choosing a VR setup in 2024 is overwhelming to say the least years old contenders like Quest 2 and valve index are still very popular while nextg headsets like the big screen Beyond in quest 3 are fighting their hardest to replace them there's a wider selection than ever when it comes to full body tracking with face and eye tracking also becoming a hit in VR chat I've been using VR for years now and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have used nearly every piece of your Hardware on the market this stuff can be extremely expensive and since you guys always ask me questions about where to start or what to upgrade to I felt it was time to make my own video on the subject covering the grounds including where to start to help keep you from wasting your precious time and money so let's get started with headsets so far Quest 2 has been the ruler of VR and honestly it still Reigns King it's $300 price tag wins the title of most affordable headset as well as the most accessible seeing as you don't even need a PC to run it it is however last gen Hardware at this point so if if you're a firsttime VR user it may be your best option but if you plan on spending a larger amount of time in VR you may consider going for the newest generation Quest 3 Quest 3 only released in October and while it is more expensive at $500 it brings some considerable quality upgrades visually it's a lot better as well as massively more performant I'm not going to go too deep into specs in this video but I would say personally it's worth the extra couple hundred bucks if you're planning on spending some serious time in VR and that's after using both headsets quite a bit myself it also gives you that mixed reality functionality but since this guide is more so aimed at my VR chat audience I'm not going to factor that as anything more than just a super cool extra bonus of at least getting one of these headsets since both quests are Standalone headsets you don't need a PC to run them however if you want the best VR experience possible you can connect them via Link cable air link or the new steam link to an existing PC this is important if you are a VR chat player because Quest as mobile Hardware can not run the majority of avatars and worlds in this game but if you don't have a PC already don't worry you're still going to have a great time so don't let that get in the way of you investing in the awesomeness of VR for the last few years the valve index has reigned supremed as the VR headset of choice for enthusiasts but it's finally becoming dated hardware for $1,000 you get the headset along with two base stations and a pair of Finger track controllers for those who don't know base stations are generally required for PC VR headsets Quest is always been pretty special for the fact that it doesn't need them and you can still connect to a PC but what's awesome about Bas stations is that they open up the opportunity to use Lighthouse tracked accessories such as these valve Knuckles controllers for finger tracking in games like VR chat as well as compatibility with Vive and Tundra trackers for full body tracking if you wanted to use any of that with a quest headset you'd have to invest in two extra base stations for at least $300 just to make that possible so an index has always been the best option for VR and VR chat enthusiasts thus far but considering the advancements of the quest 3 especially in the visual Department it's gotten way harder to recommend it as a previous gen technology for the ,000 price tag especially with its reputation of breaking generally the recommendation these days is to go for a pre-owned index GameStop is offering them refurbished for 650 for the whole kit while Tundra laabs is also selling refurbished indexes with the accessories individually which still ends up being considerably better costing than buy new but of course anytime you ever buy used you're subject to the hassle of possible issues and warranties so I'd only say it this point to go for an index over Quest 3 if you decide the cost value factor is better for your specific preferences of wanting Lighthouse tracking over Standalone VR now if you've been using an index daily for the past few years like me and are ready for the next Generation headset of your dreams well the big screen behind is for you this has become my main new headset that I'm using now for $11,000 you get this tiny little headset nay VR goggles that is custom built to your eyes and face shape via a 3D scan the specs on this thing are really good too my favorite part being the OLED screens that give those deep Vivid blacks and bright colors I wish I could describe how comfortable this thing is I found it near impossible to go back to using a regular sized headset like the index after using it especially for me cuz I've got a super small face that usually gets eaten by regular hmds but the biggest setback of this little guy is the price tag 1K gets you the headset but nothing more you're still going to need to buy base stations and controllers which will likely cost you at least another $600 on top if you didn't already have them from a previous pcvr setup that's why I don't recommend it for anyone other than existing PC VR users seeing as that's a massive tank to the bank if you don't even know if you'll be using it on a daily basis but for someone like me who beves virtual reality it's well worth every penny to get a headset that literally melts away during those normally strenuous multi-hour play sessions how I only wish it had face and eye tracking which is actually kind of possible but I'm going to get to that section closer to the end of this video I also want to say that there's still VR headsets to be announced next year that will likely be aimed for pro users I'm looking at you valve index 2 but for now I can't recommend the big screen enough for those who do have the budget now before we move into the full body tracking section do you want a chance to win a free Quest 3 well then I hope I have your attention because this video's sponsor is side quest the largest content platform for Standalone vr/ mrr games with thousands of official store releases APPL games demos experimental titles game ports yeah they've kind of got it all but recently they've launched a new social VR app called banter that's kind of like if VR chat was completely physics based like bone lab leading up till Christmas they were giving away Quest threes every week to a random player who was online at the time of the drawing obviously it's the new year now but they're doing doing a bonus giveaway just for us so within 7 Days of posting this video go hang out in banter to try and win a free Quest 3 but the cool part is you don't even need side quest or VR to play banter you can download it on Steam and play in desktop mode as well you've got options links are of course in the description box below including the Discord with more giveaway