[Applause] I have here what I think is going to be a beautiful piece of black walnut you can't tell so much from here and you can't tell so much from this end but you sure can hear this is really going to be a nice piece of wood and look at the end oh that Heart Wood just goes clear down there so this is going to be nice I'm gonna turn this for some friends we want to give them a bowl I'm going to get a hole in it for a worm screw maybe cut the corners off and I'll be right back we'll have it mounted up in the lathe the piece is about 11 inches this way a little bit more across here but I have the bark there and it's around five inches thick got the live Center against it we're turning about 600 RPM and I just sharpened my 5 8 Bowl gouge so I'm going to grab my face shield and we'll just start rounding this up [Applause] [Music] [Music] yeah I've cut nice that was worth a half inch that is looking pretty cool oh my I'll be able to clean this up plus I think I like the base slightly smaller than that so let's just see how much of this we need to take off uh almost 700 RPM [Music] foreign like to be able to make a nice cut up through here and clean it up a little bit because I do have tool marks but as always the Cable stock is in the way I think it's going to go anywhere and it should run pretty true without support taking light Cuts this will be much much easier to do okay I can get in there and get a nice little angle here it should be able to go up and around just this so that it works for both sides here the lower side and then that upper side see if I get a few more RPM almost 700. [Music] foreign certainly sandable let's get this finished off right now okay that should do it I think what I'll do is hit this with some 80 grit and finish the rest of the sanding after it's flipped around and cut out because it is got a little bit of moisture in there and it doesn't feel real wet but I can see some I'm actually going to sand this with the lathe going in reverse just going to use sheets of paper all right I just may finish standing it up and then get it flipped around but I'll get back on turning the inside tomorrow well it is the next morning it's Wednesday morning February 22nd the only reason I mention that is it's actually snowing right now and they predicted this for the 22nd and it's snowing how about that I wonder if it might be snowing up there at Shady Acres probably is I've got my 5 8 Bowl gouge we're turning about 700 RPM we're just going to hollow it out and follow the outside shape so this should be fairly easy foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] looking good [Music] we're looking at the outside I'm almost to the point where it changes so I'll have to start going that way towards the center otherwise I'll cut right through it we don't want to do that yeah that's kind of dark in there with that wood I think I'll put a light on it all right that's pretty consistent and I think I'll see if I can do a little sheer scraping before I cut the rest of this out this is still a good sized wall so it should do it easily so I just stopped so I could measure this and I've got my little homemade depth gauge just a 3 8 dowel a whole drill in here so it's come in a friction fit and I can just move this in and out I set it right here and I'm looking about 3 8 to the very bottom if I hold it up here I've got a maybe an inch and a quarter so that's how much I have to take off right here I need to continue this angle down and have that bottom meet at that same level and then we shouldn't have a hole in the bottom that's the plan going back to the 5 8 Bowl gouge and we'll just fog some of this away [Applause] [Applause] probably better check it [Applause] still got about a 16th [Music] and I could still take some more off of here and I will might need to use these to see where we're at oh quarter inch right there just a little heavy here and uh yeah just about right so we're gonna take some more of this out down into here and I think we have it and that will use the 5 8 for that you know what I'm going to sharpen it up so we can get a nice cut all right this is nice and sharp now let's see if we can get a few more RPM we should be able to almost a thousand [Applause] that's pretty close get a better Dimension like this I think we can get well I think I'm going to count on my other one because I can't reach the center with this so it's pretty smooth I could probably sand it out but I think I'll go over it with the negative brake scraper from here down [Music] foreign [Music] so I'm not going to sand it right now I have to go in and make a dry rub even though it's snowing today tomorrow I plan on smoking a pork shoulder and I want to get the rub ready and get it on the pork so I'll be back and we'll sand this up I showed some of the sanding on the outside and I thought well I won't show you the sanding on the inside sanding can tend to be boring so I sanded the inside already with 80 grit and then I started thinking about it you know one of the most important things to get a nice finish on your work and have it really look good is the sanding you've really got to do a nice job of sanding if you want a really nice finish so I'll go ahead and show you some of this and I'm at 120 grit right now also the speed is somewhat important and it's based on the diameter I'm doing about 400 RPM on it right now going forward so I've got my dust collector ready to go and my overhead filtration unit we'll get them going I'll show you some of the sanding and then when I come back it'll be time to put a finish on it [Music] while watching this I noticed my dust collector wasn't pulling the wall of that dust in there it was pulling a little bit not much a couple days after this I went to use my jointer and I noticed that the blast gate was open on it so I was losing a lot of suction [Music] on it and I decided to use the Minwax water-based Sandy sealer and polycrylic I'm going to get a coat of this on it'll all look exactly the same it's 27 degrees right now so when I do it the next time I'll just get it on and get back in the house but I think this will still dry fairly quick it always does so I'm counting on it even at 27 degrees to dry but I don't know if you can see the colors right now with this just because of the first coat is somewhat milky looking but oh boy this is really nice right there you're gonna like that when I get it finished up now you can see it just a lot of chatoins right there okay that is all the finishing I'm going to show because literally it is exactly like this put it on get it soaked in on the first coat and sometimes I even turn the lathe on slow and running across like that getting it down in the grain okay I think that's gonna do it all right I'll see you when it's all finished up and then we'll just have the Tenon to take off well it's time to remove the Tenon and I've got the lathe going about 600 RPM with a half inch Bowl gouge thank you okay I'll get this sandered up and signed and I'll be back and we'll take a closer look at this well I knew that this piece of wood had some beautiful grain in it and I was not wrong about that look at the Grain in here I could just tell looking at that when it was a log and it was going to be great it's just spectacular bottom looks great that contrast with the sapwood and the Heartwood I think it looks great you can see a little bit of the Heartwood trying to sneak through here it finished nine and a quarter inches in diameter it's three inches tall and the walls are one quarter of an inch I used Minwax water-based Sandy sealer and Minwax polycrylic for the finish and then I went over it with X abrasive paste and polish so that Minwax product dries really fast even in cold weather because when I was putting this on it was in the 20s but it's still dried pretty fast fortunately today we're in the 40s and I think the warm weather is coming back at least I sure hope it does so this was a real joy to turn and I hope you enjoyed the video so that's about it and don't forget to leave a comment and hit the Thumbs Up Button subscribe if you're not and if you are thank you very much also make sure you watch the pictures coming up next so until the next time see you later [Music]
