hey guys so today I'm going to show you how to build a primitive fishing rig we're gonna catch some fish do some forging and then cook it all over a campfire in such a way that you've never seen before it's gonna take some time so let's get started how far a fishing line we're gonna be using yucca leaf now we only need one and this will take some time to actually process down for our pole we're going to be using Spanish Buckeye it's green it's flexible the branches are quite long which means that we're not gonna have to make as much fishing line and that'll save a lot of time [Applause] that'll work now for our hook we're gonna use a Gavi spine you can make a gourd chuck out of quite a few things for durability and look I prefer a gobby spine this is the part that can take a little bit of time we've got to build our line and make the idea is you want to break down these fibers until you have the individual strands once your leaf begins to fray really well I'm gonna start splitting it off near the tip you want to run that from tip to base split the leaf run the fibers all the way out that way you have longer fibers if you ever gonna break you can really process one of these leaves quickly this way we're now at the point where we can start taking off individual strands separate a few pull them all the way down to the tip Braham out smaller's better start braiding our line together now to get our mainline started go with three strands at first put those together fold them over just like that and we're gonna be making what's called a two strand twist so I want to go ahead and twist the pieces closest to me in words throw over that far portion and that now makes it the closest piece again twist in fold over twist in fold over just like that this is what we're making now when your line starts to thin out just a little bit when you're coming to the end your strands of yucca to extend your rope I've got to do is find another piece another strand situate that right there in the middle one parts going off onto each of the legs and you'll just twist them right in there that will integrate in and allow you to continue making your line longer Noble now we're coming to the end of the yucca that we processed go ahead and tie it off and that should be the end of our mainline all I got to do now is build a hook and a leader for those hooks now for our hook I'm gonna Whittle it down a little bit and then we'll use this rock back behind us to kind of sand it down go ahead and use a rough rock start standing this gorge hook into shape let's take a little while there you go besides this couch shook there's no way to fix that to the larger line that we just braided so what I'll be using is a single strand it's gonna be effectively a leader I could tie that on it makes it really easy to fix this under the larger line as well so if you need to change out hooks you lose something things break gives you a lot more flexibility it's going to attach our leader and hook to our mainline and I'll do that by tying an overhand on a bite onto our leader give me a nice simple loop like that I'll then feed that loop through the loop that we have on the mainline and you'll always get this natural loop whenever you're making this cordage feed the leader through we're just going to be making a larks head and what this allows you to do is remove your hooks change them out do repairs and like a swivel just like that our hook and line look to be done and pull those up we'll attach these to the pole once we get to our fishing area all we have left now find a few worms and hopefully get on some fish what seems to think this is good a spot as any just to cool down the water we've got a little bit of time to rig up our poll okay the fish will relax and actually catch something now in most cases I would want to have enough line to go ahead and tie off here at the end of the pole and run this line all the way back the handle just in case the branch was to break a big fish gets on there that's always a concern but here in this Creek I know my waters and it actually went drive out six months ago so I know what size creature is in here and that gives me a little bit of leeway so check your line you have to wet it down rinse it off a little bit just time to go ahead and put our worm on there see if we can't get some fish hook Hey yeah the water hook come on gotta catch supper thank you go find you some baits on I'm gonna taste or look get awake in the water anyway alright ok I'll take him really kill cichlid so this is a cichlid also known as a rio grande perched down here in Texas how they get quite a bit larger than this not so much in this Creek but pretty good fish to have tastes really good kind of an analogue - lugia let's get this hook out let him go and hopefully we'll get some larger ones one thing about using gourd chokes it's really hard to get them out once they get them stuck down in there alright baits on see if we can do a little bit better without too many more these fish it's gone and you're gorgeous really don't have to be as sharp as I've made them that's just something I like to do it can work against you get a lot of times the sharp gourd jokes are not going to go all the way down the throat but if you put the worm on just right you can cover that over and they'll swallow the whole thing and that worked out real well the trick debating a Gorger is getting those sharp tips covered up you want it so the fish swallows it and nothing catches you're stripping the bait pretty fast now and go ahead and move on down Creek seems like there's just little guys left in this pool see if we can get some luck this is a sunfish guys it might not seem like much of a fish but for this Creek he's pretty good size this thing goes dry every once in a while so we'll go ahead and put this one sack and be part of scepter tonight king of this pool check out the size that guy that's what's been taking all of my bait monster biggest one yet these bulls are full of crawdads the raccoons know they're in here they make meals out of them regularly another keeper sick with hairy fish beautiful fish looking to get a meal he's small he's got chicks being this sharp almost half maybe over half at the fish we caught today I've actually been snagged in their mouth instead of in their stomach which is pretty amazing it's not standard at all still I choose a modern hook over this any day good down the dog have you few things you have to watch your back against there we go check that out Lou Gill will keep him that was easy [Applause] there's a lot of competition out here come on discrete cheers again hungry that was abandoned water snake I'm real hungry well six fish is gonna have to be enough for today after all we put this line through that snake dangling there on that sunfish was just enough weight to snap our hook off our line so without a hook there's no more fishing it's time to do some foraging get the camp fire stoked up and get to cooking alright so check out today's catch fresh fish and normally go ahead and leave these guys in this water keep them fresh keep them alive until we're ready to cook there are so many snakes out here in this water right now that imagine if I left it for any amount of time I'd come back to an empty sack and no fish at all so we go ahead and dispatch these and scale them and take them with us after we scaled these fish what we've done is clip here under the jaw line so we can reach back inside into this internal cavity pull out all the intestines the guts thing is you definitely don't want to cook up inside the fish and normally if you're preparing fish you'll be splitting the belly open all the way back