welcome back to the wizard shop and today we're going to talk about half-ton gas-powered full-size trucks what to buy and what not to buy [Music] say a car lizard did you know that trucks have been around since the late 1800s 1800 really yeah they actually were like cars that they kind of modified you kind of had to cut a DIY project here to put your own bet on it Wow that sounds like fun you like the mods yeah and actually the name pickup truck they don't actually know where it came from but studebaker started using it as early as 1913 topic is they used the truck to go pick up stuff who knows the first actual pickup was a Ford in 1925 of course yeah and dodge followed in 29 Chevy and 31 okay but in the 32 Ford upped the ante a little bit and put their new flathead v8 in it so that definitely put a little bit more power underneath the hood yeah now as years go on there's been tons of options available do you want it to be a long bet a sure bet a flatbed a dump bed to subside that even and then what kind of a cab do you want is it a regular cab an extended cab a crew cab how many people need to sit in there tons of options it is then there's the option of the single rear wheel or a dually truck depending on how much you're pulling and then they have the special tow packages back in the day you're lucky to get a tow ball put on those things now you have special cooling transmissions and fifth wheel attachments and nothing like the first car I ever drove which was a 72 f100 camper special engine options have range anywhere from four-cylinder to six-cylinder to v8 diesel depending on what you want they can add lots of different options to give you a lot some more power yeah in fact can you believe 40% of the trucks produced today by Ford cost over $40,000 Wow and people think those supercars extra is a lot of money yeah I think sometimes people's put buy a big pickup truck but for 40 50 grand and put another 30 grand into mods I could have a Ferrari they could and actually eighteen percent of the cars on today's roads are trucks in the United States yeah that doesn't surprise me so you know car boys are they're not here to listen to me talk why don't you you're thinking share out and tell us which ones to buy and which ones not to let's do it okay welcome to Kansas skies it's a windy day we're gonna have a big winter storm tonight and the wind is crazy it's making all kinds of noises in the shop we apologize for that but now that mrs. wizard has given us a little history on trucks let's talk about which ones you should buy which ones you shouldn't again in the half-ton gasoline full-size trucks that's where we're not talking about dirham axes and all this stuff just a half tons so let's get started and let's start out with chevrolet the ones in this segment would to buy would be ninety nine to two thousand six Chevy or GMC 1500 whether that be extended cab long bed it doesn't matter we're just talking about the truck in general how its set up is gonna be your your opinion or how you want your truck set up but these are the years of the LS based four point eight five point three motor and it predates the active fuel management option that turns a v8 into v4 and multiple displacement so much trouble with those nothing but trouble with those these are the years to buy a Chevy truck that except for normal wear and tear you can expect to get in it it starts it goes that's just this is the era of trucks from Chevrolet that I prefer no hassle no BS they run they work and they're easy easy easy to work on I can pull an LS motor apart blindfolded I mean it's just so easy to work on so those are the ones I recommend to buy in the Chevy GMC segment the one not to buy in this segment is 2007 and newer Chevy or GMC half-ton pickup truck now I'm not necessarily meaning 20 17 18 19 I'm not too familiar with those some of those are still under warranty I've not had them in the shop what are the failure rates I'm not sure on those yet mainly it'd be like 9 10 11 12 in that range and the reason for that is strictly not it's not the trucks fault it and it's not even really the engine fault so much as the active fuel management on these I've done so many cams and lifters on these and and you have to pull the heads off to get the cam out and it's usually a 3,500 to 4,500 in that range depending on how much damage there is to get this taken care of and usually you delete the system and put it back to standard lifters and that's usually what I've done but it's just so much trouble I know a guy that works at a GM dealership in Wichita and in any given time of the month there'll be at least two or three of these trucks and with the heads off it's just like oh my goodness it's such a prolific problem yeah you owe the bank $40,000 on it you're not going to say oh don't fix it I'll just Park it so people fix them but it's just really sad and you're gonna find out this problem isn't just with Chevrolet it stems on other makes too so let's move on to the next segment now we're going to move to Ford half-ton full-size gasoline trucks and the ones to buy in this segment is 97 to 2003 f150 these have the 4.6 and