was questioned the first time so now you've got CCTV that differs from the story he was telling and some mysterious man who kind of doesn't really make sense and then you gotta have a lot of calls from Michaela to Cody right around the time she disappears Cody's dad then came in and this was the dad he did not get on well with and did not live with the detectives could pretty much hear Cody's dad roaring at him from outside the room they also recorded this when it became pretty clear more information was was coming yes I started fixing us now as much kid what you did it was pain it was Cody I don't want to abandon you at all okay you're gonna do it through okay Cody said this is what happened he bumped into her outside of school and he offered to give her give her a ride home right as her usual uh ride wasn't there his sister wasn't there so he said here listen hop in I'll drop you home then in the car while they're driving he said Michaela out of the blue demanded that Cody dumped his fiancee Tony frado and get with him even though Michaela already had a boyfriend anyway Javier but okay and so when he you know ah that idea she went ape [ __ ] he said then somehow jeez I blocked out their Lots they ended up in the middle of the desert outside his car she pushed him he said well Uno reverse card and pushed her back she fell she cracked her head off a rock and she started seizing up fell down and hit her head hey she just laid there and was looking at the sky and like her eyes started to turn black and I didn't know what to do I just sat there and she started to like shake and seize then well I guess that's that he got a shovel and started dating as you do however she was still seizing so he then hit her with the shovel oh and that didn't work he got out a knife and slit her trout instead of going for help he then buried her in the desert Cody Patton was arrested and charged with first degree murder he's have arrested a classmate of a 16 year old West Wendover girl for her murder Sam Penrod is in West Wendover tonight where Candlelight vigil was held in that girl's honor Sam well when students arrive to school today Bruce they were told that one of their own classmates has been arrested for Michaela Costanza's murder so they're not only dealing with her death but also the fact that one of their own is now accused of her murder and tonight the community gathered here at West Wendover High School to grieve together and then students their parents and people from Wendover filled the gymnasium of West Wendover High to pay tribute to 16 year old Michaela costanzo her friends called her Mickey memories were shared tears were shed and words of comfort were spoken to our family hey he was admitting to it but that doesn't make any sense at all but he was gonna go on trial regardless his dream of joining the Marines over his coming nuptials well they were still on though Tony she stood by her man hermano who didn't seem to be telling the truth at all I mean he said he slitter troached to end her misery to put her out of her misery but she was stabbed all over the face on the neck and it didn't seem like she'd been hit with a shovel it seemed like she'd been beaten all over some other instrument and then you have a zip tie her hands were found zip tied this isn't matching his story at all of it being an accident and he overreacted and instead of you know calling an ambulance or taking her back into town just decided to kill her and then cover it up there was no explanation for a lot of his story Tony though she she sent her future husband love letters she visited as often as she could she called all the time I know when Tony was asked um your boyfriend fiancee any incited why he might have done what he did people when asked that occur Tony would would give him a Curt no it was one month later that Tony walked into Cody Patton's attorney's office and asked him to make if she could make a statement she only wore PJs she brought nothing with her as if she expected not to be leaving and she had a story to tell one that was different from Cody's about what really happened that day odd though that she went to her fiance's lawyer not to the police maybe she thought she would get protection she didn't because he's not her [ __ ] lawyer but her story was this after school that day Cody texted her simply saying I got her then Tony got in the car the three of them then drove off to the desert then this happened on the car or whatever so I just got out to see what happened there now um Michaela was on the ground she wasn't really moving at that point [Music] [Applause] and then we were kind of standing there deciding what what do we do we don't know what we had just done but I remember like like legs and lots of clothes Cody started digging and together they started hitting her they started stabbing her Tony would even hold he had even held down Michaela's legs while Cody slit her throat open so she was saying they'd done it together kind of out of nowhere like it wasn't believed yeah up until this point now she's kind of like whoops I was there too Lads don't want him to get all the credit but the obvious question is was she bullshitting to try and help him even though she wasn't helping him she was only implicating herself he'd still kill her or was that was that what Cody had done was Cody covering for her also that text Cody had sent the I got her it was never recorded in fact texts between Tony and Cody were never recovered for that day so what they had been talking about if this had been planned or what no no one knows it's in the death of a West Wendover High School student have led to the arrest of another person in connection with the murder police say 19-year-old Tony frotto a senior here at West Wendover High School was not a suspect in the murder of Michaela costanzo in past interviews with authorities she denied having any involvement in the crime West Wendover police arrested frotto last night until now her fiancee Cody Patton who was also a senior at the school was the only suspect Tony too was arrested uncharged with murder but why the [ __ ] had they done this Tony came from a loving family of Mormons they never showed her anything but unconditional love she was a quiet nice kid growing up she was a child beauty queen her now they were both going to go on trial for Michaela's murder with no apparent motive for it and Tony indicating herself for no reason at all other than perhaps guilt I guess though it was Cody Patton's dad who brought Tony to where she confessed now maybe he wanted her to try and save his son or she just couldn't do it with her own parents around now when all of us came out Tony's parents would say listen the Tony she's an abused woman Nico Cody's a real bastard he had full control over poor olds houseplant and you know she she wasn't in control whatever she did she was forced to do by Cody which is kind of like come on you just this bull like obviously this is like a [ __ ] kind of thing I'm not saying that doesn't happen but in this case you're clearly just