>> WE'RE BACK IN SAN FRANCISCO FOR THE WILD CARD MATCH BETWEEN THE PACKERS AND THE 49ers. THE LAST FIVE MEETINGS, GREEN BAY HAS JUMPED OFF TO EARLY LEADS IN THE FIRST HALF OF EVERY MATCH -- 21-0, 6-0, 21-0, 10, AND 16. BUT THE 49ers HAVE WON THE TOSS. AND THEY ARE ALL PSYCHED UP. THE PLAYOFF ATMOSPHERE IS HERE. IN FACT, THIS FEELS LIKE A CHAMPIONSHIP GAME ALMOST. >> WELL, AND YOU'RE SO USED TO SEEING THESE TWO TEAMS IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP. MAYBE THAT'S WHY. YOU KNOW, WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT WHEN THIS SEASON STARTED THAT THE WILD CARD GAME WOULD BE THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ers AGAINST THE GREEN BAY PACKERS? >> WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT A LOT OF THINGS? WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE ARIZONA PLAYING MINNESOTA? >> YOU KNOW SOMETHING? ONE OF THESE TWO TEAMS HAD PLAYED IN 9 OUT OF THE LAST 10 CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES, SO THAT'S WHY IT FEELS LIKE ONE. >> [ Chuckling ] I GUESS YOU'RE RIGHT. RYAN LONGWELL TO KICK IT OFF, AND McQUARTERS, WHO RETURNED A PUNT 72 YARDS LAST WEEK AGAINST THE RAMS, WILL GET A CHANCE. AND HE'S GOT AN ALLEY. McQUARTERS. TRIPPED UP AT ABOUT THE 28, AND LET'S LOOK AT THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ers OFFENSIVE UNIT. LED, OF COURSE, BY LEFT-HANDED STEVE YOUNG. LED THE NFL WITH 36 TOUCHDOWN PASSES. IN FRONT OF HIM, DEESE, RAY BROWN, DALMAN, KEVIN GOGAN, AND KIRK SCRAFFORD. GARRISON HEARST WILL START. HE'S NURSING A TENDER HAMSTRING. EDWARDS IN FRONT OF HIM. OWENS, RICE. AND CLARK IS THE TIGHT END. AND HERE IS STEVE YOUNG GOING TO WORK. FLUSHED OUT OF THE POCKET. INTENDED FOR HEARST. AND LET'S LOOK AT THE GREEN BAY DEFENSE THAT PUT A LOT OF PRESSURE ON STEVE YOUNG AT LAMBEAU FIELD -- NINE SACKS, IN FACT. HOLLIDAY IS BACK. GILBERT BROWN, SANTANA DOTSON, THEN REGGIE WHITE. WILLIAMS, HARRIS, AND GEORGE KOONCE THE THREE LINEBACKERS. THE SECONDARY -- TYRONE WILLIAMS, SHARPER, BUTLER, AND NEWSOME... BACK AT CORNERBACK. SECOND AND 10. YOUNG TO GARRISON HEARST. HEARST FOR ABOUT 5, MAYBE 6. STOPPED BY NEWSOME. >> YOU KNOW, THAT'S GONNA BE ONE OF THE BIG THINGS FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ers TODAY IS HOW IS GARRISON HEARST'S PULLED HAMSTRING. WE WERE OUT AT PRACTICE FRIDAY, AND IT WASN'T VERY GOOD THAT DAY. HE RAN A LITTLE AND THEN HE COULDN'T DO ANYTHING. HE DIDN'T DO MUCH YESTERDAY. HE SAID IN THE PREGAME WARM-UP THAT IT WAS TIGHT. HE WAS HAVING TROUBLE LOOSENING UP, AND I THINK A BIG PART OF THIS IS WE KNOW THAT GARRISON HEARST IS STARTING THIS GAME, BUT CAN HE PLAY THE ENTIRE GAME AND BE EFFECTIVE? >> KIRBY HAS REPLACED HIM AS THE LONE SET BACK. AND KIRBY GOES IN MOTION, SO THERE ARE NO SET BACKS. AND LeROY BUTLER... YOUNG GETS AWAY FROM HIM. GETS THE BALL TO OWENS. FUMBLES. AND THE PACKERS HAVE IT. PAT TERRELL CAME UP WITH THE BALL. >> THE THING THAT THE 49ers WERE WORRIED ABOUT IS GETTING PRESSURE ON STEVE YOUNG. THEY GOT THE PRESSURE ON STEVE YOUNG. AND THEN NOT GIVING TURNOVERS. AND THEY GIVE A TURNOVER ON THEIR FIRST SERIES. YOU'RE GONNA SEE KEITH McKENZIE, NUMBER 95. HE'S GONNA COME FROM THE OUTSIDE. BUTLER JUST COMES STRAIGHT UP THE MIDDLE. THE GUY THAT THEY WERE WORRIED ABOUT, THE GUY THAT THEY SAY, "WE HAVE TO KNOW WHERE HE IS ON EVERY DOWN, WE HAVE TO GET HIM BLOCKED," ON THE FIRST PASSING PLAY -- ON THE THIRD-DOWN PLAY, THEY DON'T GET BUTLER BLOCKED. HE COMES RIGHT UP THE MIDDLE FREE. >> NOBODY KNEW WHERE HE WAS. AND THAT'S WHAT THEY CAN'T DO. THE PACKERS RECOVER OWENS' FUMBLE. WE'LL SET THEIR OFFENSIVE UNIT IN A MOMENT. DORSEY LEVENS THE DEEP BACK. OUTSIDE TO HENDERSON FROM FAVRE. AND HERE IS THE GREEN BAY OFFENSE, LED BY THREE-TIME MVP BRETT FAVRE. 5-0 RECORD AGAINST SAN FRANCISCO. VERBA, RIVERA, DELLENBACH, TIMMERMAN, AND DOTSON UP FRONT. MARK CHMURA WILL BE THE TIGHT END. BROOKS AND FREEMAN WIDE. HENDERSON AND LEVENS. HENDERSON GOT 9 ON THE COMPLETION FROM FAVRE. SECOND AND 1. LEVENS. BEHIND THE LINE. DIDN'T GET THE FIRST. JUNIOR BRYANT FIRST. AND LET'S LOOK AT THAT SAN FRANCISCO DEFENSE. THE PACKERS JUST HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO RUN OF LATE. THE FRONT FOUR -- BARKER, BRYANT, WILKINS, AND DOLEMAN. DOLEMAN AND BARKER HAVE SWITCHED SIDES. KEN NORTON, ANTHONY PETERSON IN THE MIDDLE, AND LEE WOODALL, THE THREE LINEBACKERS. PETERSON IS NEW. POPE, HANKS, McDONALD, AND DARNELL WALKER -- THE SECONDARY. THIRD AND 1 STILL. LEVENS GOT NOTHING. CHMURA MOVED. FAVRE TO HENDERSON. I BEG YOUR PARDON -- LEVENS. >> YOU KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING, PAT? YOU KNOW, WE TALKED ABOUT HOW THEY MOVED CHRIS DOLEMAN FROM THE RIGHT SIDE TO THE LEFT SIDE BECAUSE HE HAS A TORN PEC. THEY'RE RUNNING RIGHT AT HIM, AND HE'S JUST NOT EFFECTIVE. AND YOU CAN JUST SEE THAT THIS IS WHERE THEY'RE GOING TO RUN BECAUSE HE DOESN'T HAVE THE STRENGTH THERE. HE DOESN'T HAVE THE STRENGTH IN EITHER ARM. HE DOESN'T PLAY THE RUN WELL ANYWAY, BUT THAT'S WHERE THEY TIE HIM UP, AND THEY MUST KNOW ABOUT THAT INJURY, AND THEY'RE GONNA GO AT HIM. >> LEVENS TO THE 35. FIRST AND 10, GREEN BAY. FAVRE. ONE-HANDED CATCH BY LEVENS. >> YOU KNOW, IT'S INTERESTING. YESTERDAY WHEN WE TALKED TO BRETT FAVRE, HE SAID, YOU KNOW, THEY TALK ABOUT DORSEY LEVENS AND COMING BACK AND THE RUNNING GAME AND ALL THAT STUFF, HE SAID, "BUT HE'S REALLY MY SECURITY BLANKET IN THE PASSING GAME BECAUSE NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, I KNOW WHERE HE IS, AND HE'S ALWAYS RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF ME." AND WATCH RIGHT HERE, HOW LEVENS IS RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF HIM. HE LOOKS AROUND. IF HE CAN'T FIND ANYTHING, HE COMES RIGHT BACK STRAIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE, AND HE SAID, "DORSEY LEVENS WILL ALWAYS BE THERE." >> THEY NEED 3 FOR A FIRST DOWN. LEVENS AGAIN. HE'LL HAVE THE 3 AND MORE. >> I'LL SAY THIS. THESE DEFENSIVE ENDS -- WE LOOKED AT DOLEMAN. HE'S NOT PLAYING WELL ON THAT LEFT SIDE. AND ROY BARKER IS NOT PLAYING WELL ON THAT RIGHT SIDE. I MEAN, THEY LOOK LIKE THEY'RE IN A STRANGE POSITION, WHICH THEY ARE. BUT THEY'RE PLAYING LIKE THEY'RE IN A STRANGE POSITION. I MEAN, ROY BARKER DIDN'T PLAY THAT THING AT ALL. I MEAN, HE DIDN'T GET OFF ANY BLOCK. HE JUST WENT STRAIGHT BACKWARD. >> BOTH BAD KNEES. THAT'S NOT AN EXCUSE. THAT'S A FACT. FIRST AND 10 FOR GREEN BAY AT THE SAN FRANCISCO 22-YARD LINE. FAVRE. FAKES TO LEVENS. GIVES TO HENDERSON. HENDERSON INSIDE THE 10. IT'LL BE FIRST AND GOAL. >> AND IT'S STARTING OUT HERE, IN EVERY ONE OF THESE GAMES, THE LINES OF THE PACKERS HAVE DOMINATED. AND YOU CAN SEE HERE, A LITTLE PLAY PASS. NO PRESSURE AT ALL. LOOK AT THE TIME THAT BRETT FAVRE HAD. I MEAN, HE'S LOOKING DOWNFIELD, LOOKING DOWNFIELD. HE FINALLY COMES OFF TO WILLIAM HENDERSON, BUT IN ALL THE GAMES, THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF THINGS THEY'VE HAD IN COMMON, BUT USUALLY THE LINES DOMINATE THE OTHER LINE, AND THE GREEN BAY LINE, IN THOSE FIVE GAMES, HAVE DOMINATED THE 49er LINE BOTH OFFENSIVELY AND DEFENSIVELY. >> FIRST AND GOAL AT THE 9. LEVENS. TO THE 5. JUST ACROSS. >> WE TALKED ABOUT BRETT FAVRE AND STARTING OUT. SOMETIMES HE'LL START OUT A LITTLE SHAKY. HE'LL FORCE THINGS, AND THAT DRIVES MIKE HOLMGREN CRAZY, BUT IN THIS THING, HE'S STARTING OUT 3 FOR 3, AND THEY'VE ALL BEEN TO BACKS BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WE TALKED ABOUT WHAT THE 49ers ARE GONNA DO, HOW THEY'RE GONNA DOUBLE ANTONIO FREEMAN. ROBERT BROOKS AND CHMURA AREN'T IN PERFECT HEALTH. SO THE GUYS THAT HAVE BEEN OPEN OR HE FEELS COMFORTABLE ABOUT ON THIS DRIVE HAS BEEN HIS BACKS. >> THREE WIDE RECEIVERS. HERE COMES CHMURA IN MOTION. FAVRE LOOKS IN HIS DIRECTION. INCOMPLETE. HE THREW THAT JUST ABOUT AS HARD AS A FOOTBALL CAN BE THROWN. >> YOU KNOW WHEN YOU THROW A BALL THAT HARD, THERE'S NO WAY IT'S GONNA BE INTERCEPTED. I MEAN, JUST WATCH THIS HERE. HE'S TRYING TO THROW IT IN THERE, AND HE JUST THROWS IT SO HARD THAT THERE'S NO WAY IT COULD BE INTERCEPTED. HE WAS TRYING TO GET TO ANTONIO FREEMAN, BUT THERE WERE THREE 49ers THERE. >> THIS WILL BE THE NINTH PLAY OF THIS PACKER DRIVE COMING UP. >> THAT IS SURPRISING THAT THEY WOULD PUT CHARLES HALEY IN IN THIS SITUATION. >> YEAH. >> YOU'D EXPECT A LONG-YARDAGE SITUATION, ALTHOUGH IT IS A BIG THIRD-DOWN PLAY. >> PASS WENT RIGHT THROUGH THE HANDS OF TYRONE DAVIS. >> WELL, THAT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT -- THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT BRETT FAVRE WAS WORRIED ABOUT, IS THESE GUYS HAVEN'T BEEN OUT THERE. THEY'RE COMING BACK, BUT THEY'RE NOT HERE. NOW WATCH CHARLES HALEY. ON HIS FIRST PLAY, HE'S GOING AGAINST ROSS VERBA, AND HE SAID THAT HE WAS GONNA DO THAT. HE WAS GONNA TAKE A TOUGH INSIDE MOVE. HE SAID, "ALL I HAVE TO DO IN THIS GAME IS PUT MY HAND DOWN AND GO AFTER BRETT FAVRE." >> LONGWELL WILL TRY TO PUT THE PACKERS AHEAD FROM 23 YARDS AWAY. RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE. AND GREEN BAY BREAKS ON TOP. UP ABOVE AND BRINGING YOU A BLIMP'S-EYE VIEW OF TODAY'S GAME, THE GREAT GREEN FUJIFILM BLIMP WITH A GAS BAG SO LARGE -- OVER 750,000 REGULATION NFL FOOTBALLS COULD FIT INSIDE. I BET VERY FEW PEOPLE KNOW THAT. >> I BET VERY FEW PEOPLE HAVE EVER TRIED THAT. >> TO McQUARTERS. KIRBY AROUND THE CORNER. STOPPED BY BERNARDO HARRIS, BUT GOOD YARDAGE. >> YEAH, THAT WAS PRETTY INTERESTING, PAT. THEY DIDN'T HAVE A FULLBACK IN THERE. THEY HAD GARRISON HEARST AND TERRY KIRBY. WHAT THEY DID IS THEY TOOK HEARST AND THEY PUT HIM IN MOTION, AND THEN THEY RAN KIRBY TO THE SIDE OF THE MOTION. SO NOW, WHAT THAT'LL DO IS THAT'LL STRETCH OUT THE DEFENSE ON THIS SIDE. YOU SEE, HERE'S HEARST GOING IN MOTION THERE. NOW, THEY WANT TO MOVE THE DEFENSE OUT THERE. THEN KIRBY IS GOING TO RUN AND BOUNCE OUT TO THAT SAME SIDE, THEN HE HAS HEARST, WHO GOT IN MOTION AND WIDEN THE DEFENSE, THERE AS A BLOCKER. >> THIS IS HEARST. GARRISON HEARST. ANOTHER 49er FIRST DOWN. STOPPED BY BRIAN WILLIAMS. BUT TWO CONSECUTIVE FIRST DOWNS BY SAN FRANCISCO ON THE GROUND. >> AND THE BIG THING ABOUT THAT, AS YOU LOOK AT THIS, IS GARRISON HEARST HAS A PULLED RIGHT HAMSTRING, BUT HE LOOKS PRETTY GOOD. >> YES, HE DOES. >> AND I THINK THAT'S A BIG KEY TO THE 49ers, IS GARRISON HEARST HEALTHY AND CAN HE PLAY TODAY, BECAUSE IF THEY'RE GONNA BEAT THE PACKERS, THEY HAVE TO BE ABLE TO RUN THE BALL. >> AND GARRISON HEARST WE SAW A MOMENT AGO, WHILE WE WERE AWAY, WARMING UP ON A BICYCLE BEHIND THE 49er BENCH WHEN THE DEFENSIVE UNIT'S ON THE FIELD. >> REMEMBER, THEY DID THAT LAST WEEK WHEN HE FIRST PULLED THE HAMSTRING. >> HERE'S STEVE YOUNG BACK TO THROW. SCREEN PASS COMING. KIRBY WITH IT. CHASED BY GILBERT BROWN. SLIPPED DOWN. DARREN SHARPER. >> ISN'T THAT SOMETHING? GILBERT BROWN [CHUCKLES] IS HUSTLING TODAY. THEY SAY THAT HE CAN PLAY IN A TELEPHONE BOX. BUT THAT TIME ON THAT SCREEN, HE READ THAT SCREEN AND HE CAME RUNNING RIGHT DOWN THE LINE. AND I KNOW THAT KIRBY HAD TO SEE HIM. BUT WATCH GILBERT BROWN, NUMBER 93 HERE. HE STARTS ON HIS PASS RUSH. NOW HE SEES KIRBY COMING OUT HERE, SO HE RUNS STRAIGHT AT A LINE WHERE KIRBY'S GONNA GO. HE DIDN'T CATCH HIM, BUT HE MADE KIRBY KIND OF DO SOMETHING THAT SOMEONE ELSE COULD CATCH HIM. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE KIRBY? YOU'RE LOOKING BACK. [ CHUCKLES ] HERE COMES BIG, OLD 350-POUND GILBERT BROWN RUNNING AT YOU. >> HOW'D YOU LIKE TO BE THE GROUND? >> [ CHUCKLES ] I KNOW YOU'RE NOT GONNA CUT BACK. >> SECOND AND 5. [ WHISTLE BLOWS ] MOVE TOO SOON? >> DELAY OF GAME, OFFENSE. >> TOOK TOO LONG. >> 5 YARDS. >> GERRY AUSTIN THE REFEREE. >> STILL SECOND DOWN. >> IN HIS 17th YEAR. >> I THINK WITH ALL THAT STUFF WITH GILBERT BROWN RUNNING ALL THE WAY FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD TO THE SIDELINE AND KIRBY SLIPPING DOWN, I THINK IT TOOK EVERYONE TOO MUCH TIME TO GET BACK AND GET SET. >> IT'LL MAKE IT SECOND AND 10 RIGHT AT MIDFIELD. THERE'S FRITZ SHURMUR. >> FRITZ SHURMUR STARTED OUT AND SO FAR, IN THE FIRST SERIES, THEY HAD THREE PLAYS, AND FRITZ GAVE THEM THREE DIFFERENT DEFENSES. >> THREE-MAN LINE THIS TIME. HEARST. TRYING TO PICK HIS WAY, BUT GILBERT BROWN WAS UP TO THE TASK. >> YEP. [ CROWD BOOS ] OOH, THE FANS HERE DON'T LIKE THAT. THAT'S GILBERT BROWN, THE OLD SHOVEL MOVE. >> [ LAUGHS ] >> THAT HE GIVES HERE. BUT WATCH HIM. HERE HE IS RIGHT HERE. AND IF YOU'RE GOING TO RUN IN THE MIDDLE, THE CENTER, CHRIS DALMAN, HAS TO DO A BETTER JOB OF GETTING SOME MOVEMENT ON GILBERT BROWN, OR THEY HAVE TO DO A BETTER JOB IN SCHEMING AND GET A DOUBLE OR START A DOUBLE TEAM ON GILBERT BROWN. HE IS TOUGH TO SINGLE-TEAM BY THE CENTER AND RUN STRAIGHT AT. YOU'RE NOT GONNA DO THAT. >> SINGLE-TEAM? TAKES TWO GUYS TO STRETCH HIM. >> TAKES TWO GUYS TO GET READY TO STRETCH HIM. >> [ LAUGHS ] STEVE YOUNG. INCOMPLETE. INTENDED FOR J.J. STOKES. JUST BARELY OFF HIS FINGERTIPS. AND THE 49ers WILL HAVE TO PUNT. >> ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THE PACKER DEFENSE WANTED TO DO IS KEEP THE 49er OFFENSE OUT OF RHYTHM, AND THEY'VE DONE THAT IN THE PASSING-DEFENSE PART. BUT THE 49ers HAVE TO FEEL GOOD THAT THEY ARE GETTING A LITTLE RUNNING GAME GOING HERE. >> REGGIE ROBY BACK TO PUNT TO EITHER MIKE PRIOR OR ROELL PRESTON. ROBY'S KICK IS GOOD. HEADED FOR THE END ZONE AND IN. THEY'LL BRING IT BACK TO THE 20. 