inside International bowling campus in Arlington Texas for what should be an outstanding contest a best of seven series between Alabama State and Southern hello everybody I'm Derek Jones along with the Hall of Famer Carolyn Doran Ballard and Carolyn as we take a look at this matchup here today this is the two best teams in the swag absolutely I mean both teams really came through in the clutch one going through the bracket one coming out of the Los bracket and it was a true Testament to the teamwork to get these teams here for Alabama State they won in yesterday meanwhile Southern with the opportunity to battle Jackson State out of the losing into the bracket and Southern survived Jackson State in a hotly contested matchup and now it's the one seed versus the two seed and how about this Baker format this is my favorite part of Collegiate bowling it is the true Testament of team teamwork the first bowler will Bowl the first and the sixth frame second bowler the second and the seventh so on and so forth it is all about team chemistry communication and making the right adjustments at the right time as we get a look at the head coach of Southern Barry Doyle the two-time swack coach of the year and he has led his team back to to the championship round Kelsey quinning Ashley Adams Jamiah Balden Nyla Wilson and Jaylen Rogers the Junior and Rogers has been Sensational Carolyn yes she has she right here this is an anchor bowler what do you want your anchor bowler to do they want to you want them to hit the pocket and make whatever they lead she was clutch in every game they bow Andrew Chapman 16th season as the head coach of the Hornets four time swack coach of the year and his lineup has been extremely effective so far oin price harrove degree and the two-time swack bowler of the year the senior Savannah Razer yes but it's l really who came through for this team she is that leadoff bowler that gets the team going she has attitude she is a player of the year she has spunk she just motivates this team to be the best they can be which makes all of the players even better the fans have been into it throughout the swack tournament and we are set to begin as Kelsey Quinny the junior out of Dallas gets that ball just a little bit right you know one of the things that the the ladies tried to do was after the strip in re oil which has just happened because of course we had a match end the lanes to them feel a little bit tighter so they started to play a little bit further right and then migrate to the track an opportunity here to pick up super an opening spare leaves one open Carolyn when you take a look here for southern they've been very busy already today this is another match for them this is unbelievable first of all she tries to make this spear just go little bit high on the head pin leaves the four pin I'm going to tell you I I I spoke to the coach and I said you know how do you bounce this quick I mean you're just getting done and now you got to bow for a championship and he said you know what we came through we needed to we're ready to go we're here to win L oin the senior delivers o has been one of the key Carolyn as you mention to this team getting going and getting back to the championship round yes and I remember when L first started I I'm telling you I remember like it was yesterday she threw the ball much slower she was a little tentative getting to the line and now she is this team's Spitfire like I said earlier she is aggressive to the line she's increased her rotation off her hand and she truly has come such a long way leaving the for pin great come back come out Ste surveying matters here to try to pick up a spare and she delivers right off the bat one of the things talking to Alabama State prior to this matchup today they said you know win or lose we are going to have fun and obviously being on The Winning Side will make things a little bit easier well and you've had some time to kind of soak it all in and understand what you've already done but you know that you still have work to do Ashley Adams opens up with seven Carolyn how about the Slick Lanes here so far in the oil pattern right here you can see she was trying to play much deeper but got that ball way way right I mean she almost hit four five down Lane you need to either move a little bit further right play a little bit straighter and then again as it breaks down you can Mig just that little bit into the track area you know with the lane pattern here it was 40 ft 24 M of oil not much to be honest in today's game 24 ml is not very much but the oil they used with curve tends to hold up yes a little bit more High friction but right here this is telling you something where an adjustment needs to be made Emily price up next for Alabama State as we get a look at the aforementioned oil pattern and it obviously differs from Lane to Lane where you go absolutely but 40 ft 24 MLS like I mentioned they use curve oil by kegle uh this oil tends to hook a little bit more it does blend out the pattern so for women that bowl on it it actually makes the moves a little more predictable and price with the hammer and the First Strike of game one right here as you'll see you can you can you can start just a little bit further right and be just a little straighter and then migrate to the left into that 10 11 12 area again with this soil especially for women their tendency is women have a little bit lower rev rate that's not a bad thing but with a with a higher friction oil it allows them more predictability in the moves on the lane B leaves two open they'll try to pick up spare any fatigue you think possibly for this southern team definitely and you know we talked about it while we were watching the match I think it's more mental than it is physical I mean these ladies train they're programmed to Bow a lot of games but it's that mental fatigue I think that actually adds to the pressure they went to the Limit with Jackson State to make it to this Championship round we'll see if they can battle through it open frame in the third for southern changes to a spare ball which is a plastic ball we've seen that off of both teams ball just skids by the spare that's going to be crucial you know that was what what the coach said and actually both coaches mentioned mentioned it in their interviews that filling frames is the key to winning championships pen AR gr of the Freshman I believe she is our lone Lefty so right here she's going to have the line all to herself no matter what and I love her game by the way she gets out of the ball great uh but right here looking just a little tight on that lane I would really for her I would just change to a stronger ball and let her just feed the ball to the pocket asked her earlier if there were any advantages or disadvantages to being a left and she said she said there are some challenges but you work through it mm and the back in there open for Alabama state but they still hold a lead right here on she misses the spare I understand but right here that gave her good feedback because she hit the pocket yes she didn't take out the back pin but right there that gave her a read on the lane as to what she needs to do Nyla Wilson with an opportunity here out of Clinton Maryland go so Wilson on the board here for Southern and another try coming up for spare now comes in just a little bit light she is using a stronger ball with a little bit of surface but I like where she's playing I think off of that she could just make a parallel of a two in one even a two and two just to see what she has uh but I like that ball motion again this is what this is all about when she shoots her spare she should come back hey I threw that one good I felt like I didn't get around that one Whatever whatever that feedback is you need to relay that to your teammates so they can make the best adjustment and a spare picked up by Wilson you have to give this southern team a lot of credit they faced a ton of adversity in this tournament so far including losing to Alabama State yesterday and they're able to kind of answer the bell all the time it seems like I always find that amazing too you know you you have to face again the team that put you in the losers bracket you know it's like now we're really out for a Revenge right uh but you just have to regroup it's a new day on a degree the other Lefty in the line up offers up a strike for the Hornets Miss is just a little right of Target goes Brooklyn but well I should say Jersey to her I guess Brooklyn to us from the right side you know um and gets the break and now Jaylen Rogers the anchor for southern an impressive showing throughout this tournament for Rogers [Music] many of the players on both sides with family members in attendance watching this Championship outing last pen just dips down making a spare a little bit more palatable this time around yeah leaves the one two but as you can see right here she's Crossing 12 I mean that ball gets out to two and it comes in you know missing the pocket so right there those those last few shots from the team teammates PRI needed to tell them something and again if if they feel like they they want to play the lanes a certain way which happens right there that's telling you you probably need a little bit of a stronger ball something that's definitely going to pick up and read that pattern right now everything is just scooting right down the lane and she picks up the spare and spare shots are so important because right there that gave her a great reach she was straighter through the front part of the lane gets closer to the pocket now she can make that adjustment all right do I want to move left of it do I want to make move a little right of it what did I feel what did I see and then again discuss that with coach and then with your other teammates you know they've bold enough to know what they're doing Savannah Razer the player known to her teammates as big Bank taking our time on the approach Razer is sharp yet again Alabama State enjoying an early lead in game one 24 swack Bowling Championship Kelsey quinning set to deliver the to open how about the keys here for southern Carol well there were two things that came out of coach's mouth immediately keep that first ball in play and make the spare again Baker all about filling frames you only get two shots you get two frames each you have to make him the best two frames you you have in you right so he said let's keep in play and make whatever we leave and Quinny splits the two pens to leave that frame open and to your point Carolyn there you go on the side of Alabama State their keys how do they set up and take advantage of what's going on well they had a few different ways of thinking about things they want to control what they can control means stay in the moment don't think ahead they want to make good shots make the spare and most of all stay positive because if they stay positive everything else will take care of itself back to lric Ste and O comes through with a strike great shot by LC look at her go I love her I love her little personality she's great but as you can say she's a little bit straighter up the lane ball is hitting the pocket light that's a great thing and I keep telling everybody this hitting that pocket light and you're striking is just fine don't worry the lanes will come to you in a few frames but right there that is a great read on the lane so you know using her teammate so so saah and her playing the lanes the same just from a different angle Adams and ball hooks into the gutter for Adams and we just saw the graphic about the open frames and they could potentially have another one here right they're getting the ball to the right as soon as they let it go it is on its way going to the right again if you're going to play just a little bit of angle on this pattern to start you're going to need something a little bit stronger right here as you can see you know I mean they only had about 12 minutes of practice I believe lanes are transitioning all the time but again I think she needs to either move to the right or there you go see how she kept that around the nine board down Lane little bit closer I mean obviously I think she probably over exaggerated because the first one went in the gutter but right there she knows that she just needs to keep that more that uh ball more in front of her down Lane that 910 area now against Jackson State they played in a different set of lanes does that make a difference at all potentially oh I think so I I think every lane uh every lane is different you know the topography in every Bowling Center every lane is different uh you know a lane unlike people think Elena is not dead flat there is a thing called topography but yes it makes a big difference this is Emily price one more to go that 10 pen hanging around great shot by Emily price one of the heroes of this team throughout the season when you look at the individual leaders heading into today price among them in this