[Music] thank you hello honey I know you haven't heard much from me since I moved away [Music] hello honey I think I'm all done running this time I'll stay if you let me see [Music] but I'm coming home foreign [Music] we are picking up my 1949 Cessna 140a after it got fresh paint and interior done at Artcraft in Santa Maria California before I brought the plane to Artcraft I also got a Garmin install at Neil Aviation where they also brought the panel back to life and these upgrades all together will complete the restoration project 9477 Alpha looks like a completely new airplane for the paint we went with a classic white base with a navy blue accent color the blue is actually University of Michigan navy blue so we're replacing that Ohio state-esque paint job with a nice University of Michigan inspired paint job so sorry to all my OSU fans out there but this plane is officially a Michigan fan now we went with a scheme that's almost identical to the factory scheme for 140s with a couple little twists just to make it personalized in mine I wanted a lot of nice clean lines that big stripe you see on the tail and all of the Vintage lettering the Vintage lettering I think is my favorite part of the paint during the paint process art crafted a ton of Bodywork to really bring this plane back to life and it had a lot of dents and they're really mostly all gone now it looks beautiful from the outside just nice and smooth Artcraft also polished the plane and had it ceramic coated so the paint longevity will be really really good after the fact they also polished up my windows said they look fresh and new and they polished my skull cap spinner as well we weren't sure how that would turn out but thank you Alex for trying to polish it and actually bringing it back to life because I could do my makeup in that spinner right now because it's so shiny we also did paint the wheel pants they are not on the plane right now we are waiting on a couple parts to install them but they will be on the plane for Oshkosh so we'll be installing them at Oshkosh but for now we're leaving the 800 size tires on which I actually prefer flying with anyway so we will be putting the wheel pins on we will be putting smaller tires on but for now we're leaving on the original tires on the panel we installed the GNX 375 GPS and transponder a GNC 255 navcom that also works as like a calm and a half because you can monitor the standby frequency and two GSB 15 USBC ports we also installed two GI 275s the attitude indicator and the HSI which will be awesome because this plane didn't even have a normal attitude indicator or a heading indicator before this install Neil Aviation completely refresh the panel they took the entire panel apart they powder coated all of the pieces and they even actually manufactured some of the pieces and they polished the piano keys and just made sure everything looks nice and tidy we also installed watt lights all around the plane we installed a new Beacon New navs and strobes new Landing light new taxi light I didn't even have a taxi light before that was working so I'm super glad to have that in and overall this plane is so much more beautiful than when we started so I think we're gonna have to give little ugly a new name right now I'm in Santa Maria at Artcraft and we're going to go and take the plane for a test flight and then after that I'm going to be flying the plane back to Camarillo on our flight back to Camarillo I'm going to meet up with my friend Alex in the air who has our friend Braden who is a photographer with him and we're gonna get some good air-to-air shots of the plane on the way back it's a beautiful California day for a nice flight home so I'm going to pre-flight the plane I'll head out on my test flight and then once I come back from that I'll grab you guys and we'll head back to Camarillo [Applause] [Music] uh take you somewhere [Music] in my mind [Music] you guys are as excited as I am so we have our seat belts on door a latch make sure that shut that door shut our circuit breakers are all in our electrical switches are all off except for our Beacon we'll turn our avionics Master on in a minute I just did the test flight so everything is running great and as expected which is good bye Teresa is the best mixture is Rich carpets off throttle we'll do two pumps just slightly cracked primers and unlocked [Music] get some weather our weather frequency is one two one point one five anime airport information Delta 17510 win 3104 visibility one zero sky clear temperature two one dew obviously going to do a whole nother run up just to be safe because that's the smart thing to do in my opinion also if you can tell I'm sitting up a little bit higher which is kind of nice okay so we've got flight controls are free and correct that's the most important thing with this since they removed all the flight controls for the paint our mixture is coming Rich so let's do our mag check again up there aren't both to the left drop and right drop carpet check looks good our oil temp and pressure both in the green we'll go ahead and pull this back don't lean it out while we're on the ground we've got our flight plan in everything is looking great Santa Maria Towers us on 90477 Alpha holding short of Runway three