3-0, GREEN BAY OVER SAN FRANCISCO, 5:49 LEFT IN THE FIRST QUARTER. PACKER BALL AT THEIR OWN 20. FAVRE. LOOKED RIGHT. THROWS LEFT. ALMOST INTERCEPTED. MARK CHMURA, I BELIEVE, WAS THE INTENDED TARGET. >> WELL, THE GOAL OF THIS 49er DEFENSE, AND WE TALKED ABOUT IT BEFORE THE GAME, IS TO PUT MARQUEZ POPE ON ANTONIO FREEMAN AND TAKE HIM OUT OF THE GAME. AND AS TIM McDONALD TOLD US THE OTHER DAY, THAT "WE ARE NOT GONNA LET ANTONIO FREEMAN BEAT US. IF THEY'RE GONNA BEAT US, THEY'RE GONNA BEAT US WITH CHMURA OR THEY'RE GONNA BEAT US WITH BROOKS OR THEY'RE GONNA BEAT US WITH LEVENS. BUT THEY WILL NOT, IN THIS GAME, BEAT US WITH ANTONIO FREEMAN." >> BROOKS IS WIDE RIGHT. FREEMAN TO THE LEFT. THEY GIVE THE BALL TO LEVENS, WHO'S HIT BEHIND THE LINE. THE BALL CAME LOOSE, AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE 49ers HAVE IT. UNLESS THEY SAY HE WAS DOWN. THE 49ers DO HAVE IT. [ CROWD CHEERS ] McDONALD. IT WAS RECOVERED BY CHRIS DOLEMAN. >> AND YOU SEE THE GUY THAT WAS UP THERE. YOU KNOW, WE TALKED ABOUT LeROY BUTLER AND THE THINGS THAT HE DOES FOR THAT GREEN BAY PACKER DEFENSE. TIM McDONALD DOES THE SAME THING FOR THAT 49er DEFENSE. HE'S KIND OF HALF A DEFENSIVE BACK AND HALF A LINEBACKER. AND WHEN YOU RUN, HE IS UP THERE GETTING PENETRATION AND MAKING PLAYS LIKE THAT. >> SO, IT'S FIRST DOWN, SAN FRANCISCO, AT THE GREEN BAY 19 AFTER THEY RECOVER THE FUMBLE. >> IT WAS INTERESTING THAT TIM McDONALD HAD BEEN IN PASS DEFENSE EVERY PLAY -- THAT'S THE FIRST TIME THAT HE BLITZED. >> THE HAND-OFF TO KIRBY, WHO'S DOWN INSIDE THE 10, TO THE 7. TERRY KIRBY -- HE'S QUITE A STORY. >> I'LL TELL YOU, HE IS. AND I WAS SAYING LAST WEEK THAT HE HAS HIS SWERVE ON. I MEAN, HE'S MAKING MOVES NOW. HERE'S TERRY KIRBY HERE. HE'S PLAYING IN THE FULLBACK POSITION. GOOD BLOCK BY RAY BROWN THERE. >> YEP. >> YOU KNOW, CHRIS DALMAN, THE CENTER, HE GETS INTO HIS GUY. RAY BROWN GETS INTO HIS GUY AND TURNS HIM OUT, AND LOOK AT THE HOLE THAT TERRY KIRBY HAS HERE, AND THEN LeROY BUTLER MISSES THE TACKLE. >> FIRST AND GOAL AT THE 7. RAY BROWN TOOK AN UNUSUALLY WIDE SPLIT. HERE'S KIRBY AGAIN. CLOSE TO THE END ZONE. DOWN ABOUT THE HALF-YARD LINE. TERRY KIRBY RUNNING HARD. >> AND RAY BROWN LED THAT ONE AGAIN. THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS ABOUT THESE 49er GUARDS. I MEAN, THEY'RE BIG GUYS, BUT THEY DO MOVE AND PULL. WATCH RAY BROWN. HE'S GONNA PULL IN HERE, AND HE'S GONNA LEAD TERRY KIRBY. YOU SEE 65 THERE. HE PULLED. RIGHT THERE -- BOOM! HE GETS THAT BLOCK THERE. TERRY KIRBY'S RIGHT AT THAT POINT AND JUST BREAKS RIGHT OFF THAT BLOCK. I THINK, AND I SAID THIS LAST WEEK, TOO, I THINK THAT IF YOU SAID, WHO'S THE MOST UNDERRATED GUY ON THE SAN FRANCISCO 49er TEAM, TO ME, IT'S RAY BROWN. >> AND THAT'S WHAT STEVE MARIUCCI SAYS ALSO. >> AND THEY'RE HAVING TROUBLE RIGHT NOW. THEY'RE GONNA HAVE TO TAKE A TIME-OUT HERE, PAT, BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T GET THEIR GOAL-LINE OFFENSE IN THERE. >> IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT CIRCLE IS RAY BROWN, WHO'S DONE SUCH A GOOD JOB THE LAST COUPLE OF PLAYS. THERE'S DEESE CHECKING IN JUST MOMENTS AGO. >> YEAH, HE HAS TO CHECK IN. HE HAS TO TELL THE REFEREE THAT HE IS AN INELIGIBLE NUMBER PLAYING AN ELIGIBLE POSITION, THEN THE REFEREE TELLS THAT TO THE DEFENSE. >> YOUNG. TOUCHDOWN. GREG CLARK. THE TIGHT END ALL ALONE IN THE PACKER END ZONE. >> HERE'S GREG BROWN RIGHT THERE. YOU SEE WHAT HE DOES. HE GOES DOWN -- GREG CLARK -- HE GOES DOWN LIKE HE'S GONNA BLOCK, THE OLD TRICK, AND THEN HE STANDS UP. >> THE EXTRA POINT IS GOOD BY RICHEY. AND THE 49ers LEAD THE PACKERS, 7-3. >> THAT'S THE OLD TRICK 'EM PLAY, YOU KNOW, WHERE THE TIGHT END, GREG CLARK THERE, HE GOES LIKE HE'S GONNA MAKE A BLOCK, AND HE GOES DOWN TO THE GROUND, AND THEN A DEFENDER WILL LOOK ELSEWHERE. HE'LL LOOK AWAY, AND THEN HE GETS UP AND HE JUST RUNS RIGHT BY HIM. NOW WATCH. HERE'S GREG CLARK THERE. AND WATCH. HE'S GONNA GO DOWN, YOU SEE, LIKE HE'S MAKING A BLOCK, AND THEN WHEN HE COMES UP, THERE'S NO DEFENDER THERE. >> BRENT JONES WAS GREAT AT THAT. >> THAT'S AN OLD TIGHT END TRICK. AND YOU ALWAYS LIKE IT. YOU'RE ALWAYS HAPPY WHEN YOU SCORE A TOUCHDOWN. ANY PLAYER IS. BUT WHEN YOU KIND OF TRICK THEM AND THEN YOU SCORE A TOUCHDOWN, THEN YOU'RE DOUBLY HAPPY BECAUSE YOUR TRICK WORKED AND YOU GOT THE TOUCHDOWN. >> SANTANA DOTSON... THEY'RE JUST CHANGING HIS CLEATS. >> YEAH, THEY'RE GONNA FIND OUT THAT THEY'RE GONNA BE DOING THAT ALL DAY. EVERY TEAM THAT COMES IN AND PLAYS THE 49ers HERE ALWAYS STARTS OUT WITH SHORTER CLEATS THEN TAKES OUT THEIR CLEATS AND PUT LONGER CLEATS ON BECAUSE THEY'RE ALWAYS GONNA SLIP. GREG CLARK IS AN INTERESTING GUY. HE'S OUT OF STANFORD. AND THEY SAY NOW THAT HE WAS JUST A BLOCKER AND NOT MUCH A RECEIVER, AND HE LAUGHS AT THAT AND SAID BECAUSE -- HE SAID WHEN HE WAS AT STANFORD, EVERYONE SAID HE WAS A RECEIVER AND NOT A GOOD BLOCKER. HE SAID, "CAN'T A GUY BE BOTH?" AND I THINK THAT'S WHAT HE'S GONNA END UP. >> WELL, HE'S BECOMING THAT. >> YEAH. AND STEVE YOUNG WAS TALKING ABOUT THAT THE OTHER DAY, THAT IT'S GOOD TO GET BACK TO YOUR TIGHT END AND GET HIM IN THE FLOW OF THINGS BECAUSE IT JUST GIVES THE DEFENSE ANOTHER THING TO THINK ABOUT. >> RICHEY TO KICK IT OFF. LINE-DRIVE KICK TO ROELL PRESTON. AND HE'S GONNA BRING IT OUT OF THERE. AND HE'S A GOOD RETURN MAN. PRESTON OUT TO ABOUT THE 38-YARD LINE, WHERE HE'S KNOCKED OUT OF BOUNDS. A LOT TO WATCH IN THIS CONTEST RIGHT HERE. RAY BROWN, WE'RE TOLD, HAS A BRUISED RIGHT FOREARM. AND WE'LL JUST HAVE TO CHECK ON WHETHER OR NOT HE COMES BACK. THERE'S THE ICE PACK ON HIS RIGHT FOREARM. >> THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT PLAYING DIFFERENT GUYS AT ENDS. NOW ROY BARKER HAS MOVED BACK TO HIS LEFT END, AND THEY'RE PLAYING GABE WILKINS -- REMEMBER THE OLD PACKER WHO STARTED AT TACKLE? GABE WILKINS IS NOW PLAYING AT RIGHT DEFENSIVE END. >> RIGHT. >> SO, HE'S OUT THERE. HE'S RIGHT THERE, AND HE'S PLAYING IN THE POSITION OF CHRIS DOLEMAN. >> FOUR WIDE RECEIVERS. FAVRE DUMPS IT OUT TO LEVENS. LEVENS... GETS A PACKER FIRST DOWN. THERE WAS A LINEBACKER LOOKING AT HIM -- KEN NORTON. BUT LEVENS PULLED AWAY FROM NORTON. >> WELL, ONE THING THAT THE 49er DEFENSE IS DOING WELL -- THEY SAID THAT THEY'RE NOT GONNA LET ANTONIO FREEMAN BEAT THEM, AND THEY HAVEN'T -- THEIR WIDE RECEIVERS OF THE GREEN BAY PACKERS HAVEN'T CAUGHT A PASS YET. I THINK THAT'S ONE THING THAT MIKE HOLMGREN'S GONNA DO, THAT BRETT FAVRE IS GONNA DO. THEY'RE NOT GONNA CONTINUE MUCH LONGER IN THIS GAME WITHOUT THROWING TO THE WIDE RECEIVERS. >> FAVRE TO LEVENS. LEVENS HIT RIGHT AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE BY GABE WILKINS. >> I THINK WHAT STEVE MARIUCCI PROBABLY SAW THAT CHRIS DOLEMAN, WITH THAT TORN PEC, CAN'T DO IT, SO HE PUT ROY BARKER BACK AT HIS POSITION, TOOK WILKINS OUT OF THE TACKLE POSITION, AND PUT HIM AT THAT RIGHT END POSITION TO DO JUST THAT, TO PLAY TOUGH AGAINST THE RUN. >> AND HE PLAYED THAT RUN WELL. SECOND AND 9. JUST SHY OF MIDFIELD. FAVRE TO DORSEY LEVENS. AND A LOT OF ROOM FOR LEVENS AS HE BANGS DOWN TO ABOUT THE 32-YARD LINE OF SAN FRANCISCO. 33 MAKE IT. FIRST DOWN, GREEN BAY. >> THIS IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT YOU HAVE TO DO. YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO RUN THE BALL IF THEY ARE GOING TO BE OUT THERE DOUBLING YOUR WIDE RECEIVERS BECAUSE ONCE YOU GET THROUGH HERE, ONCE YOU GET TO THAT POINT, BECAUSE THEY'RE DOUBLING, THOSE SAFETIES AREN'T GONNA BE UP OR AROUND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, SO ONCE YOU GET PAST THAT LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, YOU'RE GOING TO GET A 10-YARD GAIN BECAUSE THOSE SAFETIES ARE WORRYING ABOUT DOUBLING ANTONIO FREEMAN. >> EXACTLY WHAT LEVENS GOT. HERE'S FAVRE GOING DEEP FOR BROOKS. BROOKS. INCOMPLETE. NO FLAG. DARNELL WALKER, GOOD COVERAGE. >> AND YOU SEE ON THAT OTHER SIDE, THE REASON HE'S THROWING TO BROOKS HERE IS THAT WE HAVE THE DOUBLE COVERAGE ON THE OTHER SIDE, WHICH MEANS THAT YOU HAVE SINGLE COVERAGE HERE, SO THEY'RE GONNA WORK ON DARNELL WALKER, BUT BROOKS JUST DOESN'T BEAT HIM. DARNELL WALKER HAS EXCELLENT COVERAGE. I MEAN, HE'S RIGHT THERE. IF THE BALL'S THROWN SHORT, HE'S GONNA BE IN POSITION TO GET IT. IF THE BALL IS THROWN DEEP OR NORMAL, DARNELL WALKER WAS IN BETTER POSITION THAN ROBERT BROOKS. >> CHRIS DOLEMAN IS BACK IN THE LINEUP NOW AT THE LEFT DEFENSIVE END. SECOND AND 10. FAVRE DROPS. SCREEN PASS SET UP. 49ers PLAYED IT WELL. CAUGHT DORSEY LEVENS FROM BEHIND. >> GREAT PLAY BY GABE WILKINS. WHAT ROSS VERBA, THE LEFT TACKLE, DOES, IS ON A SCREEN, YOU TRY AND CUT THAT GUY TO GET HIS HANDS DOWN. NOW WATCH HIM. HE'S LOOKING IN HERE. HE'S GONNA TRY AND CUT GABE WILKINS RIGHT THERE. WILKINS GOES -- SEE, HE STARTS TO GET CUT RIGHT THERE, THEN HE GETS BACK UP AND HE COMES BACK AND MAKES THAT PLAY. >> THAT BRINGS UP A THIRD AND 5. [ WHISTLE BLOWS ] DOLEMAN AND HALEY ARE THE DEFENSIVE ENDS NOW. HALEY IS WEARING 95, AS WE SAID EARLIER. THAT'S A 49er TIME-OUT. AND THEY ONLY HAVE ONE LEFT. >> THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HAPPENS WITH ALL THESE SUBSTITUTIONS. YOU END UP A LOT OF TIMES WITH 10 GUYS IN THERE AND 12 GUYS IN THERE BECAUSE THREE GO OUT AND ONLY TWO COME IN, AND THOSE TYPES OF THINGS. THAT WHOLE THING, I THINK, IS WHY WE SEE MORE PENALTIES TODAY IN FOOTBALL, AND I THINK IT'S WHY WE SEE MORE GUYS JUMPING AND ALL THOSE THINGS BECAUSE GUYS DON'T PLAY AS MUCH WHERE THEY REALLY GET A RHYTHM. >> MM-HMM. >> LOOK AT THIS RECORD THAT STEVE MARIUCCI HAS HERE AT HOME -- 17-1. >> LOST ONE GAME HERE. >> AND THAT WAS TO THESE GREEN BAY PACKERS IN LAST YEAR'S CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. MIKE HOLMGREN -- WHAT A COACH HE IS. THERE'S BEEN TALK ALL YEAR -- IN FACT, THERE'S BEEN TALK FOR TWO YEARS THAT MIKE HOLMGREN ISN'T GONNA BE BACK NEXT YEAR WITH THIS PACKER TEAM, BUT NO ONE KNOWS EXACTLY WHERE HE IS GONNA BE. >> WELL, HE SAYS HE'S HAPPY WHERE HE IS. HE JUST WANTS TO LOOK AROUND, I THINK. >> AND I THINK HE'S GONNA LOOK AROUND AND GO. >> OH, YOU THINK HE'S GONE? >> YEAH. >> HERE'S LEVENS. AND HE DOESN'T GET ENOUGH FOR A FIRST DOWN. IT'S GONNA BE FOURTH AND ABOUT 2 FEET. HOLMGREN THINKS ABOUT IT. >> YEAH, AND I THINK YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT AND KICK THE FIELD GOAL. I KNOW IT'S A TOUGH THING TO DO. YOU ALWAYS WANT TO GO FOR IT, BUT I THINK THE PERCENTAGE IS THAT YOU KICK THE FIELD GOAL HERE. ALTHOUGH IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE MIKE HOLMGREN'S GOING FOR THE PERCENTAGE. >> NO. >> I THINK IF THEY HAD A GREAT RUNNING BACK OR A GREAT POWER RUNNING BACK THAT MAYBE IT WOULD BE A DIFFERENT SITUATION. >> THEY NEED ABOUT A YARD. >> BUT I THINK WITHOUT A GREAT POWER BACK, POWER RUNNING BACK, I DON'T THINK THIS IS A CINCH THING. I DON'T KNOW WHAT BRETT FAVRE IS THINKING BECAUSE HE'S TAKING A TIME-OUT. >> SO, THE PACKERS HAVE USED TWO OF THEIR TIME-OUTS, SO THEY'LL HAVE ONE LEFT. >> WE WERE TALKING ABOUT HOW EVERYONE STEPS UP AND THE INTENSITY AND ALL THOSE THINGS AND THE URGENCY BECAUSE OF THE FINALITY, AND I THINK THAT'S WHY YOU SEE THESE KINDS OF THINGS. IT'S JUST NOT A GAME -- "WELL, IF WE DON'T GET THEM TODAY, WE'LL GET THEM NEXT WEEK." IF YOU LOSE TODAY, THERE IS NO NEXT WEEK, SO I THINK EVERY LITTLE THING LIKE THIS YOU WANT TO BE SURE OF. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN A PERSON THAT HATED TO WASTE TIME-OUTS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE ENOUGH GUYS ON THE FIELD, AND WHEN YOU'RE GONNA GO FOR IT ON FOURTH DOWN, YOU BETTER HAVE THE RIGHT GUYS AND THE RIGHT PLAY. >> YOU THINK FAVRE JUST DISAGREED WITH THE CALL OR WANTED TIME TO THINK IT OVER OR WHAT? >> WHAT I THINK HAPPENED WAS BY THE TIME THEY GOT THE PLAY CALL IN THERE AND THE PERSONNEL PACKAGE, TIME WAS RUNNING OUT ON THE PLAY CLOCK. AND HE WAS EITHER GONNA HAVE TO GO TOO QUICKLY OR HE WAS GONNA GET PENALIZED. >> THEY'RE STILL GONNA GO. THEY NEED A YARD. LEVENS... WILL HAVE IT AND MORE. DORSEY LEVENS INSIDE THE 10, TO ABOUT THE 3. WELL... >> [ Laughing ] THAT'S NOT BAD RIGHT THERE. THAT'S WHY MIKE HOLMGREN'S MIKE HOLMGREN. HERE'S CHRIS DOLEMAN RIGHT THERE, AND YOU SEE THAT HE HAS THAT TORN LEFT PEC, AND HE REALLY CAN'T PLAY THE RUN. AND THAT'S WHERE THE GREEN BAY PACKERS ARE GONNA RUN. YOU SEE HIM GET PUSHED OFF THE LINE. TIM McDONALD MISSES A TACKLE THERE. BRONSON MISSES A TACKLE THERE. AND, OF COURSE, HE GETS A BIGGER PLAY THAN IT SHOULD'VE BEEN. I MEAN, ZACK BRONSON SHOULD'VE HAD HIM FOR ABOUT A 5-YARD GAIN, BUT THAT PUSH THAT THEY GOT ON CHRIS DOLEMAN, THAT GAVE THEM THE FIRST DOWN. THE MISSED TACKLE BY ZACK BRONSON GAVE THEM THE BIG PLAY. >> CHMURA GOT A GOOD BLOCK ON LEE WOODALL AND CUT HIM OUT OF THE PLAY. >> YEAH, THAT WHOLE LEFT DEFENSIVE SIDE -- TIM McDONALD, LEE WOODALL, AND CHRIS DOLEMAN DIDN'T DEFENSIVELY PLAY THAT WELL AT ALL. >> FIRST AND GOAL AT THE 2. >> STEVE MARIUCCI HAS BEEN A NERVOUS WRECK ALL THIS WEEK. >> HE REALLY HAS. >> IN FACT, WE ASKED STEVE YOUNG HOW STEVE MARIUCCI'S BEEN THIS WEEK, AND STEVE YOUNG'S SENTENCE WAS, "WHEW! WOW! WOW!" THAT WAS HIS SENTENCE. >> [ LAUGHS ] HERE'S FAVRE. INTO THE END ZONE. TOUCHDOWN TO ANTONIO FREEMAN, THE GUY "WE CAN'T LET BEAT US," BUT THERE'S A FLAG, I BELIEVE, IN THE END ZONE. YES, THERE IS. >> AND I THINK THIS IS AGAINST THE 49ers. IT'S GONNA BE HOLDING AGAINST THE 49ers. THAT'S RIGHT, AND THE TOUCHDOWN DOES STAY. >> HOLDING, NUMBER 36 OF THE DEFENSE. THE PENALTY IS DECLINED. TOUCHDOWN'S GOOD. >> CALLED AGAINST MERTON HANKS. >> YOU'RE GONNA SEE THIS IS THE REASON THAT BRETT FAVRE WANTED THE RUNNING GAME TO GO, SO HE COULD GO THAT PLAY PASS. YOU SEE HE FAKES TO DORSEY LEVENS. THERE'S ANTONIO FREEMAN RIGHT IN THERE. AND HE IS SO BIG AND STRONG THAT WHEN HE GETS INSIDE YOU, YOU ARE GOING TO BE BEAT. >> AND THE PACKERS... [ SEAGULLS CRYING ] THOSE GUYS COULDN'T GET TICKETS. >> NO, THAT'S THE SEALS COMING BACK. THEY COME BACK ABOUT EVERY TIME THIS YEAR TO PIER 39, AND THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE DOING NOW. THEY COME OUT OF NOWHERE. >> WHY 39? >> PIER 39 -- THAT'S A PLACE. THAT'S A DESTINATION POINT. >> THAT WAS HUGH McELHENNY'S NUMBER. McQUARTERS. >> LET'S WATCH THIS HERE, PAT. HERE'S ANTONIO FREEMAN. HERE'S TIM McDONALD. HERE'S MERTON HANKS. SO THEY HAVE HIM DOUBLED. BUT WATCH WHAT HE DOES. HE GETS BY TIM McDONALD HERE. YOU SEE HE GETS BY THERE. HE'S FORCED INSIDE. NOW WATCH THE MOVE RIGHT THERE THAT HE MAKES ON MERTON HANKS. HE GETS HIS HIPS TURNED, AND THEN HE GETS INSIDE ON HIM. AND THEN, OF COURSE, BRETT FAVRE MAKES A PERFECT THROW. >> ALL THOSE THINGS PIECED TOGETHER GIVE THE PACKERS THE LEAD. >> THE 49ers DID WHAT THEY WANTED TO DO WITH HIM. THEY WERE PHYSICAL WITH HIM AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. THEY HAD HIM DOUBLED. BUT ANTONIO FREEMAN STILL BEAT BOTH OF THEM. >> YOUNG ON FIRST DOWN. GIVES TO GARRISON HEARST. AND HEARST... SPINS HIS WAY UP FOR ABOUT 6 OR 7 YARDS. >> ONE OF THE THINGS THAT STEVE MARIUCCI WAS TALKING ABOUT IS BEING ABLE TO STAY WITH THE RUN. ANTONIO FREEMAN HAS ONLY CAUGHT ONE PASS, AND THAT WAS THE TOUCHDOWN PASS. BUT HE SAID -- AND IT HAPPENS TO ALL PLAY CALLERS THAT THEY'LL START WITH THE PASS, AND THEN THEY NEVER GET BACK TO THE RUN, SO THEY ALWAYS HAVE TO REMIND THEMSELVES OR HAVE SOMEONE REMIND THEM, WHEN YOU GET AWAY FROM THE RUN, GET BACK TO IT. >> IT'S INEVITABLE. HERE'S HEARST AGAIN. HE'S GONNA GET AROUND THE CORNER AND GET A FIRST DOWN. KNOCKED OUT OF BOUNDS BY TYRONE WILLIAMS. >> GARRISON HEARST HAS REALLY BEEN A SPECIAL GUY FOR THESE 49ers. STARTED OUT AND THINGS DIDN'T GO WELL FOR HIM IN ARIZONA, THEN THEY DIDN'T GO WELL IN CINCINNATI, AND THEN WHEN HE GOT HERE, HE BECAME A REAL SPECIAL ADDITION TO THIS TEAM. IN FACT, THE OFFENSIVE LINE COACH, BOBB McKITTRICK, SAYS IN ALL DUE RESPECT TO ROGER CRAIG, HE SAID, "GARRISON HEARST IS THE BEST RUNNING BACK WE'VE EVER HAD HERE." >> WELL, ROGER CRAIG DID MORE THINGS MAYBE, ALTHOUGH HEARST IS A GOOD PASS RECEIVER, AS