the non 3-valve 5.4 and they do have some sparkplug issues with the engines but that's that's not such a huge problem you can get that taken care with healy coils and fix it and be back on the road but generally these engines are reliable they just chug along and keep going crazy Dee had a green I think it was a 99 or 98 it just keeps going and going over 250,000 miles no trouble they don't look the best they have their styling is it's not so great but they're okay they're reliable you can get them fairly cheap forged seem to be the cheaper trucks in those years and those are the ones to buy they're really a good truck the ones not to buy or 2004 to 2010 f-150 specifically with the 3 valve 5.4 the 4.6 liters if you get one of those I guess those would be okay but this is specifically the three valve 5.4 if you if you're not familiar with the issues of these engines click the link below and you can check my video in the past that I did it got so many views it's insane because this this problem is the most prolific horrific problem of all trucks to me it is just nasty there are people that say that this problem can be fixed by cam phasers and this or that I'm not going to send a customer away and that's all that I fixed and then it comes back six months later it's clacking this cam phasers are clacking again so I thought we had this fixed and I've been through that problem before I personally didn't do the repairs but at the shop I worked at in years past they tried the cam phaser timing chain issues after about the fifth one the owner of that shops that you know what if a customer has this problem they're getting a new engine or get out we're not gonna mess around with timing chains and phasers Ford never did do a recall on this because percentage-wise there wasn't enough I suppose but I have seen so many I actually have one coming in in a couple of weeks it's a no 4 f150 it's getting a new engine this would be number 14 guys engine number 14 at $6,200 Apollo's the only reason this person's fixing it is because it's cheaper than buying another truck they got the truck for really cheap by the time they fix it they'll be in it about what a new a good truck is in that range so they're not losing anything and I get it I understand that I agree with him on that but unless you're prepared like this customer will be to spend 6 or 7 grand pow right after you buy the truck stay away from these trucks just don't do it you see one on the lot oh that's really cheap don't do it guys walk away now we're going to move to the Dodge segment again half ton gas full-size pickup trucks and the ones to buy is 94 to 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 these actually look really good I think they look classy even today I see 95 96 Dodge Rams on the road that are clean and they're in good shape and it's like that steel today looks like a really nice truck they look good this is the era of 5.2 5.9 and then at the end of this era they got the 5.7 Hemi these are all good engines excellent excellent engines the 5.2 and 5.9 were never known to be super powerhouses but they last they pull stuff they they do the job without a whole bunch of trouble and any engine that's out there you can find things wrong with production runs of engines but these didn't have a whole lot of truck trouble there were some transmission issues with these but usually by now you can get that fixed for our grand 1,500 bucks have someone pull the transmission rebuild it and maybe at the most 2 grand that's not horrific that's not the end of the world and you can have a good running truck these are the ones that I recommend to buy and once not to buy this 2006 and newer Dodge Ram 1500 and like I just said on the Chevy's I'm not talking about 2019 and 20s I don't know much about those but these have the same exact problem as the Chevy's do except they don't call it a fm or active fuel management they call it MDS multiple displacement system and it uses same exact technology and guess what this same exact failures you can have cams they have rollers on the lifters that roll on the camshaft and this goes bad and then the lifter turned sideways it wipes out the block and destroys the engine I've done several sets of these already where you have to again pull the heads on a Hemi MDS Hemi pull the cam out put a set of lifters cama three or four grand I just I just can't believe that two different manufacturers using the same technology but completely different parts have the same failures all over again it just really saddens me I don't want you guys to buy one of these because I don't want you to get it home and you're excited about your truck and you start hearing the tech tech tech tech tech or even the lifter makes sound it sounds just like that in fact that you guys may laugh but it sounds just like that then you know that sound is $4,000 there is no way around it $4,000 and it's just like your heart sinks so stay away from those guys oh and before we move on to the next segment the 4.7 liter dodge I don't care if it's sending it to Jeep I don't care if it's in a Dodge Ram I don't care if it's in a Dakota run blown