[Music] welcome back to another edition of the wizard shop today we have mrs. Wizards ml350 in we're going to put it on the lift we're gonna do a simple oil change but I'm gonna show you guys it's not so simple what you get for the cost that you spend an oil change here at my shop what are the things that I check for the price and also some of the pitfalls of going to dealerships or some of the quick lube places some of the scams they try to pull on you try to pull the wool over your eyes I'm going to show you what an oil change should be like how it should go the things that I check and how it can also go so very wrong if you're at a dealership you're not very mechanically inclined they come in here with this and this and that's wrong and try to scare you into purchasing more stuff so let's get this thing on the lift and do an oil change [Music] [Music] okay the first thing we're going to do is take this little belly pan off the front so we can get to the engine and inspect underneath your radiator and basically check those things out that are underneath that panel so we got the little belly pan down the first thing I check when I'm up here is I start checking hoses look at any of the flexible rubber hoses make sure they're not ballooning or leaking or anything of that nature I checked the radiator side tanks or if it's a top bottom type radiator check the top and bottom this one has side tanks I'll check trans cooler lines check the fan you can look inside of here and look for any kind of damage on the radiator if there's any leaks or pinholes and come around here and you can check the belts look for front main seal leaks or any kind of issues there you can look at the AC compressor and see if it's leaking or not I don't see anything going on here then we move on to the front wheels check sway bar or links sway bar bushings check Tyrod boots ball joint boots brake pads which all look great then I come around also check the struts up top see if they're leaking oil out of the struts and this one's not check for any looseness on the wheel check the brake pad out here it looks good so keep in mind as I'm going along this isn't this is your oil change I'm checking safety checks I'm checking for any kind of major issues I'm not checking every single bolt every single nut that's not going to be a typical at 50 or $100 oil change if I go start checking that detailed we're getting into a pre pre-purchase inspection or something crazy that's going to be two or three hundred dollars if you're not paying for it I'm not doing it so we're doing a basic oil change and check over this is still better than any kind of your quick lube or dealerships there's gonna be a lot of high-pressure sales there they're going to try to push you into this and this and this and that I'm just going to tell you exactly what's wrong with your car and what's good with your car and do the oil change and move you on down the road and let you get back to what you're doing so let's check over here these pads good sway bar link bushing good all the little boots tie rods and ball joint boots strut any kind of looseness that's good you check the steering rack aren't those common to leak on this car wizard yeah they would be coming on the MLS and as we can see here it's got some tiny tiny seepage right here now this being a common issue on these and I've been monitoring this ever since we've been doing oil changes on this car here's something that can really get a person who's not mechanically inclined in trouble at a dealership or one of the quick lube places they see that seepage that we just saw it can probably go another 10 years that way and it probably won't even drip on the ground it's not an issue not a safety concern they're going to come into the office they're going to say your steering racks leaking they're going not going to tell you how bad or how little it's leaking they're just going to say it's leaking you need a new steering rack it's gonna be twenty five hundred bucks and if you don't do it today it could crash you could have a safety issue you could run into somebody if you lose control of your vehicle and you and you being a customer who's not maybe not mechanically inclined will say oh my goodness yes let's do it did it need to be done no not at all so these are issues that I address and I show the customer I say I've seen this leak let's keep an eye on it the next time it comes in if the leak continues to grow then we can address it at that time it's not a safety concern it's not going to fail on him I just let the customer know about it so there's no kind of shenanigans going on here at Omega Auto clinic we just tell you what we see you can make a decision from there what you'd like to do so let's continue on down the line check the front differential looks good check the front drive shaft it's nice and tight and keep on going down why we see a little seepage here I've come around this is another leak that I've been monitoring for two years now and I checked the transmission fluid level I checked the transfer case level and it's hardly even moved I cleaned this off probably once a year so I can monitor if the leaks getting worse or something along that lines so you can see it's just a seep right here it's just muddy and we live on a dirt road so any kind of oil or seepage is going to be an issue this is something again I would discuss with a customer and say this is something we need to watch if it gets to where it's dripping on the ground then we need to look into removing or replacing any seals or anything that might be leaking up there what I'm telling