tournament and this is why she keeps the ball in play she's setting it down around 1213 getting it down to that Tracer we're looking at the Tracer down Lane which is your 10 the one on the right furthest to the right if you're looking on TV and that is what she's using as her like what you would call your gutter she wants to get it to that spot down Lane and both LC and her have hit the headpin a spare for Price the team camaraderie for Alabama state is so special and unique they enjoy being with each other for sure I do I that's one of the best things about Collegiate polling is the camaraderie the the just kindred spirit of helping each other and feeding off each other and becoming friends for life and and truly you know I was a part of it many years ago and um you know two of my best friends are from my Collegiate team so they're like my sisters so yeah it's just this it's it's an awesome environment to open for Balden and Southern right you could see right there coach Doyle going I can't show you because I'm obviously not on camera but coach Doyle with his hands kind of saying Square it up a little bit Square it up a little bit just the angles are a little too open with the shiny bowet ball just getting down the lane way too far and not reading the pattern balen for spare Oh I thought she had that yeah just missed it and it's been that kind of start for southern just off by a little bit and they did that in the final match you know I when I spoke to coach D I said you know you you had a chance there to close it out and ran into a couple of bad frames uh you know what was going through your mind what were telling the the the team and he said you know what we made some mistakes but we looked at each other and said you know what we got another game we need to get it together so we need to let that go start over and really that's right now the game is is basically over they need to get lined up and get ready for the next match pton harrove and harrove we'll try to pick up the next four pin asked the team earlier who they thought was the funniest person on the team and the first name that crept to mind for many of them was pyton harrove the Freshman I think they all have great personalities you know I I obviously don't know them as well as they know each other of course but uh both teams are just a joy to speak to and my husband and I had the the privilege of working with Southern quite some time ago and just a great group of ladies and just always wanting to learn so it's you know the future is is bright for the swack championships that's a tough pickup opportunity there for har Grove but made the best out of it picking up three of the four and another example of a great ball reach he changed balls to shoot that spare it was close to the pocket again get ready for that next game right and now there might be a change in the bowling balls to allow her to play the lanes just a little differently a look at the max scores for this first game it's a best of seven Series in Alabama state with the edge so far yes and and and again because the match is is mathematically over um what I would use going into the 10th Frame is whether you have someone sitting on the bench or you want to try a different bowling ball do it during that ninth or 10th Frame uh and learn something Wilson learned something there picks up the strike for Souther great form at the end of end of her approach uses her legs just lets that ball drop from the top both teams have become so much better over the last two and three years unbelievable and that goes to you know the coaching they receive from the coaches that they have and obviously coaches that they work with at home as well Alana decree fourth in average scoring in the tournament through yesterday's action so what I would do here is I would she missed the pocket right and if she threw it good if she if she said you know what I I liks the way I threw that I would throw a different ball or make a drastic move on the lane and just try something because the the spare doesn't matter the G the game is obviously already won so why not learn something so that we're ready for the next game so you have an opportunity maybe take a risk yes three out of the four for degree as Alabama State still firmly in control here in game one just pulls that ball to the right and just misses the headp PIN to the right tell you I remember her bowling um and I think it was last year when we watched her Bowl um she was like a machine she bowed so well um looks a little tentative but again first game so I I suspect we'll see some different shot making coming into this second game early on the strikes in favor of Alabama State as Roger strides in two more needed for Rogers and you can see again that you mentioned the hook it's kind of varied here from player to player right I it's apparent I mean they're leaving a lot of the headpin right or then they go Brooklyn so not probably what they would say I'm not totally lined up correct um but when she shot the spare it was a great shot so again what I would do is make the spare and then I would try something totally different and the first thing I would do is I would probably go to a stronger ball and just see if you can get that ball to pick up just a little bit sooner read that pattern and allow it to make that move towards the head pin Rogers gets the spare and yet again the anchor delivers for southern great shot see I talked about that Tracer down Lane it was one board to the right of it hitting nine down Lane and hits the pocket nicely so right there you know saying okay I got to get my ball somehow my you know my break point needs to be around that 9 10 however I want to get there again they all play it differently you know using um Alabama the same thing you know Savannah and L are getting to the same break point they're just doing it a little differently different rev rate I mean we can all do it we just got to watch and then you put it to your game and make those adjustments nine out of the 10 pens at 10 pen left open to close out game one here for southern Alabama state will get an opportunity here to close up things on a positive note they will win game one as Savannah Razer will step in talking to Andrew Chapman the head coach of Alabama State earlier he said Razer does hurt talking with her game and we'll see if she can close this out on a high note to propel Alabama State into game two tough pickup opportunity there for Razer potentially definitely use her strike ball she'll move a couple to the right to well this is one of those spares I did want to talk about so the 28 so this is something that I've seen become um more and more prevalent as I watch college bowling so I would move a couple to the right and shoot it with my strike ball and wherever my strike L is right now I have seen though more of the Collegiate players use their plastic ball and shoot straight at the 28 um I've always been more of hooking into it easier to get the back pin out kind of like Razer just did there an incredible shot by Savannah Razer to get the spare and she'll get one more row here again this is a best of seven Series this game one just about set to come to a close here after this next spin by Razer four left open by Razer but nonetheless Alabama State wins game one of the best of seven SE Series in the 2024 swack Championship an impressive start for the Hornets Razer Hornets on top in game one we'll have game two coming up in a moment back to LY as Southern will try to even things up Derk Jones and the Hall of Famer Carolyn Doran Ballard with you from Arlington Texas as we get set for game two and of course these two teams looking to add their University's name to the roll call of Champions Alabama State winning as recently in 2022 and then 2017 meanwhile for southern they're looking for their first title since 2011 as we get a look at LC oin this is her first tournament back after being involved in a car accident a few weeks back no Sting with a spare opportunity on the way looks like she played the left lane similar to how she was playing the right lane look at that I'm telling you if you had seen a picture of her from her first year it's unbelievable the transformation I think that was a very good shot she can make a move off that um just stay aggressive with it maybe increase her ball speed just a little bit but I would make a move she will change balls to a a plastic ball to shoot the spare the winner of this best of seven Series wins the swack and advances to the NCA tournament both of these teams would love that opportunity o starts it up for the Hornets in game two she's a very good spare shooter so I listening to her team there and that's what it's all about right here changes ball simple right ac across Lane picks up the 3610 Kel Kelsey Quinny will try to respond here for Southern and being a game behind here for southern what kind of response do you expect from him them here well I I would say you know during their little break as they're making a little crossover there probably there was a little team huddle I'm sure it's you know what game's over we we need to just make the adjustments execute um I still think there should be some ball change or they need to keep their angles a little bit more Square I liked that shot that was very similar actually to LC shot I think she can just make a little bump left with her feet off that and just be aggressive again she'll change balls I think the majority of ladies do change to a plastic ball to shoot the spare I think that was a good read for her and her team so they need to decide what is that adjustment going to be on her next shot and don't forget they're flipping Lanes so in the midst of all this coach needs to be making sure of what's taking place on each lane and M and being prepared for those adjustments as they change a spare each way to start up the first frame here hits the 610 with the spare ball good tip for any upand cominging bowler I like using plastic shooting its spars takes the lane out of play you stand usually in the same spot and just hit your target no thinking involved I like no thinking Emily price and a strike Emily has been Rock Solid here first game and her first shot on the left lane again playing them very similar to lric little more ball speed using a ball that rolls just a little bit sooner but right here keeping it in front of her I could tell you every single one of these ladies looks so much more solid at the line again you know they work out they have the coaches have even learned more about what it takes to be an all around athlete and you can see that in how the programs um are getting stronger and stronger uh over the years well this has to be as Ashley Adams picks up eight out of 10 th this makes it a challenging situation for southern because you of course you have Razer who is outstanding but price has been excellent so far and that's even before you get to razor exactly and and again it's another great tip and I always say this youbody like I want to increase my rev rate I want to hook it more that's great I'm all for it but your rev rate your ball speed your all of it needs to match or it's not going to be productive so again at this point you know focus on what you do well right and watch what the other Bowlers are doing and then incorporate that into your game if somebody's playing 10 and being successful figure out how you can do that naturally left open there for southern it's back to it Go the Hornets you've been in a lot of competitions throughout your time take me into the mindset of a competitor with a championship on the line what do you think these players are going through here today oh I think there's a a couple of things you know one is is nerves I mean I I've always felt nerves nerves are a good thing you just have to uh understand your own body and how to control them in in that moment but there's nerves there's anticipation there's uh you know getting ahead of yourself when you should be staying in the moment um but I think the biggest thing is nerves and breathing you know I you're trying to slow your heart rate down so that you're not all over the place and you're going okay well I got to go yet no gez there's 100 things going through your mind so uh it's more about breathing taking that moment and really focusing on the task at hand right here she did start with the ball that she threw on the right lane but again goes Brooklyn just need to get that angle squared up just a little bit I'd move her honestly I would just have her move her feet keep her eyes the same see what it does here's Balden leaves that back open but a very possible spare opportunity on the way good shot she's a little bit deeper right here gets the ball and I think it was about 15 or so to about 910 down Lane comes in just a little light but leaves a seven pin very sparle looking at that replay you wonder how that seven pin stayed up you got got get Bing for spare easy money that's a