Source 2 it's like Source but better in almost every way it doesn't use file types that absolutely nobody on Earth would want to use and it has things like material rendering that isn't from 2005 csgo is the first game of valves that I actually care about to get the source 2 treatment receiving a massive visual upgrade that really just kind of resulted in it being eight times the size of my hard drive and after this engine Port the question on almost nobody's mind is what about Team Fortress 2 what about Team Fortress 2 am I right no but seriously the prospect of a source 2 Team Fortress 2 or a Team Fortress Source 2 or stalking single dads at the park is a tantalizing offer if Team Fortress 2 were to be ported into Source 2 it would be effectively an entire remake of the game offering all of the advantages of a brand new engine that we could get and in fact some fans have already taken it upon themselves to try and recreate Team Fortress 2 in a version of the new engine because Gmod is as close as we're going to get to a source 2 SDK thanks valve I'm glad you suck now but there is is a question would Team Fortress 2 actually benefit from a source 2 upgrade now as somebody who has almost no coding experience and literally zero experience with the source SDK or with Source 2 in basically any capacity Beyond playing CS goo one time I am highly qualified to give basically meaningless conjecture about this topic also the owner of the gray 2009 Honda Accord you left your lights on what are the actual advantages of a potential source to upgrade what do we stand to gain what do we stand to lose am I finally out of ideas for videos let's find out first off is the obvious as a narcissistic liar I can basically confirm that if Team Fortress 2 were to get a source to upgrade we would all receive $30,000 and also there is the major and most obvious change in that Team Fortress 2 would receive a [Music] heavy basically transformative visual upgrade however this is somewhat of a weird topic for Team Fortress 2 because Team Fortress 2 is not a game that is trying to be photorealistic in any capacity the major graphical advantages of source 2 over Source One are how it renders material and how it does lighting one of the biggest things Source 2 brings in over Source One is PBR materials for those of you who don't know what that is and I don't blame you that stands for peanut butter reli type and also in some circles photob based realism a lot of you might be familiar with Textures in video games it's basically this thing that we wrap around the geometry of a model to make it look like something that isn't just a gray blob back in ye olden times you would just have your model you would unwrap it which is basically turning your 3D surface into a 2D image you can paint on and then you would apply a texture to it and that was pretty much it and you could slap anything you wanted on there wood sand dirt last frame before the body cam turns off anything but these days texturing is no longer just a one image thing games now utilize multiple different versions of the same image to create a material this includes data on what parts of the material should be metallic and shiny what part should be rough and dull what part should bump out and have crevices and little divots for the light to bounce off of what part should literally deform the model changing its geometry and which part part should smell this creates an incredibly realistic image you can see it most effectively with Metals Metals in games used to be kind of Hackney or just looked sort of dull and plasticky these days they can do things like reflect light reflect surfaces around them and just in general look more metallic using this series of images you can basically assign different surfaces different ways to react with a lighting engine making an object look much more realistic however and I don't know if any of you have noticed this anytime soon but somebody left the oven on overnight and now the video's on fire and also Team Fortress 2 isn't trying to be realistic in any way thank God but it isn't just that Team Fortress 2 looks stylized so it doesn't benefit from these new technologies because there are a lot of games that are heavily stylized and still use a PBR workflow to create really good results like sea of Thieves too bad that game sucks but it does prove that your game doesn't have to look like something a Neo school shooter would masturbate over to benefit from this new technology however as it stands it would require a lot of work now that being said valve has $4 billion hidden around in their office somewhere probably in the same pit they push all the interns who ask if they can have a bite of Gab sandwich so saying something would require a lot of work doesn't really apply to a major entertainment Corporation and I may not know exactly how much liquid valve has but it's probably at least enough to hire a guy to go into Photoshop to prove this I have $283 to my name somebody help and I decided to make a PBR version of the blackbox in the even cheaper thing and here it is now of course this is still somewhat of a stylistic change and I could imagine some people would have reservations about it but even if we didn't do this for the game there are other things that you could do with Team Fortress 2 that would generally improve the way it looks without compromising its style for example you could give Soldier boobs or you could do what CS2 did and redo all of the weapon models now this is again probably something a little too deep for Team Fortress 2 players to fully understand unless you're one of the 19 of us that have a brain but Team Fortress 2 model don't look amazing they look fine because of the simplistic art style but compared to pretty much any other game made today they look very blocky and very low poly there nothing inherently wrong with that it's just that smoother edges look better and in addition the lighting would greatly improve a lot of people seem to have a problem with the way CS2 looked versus csgo they all said that it was too bright and too colorful cuz they've never been outside so they don't know how light works but Team Fortress 2 is already a really bright and colorful game so the bouncier more intense lighting would complement the game better than it