like trying to negate any responsibility she has at all regardless both Tony frado and Cody Patton could get the death penalty for the brutal murder of Michaela costanzo and even their stories still had gaps in them why was she zip tied that's not this happened we just went out it was an accident we went for a road trip and then we ended up killing her this is an Abduction the zip ties only mean taking somewhere it's taking someone somewhere they don't want to go against their will before a death penalty trial Could Happen Cody would plead guilty to the murder of Michaela accepting a deal that would give him life in prison but taking away the death penalty Tony too would accept a deal but now she had a slightly different story Cody was the one this is all I am he he sunk this idea up you know he just wanted to kill Mikhail he had known Michaela since he was a baba you know and um she kind of just like pissed him off really you know her voice annoyed him she was just an annoying person to be around so he said Hey listen she's she's gotta go I'm a person to tell the truth and deep down I wanted people to know the truth because I knew I knew Cody wasn't going to come forward and tell the completion so he texted uh Tony saying he got her Tony got in the car the tree of them drove off and while driving he texted uh Tony Yin saying I'm gonna kill her only Cody attacked her this time Tony was saying that uh you know she just stood there watched in horror as her fiance brutally murdered Michaela and if she did do anything at all she was forced to because she feared she would be next all I remember is him pulling her hair back and I went up and he'd meet her in the face I remember looking up at Cody and him telling Henry with the shovel hit him with the shovel and so I hit her in the back of the shoulder with the shovel and then I remember going up and holding her legs down so she stopped kicking and then all of a sudden her legs went completely still and she wasn't moving and not freaking out slide backed off and jumped up and walked off a little bit she had looked up at Cody and after my still here am I still alive and she was saying all this as part of a plea deal I bet the person she claimed to love you know the person she visited in prison wrote Love Letters to and now it's like oh yeah yes under the bus you go you can't tell me to this day why this happened he never told you that no but little Miss plant she had something she shouldn't have and the police found it she skipped a diary shouldn't have kept diary because you know especially if you're not if you're gonna it kills me no good idea generally and in the diary she wrote about her love for Cody but also her her insecurities her feelings of inadequacy her fears that Cody was gonna leave her for another woman and her jealousy of any woman Cody ever talked to maybe women whose name began like you know like Michaela so she was very jealous Cody wasn't the controlling one Tony was Cody couldn't talk to another woman if if Cody was seen talking to another woman or our Tony found out about it she would hit the roof that at least provided a real motive for Michaela's murder to try and solve the mystery a motive of Envy out of jealousy of bitterness and ultimately a rage because the whole thing about this story is what happened to Michaela the stabs to the face into the neck the Abduction the beating was done but rage would be the only way to explain it and Cody would have another story his final story they'd been in school walking down to Corridor Tony called Michaela a [ __ ] and so you know getting any [ __ ] his grill all benicia's Grill then Cody said take this outside right wrestle sort it out be it that way good old-fashioned way both said yeah hell yeah let's do it then somehow it's like Star Wars over here with the somehows used to explain plot holes they ended up in the desert the tree of them and then again pretty much you know he accidentally pushed Michaela over she cracked her head then Tony seizes her opportunity runs up pits her stabs her slits slits next Cash's checks he was basically saying oh Tony killed killed her so literally this this couple who were claiming to be all that each other in love with each other like they did it they did it though they didn't clearly not during a Jail visit Cody told him jealousy drove his girlfriend Tony frotto to kill Michaela costanzo either he was trying to date or she was trying to date him again and frustrating Tona it's an accusation Tony's mother denies saying her daughter is innocent and the truth will come out authorities have confessions from both teens but their versions are different Tony said she hit Michaela with the shovel Cody says he did after Michaela accidentally fell and hit her head on a rock Cody's attorney says those confessions are all prosecutors have to go on Cody was ultimately sentenced to life without parole I'm sorry [Music] Patton said Mickey was always good to him and everything he could ask for in a friend but costanzo's family begged judge Daniel Pappas to show no mercy I want him to walk into that Penitentiary and when he leaves it 'll be in the Box this match never see the light of day he struck my daughter's wife there's no reason there's no why so justification carrying out this murder in such a vicious man attempting to cover up this mirror our heart attacks but when you pulse it irrational immature teenage mind you always have the power and the ability to Mr Ben to stop the wheels of this murder that you put into motion your blood runs cold in 2012 Tony pleaded guilty to second degree murder that she was forced to do whatever had been done by Cody and killed her Tony frano walked out of the courtroom in tears after that emotional confession to the judge her family says she's sorry for what she did and taking the plea deal was the right thing to do it's a big burden lifted off of her I think so we're pleased with her decision and she was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of Parole in 18 years what version of the story is the truth we will never know but it seems like to family and friends that they both have been bullying Michaela for years every time Michaela would walk down the hallway saying [ __ ] under their breath pushing her that kind of thing one of Michaela's closest friends would say that Michaela had said multiple times but but they had been trying to get her alone they had been constantly try hey Michaela come for a ride with us you know wink wink we'll show you a good time Michaela always turned them down until perhaps on this day she didn't have a choice when she got zip tied and dragged into Cody's truck that zip tie has never been explained by either Tony or Cody this had to have been an abduction an abduction from the school and a murder of course all you hear from these bastards is [ __ ] why did you hit her with a shovel Cody told me he's like just do it it's okay just do it and everything and I was terrified I didn't know what to do horrifying thing that I've ever experienced in my life I would