big shot for southern now with having two left-handers on the team it's nice to be able to have someone to go back to and kind of talk to about the lane you know when you're the only one it's kind of tough um so it's key for them to communicate great shot there's that angle she moved a little bit further right with her feet looks like she kept her eyes the same little bit straighter throughout her approach that right there looks great got it down to to about eight great shot so again she can now go back to her teammate and say okay this is what I did and I threw it good now let's just figure out what you need to do to get to the same spot that's exactly what they talked about earlier today they do lean on each other for feedback and a spare for degree So Hard Grove a lefty degree a lefty and both helping Alabama State enjoy a lead here in game two and with only two of them on the left there's going to be yes there's transition every shop but there's going to be less transition because there's less of them so you get them lined up they could be unstoppable you know where the right is going to have to continue to make those adjustments because there's more right-handed Bowlers Nyla Wilson and Wilson comes up with a strike and at this point you take exactly what you you get when you get that Brooklyn hit if it strikes it's a added bonus and now it'll be Savannah razer's turn as we approach the Midway Point here of game two the swack bowling champ I ship Alabama state with a one game to nothing lead they talked about the the players and maybe what they're going through how about the the families of both teams the anxiety I'm sure is actually in some cases maybe more from their end than the [Music] players Razer getting situated and now Razer will come back and reload here could see she was off balance at the line on that shot think that reload maybe threw off a little bit I don't know if something bothered her but she seems like she's stuck cuz I saw her you know do her foot after she threw the shot seems like she it was kind of abrupt so she missed her Target left lift the 3691 she'll move uh left use her strike ball to shoot the spare Razer with the spare soft spoken but the game is anything but great spare too 36910 is not an easy spare to make not something I want to shoot at Rogers will try to counter leaves that right four open and I believe that was a ball change for her so she went to something that was a little more even rolling but it is shiny so right here as you can see it makes that left turn right as it hits the end of the pattern 36910 we just saw Savanah to make it she will again take her strike ball movees move left to shoot the spare got to make sure you get that back pin out that's why with the double wood I uh except for the bucket I I always use the strike ball for the 28 and the 369 10 Rogers for spare gets it halfway through game number two the Hornets lead one game to nothing more from Arlington in a moment National bowling campus in Arlington Texas Alabama State and Southern battling for the swack bowling title in a best of seven it's an early lead for Alabama State Midway through game two Alabama State trying to get back to the NCA tournament they've won the swack twice based out of Montgomery Alabama established in 1867 with an enrollment a little bit under 5500 and they are proud to represent their University here in the swack Bowling Championship o another nice start for o looks like she made the move left got that ball I think right where she wanted it to if you see right here she got that ball down to about nine skitted just a little bit but gets lucky and leaves the two pin but she did make the move I like going light better than I do high so you know again depending what her move was she can move back aboard or just bring her eyes closer there's there's a lot of things depending on what the bowler does as as their move to get that Bower read just a little bit sooner for spare she knew she had that and that's why you know right there that's why she is the leadoff bowler you know even with talking to um Coach Andrew um chadam that it's it's about people that can keep the ball in the pocket fill the frames give some feedback but it's the motivating factor too that you know with with the confidence that she has that she exudes to her teammates Kelsey Quinny picks up a strike great shot by Kelsey everybody seems now to be making the move becoming a little more comfortable right there love the Tracer we can see it ball bang right into the pocket great shot and you know second match it's almost you know seventh frame it is yeah the nerves are starting yeah you have them but maybe a little more comfortable knowing what you have to do and price with two on the back end for spare coming up Miss is just a little left of Target all goes through the nose breaks it up leaves the 610 she will also switch to a spare ball to shoot the spare you can see her taped fingers and she gets the spare I'm glad you brought that up to tape fingers because this has been a team that has battled injuries throughout the course of the season and they have really held in there to get to this point yeah they have I mean poor L had the accident she's got some ligament issues they have one player on the bench that's a uh concussion protocol I mean it's taken them a lot of of team will to get them to this championship match or left open it's Naomi Smith getting an opportunity here the junior out of Southfield Michigan same Hometown as l o and Smith comes in and goes to work immediately with a spare great spare shot again playing a little bit straighter a little bit further right than her teammates but right there as you can see the Tracer hits about 8 n hits light onto the headpin makes the spare that just gave her an idea of what she needs to do when she goes to the other Lane Park r oh great great adjustment leaves the dreaded 710 but good shot look at the angles looks just like her teammate comes in Just A Pinch light as you can see the pins go right in front of the seven and the 10 so what's the approach here on a 710 I mean this is one of the tougher shots in all of bullet get one get one and she indeed does get one Alabama State at 149 but Southern still very much alive here in game two finish ing up the point you made about the injury situation when I talked to the team earlier they said please shout out our trainer Devon Cola okay who has done an exceptional job keeping the team together with quote duct tape and chicken wire it's Those Behind the Scenes people right three left here for Balden and this is a a huge opportunity here for southern to hang around here and maybe make this thing even after two just getting that ball a little bit too far right down Lane it's just not grabbing the lane just getting just a little too far leaving the 248 gets the 248 and the spare as we head to the ninth strike ball right into it you know and every it looked like it was actually going to go a little bit further left and almost leave that back pin great spare Alana degree the Lefty picks up nine with a great opportunity for a spare right here gets that ball just it it headed right right off of her hand but she got lucky and leaves the two pin this is a big shot here they have not been able to shake totally free of Southern the spare so the Louisiana native comes through through and how about that Max score so Southern still with an opportunity to Come Away with a win here in game two they need to finish out strong sou can definitely put the pressure on them with the strike here and Wilson with three open here with a chance for spare Nyla likes to play the lanes right to left little bit straighter angles again a little more right to left as you can see right here I all I would do for her after she makes a spare even moving to other lane is I would move her feet just a couple left and let her do the same thing because she really doesn't throw it way right way left she kind of just likes to kind of keep it going towards the head pin so simple adjustments to keep that ball in the pocket good spare shooter covers up the 3610 another spare for southern as we go to the 10th Frame in game two Savannah Razer the anchor for Alabama State as we get a look at the comparisons what have you seen from the anchors on each side well as you can see Alabama has one strike where obviously you know Southern has none spares probably been the most important but it's not if either one of those anchor Bowlers can't step up up to the plate at any time that's the reason both of these teams are here it is a team effort but their anchor Bowlers have been CL as you can see right here out of Savannah definitely gave that ball a little bit more room than her last shot carries all 10 in the pit and the emotion there yet again from Razer rer does it again backto back strikes missed way left of Target you heard it as soon as she let it go she said oh oh way left of Target she's hitting nine at the Tracer she hit about 12 gets the break the pin hits and look at how those pins fell one back one forward she's been so impressive yet again today the leader and average score coming in to today's play in the tournament nine out of 10 not a bad way to close out game two for Alabama state so game is over again we have Jaylen coming up she's been in the pocket she did make a ball change I would let her throw the first shot she hits the pocket you know you know she's lined up I would you know I don't know if they have somebody on the bench that maybe somebody who will be coming in but let them throw either at the spare or another strike shot just to see what they have just in case they need someone off the bench great shot 10 pen left open yeah and it's good ball change for her that Ball's a little bit smoother I wish it had a little surface on it I think that the shine is allowing it to get down the lane just a little bit too long but definitely a better motion um it was a step in the right direction she'll figure it out Rogers for spare picks it up certainly better outing for southern here in game two but be a few pens shy of evening this best of Seven Up Rogers to close it out so picks up seven to end the 10th Frame and a game to win for Alabama State Savannah Razer and the hor it's up two games here in the swack Bowling Championship game three on the way from Arlington in a moment with you for the swack Bowling Championship it is game three on the way two games and nothing lead for Alabama State a lot of the honores for the swack in this particular championship series including L ostein the bowler of the Year some tremendous Talent here in the building this is unbelievable if you're looking at these Awards you have both of these teams correct freshman of the Year Coach of the Year bowler of the year I'd say they had a good season if if you were to really summon up you know the icing is the championship Kelsey Quinny of Southern just going a little high I I I really do think she's in the right part of the lane I just her ball speed's just a little slow and the easiest way to increase ball speed especially quickly get your feet moving just a little bit quicker to increase it naturally I think if she just had a little bit more behind it it would be just fine as we could see it she did that on the right lane tricky pickup here for Quinny gets two of the three and that's a tough spot to be in right EX when you leave a split you're supposed to get the wood especially if you're on a strike you know this is only the first frame but you always want to make sure you get the wood because some of these matches are determined by one or two pins and we saw that in every match there was a game or two that was decided by one or two pins LC o Stein will begin maners here do you think there's any difference in going first or second in a situation like this um I I don't know because I think each each team gets to start or end you know what I mean each team gets to start first so you alternate um I think it's in the deciding in the deciding game is when I think it's it's crucial you know if if you go into a tie or if you have Lane Choice um I would prefer to put pressure yes on the opponent so I would I if it were up to me I would choose to to you know step on my opponent's jugular and get them out of the way and just try no I just thought I just thought I'd say that because every everybody who's listening who's a friend of mine probably knows I'm like that but you are edor for sure but um I would like to I like putting the pressure on because I think it gives the opponent something else to think about tin for spare just missed it looked like it was going toward the pin but again you know there's that oil in the middle part of the lane it just sailed right by it you'll see just missing that two pin now not not that I know she's not happy she missed it but those are the spares the easy ones the single pins that you should be making those shouldn't be your open frames you