did for csgo there are also a lot of opportunities to fix other stuff as well like upscaling some of the textures and maybe removing that weird pile of photorealistic human feces that's at the back of the Shack on upward or sniper I'll take either one there could be some concerns about the quality of upscaling these textures since they were handdrawn and after all it's pretty hard to redo a texture perfectly but with the Advent of generative AI it's actually not that bad anymore and I found that it does a pretty good job with Team Fortress 2o The Raid Trace Black Box I showed off earlier uses upscale textures and Frank frankly it looks great and of course it's extremely easy to use and extremely efficient especially when compared to actually doing this by hand anybody can do it here let me show you Chad GPT please make me an upscale version of this image that's a bomb schematic there is basically an opportunity to improve how teame Fortress 2 looks in basically every way but there is one catch to all of this to get valve to do literally anything anymore it requires a sacrifice of five versions so I'm going to need volunteers from the audience but also Team Fortress 2 players are a bunch of Zar Nicholas the second stany and as such they have no money or at least pretend to have no money after spending $100 on a hat having no money usually means the Team Fortress 2 players don't have the most powerful computers some of them not being very good at running Team Fortress 2 to begin with and while it's easy to say people should just upgrade their computers making the game unplayable for a lot of people is a genuine concern Team Fortress 2 especially has a very obnoxiously large minor population and those dumbass tax wastes can't get any jobs and can't get their own money to buy new computers if you were to upgrade Team Fortress 2 its visuals you would in turn have to upgrade its requirements making the game less accessible for a lot of people now there are some things you can do to get around this for example the game fist full of frags a game with one developer redid its entire texture set but these newer higher resolution textures were released as an optional pack which was pretty much perfect for everybody anyone who wanted the original textures just didn't download it and anybody who wanted the new ones did it was a perfect solution and frankly I kind of hope that more games start to release their higher quality settings as optional DLC since a lot of people don't often use the highest settings for a lot of different kinds of games especially multiplayer ones and reducing file sizes would be really nice however there is a way that even those people could benefit from the upgrade I don't know if anybody has noticed but Team Fortress 2 plays like dog for a game from 2007 now I'm not going to pretend to know anything about Team Fortress 2's source code because I really just don't but apparently this is something to do with how Cosmetics are all drawn draw calls which are basically when the game tells different parts of your computer hey this is is a thing I needed to appear are a part of every game however it's pretty much the fundamentals of game optimization that you should keep these as low as you can the fewer things that the computer or console has to render the faster the game goes and Team Fortress 2 added a bazillion hats and made the game slow down it also doesn't utilize modern processors very well even the lowest end processors available on the market are much more powerful than the stuff that Team Fortress 2 was designed to run on and Team Fortress 2 is simply incapable of recognizing many of these strengths or at least so I've heard don't don't you don't flame me and these optimizations would be great for the game however this more so leads into what is effectively the white whale of this entire discussion a source 2 upgrade would give valve a reason to care about Team Fortress aside from a hard drive full of combat footage this is one of the most desirable things Team Fortress 2 players could get and when you're talking about this the world is basically your oyster they could fix anything they could fix the dog weapons that barely work they could fix some of the terrible map design they could put all of the friendlies into a band saw they could fix some of the clipping they could do literally anything they wanted and I know that a lot of people say that this possibly can't happen because the Team Fortress 2 source code is just too much of a mess for anybody to work with but the thing is is that I'm fairly certain 99% of you have no idea what you're talking about cuz you've never worked with it but apparently it's not so bad that some guy on Twitter and a bunch of people on the workshop weren't capable of making a lot of fixes so I simply don't believe that it's unsalvageable and I'm not calling you all liars but I am Jokes Aside an entire overhaul of the game is pretty much the perfect opportunity for valve to fix whatever issues they have with Team Fortress 2 as well they could rewrite any parts of the code base that supposedly make the game difficult to deal with they could launch it as an exciting new product taking advantage of whatever it is they're interested in right now hell they could even change parts of the game that these days maybe don't hold up as much as we thought they did now I know this one is really dangerous for Team Fortress 2 players suggesting that they change the game play other than just by adding new weapons is like poison to Reddit but I genuinely think there are a lot of things about Team Fortress 2 that you could change or even just add that would make the game overall better I think the Reliance on medic is kind of stupid I think sniper should be changed I think spy could use a sort of an overhaul I think heavy is boring and who knows what valve could come up with no one is more capable than they are except for all of the people who are to make new additions to Team Fortress 2 that would actually be like you know good and sure you could probably fix a lot of these issues with the gameplay inside of source one but why would you working with the new engine gives you access to more convenient more exciting Technologies and workflows and while a new engine might sound like it's scary depending