Can I just say how refreshing it is that CRA offered us 3 very different images of Asian women? I know that all three of them are very thin and light-skinned and fit somewhat neatly into conventional beauty standards, but we still have Constance as the approachable, girl-next-door-ish beauty with brains, Gemma as the intimidatingly, otherwordly gorgeous and sophisticated, and Awkwafina as the quirky pretty with a loud, brash personality. They're perfectly cast for their intended roles.

As an Asian woman, I don't think I've ever seen Asian women portrayed in those lights in Western media before. They are archetypes that white women get to embody time and time again, but never WOC, and I'm grateful that Kevin Kwan and Jon Chu have crafted these characters to be our Asian female role models. Kevin Kwan wrote these female characters with such loving admiration, and celebrated their beauty without ever objectifying them. Jon framed them as heroes and sidekicks and villains, rather than sexual objects or hapless girls needing to be rescued. CRA isn't perfect, but it's a start.
