best thing about that is you meet so many different people from all over the country at the willow oak sale and you know what you hear how a lot of them run on an animal unit on 1 to 3 acres and here it's between 16 and 18 acres and you know what so it takes a lot more bull power in the Dakotas in Montana I guess that as to you know we did they just got a cover more ground more range and you know during this time they've arrived at a highly developed program that has proven itself quite well in beef production bottom line genetics for profit minded producers this is what willow okie angus is all about they haven't chased fads in breeding that is commonly seen in the beef industry they've held to their course that is focused on performance muscling quality grade and carcass weight Richard Arnold wants cattle that work for commercial cattlemen particular attention is paid to the fundamentals of actual data such as structural soundness temperament and conformation philosophy willow oak is to develop bulls that will help commercial cattlemen make a living we have done everything we can to locate the characteristics that we think are the ones that are needed by our customers to make a living and people are either in one to one or two categories they are either in the category of people who retain either somewhat ownership or partial ownership of their cattle or they are people that are classic cow calf operators who sell their calves some in a short period of time after weaning both of them have the same common characteristics of needing animals that produce red meat and will weigh and then the people who retain ownership need a third factor which is the feed efficiency so we use those characteristics to try to help our customers get to the profit drivers in the cattle business which are feed efficiency weight and muscle composition the cycle of production at Willow cattle ranch begins on the ranch in Rogersville Tennessee the rolling pastures there are good Grass country was abundant water and shade these seed stock cattle are well managed and are handled in a manner as they would be on a commercial ranch the cattle are not halter broke and treated as show cattle the cows are raised on grass and hay with mineral supplementation while young bulls are being developed by aged and contemporary group having identified angus hybrid cattle as their target the willow oak program began years ago with the selection of top angus genetics and crossing it with Chianina cattle the bull that we have produced and the bull that we sell in this cell every year he's going to be sound structurally he's going to have be full of red and long lean red meat he is going to be sound headed and level-headedness temperament he is going to calves easy and the bull is going to be long-lived he will last as about as long as you can use him in your in your herd he's going to be we think the best ball you can find that we have always started with structure and move forward into our evaluation of cattle because if they're not structurally sound all these things come into play one of the things that we've been hearing over the last few years is that we're in let me just say it right away we embrace all this data data is an important part of the cattle beef industry the EP DS the actual data the feed tests the sonogram data all that stuff is critically important and we do it but we've been hearing for the last few years from some commercial men that one of the things that has bothered them it seems that the industry has gone the commercial industry is going to bull producing seed stock to business has gone so far after data that they've forgotten about the commercial Rancher and that these Bulls actually have to go out and live on ranches and that there's a number of characteristics that they notice seem to be sliding away a little bit and these are what we call practical traits Jarett mayor raises cattle on the northern plains near morristown south dakota's which is just across the border from north dakota it's rough big country with harsh winters cattle must have the ability to travel to make it on this range jared has gradually converted his bull battery over to willow oak ki Angus and hasn't looked back started watching the sale in 2005 and watched a lot of what was going on with the genetics and what willow oak was doing in terms of feed efficiency and the longevity of the Bulls and I talked to John Coble and Richard Arnold a lot and I watched him for two years and then I flew down the sale and I was really impressed with the set of bulls they had on hand and so that year I bought 12 of their Bulls brought him home and had really good luck with the way they were going coming out as far as Cavan and staying together and holding together and the conception and the following year I went 100% into Willow bulls and up to date there's 30 Bulls on the ranch and there's not one of them that does any other sire besides Willow Oaks sires Jarrett mayor and his family are the fourth generation on the ranch the whole family takes part in the operation and the kids are learning the cattle business out on the Dakota Plains the biggest characteristic of the willow oak genetics is by far temperament of the Bulls and maternal traits on the cows you know we've been buying the Bulls for the last four to five years and we've been buying some of the replacement heifers and so far the maternal traits on the heifers and the replacement heifers that we've been keeping out of our own cows has been spectacular you know and the the Bulls temperament is great you know the the old ki breed had kind of a disposition and a temperament problem and willow oak has paid real close attention to keeping that out and very selective on their bulls when people come and look at our cattle there's one of the first things they notice is how structurally sound they are how correct they are how well they walk and move and how athletic they are we have the performance traits and the practical traits and one of the practical traits of course is temperament it's tied in utter soundness longevity potential the fertility those are all hoof soundness leg soundness all those things you think that a practical traits they all kind of fit together for an animal to be practically useful and so we the reason we've done