know the splits are going to happen but you got to stay on those easy spares Naomi Smith picks up a strike so she's come in here and made a difference spared out earlier a strike here thought that one just a little bit left but carried the Brooklyn right here you'll see I love it cuz everybody who's watching at home can you see that Tracer and once it gets to the left of the Tracer you know it's either gone high or Brooklyn once they get it to the right of the Tracer or on the Tracer it's been light or High flush so that's your gauge as to how you're getting to that point but again it's just a simple move with the feet or make a parallel give yourself some angle Emily price left with not an easy spare pickup no double wood leaves the two AC coming in just a little light in the pocket you mentioned double wood what is double wood double wood is when there's a pin behind another pin just like you see here with the two the eight or um when we saw the 3 six 9 10 so the the nine pin is behind the three pin so we call that double wood and price gets it not easy to do but price comes through in the clutch Picture Perfect hitting the two pin face on to allow the ball to take out the it Jeremiah Balden reopen for Balden jeriah has a little bit more axis rotation off her hand that ball makes that left turn right there at the end leaving the 3610 she'll switch to her spare ball to shoot at it cross the lane Holden for spare and that is wide of the three pins that's unlike her too she's a very good spare shooter just a little probably she's walking in the back just taking a moment to herself it's you know it happens again your your your team is down down two Z not over yet plenty of games left but the pressure does tend to build back up when you are behind so she walked into the back and just taking a minute to regroup and get ready for the next shot a freshman Peyton har girl looked like a pretty good shot off her hand as you can see the right-hander is going high leaving the 3610 the left-hander goes a little bit High leaves the 247 well you just talked about something I want to go back to the the the standpoint of of this southern team being in a hole here you know you don't want to press obviously in this situation because you're still a long way to go position this absolutely and you and you have to find and that's where that mental focus comes into play is you now have to find a way to channel it saying okay we are not out of this yes we're behind that's just the way it is but we have seven more frames to go here in this game to win and then we have how many more games to catch up so plenty of time got to focus on everything moving forward you cannot change what's behind you but you can change what's in front of you no question best of seven first to win four goes at the NCAA tournament with the swack title Nyla Wilson getting closer to hitting that pocket just needs to move a little bit more to the left goes Brooklyn was hoping to trip the six pin but leaves just the six will shoot Cross Lane again with her spare ball she has come such a long way in her game as well I remember when I first saw her bowl for Southern and one of the things uh they focused on was she used to have a super high back swing and kind of pulled down on her a little bit and she looked so much more smooth now and fluid going to the line um again just a testament to the coaching and the working out and learning what's going to make them better Alana degree teammates call her Lonnie leaves two open that was definitely closer much better shot I like the angle better on that shot maybe just move her feet a little bit to the right going just a little high leaving the two4 Stax got I believe in you here's degree oh and leaves it open just by hair takes the two off the four yeah we talk about those you know I always say easy spares let's just say the makeable ones I don't want to say easy because you know when when there are things on the line and your nerves get to you nothing's easy but the ones that are Spar the ones you need to make to fill those frames until the team can get some chemistry going some you know good shots in a row carry the strikes we've seen Alabama State leave a couple of those opportunities on the table here in game three and with the strike here we have a tie game Rogers got a little help there with the last pin falling down but the 10 open for spare and again this is part of Southern today they just find a way to battle through the adversity have an opportunity here to jump out in front a little bit further here in game three there's a spare thing I like about Jaylen very simple right very simple game gets the ball into her swing uses her legs let's ball drop from the top it is great and she has turned in such a good spare shooter hence why she is the anchor bowler number one but she's also increased her ball speed since the first time when she started on the team so again just a testament to the coaching and what they're learning and she has been steady here today five straight spares on the back end and for Southern and here is Savannah Razer Razer gets the strike two games and nothing Le for Alabama State against Southern in game three of the swack Bowling Championship Derek Jones and Carolyn Doran Ballard with you be sure to watch the NCAA Women's Bowling Championship on ESPNU Saturday April 13th at 900 p.m. Eastern from thunderbow Lanes in Allen Park Michigan visit ncaa.org for more information Kelsey Quinny comes up with a strike in the six look at that finish she looks great at the line again just gets it a little left to Target I think they need to start just shifting everything left feet and eyes and just get that ball down to the right just a little bit more again not right of that Tracer and uh again she also gets arounded a little bit she may want to just dial back her wrist device a little bit just to be a little bit flatter a little more up the back of it and get it to read a little smoother looked like the ball speed was up a little bit more that time as well mhm here's LC o and oin has a tough split coming up another great shot she has kept the ball in the pocket right here comes in just a little bit light didn't drive through the pins and you could see again on the replay look at the pins how it went right in front of the seven right in front of the 10 no help at all try to go to the back end there and leaves it open tough situation for ostein to be in as Southern comes up in the seventh Smith who has bold well Off the Bench just leaves at 10 open fantastic shot she's a little bit more up the back of it like I just spoke about little more up the back of it balls reading just a little sooner smoother when it makes that move to the pocket look at that leverage anybody at home who's watching and wants to talk about leverage at the line I mean her chin is almost directly over her knee look at that I mean she looks great she's been excellent since she came into the game game is simple love it rolls it off her hand she's not trying to do too much to it allowing the ball to read the p pattern and do the work oh just catching the gutter there right before contct and the seventh now the opportunity here for Alabama State Ile price strides in cluster of pens left for Price everybody taking some deep breaths control that heart rate the nerves just a little bit gets this one a little bit too far right never recovers rice for spare only can get one there so Southern up 12 and for southern they are trying to get a game here they're down two games to nothing they lost 87 to 133 in game one 198 to 176 in game two well if they're going to step on the gas pedal now is a good time since they are leading thr some good shots make the spares and Holden gets the extra English for the strike gets a love tap there at the end knocks down the 10 goes back great setup for the ninth look at that little tap boom half pocket hit Best In The Biz the bounce it has not gone the way of many of the bowlers here on both sides working out for Balden as she gets her first what a counter there by pton har girl excellent shot hitting about 12 at the arrows out to about eight fantastic great adjustment super aggressive and gets rewarded she knew she had that it looked like right after she threw it look at the max score Southern and Prime position here to win game three there you go as I said she needs to keep inching her feet left she loves to go right to left now her angles are straight she's where she needs to be and she can repeat I have seen her do it right there 12 out to about eight perfect blow in the rack pin into the seven excellent shot now we saw the consistent play of Rogers throughout the first two games and this game but now the others have really stepped up here in game three degree and degree picks up a strike playing it similar to her teammate that one she did not miss right perfect angle right here again hitting about 11 out to about 78 perfect Lefty Lefty goes strike strike telling you if you get those two lined up off of each other and repeating team could be unbeatable and assuredly that will give them some confidence as we get set for game four here momentarily and we did see a lot of this during match play that coming down to the 10th Frame it's key as to what that first team does as to what's going to happen with the team to follow jayen Rogers fantastic shot and now with a chance to pick up a spare here with their team on its way to grabbing a win here in game three just leaving that 10 open Rogers taking her time here in the 10th and she gets a spare I believe count Count's important it's another spare for Rogers oh coming into this Frame it picked up five straight spares has another one here and we'll look to close out this last frame in game three for southern on a high note the Junior from Jackson Mississippi delivers a strike on her final throw in game three so a Strong finish for southern as Alabama State believe Alabama can strike out for 179 I'm just going to double check it'll be Savannah Razer good ball and a strike picked up by Razer and that as you just saw has left the door open for Alabama state it looked like Southern had a great opportunity here to grab the win but Razer still has a chance absolutely she has to throw the [Music] double she made the move to the left looks like she was a little bit deeper which I like gets the trip for let's see what she does on the second shot oh wobbling but staying gets that one in Just A Pinch but boy I thought it was good good enough I'm going to tell you that right now almost got the almost got the the trip for again for the spare picks it up but Southern narrowly wins game three by two and Southern is able to draw closer two to one in the best of seven series will look to tie this up we head to game number four Alabama State leads the swack Bowling Championship two games to one in a best of seven and now in Arlington Texas game four on the way Southern out of Baton Rouge Louisiana established in 1880 with an enrollment of just over 88,200 seven times swack bowling champions but looking for their first title since 2011 and they'll have to go through this Hornets team that has L oin stepping up first and oin gets the strike to begin the first for Alabama State she is the silent killer she stays in the pocket she lets her ball do the work right here gets there lets it go she's made the move to the left just tickles the headpin right there rolling out the four five7 and O who left that spare open to start up the last game begin this one a little bit differently Quinny so Quinny with the spare opportunity on the way she's moved left but right here just gets gets it down over the Tracer you know it almost seems as if her Ball's a little too sharp off of the pattern so I would go to something that's probably a little bit smoother or kind of like we talked about with the girls that actually have the best look not rotating around it as much just being behind it a little bit more smooth out smooth out that backend reaction the spare for Quinny that keeps Southern and Striking Distance here after one and they have to feel positively after falling in a whole two games to nothing and now getting the chance here to to draw even in game four oh absolutely it's it's a it's a a breath of new life not that they ever felt like they were out of it again a lot of frames a lot of games but now it's like hey wait we're here to be reckoned with price with a somewhat interesting degree of difficulty here on this next spare leaving the wash out just misses to the right she also it looked like she used her upper body on that shot just wasn't a good shot she didn't like it either she was shaking her head leaving the one two 4 10 you want to hit to the left of the head pin and send it over into the into the headpin to send it over into the 10 pin but she gets two Southern with an opportunity to build from there after the open frame here from Alabama State I do like see if she walked right