zero at Alpha five ready for departure southeastbound to Camarillo awesome yay I'm so excited the controls and everything just feel so smooth after they took them all apart they probably greased them all and just rigged everything real nice so all right we're going to be making a right turn out clear right 7077 Alpha contact Santa Barbara approach have a good flight Santa Barbara approach 9477 Alpha thank you Santa Barbara approaches us on 904-77 Alpha 1 100 climbing 5 500 just departed Santa Maria going to Camarillo number 9477 Alpha Center November 7 7 operator contact half mile Northeast of Santa Maria center it's two nine or eight nine eight nine or seven seven Alpha huh Perfect all right we are direct Gaviota VOR we're taking the same rate that we did last time super easy so that'd be good so we are heading back it should take us this says about an hour 13 but once we get a little faster that will update I hope I did bugger out student here so I'm gonna go ahead and do that there we go 5 500. might get a little bumpy over the mountains today it is love the videos thank you bringing the 140 back from paint right now he's abused she definitely is now do you have painted or colored or what I got it painted got a panel and Interiors so the whole nine yards it's awesome everybody about to be on YouTube oh yeah of course I'll keep an eye out sounds good it's been like a week and a half since I posted about this plane and this tail number and people already know it's awesome I love it okay we have 2 000 feet to go we're at 3 500. so SoCal is getting the whole southwestern United States really is getting a huge Heat Wave this week so it's pretty hot our oat says it's just over 80 degrees out I think there's a temperature inversion the nice thing now is I would be getting baked by the sun if I didn't have Rose advisors because despite does have like little Skylight so the sun is like beating down but I've got a little bit of shade now so it's kind of nice so during the install Artcraft they did the obviously all of the paint outside all the prep work everything associated with paint but they also did the interior and when they did the interior they put in some insulation and I can definitely tell that it's quieter in here like it's much much quieter a thousand feet to go I like how high up I'm sitting in here 100 feet to go and we're almost to Gaviota perfect my engine will thank me when I get to pitch down and get some air into the engine because she's running a little hot nothing to be concerned about but uh she just doesn't like the hot air so flying to Oshkosh will be fun all right there's 5 500 so let's pitch it forward and we're already leaned out a little bit so that should be good so not only did Artcraft make the seat sit up just a little bit higher for me but they actually gave me a custom cushion for behind my back I didn't want to fit the plane completely to me in case somebody else flies it the cushion like matches the leather November 9477 Alpha contact approach on 125.4 great day one two five point four nine four seven seven Alpha have a good one second alpha 5500.477 alpha Santa Barbara approach Santa Barbara El centimeter two 990.077 alpha almost to Gaviota coming up on the coast be a great Beach day I would love to at some point fly This Plane up to Oceano or another Beach Airport and like actually go to the beach in the plane I think it'd be awesome so it's on the bucket list for sure today is Saturday July 15th and I leave for Oshkosh either I'm planning on Monday I think I was thinking about leaving Sunday but I want a day to just not do anything so we're gonna leave on Monday it'll take us 25 hours of flying to get there and I only want to fly between like 5 a.m and noon for heat and wind so okay we are over Gaviota now the water is so blue today it looks beautiful it is so cool to look out on the airplane and instead of seeing my red cowling that had fingerprints all over and it was just dull and paint chipped I see this nice blue cowling it just looks so beautiful I didn't really know what to expect with the paint or you know with painting an airplane in general but the process was very exciting to watch if you haven't watched the paint drop off and process video you definitely should because I was blown away by all the work that they had to do to get the paint and interior done and there were so many steps to the process and watching the plane transform was so cool almost to Santa Barbara Airport our GPS says we have 36 minutes to go and hopefully once we get to sending metal beat up a little bit I'll purchased on 90477 Alpha we'd like to sort of view of our design available for our little air-to-air shoot that we're gonna do so I'm basically going to be lead the whole time but he's actually going to be the one moving around and taking photos so and then once we're done usually what we would do when we do formation is come in for an overhead break but we're just going to break off I'm going to come in and land and then he'll come in behind me just passing Santa Barbara we're at 3 300 descending actually just 7.94 your favorite approach Runway two five and you can maneuver is necessary for your defense uh currently you're number one to the field and there is no traffic