to this hole open that up pull everything out clean the fish out we want to keep this body cavity intact because we're going to be foraging and putting some of the vegetables inside of that as we cook it which will enhance the flavor of the fish and cook the vegetables up real nice we're also leaving the head on here because that's going to help us out with positioning our fish over the fire this is young briar vine now it gets much longer much meaner than this but this young chute right here we can pull this off of the older bonds as well and you come up all the way to the end and the new shoots are the important part so squeeze pull and you want to take that tip off there and that is delicious just like green beans let's get some more this is mature borrow vine this is what most people have to tangle with now check out those thorns it doesn't break very easy trips you up real bad fortunately at the very top of this where this bond is still growing I'm gonna find those tender shoots so it's a pain it'll hurt you at least you can eat it if you have to now this time of year with everything getting green and growing up would be pretty hard to find wild onion what you're looking for are these seed clusters now we're just gonna be taking the top of the plant I'm actually gonna dig them out to see clusters see them out you don't need those all that plants on down right there and by taking the stem stalks and leaves the rest of plant gets to live down there you'll come back up and we get a tasty treat awesome good smell that's almost always prickly pear season here in Texas but it's a special time of year and the blossoms are actually coming out and these are edible so pretty fantastic fresh I like rose petals what we're after right now is going to be the tunas the fruits and usually when you see people picking these they're going to be pink purple very very sweet the concern here is that you would need to make sure that you're not gonna get thorns and you thorns are called blockades we're picking these before they are ripe and we'll be cooking them over the fire and these are spectacular now we're not gonna be sweet but they taste like cucumber kind of like an okra pretty fantastic so little fruits here let's twist them off and it's gonna take some fire to go ahead and burn those gloves off can be pretty nasty check out those fruits it's been a long day you know fire started Brett time to go ahead and get our fish prepped got our onions we've got our briar vine tips from this past season dehydrated slide a little bit of spice are several chili Bateen peppers and go ahead and fill the body cavities of our fish up with these three things we've got off to a good start all right just take a bit of onion over a little bit of everything step it inside that body cavity don't have to look pretty this has to work chill teens let's crush them don't powder be a pretty good spicy kick time to go ahead and screw up our fish go in through the mouth all the way down the body cavity and it should come out near the tail just like that now between each of these fish we're to get multiple fish on each skewer go ahead and put one of these tunas on it and that way it can bake and the thorns that are on it will burn off as well as a result just like that there's one nice fish looks good puppies overheat getting started picking good cause wish I could smell this that sizzling sound like fish cooking like a once in a while get a drop of oil that's the fat but you're gonna get out of the fish game that's flavor we've been turning these fish every once in a while tell they're golden-brown my road you some more time but the back road looks to be done well guys it has been an extremely long day but it's now time for us to go ahead and taste the fruits of our Labor's and see how we've done they definitely feel and smell cooked definitely onion some good whitefish smell all right now these were not filleted full fish would have to go ahead and open them up and pick through the bones with small fish it's just part of the process [Music] that blush hoop cage comes right apart Andres kitty cichlid and bluegill cook this way is like the bacon of the sea with the skin on there's nothing better show y'all the vegetables inside and some of that beautifully cooked white meat lots of little bones and these small fish I don't want you get past them cuz your vegetables steamed inside of the fish you just find the meat where you can pick around the bones it's like asparagus can't really taste the onions but that green bar a little bit of fish juices sauteed asparagus all right try this okay okay so check out this unripened cactus tuna most folks see these once they become very sugary and sweet and get that beautiful red pink purple color to him but cooked it was better than okra if you have never tried this before you are missing out hmm that is fantastic you could make an entire meal out of these just by themselves a lot of folks a few folks probably gonna go ahead and call me and ask about how small these fish are again if you caught it this is our Creek and we know these waters well they actually go dry every other year sorry fish that is in this Creek is subject to not being there at some point the next 24 months and it happens regularly it's a sad thing when it does but in that way it's reborn every other year as well so new things come and take over new life response and then we get to enjoy it in this way and that's really awesome now one last thing I wanted to mention is that with all these little bones and you're always gonna have these leftovers after out here several nights especially be surviving go ahead and throw these in a stew pot and cook them down make yourself a fish soup hmm those needs to be said it needs to be understood well this has been an extremely long day and the idea that somebody's gonna go out in the woods out in the wilds find the necessary resources collect them process them build a fishing rig and actually have success a stream a creek grabber Lake you name it is idealistic to say the least it takes a fair bit of practice skill knowing your surroundings and quite frankly look how these gorgeous these are great to know how to make practice it try it out the old ways are pretty amazing but there's a reason that Walmart doesn't have these on the shelves they're fishing Island because modern hooks have passed these by if you're gonna be out in the wilds you need to be prepared now what I wear and I'm not getting paid to actually show this to you it's made by outdoor element it's called a Kodiak it's got about 30 foot of fishing line in it and several modern hooks fire starter all kinds that are stuff in there also you might have noticed on my necklace I've got a flat plate this is made by Grimm survival and they've got several new styles it has several modern hooks in it pop right of the plate and soon to be on Huck's collar is a dog tag also made by Grimm survival with all kinds of cool gigs jigs and hooks that pop out extremely handy always there okay and again they're not paying me to show you this even my walking stick I'll always have with me has upwards of thirty foot a fishing line and several modern hooks in it and you should see a theme take a page out of the Boy Scouts be prepared me out there because I might have gotten six fish today given any of these within a quarter the time I could add six-fold as many guys thank you for watching please like subscribe comment tell me what you think share the heck out of this video and always until next time hey go okay there you go better eat that everybody on YouTube is judging me because you're a picky eater or I'm a really lousy cook you
