Iโ€™ve had very good reliability on my 2007 2.5 L Jetta. Itโ€™s got 130,000 miles on it and is going strong. We had a 2004 1.8t that had a lot more reliability issues.

welcome back to another edition of the wizard shop you guys have been really enjoying the buy this not that videos I've been doing and I've actually gotten some requests there's been some for Audi there's been some for others but there's been a lot of requests for Volkswagen and that's what we're going to do today we're doing VW [Music] now as many of you know Volkswagen is one of the most well known companies in the history of cars it also has one of the most well known cars in the world the Volkswagen Beetle and that's where the history of Volkswagen really begin is with the beetle and unfortunately with Adolf Hitler he wanted a car for his people that was uniform and everyone had one and that was the only car that they drove and the product of that was the beetle Ferdinand Porsche was involved with this he designed the beetle and many other cars to come after that including Porsches any fast forward today Volkswagen has been around since that time all the way till now without a break they haven't gone under they haven't gone bankrupt it's been a very strong company and today they own outtie they own for sure they own Bentley they own Lamborghini huge huge multifaceted company I actually don't have a Volkswagen in my shop today so I thought the next best thing was a Volkswagen product and behoove EES 996 turbo which is actually 99% done 99.6% done it runs everything's good to go just need to get the wheels on it and do the air conditioning back in business so glad I'll be glad to have that out of here so without further ado let's get started in the segment of small cars we're gonna start out with the 2 by is 2008 to 2012 Volkswagen Golf these cars are very actually very reliable they're good on gas they're stylish it's small that's why we're in a small car segment and amazingly they actually have four doors it's a really cool little car any of these cars have similar platforms as I'm recommending the golf the beetle would also be included but in in that price range I've seen a lot of these cars in the shop the gas motors and they just run and run and run they don't really have a whole bunch of huge trouble something really a good car so that would be the one I recommend to buy the one not to buy will be the 2008 to 2012 VW golf but there's a difference the one I'm recommended not to buy is the same car but with a TDI with a diesel and you're gonna hear that a lot today on all Minot Dubai's are the newer versions of the TDI is with the diesel particulate filter they add blue system absolute nothing but headaches any little sensor goes wrong reduce performance 30 miles an hour on the highway max speed and you finally get to the bottom of it this is bad that's bad mm here 1500 there 3,000 there and pretty soon you're good gas mileage is not so good anymore because you lost all that in the cost of repairs I've had so many of these that I've had customers come in and they have issues and they say oh my god that's so expensive no I'm not doing that I'm not fixing that so in that light I would say not to buy one of those because you very likely could end up in that situation I'm not a diesel hater I love Diesel's actually like them what I don't like is the government mandated emissions that are stuck on power strokes Duramax is Cummins everything that's today it takes wonderful good engines and chokes them to death and makes complex systems that break and leave you stranded on the side of the road regenerating and when they break ten twenty thousand dollars on a truck so yes it's ridiculous now we're going to move up to the mid-size segment and the one I'm going to recommend to buy is 95 205 jetta sportwagen or station wagon specifically the station wagon I think those are beautiful cars that the style of it there's a small little wagon it has very high utility you can load stuff in it and also in this range of the year model oh five and ninety five I would really recommend the diesel the TDI just a minute ago I recommend not to get ones I'm talking about the newer models these are the older models TDI is they don't have a bunch of the contraptions and garbage on it choking it to death it's just a simple turbo diesel engine they get very very good mileage 4550 some people have claimed 55 miles-per-gallon an old station wagon and they're reliable they're easy to work on they're for sale all over Craigslist with over 200,000 miles you can't tell me that's not reliable and parts are fairly cheap they're not super outrageous expensive the TDI engine especially in these years would easily go 300 thousand miles maybe even four I mean they really last a long time and if you're into performance there's a lot of tuning out there there's things you can do to get more power out of these really a cool car the one not to buy it's the same car but in 2006 to 2011 Jetta or Jetta wagon like I said it a minute ago it's going to come down to all the strict emission systems that are on the diesels in this segment I really don't recommend just like I've mentioned a minute ago is the specifically the TDI model in these years because of the headaches they have with again the AdBlue system the the DPF the holy mission system for these diesels it's just an absolute nightmare and so that was the one I would recommend not to buy in this segment if you're in that range looking for a midsize car and there's a whole different slew of ranges of Jettas pretty much Jetta is gonna be your mid-sized car 206 211 TDI stay away don't buy it don't be lured by the good gas mileage you will lose it in repairs I guarantee it in the