all right we'll uh essentially Circle down here but uh visual two five XL 794. it's like the Marine layer is still over Carpinteria so we'll probably keep it a little bit higher I'll purchase the 90477 alpha we'd like to cancel play following that's not 77 Alpha Radar Service terminating squawk VFR predicting change is approved have a good day and switch to air to Air and I'm going to get the atis in just so I have it ready to go Alex you up hey bro what's up just exited Santa Barbara's airspace so I'm coming your way where you at oh sitting right over top of the Winter Harbor let's hear uh altitude 2300 you want me to hold it right there yep I'm coming up oh the people are on the beach down there what a beautiful day I got you visually I gotcha sweet so uh 80 mile an hour for me traffic right above us no Factor give me give me an inch [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] all right you guys good whatever brother we made it yay we're home adventures mixture pulling and now blades are off and lightning lights are up Camarillo ground Cessna 90477 Alpha off of Runway two six at Bravo taxi East End assessment minor four seven seven Alpha camera ground Texas India hotel Alpha Hotel Alpha foxtrot to the East End 9477 Alpha a little bit different taxi instructions that was a beautiful flight back super easy in two days we're leaving for Oshkosh I'm so excited to take you guys Along on that flight and it'll be quite the adventure I think avionics all right so our Beacon's coming off Avionics so we're back in my hangar I am so excited that I was able to put the plane in here because the Bonanza is getting maintenance done on it right now A little update on the Bonanza actually I have not forgotten about the Bonanza I have just been waiting for my propeller to come back from the propeller shop for a little bit of time now my Bonanza has the beach 215 electric propeller so there's only a few shops in the country that can work on it and it had some things that needed to be fixed but they're all fixed now and while I will be leaving in this plane for Oshkosh on Monday of this week Graham is going to actually get my Bonanza test fly after the annual and fly it out to Oshkosh for me so both planes will be at Oshkosh I was going to fly the Bonanza out to Oshkosh around the 4th of July but it just didn't work out but that's okay both planes will be there they'll get there safely so I'm super excited to fly this to Oshkosh but before we go to Oshkosh I wanted to give you guys kind of an in-depth look at everything that we did to this airplane because when I say that we did paint and interior and the panel it's so much more than that there is so much more craftsmanship and work and effort that goes into restoring an airplane of this age than just putting some paint on putting a nice interior in and putting some avionics in the panel so I think it's really important to Showcase that and talk about some of the interesting things that we came across in the restoration the goal of all of this restoration is to bring the airplane up to 2023 standards in terms of capability but also keep the Vintage feel keep the Vintage look keep the airplane's character and really just give it a nice refresh so you'll see as we go through everything that we've kept the old style look of all of the details so for example on the paint Scheme we left the Vintage Stripes here we left the 140 lettering and the Cessna lettering we actually added that lettering it wasn't even in before but it's on a lot of vintage Cessnas and I think it brings a lot of charming character to the airplane we went with a very simple vintage paint design and you'll also notice on the panel instead of taking the entire panel out and putting a fresh new piece of metal in we reused a lot of the old panel pieces and even re-fabricated some of those pieces as well I think it's important to respect the history and the character of the airplanes and so I love being able to do this it's something I'm super passionate about anyway I figured we could start with the panel Neil Aviation did the panel restoration on my 140a and we used all Garmin avionics on the install the first thing you'll probably notice is that we change the color for the restoration the panel was a two-tone light gray and dark gray color with that wood vinyl piece in the middle I don't know what it is with vintage old airplanes and like fake wood pieces but the Bonanza had it too not that big of a fan I think somebody probably put that in in like the 70s or 80s because it is not what the original panel center plate looks like we decided to change the panel color to something that would complement the exterior colors that I had chosen for the plane the railings on the side of the airplane and some other interior trim pieces are also the same tan color which art craft painted but Neil Aviation has a painter who did the panel pieces and they turned out really really nice some other details on the panel are we left the silver polished bezels in nail Aviation polished these bezels up they were pretty dull when and I brought them in and they also polished the piano keys at the bottom that's one of my favorite touches moving from left to right on the panel the first thing you come