head gasket blown head gasket all the time I've had vehicles come in here it gets totaled it's totaled the head gaskets blown five or six grand to fix the head gaskets and the vehicles not worth that so the vehicle gets towed away totaled total total guys it's ruined so stay away from the 4.7 now we move on to Nissan full-size half-ton gas-powered trucks I'm gonna start with not too biased because it's gonna move us to the two buys the ones not to buy is 2003 to 2015 Nissan Titan with a five point six liter in it these had numerous numerous catalytic converter problems and I did a previous video on this already it's not so much that the cats go bad it's that the cats go bad and somehow pieces of the ceramic material inside gets sucked up into the engine and it destroys the whole engine when I was working at a previous shop we had our mottos and tightened several of them come in we put new engines in all because the cats went bad if you watch my previous video it talks about a couple that had their Armada in their whole Bahamas vacation was ruined and the lady cried said in their crying in the waiting room because the cats went bad and ruined the truck engine there wasn't enough for a recall however I don't want to see this happen to you guys because you know it probably will and I know it would happen to me too if I went and bought a Titan sure enough that it would have that problem do every single Titan on the face of the earth do this no but the chances are that it will happen to you or very good if it's on the use market and you go out and buy one and then your your significant other is crying in the living room what did we buy this truck is is horrible don't do it guys now the one to buy is a 16 and newer Nissan Titan it seems that they got this issue taken care of by then and they're really a good truck except for that problem so if you thinking about the ones not to buy if you can take care of the cat problem the engines are ok they're not good on gas but 16 in newer Nissan Titans they seem to have this problem taking care of and they're really not that bad of a truck let's move on to the the last segment this one's really easy guys you know I'm a we're gonna move on to Toyota and you guys know I'm a big fan of Toyota so this is gonna be really fast are you guys ready the ones not to buy none the ones to buy any of them that's it that's it for Toyota they're that good guys Toyota is that good now hey like I said any car maker is gonna have troubles they're gonna have problems there is no perfect vehicle out there but so many times I've told people buy a Toyota if you're looking for a truck and I constantly get the comment when they come back I'm sure glad I bought that truck I put ten thousand miles twenty thousand miles on it all I've done is oil changes thank you for recommending to that doing to make car wizard they're just as good the Tundra's with the 5.7 engine and them they're very powerful they can tow boat they can tow cars they're just as capable in fact a little larger than most American cars guys if I'm in the market today for a full-size truck 40 to 50 grand range and I want to buy a newer truck hands-down Toyota Tundra I wouldn't even think twice about it that's the one I would buy now just like so many times happens before whether it's a car an SUV a try I recommend a Toyota that same customer comes back and says oh my god car wizard that's 10 or 15 grand outside of my budget there's a reason so that it's outside of your budget because they're damn good trucks and cars it could if you if you're in a budget and you want a Toyota you can get a little bit older one and would fit your budget and still be a very good truck but there's so many times that I told people go buy a Toyota oh that was outside of our budget so we bought an Acadia we bought this we put anything it breaks and then they're like oh we should have listened to you over and over and over again guys find a way to make your budget fit that truck a Toyota don't find a way to make a piece of junk fit your budget that doesn't work that doesn't make sense [Music] hey if it has three hundred and seventy five thousand miles on it yeah I wouldn't I wouldn't buy one of those at all because it's too many miles or if it's been in a wreck and it's been rebuilt that's one thing for me if I open the door and I see that sticker on the door jamb that says rebuilt salvaged or whatever I don't care how good of a job they did I'm not buying it I will not buy one of those because you don't know how good of a job they did and you start having a trouble year a year from now and you come to find out it's because it was wrecked you're stuck with it I don't I don't trust that stuff so anyways those are the two buy not to buy full-size gas power half ton truck we'll do the others later we'll do the big dually diesels and all that stuff that'll be another video later and we're also going to do another video on the small and midsize trucks but that's for the full-size gas half-ton trucks so if you want to know what kind of tools I use or if you're interested in buying the tools I use check my Amazon affiliates page in the