WELL. HERE'S STEVE YOUNG. PASS COMPLETE. J.J. STOKES RUMBLES DOWN INSIDE PACKER TERRITORY TO THE GREEN BAY 45. >> THE FIRST THING THAT YOU HAVE TO DO WHEN YOU'RE GONNA THROW THE BALL TO YOUR WIDE RECEIVERS IS GET PROTECTION IN THE MIDDLE. SEE, BECAUSE STEVE YOUNG -- HE'S GONNA TAKE THAT SHORT THREE-STEP DROP. NOW, WHEN YOU TAKE THAT SHORT THREE-STEP DROP, YOU HAVE TO HAVE A CLEAN, SHORT POCKET. AND THEN WHEN YOU HAVE THAT, THEN YOU CAN DO THINGS LIKE THIS. THEN YOU CAN WAIT AND YOU CAN LOOK AND YOU CAN FIND YOUR SECONDARY RECEIVER BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT J.J. STOKES WAS. >> THAT'S ABOUT THE ONLY TIME YOU NEED A CLEAN, SHORT POCKET. >> [ LAUGHS ] IT'S HARD TO KEEP A CLEAN THREE-STEP-DROP POCKET. >> GOING DEEP. GOOD DEFENSE. NO FLAG. NO FLAG. >> I THINK DARREN SHARPER INTERCEPTED THAT BALL. >> HE DID. >> YEAH. TYRONE WILLIAMS HAD THE COVERAGE. HE'S NUMBER 37. DARREN SHARPER'S 42. HE'S GONNA COME ACROSS. AGAIN, YOU SEE HE GETS BY RIGHT HERE -- J.J. STOKES DOES. THE BALL IS THROWN. IT GOES UP IN THE AIR. NOW WATCH 42 -- SHARPER COMES IN AND HE CATCHES THAT BALL BEFORE IT GOES OUT OF BOUNDS. >> IN BOUNDS. AND GREEN BAY TAKES OVER. DARREN SHARPER, WHO JUST MADE THE INTERCEPTION, THE REMARKABLE INTERCEPTION, AND GREEN BAY TAKES OVER AT THEIR OWN 18-YARD LINE. FIRST AND 10 FROM THERE. HENDERSON AND LEVENS BEHIND FAVRE. LEVENS. NOT MUCH. >> ON THAT INTERCEPTION, SHARPER REALLY MADE A HECK OF A PLAY JUST GETTING OVER THERE. HERE'S DARREN SHARPER HERE. AND YOU'RE GONNA SEE THE TIP HERE, AND BY THE TIME THE BALL IS TIPPED IN THE AIR, SHARPER GETS ALL THE WAY OVER. YOU SEE WILLIAMS MAKE THE HECK OF A JOB OF GETTING HIS HAND ON IT THEN TIPPING IT UP AND THEN SHARPER CATCH IT. NOW, SHARPER WAS IN BOUNDS BECAUSE THE FIRST THING -- HE HAD THE BALL AND HIS ELBOW HIT, SO THAT'S WHEN HE WAS DOWN, SO HE WAS DOWN IN BOUNDS. >> AND THEN HIS KNEE. THAT WAS IN BOUNDS. >> ONE ELBOW EQUALS TWO FEET. >> HERE'S LEVENS AGAIN. A COUPLE YARDS BEFORE HE'S STOPPED BY LEE WOODALL. >> ONE ELBOW EQUALS TWO FEET, AS DOES ONE KNEE EQUAL TWO FEET. >> GOOD NAME FOR A BOOK. >> WHICH I LEARNED MANY YEARS AGO. REMEMBER WE WERE DOING A PRESEASON GAME AND I THOUGHT A GUY WAS OUT OF BOUNDS, BUT HIS KNEE HAD TOUCHED DOWN. AND ART McNALLY, WHO WAS THE HEAD OF THE OFFICIALS, THEN CALLED AND SAID THAT BECAUSE HIS KNEE WAS DOWN, YOU DON'T NEED TWO FEET IN. ONE KNEE EQUALS TWO FEET. NEVER MISUNDERSTOOD THAT ONE AGAIN. >> IT HELPS IF YOU HAVE A GOOD KNEE. FAVRE TO LEVENS. AS THEY STAY ON THE GROUND THREE STRAIGHT TIMES. STOPPED BY BUCKNER -- BRENTSON BUCKNER. AND THE PACKERS WILL HAVE TO PUNT. [ CROWD CHEERING ] SEAN LANDETA. >> AND LISTEN TO THIS CROWD. THEY REALLY RESPECT THAT DEFENSE. >> YEAH. >> THEY WERE TRYING TO GET THEM IN A PASS-RUSH SITUATION AND HIT THEM WITH A QUICK TRAP, AND IT DIDN'T WORK. >> LANDETA'S KICK COMES TO McQUARTERS, WHO IS DANGEROUS. McQUARTERS STEPPED OUT OF BOUNDS. IT'S 51 -- 61 RATHER IN SAN FRANCISCO AND SUNNY, BUT GREEN BAY, THEY'RE ALL WATCHING. >> BECAUSE THE STREETS ARE SO EMPTY. LOOK. I MEAN, YOU CAN'T SEE A HUMAN BEING. >> [ Chuckling ] NO. >> NOR CAN YOU SEE A BIRD. >> I SEE ONE CAR -- OR TRUCK MOVING. >> THAT GUY'S WORKING. >> AND BACK HERE AT SAN FRANCISCO. 10-7 THE PACKERS LEAD. AND HERE IS STEVE YOUNG FAKING. AND GETS THE BALL OUT TO HIS TIGHT END, GREG CLARK, WHO GETS ACROSS MIDFIELD, ABOUT THE PACKER 48. >> YOU KNOW WHO THE PACKERS ARE DOING A GOOD JOB ON IS JERRY RICE. >> YEAH. >> JERRY RICE, ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREAT RECEIVERS, AND MANY THINK, INCLUDING ME, THAT HE'S THE BEST RECEIVER THAT EVER PLAYED FOOTBALL. THEY HAVEN'T THROWN HIM A BALL YET. I'VE ALWAYS FELT AND JERRY RICE HAS ALWAYS FELT AND STEVE YOUNG HAS ALWAYS FELT AND STEVE MARIUCCI HAS ALWAYS FELT THAT YOU HAVE TO GET THE BALL TO JERRY RICE EARLY AND GET HIM INVOLVED IN THE GAME. >> SECOND AND 5. AND THAT'S HEARST. GARRISON HEARST. ACROSS THE PACKER 35. CRAIG NEWSOME BROUGHT HIM DOWN. >> I THINK THEIR OTHER PRIORITY IS GETTING GARRISON HEARST INVOLVED IN THE GAME AND STAYING WITH THE RUNNING GAME. AND THEY'RE FINDING GOOD SUCCESS HERE. IF THEY CAN GET GILBERT BROWN DOUBLED, AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY DO... >> THEY SURE DID. >> ...AND THEY GET HIM DOUBLED, THEY GET HIM TURNED, AND THEY PUT HIM ON HIS BACK. NOW, YOU AREN'T GOING TO FIND THAT VERY OFTEN, WHERE SOMEONE STARTS ON A DOUBLE AND PUTS GILBERT BROWN ON HIS BACK. THE 49ers JUST DID IT. >> LED BY RAY BROWN. FIRST AND 10. HEARST POPS THROUGH THERE IN A HURRY, DOESN'T HE? >> THAT'S THE THING ABOUT GARRISON HEARST. HE'S NOT A TALL GUY. HE'S ONLY LIKE 5'10". BUT HE WEIGHED ABOUT 215, 220 POUNDS, AND IF YOU LOOK AT HIM, ALL HIS POWER IS BELOW HIS WAIST. >> GOT BIG LEGS. >> HE HAS VERY BIG LEGS. AND THAT'S WHERE HE GETS NOT ONLY HIS QUICKNESS BUT HE GETS HIS EXPLOSION FROM THAT. AND WHEN THE BALL IS SNAPPED AND HE GETS THE BALL, SOMETIMES HE JUST -- BOOM! -- HE JUST EXPLODES INTO THAT HOLE. >> BUILT MUCH LIKE EMMITT SMITH. THERE HE IS AGAIN. >> AND AGAIN, IT'S THAT SAME THING WHERE RAY BROWN IS HIS LEFT GUARD. HE'S PULLING. RAY BROWN IS DOING AN EXCELLENT JOB OF LEADING GARRISON HEARST THROUGH THE HOLE AWAY FROM HIM. YOU'RE GONNA SEE HIM. HE'S GONNA PULL FROM THE LEFT SIDE. YOU SEE 65 HERE? NOW WATCH. HE PULLS RIGHT THERE. BOOM! HE MAKES THAT BLOCK. GARRISON HEARST IS RIGHT IN THERE BEHIND HIM. NOW HERE'S WHERE IT STARTS. YOU SEE BIG, OLD GOGAN? HE COMES DOWN THERE. THEY START A DOUBLE TEAM. GET ANOTHER DOUBLE TEAM THERE. I MEAN, THEY ARE CONTROLLING THAT LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. >> YES, SIR. >> DID YOU SEE WHAT KIRK SCRAFFORD DID TO REGGIE WHITE? >> AND GOGAN WITH AN OUTSTANDING BLOCK. THAT'S KIRBY. GARRISON HEARST -- EIGHT CARRIES FOR 62 YARDS. >> THAT'S AMAZING. IF YOU LOOK AT BOTH THE RUNNING BACKS, THE JOB THAT THEY'RE DOING -- DORSEY LEVENS HAS 13 CARRIES FOR 73 YARDS, AND GARRISON HEARST 8 CARRIES FOR 62 YARDS. BUT LOOK AT THE AVERAGES -- 5.6 FOR LEVENS AND 7.8 FOR HEARST. >> LEVENS WENT TO GEORGIA TECH. HEARST WENT TO GEORGIA. DORSEY LEVENS LOOKING ON AT THE MOMENT. THREE WIDE RECEIVERS. YOUNG DROPS TO THROW. >> LOOK AT THE TIME HE HAS. >> AND HE MIGHT JUST TAKE OFF AND CAN, AS YOU KNOW. AND HE WILL. NOW HE THROWS, END ZONE. INCOMPLETE. THREW IT AWAY. OWENS THE INTENDED RECEIVER. HAD A LOT OF TIME. BOUGHT A LOT OF TIME. >> YEAH, HE BOUGHT A LOT OF TIME, BUT THEN YOU HAVE TO GIVE THAT TO THE PACKER COVERAGE, THAT THERE WAS NO ONE OPEN BECAUSE HE HAD SO MUCH TIME, BUT YOU CAN JUST LOOK AT THE COVERAGE. SEE, HERE'S WHERE HE WAS LOOKING. HE WAS LOOKING FOR J.J. STOKES THERE. THERE'S GOOD COVERAGE THERE. YOU SEE, HE HAS NOTHING TO THROW TO, AND THAT'S WHY HE HAD TO BUY SOME MORE TIME BECAUSE HE KEPT WAITING FOR J.J. STOKES TO DO SOMETHING OUT THERE ON TYRONE WILLIAMS. >> TO UNCOVER. >> AND HE NEVER DID UNCOVER. >> NO, HE DIDN'T. YOUNG IS 5 OUT OF 9. THE ONE INTERCEPTION BY SHARPER. REMARKABLE INTERCEPTION. HERE'S YOUNG. THIS IS A DESIGNED RUN BY STEVE YOUNG. >> YEAH, THAT'S A QUARTERBACK DRAW. IN FACT, WE SAW THEM PRACTICING THAT ON FRIDAY. I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY TIMES YOU WANT TO RUN THAT BECAUSE -- I WAS TALKING TO STEVE YOUNG THE OTHER DAY, AND I SAID, "HOW ARE YOU FEELING?" HE SAID, "WELL, OTHER THAN MY LEFT KNEE," HE SAID, "I'M PRETTY GOOD." REMEMBER THE SECOND-TO-THE-LAST GAME, HE HURT HIS LEFT KNEE. YOU'RE GONNA SEE THERE. I THINK THAT'S WHAT HE'S LIMPING ON. BUT THEY TRY AND MAKE PASS RUSH. YOU SEE THEY TRY AND MAKE IT LOOK LIKE IT'S A PASS TO GET THE PASS RUSH, AND THEY DIDN'T GET IT. >> RICHEY... HITS THE FIELD GOAL. 10-10 TIE BETWEEN THE PACKERS AND THE 49ers. THOSE AERIAL SHOTS YOU'VE BEEN SEEING OF SAN FRANCISCO AND THE BAY AREA BEING BROUGHT TO YOU COURTESY OF THE FUJI BLIMP. FUJIFILM THE OFFICIAL VIDEO AND AUDIO TAPE OF THE NFL. RICHEY TO KICK IT OFF. ROELL PRESTON FROM THE 2. AND RIGHT NOW FOR AN NFL UPDATE, LET'S RETURN TO JAMES BROWN IN LOS ANGELES. BACK IN SAN FRANCISCO, 10-10, THE PACKERS AND THE 49ers. WITH 6:44 LEFT BEFORE HALFTIME. PACKERS WITH THE BALL. FIRST AND 10. >> THERE'S A PRETTY GOOD MATCHUP RIGHT DOWN HERE IN THE BOTTOM. >> YEP. A LOT OF GOOD MATCHUPS OUT THERE. FLAG ON THE PLAY. >> NUMBER 72. 5 YARDS. IT'S STILL FIRST DOWN. >> DOTSON MOVED. >> MARQUEZ POPE IS ONE OF THE MOST PHYSICAL CORNERS IN THE LEAGUE, AND THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT TO DO IS JUST HAVE HIM TO BE PHYSICAL ALL DAY ON ANTONIO FREEMAN. AND THEN, TO PROTECT HIS AGGRESSIVENESS AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE OR UP SIDE, THEY'RE ALWAYS GONNA RUN A DEFENSIVE BACK IN BEHIND HIM, SO IT'S EITHER GONNA BE MAN OR THE SAFETY HELP BEHIND HIM OR IT'S GONNA BE CLOUD, WHERE IT'S GONNA BE ROTATED TO THAT SIDE IN A ZONE. >> FAVRE BACK TO THROW. UP THE MIDDLE AND OPEN IS ANTONIO FREEMAN. AND FREEMAN... IS FINALLY OUT OF BOUNDS AT THE SAN FRANCISCO 30. >> AND YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENED THE ONE TIME -- IN FACT, WE SAW MARQUEZ POPE DIDN'T GET ON HIM. HE WASN'T ON HIM. HE WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE AND THEY WERE OFF ON HIM. YOU SEE -- THEY'VE BEEN UP ALL DAY AND THEY'VE BEEN HITTING ANTONIO FREEMAN, AND NOW THEY TAKE THE ONE TIME AND THEY LET HIM COME OFF THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. AND BY THE TIME TIM McDONALD GOT UP THERE TO HIT HIM, HE WAS JUST WIDE OPEN. >> WELL, THEY GOT FREEMAN IN THE SLOT. LEVENS FELL DOWN TRYING TO CUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD. >> I THINK THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT, YOU KNOW, THE ADJUSTMENTS THAT THE PACKERS ARE MAKING NOW IS THEY SAW WHAT THEY WERE DOING TO ANTONIO FREEMAN OUTSIDE, SO THEN THEY PUT HIM IN A SLOT, SO NOW INSTEAD OF GETTING POPE ON HIM AND BEING ABLE TO HIT HIM, NOW THEY GET TIM McDONALD ON HIM, AND THEY KNOW THAT TIM McDONALD DOESN'T HAVE THAT QUICKNESS THAT A MARQUEZ POPE HAS. >> SECOND AND 11. THE PACKERS AT THE 32-YARD LINE OF SAN FRANCISCO. HERE'S FAVRE. UP THE MIDDLE. INTENDED FOR CHMURA. MERTON HANKS BROKE IT UP. FREEMAN WAS OPEN. >> YEAH. SEE, HERE'S WHAT THEY'RE DOING RIGHT DOWN HERE. YOU SEE ANTONIO FREEMAN. THAT'S THE WHOLE THING. THAT'S WHEN THEY WANT TO GET UP AND THEY WANT TO HIT HIM AND THEN HAVE THE SAFETY IN HERE DEEP BEHIND HIM. >> WIDE LEFT IS DERRICK MAYES THIS TIME. FREEMAN GOES IN MOTION. AND FAVRE -- THERE'S A BLITZ COMING. TIM McDONALD HIT THE BALL, KNOCKED FAVRE DOWN. >> WE TALKED ABOUT THIS EARLIER. WE HAVE THE SAFETIES -- LeROY BUTLER ON ONE SIDE, AND HERE WE GOT TIM McDONALD ON THE OTHER SIDE, AND YOU SEE THAT HE'S GONNA BE UP HERE. NOW, HE'S JUST READING. NOW, HE'S GONNA TIME THAT THING, AND HE TIMES IT PERFECTLY BECAUSE THEY DON'T COUNT HIM, AND BY THE TIME HE HITS THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, THERE'S NO BLOCKER THERE FOR HIM. SOMETIMES THOSE SAFETIES CAN GET UP THERE TOO SOON AND THEY COUNT HIM. YOU WANT TO STAY OFF WHERE THE OFFENSIVE LINE DOESN'T COUNT YOU. >> 50 YARDS OUT FOR RYAN LONGWELL. WIDE RIGHT. NO GOOD. IT REMAINS 10-10. THE KIND OF GAME YOU EXPECTED? >> IT IS THE KIND OF GAME I EXPECTED. YOU KNOW, THE 49ers SAID THEY WERE GONNA TAKE AWAY ANTONIO FREEMAN, AND, YOU KNOW, ALTHOUGH ANTONIO FREEMAN DID SCORE THE TOUCHDOWN AND JUST CAUGHT A PASS IN THIS LAST SERIES, THEY'VE PRETTY MUCH DONE THAT. >> GARRISON HEARST. >> THE 49ers WANTED TO BE ABLE TO RUN THE BALL AND STAY WITH THE RUN, BUT I THINK THAT SOMEWHERE THEY'RE GONNA HAVE TO SPREAD THIS DEFENSE OUT AND START GETTING TO THEIR WIDE RECEIVERS. IT'S GETTING MORE AND MORE OBVIOUS THAT THEY HAVEN'T GOTTEN THE BALL TO JERRY RICE. AND THEN THOSE GUYS START TO GET DOWN AND THEN THEY LOSE A LITTLE CONFIDENCE, AND IT'S HARD FOR THEM TO STAY IN THE GAME. GUYS LIKE JERRY RICE ARE USED TO CATCHING A LOT OF PASSES. WHEN THEY DON'T GET ANY, THEY HAVE A TOUGH TIME STAYING IN THE GAME. >> SECOND AND 7. THREE-MAN FRONT FOR GREEN BAY. THEY'RE SHOWING BLITZ. YOUNG GETS IT OUT. INCOMPLETE. OWENS WAS THE INTENDED TARGET. >> YOU DON'T SEE THAT OFTEN. YOU DON'T SEE TERRELL OWENS DROP A LOT OF PASSES. YOU DON'T HEAR HIM. THAT'S ALWAYS BEEN THE SIGN OF BAD HANDS, WHEN YOU CAN HEAR HIM. USUALLY THEY -- YOU KNOW, THEY ALWAYS SAID THAT GOOD HANDS ARE HANDS THAT YOU CAN'T HEAR. >> HE'S GOT HUGE, HUGE HANDS ANYWAY. >> YEAH, AND USUALLY WHEN TERRELL OWENS CATCHES A BALL, YOU DON'T HEAR IT. I REMEMBER YEARS AGO WHEN I HAD FRED BILETNIKOFF. USED TO BE ABLE TO STAND THERE ON THE SIDELINE AND DRILL HIM A BALL, AND YOU WOULD NEVER, EVER HEAR IT. >> AGAIN, A THREE-MAN FRONT. PACKERS SHOWING BLITZ. AND HERE THEY COME. YOUNG. OVER THE HEAD OF HIS INTENDED TARGET, WHO'S JERRY RICE. >> THAT'S THE FIRST BALL THAT HE'S THROWN TO JERRY RICE, AND THAT WAS WHAT THE PACKERS WANTED TO DO. THAT'S FRITZ SHURMUR'S IDEA IS NOT LET HIM GET IN RHYTHM. YOU SEE, IF STEVE YOUNG WOULD'VE HAD TIME AND HAD HIS RHYTHM, HE PROBABLY WOULD'VE GOTTEN THE BALL TO JERRY RICE. BUT WATCH THIS. STEVE YOUNG GETS PRESSURED, SO HE HAS TO THROW THE BALL RIGHT NOW. YOU SEE, HE'S NOT READY, AND JERRY RICE WASN'T READY. AND HE THREW THE BALL ABOUT A HALF A BEAT EARLY, AND THE PACKER DEFENSE MADE HIM DO THAT. >> ROBY GETS A LOW SNAP. GETS IT OFF. PRESTON... FUMBLES! PICKS IT UP. AND HE MIGHT'VE LOST IT AGAIN. 