you guys as far as dealership stuff is not me attacking dealerships or attacking quick loops I'm only going by what I've seen with my customers come in they come in with a printout I went to get an oil change at such-and-such dealership here's nine thousand dollars worth of repairs did they say if I don't do them this week it's gonna be an accident I'm gonna get hurt I go to check it over and there's little seepage just like this or the one up there and it ends up being no it doesn't need to be done to day it's something that can be watched and monitored and if it gets worse we can address it there's seals that need to be replaced or something that can be done this is this is missus Wizards car I'm not going to skimp on stuff if there's a safety concern I'm not going to have her get hurt but I'm not doing unnecessary repairs either this would be something that a dealership would would come out and show maybe even show you this leak and say you need the entire all of the transfer case replaced four thousand dollars and it needs to be done this week they're going to push you and push it you need to do this then the truth is no you don't this has been going on for two years it seeps a little bit I clean it if it gets a lot worse where we start seeing a puddle on the ground I'll be pulling the transfer case and replacing the seals that need to be replaced so here we have a rear driveshaft CV joint here which looks good we'll check that this off doesn't look like it's damaged or anything so let's move on back to the rear there's a rear differential we'll check the input seal and it's dry I'll check the Flex discs for any cracks and it looks good everything looks good there check the output shafts on the differential there's no leaks check the CV shafts for any looseness it would be normal for them to move in and out not up and down again we're checking ball joint boots check sway bar links and bushings check brakes and if you check some of my previous videos you'll see that we've done a brake job on this car already and they're like new check for any looseness and it's good check the rear mufflers exhaust for any dents or damage and I don't see anything there so next thing we're going to do is check fluids these little straws that come on spray cans like brake cleaner or different things of that nature I keep those I don't throw them away because they're perfect you bend them in a 90 degree angle and you can put it right in here check the fluid level it's nice and full okay now we'll move up to the transfer case nice and full you know issue there the fluids clean it's nice and red to go there now we'll check this differential up front nice and full nice and clean food let's go ahead and get this oil drain now well they're wolves draining I'd like to take a look at tire treads check for wear patterns check things of that nature and these tires are about 50% used up they have wear bars and they're about halfway down to the wear bars they still got some life left in them everything looks good on the tires okay so our tires all look good they sold out quite a bit of life left in them they're not m evenly wearing or anything like that so this is almost done draining here got me a new little copper washer on there another common issue that I fix several of from people going to quick lubes stripped out oil pan bolts I get young guy under there doesn't have a lot of experience and he thinks tighter is better so let's go as tight as we can go and he doesn't realize that the oil pans made out of sheet metal or even some newer cars plastic so crack and break and strip and they glue it or try to figure out a way out of it this brake cleaner clean up my mess any kind of a mess that I made here this is actually something with people that I've trained doing oil changes they don't clean up the mess afterwards and there's still oil all over the sway bar and then the customer takes at home and it's dripping oil on their driveway instantly they think you did something wrong my car is leaking they bring it back and they're very unhappy and the truth is that there was nothing wrong just residual oil the part the training part that I try to instill in them is we don't leave residual oil behind this isn't this isn't a Grandpa's tractor this is somebody's car so got that done now all the oils out of it we can put the little belly pan back on and lower the car down [Music] next thing I'm gonna do is just check fluids check through the levels mostly antifreeze is good check the power steering it's good check brake fluid good check the belt look for any sand or rocks that's in the grooves any cracks this belts fairly new so it's good this a common thing that most quick places tell you you need to get replaced yep you need a belt you need an air filter something you guys need to really watch I've had family members and friends and people that I know I actually had an uncle one time he took a an IROC Camaro to a quick lube place they came in with a fuel filter he he himself changed the fuel filter on this car he knows what the fuel filter looked like they brought in some fuel filter off of some other vehicle it didn't even match the ports weren't even the same and I said look and they dumped out all this dirt out of it you need a new fuel filter and tried to scare him into it they told him wherever you got that from it wasn't for my car put it back wherever you got it continued with my oil change please you guys really need to be careful some of these places you go you really should find your trusted mechanic a guy that you trust that works on your car and have them do