details as the top pinned comment so shout out the side quest and now let's get back to the video with headset recommendations aside it's time to talk about full body tracking starting with our Lighthouse tracking Solutions Vive and Tundra trackers which will compare to IMU tracking right afterwards Vive 3.0s are the most practical way to get into full body tracking if you've got $400 laying around for the set of three trackers they're almost always available and are great because they just work you want to believe how rare that is tentra trackers are very similar but slightly cheaper they're a smaller form factor with about 2 hours extra battery life but unfortunately often sold out I honestly use these options pretty interchange ibly myself I don't think you can go wrong either way they get a similar job done neither of these come with straps you'll have to buy those on your own but the company that makes the tendra trackers does sell these eoz premium ones that wrap around your foot which I personally love just still keep in mind if you're planning to use a quest with either of these options you're going to need base stations and possibly a whole extra tracker for your headset too so it's really not affordable option all around although it is the easiest and most reliable setup with very accurate tracking most people do use Lighthouse trackers for a reason though so keep that in mind as we move into the Imus recently IMU tracking has become a more popular option as it uses internal measurements partnered with a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection meaning you do not need Bas stations and you can use them on completely Standalone VR no linking necessary my personal favorite is slime VR my last video was all about the slimes and how they kind of blew my mind as my new favorite full body tracking solution for significantly cheaper you can even easily add on extra body parts like chest knees and elbows for cheaper than three Vibes I go way more in depth in that video so go check it out the main reason to not use slimes or IMU tracking Solutions is that it's less accurate and prone to drift over time outside of slimes because of their amazing software I have a hard time recommending IMU tracking for this reason I feel like it never ends up exactly where my physical legs are moving but that connection is one of the things that makes full body track important to me however the biggest drawback is that unless you're living in the future slime VR hasn't shipped yet after many delays all right scratch that because as I'm finishing editing this video slime VR just announced they are finally shipping to their backers that have been waiting freaking ages to get their hands on their long awaited sets I'm actually glad that I was super late on this video so that I could tell you guys that a few thousand were just sent out with more shipments rolling out in the next few months so if you've already ordered be excited it says here that new orders placed now should be shipped out out by May so if you're willing to wait just a little bit longer it's got my recommendation they're also completely open- Source Hardware and software so it's possible to build your own DIY set if you feel up to that before you make a decision though please go watch my video I promise it's well worth it regardless if you're not willing to wait for them to ship then there still are other IMU Solutions like harur X and mopi both are ready to ship to your door right away for cheaper than Vibes plus space stations but from what I've tried of them those are at quite the trade-off of the reliable tracking quality provided by lighthouses now a big drop did recently happen with Vive which is their Vive ultimate trackers these things are freaking awesome with comparable quality to Lighthouse tracking without the need for lighthouses at all it's all inside out using cameras the same way that Standalone VR headsets do you don't need a PC just a single dongle and it's smart enough to do the rest for you price is 600 for three which sucks I know but it's technically still cheaper than 35 3.0 plus b St but the catch well right now it only works with HTC 5 headsets yeah I know they say compatibility with other VR headsets is planned soon but we're not sure how long or fast that will be yet obviously the 5xr elite and focus 3 which are the compatible headsets were both not on this setup guide so let's let that speak for itself but for now I'd say keep those in mind for the next few months if you're interested in them and willing to wait finally it's time for the pro Evol Pro section the face and eye tracking it's one of the coolest newer editions to VR that I'm planning to make an entire video about hopefully after this one it's not very common yet and honestly it's a shame that newer headsets like the quest 3 and big screen Beyond don't have it if you think it's as cool as I do though well there are still some options you could go for an alternative to my main recommendations in this video such as the vario arrow for its built-in eye tracking capabilities it's pretty comparably to the big screen beyond all things considered including price-wise but I don't think it wins unless you specifically have the burning desire to need ey tracking for your use casage next you could instead of getting a Quest 2 or three get a quest Pro which comes with both face and eye tracking this is what I use for face and eye tracking and it's become my favorite Standalone headset since it provides that otherwise it's $11,000 for this Niche thing to occasionally use in VR chat where you'd otherwise be happier getting a quest 3 I would normally say you can technically add face tracking to any headset that doesn't have it already because you can buy a VI facial tracker to attach to an existing headset for $130 but apparently they're not manufacturing them anymore and the buy button is removed from their website kind of SAU but oh well I guess for adding it tracking to a headset there is a DIY solution going around called itrack VR I haven't tried it for myself yet but I plan on getting it set up with my big screen soon and we'll report back on that in the next video so don't forget to subscribe and well that's my guide to finding your perfect VR setup please keep in mind that this is my personal advice opinions and selections and some other people may be interested in Hardware that I didn't cover such as these headsets to check out listed on screen but I'm pretty confident that my list will apply to the majority of viewers out there so let me know what you plan on rocking and your own advice to the others in the comments below I'm going to be streaming on Twitch right after this video so come hang out with me and ask questions if you have any I also have a patreon for those who choose to support me in continuing to spend my time making videos like this and of course thank you to my existing patreon friend