49ers ARE SAYING, "WE GOT IT." PACKERS, OF COURSE, ARE SAYING, "WE GOT IT." >> LOOK AT THIS ONE OFFICIAL DOWN HERE ON THE GROUND. HE'S THE GUY THAT'S GONNA HAVE TO DIG IT OUT TO SEE WHO DOES HAVE IT, AND HE JUST GOT PUSHED OUT OF THERE. HE'S STILL DIGGING, THOUGH. THE OFFICIALS HAVEN'T SAID WHO HAS THE BALL OR WHICH WAY. >> THE 49ers STILL MOTIONING, "WE GOT IT." >> THE OFFICIALS ARE STILL TRYING TO FI-- THERE. >> THEY DO. GERRY AUSTIN FINALLY MOTIONED 49er BALL. PRESTON JUGGLED IT, TRIED TO GET IT BACK. >> SEE, HE LETS THE BALL GET TOO CLOSE TO HIS BODY, AND THE BALL HITS HIS SHOULDER PAD. AND THEN, AS HE GOES TO RECOVER THE FUMBLE, HE'S HIT. >> AND RANDY KIRK, WHO SNAPPED THE BALL... >> HE'S THE GUY THAT'S DOWN THERE. WATCH. YOU'RE GONNA SEE, AS HE GOES TO GET IT, RANDY KIRK RIGHT THERE COMES IN. SEE 57? >> YEP. >> I THINK HE'S GONNA END UP WITH IT. >> I THINK HE DOES. FIRST DOWN, SAN FRANCISCO, AT THE 18. YOUNG TO HEARST. A YARD. 49ers HAVE PICKED UP NEARLY 100 YARDS ON THE GROUND TODAY. IN THE OTHER PLAYOFF GAMES AGAINST THE PACKERS, THEY HAD AVERAGED JUST 62.6. SO, ALREADY IN THE FIRST HALF, THEY'VE EXCEEDED THEIR NORMAL TOTAL ON THE GROUND. SECOND AND 9. >> THAT WAS NOLAN CROMWELL TALKING TO PRESTON THERE. I'M SURE THAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, JUST CATCH THE BALL OUT IN FRONT. DON'T LET IT GET THAT CLOSE TO YOU. >> HERE'S STEVE YOUNG TO THROW IT. CHASED. PASS IS INTERCEPTED, I BELIEVE. NO -- YES, IT IS. YES, IT IS. GEORGE KOONCE MADE A DIVING INTERCEPTION. >> AND THAT'S THE SAME THING THAT THEY DID TO STEVE YOUNG ON THAT INCOMPLETE PASS TO JERRY RICE. THEY KNOCKED HIS RHYTHM OFF, AND THAT'S WHY HE THREW THE INTERCEPTION TO KOONCE. JUST WATCH HERE. YOU SEE HE'S GETTING A LITTLE PRESSURE THERE, AND HE THROWS THE BALL WHEN HE DOESN'T WANT TO. AND THEN YOU DON'T SEE EVERYTHING, AND HE TRIES TO GET IT OUTSIDE. HE'S TRYING TO LEAD GARRISON HEARST OUT THERE, AND HE LEADS THE BALL RIGHT TO GEORGE KOONCE. WATCH HIM. YOU SEE, HE GETS THE PRESSURE RIGHT THERE, AND THEN HE TRIES TO GET AWAY FROM THE PRESSURE AND THROW THE BALL. THAT WAS VAUGHN BOOKER WHO WAS RIGHT ON HIM. THEN HE HAD TO THROW AROUND BOOKER, AND IN DOING SO, HE THREW IT TO KOONCE. BUT THAT'S THE SECOND PASS IN A ROW THAT STEVE YOUNG HAS THROWN OUT OF RHYTHM. >> 3:53 LEFT TO PLAY BEFORE THE FIRST HALF COMES TO A CLOSE. FAVRE WITH A LOT OF TIME. GETS IT UP THE MIDDLE. DROPPED -- TYRONE DAVIS THE INTENDED RECEIVER. THERE'S A FLAG ON THE PLAY. >> NOT ONLY A FLAG. THERE'S A HAT. >> AND FAVRE IS DOWN. >> REFEREE THREW HIS FLAG AND HIS HAT. >> PERSONAL FOUL, ROUGHING THE PASSER, NUMBER 56 OF THE DEFENSE. UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT, NUMBER 92 OF THE DEFENSE. BOTH PENALTIES WILL BE ENFORCED. >> THAT SOUNDS LIKE TWO PENALTIES. >> YOU SEE THE FIRST ONE WAS ON NUMBER 56, CHRIS DOLEMAN, FOR HITTING BRETT FAVRE AFTER HE THREW THE BALL. >> AND THE OTHER WAS ON BARKER. >> BARKER FOR UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT. SO NOW, BECAUSE YOU HAVE ONE, BARKER HAD TO GO AFTER SOMEONE AFTER THE PLAY. WHAT THEY DO IS THEY'RE GOING TO TAKE BOTH OF THOSE 15-YARD PENALTIES. THEY DON'T LET YOU HAVE A FREE ONE. >> RIGHT. >> SEE, DOLEMAN GOT IT FOR HITTING BRETT FAVRE LATE, AND THEN ROY BARKER GOT ANOTHER ONE AFTER THAT, SO THAT'LL BE 30 YARDS OF PENALTIES. >> DID THEY GIVE THEM 30 YARDS? BARKER APPARENTLY YELLED AT THE REFEREE. HERE'S THE OTHER 15-YARDER RIGHT NOW. >> NOW THEY JUST GAVE IT TO THEM. >> YEAH. >> BECAUSE THAT'S WHEN -- WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE REFEREE, AND I SAID HE THREW HIS FLAG. THAT WAS FOR DOLEMAN. AND THEN BARKER DID SOMETHING, AND THEN BARKER YELLED AT THE REFEREE, AND THEN HE THREW HIS HAT. >> RIGHT. >> SO THAT HAT WAS THE PENALTY ON BARKER. [ WHISTLE BLOWS ] TIM McDONALD THERE IS GOING UP TO BARKER AND SAYING, "HEY, WE CAN'T DO THAT." WE WERE TALKING ABOUT POISE AND ALL THOSE THINGS, AND THIS IS WHEN YOU NEED THEM. >> WHAT STARTED AS AN INCOMPLETE PASS WAS A 30-YARD GAIN. AT THE EXPENSE OF BRETT FAVRE. THAT'S LEVENS. SHY OF MIDFIELD. A COUPLE YARDS. >> ONE THING ABOUT THIS 49er DEFENSE IS THEY'RE PLAYING THE RUN PRETTY WELL. >> YES, THEY ARE. >> IF THEY'VE HAD A PROBLEM ALL YEAR, IT'S PLAYING AGAINST THE RUN, BUT THEY'RE PLAYING IT PRETTY WELL TODAY. THEY REALLY MISS BRYANT YOUNG. I MEAN, BRYANT YOUNG WAS, YOU KNOW, THEIR CENTER, THEIR TACKLE, THE CENTER OF THEIR DEFENSE AND THE STRENGTH OF THEIR DEFENSE AND ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN FOOTBALL, AND YOU'RE TRYING TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS PLAYING WITHOUT HIM. >> AND HE WAS A STEADY ONE. HERE'S FAVRE BACK TO THROW. TALKING ABOUT A TOUGH GUY. HERE'S A PASS COMPLETE TO ROBERT BROOKS. AND BROOKS GETS DOWN TO THE 49er 25. STOPPED BY WOODALL. >> SEE, THAT'S THE THING WITH THOSE ZONES. ONCE YOU GET INSIDE -- WATCH, HE'S GONNA GET INSIDE. ONCE HE GETS INSIDE THE CORNER HERE, AND YOU GET INSIDE OF DARNELL WALKER, YOU SEE RIGHT THERE. NOW HE GETS INSIDE. NOW HE HAS THIS BIG HOLE HERE IN THE ZONE. THAT'S THE BIG THING. DARNELL WALKER HAS TO KEEP HIM FROM GETTING TO THE INSIDE. WHEN ROBERT BROOKS GOT INSIDE THAT QUICKLY, THEN HE COULD GO UP THE FIELD, AND THE NEXT THING HE WAS GONNA FIND WAS A BIG HOLE IN THAT ZONE AWAY FROM THEIR ROTATION. >> 24-YARD GAIN. FIRST DOWN, GREEN BAY. FAVRE, SCREEN PASS TO LEVENS. WELL READ AND PLAYED WELL BY BRENTSON BUCKNER. >> SO MANY TEAMS ARE THROWING THAT SCREEN THAT THE DEFENSES ARE STARTING TO PLAY THE SCREEN BETTER THAN THE OFFENSES ARE RUNNING IT. WE SAW ONE EARLIER WHERE GILBERT BROWN JUST RAN DOWN THE LINE. THAT TIME IT WAS BUCKNER. ONCE THEY SEE IT, THEY JUST RUN RIGHT DOWN THE LINE. THEY STOP RUSHING THE PASSER. >> 2-MINUTE WARNING. PACKERS' BALL, SECOND DOWN AT ABOUT THE 29-YARD LINE OF SAN FRANCISCO. MIKE HOLMGREN. CHARLES HALEY IS IN ON DEFENSE TO RUSH THE PASSER. FAVRE THROWS. COMPLETE. THAT'S TO ANTONIO FREEMAN. DON'T FORGET TO STAY WITH US FOR THE HALFTIME REPORT. J.B., TERRY, HOWIE, AND CRIS. FIRST-HALF ANALYSIS. NEW ENGLAND-JACKSONVILLE HIGHLIGHTS. FOX SPORTS TICKER, UP-TO-THE-SECOND STATS. THE VISA HALFTIME REPORT. STAY WITH US. THIRD AND 1 AT THE 49er 17 1/2. >> THIS IS WHERE YOU EXPECT DORSEY LEVENS TO GET IT. >> DORSEY LEVENS HAS IT. AND HAS THE FIRST DOWN. ANTHONY PETERSON. >> BECAUSE YOU KNEW THAT IF EARLIER IN THE GAME MIKE HOLMGREN HAD A FOURTH-DOWN SITUATION IN THE RED-ZONE AREA AND HE WENT FOR IT ON FOURTH DOWN AND RAN IT TO DORSEY LEVENS, SO YOU KNEW ON THIRD AND SHORT HE WAS GONNA RUN IT TO DORSEY LEVENS. IT WAS A GOOD IDEA ON THAT FOURTH-DOWN SITUATION, THEN IT'S A PRETTY GOOD IDEA ON THAT THIRD-DOWN SITUATION. >> LAST-SECOND SUBSTITUTIONS COMING IN FOR BOTH OF THEM. LEVENS WILL BE THE LONE SET BACK. THEY PLAY TWO TIGHT ENDS NOW. >> THIS IS WHERE THEY LIKE TO GET THE BALL TO TY DAVIS. >> RIGHT. HERE COMES THE SCREEN PASS TO LEVENS WITH TWO BLOCKERS IN FRONT. DORSEY LEVENS TO THE 2. >> YOU SEE THE GUY THAT MADE THE TACKLE WAS JUNIOR BRYANT. WE WERE TALKING ABOUT HOW THESE DEFENSIVE TACKLES READ THESE THINGS. USUALLY THEY GET IT AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, BUT HERE'S A SCREEN. YOU SEE HERE'S LEVENS IN HERE. HE WORKS OUTSIDE, AND BY THE TIME NUMBER 90, JUNIOR BRYANT, GETS DOWN THERE, DORSEY LEVENS IS DARN NEAR TO THE GOAL LINE. >> DOWN TO THE 2. >> LOOK AT THIS. YOU SEE THE SIDE OF THE SCREEN, YOU GET THE DEFENDER'S HANDS DOWN BY CUTTING HIM, AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THE RIGHT TACKLE, EARL DOTSON, DID. >> 35 SECONDS LEFT. AND LEVENS... HAMMERS TO THE END ZONE. THE PACKERS AGAIN LEAD IT. >> THAT'S WHERE THEY GOT THEIR OTHER TOUCHDOWN. THAT'S WHERE THEY DECIDED THAT IF THERE'S A WEAKNESS IN THAT AREA, IT'S THE LEFT SIDE OF THAT 49er DEFENSE. IT'S RIGHT IN HERE. THIS IS WHAT THEY'RE GONNA DO. THEY'RE GONNA GET BEHIND DOTSON, CHMURA. THEY GET THE EXTRA BLOCK THERE. AND DORSEY LEVENS JUST POWERS IT IN. BOTH TEAMS SAY THAT THEY WANTED TO RUN THE BALL TODAY, AND THEY HAVE SUCCESSFULLY IN THIS FIRST HALF. >> LONGWELL'S EXTRA POINT IS GOOD. TIMMERMAN ALSO INVOLVED IN THE BLOCKING. GOT A GOOD BLOCK ON LEVENS' TOUCHDOWN RUN. >> WHAT A STORY THIS GUY HAS BEEN. EDDIE DeBARTOLO. BEEN THE OWNER OF THE 49ers FOR SO MANY YEARS AND SUCCESSFUL. I MEAN, THE ONE THING THROUGH ALL THEIR SUCCESS THAT HAS BEEN CONSTANT HAS BEEN EDDIE DeBARTOLO. HE'S ON THE SIDELINES NOW, BUT THEY SAY THAT, YOU KNOW, BY NEXT MONTH THAT HE SHOULD BE REINSTATED AS THE OWNER. >> HE HAS REMAINED THE NUMBER-ONE FAN. >> WELL, AND HE'S PROBABLY REMAINED MORE THAN A NUMBER-ONE FAN. [ CHUCKLES ] HE'S PROBABLY -- WE'VE KNOWN EDDIE DeBARTOLO -- THE DeBARTOLO CORPORATION STILL OWNS THE 49ers, AND EDDIE DeBARTOLO, OF COURSE, IS AN OWNER OF THE DeBARTOLO CORPORATION, BUT HE'S BEEN VERY, VERY GOOD FOR THIS FRANCHISE AND ITS PLAYERS. McQUARTERS TAKES THE LINE-DRIVE KICKOFF FROM LONGWELL. PACKER COVERAGE IS GOOD. HE GOT BACK TO THE 21. BRADFORD DOWN TO MAKE THE STOP. DON'T FORGET, COMING UP ON THE VISA HALFTIME REPORT, J.B., TERRY, AND HOWIE. FIRST-HALF ANALYSIS. NEW ENGLAND-JACKSONVILLE HIGHLIGHTS. JACKSONVILLE WON, OF COURSE. FOX SPORTS TICKER, UP-TO-THE-SECOND STATS OF ALL THE GAMES THAT TOOK PLACE THIS WEEKEND. >> PROBABLY WHEN THEY ANALYZE THE FIRST HALF OF THIS GAME, THEY'RE PROBABLY GONNA ASK A QUESTION. WHERE HAS JERRY RICE BEEN? >> YEAH. >> AND PART OF IT IS STEVE YOUNG HASN'T REALLY GOTTEN INTO THE RHYTHM TO THROW TO HIS WIDE RECEIVERS, AND THE OTHER PART OF IT IS GOOD PACKER COVERAGE. >> 49ers ONLY HAVE ONE TIME-OUT. THERE'S THE SAN FRANCISCO SCREEN PASS TO HEARST. REGGIE WHITE HURDLED SCRAFFORD, WHO WAS TRYING TO BLOCK HIM. >> IT LOOKS LIKE THE 49ers JUST DON'T WANT TO MAKE A MISTAKE HERE. WATCH THIS. HERE'S BIG OLD GOGAN COMING OUT HERE. HE'S LOOKING FOR LeROY BUTLER, NUMBER 36. BUTLER SEES HIM, PUTS A FAKE ON HIM, AND GETS BACK INSIDE. HE KNOWS ONE THING. HE WASN'T GONNA STEP UP AND TAKE ON KEVIN GOGAN. >> IF YOU'RE A BLOCKER LIKE THAT, THE ONE THING YOU CAN'T DO IS HESITATE AND START LOOKING FOR POSITION. YOU GOT TO THROW. >> AND THE TOUGH THING ABOUT BEING A BLOCKER IS YOU CAN'T GO DOWNFIELD UNTIL THE RECEIVER CATCHES THE BALL. SO YOU GET OUT THERE AND YOU HAVE TO WAIT AND WAIT AND WAIT, AND USUALLY THE GUY WHO CATCHES THE SCREEN, THE RUNNING BACK IN THAT CASE, WILL SAY, "GO!" ONCE HE GOT IT. AND I THINK BIG OLD GOGAN WAS WAITING FOR "GO!" AND BUTLER WAS PLAYING OFF BIG OLD GOGAN. >> FRITZ SHURMUR SIGNALING FROM THE SIDELINE. SECOND AND 3. 16 SECONDS LEFT. THE 49ers OUT OF TIME-OUTS. YOUNG BACK TO THROW IT. CHASED AND DOWNED BY SANTANA DOTSON FROM ONE SIDE AND BERNARDO HARRIS FROM THE OTHER. >> YEAH, THAT'S STEVE YOUNG'S FAULT THERE. HE HAD A BLITZ COMING FROM HIS LEFT, AND HE HAD A PRETTY GOOD BLOCK BY TERRY KIRBY, AND HE JUST RUNS RIGHT INTO IT. WATCH -- THE BLITZ IS GONNA COME HERE. TERRY KIRBY STEPS UP. SEE, HE MAKES THE BLOCK THERE. THAT'S NOT BAD. NOW WATCH STEVE YOUNG. HE JUST RUNS RIGHT INTO THAT SACK. >> THAT'S THE END OF THE FIRST HALF. READY TO START THE THIRD QUARTER WITH THE PACKERS LEADING SAN FRANCISCO, 17-10. THE 49ers WILL KICK IT OFF. BACK DEEP FOR GREEN BAY -- ROELL PRESTON AND BRADFORD. THERE'S GARRISON HEARST ON HIS BIKE, KEEPING THAT HAMSTRING WARM, OR ATTEMPTING TO. THE QUARTERBACKS -- BRETT FAVRE 11 OUT OF 17, 136 YARDS. A TOUCHDOWN. STEVE YOUNG 6 OF 13, 51 YARDS. A TOUCHDOWN AND TWO INTERCEPTIONS. J.J. STOKES GETTING STRETCHED. RICHEY TO KICK IT OFF. PRESTON AT THE 5. ROELL PRESTON DOESN'T MAKE IT BACK TO THE 20. THE 49er COVERAGE IS VERY, VERY GOOD. JEFF POSEY. RIGHT NOW LET'S SEND YOU DOWN TO THE SIDELINE -- RON PITTS. >> ALL RIGHT, PAT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. TALKED TO STEVE MARIUCCI. HE SAID THEY WOULDN'T TRY TO CHANGE ANYTHING IN THEIR OFFENSE. I ASKED HIM, "WOULD YOU TRY TO GET THE BALL MORE TO NUMBER 80?" HE SAID, "WE'RE GONNA CONTINUE TO RUN OUR OFFENSE. I DON'T HAVE ANY MAJOR CONCERNS, ANYTHING THAT'S REALLY WORRYING ME RIGHT NOW. JUST GOT TO KEEP PLAYING FOOTBALL." HE DID WANT TO GET THAT RUN GAME GOING A LITTLE BETTER. MIKE HOLMGREN SEEMED VERY RELAXED. HE SAID, "WE'RE GONNA TRY TO MOVE ANTONIO FREEMAN AROUND TO GET HIM OPEN A LITTLE BIT MORE." BUT HE WANTS TO KEEP HIS RUN GAME GOING, AS WELL. HE DOESN'T BUY ANYTHING ABOUT NUMBER 80 NOT BEING INVOLVED IN THE GAME PLAN MORE IN THE SECOND HALF. >> LEVENS... >> PAT, BACK UP TO YOU. >> ...HAMMERS FOR 5 YARDS. THANK YOU, RON. >> YOU KNOW, AS LONG AS WHAT BOTH COACHES SAY IS TRUE, AS LONG AS THE SCORE STAYS CLOSE AND THEY HAVE TIME ON THEIR SIDE, I MEAN, THERE'S A POINT WHERE YOU DON'T WANT TO GET AWAY FROM ANYTHING. YOU KNOW, YOU DON'T WANT TO GET AWAY FROM YOUR GAME PLAN. THEN IN A GAME WHEN TIME STARTS RUNNING OUT AND YOU ARE BEHIND, THEN YOU HAVE TO GET AWAY OR GO TO A DIFFERENT GAME PLAN. >> SECOND AND 5. PASS IS DROPPED BY CHMURA. INCOMPLETE. MIKE HOLMGREN LAID OUT SOME GOALS FOR US BEFORE THE GAME EVER STARTED. 120 RUSHING YARDS, NO TURNOVERS. NO LONG PLAYS. CONTROL THEM ON THE SPECIAL TEAMS. THEY'VE PRETTY WELL DONE THAT. AND THAT'S WHAT THEY'VE DONE. TWO TURNOVERS. 79 RUSHING YARDS. THE DEFENSE HAS GOTTEN ITS GOAL. THIRD DOWN. >> AND THE BIG THING ABOUT THE DEFENSE -- WHEN THEY GOT THOSE TURNOVERS, THEN THEY WENT AND SCORED A TOUCHDOWN, THAT LAST ONE. >> ANTONIO FREEMAN ON THE REVERSE. DOES GET ENOUGH FOR A FIRST DOWN OUTSIDE. HE HAD TO CROSS THE 30 AND HE DID. >> I'LL SAY THIS -- THAT THE GREEN BAY PACKERS ARE DOING A BETTER JOB OF KEEPING ANTONIO FREEMAN IN THIS GAME THAN THE 49ers ARE OF KEEPING OR GETTING JERRY RICE IN IT, BECAUSE, LIKE MIKE HOLMGREN TOLD RON PITTS, THAT THEY HAVE A PLAN FOR ANTONIO FREEMAN AS AN OUTSIDE RECEIVER, "SO WE'RE GONNA MOVE HIM AROUND SO THEY DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHERE HE IS." AND THEN THEY RUN HIM ON A PLAY LIKE THEY JUST DID, ON THE REVERSE, TO GET THE BALL IN HIS HANDS. >> CHARLES HALEY IN THE LINEUP FOR THE 49er DEFENSE. HERE'S LEVENS. >> CHARLES HALEY MAKES THE TACKLE. >> YEAH. >> YOU KNOW, THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT CHARLES HALEY, IS HE WAS A GOOD PLAYER AGAINST THE RUN. HE WAS KIND OF AN UNDERSIZED GREAT PASS RUSHER, AND YOU THOUGHT THAT HE COULDN'T PLAY THE RUN. THAT TIME, HE JUST TOOK ON ROSS VERBA WITH BOTH HANDS, JUST STOOD RIGHT THERE AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, AND MADE THE TACKLE. AND, YOU KNOW, THAT HAS TO BE PART OF THE PACKERS' PLAN, TOO. "WHEN HALEY'S IN THERE, LET'S TEST HIM OUT. HE HASN'T PLAYED IN A COUPLE YEARS. LET'S RUN RIGHT AT HIM." WELL, THAT ONE DIDN'T WORK. >> HE'S HAD BACK SURGERY. AS YOU SAY, HE HASN'T PLAYED IN A WHILE. BEEN WORKING OUT, BUT THAT'S NOT THE SAME AS BEING HIT. SECOND DOWN. 49ers SHOWING BLITZ. FAVRE FAKES TO LEVENS, GOES DEEP. HOW DID HE CATCH IT? THERE'S A FLAG ON THE PLAY. IT'S DERRICK MAYES WHO MADE THE TURNAROUND COMPLETION POSSIBLE. >> THE OTHER GUY THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE BACK THERE UNDERNEATH WAS CHARLES HALEY. YOU KNOW, HOW WOULD HE EVEN LEARN THAT? HE DIDN'T COME IN UNTIL YESTERDAY. BUT THAT WAS ONE OF THOSE ZONE BLITZES. >> INTERFERENCE -- NUMBER 23 OF THE DEFENSE. PENALTY IS DECLINED. PASS WAS COMPLETED. FIRST DOWN. >> MARQUEZ POPE. 20-YARD GAIN. >> AND MARQUEZ POPE -- HE'S OUT HERE ON DERRICK MAYES NOW. NOW, AFTER 5 YARDS, YOU CAN'T BUMP, AND, OF COURSE, ONCE THE BALL'S IN THE AIR, YOU CAN'T TOUCH HIM. BUT WHAT A CATCH HE MADE. WATCH CHARLES HALEY HERE. HE'S GONNA DROP OUT. YOU SEE HE STARTS. AND THEN THEY BLITZ FROM THE LEFT SIDE, AND HE DROPS TO HELP MARQUEZ POPE. AND ON THE DEEP ONE, YOU CAN'T HELP HIM. >> AND THAT'S NOT WHY THEY BROUGHT HIM HERE, EITHER. >> NO, NO. >> HERE'S FAVRE TO LEVENS. FLAG ON THE PLAY, AND THAT'S IN THE AREA OF HOLDING. >> BUT, AS YOU SAID, THAT WAS A HECK OF A CATCH BY DERRICK MAYES. HE WAS GONNA GET IT ANYWAY BECAUSE THERE WAS PASS INTERFERENCE, BUT HE STILL MADE A HECK OF A CATCH. >> HOLDING -- NUMBER 62 OF THE OFFENSE. 