across is the avionics stack on the top we have a GNX 375 lost GPS and transponder and on the bottom we have the GNC 255 navcom and this is the perfect combination in just these two units we get a wash GPS a transponder nav capability radio capability and not just one com radio capability we get a comma and a half basically because you can monitor the standby frequency and the kicker is the GNC 255 actually acts as an intercom so there's no need for an audio panel which wouldn't really make sense for having one radio in my opinion so it's the perfect combination that gets us everything we need and more for this airplane just so simple I love it on the left side you'll also see one of the two GSB 15 USBC ports that we put in and we also have the headset Jacks for the pilot side in the upgrade video I talked about this a little bit but the headset Jack used to be dead center underneath the panel which caused a lot of the headset wires and the push to talk wires and everything to go right where the flaps are which was super annoying and having the headset Jacks in a normal place on the side of the panel is super nice as we move to the center of the panel you'll find the two gi-275s that we installed the additive indicator and the HSI This Plane didn't even have a regular attitude indicator or a heading indicator before this so to say this is an upgrade is an understatement I think so we added those two gi-275s but we also kept other instruments in the other three remaining holes in the panel to maintain the Vintage feel keep those silver bezels it just looks fantastic as we move down from the center of the panel we come across the center console panel which has all of my controls like my mixture control and my carb heat and it also has all of the labels for the piano key switches when I first bought this plane I know I've talked about this a couple times but it had that find like fake wood piece of vinyl in there the actual plastic itself over that fake piece of wood design was so scratched up you could barely read the lettering original 140as had this sort of grid design I wanted to stay with the 140a look nail Aviation made this piece they laser cut all of the lines in and all of the labels and it looks original but with its own nice twist to not look super Art Deco which just isn't my style so I really love it as we move to the right of the panel you'll see that we have the glove box we have the headset jacks on the passenger side and another USB port from Garmin nail Aviation actually went so far as to replace these side panels with new ones that they fabricated because my old ones were a little warped from you know 70 plus years of flying so they look probably even better than they would have if we use the old existing pieces but it just goes to show that Nila Aviation cares a lot about maintaining the character of my airplane if that's what the customer wants they're going to do it they're going to find a way they're going to make it happen and Dave James the whole team are just so talented in being able to execute what a customer wants Neil Aviation also put in all of the wiring for our new watt lights these ended up actually being installed by Artcraft we replaced all of the lights around the airplane my favorite one that we replaced would be the beacon on the back the beacon when I bought this airplane I thought something was broken when I turned it on because it was so loud we also replaced the position lights strobe lights the taxi light and the landing light all the LEDs are of course super bright I have them on the Bonanza and they've been awesome so to have them on this plane is super cool after the panel work was finished we went and got the airplane and brought it up to Artcraft paint in Santa Maria and this is where really the exterior transformation of the plane happened but also ourcraft did the interior as well Artcraft completed both the exterior and the interior of this airplane in just under four weeks they did an incredible job even with the chyme constraint and really they just produced the highest quality of work when I bought this airplane I knew that I wanted to replace the paint the paint had definitely seen the ramp instead of a hanger I think a little bit too much over the course of 70 years but it also was two colors that I don't particularly like gray and red which if you know me I'm a Michigan fan and who's our biggest enemy Ohio State so no hard feelings but the paint had to go and of course what would I replace Ohio State looking paint with a University of Michigan inspired paint job so for the airplane I knew that I wanted to go with a white base with navy blue accents I thought it would look super classic super vintage and I knew that I wanted to go with a factory inspired design as well if you look at factory Cessna 140 designs you'll see that this is just slightly different but I basically took a bunch of different 140 paint jobs and picked my favorite pieces from each one and Robert at flightlines was able to combine all of the pieces I liked into the job for this airplane I worked with Artcraft very early on in the restoration process to pick the colors for the exterior the interior and the panel they were super helpful and explained to me different