off the approach she went up to her coach chitchatting away trying to decide sometimes it's just some words of encouragement you know it's not always sometimes physical or doing this doing that too many thoughts it's something where hey slow your brain down let's take it one shot at a time let's get focused and start over you mentioned the mental approach and the mental side of it as you get later and later into this series that can become a very powerful thing 100% um you know slowing your heart rate down when you're in the in In the Heat of battle is not an easy thing to do anyone who's played Sports uh is very aware of that right you you don't want to First all nobody wants to lose right but losing for yourself and losing for a team is is to totally different worlds you know what I mean you don't want to let the team down by the way you win with five or eight however many on the team you win with 10 you lose with 10 it's not a a m me I I but there is that added pressure of I don't want to let anybody down so uh you have to know how to put all of that in perspective and stick to the process of making the best shots you can great pickup there to leaving the 310 Naomi Smith has been a great great addition to this lineup here today as they get the spare in the second frame and Alabama state has some work to do and they do it with a strike another fantastic shot by the first left-hander on the team coming in and light and blowing the rack feeling a bit more comfortable on each lane loved the ball change smart move now it's all about execution she's a freshman I mean how much can her game grow here in the early stages of her career and you know they have four four seniors but L has that covid year so yeah you lose through but three but boy it's it's nice to be able to keep one Balden able to knock down nine and a chance to close out this frame with a spare almost gets the same hit that L did almost knocking out that 457 but the five pin [Music] stands Bing for spare picks it up like we talked about earlier the last match those are the spares you need to make those are the ones you you just can't miss especially now yeah's 2-1 but again there's only so many games left you have to start taking advantage of making the ones you can and again if you leave the split get the count Alana degree and she's able to get nine of the 10 and a great spare opportunity for de G another great shot almost gets the six pin heading into the eight pin right here goes just a little high in the pocket but oh almost gets over there leaves one hanging and now trying to get that eight and cannot so she did not opt to change to a spare ball she moved off her strike Target which is fine just gets that ball just a little wide hits the oil never recovers here's another bowler for southern who has gotten better and better as this day is worn on Nyla Wilson whoa another great shot I'm telling you once you get her lined up she can repeat and keep that ball into the pocket right here again just right up that 8 n 10 for her she'll change balls to shoot the spare depending on what occurs because this is the fourth frame she'll have one more shot if she throws another good shot and leaves that flat 10 could be a ball change just something that's a little bit cleaner with a little bit more on the back Wilson for spare they have put pressure on Alabama State and you get the sense that the the tide has turned here as they say but here is someone who can be the great equalizer Savannah Razer these two two have a chance for spare got that ball a little right I didn't think it was that bench threw it pretty good threw it pretty good just goes down the lane gets down the lane a little bit further gets a little bit further right I mean you know just a pinch leaves herself pretty easy spare and picks it up so Razer gets the spare and now Jaylen roggers will step in here momentarily Rogers has been a model of consistency so far for southern the first three games and Rogers will have another shot and another spare definitely move deeper but see how she gets it left of the Trac once they get it left of the Tracer and they don't get it to the right bll just picks up goes Brooklyn but leaves the nine pin single pin fair I'm not saying anything is easy I hate to say that but it's it's it's you know a lot easier to make than a multi pin spare how does that sound yeah that checks out run it very methodical in her preparation to each shot if you notice sometimes she turns around her back to the pins closes her eyes then turns around very just very methodical another spare for Jaylen Rogers Southern has a lead here in game number four can they even up this series come on back to find out two games to one lead for Alabama state in the swack Championship state with a two games to one lead over Southern in the best of seven it is Southern though leading here at the Midway point of game four in Arlington Texas Derek Jones and Carolyn Doran Ballard with you as we get set for lric o and a strike for o another fantastic shot I'm telling you she is such a good Lane read for this team she keeps it in the pocket she can tell you whether she threw it you know well or not I mean it it's just she has been Rock Solid I think she is such a key player it's obvious in her being a player of the year for the swack conference she has to be consistent Kelsey Quinny will try to answer and has a seven pen to deal with on the back end Best Shot she has thrown yet she actually gave that ball some angle watch how this ball right there see how it's to the right of that Tracer finally got it to the right of that Tracer comes in just a little light almost gets a PIN to roll over leaves the seven pin great shot 20 for spare and she gets it when another player who has stepped up here as this game in this series has worn on now it's Emily Price's turn and more double wood in the future of Emily price she actually looks like she moved a little bit further right both on the approach and the lane keeping it a little more direct right here little more direct almost a little more right to left comes in just a little light leaves the 28 leaves the eight open for Alabama state right here just hooks too much to the left of the two pin leaving the back pin that's where when you have that double wood you have to hit just a little bit more right on that pin in front to be able to carry the pin and back Smith tries to take advantage and she and Smith showing some swag after that strike great shot coming in just a little light I love the light hit because eventually it will be High flush little bit more direct as we're seeing now some of the girls are migrating to the right hits light blows out that 457 almost five yes the confidence has increased with each game here for southern wow that EX exploded on the pens from Payton harro and you saw that when she let it go she I think she yelled at the the foul line oh no no she missed just little right a Target there hoping for the best and she got the High flush Brooklyn talking about confidence and swag pyton Hart grve plays with a lot of that Balden can't continue the roll of strikes no coming in just a little bit light leaving the bucket and again this ball just way right that's all threw pretty good but just got it right down Lane I think she's playing the lanes right she's been pretty much well in the pocket for all the matches she will use her strike ball to hook into the bucket got it we'll see what the approach here is four pens and she knocks down all four this has been so interesting to watch throughout the day Southern if you're just joining us was taken to the Limit by Jackson State earlier in the day and really you wondered how much gas they had left in the tank and early on it didn't look like much but that they have steadily improved absolutely they're rebounding they know that this is is this is crunch time right I mean yes we have numerous games left but you want to get ahead you want to stay ahead and close it out as soon as you can you don't want to give the other team any opportunity to close you out degree for spare picks it up look at the max score on both sides Southern in a good spot at the moment with the edge but we saw in the last game sometimes that that Gap can narrow quickly if you're not careful correct it'll be Nyla Wilson's turn here's Wilson and it looked like there didn't quite get the hook in time did not little bit too Direct in front of her might even got it to the right I have to look on the replay didn't look so bad looks like where she's been playing I don't know if she tried to rotate around it a little more I knew she was in the back chatting know if they said you had to get around it just a little more but it just never read it again we need to hit to the left of the head pin more on the one two to slide it over into the 10 left to 10 open and the door is open for Alabama State here potentially in the final frame Savannah Razer the anchor for Alabama state has been exceptional yet again incoming around central spare opportunity right and and basically she spare strikes they have 161 so looks like a great shot she I like how she's moved left she's going to have to keep moving left because she did did leave backto back four pins I would continue to make the move through it great so Southern needs you know if she strikes Southern only needs two pins so this match this game will go to Southern one more for Razer here in game four a southern tries to draw even in the swack championship and a nine by Razer gets it to 160 and this point Southern is looking pretty good to possibly win game four just need one pin they turn it over to their anchor who has been steady yet again good place for it after the other team already was done and you knew what you needed plenty for the win in this game and you're exactly right that's all they needed just something to get a victory here for game four and we'll see if Rogers can make this a spare picks up two and again they've got game four in their back pocket 168 to 160 and all of a sudden after Alabama State won the first two the next two have gone the way of Southern as we go to game five of the swack Bowling Championship we are dead even between the one seed Southern and the two seed Alabama State Texas and the AAL bowling campus Kelsey Quinny begins game five with a strike there you go you can hear her coach yell in the background read ball and it did I'm telling you the light hits if anyone's noticed the lights hit the light hits have carried the best we've seen a a lot of ring 10s but those swishers the 457 has been the couple of trip fours but the LI hits have have I believe carried the best a two games to nothing lead for Alabama state has been leveled out at two games a piece by Southern L oin who has thrown strikes here in the last couple of appearances steps in just leaving that seven up another great shot she has stayed in the pocket she's been carrying that light hit we just talked about it leaves the seven pin but again look at this she has been Rock Solid continuing to keep the ball in the pocket give her team the right read and oin with a shot for spare thanks for joining us here in Arlington Texas for the swack Bowling Championship the winner go to the NCA tournament Derk Jones and Carolyn Doran Ballard with you top two teams te in the swag locked into a great battle missing the spare there how did she find room for that unlike lri to miss the single pins you know she's Rock Solid on that but again you know we're talking about now they had some time off you know once once they were done bowling they had time to relax and kind of clear their mind where Southern came right into bowling for the championship right when they got done but again it's been a long weekend of bowling matches so mental fatigue does tend to set in where because that is unlike her I I'm assuming her coach is just saying look when you when you get up if you leave another spare take an extra second do a little mental imagery or take a deep breath whatever get you into the Zone take that extra second and execute Naomi Smith getting a nice bounce there on the 10 to set up an easier make of a spare Smith for spare hooked it wide and that a is a rare misstep for Naomi Smith today and I could see what she was saying she said I I think she said she moved and then I pulled it I mean which she did so she knows what she's doing which is one thing I don't think a lot of people give these athletes credit for they know their game they know what they do they feel it they it they may not explain it the the way everyone understands it but they've done this this is not new for them you know they've been on TV before bowling for a SWAT Championship they have been bowling for their conference Championship you name it they've done it so they know a lot of times what their mistakes are they just need that reassurance and and a little extra confidence to know that they can snap out of it for their next shot that's where