large car segment the one I recommend to buy is 2006 to 2012 Volkswagen Phaeton now a lot of you might say oh my god that's an expensive why would why would you recommend such a high-end car but you can actually pick them up very cheap because people are afraid to work on especially the w12 you can pick one of these up ten twelve fifteen thousand dollars used in good condition these things are set up inside very similar to a Bentley Continental they are eat elite Volkswagen they got the best leather they got features like and galore they got the w12 engine it's like buying a Bentley almost for 15 grand so that's the one in in the segment to buy I really recommend the Phaeton maybe the repairs might be kind of expensive but for what getting for what UK the really cool car the ones I recommend not to buy in this segment is 2006 newer Volkswagen Passat TDI specifically the TDI just at the last couple of segments we talked about with having all the emissions stuff same story here guys the savings you get in fuel economy will be lost in repairs there's there's no gain it's a wash might as well get a gasoline motor because unless you're getting an older-model TDI the newer ones I just say forget it just don't do it now we're going to move on to the SUV segment and in this segment than when I recommend to buy is 2007 to 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan specifically with a 2-liter TSI four-cylinder gas engine these are actually very good engines they're similar to the Ford EcoBoost 2-liter very now DQ fives and a fours all kinds of different outies but this engine is it's really a good engine it's good fuel economy there's a q5 actually just did an oil change on a little bit ago this week that has this 2.0 TSI motor in it and I was just amazed I looked at us and wow that is so easy to work on I can reach around the whole engine around the back or on the front besides the one not to buy will be 2002 to 2007 Volkswagen Touareg TDI v10 not only is I mean a TDI in these years is really not that bad but this specific model with the v10 is an absolute nightmare to work on there's an article on Jalopnik there's a guy on there that bought one and he said it almost pulled his hair out it was absolutely disgusting trying to work on it I have the same problem with the Audi s6 that I used to have just about everything you want to do on the engine is engine out engine out engine out there's no room to get to anything and if you're gonna pay a shop to work on this thing five hundred dollars a thousand no three and five and seven thousand it's gonna be extremely expensive extremely hard to work on and you're not gonna like the car after about a year dealing with this I really don't recommend by one of the v10 TDI Tour eggs now we won the sports section and in Volkswagen there's really not a whole lot of sport section to be had if you're looking for sports sport cars there's outie there's Porsche there's Lamborghini there's all kinds of cars that Volkswagen owns but in the specific Volkswagen realm I mean there's not a whole lot to pick from the one that I recommend to buy is 2003 to 2008 Volkswagen GTI this is basically a golf but it's got the 2.0 turbo TSI motor it's very fast they handle very good and I've driven when they're extremely fun to drive and they're not too hard to work on just like I mentioned a minute ago on those motors so in the sports car category which there like I said there's not much to choose from a GTI and that year range is the way to go and being that I don't have a whole lot to choose from in a sports car category the ones I recommend not to buy now really any of the older sporty type Volkswagens would be the GTI of the old days the siroccos the the rabbit's any of those with the old CIS Bosch jetronic style system they're full of vacuum lines they're full of all kinds of things that are hard to work on they can be very expensive to working so hard to find the parts for these cars I've had and I'm in in and out of my shop and the people are like I really didn't plan on putting this kind of money into this car it was this is way over my budget you know a warm-up regulator is $350 and then you get the fuel distributor or distributor head goes bad or a fuel pump I mean it's just so complex most mechanics these days your average shop will not work on these cars you have to find somebody who knows how to work on them so in the sport category stay away from those cars if you don't want to put a bunch of money into repairs I want to thank you guys for watching today we got many more cool buy this not that videos to come we got a request for Volkswagen so I decided to do the Volkswagen starting with this video if you want to submit some comments we're gonna do questions and answer Q&A for Volkswagen go ahead and submit your comments and I'll pick some of the questions that you guys give to me and I'll answer them in a video and we'll have a QA Volkswagen coming up so any cool tools I use check out Amazon affiliates page if you haven't subscribed already hit the subscribe button trust me guys there's tons more cool videos to come I hope you guys enjoyed this one and thanks for watching [Music] what's that big white thing behind you that's my Cadillac the Fleetwood slow hammer as soon as I can get stuff like this done and get it out of my shop it's taking up too much time there's a lot of cars taking up a lot of time in here and on the weekends after I've spent day after day after day working on cars the last thing I want to do on my saturday is work on more cars so there sits the Fleetwood slow hem I'll get to it I'll get it done especially this winter guys I'm really actually starting to look forward to get it going so we'll get it going