10 YARDS. REPEAT FIRST DOWN. >> WATCH THIS. THIS IS MAYES' CATCH. >> YEAH, I MEAN, HE IS DOWN. HE HAS SLID DOWN AND THEN HE'S ON HIS BACK AND HE CATCHES THAT BALL. >> JUST GOT HIS HAND UP, AND THE BALL FROM FAVRE CAME AND HIT IT. >> YEAH, HE JUST CAME OFF KNEE SURGERY. >> YEAH. >> I WAS TALKING TO HIM YESTERDAY, AND HE SAID THAT HE'S FINALLY STARTING TO FEEL NORMAL, HE SAID, BUT HE HASN'T -- YOU KNOW, COMING OFF THAT KNEE SURGERY, HE SAID HE HASN'T BEEN ANYTHING CLOSE TO NORMAL YET. BUT HE SURE MADE A HECK OF A CATCH THERE. >> DIDN'T HE? HAND-OFF, LEVENS. NOTHING DOING. LEVENS LOST A YARD. WOODALL AND HALEY CONVERGED. >> YOU KNOW, THE 49ers HAVE A FEELING THAT DORSEY LEVENS RUNS BETTER TO HIS RIGHT, SO WHAT THEY WANT TO DO IS GANG UP ON THE RIGHT SIDE FOR THE RUN, BECAUSE THEY DON'T THINK THAT HE RUNS AS WELL TO THE LEFT AS HE DOES TO THE RIGHT -- OR THAT HE RUNS BETTER TO THE RIGHT THAN TO THE LEFT, SO THEY WERE GONNA GANG UP AND PLAY DORSEY LEVENS' RUN AND RUN TO HIS RIGHT, OR THEIR DEFENSIVE LEFT. >> SECOND AND 21. CHMURA AGAIN IN MOTION. FAVRE. PASS IS PICKED OFF BY LEE WOODALL. WOODALL KNOCKED OUT OF BOUNDS BY TIMMERMAN. >> I'LL TELL YOU -- YOU HAVE TO GIVE -- FOR WHATEVER -- THE 49ers ARE PAYING CHARLES HALEY $10,000 TO PLAY THIS GAME, AND HE JUST EARNED HIS $10,000 ON THAT PLAY, BECAUSE HE'S THE GUY THAT GETS THERE THAT MAKES BRETT FAVRE THROW THIS INTERCEPTION. WATCH HIM RIGHT HERE. HE'S COMING ON VERBA AND HE'S RIGHT THERE. YOU SEE? HE'S THE GUY THAT SPINS RIGHT IN BRETT FAVRE'S FACE AS HE THROWS THE BALL. NOW, THAT IS A $10,000 PLAY. >> AND HERE COMES WILKINS TAKING A SHOT AT FAVRE, AND FAVRE -- >> AND THERE COMES HALEY TO BREAK IT UP. I KNOW WHAT WILKINS IS THINKING. IT'S THAT OLD RULE THAT, AFTER THROWING AN INTERCEPTION, GO AFTER THE QUARTERBACK, BECAUSE NOW HE'S NOT THE QUARTERBACK ANYMORE. HE'S A DEFENDER. >> HERE'S GARRISON HEARST. ACROSS THE 30 TO ABOUT THE 28. >> THAT WAS THE GUY THAT THEY WERE WORRIED ABOUT, YOU KNOW, IS LEE WOODALL, BECAUSE THEY SAY THAT WHAT HE DOES IS -- A LOT OF TIMES, HE'LL GET IN POSITION TO TAKE AWAY THAT SLANT. AND BRETT FAVRE TALKED ABOUT THAT -- IF THEY TAKE AWAY THE SLANT, HE HAS TO GO TO THE FADE. THEY TOOK AWAY THE SLANT, AND HE WENT FOR THE SLANT. BUT, AGAIN, CHARLES HALEY WAS RIGHT IN HIS FACE AND MADE HIM THROW THAT BALL OUT OF RHYTHM. >> HEARST. GARRISON HEARST TO THE 12. STOPPED BY BRIAN WILLIAMS. IF HE HAS A BAD HAMSTRING, IT GOT WELL. >> EITHER THAT OR HE'S JUST GUTTING IT OUT. HE HAS A BAD HAMSTRING AND HE'S JUST PLAYING. BUT, BOY, DID HE GET IN THERE TO THAT LEFT SIDE. AGAIN, IT'S BEEN RAY BROWN OVER THERE AND THE JOB THAT HE'S BEEN DOING BLOCKING GREG CLARK. I MEAN, THEY'RE REALLY DOING A JOB. WATCH RAY BROWN THERE. HE GETS A JOB -- HE GETS A JOB -- I MEAN, HE GETS A BLOCK. NOW, MARC EDWARDS WAS THE LEAD GUY. HE WENT THROUGH TO LEAD, AND THERE WAS NO ONE THERE TO BLOCK. THE LINE HAD CLEANED OUT THAT RIGHT SIDE. >> FIRST AND 10 AT THE 11. KIRBY. TRIPPED UP AT ABOUT THE 8. >> YOU KNOW, YOU THINK OF THIS GAME BEFORE AND YOU THINK OF, YOU KNOW, STEVE YOUNG AND BRETT FAVRE AND IT'S GONNA BE ABOUT QUARTERBACKS AND PASSING AND ANTONIO FREEMAN AND JERRY RICE, ABOUT CATCHING. AND HERE IT IS -- IT'S JUST A RUN SCRIMMAGE. IT'S ABOUT RUNNING AND TURNOVERS IS WHAT THIS GAME IS ABOUT. >> SECOND AND 7. SEE IF YOUNG PUTS IT UP HERE. >> YOU KNOW WHERE HE'S VERY EFFECTIVE DOWN HERE WHEN HE PUTS IT UP? THAT BOOTLEG, WHERE HE HAS THE OPTION OF RUNNING OR THROWING. >> HEARST IS THE DEEP BACK. WIDE OPEN IS OWENS. AND DROPPED IT. HE COULDN'T SEE IT. HE COULDN'T SEE IT. IT CAME RIGHT OUT OF THE SUN. >> YEAH, BUT WHAT A MOVE HE MADE ON CRAIG NEWSOME. AND THEN, AS YOU SAID, THAT BALL IS RIGHT INTO THE SUN. BUT DID HE BEAT NEWSOME ON THAT. WATCH HIM. AND STEVE YOUNG GETS PRETTY GOOD PASS PROTECTION THERE AND HE THROWS A PERFECT PASS. >> YOU COULD TELL HE LOST IT. >> YEAH, AND NOT ONLY CAN YOU TELL THAT HE LOST IT, BUT HE TELLS EVERYONE THAT HE LOST IT. AFTER HE DROPS THAT BALL RIGHT THERE, HE LOOKS RIGHT UP INTO THE SUN AND SAYS THAT HE COULDN'T SEE IT. OOH, THAT'S SEVEN POINTS. >> YES, SIR. YOUNG RIGHT UP THE MIDDLE TO CLARK. TOUCHDOWN. HIS SECOND OF THE DAY. >> YEP, THAT'S THAT BOOTLEG WE WERE TALKING ABOUT. HE JUST MADE THAT FAKE AND THEN HE JUST STOOD BACK THERE AND FOUND GREG CLARK COMING ON A CROSS. WATCH HIM HERE. YOU SEE HE MAKES THAT FAKE. HERE'S CLARK COMING ON A CROSS. NO ONE PICKS HIM UP. STEVE YOUNG SEES HIM AND WHAP! GREG CLARK'S BEEN PRETTY GOOD DOWN THERE AROUND THAT LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. WE SAW EARLIER WHERE HE FELL DOWN AND THEN GOT UP AND MAKE A PLAY. >> I THINK HE MIGHT HAVE DONE IT AGAIN. >> A GOOD PLAY FAKE THERE BY STEVE YOUNG. HE DID. SO, GREG CLARK IS GONNA BE PROUD OF HIMSELF, CATCHING TOUCHDOWNS AND FOOLING THE PACKERS AGAIN. >> HE'S BECOME A THESPIAN. THE EXTRA POINT IS GOOD. >> YEAH, WATCH THIS. PAT, HERE'S GREG CLARK HERE. NOW WATCH THIS TRICK. THERE'S NO ONE TO BLOCK, SO HE JUST KIND OF FALLS DOWN AND GETS UP AND RUNS ACROSS. HE GOES DOWN THERE LIKE IT'S THE OLD CRAB BLOCK. YOU SEE HIM FALL DOWN LIKE THAT? THERE WAS NO ONE TO BLOCK, BUT HE STILL FOOLED THEM AND STILL GOT THE TOUCHDOWN. >> A VERY GOOD ACT. 17-ALL. >> WHAT'D YOU CALL HIM? A THESPIAN? >> THESPIAN, YEAH. >> THESPIAN? >> YES. >> MUNDANE. >> [ CHUCKLES ] ROYAL PRESTON STILL ON HIS FEET. OUT OF BOUNDS AT ABOUT THE 33-YARD LINE. PROUD OF HIMSELF. 17-17. 8:50 LEFT IN THE THIRD. 17-17. FAVRE DROPS. GETS AWAY FROM PRESSURE. INCOMPLETE. INTENDED FOR MAYES, WHO COULDN'T COME DOWN WITH IT. >> AND THIS IS THE THING THAT -- EVERY TIME THEY PLAY, THIS HAS BEEN THE STORY. GREEN BAY'S HAD THREE TURNOVERS, AND SAN FRANCISCO'S HAD THREE. SO, THAT'S PRETTY GOOD WHEN YOU CAN BALANCE THEM. WATCH THE HIT THAT DERRICK MAYES TAKES HERE. HE'S GONNA COME TO THE INSIDE. AND WATCH HIM AS HE -- NOW, BRETT FAVRE IS THROWING THE BALL ACROSS THE FIELD. NOW, WHEN THE BALL GOES ACROSS THE FIELD, SOMETHING BAD USUALLY HAPPENS TO YOUR GUY. >> AND MAYES IS ON THE SIDELINE. >> BECAUSE HE MET MARQUEZ POPE. >> JERRY RICE LEADING THE CHEERS. FAVRE DROPS. CAN'T FIND ANYBODY. AND DOWN HE GOES. CHRIS DOLEMAN, AROUND THE CORNER, KEPT COMING, BUT THERE WAS SOMEBODY FROM THE OTHER SIDE THAT FORCED HIM. >> HERE IT IS. IT'S COMING RIGHT HERE. YOU SEE ROSS VERBA. HE'S STARTING TO MAKE THE PLAY. AND IT'S RIGHT HERE. SEE, HE GETS THE SPIN. AND HE'S THE GUY THAT MAKES IT HAPPEN BEFORE IT HAPPENED. GABE WILKINS WAS THE FIRST GUY. AND THEN, OF COURSE, THE OTHER PART THAT GOES WITH THAT IS THE 49ers HAD GOOD COVERAGE DOWNFIELD. LOOK AT THAT ON TRIP. SEE, NOW, DOLEMAN COMES FROM ONE SIDE. GABE WILKINS COMES FROM THE OTHER SIDE. HERE'S CHRIS DOLEMAN, 56. HE COMES IN THERE LATE. IT WAS GABE WILKINS THAT MADE IT HAPPEN AND FLUSHED HIM OUT INTO CHRIS DOLEMAN. >> THIRD AND 20. FAVRE ASKING FOR TIME-OUT. BACK IN SAN FRANCISCO. PAT SUMMERALL WITH JOHN MADDEN. 17-17 TIE. >> 49ers WERE IN THEIR DIME DEFENSE, SIX DEFENSIVE BACKS. THE LAST TIME THEY WERE IN THIS, THEY GOT AN INTERCEPTION. >> FAKE TO LEVENS. THROWS TO LEVENS. TO THE 30. FLAG ON THE PLAY. >> YEAH, THAT'S GONNA BE A LATE HIT. THAT'S GONNA BE AGAINST THE PACKERS. I THINK IT WAS MERTON HANKS WHO WAS JUST STANDING THERE, AND SOMEONE CAME UP AND HIT HIM. HE WASN'T BOTHERING ANYONE. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT HE'S SAYING THERE. THE PLAY WAS OVER, AND MERTON HANKS -- HE'S EXPLAINING IT TO DORSEY LEVENS. "I'M JUST STANDING THERE. I'M NOT BOTHERING ANYONE. AND A GUY COMES UP AND HITS ME." >> I THINK IT WAS DELLENBACH. GERRY AUSTIN THE REFEREE. PERSONAL FOUL AGAINST GREEN BAY. >> KEN NORTON IS ASKING WHETHER THEY SHOULD PUT IT BACK OR NOT. I WOULD THINK A 15-YARD PENALTY -- I WOULD PUT THEM BACK. >> I WOULD THINK SO. >> WELL, YOU KNOW, ALL YOU DO, THEN, IS GIVE BRETT FAVRE ANOTHER SHOT AT YOU. STEVE MARIUCCI IS LOOKING WHERE THE PLAY WOULD HAVE ENDED, WHERE THE, YOU KNOW, PLAY -- SO, IT'S FROM THE 30-YARD LINE. SO IT WOULD BE BACK TO THE 15-YARD LINE OR MAKE THEM PUNT FROM THE 30. I'D PUT THEM BACK TO THE 15. I THINK STEVE MARIUCCI WANTS THAT GUY THROWN OUT OF THE GAME IS WHAT HE WANTS. >> I THINK HE PROBABLY DOES, YEAH. >> PERSONAL FOUL -- NUMBER 67. PENALTY IS DECLINED. FOURTH DOWN. >> DELLENBACH IS CORRECT. >> YEP. HERE'S DELLENBACH RIGHT HERE. NOW, YOU'RE GONNA SEE MERTON HANKS IS JUST STANDING THERE. THE PLAY IS OVER. HE JUST COMES UP AND HITS HIM, KNOCKS HIM DOWN. AND THERE'S NO REASON OR EXCUSE OR ANYTHING FOR THAT. THAT WAS JUST PLAIN OUTRIGHT STUPIDITY, AND FOR A 14-YEAR VET TO DO THAT, YOU WONDER, "WHAT THE HECK'S THAT ALL ABOUT?" >> McQUARTERS -- LANDETA KICKING TO McQUARTERS. GOOD KICK. McQUARTERS STOPS AND STAYS IN BOUNDS. BUT NO PLACE TO GO. >> THAT'S WHY I WOULD HAVE BACKED THEM UP. >> YEP. HAVE YOU EVER RIDDEN IN ONE OF THOSE CABLE CARS? >> YOU KNOW, THAT'S -- OH, YEAH, YEAH. I'VE JUMPED THEM. YOU KNOW, WHAT YOU CALL JUMPING THEM IS WHEN YOU DON'T PAY. BUT, YOU KNOW, THAT RINGING THE BELL IS A BIG THING, AND THEY HAVE A CONTEST HERE IN SAN FRANCISCO. >> GARRISON HEARST JUST BROKE A TACKLE, RAN OVER SOMEBODY. FINALLY IS HERDED OUT OF BOUNDS SHORT OF MIDFIELD. >> WATCH OUT FOR THAT ACTION ON THE SIDELINE. J.J. STOKES, YOU DON'T WANT TO BE HITTING LeROY BUTLER OUTSIDE. BUT I'LL TELL YOU -- THIS GARRISON HEARST IS REALLY SOMETHING. >> YEAH, HE REALLY IS. >> I MEAN, HE COULDN'T PRACTICE. HE HAD A PULLED HAMSTRING. AND THE WAY THAT HE'S RUNNING TODAY -- HE JUST HAS TO BE GUTTING IT UP. HERE HE IS. I MEAN, HE'S GONNA START TO THE LEFT. EDWARDS GIVES HIM A GOOD LEAD BLOCK ON THAT SIDE. HE JUST RUNS OVER RIGHT THERE -- AND YOU COULD SEE THAT THE PULL DOESN'T LET HIM REALLY STRETCH OUT AND GET HIS SPEED. BUT WATCH THIS STRAIGHT-ARM HERE. I MEAN, HE JUST GOES BOINK AND HE JUST KNOCKS LeROY BUTLER RIGHT OFF. I MEAN, HE STAYS WITH HIM AND JUST FINALLY GETS HIM OFF AND THEN JUST KEEPS RUNNING. >> BEFORE THAT, HE HAD JUST -- SHARPER HAD JUST BOUNCED OFF OF HIM. AND I'M STILL NOT SURE WHO THAT IS DOWN. >> AND THAT FREE SAFETY -- YOU KNOW, HE HAS TO BE ABLE TO MAKE THAT TACKLE. AND THAT'S A -- YOU KNOW, FREE SAFETY HAS TO BE ABLE TO COVER, BUT HE ALSO HAS TO BE ABLE TO TACKLE. THE GUY THAT WAS DOWN WAS CRAIG NEWSOME. >> WHO HAD BEEN QUESTIONABLE, AT ONE TIME THIS WEEK, ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT HE'D BE ABLE TO PLAY. >> AND A COUPLE WEEKS AGO, HE WENT DOWN ON ARTIFICIAL TURF AND HAD A GASH IN HIS KNEE. I GUESS IT WAS REALLY SOMETHING. DIDN'T PLAY LAST WEEK. >> RIGHT. >> HE'S PLAYED WELL IN THIS GAME. >> LOOK AT THIS. 13 CARRIES, 112 YARDS, AVERAGING 8.6 YARDS FOR GARRISON HEARST. >> AND I THINK THE MOST IMPRESSIVE THING IS THAT HE'S OUT THERE ON JUST ONE HAMSTRING AND THE WAY THAT HE JUST RAN OVER DARREN SHARPER ON THAT LAST PLAY. >> HEARST AGAIN. [ WHISTLES BLOWING ] FLAG ON THE PLAY FROM THE FAR SIDE. THEY STOP HIM AFTER A YARD. >> LOOK AT BIG OLD GOGAN THERE. DID YOU SEE HIM? HIM ON SANTANA DOTSON? >> PRIOR TO THE SNAP, FALSE START -- NUMBER 85. 5 YARDS. IT'S STILL FIRST DOWN. >> THE ACTOR STARTED TOO SOON. >> YEAH, THE THESPIAN. HE'D BEEN FAKING ALL THOSE BLOCKS AND GETTING TOUCHDOWNS TODAY. AND, THIS TIME, HE MOVED A LITTLE TOO SOON. THAT'S GONNA BE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THIS 49er OFFENSE IN THE FUTURE, BECAUSE YOU KNOW THAT THEY HAVE THE WIDE RECEIVERS, AND THEN THEY HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, GET BACK TO THAT TIGHT END, YOU KNOW, THE WAY THEY DID WITH BRENT JONES FOR SO MANY YEARS. >> SHARPER HAS REPLACED NEWSOME AT THE CORNER. YOUNG LOOKING IN THAT DIRECTION. THEY GOT THEIR FEET TANGLED UP, BUT THERE IS NO PENALTY MARKER. >> THAT'S ONLY THE SECOND TIME THAT HE'S PASSED TO JERRY RICE, BUT THAT'S NOT BAD, BECAUSE NEWSOME GOT HURT. THEN THEY HAD TO TAKE THEIR FREE SAFETY, SHARPER, AND PUT HIM OVER THERE, AND THEN YOU GET A MATCHUP WITH JERRY RICE, ALTHOUGH HE HAS DOUBLE COVERAGE. HE'S GONNA GET HELP THERE FROM THE SAFETY BECAUSE THE PACKERS WERE IN NICKEL DEFENSE. >> TERRELL CAME IN TO REPLACE. HERE COMES NEWSOME BACK. SO THAT LAST ADJUSTMENT WE JUST TALKED ABOUT IS GONE NOW. NEWSOME'S BACK, AND SHARPER MOVES BACK TO SAFETY. >> RIGHT. AND DARREN SHARPER -- WHEN NEWSOME WAS OUT, DARREN SHARPER PLAYED THAT CORNER POSITION. NOW YOU'RE SEEING THAT THEY'RE BOTH IN THERE BECAUSE THEY GOT THEIR NICKEL DEFENSE AGAIN. >> THREE-MAN FRONT. SECOND AND 15. YOUNG HAS TIME. WHEELS IT OUTSIDE. INCOMPLETE. TERRELL OWENS WAS THE INTENDED TARGET. >> I DON'T KNOW THAT I'VE EVER SEEN TERRELL OWENS PLAY AS POORLY AS HE IS TODAY, I MEAN, YOU KNOW, WITH THE DROPPED PASSES. AND, OKAY, WE'LL GIVE HIM THE SUN IN HIS EYE THAT ONE TIME, BUT IF YOU LOOK HERE, HE'S DROPPED THREE BALLS, AND THEN THAT FUMBLE. REMEMBER THE ONE THAT HE HAD THE TURNOVER. AND THAT'S JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS -- AND I KNOW IT'S NOT FROM NOT TRYING. I MEAN, KNOWING TERRELL OWENS, I WOULD SAY IT'S JUST FROM TRYING TOO HARD. YOU KNOW, IT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT YOU TRY TOO HARD AND THEN YOU TENSE UP A LITTLE. AND I THINK THAT'S WHAT HE'S DOING TODAY, BECAUSE HE IS STEVE YOUNG'S GO-TO GUY AS A WIDE RECEIVER. >> THIRD AND 15. AGAIN, A THREE-MAN FRONT. PACKERS BLITZ. YOUNG GETS IT OUTSIDE. INCOMPLETE. FLAG ON THE PLAY. J.J. STOKES THE INTENDED TARGET. BUT A PENALTY MARKER DOWN. I COULD HEAR THEM YELLING "HOLDING, HOLDING" FROM THE 49ers' SIDELINE. >> AND YOU SEE THE OFFICIAL IS GIVING THE SIGNAL OF HOLDING, TOO. BUT IT'S NOT OFFICIAL UNTIL THIS GUY SAYS IT. >> WE HAVE PASS INTERFERENCE. NUMBER 37 GRABBED THE RECEIVER'S ARM WHILE THE BALL WAS IN THE AIR. >> TYRONE WILLIAMS. >> TYRONE WILLIAMS. YOU SEE HIM OUT HERE ON J.J. STOKES. NOW, AFTER 5 YARDS, YOU CAN'T TOUCH HIM. HE GETS HIS HAND UP THERE, AND HIS RIGHT HAND WAS ON J.J. STOKES' NUMBER 3. >> AND THAT'LL MAKE IT A FIRST DOWN, SAN FRANCISCO, AT THE GREEN BAY 42. >> AND THEN YOU ALWAYS SEE THEM DO THAT. WHEN THEY PUT BOTH HANDS OUT LIKE THAT WITH PALMS OUT? >> YEP. >> THAT'S AN ADMISSION OF GUILT. >> I THOUGHT IT MEANT "I DIDN'T DO IT." >> THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE SAYING, BUT THAT'S AN ADMISSION OF GUILT. >> HEARST GETS A COUPLE. >> BECAUSE IF YOU DIDN'T DO IT, THERE WOULD BE NO QUESTION THAT YOU DID IT. SO WHEN YOU GO TO "I DIDN'T DO IT," THEN YOU'RE BRINGING UP THERE'S A QUESTION THAT YOU DID DO IT. AND THEN WHEN YOU LOOK IN THE REPLAY, YOU PROVE THAT YOU DID DO IT. YOU KNOW WHAT GUY WE HAVEN'T HEARD FROM MUCH TODAY AND, IF THE PACKERS LOSE, COULD BE PLAYING HIS LAST GAME IN A GREAT CAREER? REGGIE WHITE. >> THAT'S TRUE. >> KIRK SCRAFFORD, THE RIGHT TACKLE OF THE 49ers, HAS DONE A GOOD JOB, BECAUSE REGGIE WHITE DOMINATED THE 49ers IN THEIR LAST GAME. >> WELL, PART OF THAT HAS BEEN THEIR ABILITY TO RUN. >> YEAH, AND GET REGGIE WHITE OUT OF THAT PASS-RUSH MODE. BUT THE