that mental training becomes so important I I'm a I'm a big proponent for for mental training both as an individual athlete and as a team because I think you can bring both together you you're going to learn something from your individual way and add it to your team and price gets the spare she hasn't been able to pick that up on a consistent basis in the previous four games but gets one here as their teammate celebrator and now Southern will try to come up with an answer from Balden and Holden maybe not pleased with that outcome still has a chance for a spare shaking her head a little bit yeah now coming in like she has not given up the pocket either coming in just a little light I tell you I don't think she's thrown it bad I I do I mean I don't she I think she just needs a little bit of a stronger ball ball that picks up a little bit sooner just a little bit um and I think she'd be Rock Solid and balen gets the double wood and a spare great spare making the at 28 I do like what she Bulls on she comes right back puts her sweatshirt on her jacket sits sits down right in the same spot you know they could be um Superstition could yeah could be it's a little chilly in here it as I have a blanket a jacket and a pair of socks on yes I would say it's a little chilly in here ayen or gr looking for four straight strike and is unable to pick it up but a very makeable spare comes in just a little bit High leaving the 247 the athleticism of the ladies though has increased so much um over the years I mean their their fundamentals have become so much stronger and again that goes back to coaching but you know there there's so much on YouTube and Instagram and you name it you can find a video for something right um to enhance your skills or learn something uh about the sport that you L and I'm you can see it every year it just continues to get stronger and stronger using the Spare Bowl not an easy spare to make cleans it up nicely and heart Grove with that emotion coming back to the team and you know it's interesting you mentioned the the mental aspect of it this is a long season for for these players especially if you're a freshman in the case of harrove much shorter year in high school versus College oh unbelievable um as soon as we see the shot I'll expand on that and well with two more to pick up I like that shot I'd move her feet just a little bit she loves that angle good ball speed she keeps it in the pocket just make the spare um right here it's just going down the lane just a little bit too long I'd love her to parallel just like a two and two just don't nothing drastic just a two and two keep it in front of you uh the seasons are very long and I'm I'm not sure um you know when you're watching these ladies Bowl I'm not I'm not sure everybody realizes like what their schedule uh can consist of as a student athlete no matter where you're going to school it is grueling um oh and Wilson just missing a spare and that is a break yes for Alabama State I was talking talking to the Anchor bowler last year just H hits to the left of that just a little bit does not take out the second pin and she said she was in her fifth year she had a CO year and uh oh my God she said between the papers I had to write and practice and traveling she said I was exhausted and a strike grab by Alana degree Big Shot there to switch the lead in this match ball change something that goes down gets down the lane just a little bit longer a little cleaner telling you the light hits on both sides but student athletes I I you know and I can just use my daughter's example I mean you know they get one day Monday is like the recovery day and then Tuesday's workouts meeting with your your advisors and then your you know if you have a tutoring class and then you have your classes till 5:30 or 6 o'clock team dinners that it's it's crazy the schedule they keep it really is um I I admire all of them here's Rogers and Rogers with a tough spare attempt coming up with that 10 pen lurking in the back yeah and she didn't like you know she came came back and kind of shook her head a little bit you know she had gone light as well on I believe her last shot on the right lane um just getting it too far right got to keep that again that Tracer down Lane which is 10 as your gutter don't get it right up there if you do got to have just some GD on the ball some surface just to get it to read getting down there just a little too far she leaves the 2410 needs to hit to the left of the two pin and the 10 is left hanging and an open frame for southern as the lead could expand even further here in a moment for Alabama State and that's one of the things they have not done in the last two games leave those open frames that's put a lot of pressure on Alabama state but the Hornets here have an opportunity to really expand the lead with Razer yeah and both coaches and and talking to them over the years and even prior to this um you know I mentioned previous years when I would ask them in between matches you know are you going to change anything you do anything really both coaches key on the same thing it's about shot making if we do our job and we make the spare we'll win the game and you know what it's true it's not as if anybody's shooting 250 you know you don't need a seven bagger to win the match what you need is clean frames so both coaches have the same mentality yeah and Razer with a shot here at a spare to close out the fifth and she gets it Alabama state in control at the Midway point of game five we are tied two games a piece in the swack Bowling Championship Derek Jones and Carolyn Doran Bal with you Kelsey Quinny opens up with a strike Southern needs to start putting them together execution is key again we said it before the commercial break both coaches focused in on shot making and you need to start with the leadoff bowler again light hits that is a great shot you know I I listen to a lot of the younger players and of course the Rev rates especially for for the men are a astronomical these days but the the women's rev rates in two-handed bowling is coming into effect in the women's women's side of bowling but let's not forget that it's okay not to be High flush it's okay to hit light pocket and strike it looks just as pretty on the scoreboard here's LC o and oin can pick up a spare here on the next attempt she said it as soon as she let it go she said oh no so she she a little bit late on this one this is way left kind of twirled it too you know she gets on the side of it just a little bit starts to turn it just a little early but that one she really got on the side of came over the top of it and just miss left but leaves herself a makeable 36 she'll change balls and this is an important one after the strike by Quinny to start up the sixth Alabama state in the lead it's left open by o missed way left and I don't know if she looks as if she got out of it kind of quick or if she just you know the first shot it's it's kind of hard to do because if you throw your spare shot like your first shot right which some people do she overturned that first shot so again doing that with the spare bolt picked up just a little bit she misses it to the left but again we talked about possibly taking just that extra second to focus in on what needs to be done now Naomi Smith will try to capitalize so two left on the backside for Smith great form at the foul line great leverage ball goes High Le the six pin I think did she leave six 610 sorry my angle takes a practice swing while she's standing there keep that swing loose and straight and gets a spare so they take advantage of the opening left by oin and now Alabama State is in a bit of a pickle I want to go back to something you were talking about earlier with the the throwing motion do players sometimes you think suffer from trying to overthrow in frames you talked about it's you know what you want obviously is the end result oh absolutely and I do think that's where it comes into to a fact of in controlling that adrenal and and the nerves because just adrenaline itself pumps you up and you tend to get hyper and Thro a little bit harder that's you it's almost like trying too hard right you don't you don't mean to do it but that adrenaline is just is just pumping because you want it so bad which is a way that which is way more worse than not doing it correct right so that's why I talk so much now about we we just I don't think we emphasize on the mental game enough and it weighs to slow your heart rate down and and the anxiety so that you can control it just a little bit more and execute the way you want to price for spare and she gets it and you know at times I've had I've worked with some of the best Mentor coaches in Bowling um my entire career and it could be just a simple as breathing in through your nose holding it for a second or two blowing it out through your mouth and all of a sudden your shoulders relax the back of your head is relaxed and it's like oh wow okay I'm ready to go I mean just it's you know you're not trying to do 19 things before you get on the approach here's Balden and Balden has the 10 to pick up another good shot coming in half pocket leaving the pin gets that ball started coming in just half pocket gets a little on the side of it but again these are the spares should be able to cover keep those frames clean keep your team in it Holden for spare I like the Simplicity you know that's that's the other thing that I I wish you know as as women are coming up through the high school and Junior ranks high school college whatever it be is you're seeing all different styles be very um just doing the right thing and looking very good so it's not about like you said not using so so much over your upper body and you know you don't want to use muscle in Bowling you want to use your legs right so it's a great way to look oh great shot oh there you go the L tap if there's anyone in the lineup who can will a pen over it might be gr coming in half pocket but you see that pen in the gutter just tap and go she has been on a roll I'd be exhausted from doing that like I I'd be the one on the team going high fight I'd be exhausted and she she does have Limitless energy it seems like that's why they're 18 and 20 Nyla Wilson and that is open she's becoming in light in the pocket overcompensated came over the top of that one just a little bit what I think they need to do is believe in their s and and what what they can do with their game I I sometimes think we get into chatting too much about every shot and just sometimes I think you have to do what your what you yourself feel is the right move to make you know you're trying your best right but sometimes your gut tells you what it needs to be and when it comes to her her game's so simple I just I would love to just see her feet keep moving your feet keep your eyes and just keep it in front of you she has straight angles anyway Alabama State trying to keep the momentum going right now they're in a very favorable position as Alana degree steps in that time the bounce does not happen in favor of Alabama State as the 10 does not cooperate another good shot though it's all about execution keeps that ball online Wiggles two pins too hit it leaves herself the 10 pin oh wow you you could hear there in the background she knew that that was not what she wanted got a little quick was a little off balance there but she knew it when she she let it go we see Jaylen talking to herself trust the ball trust the ball and that shows you right there the max score update the difference in that Miss Right There by degree it's Rogers the anchor not necessarily a super easy spare pickup but certainly possible but we could have a tie situation so if if I were Alabama would let her finish I don't and I don't think there's any rules so I I think they're going to I would say let her finish the 10th Frame and then she will step up if she spares and strikes a strike and a spare is a winner for Alabama or a spare and a strike a win or fou here's Rogers with the spare attempt gets it so now the pressure see and did you see her what she said she said I threw it out that's where I think we you know you're you're coaching it's so hard because you're so invested in every shot they know like she knows how to bowl so she went back and looked at her I threw it out so it may be one of these where you know what you need to hit right this is where you're you're trying to go whatever she's trying to do I'm not I'm just picking numbers thir 13 to n or 14 to 9 whatever it be that one was nowhere near it so you know what take a second focus on on what you're trying to do go back to fundamentals 1 2 3 4 go Rogers gets a strike that one she looked a little tentative on she got the the the cross hit she's much more aggressive than that we saw that earlier in her matches and here's a situation for Alabama State needs to fill this 10th Frame here's Razer a strike picked [Music] up by Razer she reminded herself be up the