on how well it's done it's really not that bad of a transition I've seen some people online say that such a move would ruin things like the movement controller and a lot of the game's bugs that we've come to know as mechanics like trimping but movement in game engines can be translated literally one for one for example there's a plugin for Unreal Engine 4 that basically 100% mimics halflife 2 movement and that's transitioning from The Source engine which in a lot of ways is basically just a grandchild of the Quake engine and Unreal Engine which is one of the only engines on the planet that is not in some way related to quake as far as FPS games go so if this transition is possible there's absolutely no reason valve couldn't basically one for one or at least as close as one for one as you could get recreate team Porters 2 hell this would even create an opportunity to Define many of the bugs we like as actual mechanics that are there intentionally meaning that it would be easier to manipulate them or balance them video games have a long and stored history of turning unintended results into game mechanics a very popular one is that in the original Street Fighter 2 animation cancelling was not actually intended to be there it was caught during development according to Legend and the developers decided to leave it in and as a result we now have cancelling in fighting games and just to say the least that has become a fundamental part of many games neutral and rewards systems you may call it important some of you might say it's even more important than the Holocaust but honestly that's a little up don't know why you say said that imagine the possibilities if we were to actually Define many of these weird little phenomenon as mechanics once you start doing that you can do a lot of other cool stuff to them like what if getting a trick stab was something the game could recognize and would give a special death animation what if flog cancelling had its own Unique Mechanics valve has done this for other games again using CS2 as an example CS has a mechanic called jump throwing this is when you jump and throw your grenade at the same time giving your grenade a lot more range doing this correctly used to be an extremely difficult thing to get consistently so a lot of people just made bind for it that did the process automatically so during the transition to CS2 valve decided to instead make this a mechanic with its own designed window of execution making it more of a matter of skill and not something you just Bound in your console meaning that everybody has access to the mechanic evenly and now it's a matter of actually being good at the game rather than just having to have some piece of knowledge and a couple of lines of commands this isn't even mentioning all of the new modding tools that Source 2 provides which are way better than the ones that Source has the newer version of hammer is vastly more efficient and makes it so that making good maps is easier and much faster one of the major concerns with Team Fortress 2 right now is that there still isn't a gun that causes your opponent's computer to overheat and also that many of the maps that have been released recently have questionable quality now this problem is actually pretty understandable I mean it's hard to get people to play test your random map unless you have a lot of resources or influence especially to get the amount of play testing you really need to make a good map Bots are of course no help they're way too good at the game to accurately represent redditors you need the authentic IC article you need a real cave dwelling Neanderthal to test your map to make sure it plays how Team Fortress 2 should being able to iterate on these Maps faster means that we can make better Maps more effectively more changes can be made in a shorter window of time making it so that maps are better once they meet the deadline and not after it but finally to close out does this conversation make anybody else kind of feel weird like you know like somebody's some's watching you like this is such a unique topic for Team Fortress 2 to care about almost any other game on Earth would would be happy to have a brand new engine and all of the improvements that could come with it only here on this tiny crusty corner of the internet is such a concept maybe negative like I'm pretty sure Bethesda fans would stab a puppy to get a new engine whereas Team Fortress two players have to scour the very depths of human consciousness to come up with excuses as to why this would not be a good thing it's such a weird phenomenon that this community is so absolutely abhor by the possibility that their game could not be perfect right now and that maybe further efforts could be made to improve it they bitched for 6 years that they didn't get updates and then they were given the tools to just make their own updates and now they're bitching about that too if you look up Source 2 on a lot of different Community sites the very notion of a source 2 Port has a lot of people very upset and they will come up with the tiniest minutia to explain why this cannot be allowed to happen like obviously these rat men don't represent the entire community and there's plenty of people who are down for a source two port or even sometimes A Team Fortress 3 but but honestly I I think it's weird that this is even a discussion not because criticizing valve is a bad idea no criticizing valve is great in fact you should go to the office they rent out with pickaxes and just start breaking windows but this is merely one in a laundry list of things Team Fortress 2 players don't want to have happen to Team Fortress 2 though personally I'm in the opposite Camp I think that something drastic is exactly what team Fortress 2 needs it either needs a complete overhaul a sequel or to become the inspiration for a next generation of games like it instead of harping over the art style or the current status of the game over and over and over again but yeah that's pretty much all I have to say on the matter Team Fortress Source 2 in my opinion as long as valve is not literally the most incompetent group of people on the planet and they're not would be fantastic make sure to join me next time where we harp on about the art style and current state of Team Fortress 2 see you