THING IS -- AND DERRICK DEESE WAS THE RIGHT TACKLE LAST TIME THEY PLAYED. BUT KIRK SCRAFFORD IS A GUY WHO IS AN AMAZING GUY. I MEAN, HE HAD NECK SURGERY AND RETIRED FROM FOOTBALL. AND THEN THE 49ers NEEDED A TACKLE, AND HE CAME BACK OFF NECK SURGERY. AND, YOU KNOW, YOU JUST WATCH HIM PRACTICE AND STUFF, AND JUST THE WAY HE WALKS -- HE'S JUST AN OLD TACKLE. >> YEAH. NO EXPRESSION. >> JUST AN OLD OFFENSIVE LINEMAN. >> HE DOESN'T HAVE TO WEAR A NUMBER. >> NO. HE'S OUT OF MONTANA. OUT OF MONTANA. >> REGGIE WHITE GOES IN THE MIDDLE THAT TIME. THE PASS IS CAUGHT, COMING ACROSS, BY J.J. STOKES. TRYING TO STRETCH FOR THE FIRST DOWN. STOPPED BY SHARPER. >> THAT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT. WATCH WHAT THEY DO WITH REGGIE WHITE, PAT. THEY'RE GONNA SHIFT HIM HERE AND THEN THEY'RE GONNA PUT HIM OVER THE CENTER. NOW, WATCH WHAT HE DOES TO CHRIS DALMAN HERE. HE JUST STARTS IN. THEN HE DECIDES TO RUSH. HE JUST TAKES THAT LEFT ARM AND THROWS CHRIS DALMAN RIGHT ON HIS BACK. >> IT LOOKED LIKE REGGIE WAS GONNA STUNT TO HIS LEFT, AND THEN HE CAME STRAIGHT AHEAD. >> YEAH, YOU KNOW, IT WAS SO LATE, BY THE TIME HE SHIFTED, HE GOT THERE SO LATE THAT HE WASN'T SURE EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS GONNA DO, SO HE JUST BULL-RUSHED. >> 49ers NEED ABOUT A FOOT FOR THE FIRST DOWN, AND THEY'RE GONNA GO FOR IT. >> MAN, THIS IS A BIG PLAY, TOO, HERE. I THINK THAT IT'S NOT A BAD PLAY FOR THE 49ers BECAUSE THEY DON'T FEEL REAL CONFIDENT IN THEIR KICKER. >> NO, THEY DON'T. >> AND THIS ISN'T A BAD TIME TO DO IT, AND YOU HAVE A TWO-WAY GO HERE. ONE, STEVE YOUNG IS VERY GOOD AT RUNNING A QUARTERBACK SNEAK AND PICKING UP A FIRST DOWN. AND THE OTHER THING IS, OF COURSE, GARRISON HEARST. >> OF COURSE, YOU'VE GOT BIG GILBERT BROWN IN THE MIDDLE TO CONTEND WITH. THEY GIVE THE BALL TO EDWARDS. AND HE'S GONNA GET IT. >> OOH, THAT WAS REALLY CHANGING IT UP, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE THEY WERE PROBABLY THINKING GREEN BAY WAS THINKING THE SAME THING THAT I WAS THINKING. YOU GOT STEVE YOUNG, AND HE CAN RUN THE QUARTERBACK SNEAK, OR YOU GIVE IT TO GARRISON HEARST. SO, THEY DID NEITHER. THEY JUST HANDED IT TO MARC EDWARDS. MARC EDWARDS IS THE FIRST GUY. AGAIN, KEVIN GOGAN GETS A GOOD BLOCK HERE. HE LET HIS GUY GET PENETRATION, WHICH IS NORMALLY BAD, BUT IF THE GUY GETS PENETRATION AND YOU CAN TURN THAT PENETRATION, YOU CAN STILL MAKE A LITTLE HOLE. >> 49ers GO IN A HURRY. THE HAND-OFF IS TO HEARST. AND A FLAG ON THE PLAY, AS HEARST DOESN'T MAKE IT BACK TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. VONNIE HOLLIDAY... >> IT'S GONNA BE AGAINST THE 49ers. THEY BLEW THE WHISTLE BEFORE THE BALL WAS SNAPPED. >> PRIOR TO THE SNAP, FALSE START -- NUMBER 66. 5 YARDS. IT'S STILL FIRST DOWN. >> KEVIN GOGAN. >> I WAS BRAGGING ABOUT KEVIN GOGAN, ABOUT MAKING A BLOCK, AND THEN HE JUMPS. AND HE PRIDES HIMSELF ON NOT DOING THOSE KINDS OF THINGS. YOU KNOW, WE TALKED, IN THE PREGAME, HOW CHARLES HALEY GOT HERE. AND STEVE MARIUCCI CALLED IN 12 OF HIS VETERANS AND HE SAID, "OKAY, WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO BRING CHARLES HALEY IN. SHOULD WE DO IT?" NO ONE SAID ANYTHING. AND THEN GOGAN RAISED HIS HAND. "YEAH, DO IT. I PLAYED WITH HIM IN DENVER. HE'S A GREAT PASS RUSHER." >> KIRBY IS SPLIT WIDE TO THE LEFT THIS TIME. AND YOUNG COMES OUT OF THE POCKET. STILL OUT OF THE POCKET. CHASED BY BOOKER. AND DOWN GOES STEVE YOUNG. HE THROWS IT ON THE GROUND. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S GONNA BE INTENTIONAL GROUNDING OR NOT. PROBABLY NOT BECAUSE HE WAS OUT OF THE POCKET. >> YEAH, YEAH. HE'S OUTSIDE THAT TIGHT-END AREA. IF THE QUARTERBACK IS OUTSIDE THAT TIGHT-END AREA, HE CAN THROW THE BALL AWAY, AS LONG AS HE THROWS IT AND GETS IT UP TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. NOW, HERE WOULD BE THE TIGHT-END AREA OUT HERE. NOW, IF HE THROWS IT AWAY IN HERE, IT WOULD BE A PENALTY. BUT, SEE, NOW ONCE HE GETS OUT HERE, NOW HE CAN THROW IT AWAY, IF HE GETS IT UP TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. IN FACT, THEY CALLED THAT ONE A SACK. I THINK WHAT HAPPENED IS -- BEFORE HE DID THAT, BEFORE HE THREW IT AWAY -- THAT WAS AN UGLY THROWAWAY, ANYWAY -- THEY HAD SACKED HIM. >> THAT WAS THE OLD HOOK SHOT. >> BUT THAT WAS GOOD COVERAGE, BECAUSE STEVE YOUNG, ON THAT PLAY, BEFORE HE DID THAT, HE HAD A HECK OF A LOT OF TIME. >> YES, HE DID. MUCH OF WHICH HE BOUGHT HIMSELF. HERE'S HEARST. BREAKS ONE TACKLE. BREAKS ANOTHER. AND STILL ON HIS FEET TO THE 31. >> NOW, HE HAS TO BE STRONG, PAT, WHEN THE FIRST TACKLE THAT HE BROKE IS GILBERT BROWN. THAT'S THE THING -- WE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT IF YOU'RE GOING TO RUN INSIDE, YOU GOT TO GET THIS GUY. WATCH HIM. HE JUST STARTS INSIDE. HE'S REALLY NOT EVEN BLOCKED, AND GARRISON HEARST JUST RUNS RIGHT THROUGH GILBERT BROWN'S TACKLE. NOW, HE IS A POWERFUL GUY. AND YOU SEE WHY HE'S SO POWERFUL? IT'S NOT ONLY HIS LEGS, BUT HE ALWAYS HAS THAT LOW CENTER OF GRAVITY, THAT BALANCE. >> THIRD AND 10. LONE SET BACK IS HEARST. THE BLITZ IS PICKED UP FOR THE MOMENT AT LEAST. YOUNG GETS IT TO GARRISON HEARST, AND HE'S KNOCKED BACKWARDS. THEY MAYBE HAVE LOST A YARD ON THAT EFFORT. >> AND, AGAIN, THAT WAS GOOD COVERAGE BY THE PACKER DEFENSE. THEY USE THEIR THREE-MAN LINE, WHAT FRITZ SHURMUR CALLS THEIR "THREE-MAN DIME." AND THEY JUST BROUGHT ONE LINEBACKER ON THE BLITZ, BERNARDO HARRIS. AND STEVE YOUNG LOOKED LIKE HE THOUGHT HE HAD MORE PRESSURE THAN HE REALLY DID. >> THIS IS GONNA BE ABOUT 48 YARDS FOR RICHEY. HE MADE HIS FIRST ONE FROM 34. THIS ONE A LITTLE TOUGHER. PLENTY FAR ENOUGH. AND GOOD. HOVERING HIGH ABOVE AND LOOKING VERY MUCH LIKE THE WORLD'S LARGEST BOX OF COLOR FILM, THE FUJI FILM BLIMP, PILOTED BY CAPTAINS JOHN AND MARTHA KING, THE WORLD'S ONLY HUSBAND-AND-WIFE BLIMP PILOT TEAM. I DOUBT THERE ARE TOO MANY OF THOSE. >> SO WE'RE MAKING HISTORY HERE TODAY. >> YES, WE ARE. WORLD'S ONLY. IT'S ALWAYS NICE TO BE THE WORLD'S ONLY, WHATEVER IT IS. ROELL PRESTON FROM THE GOAL LINE. PRESTON OUT OF BOUNDS AT THE 22. [ INDISTINCT SHOUTING ] >> THE PLAY IS OVER. GO TO YOUR HUDDLES. GO TO YOUR HOUSES. THAT'S WHAT -- I MEAN, THAT'S A DUMB THING THAT THEY DO ALL THAT STUFF. I MEAN, IT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING, YOU'RE NOT GONNA GET ANYTHING OUT OF IT, AND IF IT GOES TOO FAR, YOU'RE JUST GONNA GET A PENALTY. >> WELL, YOU'RE NOT GONNA HIT ANYBODY, NOT GONNA HURT ANYBODY. >> I USED TO ALWAYS TELL MY PLAYERS, "ONCE THE WHISTLE BLOWS, EITHER JUST GO BACK TO YOUR HUDDLE, OR IF IT'S A CHANGE OF POSSESSION, JUST COME OFF THE FIELD. THERE'S NOTHING ELSE TO DO. THE WHISTLE'S BLOWN. THERE'S NO MORE PLAYING TO DO UNTIL THE NEXT SNAP. FIRST DOWN, GREEN BAY. FAVRE DROPS. CHMURA. ENOUGH FOR A FIRST. >> YEAH, THAT'S MARK CHMURA'S FIRST CATCH. HERE HE IS AT TIGHT END. HE'S COMING OFF A CALF INJURY, AND YOU CAN SEE THAT HE'S KIND OF LUMBERING AS HE GOES OUT HERE, BUT HE RUNS A PRETTY GOOD OUT PATTERN. AND IT'S A GOOD MATCHUP, BECAUSE WHEN HE TAKES AN INSIDE RELEASE, THE GUY THAT HAS TO PICK HIM UP IS THE MIDDLE LINEBACKER, AND THAT WAS ANTHONY PETERSON, AND ALL HE COULD DO WAS CHASE "CHEWIE." >> FAVRE FAKES. DROPS IN THE MIDDLE TO HENDERSON. HENDERSON RAMBLING AND RUMBLING ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE SAN FRANCISCO 33. >> RAMBLING AND RUMBLING AND JUMPING. >> [ Laughing ] YEAH. >> I THINK IT WAS KEN NORTON JR. WAS DOWN THERE, AND HE JUMPS RIGHT THROUGH A TACKLE. WATCH THIS. YOU SEE? HE'S THE FIRST GUY THROUGH WHEN THEY FAKE. NOW WATCH HIM. HE STARTS TO RUN HERE. AND THERE'S THE JUMP -- OH, IT WAS OVER TIM McDONALD HE JUMPED OVER. >> YEP. WOODALL FINALLY WRESTLED HIM DOWN. >> WILLIAM HENDERSON, THE BIG BLOCKING FULLBACK -- YOU DON'T EXPECT TO RUMBLE AND RAMBLE AND YOU SURE AS HECK DON'T EXPECT HIM TO -- >> PRETTY GOOD FORM. >> YEAH. THAT WAS A HECK OF A DEAL THERE. >> THREE WIDE RECEIVERS. HENDERSON AND LEVENS BEHIND FAVRE. DORSEY LEVENS. TO THE GREEN BAY 25 -- TO THE SAN FRANCISCO 25. TIM McDONALD UP TO STOP HIM. >> THEY SAY THAT THEY'RE CHECKING CRAIG NEWSOME FOR A CONCUSSION. >> HE DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT THE CHECKING. >> NO. >> SECOND AND 2. >> THE BIG TEST WILL BE WHEN THE PACKERS GO BACK ON DEFENSE, OF COURSE. >> FINAL SECONDS OF THE THIRD QUARTER TICKING OFF. AND LEVENS GETS IT TO THE 49er 20. THAT'S PROBABLY THE LAST PLAY THEY'LL RUN IN THE THIRD QUARTER. >> AGAIN, THE BIG THING, IN THIS GAME, THE BIG SURPRISE IS HOW MUCH THEY'VE USED THEIR RUNNING BACK AND TIGHT ENDS ONCE IN A WHILE AND HOW LITTLE THEY'VE USED THEIR WIDE RECEIVERS. >> JOHN, WE TALKED, IN THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME, ABOUT THE FINALITY OF THIS. NOW ONE MORE QUARTER, UNLESS WE GO INTO OVERTIME, AND ONE OF THESE TWO WILL BE GONE. >> YEAH, THIS IS A GREAT GAME. I MEAN, THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. YOU KNOW, AND YOU'RE GETTING DOWN HERE, AND THE PACKERS ARE GOING. AND BOTH TEAMS HAVE HAD A PLAN AND THEY'VE STUCK WITH THEIR PLAN. >> DORSEY LEVENS. GETS DOWN TO ABOUT THE 16. STOPPED BY BRENTSON BUCKNER. >> I REMEMBER TIM McDONALD SAYING, THE OTHER DAY -- HE SAID, "WE'RE GONNA MAKE THE PACKERS BEAT US. IF THEY BEAT US, THEY'RE GONNA HAVE TO BEAT US LEFT-HANDED," MEANING THAT "THEY'RE NOT GOING TO BEAT US THE WAY THEY NORMALLY HAVE, AND THAT'S WITH ANTONIO FREEMAN. AND THAT'S BEEN THEIR PLAN. NOW, THE PACKERS ARE TRYING TO MOVE FREEMAN AROUND, BUT THEY'VE HAD A PLAN, THE 49ers DEFENSE, AND THEY'VE STUCK WITH THEIR PLAN. >> THEY CONSIDER THE PACKERS TO BE VERY MUCH A RIGHT-HANDED TEAM. FAVRE CHASED BY A BLITZING McDONALD. GETS RID OF IT AND THROWS IT TO NOBODY. >> YOU KNOW, AND THAT'S THE THING THAT YOU HAVE TO DO. YOU KNOW, YOU CAN'T SAY THAT YOU'RE GOING TO DOUBLE ALL THE TIME. ONCE IN A WHILE, YOU HAVE TO BRING TIM McDONALD UP THERE AND YOU HAVE TO BLITZ HIM. YOU SEE, HERE'S McDONALD. HE COMES INSIDE, AND NO ONE GETS HIM. AND NOW, BECAUSE OF THAT, CHARLES HALEY NOW HAS CONTAIN, BECAUSE McDONALD, WHO WAS THE OUTSIDE GUY, WOULD NORMALLY HAVE CONTAIN. HE BLITZES INSIDE THE END, SO NOW HE HAS THE RUSH, AND THEN THE END HAS THE CONTAIN. THEY JUST SWITCH POSITIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES. >> THIRD AND LONG. THAT WAS THE FOURTH BLITZ OF THE DAY BY McDONALD. FAKE TO LEVENS. THE THROW IS COMPLETE TO BROOKS AT THE 10. DID HE GET THE FIRST? VERY CLOSE. YES, HE DID. >> YEAH, BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE HE'S BEYOND THE LINE, AND THE FIRST-DOWN MARKER IS RIGHT AT THE LINE. BROOKS IS THE OUTSIDE RECEIVER. HE'S DOING A LITTLE DELAY AND GETS INSIDE. AND ONCE HE GETS INSIDE, YOU CAN SEE DARNELL WALKER THERE WAS A LITTLE TENTATIVE AND HE JUST KIND OF WAITED AND LET BROOKS GET INSIDE HIM AND CATCH THAT BALL FOR A FIRST DOWN. >> FIRST AND GOAL RIGHT AT THE 10. AND HERE'S LEVENS, WHO'S ALREADY OVER 100 YARDS. CUTS BACK AFTER PICKING UP 5 MORE, BUT THERE'S A PENALTY MARKER DOWN. >> WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE FINALITY, YOU KNOW, AND CAUSES URGENCY, AND YOU CAN JUST FEEL IT NOW, CAN'T YOU? I MEAN, YOU CAN JUST FEEL THE FINALITY. ONE TEAM'S GONNA BE OUT. >> HOLDING -- NUMBER 62 OF THE OFFENSE. 10 YARDS. REPEAT FIRST DOWN. >> MARCO RIVERA CALLED FOR HOLDING. THEY'LL PENALIZE THEM 10. >> AND THOSE ARE THE KIND THAT KILL YOU. HERE'S RIVERA HERE, NUMBER 62. AND YOU SEE THAT, YOU KNOW, HE JUST HOLDS JUNIOR BRYANT. I MEAN, HE JUST OUT THERE AND PUTS HIS LEFT ARM OUT THERE, AND THEN IT ENDS UP IN A TACKLE. BUT THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT KILL YOU. I MEAN, THE PACKERS HAD THE MOMENTUM AND THEY'RE DRIVING, THEY'RE DRIVING, THEY'RE DRIVING, AND THEN, YOU KNOW, YOU WONDER HOW YOU GET THESE LONG-YARDAGE SITUATIONS. YOU GET THEM WITH SACKS, BUT YOU ALSO GET THEM WITH PENALTIES. >> FIRST AND GOAL AT THE 20. HAND-OFF, LEVENS. NOTHING DOING. RIGHT AT THE 20. JUNIOR BRYANT WAS THE FIRST MAN IN RED TO GET THERE. >> YOU KNOW, AND YOU WOULD THINK, RIGHT HERE, WITH BRETT FAVRE AND HIS PERSONALITY AND HIS AGGRESSIVENESS AND MIKE HOLMGREN'S AGGRESSIVENESS IN CALLING PLAYS, THAT THEY WOULD BE GOING FOR THE 7, GOING FOR THE TOUCHDOWN, YOU KNOW, THROWING THE BALL IN THE END ZONE, BUT YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A PLAYOFF GAME, AND THEY CAN'T AFFORD A MISTAKE DOWN HERE. THEY DON'T WANT TO FORCE ANYTHING, BECAUSE THEY'RE DOWN BY THREE. SO THE WORST THEY WANT TO COME OUT OF THIS DRIVE WITH IS A TIE SCORE. >> A TIE IS CORRECT. THAT'S BROOKS IN MOTION. AND HERE'S FAVRE DROPPING. THE THROW. INCOMPLETE. NO, THEY'RE SAYING HE CAUGHT IT. OR ARE THEY? ROELL PRESTON MADE THE GRAB, IF HE DID. NO, HE DIDN'T. THEY'RE BRINGING IT BACK NOW. >> NOW, THEY ALL CAME UP THERE AND SAID "NO." AND, AGAIN, BRETT FAVRE IS -- THIS IS ONE THING THAT YOU DO IS -- HE STEPS UP HERE. YOU THROW THAT BALL WHERE EITHER YOUR GUY GETS IT OR NO ONE IS GONNA GET IT. YOU SEE CHARLES HALEY. HE'S WORKING ON ROSS VERBA HERE. YOU SEE THE PRESSURE. CHARLES HALEY WILL ALWAYS COME INSIDE, AND THAT'S WHY HE'S A GREAT PASS RUSHER. AVERAGE PASS RUSHERS ARE ALWAYS OUTSIDE, TAKE THE BELTWAY. CHARLES HALEY WILL TAKE THE TOUGH WAY, THE INSIDE. >> THIRD AND 20. THEY GIVE TO LEVENS. AND HE GOES STRAIGHT AHEAD AND STOPPED RIGHT THERE. HE MIGHT HAVE GOTTEN 2 YARDS, BUT THEY'RE SAYING, "WE WANT TO TIE IT, AT THE WORST." >> YEAH, THAT'S THE THING. I MEAN, I KNOW THAT MIKE HOLMGREN IS THINKING, "WE DON'T WANT TO FORCE ANYTHING HERE, BECAUSE WE ARE GONNA GET A PASS RUSH. THEY'RE NOT GONNA LET BRETT KEEP HIS RHYTHM. SO LET'S JUST RUN THE BALL, KICK A FIELD GOAL, TIE THE SCORE, AND THEN PLAY FROM THAT POSITION. THIS IS A GREAT GAME. >> OH, IS IT. LONGWELL TO TRY, WITH PEDERSEN HOLDING. RYAN LONGWELL. AND, AGAIN, THIS CONTEST IS TIED. NOW, YOU SAID YOU'VE RIDDEN AND JUMPED THE CABLE CAR. HAVE YOU EVER DONE THIS? >> NO. I'VE EATEN -- I'VE BEEN AT THE OTHER END. YOU SEE WHERE HE THROWS THEM WITH HIS RIGHT HAND? I'VE BEEN ON THAT END OF A HECK OF A LOT OF CRABS DOWN IN FISHERMAN WHARF. >> THAT GUY LOOKS LIKE HE'D BE A GOOD HALFTIME SHOW. >> WELL, YOU THINK IT'S EASY CRACKING CRABS? [ CHUCKLES ] BOY, THAT'S A SPECIAL TALENT. >> McQUARTERS BACK DEEP FOR SAN FRANCISCO. LONGWELL WILL KICK OFF. HE'S BEEN SHORT MOST OF THE TIME TODAY WITH THE KICKOFFS -- DOWN ABOUT THE 5 OR 6. [ WHISTLE BLOWS ] THAT ONE'S GONNA BE ABOUT THE SAME. AT THE 2, McQUARTERS. TO THE 27. >> AND, YOU KNOW, THEIR DEFENSE HAS REALLY PLAYED WELL THIS YEAR. THAT'S A BIG PART OF IT, TOO. AND WHO WOULD HAVE EXPECTED WHAT RANDALL CUNNINGHAM DID? >> HEARST. ACROSS THE 30 TO THE 32. PICKED UP ABOUT 5. >> YOU KNOW, THIS IS KIND OF A CONSERVATIVE GAME FOR BOTH OF THESE TEAMS. I MEAN, YOU THINK -- LIKE I SAID EARLIER, YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE STEVE YOUNG AND YOU HAVE BRETT FAVRE. IT'S GONNA BE A WIDE-OPEN SHOOTOUT, BUT I WAS JUST LOOKING. THESE TWO TEAMS COMBINED TODAY HAVE RUSHED FOR 273 YARDS AND PASSED FOR 256. NOW, WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT? >> HEARST AGAIN. NOT MUCH THIS TIME. PACKERS PLAYED IT WELL. GEORGE KOONCE, NUMBER 53, FORCED HIM TO THE OUTSIDE, AND HE LOST A YARD. >> I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS THAT STEVE MARIUCCI WAS WORRIED ABOUT BEFORE THIS GAME WAS, "A," IF GARRISON HEARST WAS GONNA BE ABLE TO PLAY, BUT THEN IF HE WERE ABLE TO PLAY, IS HE GONNA BE ABLE TO PLAY FOR THE DURATION? AND HE HAS SHOWN THAT HE'S BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT. >> 49ers PUT J.J. STOKES IN THE GAME NOW AS THE THIRD WIDE RECEIVER. THREE WIDEOUTS -- OWENS, RICE, AND STOKES. THIRD AND 7. >> AND JERRY RICE HAS YET TO CATCH A PASS TODAY. >> YOUNG. PASS CAUGHT. IT'S GONNA BE SHORT OF A FIRST DOWN. IT'S STOKES. WHITE HAD MOVED INTO THE MIDDLE AS A NOSE TACKLE ON THE PASS RUSH. >> YEAH, AND THAT'S STOKES' FAULT RIGHT THERE. HE HAS TO GET BEYOND. HE HAS TO KNOW WHERE IT IS. AND I DON'T KNOW THAT HE DIDN'T GET BEYOND THE FIRST-DOWN MARKER. HE SURE DID. >> YEP. >> REGGIE WHITE GOES INSIDE, HE GETS A PUSH, BUT STEVE YOUNG HAS PLENTY OF TIME. NOW WATCH J.J. STOKES HERE. SEE, HE JUST GETS UP JUST ENOUGH FOR THAT FIRST DOWN. HE HAD TO COME BACK A LITTLE TO CATCH THE BALL. SO THAT REALLY WASN'T HIS FAULT. AND HE'S LOOKING RIGHT DOWN THAT LINE AND HE SAW THAT HE HAD A FIRST DOWN. BUT STEVE YOUNG BROUGHT HIM BACK A LITTLE WITH THE PASS. >> HEARST RUNS STRAIGHT AHEAD AND IS KNOCKED BACKWARDS BY BERNARDO HARRIS. >> THAT'S THE WAY A MIDDLE LINEBACKER'S SUPPOSED TO PLAY. DID YOU SEE BERNARDO HARRIS? >> YEAH. >> HE KNOCKED GARRISON HEARST RIGHT BACK WHERE HE CAME FROM. THAT'S THE OLD DEAL THAT YOU ALWAYS TELL YOUR LINEBACKERS. IT WAS, "WHEN YOU GET IN THERE, JUST HIT HIM AND JUST DRIVE YOUR LEGS AND KNOCK HIM BACK WHERE HE CAME FROM." WATCH NUMBER 55 HERE, BERNARDO HARRIS. HE TAKES ON RAY BROWN, PLAYS OFF HIM, AND MAKES A PICTURE-PERFECT TACKLE. >> SECOND AND 8. YOUNG FAKES. STARTED TO LOOK DEEP. NOW HE'S GONNA TAKE OFF. AND STEVE YOUNG GETS TO MIDFIELD. MOVE THOSE STICKS AGAIN. >> AND THIS IS WHY THE 49ers' OFFENSE IS SO DANGEROUS AND WHY STEVE YOUNG IS SO DANGEROUS. NOW GARRISON HEARST IS THEIR BEST RUNNING BACK, BUT I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT STEVE YOUNG, BEFORE GARRISON HEARST THERE FOR A WHILE, WAS NOT ONLY THEIR BEST QUARTERBACK BUT ALSO THEIR BEST RUNNER. ALWAYS MAKES BIG PLAYS LIKE THAT. >> ONE OF THE FASTEST, AS WELL. >> YEAH, I MEAN, THAT'S THE THING THAT HE CAN DO. I MEAN, YOU KNOW, HE HAS THOSE QUARTERBACK INSTINCTS, BUT THEN HE HAS THE SPEED OF A WIDE RECEIVER. >> RIGHT AT MIDFIELD. FIRST AND 10. 20-20 TIE. 8:40 LEFT TO PLAY. AND DROPS. GOING DEEP. THE PASS IS CAUGHT BY OWENS. STEPPED OUT OF BOUNDS. HE CAME DOWN WITH THE PASS. HE'D HAD A ROUGH DAY TILL THEN. >> YEAH, BUT STEVE YOUNG STAYED WITH HIM. STEVE YOUNG DIDN'T GET FRUSTRATED. STEVE YOUNG DIDN'T SAY, "WELL, I'M NOT GONNA GO TO HIM. I'M GONNA KEEP WORKING OUT THERE." THERE'S TYRONE WILLIAMS YOU SEE. AND TERRELL OWENS GETS A STEP ON HIM. STEVE YOUNG MAKES A PERFECT PASS. RIGHT THERE, HE STEPPED OUT OF BOUNDS WITH HIS LEFT FOOT. WATCH THE CONCENTRATION THERE. NOW, HE JUMPS AND JUST TAKES THAT BALL AWAY FROM TYRONE WILLIAMS. >> THAT'S ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD COVERAGE. >> IT IS GOOD COVERAGE. AND THAT'S WHAT STEVE YOUNG LIKES ABOUT TERRELL OWENS -- YOU CAN JUST THROW THE BALL UP THERE FOR HIM. >> HEARST. LOST A COUPLE. PACKERS PLAYED IT WELL -- TYRONE WILLIAMS. >> LeROY BUTLER CAME FLYING UP THERE ON THAT ONE AND HE MADE GARRISON HEARST MAKE A LITTLE ADJUSTMENT. THAT'S CENTER CHRIS DALMAN. >> DALMAN. >> LOOK AT HIM. HE'S AN OLD OFFENSIVE LINEMAN. >> GOGAN JUST WAVED OVER TO THE SIDE AND SAID, "WE DON'T NEED ANYBODY." >> "DON'T PAY ANY ATTENTION." I REMEMBER, WHEN I WAS COACHING, I USED TO TELL MY LINEMEN, THE OFFENSIVE LINEMEN, "I'M NOT EVEN GONNA LOOK AT YOU." SO IF YOU GO DOWN, JUST GET UP. AND THAT'S WHAT DALMAN DID. I MEAN, YOU KNOW, HE WAVED OFF FIRST. I'LL SAY THAT FOR CHRIS DALMAN. HE WAVED OFF FIRST, AND THEN KEVIN GOGAN WAVED OFF SECOND, SAID, "NAH, HE'S OKAY." >> SECOND AND 12. AND HERE'S A FLAG. >> YEAH, THEY HAD 12 MEN ON THE FIELD. >> ILLEGAL SUBSTITUTION, 12 MEN IN THE HUDDLE. 5 YARDS. IT'S STILL SECOND DOWN. >> STILL SECOND DOWN. 12 MEN IN THE HUDDLE. >> YEAH, THAT'S WHAT THEY DID. YOU SEE IT'S GREG CLARK THERE. HE WAS TRYING TO GET OFF. YOU KNOW, WE TALKED ABOUT PROBLEMS YOU HAVE WITH ALL THESE PERSONNEL PACKAGES. THAT'S ANOTHER ONE OF THEM RIGHT THERE, WHERE, YOU KNOW, A GUY COMES IN, AND THEN THE GUY -- NO ONE TELLS HIM, AND THE GUY DOESN'T GO OUT. >> THAT'S GONNA BRING UP SECOND AND 17. 7:15. CLOCK STILL RUNNING. DOWN TO 7:10 NOW. >> AND YOU WOULD EXPECT THAT THE 49ers WILL GET A LITTLE CONSERVATIVE HERE, TOO, BECAUSE WE KNOW WHAT THE TURNOVER STORY IN THIS GAME HAS BEEN. >> YOUNG HAS TIME. INCOMPLETE. HE THREW QUICKLY. >> AND SOME OF THOSE TIMES, YOU KNOW, YOU'RE OUT OF RHYTHM, AND SOME OF THE THINGS -- I THINK BRETT FAVRE DID IT ON THE LAST DRIVE THAT THE PACKERS HAD. YOU'RE JUST THROWING NOT TO THROW AN INTERCEPTION, AND IF YOUR GUY GETS IT, IT'S GONNA BE A PLUS, 'CAUSE I THINK STEVE YOUNG IS THINKING, RIGHT HERE NOW, "WE GOT OUR GUYS IN FIELD-GOAL RANGE. THE SCORE IS TIED. WE DON'T WANT TO GIVE AWAY OUR FIELD GOAL. NOW, IF WE CAN GET A TOUCHDOWN, THEN THAT WOULD BE THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT." >> THIRD AND 17. OWENS COMES WIDE RIGHT. YOUNG TO THROW. LIKE THEY'RE TRYING TO SET UP A SCREEN. YOUNG LOOKING. CHANGED DIRECTIONS. SLUNG DOWN BY KEITH McKENZIE, WHO STAYED WITH HIM. >> AND YOU WERE RIGHT, PAT. THEY WERE TRYING TO THROW A SCREEN LEFT. AND, IN FACT, GILBERT BROWN WAS OUT THERE AGAIN RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT SCREEN. SO HE COULDN'T THROW THE SCREEN TO HIS LEFT, SO HE CAME BACK TO THE RIGHT. BUT WATCH GILBERT BROWN RIGHT HERE. YOU SEE HE STARTS IN A PASS RUSH. NOW HE SEES IT, AND THEY ALL RUN OUT THERE. SEE? SO THERE'S JUST A BIG, OLD BUNCH OF GUYS THERE, AND STEVE YOUNG DIDN'T HAVE ANYONE TO THROW TO. BUT HE SHOULD HAVE KEPT RUNNING BACK HERE ON THIS RIGHT SIDE. >> DETMER IS THE HOLDER. AT 40 YARDS OUT, RICHEY. AND THE FIELD GOAL IS GOOD. AND, AGAIN, THE 49ers LEAD. WADE RICHEY TO KICK IT OFF. HE'S BEEN GOOD ON ALL OF HIS FIELD-GOAL ATTEMPTS. THE KICK GOES TO ROELL PRESTON. HE STARTS FROM ABOUT THE 4. IS HIT AT THE 20 AND DRIVEN BACKWARDS BY THE 49er COVERAGE. THE BALL COMES LOOSE, BUT AFTER HE WAS DOWN. REGGIE GIVENS WAS THERE FIRST. PAT SUMMERALL, JOHN MADDEN. 23-20. >> I WAS JUST GONNA SAY -- YOU LOOK HERE. HERE'S ZACK BRONSON. HE'S THE EXTRA SAFETY. NOW, THIS IS FIRST DOWN, AND THE 49ers HAVE ELECTED TO PLAY THE PACKERS IN A NICKEL DEFENSE ON FIRST DOWN. SO THEY'RE PLAYING WITH A FOUR DEFENSIVE LINE, TWO LINEBACKERS, FIVE DEFENSIVE BACKS. >> TWO-TIGHT-END SET UP. PICKED OFF. FAVRE'S PASS IS PICKED OFF BY DARNELL WALKER. INTENDED FOR DAVIS. UNDERTHROWN. >> AND THAT WAS THE THING THAT BROUGHT THE NICKEL DEFENSE. JOHN MARSHALL WAS TELLING ME, THE OTHER DAY, THAT HE'S GONNA PLAY TYRONE DAVIS LIKE A WIDE RECEIVER, AND THEY'RE GOING TO PLAY HIM IN NICKEL. YOU KNOW, IF YOU LOOK AT THIS PASS AGAIN, PAT, YOU SEE THAT, YOU KNOW, BRETT FAVRE, A LOT OF TIMES, DOESN'T STEP INTO HIS PASSES, AND HE SURE DIDN'T STEP IN OR HAVE ANYTHING ON THAT. >> GARRISON HEARST. A YARD. THE PACKERS, IN THE FIVE-GAME STREAK WHEN THEY BEAT THE 49ers, TURNED THE BALL OVER SIX TIMES. TODAY, ALREADY FOUR. >> SEE, NOW, HERE'S TYRONE DAVIS. NOW, HERE'S DARNELL WALKER. SO THEY'RE LEAVING HIM ON. NOW LOOK AT TIM McDONALD. HE'S POINTING, "THERE'S TYRONE DAVIS." SO THEY'RE PLAYING HIM LIKE A WIDE RECEIVER. THEY'RE DOUBLING HIM. NOW, McDONALD IS DEEP, SO, THEREFORE, DARNELL WALKER CAN PLAY UNDERNEATH. AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT HE DID, AND THAT'S HOW HE GOT THE INTERCEPTION. AND BRETT FAVRE THREW A LOUSY PASS, TOO. >> A FLUTTERING PASS. SECOND AND 9. 49ers LEAD, 3-0. HEARST THE CARRIER. HIT BY BERNARDO HARRIS. THIRD DOWN. >> YOU SEE WHO FINISHED HIM OFF, TOO? IT WAS LeROY BUTLER. >> YEP. >> I MEAN, HARRIS IS IN THERE TO MAKE A TACKLE, AND BUTLER IS COMING IN THERE TO MAKE A TURNOVER. >> SANTANA DOTSON COMES IN TO PLAY OVER THE CENTER NOW. GILBERT BROWN GOES OUT. THIRD AND 10. >> AND THE PACKERS WOULDN'T START THINKING OF USING TIME-OUTS NOW. THEY ONLY HAVE TWO OF THEIR TIME-OUTS. WITH 4:37, TIME ISN'T AN ISSUE YET. >> 2 OUT OF 9 ON THIRD DOWN. HERE'S A BIG ONE RIGHT HERE, IF THEY CAN COME UP WITH IT. YOUNG THROWS OUTSIDE. AND THE PASS IS DROPPED BY OWENS. IT WAS RIGHT THERE. >> TERRELL OWENS MADE A BIG CATCH ON THAT LAST DRIVE, WHEN THEY GOT A FIELD GOAL, BUT OTHER THAN THAT, HE'S HAD A TERRIBLE DAY TODAY. >> REALLY. >> LOOK AT THAT -- FOUR DROPPED PASSES AND ONE FUMBLE. NOW, THIS IS GOOD PASS PROTECTION. STEVE YOUNG HAS TIME. HE STEPS UP AND HE THROWS A PERFECT PASS. TERRELL OWENS JUST DROPS THE BALL. >> THE 49ers ARE GONNA HAVE TO PUNT. THE GREEN BAY DEFENSIVE UNIT DID THEIR JOB. >> YEAH, OR TERRELL OWENS DIDN'T DO HIS JOB. >> MAYBE. >> BECAUSE, I MEAN, HE WAS OPEN, THE PASS PROTECTION WAS THERE, AND THE THROW WAS THERE. >> ROBY. FAIR CATCH SIGNALED FOR BY MIKE PRIOR JUST OUTSIDE THE 10, SO THE PACKERS WILL START FROM THERE. 4:19 LEFT. TWO TIME-OUTS FOR THE PACKERS. MIKE HOLMGREN CALLING PLAYS. MAYBE, MANY SAY, HIS FINALE AS THE GREEN BAY COACH, IF THEY DON'T PULL IT OUT. >> YEAH, I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE HIS FINALE, AND, IN FACT, HE SAID, YESTERDAY, THAT WHATEVER HIS SITUATION IS, HE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IT CLEARED UP WITHIN ONE WEEK OF THEIR LAST GAME. SO WHATEVER HE'S GONNA DO I THINK HE'S GONNA DO QUICKLY. >> HERE'S FAVRE BACK TO THROW. AND THROWS UNDERNEATH TO TYRONE DAVIS, WHO MOVES THE STICKS, MAYBE. >> TYRONE DAVIS HAS BEEN INJURED A LITTLE, BUT HE CAN BE A REAL THREAT FOR THIS TEAM, BECAUSE HE WAS A GUY THAT WAS A WIDE RECEIVER, AND THEN HE KIND OF GREW INTO A TIGHT END'S BODY. HE'S LIKE 6'4" AND 250 POUNDS, BUT WHEN HE WAS AT VIRGINIA, HE WAS A WIDE RECEIVER. >> IT LOOKS LIKE THAT HAMSTRING IS STILL BOTHERING HIM A LITTLE BIT. >> HE'S STILL KIND OF A COMBINATION GUY, BUT, LIKE YOU SAY, IT LOOKS LIKE HE'S STARTING TO TIGHTEN UP. >> SECOND AND SHORT. FAVRE DROPS. OUTSIDE, HENDERSON. HE DROPPED IT. THAT WAS A TOUGH CATCH, THOUGH. >> YOU KNOW, THEY STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN THE BALL TO ANTONIO FREEMAN THIS SECOND HALF. >> NOT IN THE SECOND HALF. >> THAT'S ONE OF, YOU KNOW, THE THING ABOUT THE 49ers -- THEY'VE REALLY STAYED WITH THEIR PLAN. WILLIAM HENDERSON SHOULD HAVE CAUGHT THAT. I MEAN, THAT WENT RIGHT THROUGH HIS HANDS AND HIT HIM IN HIS HEAD. >> WASN'T AS TOUGH AS I THOUGHT. >> NO. I THINK OF THE PACKER PLAYERS THIS YEAR, WILLIAM HENDERSON HAS BEEN ONE OF THE DISAPPOINTMENTS. >> HE IS IN FRONT OF LEVENS. THEY NEED THIS FIRST DOWN. FAVRE'S NOT GONNA GO FOR IT NOW. INCOMPLETE. INTENDED FOR BROOKS. >> GOOD COVERAGE BY THE 49ers. THEY HAD GOOD DOUBLE COVERAGE OUT HERE, NOTHING ON THIS SIDE. THAT'S WHERE HE WANTED TO GO, AND THEN HE HAD TO GO BACK TO THE OTHER SIDE. >> BRETT FAVRE SIGNALING TO THE SIDELINES THAT, "WE NEED TO GO FOR THE FIRST DOWN." >> WELL, I THINK WHEN YOU HAD THIRD AND SHORT AND YOU THROW THE BALL, IT'S AUTOMATIC THAT YOU'RE GONNA GO FOR IT ON FOURTH DOWN. THAT THIRD-DOWN CALL OF GOING PLAY PASS AND THROWING THE BALL DICTATED THAT YOU HAVE TO GO FOR IT ON FOURTH DOWN. >> THEY BETTER HURRY. THE 25-SECOND CLOCK'S GONNA RUN OUT ON THEM. FREEMAN GOES IN MOTION. AND THE HAND-OFF IS TO LEVENS. AND LEVENS GETS ENOUGH. >> SEE, MIKE HOLMGREN IS TELLING THEM TO HURRY UP. YOU KNOW, DON'T TAKE A TIME-OUT. JUST HURRY UP. GET ON THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, CALL THE PLAY, NO HUDDLE. THAT'S WHAT THE PACKERS ARE DOING. >> FAVRE JUST TELLING THEM ALL, "HERE'S WHAT TO RUN." FIRST AND 10. A CLUTCH FIRST DOWN. BRETT FAVRE GOES DEEP. AND FREEMAN -- I BEG YOUR PARDON -- BRADFORD'S GOT STEPS. AND BRADFORD MAKES THE CATCH. >> THAT'S WHY BRETT FAVRE IS BRETT FAVRE. >> YEP. >> THEY PUT IN COREY BRADFORD. HE'S A ROOKIE AND HE HAS SPEED. AND RON WOLF WAS TELLING ME, BEFORE THE GAME -- HE SAID, "YOU KNOW, IF WE COULD JUST GET COREY BRADFORD AND GET HIM IN THE GAME AND HE KNOWS THE PLAYS, HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S SUPPOSED TO DO, HE CAN MAKE A BIG PLAY FOR US." AND, HERE, THEY COME IN WHEN THEY NEED THEIR BIGGEST PLAY, AND THE GUY THAT GETS IT IS ROOKIE COREY BRADFORD. >> BRADFORD AGAIN. BY MARQUEZ POPE. HE JUST BEAT POPE ON THAT LONG PASS. THIS TIME, HE GETS ABOUT 6. AND THEY'RE MOVING INTO FIELD-GOAL RANGE. >> WELL, I THINK THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MIKE HOLMGREN FIGURED OUT -- YOU KNOW, THAT THEY HAD A PLAN TO TAKE AWAY ANTONIO FREEMAN. SO HE HAS TO DO SOMETHING ELSE. HE TRIED TO MOVE ANTONIO FREEMAN AROUND AND HE TRIED TO GO TO ROBERT BROOKS. HE TRIED TO GO TO TY DAVIS. AND NOW, THE LAST THING HE WENT TO IS PRETTY GOOD, GOING TO COREY BRADFORD. >> AND THE PACKERS USE A TIME-OUT. THEY'RE WORKING ON BROOKS. HE HAD BACK SPASMS, BUT THIS DOESN'T LOOK LIKE BACK SPASMS. >> THEY HAVE CRAMPS NOW. >> FREEMAN NEXT TO HIM. >> YEAH, AND THEY'RE JUST TRYING TO WORK THE CRAMPS OUT OF THEIR LEGS. I MEAN, THEY'VE BEEN RUNNING A HECK OF A LOT TODAY. AND YOU SAY, "WELL, WHY IS FREEMAN -- HE HASN'T CAUGHT ANY PASSES." BUT THE THING THAT HE HAS -- HE'S BEEN RUNNING TO GET OPEN TO CATCH PASSES. I'LL TELL YOU -- MIKE HOLMGREN WAS VERY AGGRESSIVE IN HIS PLAY CALLING. YOU KNOW, THAT THIRD AND SHORT, GOING PLAY PASS, EVEN THOUGH IT DIDN'T WORK, AND THEN COMING BACK, PUTTING IN COREY BRADFORD, GOING TO HIM TWICE, ONE A REAL BIG PLAY. AND I SWEAR -- THE GENERAL MANAGER OF THE PACKERS, RON WOLF, WAS IN HERE BEFORE THE GAME. >> JUST BEFORE THE GAME. >> AND HE WAS TALKING ABOUT COREY BRADFORD. AND YOU THINK, OF ALL THE GUYS, HOW COULD COREY BRADFORD BE A GUY? LO AND BEHOLD, IN THE FOURTH QUARTER, HERE HE IS. >> FIND YOURSELF SAYING, "COREY WHO?" >> FROM JACKSON STATE, COREY WHO? >> SECOND DOWN. FAVRE SPRINTS OUT RIGHT. THROWS FOR TYRONE DAVIS, WHO CAN'T MAKE THE CATCH. >> THIS IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT BRETT FAVRE WAS WORRIED ABOUT YESTERDAY. HE SAID, "YEAH, I'M GETTING SOME OF THESE GUYS BACK, LIKE DAVIS AND BROOKS AND SO ON. BUT, YOU KNOW, THAT'S GOOD THAT WE HAVE THEM, BUT WE DON'T HAVE THE TIMING WITH THEM, SO I'M NOT SURE HOW THOSE THINGS ARE GONNA WORK OUT." >> NOT QUITE SURE WHAT THEY CAN DO. >> THAT'S KIND OF SHOWN UP TODAY, ESPECIALLY WITH TYRONE DAVIS. >> AND BRADFORD HAS JUST REPLACED DAVIS. TALKS TO FAVRE FOR A MOMENT. BRADFORD COMES OUT TO THE LEFT. >> FAVRE WAS PROBABLY TELLING HIM WHAT TO DO. >> LEVENS DEEP. LEVENS CUTS BACK AND HAS A FIRST DOWN FOR GREEN BAY AT THE 15. AND WE'LL GET THE 2-MINUTE WARNING COMING UP VERY SHORTLY. >> AND THAT'S WHAT MIKE HOLMGREN IS SAYING -- "DON'T RUN ANOTHER PLAY. LET IT GO DOWN, AND WE'LL TAKE THE 2-MINUTE." 