we've been breeding heifers for about 20 years and we've been utilizing the AI for the past 10 years and that's dude and to the two factors of the cost of bulls now and the added premiums that we feel for assistance with artificial insemination or AI projects some of the our customers they require that we come in and do a complete AI service from start to finish for instance we might come in and put the Cedars in give all the shots as well as finish it up with professional AI technicians some of our other customers they might want to be involved a little more in the project and help they might put the Cedars in give the shots set them up and then we bring the technicians out and just do the final reading service some of the other programs we can do with a custom shoot side services actually doing heat detection programs and this project here we're doing an AI synchronization and heat detection in breeding AM PMS on those heifers my name is Morgan Jon's rude I'm the area sales manager for genex in the western United States and we're here at Riverside Ranch today and were ultrasounding heifers that we bred 30 days ago and what we're doing today is we're all true sounding for pregnancy and what heifers are open we'll end up getting luteal ice and an astro tech patch and we'll begin heat detecting and breeding on those heifers for the next three days we've been breeding heifers for about 20 years and we've been utilizing ai for the past ten years and over the past two years we've gone to a to a double-a ice where we're synchronizing our first round our first breeding dates and reading those heifers AI we're going out 28 to 32 days later and we're eltra sounding and open heifers are resynchronized and we're utilizing a second round of AI and that's dude - the two factors of the cost of bulls now and the added premiums that we feel we get when we're marketing our heifers with an AI calf when we're when we're choosing a bull - AI heifers - we're looking for a bull that that has extremely high accuracy for calving knees as well as as well as a bullet has balanced multi traits as far as growth EPDs and and balanced carcass traits as well but our main our main selection criteria point is is definitely the calving is we want our customers to to have live calves and healthy calves and vigorous calves when the heifers are calving we've been very pleased with the service that that we've gotten from the gen-x team we're we're synchronized in different groups that have furs at different locations and our rep Morgana's has assembled an awesome group of people that that we really trust and we try to be pretty hands-on with with our synchronization ourselves to make sure that things are done the way that that we feel they need to be done but a lot of the times we just can't get everywhere and and Morgan and Clint and Andy have just been outstanding and being able to handle things when we're not there and we totally trust everything that they do one of the biggest concerns when ranchers consider artificial insemination is the increased cost of estrin a-- synchronization and AI does estrus synchronization and AI actually increase the cost of getting a cow pregnant factors that impact the cost of pregnancy for natural service include purchase price of the bull number of cows that the bull will breed number of years of service from that bull resulting pregnancy rate maintenance and care of the bull cost per pregnancy for artificial insemination include estrus synchronous and drugs cost of labor per cow cost of semen which is highly variable and the conception rate which has its own variability regardless of whether a Stockman uses natural service or AI there are significant cost to producing a pregnancy some would say that the expenses associated with using estrus synchronization and AI compared to natural service is not a big a difference as one might think I have quite a few customers at AI their first calf heifer their heifers and we'd like doing it because we get a superior product we know they're going to calves easy and we know we can market those calves we try to follow up with clean up bulls with the same genetics if we can but the ia the AI calf gives the Rancher options usually gives them about 50 pounds more on that AI calf known cavi knees and if they want to keep that heifer calf for replacement heifers they can do it the good thing about this is we work with a lot of herds large and small that utilize AI a lot of buyers that we hear when we talk to folks that they want known genetics and that's where Gen X comes in and can provide that for the customers you know and then on superior side of things you know they can get help us network with some of their customers that are considering utilizing AI or have utilized AI in the past so I'm excited about working with Jim Davis and Trent Stewart and the rest of the superior reps we have available in our area both single breeding boxes that we can bring out to a ranch they give us the flexibility of putting them into places that are hard to get the double breeding barns into sometimes we can just unhook them from the truck and two people can wheel them in put them in a tight place we also have the double breeding barns for some of the larger projects where we may bring in two or more technicians we can breed up to 90 head of cows or half in an hour's time period pretty efficiently the relationship between gen-x and superior is going to be very beneficial for our customers simply because of the performance alone and whether it's in writing that they aged a heifer retention now and to have a consistent product that it's not only consistent but something that's reliable and that you can buy with conviction now not every cow fits every ranch but that's why you have selection and gen-x works very very hard at having a bull battery that will fit any maternal program and then will in turn go on and perform a stocker cattle or perform in the feedlot and then perform on the rail and and every link in the chain so to speak repeatedly successful chute side service basically defines the fact that genex gets in large operations everybody's busy if we can come in with a suit side operation where we can be there for six to twelve hours and breed three to four hundred cows and that timeframe allows those ranchers to effectively take their labor force and put it into one area for those a lot in the amount of times and then they can be doing their other daily activities again it's the quality of the personnel I mean it's a working relationship it's just not a one-day service and they're here and they're gone it's an ongoing relationship you build over time we've been doing this for four years and every year seems to get more knowledge about what we're doing and what services they can provide and this really worked out well for cattlemen across the nation feel it's hard to beat the combination