strategies that you should use so for example going from dark to light in the interior not choosing a leather or carpet that's going to stain very easily and just really help me out throughout the process we went with a non-metallic blue because a metallic blue would not look as vintage and while this shade of blue might not be one of the original 140a colors I think it looks nice and classic and could definitely pass as something that would be straight from the factory in 1949. if you haven't watched my last video already go watch it because we talk about the entire process to paint this airplane so Artcraft put in a ton of work to make this airplane look like it does right now from the incoming inspection to the prep work to the extreme amount of Bodywork that this airplane needed so definitely go watch that if you want a closer look at what it's like to get an airplane painted Artcraft had an amazing amazing attention to detail when they painted this and they got all of the little details just right I just love the Vintage lettering on the front here and also these Stripes right here and the lettering on the side the paint itself is gorgeous the lines are clean there's no dripping there's no orange peel there's none of that on the exterior of the plane are crafted a lot more than just paint the airplane though they polished my skull cap spinner which was dull before I didn't even think it would polish out to look any good but it did as you can see so thank you to Alex for polishing that that was a great idea they also replaced these Grille pieces I ordered these parts from univer and they put them on painted them so they match up perfectly with the stripes on the cowl early on in the process they realized that I needed a new Rudder Bell crank so we got that ordered and replaced it and they also polished the windows one thing that you want to be careful of with paint is that your windows that have been on your airplane for a long time are probably going to look pretty terrible once you get fresh new new paints on there and we unfortunately didn't have time in our timeline to do fresh windows but my windows weren't in too bad of condition but they look even better now because Artcraft went in and Polished my windows and they looked super new now you don't see them on the airplane now but Artcraft also did paint the wheel pants for my airplane I have never had the wheel pants on the plane while it's been in my ownership because my tires are too big for them but we did order new smaller tires and painted the wheel pants during the time that the airplane was at art craft but unfortunately one of the parts that we needed did not come in in time but we will be putting the wheel pants and the smaller tires on at Oshkosh for the display the plane looks amazing on the outside and it looks just as amazing on the inside Artcraft not only painted the plane but they did a full interior on my airplane before I took the plane to Artcraft I had a gray interior it was definitely an older interior the color of the gray interior with the tan panel looked so bad and I knew that I wanted the panel to be tan to match this paint color so I knew that we could not go with the gray color it was not going to work so we went with a series of dark and medium Browns a lighter tan for the headliner and the seat belts are the same tan as the seats so like the panel we're going to go across the interior from the bottom to the top and on the bottom here we have this nice chocolate carpet color that I picked out with art craft Artcraft also took the rudder petals off and painted them the same color as the panel coming up from the floor on the side panels and on the interior of the baggage compartment you'll see this two-tone leather look that we have going on with this darker brown chocolate leather that matches the carpet and the lighter medium brown leather that we used for the seats this is a small airplane so I wanted to keep the interior very very simple because I thought that too much color or design or change would make it feel very small and busy and but I also didn't want to just have like one color in my interior so this was a great way to have a simple just very Sleek amount of contrast on the door panels Artcraft also painted my window latches and they polished my door handles which look really good on the floor right in front of the seats they painted the entire ledge and also redid my fuel selector they repainted that and they repainted my flap handle as well they also of course included pockets on the doors to hold all the stuff that I need to put in there they asked me if I wanted anything custom like maybe a pen holder or something but I honestly couldn't think of anything I don't really keep a lot of stuff in that but it was nice to have the option of customizing what was actually on the door panel to be what I wanted then we move up to the seats the seats are one of my favorite Parts about this airplane and we went through a lot of deliberation picking out the design the color everything for the seats and they turned out perfect I knew that I wanted to do a single tone for the seats and not do a two-tone scheme like it was before I knew that I wanted them to be a medium brown leather but I also didn't want