in terms of the best tent in the world there can be only one in my opinion that tent is a wall tent and in this video Katie and I will unbox and set up our new wall tent we camp in it in freezing cold weather for the very first time and we show you why a wall tent is the best tent option in the world I'm Kerry Katie and I'm back and we're gonna put up a wall tent Katie likes tents you like tents keaney in this episode of homestead how winter in Wisconsin is never-ending so we've decided to simply embrace it we're gonna be setting up a 10 by 12 wall tent from wall tent shop.com a wall tent is a type of tent that has four straight vertical walls it provides more Headroom than a traditional tent wall tents have been around for hundreds of years tents come in all shapes and sizes you got your pop-up tent your dome tent tunnel tent we can lull the peel it wall it for all ridge tent geodesic tent and fry deep fry stir-fry you even have tents that hang from trees and tents and hang from cliffs that's best about it but a wall tent is like no other it's like a portable tiny house you can fit it in the back of a pickup truck you can set it up anywhere it's got a stove in it a place to sleep it's like a little house that you can put anywhere and you can use it in the coldest days of winter and stay nice and cozy with the wood stove going if you want to skip ahead here are the different sections of the video coming up but we think you'll want to watch the whole thing a wall tent is not a cheap tent it's a super heavy-duty tent that you could actually live in year-round and I plan to pass down to my children wall tents are suitable as a four season tent and they can even accommodate a wood stove which is what we'll be doing with ours [Music] for our 10 by 12 wall tent will be using 15 10-foot pieces of 1-inch EMT [Music] [Music] we're going to use a sawzall with a fine-toothed metal cutting blade and an angle grinder to clean up the edges should only take a few minutes and a house with four girls I was fortunate to find any marker at all of course it had to be a breaking point but it shows up fit on camera measure twice cut once [Music] [Applause] [Music] one last thing I'm gonna do is take my angle grinder and my safety goggles and just clean up the edges a little bit they're pretty clean but there's a little bit of a burr I'm not running wire or anything through these but I don't want to cut our hands on raising like that [Music] these are for the rafters through 69 inches these are for the ridges in the eaves they're 69 and 7/8 inches so there are only seven pieces of an inch difference between the two and I'm scared that when I go up to set it up this time or maybe five years from out I'm going to mix these up because they're very close in size so I'm gonna take these the rafters I'm gonna spray-paint a little bit of red [Music] all right so we got all of our tech pulls cut these are the legs red for the roof rafters and use it for the eaves we cleaned up the edges probably took 10-15 minutes to cut all of these wasn't too bad our wall tech just arrived it came in two large boxes it's careful to open this up I've got the razor set on a super low setting so I don't cut in too deep the first goodie to open up is our fly cover fly cover is a standalone piece of material which is going to go over the top of the canvas provide some extra protection and it comes in an extra large bag which I really like and here's the guylines for the tent I couldn't believe how thick these were you could use these to climb mountains if you want to do in this goodie bag number two this blue bag we have our angle kit this is for all of the one-inch EMT we cut all of these angles the EMT simply slides into it when we build the heavy-duty frame just taking a quick look here just to check looks like it's gonna fit okay but just to be sure and it fits perfectly and this final large canvas bag holds the tent canvas itself I really appreciate the packaging here not only is it is it well packaged but it also comes with this bag it's oversized if any of you have worked with tents in the past it's always a big headache trying to get the tent canvas back into the bag it never fits this one allows plenty of room to be able to fit the canvas in when you're done using it [Music] and this next box holds the camping stove itself [Music] I got to tell you I'm super impressed with this stove it's heavy-duty but it's not too heavy it's also large which I really like some smaller stoves you end up staying up all night stoking the fire this one you can fit some nice sized logs in it plus it has the added benefit of being able to hold all of the pipe right inside of it the door has a nice gasket around it there's a spark arrestor on the inside so sparks don't come flying out of the the front vent there it's got an adjustable latch reinforced steel around the inside of it really really heavy-duty nice stove here I'm looking forward to using it so there's the chimney gonna rain cover and a spark arrestor [Music] one thing that I watched a couple YouTube video and this is the stop is really nice because the legs are extra long I think these are 18 inches long so the stove is up in a nice height where you don't have to constantly lean over to refill it put the legs on you just screw it in [Music] so we gotta burn the stove in break it in it gets all of the paint smell and stuff off of it you want to do that before you put it in the tent otherwise the canvas will retain that smell and if you go hunting or whatever you be able to smell it each stovepipe piece is a bit smaller than the other so they all slide into each other easily okay we got to cure the stove I'm using a bunch of scraps we got left over from winter way to get a good fire door and let it go for a couple hours [Music] [Music] are gone make the test [Music] [Music] and now our adventure begins as we head out deep into the woods to set up our Walter [Music] we found a perfect spot for our tents on the corner of our property we began work by clearing the snow and laying down a tarp then we laid out the red poles that were for the rafters and got the other poles in position so we could simply lift them up we put the right side of the wall up first started the canvas over the top and then once the canvas was all the way over so we could reach it we put up the left wall [Music] [Music] go over and show us your ten well how long do you think it took to set up 20 minutes maybe 15 20 minutes [Music] our plan was to leave the blue tarp down and then put another one inside however even though we cleared some of the snow away it was still pretty slippery walking on it so we decided to pull the blue tarp all together our wall tent is all set up we're running out of daylight tomorrow is going to be the first night we camp in it and it's going to be cold we've packed up our trusty Argo with burgers for dinner some firewood sleeping bags and a new cot and we're ready to camp for the night [Music] [Applause] yeah we got plenty of space inside the tent Katie and I had to do some figuring to decide where to put everything we've got two cots the table the wood stove and a couple of chairs [Music] our main priority with the Sun going down is gathering some more wood we brought a few pieces along with us but we're gonna need more it's gonna get below freezing tonight [Music] [Music] like that we're gonna eat burgers and ramen [Applause] [Music] they're both gone at the same time yeah it's about there that's a good thing honey burgers too [Music] [Applause] I think I put a little too much butter in there those are water coming [Music] okay burgers are dead warming up the what do we wear Matt with the Sun out earlier the temperature wasn't too bad but it dropped quickly this stove though puts out a lot of heat I was really impressed [Music] that's good so I cooked the burgers for dinner and Katie cook s'mores for dessert another nice thing with the wall tent was the peace and quiet there's so many little things buzzing and humming when you live in a regular house with the furnace going refrigerator running there was none of that here only the sounds of nature [Applause] about an hour after going to bed we heard a pack of coyotes not too far away it was pretty cool at least I thought so [Music] the purpose and definition of a tent is to provide shelter a wall tent not only provides shelter it also provides heat and a place to cook and you don't have to crawl around on the ground you can stand up like you would in a real house in terms of my review for my tent from wall tent shop comm one word comes to mind quality everything that came included with the tent from the zipper to the velcro to the stitching even the bag it came in with super high quality sturdy durable you could tell they put a lot of pride into their product his craftsmanship I love the stove as well it was very well thought out there's plenty of space for larger logs you don't have to constantly restock it the pipes are easy to put together and everything stores easily inside it when not similar to the canvas the guidelines that come with the tent are also super heavy-duty and probably way thicker than needed this tent will truly last a lifetime if it is well cared for so what's next for our wall tent well Jenn and the girls are gonna camp in it next and the summer I'm planning on building a permanent deck to place the tent on the plan to use the tent several times this summer and I'm really looking forward to using it next winter with more videos to come Katie what was the coolest part about sleeping in the wall tent here in the coyotes yeah peril points right to the either way on this chart if you don't know the word we can stop make a change this time we okay to another day [Music]
