had a kind of a little problem child here but potentially could be a really nice turning this a piece of English Walnut you can see it has some really nice Heartwood I got this about four years ago a friends of ours had to have the tree cut down because it was infested with bugs and it was dying well I've got a really odd shape here and I've got a big old crack there it's 10 and 1 12 this this way it's I think about 12 and it's almost 15 I'm going to take it to the band saw start cutting a few things away especially the big cracks and if I have anything left I'll come back and we'll get it mounted up this will be the bottom so I'll have to get the worm screw on this end here so hopefully I see you back at the lathe here pretty soon well I think you can see I have it mounted on the lathe it's on a worm screw I look for the really bad cracks this is some of them and uh right here I started cutting those away and then I decided to make a circle on there kind of cut close to that so right now I'm just going to round this up and check those cracks out and decide where we can go from there I'm going to start with a 5/8 B gouge about I think we got about 650 RPM so let me get set up and we'll do that about 630 RPM [Music] is all right that's was pretty flat this way but this way not so much this holds together it's going to be really pretty uh start cutting some of this away that's definitely would be too wide for a bowl if we can turn that up a little bit not a lot 700 or [Music] so wow this is what I knew was going to be nice why I really want to turn this that is beautiful the Trick's going to be what I can do with the top that will go with the bottom kind of got an idea so I'm going to stop here for now and I'm going to go up to the top even though I have an abundance of wood up here I'm going to start shaping that over [Applause] [Applause] well I'm actually pretty happy with it even though wow I think it's going to work I think all right it's time to go sit down and have some lunch probably will get back a little bit later so before I went in for lunch I stopped and I was looking over the cracks we had most of them were almost turned away and I thought if I could get them small enough I'll be able to patch it with sawest and Shack so I took another cut across there you didn't see that it's nice and smooth I like the shape I'll show you exactly how I do that find my sandpaper so I'll take some shellac this is sanding sealer I'll put it on here then I'll just sand until I get a slurry now the advantage to this if you try to put CA in there it's going to stain the wood and you're probably not going to be able to sand it off you're going to have to turn it off and I don't want to do that so that's how I patched a couple here and you can't even hardly see them so I think it's looking good so I'm going to grab my face shield and flatten this off not sure if I'll probably use a Tenon and uh see if I want to reduce that size or not so I'll be right back I'm going to switch to my half2 in Bowl gouge doing about 670 RPM [Music] [Music] I'm going to go ahead and cut a Tenon on here have a look at it I've got it marked over here for these Jaws which I can put a much bigger recess in there I'm going to cut the Tenon first and then the side just kind of not sure okay I don't like it this is got a lot of bulk to it we're going to cut a recess for that other set of Jaws is well I think you can see I've got it flipped around this is a section that I band saw off it was much taller this has got some uh worm tracks and well maybe a little rot here I'm going to start by turnning turning some of this away and start blending down to here and see what it looks like I'm kind of liking the shape I have here just coming up to somewhere in there not sure that's what the gou is for all right let me grab my gear and we'll get going and we'll go ahead and use the tail stock support let's go with the 5/8 bull gouge see what kind of RPM we have that's 675 we're going to get rid of this and uh time for me to take a break for the rest of the [Music] [Music] day so I'll see you tomorrow morning okay okay well it is the next morning just finished my second cup of coffee figured it's time to come out and work on this looking at this area here last night I don't like it I made myself a note angle it back that way so I'm going to do that and then we'll start hollowing it out so you might hear my little heater going it's always away so it shouldn't be too noisy start with my/ in Bow gouge and get this uh cleaned up doing about 740 [Music] RPM going to do a little bit of cutting with the tail stock support but I'm sure that won't be there for for very long switching to the 5/8 bull go [Music] [Music] I'm going to use this little hollowing tool just to see if I actually want to do it that way it's got to be pretty close oh yeah I have a recess in there and it it goes down a ways so we're looking about 516 on that bottom just got to clean things up here and I think uh we can start sanding well just other than that little nub right there I think we have it I think I'll go over it with a negative Brak scraper all right it's time to sand I'm going to start with 80 grit using a 2-in disc and I'll have the lthe running forward for the inside then I'll switch have it going backwards we'll sand outside so I'm going to do that working up through the Grits to 400 and then I'll come back and we'll choose the Finish to put on this all right time for the first coat of finish I thought about this for a while I'm using Min wax wipe on poly this is what it looks like comes straight out of the can it's fairly thin dries pretty fast easy to wipe on that's why I like it and this is how I do it I didn't read the instructions on how to do it because this is how I like to put finishes on but look at that I think it's uh pretty good choice for this piece of wood we go ahead and get all the way around and all the other coats will look exactly like this the last one will go on and it'll be fairly shiny when we're done I may or may not have to lightly sand this or hit it with Scotch bright it it all depends on the wood so that's that's how I do it and I I think it's really going to be pretty I'm not going to show the inside it'll look exactly like that and my hand would be blocking most of it anyways so let me get all the finish on we'll come back and we I might dress up that tennon I came out here to clean this up I got a tickle in my throat I'm going to cut this away I'll tell you what's going on while it's being cut I have the live Center holding the Bowl against a 12-in diameter MDF disc with some of the padded shelf material right now I'm just blending it in giving it a little nicer look using sheets of paper here I'll sand it up to 400 I'll get it off chisel that nub off and I'll get two or three coats of the wipe on Poly on there and you should be able to see it tomorrow well this piece was not without issues but I have really been wanting to turn it mainly because as it laid under my shed I could see beautiful Heartwood every time I walk by as it turns out I think it looks pretty cool especially the contrast between that Heartwood and the sapwood I think it looks great there's the inside it's got a nice dark line separ ating the Heartwood and sapwood it's just really got some nice grain finished 9 and 1/2 in in diameter 3 and 1/2 in tall the walls are 38 of an inch and it's a/4 inch here on the base raised up a little bit more right there for it to sit on I used three coats of the Minwax white P poly and then I went over it with the white Scotch bright and I used the axe polish and restoring paste just to buff it out left a really nice finish so I'm really happy I finally got around to turning this piece and I hope you enjoyed the video if you did like the video do me a favor click that like button and feel free to leave a comment both of those