these evaluations we want to send a message to our customers that these are important things for us we know they're important to him and we're take the time to make sure that we've evaluated these animals based on those on all of those traits willow continues to thoroughly shape their cattle through both index and actual data measurements the cat will work well at all stages of beef production and give ranchers of vigorous package of performance and efficiency will continue the keying a story when we return you're watching the American Rancher stay with us established in 1987 superior livestock option is now the largest cattle marketing network in North America we can video option is called by world champion auctioneers along with superiors online click to bid puts thousands of qualified buyers in front of your production or commercial cattle my grandfather used to put them on a stock car and go to Sioux City Iowa now we have a world wide web you can watch it in internet or TV that slangs our loop out a whole lot further than just Texas our cattle get a little further away than just Central Oregon or this Northern California country our customers have a way to purchase bulls without having to physically be at the sale they open up a whole new world of buyers that can look at your cattle that network of people is so huge that creates a perfect venue different people buying them that competitive deal is kind of tough to be they're seen by probably pretty much every person buying cattle in the u.s. they pretty much established the price seems like superior is always kind of the trend setter year after year producers across the nation trust their bottom line - superior livestock auction we are very skeptical but again laughing but it's worked out great for us they have done such an extraordinary job in helping us market our program throughout the United States no matter the location of your operation superior livestock auctions can lose your cattle for top dollar to go through superior we were able to go back east with the cattle where before we didn't have that option here several hundred thousand dollars ahead of where we would be if we did have the period that's why we've been doing it for twenty years we've had really good at French Lick on my desk after ten years if we hadn't we wouldn't be listening we're building relationships you can build your big call or go online to learn more about marketing your cattle the superior way I mean if it ain't broke don't fix it [Music] International genetic solutions feeder profit calculator what is it simply put it's a tool to assist in determining feeder calf value of the largest genetic group within the industry and that's the crossbred feeder calf the feeder profit calculator incorporates genetic knowledge of mainstream sires regardless of the breed preconditioning and vaccination information weaning management and responsible health programs to evaluate the value on a set of calves the finished product is a certificate that highlights the genetic and management predictions on those calves along with certain carcass and growth traits producers have three things to sell when it comes to their feeder calves and that's genetics health and the management those cattle are under the feeder profit calculator wraps all this information together but the cost can a rancher even afford it how about this it costs nothing head the International genetic solutions.com you can either know or guess choose no international genetic solutions feeder profit calculator [Music] welcome back to the American Rancher will oh okay Angus cattle continue to gain the attention of today's cattlemen through their performance Stockman have seen these cattle prove themselves in the feed yard over and over the willow oak program has been thoroughly shaped over time this has been done primarily through following the feedlot performance records of their genetics and keeping up with the results of their customers with this information they in turn work these findings back into their production cycle for positive impact Decatur County feed yard outside Oberlin Kansas is one of America's most progressive cattle feeding operations with customers from Texas to North Dakota to Florida and as far as Hawaii the facility offers Stockman some of the fullest and most detailed profiling in the cattle feeding industry dan Dorn oversees supply development Decatur is a commercial 40,000 head feed yard that specializes the retained ownership direct from the ranch Decatur is the only feed yard in the country that individually manages the customers cast through the feeding process meaning we individually weigh frame score ultrasound for back fat on arrival and about two-thirds the way through the feeding process weary measure and identify the rate of change in an individual animal once the system has calculated the rate of change and identified an opto endpoint the animal is sorted into out congroo or harvest groups once an animal's harvested we report to the producer the value of the end carcass trips then once all the producers cattle are harvested and we generate a unique closeout including summary of the group and then an individual closeout showing the profitability of an individual calf and most importantly net return to the ranch we've always talked about profit drivers feed efficiency being number one in fact conversion drives 43% of the profitability carcass merit or grid value drives 39% of the profitability in a group and carcass weight drives the remaining profitability over the past five years Decatur County has logged closeout records on some 200,000 head of cattle Dan Dorn knows the performance of Willow Oaks sired cattle from an assortment of customers the cattle hit all the profit drivers they gain they're efficient and they hang up a really nice carcass I went back and pulled the willow groups out of the database and they consistently ranked in the top 30 percent of all the profit drivers the average rate returned to Ranch on today's fed cattle market for the willow oaks tired cattle is nine hundred twenty seven dollars a head or forty two dollars a head over the meat remember we're comparing against two hundred thousand head fed here in the last five years they're efficient they have yield and grade and they grow or simply put