23-20, SAN FRANCISCO. BUT GREEN BAY IN RANGE. >> 49ers STILL PLAYING THEM IN NICKEL DEFENSE. >> FAVRE ROLLS RIGHT. THROWS DEEP. TOUCHDOWN. THAT'S ANTONIO FREEMAN. "WE CAN'T LET HIM BEAT US." >> AND THAT'S THE FIRST PASS THAT HE'S CAUGHT THIS SECOND HALF. >> AND FAVRE JUST SHOTPUTTED IT DOWN TO HIM. >> WHAT A DRIVE BY THIS GREEN BAY PACKER -- >> WOW. >> LOOK AT THIS. ANTONIO FREEMAN IS THE SLOT, WHERE HE GETS OUT -- I MEAN, HE'S OUTSIDE HERE, WHERE HE STARTS IN ON A SLANT AND THEN HE STOPS. DARNELL WALKER STARTED TO TAKE AWAY THE SLANT. >> TURNED HIM AROUND. >> AND HE JUST DID THAT SLANT AND THEN HE JUST TURNED AND WENT. BOY, THAT'S SOME PATTERN TO GO OFF A SLANT. >> AND THE EXTRA POINT IS GOOD BY LONGWELL. IT'S 27-23. THE 49ers HAVE ALL THREE OF THEIR TIME-OUTS AND 1:56 LEFT. >> AND ANTONIO FREEMAN WAS TALKING YESTERDAY, WHAT HE DOES TO A DEFENSIVE BACK. HE TRIES TO GET HIS HIPS TURNED. THEN WHEN HE GETS HIS HIPS TURNED, THE CORNER, THEN HE GOES THE OPPOSITE WAY. AND THAT'S WHAT HE DID TO DARNELL WALKER. >> YEAH, HE GOT MORE THAN HIS HIPS. >> WELL, HE GOT HIM IN A COMPLETE TURN. >> YEAH. >> HE DID IT LIKE HE WAS GONNA DO A SLANT, MADE DARNELL WALKER JUMP IN ON THAT SLANT, AND THEN HE JUST WENT UP THE FIELD. >> THE PACKERS 27, THE 49ers 23. >> BUT THAT'S WHAT AN ATHLETE DOES. I MEAN, YOU HAVE TO STAY WITH SOMETHING. >> WHAT A GAME THIS HAS BEEN. >> ANTONIO FREEMAN -- LOOK AT THIS. BRETT FAVRE IS GOING TO AN AUDIBLE HERE. YOU SEE HE AUDIBILIZED WITH THAT HAND SIGNAL. AND NOW, HERE, HE STARTS INSIDE. DARNELL WALKER JUMPS THAT SLANT, AND ONCE HE JUMPED IT, ANTONIO FREEMAN JUST WHEELED AND WENT THE OTHER WAY. >> THAT'S THE SAME ACTION THAT THEY RAN TWO PLAYS AGO, WHEN TYRONE DAVIS DROPPED THE BALL, THAT SEMI-ROLL. >> ANTONIO FREEMAN IS SAYING, "WE'RE NUMBER ONE," BUT HE'S HAVING A HECK OF A TIME. JUST BEFORE HE CAUGHT THAT, THEY HAD HIM LAID OUT IN THE FIELD AND THEY WERE STRETCHING HIM OUT BECAUSE HE HAS CRAMPS. >> AND NOW IT'S UP TO THE PACKER DEFENSIVE UNIT, LED BY FRITZ SHURMUR AND REGGIE WHITE AND ALL THE REST. AND THAT'S McQUARTERS. AND HE IS DOWN AT ABOUT THE 24. COMING UP ON OUR POSTGAME REPORT, J.B., TERRY, HOWIE, AND CRIS WILL HAVE AN INTERVIEW WITH ATLANTA HEAD COACH DAN REEVES. THEY ALSO TALK LIVE WITH THE FALCONS' JAMAL ANDERSON AND VIKING HEAD COACH DENNIS GREEN. PLUS, THE FOX SPORTS TICKER WILL HAVE UP-TO-THE-SECOND STATS. THAT'S ALL COMING UP NEXT ON THE POSTGAME REPORT. RIGHT NOW, THE 49ers HAVE THE BALL AT THEIR OWN 24, ALL THREE TIME-OUTS REMAINING, TRAILING BY FOUR. >> AND THEY NEED A TOUCHDOWN HERE. YOU KNOW, LAST TIME, YOU KNOW, THEY WERE THINKING FIELD GOAL. THE PACKERS WERE THINKING FIELD GOAL. NOW THE 49ers HAVE TO THINK TOUCHDOWN. >> THREE-MAN FRONT. YOUNG FIRES. STOKES HAS IT, OPEN. FIRST DOWN. J.J. STOKES GETS OUTSIDE THE 40. >> THAT'S ONE THING THAT ALL THESE 49er RECEIVERS HAVE LEARNED FROM JERRY RICE -- TO RUN AFTER THE CATCH. YOU KNOW, J.J. STOKES DOES IT, TERRELL OWENS DOES IT, AND, OF COURSE, JERRY RICE DOES IT. SO, HE MAKES A GOOD THING HERE. NOW ONCE HE CATCHES THAT BALL, YOU TRY AND MAKE GUYS MISS AND GET FIRST DOWNS AND GET MORE YARDAGE. >> YOUNG DROPS AGAIN. STOKES AGAIN. RIGHT AT MIDFIELD. HURRY, HURRY. NO TIME-OUTS CALLED YET. THEY NEED A TOUCHDOWN. >> AND THE 49ers DO HAVE ALL THEIR TIME-OUTS, SO I DON'T THINK THAT TIME IS GONNA BE A FACTOR HERE. >> THEY DON'T HAVE TO HURRY THAT MUCH. YOUNG...CHASED. THROWS. EDWARDS BROKE AWAY FROM ONE TACKLE. AND ANOTHER. AND GETS ACROSS MIDFIELD. WHAT AN EFFORT BY THE SECOND-YEAR FULLBACK. AND NOW MARIUCCI WANTS A TIME-OUT WITH 52 SECONDS LEFT. >> YOU KNOW, ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT WAS GOOD ABOUT THAT EFFORT BY EDWARDS -- IT GOT THEM A FIRST DOWN. SO NOW THEY CAN TAKE A TIME-OUT, BUT THAT ALSO GETS THEM A NEW SET OF DOWNS. YOU SEE, HERE, HE HAS NOTHING THERE. THEY TAKE AWAY HIS RHYTHM. THEY MAKE HIM GO BACK. NOW, EDWARDS SHOULD HAVE BEEN TACKLED RIGHT THERE BY LeROY BUTLER, BUT HE JUST KEEPS WORKING AND WORKING AND DRIVING. AND THE BIG THING IS -- THIS EFFORT, THIS DRIVE PICKS UP A FIRST DOWN. AND, AGAIN, THAT BRINGS A NEW SET OF DOWNS FOR THE 49ers. THAT'S A BIG PLAY THERE. >> THAT IS A HUGE PLAY. >> OR YOU COULD SAY, FROM THE PACKER THING, THAT WAS A BIG MISSED TACKLE BY LeROY BUTLER. >> BECAUSE OF THOSE FIRST DOWNS YOU TALKED ABOUT, TWO TIME-OUTS REMAINING FOR SAN FRANCISCO, BUT THEY HAVE TO GET IT INTO THE END ZONE. >> AND THEY STILL HAVEN'T THROWN THE BALL TO JERRY RICE, OR JERRY RICE HASN'T CAUGHT A BALL YET. >> YOUNG DROPS. THREE-MAN RUSH. POCKET COLLAPSES MOMENTARILY. AND STEVE YOUNG THROWS IT AWAY. ONE DOWN DOWN. >> AGAIN, WHAT THE PACKERS ARE DOING IS -- THEY'RE MAKING HIM THROW INTO COVERAGE, BECAUSE THEY'RE RUSHING HIM WITH THREE GUYS, JUST A THREE-MAN LINE, AND THEY'RE PLAYING EIGHT OFF. SO IF THEY'RE GOING TO DO IT, THEY'RE GONNA HAVE TO THROW INTO COVERAGE. AND THEY JUST WANT A LITTLE PUSH TO KEEP HIM CONTAINED. THAT'S THE BIG THING -- KEEP STEVE YOUNG CONTAINED AND THEN MAKE HIM THROW INTO THESE EIGHT MEN. SEE, THEY JUST GOT THREE UP HERE ON THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, RUSHING. >> YOU LOOK AROUND THIS STADIUM, AND THERE IS -- NO ONE HAS DEPARTED. >> YOU'D HAVE TO CHECK THEIR BRAIN CELLS IF THEY DID. >> THEY GET THE CROSS. THERE'S JERRY RICE'S CATCH. PACKERS ARE SAYING HE FUMBLED, BUT THE REFEREES DON'T SAY SO. >> JERRY RICE WAS JUST TRYING TO GET OUT OF BOUNDS. THE PACKERS DID A GOOD JOB OF TACKLING HIM BEFORE HE DID. >> AND NOW TIME-OUT, SAN FRANCISCO. THEY'RE DOWN TO ONE. JERRY RICE -- FIRST CATCH OF THE DAY. HAS AT LEAST 1 CATCH IN 22 CONSECUTIVE POSTSEASON GAMES. TIES THE NFL RECORD HELD BY DREW PEARSON. >> YOU KNOW, THERE IS A QUESTION WHETHER HE WAS DOWN BEFORE THAT BALL COMES OUT. >> THAT COULD HAVE BEEN A FUMBLE. >> AGAIN, WAS HIS KNEE DOWN BEFORE THE BALL COMES OUT? >> I DON'T THINK SO. >> AND THEN, WHEN DOES THE WHISTLE BLOW? >> I DON'T THINK HE WAS DOWN. >> NO, NO, NO. HE'S NOT. THE KNEE DOESN'T TOUCH BEFORE THE BALL COMES OUT. THAT WAS A FUMBLE. >> OOH. THAT'S ANOTHER VOTE, IF THERE IS ONE, IN THE OFF-SEASON FOR INSTANT REPLAY. >> WELL, THERE'S GONNA BE ANOTHER VOTE FOR INSTANT REPLAY, AND IT'S GONNA WIN THIS YEAR, I WOULD SAY. BOY, THE 49ers GOT A FEW MORE PLAYS RIGHT THERE. >> 27-23. >> SILVER, SILVER! >> 27 SECONDS LEFT TO PLAY. THIRD AND 4. >> PACKERS IN THE PREVENT DEFENSE. JUST SEE A THREE-MAN RUSH HERE. >> YOUNG, PUMP FAKE TO THE OUTSIDE. IT'S TO KIRBY. ONE OF THE PACKERS SLIPPED DOWN, AND KIRBY HUSTLED IT OUT OF BOUNDS. 20 SECONDS LEFT. ONE TIME-OUT LEFT FOR SAN FRANCISCO. >> BUT, AGAIN, THAT BALL TO KIRBY DID TWO THINGS. ONE, IT GOT THEM ANOTHER FIRST DOWN AND IT GOT OUT OF BOUNDS TO STOP THE CLOCK. NOW, WHEN A FIELD GOAL DOESN'T DO ANY GOOD, YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAVE A TIME-OUT FOR YOUR FIELD GOAL. YOU JUST HAVE TO GET IN A POSITION WHERE YOU CAN GO TO THE END ZONE. SO YOU CAN THINK OF THAT IN ONE-PLAY CHUNK OR IN TWO-PLAYS CHUNK. I LIKE TWO-PLAYS CHUNK. >> LINE OF SCRIMMAGE -- THE 33-YARD LINE. YOUNG STANDS IN THE POCKET. GETS IT TO GARRISON HEARST. AND HEARST GETS TO THE GREEN BAY 25 AND STAYS IN BOUNDS. THEY'LL HAVE TO USE THE LAST ONE. AND THEY DO. >> OKAY, NOW, IF WE'RE TALKING ABOUT TWO-PLAY CHUNK, THAT'S ONE OF THE CHUNKS THERE. GARRISON HEARST IS HURT, BY THE WAY, AND THAT HAMSTRING FINALLY CAUGHT UP WITH HIM. >> MM-HMM. >> AND HE JUST TIGHTENED UP. I MEAN, HE CAN HARDLY WALK TO GET OFF THE FIELD. BUT NOW THEY'RE GONNA HAVE TO THROW THE BALL IN THE END ZONE. >> WHAT A JOB HE DID TODAY. >> I'LL TELL YOU -- HE GUTTED IT OUT. I MEAN, HE GAVE EVERYTHING THAT HE HAD IN HIS TANK. GARRISON HEARST IS A REAL MAN. BUT NOW THE 49ers -- YOU KNOW, THAT SECOND AND 3 ISN'T IMPORTANT. THAT 14 SECONDS IS. THEY'RE GONNA GET A COUPLE OF PLAYS HERE, BUT I THINK, YOU KNOW, THEY EITHER HAVE TO GO TO THE SIDELINE AND GET OUT OF BOUNDS OR GO TO THE END ZONE. IF I HAD THAT CHOICE, I WOULD ALWAYS CHOOSE GO TO THE END ZONE, TAKE TWO SHOTS AT THE END ZONE HERE. >> WELL, YOU GOT THOSE BIG, TALL WIDE RECEIVERS, IN STOKES AND OWENS. AND RICE CAN GET UP. >> THIS IS WHERE THEY HAVE TO EARN THEIR MONEY. >> THREE-MAN RUSH FOR GREEN BAY AGAIN. YOUNG FIRES. AND THE PASS IS ALMOST -- AND IS INTERCEPTED BY NEWSOME. [ WHISTLES BLOWING ] NOW THEY SAY, "NO, IT WAS NOT INTERCEPTED." THE OFFICIAL CLOSEST NEVER MADE A SIGNAL. >> WELL, THAT ONE OFFICIAL WAS POINTING DOWN, THAT THE BALL HIT THE GROUND. >> DID IT? >> THAT'S WHAT HE WAS SAYING. THE OFFICIAL SAID IT DID. YEP, AND IT DID. HE WAS RIGHT. HE WAS RIGHT ON IT AND HE CALLED IT. HE POINTED RIGHT TO THE GROUND, SAYING, "THE BALL HIT THE GROUND." >> 8 SECONDS LEFT. GOT TO GO TO THE END ZONE NOW. >> THEY HAVE TO GO TO THE END ZONE NOW AND HOPE THAT THEY EITHER SCORE A TOUCHDOWN OR THEY GET IT WITHIN 8 SECONDS SO THEY GET ANOTHER PLAY. >> THREE-MAN RUSH. AND YOUNG STUMBLES ON THE WAY BACK AND FIRES UP THE MIDDLE. PASS IS CAUGHT BY OWENS. OWENS MADE THE CATCH. >> OH! [ LAUGHS ] WHOO! THIS IS AMAZING. >> 3 SECONDS LEFT. >> TERRELL OWENS WAS HAVING A ROTTEN DAY, BUT ON ONE PLAY HERE, DOES HE MAKE UP FOR IT. WATCH THIS. IT'S A ZONE. IT'S A PREVENT DEFENSE. THERE'S THREE BACKERS AROUND HIM. THEY RELEASE RIGHT THERE. AND STEVE YOUNG THROWS A PERFECT PASS IN THERE. HOLY MOLY! >> 3 SECONDS LEFT, AS THEY LINE UP FOR THE EXTRA POINT, DETMER AND RICHEY. AND IT'S 30-27, SAN FRANCISCO. >> AND THE 49ers ARE GETTING THE MONKEY OFF THEIR BACK TODAY. >> UNBELIEVABLE. >> HE STUCK WITH IT, THOUGH, DIDN'T HE? >> YES, HE DID. >> HE WAS DROPPING BALLS. HE WAS DOING EVERYTHING. BUT NOT ONLY DID HE STICK WITH IT, BUT STEVE YOUNG STUCK WITH HIM. THE PACKERS WERE IN A PREVENT DEFENSE. THE 49ers ONLY HAD ONE PLAY. THEY CHOSE THE PASS TO GO TO THE END ZONE AND GO TO THIS GUY RIGHT HERE. >> THAT SCORING DRIVE TOOK THEM NINE PLAYS, 76 YARDS, 1:53. THEY LEFT 3 ON THE CLOCK. >> I SAID, JUST BEFORE THAT, "THIS IS WHY THEY PAY THESE GUYS THE BIG MONEY, AND THEY GOT TO EARN THE MONEY." AND TERRELL OWENS IS ONE OF THE GUYS THAT THE 49ers HAVE TO SIGN. >> AND HIS PRICE MIGHT HAVE JUST GONE UP. >> IT SHOULD GO UP. THAT'S THE HIGH OF WINNING AND THE LOW OF LOSING. >> THE LAST GAME FOR REGGIE WHITE. >> REGGIE WHITE, ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREATS. BRETT FAVRE DID HIS PART. HE NEEDED A DRIVE AND A TOUCHDOWN. HIS TEAM GOT IT, AND THEIR DEFENSE COULDN'T HOLD THEM. AGAIN, JUST A THREE-MAN LINE. THEY MADE THEM THROW IT INTO THE ZONE, AND THE ZONE JUST LET TERRELL OWENS RUN RIGHT THROUGH IT. >> STEVE YOUNG WAS 7 OUT OF 9 ON THAT DRIVE. HE TOOK THEM 76 YARDS. >> YOU SAY IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY? >> WHO? >> I SAY BALONEY. IT'S ABOUT EMOTION. >> THAT'S NOT MONEY HE'S CRYING, IS IT? >> NOPE. IT'S ABOUT EMOTION AND IT'S ABOUT LIFE, ABOUT PLAYING HARD, ABOUT WANTING TO WIN, PRIDE. >> THAT'S A GUY WHO HAD A TOUGH DAY...UNTIL THEN. BOUNCING KICKOFF COMES TO ROELL PRESTON. PRESTON AROUND THE CORNER, STILL GOING. FUMBLE. BALL GOES OUT OF BOUNDS, AND IT'S ALL OVER. THE 49ers GOT THE MONKEY OFF THEIR BACK. MARIUCCI GOT THE MONKEY OFF HIS BACK. LET'S GO DOWN TO PAM OLIVER. >> ALL RIGHT, THANKS A LOT, PAT. TERRELL, YOU REALLY MADE UP FOR A PRETTY SCARY DAY FOR YOU. TELL ME ABOUT THAT TOUCHDOWN CATCH. >> IT WAS A ROUGH DAY, AND EVERYBODY STAYED WITH ME. THEY TOLD ME, "JUST CONCENTRATE ON THE BALL," I WAS GONNA MAKE A BIG PLAY. THAT'S ALL I DID. RIGHT NOW, I WANT TO GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD, 'CAUSE I KNOW THAT'S WHO DID THIS TODAY. I HAD TO MAKE THE BIG PLAY. I SAT ON THAT SIDELINE AFTER I MISSED THE THIRD-DOWN PASS AND I KNEW, SOMEHOW, I WAS GONNA HAVE TO MAKE A BIG PLAY. AND I PUT THE PRESSURE ON MYSELF TO DO THAT. STEVE YOUNG GAVE ME A CHANCE, AND THE LORD GAVE IT TO ME TODAY. >> RIGHT THERE TO GREET YOU, STEVE MARIUCCI. YOU TWO EMBRACED. IT SEEMS LIKE YOU SHED SOME TEARS THERE. >> I DID. I'M SO HAPPY. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PILE, THAT'S ALL I WAS SAYING WAS, "THANK YOU, JESUS," BECAUSE I KNOW THAT'S WHO DID IT TODAY. >> WERE YOU WORRIED THAT YOU WERE GONNA HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE DROPPED PASSES AND THE FUMBLE AND ALL OF THAT TODAY? >> I KNEW I WAS GONNA HAVE TO MAKE A BIG PLAY. I STARTED OUT WITH A FUMBLE, WITH A COUPLE DROPPED PASSES. AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY. THE GUYS STAYED BEHIND ME. CHAD FANN, FOR ONE. HE JUST TOLD ME TO JUST CONCENTRATE ON THE BALL AND MAKE A BIG PLAY. >> EVEN BIGGER THAN THAT, YOU FINALLY GET THE MONKEY OFF YOUR BACK WITH THE GREEN BAY PACKERS. LET'S GO BACK UPSTAIRS TO PAT. >> THAT WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST GAMES THAT I'VE EVER SEEN. I DON'T KNOW WHAT MORE YOU COULD ASK FOR IN A FOOTBALL GAME.
God I hate the Packers so much.
My best friend in college missed his friends wedding to attend this game when his mom surprised him with playoff tickets. . His friend was pissed.
25 years later he lost contact with that friend over time. But heβs still a die hard Niner fan.
He made the right choice that day.
Owens fumbles to start the game (a bunch of other stuff happens) then Rice got away with a fumble that would end the game, Young throws an easy pick that miraculously touched the ground incomplete and the next play he throws a laser down the middle and Owens ends up with the winning catch.
Everything in life is a coin flip.
So good to hear John and Pat. What a game. I remember being nervous as hell that last drive.
Only thing that bothered me about winning this game against the pack, was that it wasn't in NFC championship game.
Wasnβt old enough for the first one. Saw the second one live at my house and was at the stick for the catch IIi
We won this but only because the refs botched the Rice fumble.. Young would have been 0-9 against the Packers.
I was 14 rows behind the end zone for the game winning catch. Shit was crazy!
I was there, 10 rows back on the right side of the endzone. I was at the playoff game against the packers that we lost the year before too. When TO made that catch, 15 year old me was hugging and high fiving drunk people all over the place.