back of it as you can see when she is up the back of it her ball reads that middle part of the lane much smoother on the back and definitely is going to carry all 10 they needed a strike or a spare they get the strike as their teammates look on rer again Razer gets nine out of 10 with the 10 pen hanging around but it's a lead for Alabama state that will push him across the finish line here in game five Razer leaves that open but the damage has been done by Alabama State 159 to 157 Victory they win game five and take a three games to two lead they can clinch the title with a win as we go to game six the question is can Alabama State join the roll call of Champions and make it a second title in three seasons they have a three games to two lead over the top seated Southern Jaguars Derek Jones and Carolyn Doran Ballard with you from Arlington Texas as Alabama State sensing victory and it will be L oin to lead it off in game six o with a strike coming back nice and calm she didn't like her last two frames that is for sure and comes out High flush that's what we call regroup tin trying to give her team some positive momentum here to start up game six and the pressure Carolyn now squarely on the shoulders of Southern absolutely whatever they discussed during this last break is all about how can we be our best best for the next 10 frames 20 with a spare opportunity Souther looking for their first swack title since 2011 they were the regular season champions quenny steps in and cannot pick up the spare that puts Southern behind the eightball here early Emily price eight out of 10 for price with a chance to spare definitely misses left of Target leaves herself easy spare and don't forget she's also a bowling with an injury yes you know that's the other thing we you know I know we touched on it but you you got to remember that on somebody especially on this team right they had three three or so uh you know injuries and you an accident and I mean my goodness just to be out there bowling is amazing Bryce gets a spare no doubt trainer Devon Cola has had her work cut out for her but she's been able to get this team up and running and right now they're in a good spot through the first two frames Amy Smith with the approach we got that 10 to fall on the back end of that setting up shop for a be lifts up on it just a little bit helps us you know and here here's where God I just love all of their games they're just they've become so athletic but right there she just used her upper body a little bit too much missed a little left and pays the price going through the nose but leaves just off the 610 Smith trying to get settled in on that grip and having some trouble it's smart to step off the approach reset get a good feel these are are important shots especially for southern you got oh spare that was a little too close for confer she's making it exciting oh my gosh just kind of pushed the pen out of the way craziness oh my gosh they have a very narrow margin for error this point down three games to two and you also know that Alabama state is going to stay hyper excited I mean they are getting into every shop just like yes and I'm going to tell you that weighs on the team that you're bowling against because you because I'm hyper anyway so it doesn't matter but you have to watch that so you know you have to put it in perspective as to what you're thinking hey I I have a job I have to do but boy I'll tell you they are pumped up Hayton har Groves nickname is Diddy and Diddy just did that we got Diddy we got Razer we got what's going on here getting confused and Balden has four to deal with on the next toss she has definitely kept the ball in play coming in just a little like got a couple of breaks this time she leaves the bucket the 245 eight and I think she left a bucket last game spared it using her strike ball to shoot at it but you definitely don't want to give away count you don't want to give away any frames did not give that one away picks up the spare a much needed one with the pressure being applied by Alabama State I have to tell you if I was bowling right now I know and people my friends who are watching this probably thinking about boy if I was bowling I would be loud right now just getting into it degree gets nine the 10th hangs around definitely got to out that one a little bit quicker than she has been but she got a break right here gets out of it right there at the foul line goes just a little high leaves the six pin now she did not her last shot but I believe the shot prior she missed a spare again this is where I would take just an extra second process everything deep breath go degree for spare and she has it and she's happy about it too as you can see early in the match Southern just down 16 every shot is crucial oh we have oh look at that Cy well if you're just joining us Alabama State said that win or lose they are going to have fun in the process no matter what and they are doing that yet again yeah yeah that's fun and they they've been having fun since uh game one frame one love it here's Nyla Wilson nla again just trying to keep it in the pocket ball not quite getting there leaving the 245 think that small parallel two and two left we've been talking about it or a ball change to something a little cleaner maybe a little more on the back end you know sometimes it is subtle the subtle things and the subtle changes that actually help you loosen up just a little bit and Wilson picks up the spare heading into action today in the average score leaders individually Wilson was the only player from Southern in the top 10 with an average score of 191 she gets a spare here to help keeper team close reminding herself to be up the back it almost looked like it was going to do one thing and ended up doing almost exactly what she wanted right she reminded her reminded herself to go up the back of it doesn't want to over rotate it she has a lot she has a lot of access rotation trying to be a little more up the back make it a little bit more smoother she got that one way right kind of fell off her shot she knew it she called it but she got lucky and left a two pin razor for spare there and she gets it I love the selft talk but keep me in it you know remind ing herself of what to do we see Jaylen doing it as well before if you can see her back is to the pins we got a look there at head coach Andrew Chapman who really has done a great job instilling the the game plan to this team and it goes back to one of your keys to Victory control what you can control and that's been a big key for them and they've been able to do that here in game here's the thing if you're if let's say you have a player and they're just a little off I mean it happens to people you some days you just have an off day hey try your best make what you leave we're not looking for you to have an eight bagger again we're saying just do your best pick up what you leave that's your job and the 10 just hanging around for Roger much much better shot loved the angle she made the move ball comes in half pocket almost leaves the 710 gets the seven out leaves the 10 see in the background there in the glasses the assistant coach for Alabama State Miranda Rimmel former player with Alabama State now a coach and I I asked her I said what was the piece of advice you learned from coach Chapman and that's where the control way you can control came from something that has lived on with the players now a big big opening left by Southern a lead for Al Alabama State it's game six of the swack Bowling Championship Alabama State the two seed taking on Southern the top seed in the swag and Alabama State one Victory away from punching their ticket to the NCAA tournament l o gets a [Applause] strike sixth frame what game is this the sixth G right yes sixth frame sixth game and she screams she's been the silent killer the whole time right two High flush shots she liked that one I'm telling you I think it's all um what's that call when you do the same thing over and over again she goes back puts her shirt on but Superstition yeah super yeah Superstition you got it Quinny answers with a strike and that is a big answer by K quinning fabulous shot by Kelsey and she has been near the pocket once she made the move left she increased her ball speed look at that didn't over rotate it it read the pattern just perfect great shot that's the Kelsey we know Emily price digs in tricky split here coming up for Emily price good shot kept it up the lane goes just a little high leaving the 49 makeable split need to you know hit to the left of the four pin slide it into the nine but very makeable now here's the key is you are on a strike though so you don't want to lose pins so I go for the one and price must have heard you got the one it's it's crunch time the game is still close I mean if you get the one if you get lucky and you make it I mean it it's great you know but that does give Southern a chance nine out of 10 for Smith and an opportunity for a spare and again they just need to be close when they get to the 10th gets it just a little Right comes in light leaves the two pin I love her ball roll though I'm going to tell you her hands way behind it it's in such a great great spot I would like to see her ball speed maybe just a little bit more again simple fix get those feet moving you know not right now I'm just saying when she goes home get those feet moving just a little bit allow her just a little bit more power behind it that's okay Smith says she's not ready that's exactly what she's supposed to do she's supposed to step off the approach and regroup start from the beginning don't blame her I mean this is this is a big opportunity here to stay even and this is this is our season it's not even for I mean just the swack Championship you then get a bit to go to the NCA finals mean this is a huge deal leaves it open a little wide you can see the frustration this game is not over this game is not over pyton Hargrove who's been excellent today that one looked a little close you and it broke a little late but got just enough to knock down seven pin got that one just a little bit further left she went a little more right to left with this ball she been keeping it not you know with staying around the eight board this one got out to about six never quite got back but leaves herself a makeable leads it open nine out of out of 10 but a lead still here for Alabama state in the eighth Southern desperately needs a strike here at some point a strike in the eighth and Ninth truly sets them up to almost you know we could have a possible tie put some pressure on the other team here's Balden and she gets a strike now look at her shouting I love it this is great little crunch time here she was sitting in the back with with I love it she means business they're saying we are not done yet and they're not mathematically this is not over Max score look still an advantage for Alabama state but got to take care of business degree fa opportunity but B hold that ball way right of her Target leaves the 57 needs to hit to the right of the head pin to slide it into seven so what he's doing here is this was something you and I talked about earlier so what they're doing is they're subbing a right-handed bowler in to shoot this spare oh because right now she'll probably get one okay this is very makeable if she hits very light to the right of the five pin slides it over into the seven she makes the spare that's that's huge but it's better for the it's easier for a right-hander to make it than a left-hander this is so they're bringing someone in I'm sorry I apologize they're bringing in some someone off the bench this is Alex Stewart a freshman out of Columbus Ohio big moment here in this match giving it a shot okay got the one it that that was no no harm no foul on that one you know because more than likely they would have gotten one either way but definitely easier for a right-hander to make it that was a smart move so Stuart getting some discussion from her coach Andrew Chapman but Southern this is a big shot yes absolutely set 10th this is LED Southern right back into this game yes and a double here makes it within I mean this is this is this is a big setup here and a strike huge shot and I want to tell you what that shot right there they are showing them we are here to be reckoned with that this is not over that was huge a monster response by Southern on the last two throws Southern now in a good position but Ken Razer cut it down and Razer will have two to deal with comes in light needs to make the spare spare strike is important and Razer leaves it open in the 10th that basically opens the door for Southern Southern now who is in Chase mode for much of this game in a tremendous position to tie this up and send it to a decisive game seven a Rogers with the delivery now some of those smiles have turned into frowns for Alabama State could have tie that is what we're looking at four open frames to finish game six and