hey everyone budgetnerd here a while ago i did a video covering network attached storage it covered just a few of the options available to share files and do more over a network link below if you want to see it as long as you have a few bucks to burn the commercial nas was one of my favorite options synology reached out to me and wanted me to check out their ds220 plus i figured it would be a good opportunity to go over a commercial nas in a bit more detail [Music] so the ds 220 plus comes in at 300 and like always let's begin by opening the box and seeing what you get wait no there's a sticker to check out it's a two-bay nas it has a 2.0 gigahertz dual-core intel celeron cpu that will burst up to 2.9 gigahertz it will support up to 32 terabytes of storage it comes with two gigabytes of ram that's expandable to six gigabytes according to synology and two lan ports allowing link aggregation hidden within the depths of this cardboard you find a power cable ethernet cable another ethernet cable the power brick and some hard drive screws the provided manual is pretty good at showing you how to physically set it up and yes this is the diskless kit you must provide your own hard drives inside here is the nas it's pretty compact and looks nice uh on accident i discovered the front cover plate comes off behind it you can see the two bays for the hard drives also inside is the ram expansion slot on the right you can see the status lights for both lans and both disks let's throw in two four terabyte seagate iron wolf nas hard drives provided by seagate and synology thanks guys installation is pretty easy put the hard drives into the tool-less caddies slide them in and they click right in place then push on the front panel once hooked up and once you press the correct button it will fire up follow the steps and the instructions to find the nas and then go through the setup the only part of the setup that you couldn't claim was easy was setting up the hard drives and creating the partitions it's not hard but if you're not at all nerdy just check the documentation having a central place to store files you wish to share or can access on multiple pcs is pretty slick a commercial nas makes setting this up and more pretty easy if you're working from home these days a setup like this can help you back up your work files or give you more space to store them while you can't go into the office of course as long as your work allows this on the main menu you can access all the built-in installed packages install new packages or applications from the package center access tons of settings from the control panel and of course view and manage the files on your nas with file station here is your status widget it gives you real-time info about your nas up here you can view notifications manage your account on the nas as well as rebooting shutting down or logging out of the nes you can also show or hide the widget you get the option to store footage from two surveillance cameras on these nasas with the surveillance station app and you can use more than two cameras if you purchase more licenses you can also use the nas as a location for backing up your files from your computers or your cell phones there are tons of things honestly you can do with an ass like this you can add all these features by visiting the package center you can see your options for backup trials or free options for antivirus install audio station which will let you manage your music stream it to your phone app and share it with your friends you can also have your nas act as a dns server an itunes server media server proxy server radius server chat server mail server ldap server vpn server web server and many more there is a pretty good list of third-party packages as well such as apache server docker perl php plex which i use a lot teamviewer wordpress and this list goes on it is quite the list but by far my favorite hosting virtual machines keep in mind if you want to run a vm on here you'll need to install more ram synology says the mac supported size is another four gigabytes added to the soldered on two gigabytes it comes with to max out at six gigabytes it's not all perfect scores with this nas the officially supported ram costs way too much i think however there have been reports of people being able to add more ram even beyond six gigabytes with other brands synology doesn't support this and you're running a risk running more than six gigabytes or a different brand but to each their own i set up a vm and the process was fairly easy the only issue i had with it was during the windows install it did have a few issues during the mini reboots but powering it off and back on seemed to snap it out of it now that it's installed it works fine you can't expect super fast vms on this particular nas but it's still super cool that it's an option transfer speeds would hit as much as 112 megabytes per second across a single ethernet cable coming from an m.2 ssd i say single because this nas has two rj45 jacks and will let you set up link aggregation while this can speed up transfer sum this doesn't necessarily mean twice as fast but it means twice as many lanes for your data that can help keep speeds where you need them if one gets saturated plus it can also be set up to act as a backup if one cable gets unplugged or goes bad or gets cut the other will continue to work to set up leak aggregation go to control panel network network interface create create bond then you can select what option you want and follow the steps to finish if you choose balance slb you don't have to have a special switch in my specific setup i didn't see much of a benefit but if i had quicker network equipment or a busier network i could have the last thing to cover is security there are some anti-virus options and you can encrypt your files that are on the nas with aes https is an option as well as the option to set up accounts and define permissions and speed limits for users and or groups well there you have it it was more or less smooth sailing with this thing it's not the fastest thing in the world but it comes with good specs for the price if you're looking for a solid choice for an entry-level nas i recommend it link below if you're interested let me know if you have questions and thanks for watching
