[Music] facts first presents the controversial scene that took The Beverly Hillbillies off the air The Beverly Hillbillies was one of the most popular TV shows of the 60s the show revolved around the Clampett family who were very poor until they struck gold they became millionaires and tried to fit in Beverly Hills the show aired on CBS from 1962 to 1971 today it can still be seen on television somewhere in reruns if you are a fan of the show you might think you know everything about it but here are a few unknown secrets of the show that's become a classic The Beverly Hillbillies was one of the 20 most watched shows of all time it even earned a few Emmy nominations despite this critics hated it the New York Times called it strained and unfunny Variety magazine called it painful to sit through one of the worst reviews said if television is America's vast wasteland the hillbillies must be Death Valley you that one hurt fortunately the audience disagreed and on TV that's all that really matters buddy Ebsen was Jed Clampett on the show before The Beverly Hillbillies he was a successful dancer and vaudeville performer he even shared the stage with greats like Shirley Temple and Judy Garland but he landed the role of the Tin Man In The Wizard of Oz in fact but he had to drop out he suffered from an allergic reaction to the aluminum metallic makeup that he had to wear he also blamed his future lung problems on that movie Nancy Kulp played Jane Hathaway the scheming banker mr. Drysdales secretary when the show ended she decided to give up acting man try her hand to politics she ran for the United States House of Representatives from Pennsylvania but she lost buddy Ebsen didn't like Nancy at all when she was running for office he was very vocal about their tenuous relationship he even aired a damaging radio ad against Nancy which led to her losing the election Nancy never forgave buddy for his betrayal the mansion where the show was filmed was an actual bel-air mansion unlike most of the shows at that time the Beverly Hillbillies was not filmed on a soundstage Paul Henning the creator of the show paid only $500 per season to film the show in that mansion which was very cheap considering what they were getting arnold Kirkeby was the man who owned the mansion where the show was filmed sadly a few months before the show aired he was killed in a plane crash his widow agreed to allow the show to keep shooting at the mansion but only on one condition she wanted the show to keep the address of the mansion a secret well it wasn't long before people figured it out anyway and they would gather outside the gates hoping to catch a glimpse of the cast the show's theme song is titled The Ballad of Jed Clampett country-western singer Jerry Scoggins sang it the song also featured the bluegrass duo flats and Scruggs the song was so catchy that it landed at number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1962 Maximilian Adelbert Max Baer Jr he achieved fame when he landed the role of the dim-witted Jethro Bodine he was lucky to land that role but he said that it also led him to being typecast as a dimwit he believes the playing Jethro actually killed his acting career after the show ended he landed a few minor roles but eventually he turned his focus to writing directing and producing Western star John Wayne had a cameo on The Beverly Hillbillies once it was on an episode in the fifth season called the Indians are coming in the episode granny kept mentioning how she wished that John Wayne would show up and help fight the Injuns well eventually to granny's the lights John Wayne does show up for his role in the film he accepted a fifth of bourbon for his appearance Sharon Tate was an up-and-coming actress when she landed a role on The Beverly Hillbillies she starred in 15 episodes as the bank teller Janet traigo sadly her career and life were cut short when members of the Manson Family brutally murdered her and her friends but she was killed she had recently married director Roman Polanski and she was eight months pregnant with their child Ellie Mae was Jed Clampett critter lovin daughter she was played by Donna Douglas she was not the princess type but she was very popular due to her popularity Mattel featured her character as a Barbie doll the doll even came with a slingshot the company didn't have Donna's permission however to use her likeness so she filed a lawsuit against them in 2011 the case was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount in January 2015 Max Baer Jr remember he played Jethro he became the last surviving actor from the show when Donna Douglas passed away he became the last he always had dreams of creating a series of Beverly Hillbillies themed restaurants hotels and casinos in Nevada fortunately those plans never came to fruition the show was very popular during its run and it inspired plenty of cookbooks they were all of course inspired by granny's cooking not only could you get granny's recipe for fried possum but the cookbook also included photographs and character profiles when the Beverly Hillbillies ended buddy Ebsen went on to play Barnaby Jones in the CBS detective series about a father and his daughter-in-law who run a private detective firm in Los Angeles in the 1993 movie adaptation of the show buddy played Barnaby Jones even though the critics weren't raving about the show at the time it didn't stop it from becoming a big success in 1962 just three weeks after the show premiered it took the number one spot in the TV ratings that was the fastest rise to number one in television history the show managed to stay at number one - for two years people wonder about the controversial scene that took The Beverly Hillbillies off the air well it wasn't actually one scene it was the entire show despite the show's popularity CBS exact Fred Silverman canceled the show in 1971 he claimed that there were too many rural type shows on the network at the time he was worried about the network being typecast for that niche in the market the Clampetts called their car the jalopy it was a rundown 1921 oldsmobile model 46 roadster the jalopy may not have been an official actor but it did play a very important role in the series in 1976 it was donated to a museum for the bicentennial celebration it's even been shipped to England a few times when buddy Ebsen retired from acting he wrote a novel it was called Kelley's quest and it was a collection of poems that reveal a young girl's journey through joy and heartbreak along the way she learned some very important lessons but he published the book himself and in 2001 it made it to number three on the Los Angeles Times paperback bestseller list in 1993 The Beverly Hillbillies movie was released it was expected to do well since the show was so popular unfortunately the fans did not accept the new actors and roles that were well established during a series the movie ended up tanking critics said it failed to capture the charm of the original series it was described as being one of the worst movies of this or any year Paul Henning came up with the idea for the original show while visiting Civil War sites in the south with his mother-in-law in 1959 he wondered what it'd be like to take one of the southerners that he met and then placed them in the middle of a more modern sophisticated community well that's how the idea for the show was born the highest-rated episode of the entire series was in season three it was titled Hedda hoppers Hollywood the episode reached number 62 on TV guides 100 greatest episodes of all time list in 1997 the original name of the show was the hillbillies of beverly hills and the pilot episode was called the Clampetts strike oil it was the only show that used the original name from the second episode on the show became The Beverly Hillbillies during the show's run there was a crazy rumor that Ellie Mae's Donna Douglas was older than Irene Ryan who played granny people said that a lot of makeup helped granny to look older while the truth was that Irene was 31 years older than Donna but he said that he couldn't believe people would be so naive to believe the rumors there were plenty of animals on the show because the character of Ellie Mae loved her critters break in was the man who trained the animals on the set he also provided the show with everything the animals needed do you have a favorite character from The Beverly Hillbillies how about a favorite episode tell us about it in the comments and subscribe for more you