then that left the door open here for Southern and they Taken full advantage sh two and Wilson Rogers take care of business on the back end for southern as Rogers finishes up with the spare there and we are staring at a game seven but as we see and we talked about it both teams that game easy spares Miss where it it was crucial because it came down to a spare where if she had gotten one it would have been a tie that's how important the what we want to call is the makeables um are especially at this time in the game nine from Rogers but it's academic 164 to 153 win for southern that pushes it to a seventh game and now Carolyn the pressure is on not just one side but both sides well we have seen the games come down to those eighth ninth and 10th frames where marks were important setting up the the scenario of making the other team have to mark if the other team opens you need to Mark don't open and give it right back to them and right there it shows how important spares are both teams missed makeable spares where this Championship could have been over at this point I'm not saying I'm picking a team I'm just saying it it could have been over it went down head to a seventh and decisive game in the swack Championship the winner goes to the NCAA tournament it'll be L oin to start it off for the Hornets and Ste with a strike to start game seven and I don't think anybody cares at this point this game don't forget we have one team that has just continued to bowl had no breaks we have one team that had a break and they're going seven I mean this is just a long weekend no matter how you got to this Championship final but again to these now you're down to the seventh game so I know we' be going through my mind I got two shots they better be crisp yeah yeah that's the reality I mean it's each player Two Shots a piece right Kelsey Quinny and she equals it out a strike each way in game seven not one team letting down with the seventh and final game coming out swinging I love it execution Southern who has lived on the edge all day long here today I am so sorry to laugh I am looking and Southern couldn't be more laidback and quiet and and I'm not saying it's right or wrong don't they just keep singing and dancing and was it Emily price nine out of 10 for price in a very makeable spare for price price definitely needs to make the move to the left only one shot left I would move my feet just a little bit her ball is just picking up she's missing a little left needs to play it a little more um like uh Nyla is here's price that's a spare smart move five pin shooting it with their spare ball not taking any chances and if she misses left again the ball would hook I think that was a very smart move clean through two pressure slides back to Naomi Smith and Southern [Applause] nine out of 10 that was a break and then a hook back towards the middle and she picks up nine out of 10 I'll tell you I I really like the way she's playing the lane she does Miss just a little right but she really is in the right Zone she just gets it a little right but because of that slower ball speed it just barely tips that head pin leaving the seven pin you should just take her time on the spare you see more of the ladies taking more deep breaths before they're getting on the approach and while they're on the approach she's also taking a practice swing right in the nick of time for Smith I'm going to take it she was a pinch nervous on that one because she looked at it CU I could see this from the side but she flattened it out no doubt she had the spare dear she gives you a little smile I like that sigh of relief right because sometimes those shots that are flush either way those it looks easy but not necessarily easy I don't think there's anything easy when there's pressure the left team with another strike that could be one of the best shots she's thrown in the seven games perfect Hayden hardgrove excellent once more look at that finish perfect again great leverage lets the ball swing seven strikes today and trusted herself you know early on they were missing a little bit because I'm sure the nerves but wow you talk about pressure situations and coming through in the clutch Holden will have to deal with the 10 pin another fantastic shot she has been in the pocket doing what she needs to do right there comes in thought she'd kick that one out she went High flush last shot me a little bit of half pocket but come [Laughter] on you got Balon oh yes getting the nut just hey you just got to tap it you don't have to hit it right in the belly you just need to tap it right here oh yes that's why the belly of the pin is the whest just a teeny tiny tap the coach is shaking his head and scratching his head I love it that's awesome degree with a [Applause] strike clutch shot by the left-hander of course they're probably all saying themselves now why didn't we just do that every other game great shot following her other Lefty on the team team there you go and see bar Doyle is not pleased wait a minute we got him scratching his head we had the other coach scratching what's happening to the coaches Wilson oh that's a toughy she stamped her foot she did not like that shot way left of Target came around the side of that one but she leaves herself the 367 it's makeable she needs to hit to the right of the three pin slide it over into the seven I just want to compliment one more time before this ends fundamentally every single one of these players has come so far I mean I I saw some of these players when they first started and it's unbelievable the transition and again um just coaching and and just committing to the process of learning to be better not only for yourself for the team has truly shined through Wilson leaves it open in the fourth now look it's it's not over based off of what we saw in the last game 25 pin not a lot I mean not not saying that they're not going to win I'm just saying 25 pin is not a lot when it's only the fifth frame that's right Southern has dancest Dance Before they've basically been bowling since the beginning of the day here's razor nine out of 10 in the 10 pan for Razer to deal with good shot gave that ball some area which she can do great off her hand comes in just half pocket oh just a little light leaving the 10 pin and a spare for Razer pressure stays on Southern right now Southern again 24 pins is not a lot but right now would be the time to start throwing some strikes she threw two good shots putting them together you see coach he's he's going through it right now and because you know everybody talks about the players nobody thinks about the coaches like what are they going through right now you what could I have done different was the lineup right did I choose the right ball did I help them I mean they're as invested as the players are just a little slow I liked that ball on the Phil shot it was a great shot that she threw little bit slow on that shot pays the price big four get two just get two pins because we have seen right here it just goes just right through the the heart get two because we've seen how many how many games go down to that count no question oh it only gets one out of the aforementioned four Southern is down 37 at Alabama state but can they Forge a comeback for a second straight game here in game seven as we head down the home stretch of the seventh and decisive game with the swack bowler of the year starting it off a strike delivered by oin and they are doing exactly what you are supposed to do in the final match of seven games Phill frames and put pressure on your opponent four straight strikes for oin but you just hit on a key point they lost game six in part because of their inability to close things out in this stretch you saw that last game where that did occur in those last few frames this is what they needed to be doing it's not about again not about having to have the five bger just make what you leave hit the pocket and now they're doing it Kelsey Quinny coming in just hinch light close to where she's been playing just a little bit further right leaves herself to 27 talking to coach see how she wants to execute I like the spare ball kind of shoot at it where you would have the pretend four pin there in the middle and Alabama State sensing the opportunity but Southern they have not gone away all day long Quinny leaves a pen on the table and that ball actually looked like it backed up cuz it looked pretty good going at the pin it looked like she was going Cross Lane at it doing what she needed to do just a bad break it is not mathematically over yet but a double here definitely puts Alabama in the driver's seat there's Emily price that last bounce helped I'm going to tell you right now I rather shoot at this than if that pin had stood because it's very easy to chop that's spare she leaves herself the two the two the 247 so again a makeable take your time you see the coach going over I mean this is this is crunch time so these L three frames I'm sure you're going to see the coach and everybody's ear and this is closing time here for both teams rice for spare money huge spare I think she thought it might hook a little bit there stayed right on target again filling frame they are in control of this match don't do anything detrimental you're making the other team perform that's what it's all about that's what fresher is all about southern was able to do that in the last game can they do it again tough followup here for Smith this is this is just I mean it looked pretty good just a little high needed to make that move I think I I believe both teams were just trying to play that that look of that further right around that eight 910 area just a little bit too long where the shift needed to be parallel in but she made a good try at it made the move off her last shot just paid full penalty she had a crack at that but only able to get two as we go to the eighth and they lead for Alabama State expanding and here's here's one of today's Heroes for Alabama State freshman little bit of a Mis step there yeah and from this angle it it looked pretty good but of course we're off to the side so to see up the lane is a little tough she seemed to like it she stayed with it HS right through the nose Lees a Greek Church she's going to go for the three how would you approach this one get three get count yeah you're not going to make this oh and she doesn't get any okay here's here's the scenario I'm going to try to add fast but this just the way it is we can see Max square if we need to so basically Southern has to strike out they strike out they shoot 179 okay we get some Max score up there they shoot 179 okay that would force Alabama to Mark in the next two frames so this is an important shot they have to strike out this is where we're at and Balden start to climb back and this is so just left one and even something like that that makes it exponentially tougher not mathematically over she needs to make the spare and Bon picks up the spare Balden has been a steadying influence for southern can they find enough traction here to make a run late anywhere El how about Alabama State here from the standpoint of you know complacency letting down a little bit how do you fight that off you know obviously they're not doing it on purpose but it has to be in their mind that it happened the last game and again not not mathematically over a count is Big um and and making a Mark here's degree and a strike degree senses that the championship is in sight excellent shot she made some great shots these last couple of games I know she missed a few spares but her shot making when she needed it in the pocket excellent setting up that 10th Frame and basically shutting down the match Wilson has the 10 pin as you see the max score there for Alabama State 209 and they have just continued to apply pressure to Southern here in the 7th game Wilson gets the spare but now it has come down to the 10th and final players on both both sides starting to become overcome with emotion Razer almost got a strike there but a spare attempt on the way and you can see the emotion that these players are going through Razer the tear rolling down her face before that last throw because this is essentially an insurmountable situation Razer upset able to spare out a strike thrown by Rogers and a long forward battle this team I mean they came through and they need to and let me here's the other thing they took everybody seven games I mean their last match seven games close matches by like two and three pins took Alabama seven games I mean come on that's great bowling by both teams they made shots and and started to fill frames when they had to they this is not the last time we will see either team in this championship match Rogers with two more with what will be the final throw of the matches Alabama State closing in on the title [Music] Rogers picks up the spare but Alabama state has won the swack Championship the Alabama State Hornets are the 2024 champions of the swag