them to be too boring so Artcraft came up with a super cool retro inspired design for the seat backs with these cool curved lines on both sides and then pleated insert in the middle on the bottom and the pleats are perforated which I think adds just the perfect amount of detail for the One Tone seat to not be boring or anything and they also followed a similar design on the bottoms of the seats which now have like actual curvature to them which is super nice our craft took special care to make sure that the side pieces on the seat back were not elevated I didn't want to be flying with one shoulder higher than the other since the seat back is a bench seat so and Artcraft even made me a custom seat cushion out of the leather they used for my airplane for me to put behind my back when I'm flying the plane they gave me the option of actually just adding more foam to the seat so I'd sit right where I wanted but if I had someone else flying the plane I didn't want them to not be able to fit in it because they adjusted the seats for me and how short I am so they suggested making a custom cushion so that it would still match the interior and still look really good and I love it it's awesome Artcraft put a seat back pocket of course on the back of the seat and they also polished up all of the handles on the seat too so they look really nice and clean in the baggage compartment Artcraft followed the same pattern of the chocolate carpet the chocolate leather the medium saddle brown leather and then the light headliner leather for the baggage compartment so it looks super clean on top of the panel Artcraft added this nice carpet to the top and actually one of my favorite things that Artcraft did which I wasn't sure if they were going to do but they did they left cutouts for my existing GoPro mounts in the plane I was all stressed out thinking I was going to have to cut through my brand new interior to put GoPro mounts in I just didn't even think about it until the last minute and Artcraft just read my mind said we need to do this for her and they did it and I showed up on pickup day and did not have to change a thing and my GoPros fit right in and I just thought that that touch was just so thoughtful of them to include that and just think about the customer that they're making this interior for you know I am a video creator so leaving those GoPro mounts in would be a necessity and they really carried through with that I think I mentioned this when I was talking about the panel but Artcraft went and painted all of these side rails the same color tan as the panel and they also painted a lot of like the other things up at the top such as the air vents the oat gauge and then up at the top they installed the rose advisors I love the rose advisors this was a last minute Edition the Artcraft pulled through and was able to do and they are fantastic I have them in the Bonanza I had no visors in here before and I was about to suffer flying across the country staring into the Sun so I'm super glad that we were able to install those and above our head and in the back of the plane we have the beautiful headliner that Artcraft put in this is a super light tan color it coordinates super well with all of the other colors in the plane and one really Tides the whole interior together and of course I can't forget the seat I actually did get to pick the color of the seat belts when I picked the colors for everything else and I thought it would look really good if the seat belts almost Blended in with the seats and they are almost an exact match to the leather and they just look really good a huge thank you to Neil aviation art craft and flight lines for the craftsmanship and dedication they put into bringing this airplane back to life and another huge thank you to Garmin and Watt for supplying the equipment to make this airplane not only a work of art but a very capable machine I am so excited to fly this more I would go fly it right now if I weren't filming this video and I cannot wait to share my flight to Oshkosh with you if you're coming to Oshkosh I will be there the whole week with both my airplanes at the Garmin Booth so come say hi come see little ugly's transformation in person I also have several meet and greets throughout the week so go follow me on Instagram that's where I'll be posting all the information on when my meet and greets are I'm super excited because one of my meet and greets is actually at the Garmin tent with citation Max so we will be at the Garment tent at 10 30 on Wednesday but I'm going to have a ton of other meet and greets throughout the week too on Monday Tuesday and hopefully on Thursday as well so if you're going to Oshkosh and you want to say hi all the updates on when my meet and greets are going to be will be on Instagram and if you see me walking around stop me and say hi because I want to talk to all of you so I hope you all enjoyed the 140 transformation series and I hope you enjoyed flying with me to and from all of the different stops along the way so again thank you I appreciate all of you for watching my videos and I'll see you on our next flight to Oshkosh bye oh and little ugly needs a new name so any suggestions you have drop them in the comments okay bye [Music] thank you