your oil changes it may be more convenient to go to the quick lube or the dealership but when me and Miss wizard were newly married she had an Oldsmobile Alero and part of the package when we bought it free oil changes for a year and they changed the oil and that's it not even the filter I finally checked it out when day I was going to do the oil change myself we were running out of time it had the same filter when we bought it it never even been changed shame on me for not checking I took it for granted that you know they're doing a good service but they weren't I finally got a new filter and change the oil and I we've still got several months left on this oil Chang free oil change but we're not going to use it we're not going back so you're going to these places for a cheaper oil change but are you really saving any money if if they're making you replace parts that aren't necessary to be replaced or they're skipping over things or not checking certain things it's just kind of an informative video what I do want oil change is what I check and some of the things to watch out for when you are sitting in the office at a place a dealership or a quickly place that when they come into the office so oh look what we found be very skeptical tell them I'll take it to my personal mechanic and let them look it over and we'll see where we go from there thank you don't let them push you into right now do it right now and get this oil filter off I've already got it broke loose let that drain for a minute okay when we get this filter replaced and put new o-rings it comes with new o-rings get the older oil filter off let it drain in there like the kit comes with new o-ring so - we'll just go ahead and replace them take that one off let's throw it in there that went off and then the large one on the outer portion of threads here new filter goes on some of you have mentioned in the past wizard didn't fill up the oil chamber when he put a new oil filter on that's impossible especially on this vehicle if I dump a quart of oil in there it's gonna drain into the crankcase and steel they leave an empty chamber look in there where'd the oil go I pulled the oil filter out it wasn't even that wet that's dry in there the oil just drains right down into the crankcase so what good does it do to fill it up well I mean what are you gonna do dump oil in it and then it drains back down and dump more I don't understand that thinking so anyways but the oil filter on now it's time to put the oil in Mobil 1 5w30 so I got 7 quarts in for now I believe these take eight and a half we're going to start it up and then we'll go from there while I'm in there I'm going to clear out if whatever vehicle I'm working on I'll clear out the oil maintenance light or oil counter or anything like that all reset that while I'm letting the oil circulate so go ahead and do that the procedure you're going to use to reset the oil life monitor on your vehicle is going to differ from one vehicle to the next you have to I frequently have to go on Google and check it out there's so many different ways even within mercedes-benz there's different buttons different ways some of them you do the R button some of you do the phone in the okay button you have to just check it out sometimes online oil change sticker while I let the will settle in the engine all right oil changes are pretty important on your car with today's vehicles they'll use low tension rings piston rings and things in the engine and oil consumption is actually considered normal even on a 20-19 vehicle brand new it might be only half a quart every thousand miles it's not a whole lot really that if you let your car go ten thousand miles with an oil change that's five quarts of oil that you used up ii-i've seen it I had a lady come one time up with a what was it a it's a Kia Soul I think check engine light on and it was cam camshaft actuator codes and it just can't it just occurred to me in my mind I bet it's I bet it's almost out of oil and sure enough I pulled the dipstick it was nothing on it it was dry and I was just like oh my goodness this lady's just about to ruin her engine and I explained it to her and she says well I just hadn't oil change I said really do you have your receipt and she had it and I looked at it it was a year ago 12,000 miles ago she said oh wow it just slipped my mind I guess I guess that slipped my mind you really need to pay attention especially on modern car set an alarm on your phone for three months or five months or whatever you choose to at least check the oil or get it checked by somebody a trusted person or mechanic or or whatever you can't just run your engine out of oil it it's very bad it's very costly so let's check the oil on here and see where we're at it needs about a quart more [Applause] about a half a quart more and that ends up being right at what I've said eight and a half quarts perfect so that finishes it up on the oil change on here the next video I'm going to do is actually going to be a QA a lot of people have questions they leave in the comments questions about me what did I learn to be a mechanic or how to how this or how that if you got questions we're going to check the first hundred or so comments off of this video and we'll be answering those questions in the next video we're going to start a once a month QA with the car wizard question that you have for me so any tools or anything you've seen that I use check my Amazon affiliates page they're for sale there check our merchandise page I got shirts and hoodies and hats and things for sale there and again thanks for watching click the