they work our cattle tend to grade well 85 to 88 percent choice is the useful return on it our cattle yield well we don't have yield grade fours and fives we have some threes mostly twos and ones we've had cattle that have actually graded prime customers that had counted a graded crime with yield grade one carcasses at Decatur County overall we'll awoke customers have done quite well at beef derbies and carcass contests Willow Oaks sired cattle have been documented to average more than 87% choice yield out almost 67 percent and factor an adjusted net return of more than a hundred and thirty dollars per head in carcass competition in recent years business of willow is to produce commercial bulls that go out and help people make a profit in the cattle business outside Lubbock Texas near the community of Slayton Dale kitchens has transformed the weaning weights of his cow calf operation over the past few years using willow oak bulls but stout calves are not the only benefit he's experienced we started using will Oaks Bulls back in 2008 I've been in the cow calf operation since 2000 we started off as a stocker cattle operation in 1990 and after 10 years switched to cow calf and originally was running straight Angus and a little disappointed in waning White's and of course we're running mainly a cross Red Angus lemmie crossed cows under these willow oaks bulls and like that combination better than anything we have come up with so far Dale is planning on restocking after a tough period of drought he says he'll be using more willow oak Bulls in his operation I would recommend well Oaks bulls mainly because number one they are excellent beef producers several bulls we bought had a five pound daily gain which to me was unheard of when their calves hit the ground they took off they look like almost like greyhounds when they're little in and they just blew up like balloons and and we had some of the heaviest weaned calves that we had ever had on this cattle operation secondly is the handling qualities of those bulls they are just super handlers they come off the truck every bull that we have worked with just didn't give us a problem handled very well just amazing and then of course third they've covered their herd very well they've just been super aggressive and working the cows and we've just been happy with the with the quality of bulls from every aspect of what we were willing to buy a bull for we've had a couple of customers that had had some some issues with some other Bulls from a different breed and they bought our bulls and and they had a real increase in their conception rate and these are cattle run and open range and white wide out and they found that our Bulls tend to go find themselves a group of cows and and kind of handle them and make sure they get bread instead of the Bulls grouping and kind of you know not not go not sticking with the cows as closely as they should throughout the development of their herd willow oak cattle ranches employed traditional selection methods for breeding conformation temperament performance and genetic markers history has taught them the only method to ensure preservation of the individual improvement is line breeding to narrow the genetic base thereby improving the chance of offspring improvement willow oak has tested the herd sires and donor cows for scientific reassurance of what their closely monitored breeding program already told them that willow oak bred cattle are free of all known genetic recessive defects and can be used with confidence in any commercial herd in America one of the common misconceptions in the cattle business is that cavy knees has to do with weight and now the weight is a factor but the the the cabbie knees and this is our calves eni's ball here we've had over 100 calves out of him all out of efforts all unassisted he is he is he has met exactly the expectations we had and what makes him and what sets him out is his ability to walk and move and how much flexibility has in his joint it is the flexibility of those joints and the athleticism of these Bulls that make them calves in each ball well willow people are the only ones that I know of that guarantee attitude every bullets from anyone else a guaranteed attitude and they guarantee these bulls will handle well and I thought when I first heard that I thought I'd it's probably not true but boy those Bulls came off the truck and it was just amazing how tame and docile they were and they handled the easy and they worked well and just very impressed with that willow oak will be offering the tremendous set of bulls on February 9th 2019 the cell will be on smart auctions and you can find out more they're smart auctions calm smart auctions is a timed auction on the go allowing cattle producers to bid and buy securely from the convenience of their smartphone tablet or PC you can view select bid buy and pay for on a secure and reliable way you know I think they really got a good thing going they really are key on their maternal traits their feed efficiency and in this business that's probably the two biggest key points that there is and what the data that they got in the direction they're headed I think they really got their Bulls put together and offer probably the best set of bulls there is on on the market today what we hear is as the data has been emphasized there's been a trend toward the animals that have been that come from that day to not have as much emphasis on those practical traits now the only other hand if you're paying then with the kind of prices you have to pay for bulls this day you want them to stay until you're through with them as opposed to them without you having to be through with them because they can't stay Richard Arnold has thoroughly enjoyed the first 30 years of willow oak cattle ranch the key Angus cattle they have developed and the numerous ranchers and Stockman they've come to know and work with over time in the beef industry I enjoy selling bulls to people I enjoy talking to them over the phone but I really enjoy getting an opportunity to show on these cattle and these balls here at the day of the sale [Music] we hope you enjoyed our visit with willow oak cattle ranch to find out more about us visit our website the American rancher calm or check us out on Facebook we'd love to hear from you for
