This is so cool. I really took for granted how flat surfaces are made until I started sharpening tools. I had to find a flat reference surface.

hey guys what about ox tools on top so we'll get a kind of a special treat here for you today I made a call to precision granite and they're at Southern California outfit actually they're not far from standard granted anyway I inquired about having them recalibrate my surface plates and resurface them in the field if necessary and so there are Southern California outfit but they do operate in Northern California so just to my surprise they had a crew up this way and they're able to come and serve as my plates they're going to come here in about an hour and take a look at my plates they're going to use an auto collimator and they're going to map the plates and measure them and see what kind of condition they're in I was doing a some action some very fussy measurements and I was having trouble getting consistent readings on one of my plates and I've had this thought on that particular plate before that it's got a problem so I moved over onto my real good plate or what I think is my really good plate and my readings got very consistent at that point so so we're going to see we're going to see just how bad that one plate is and and they're going to they'll be able to in the field resurface those and recondition those and bring them into in the specification so I'm stoked this I would be pretty cool and it's not particularly expensive and you know it's not a not a bad idea if you have a used plate so at least you know it's one of your primary shop references so well it's it's a nice a it's nice to know what kind of shape is and where the other okay hey so uh I'm gonna get all set up here and these guys are show up and then I hope I can shoot some video for you guys okay so let's do it all right we got the guys from precision granting out here they're doing their first pass over here and cleaning yeah as usual is important right very cool the Ron rapido meter I thought we'd see one of these reasonable 20 minutes in Decatur yeah so first I expect a zero on line three that's normally the flat slide on your surface plate line three is averages this line goes through the long axis correct one two three four five and six seven eight it's across your okay so the edges are where you usually see all your where it depends if you have it normally right here right see the motion but it depends if somebody has a fixture over here and they're working it's different for every plate so far this hasn't been done since that Wow now this is was a base of some kooky way for inspection machine or whatever and I looked at the tag it's pretty nutty a peg and as far as what he ain't I could check optically was not a collimator but as far as where people and I think you have a surface it's doubly okay forty million I'm just going to check the flood with forty million total reading total that's certain saturation to repeat reading that's not class that's just the surface act for sure but I'm holding warning because all that does is find a little hoisin love it right yeah doesn't total flatness at all I could be fruity thousands have flatus right but it's your only to the flats of the plate got it I wish finals so the the same old final tours okay it was twenty two million sorry usually I go plus or minus over this yeah then plus or minus twenty two million okay said your forty million sorry yeah okay out so this this is about almost thirty years old and it was the same that's been taken care of I saw you have it covered and it makes a huge difference yeah the hippos are going to sit you know Granite's pretty stable right you don't there's abrasives in the air oh yeah this place is pretty dusty yeah I used to use the the starett a plate cleaner until I found you guys and stuff yeah with it's got a little lanolin in it or something like our and it's so nice guy the gauges go we may be the one customer joking around and saying oh yeah look if you went like this and she went right off the tape oh yeah right that way all right so they're setting up the autocollimator now now will I get one of those cool little trippy 3d maps out of this the one of my brain at the time actually graphic by n this is not to tell you from the 40s Oh back at our shop we have the lasers in Froggers but oh I prefer this so much more I think this is more accurate there's no warmup I need it mm-hmm no what I meant was that sometimes you can you generate like a little 3d map okay right okay because that shows you kind of graphically what's going on in now who makes this one that's Booker Watts name with an under watch yeah that's cool so I'm using a simple mag light to power back into me they have big big power Pat's anything yeah and that weird light bulbs and stuff not exactly perfect yeah I'll let you look at your - Oh like I said this technology's from the authorities but it might thing you can't beat it ya know I have some Holger watts instruments myself it's nice stuff man go ahead and look in there you're going to see the number five on the right hand side I'm a bold line below that and another bold line below that you're looking at the lowest bold line and it might not be a focus for your eyes that's focus for mine Louis if you spend that guy you can look in there if you still have started you'll see crosshair moving and you can spin it aggressively it's okay see their seat stylish crosshair centered on that line yeah on the bold line on the bottom bold line so you want the bottle bovine in the middle of the crosshairs okay so what what is the scale what is the scale this shoots down to a quarter arc second which on a five inch meter one our second is so it's a quarter of 25 million so what is that about it about five minutes okay and I'll let you looking here right now okay perfect go ahead so this is reading angular measure yep so go ahead look in there you'll see so change it went down I'm going I get minus 1 CL but a little lower and I'll show you how I get that I I know because I know yes sure yeah I'm not familiar with your readings here with a minus 1 C up a bit whatever I did it it probably went down he is that was your entire plate so I can look and see how much it is but come back it's nice I can already see right away sighs glad to hear it okay I suspected this is my best plate so okay okay I get minus 1 0 plus once that's - 5 million 0 plus 5 minutes so this plate was variance well you guys made it a long time we go for years before I was even born really ok I can't take better sort well I think they did an 83 nose 89 mmm you see this once I do go ahead ok ok ok set a plus or so so so far I see I have to check all idiot lines look like I'm guaranteed seeing double a so far excellent the way my spell is working it's one tenth of 1000s in a square so that line too which is normally the worst line since the longest diagonal ok that's I'm getting 50 millions on that line lovely over the length right if entire line up from Center out here good ok ok that might be a little so that's why I have my 90 degree a keys yeah you can rotate it you can squeeze in over there okay okay oh I see you just you're doing it graphically on my regret paper yeah okay okay okay that's I won't even flag oh really zero plus one zero but if you're seeing air on that one but I'm going to do is I use this as a transfer gauge if that one's a little too smaller than my oughta call later on up there hmm so what I do is once I've checked flats I know I can zero in that line and I use my repeat gauge as a transfer game so not only will let me repeat a zero it on to zero flatness it'll show me flatness as well okay okay okay okay you knew this was gonna be this good no uh-huh okay I suspected it was good but I didn't know how good so yes okay okay okay this is called the Union Jack method of shooting this all lines this is a fence that requires work the first time you check a plate if I do this plate again next year hmm I could do to the keys which is just the outer perimeter lines okay so that's two three four seven but for the first time checking a plate this is recalibration though exactly that's after when I came back in a year really not that you need it I'm saying about my normal customers I take care of I know that the plates balance but I have to balance it the first time to make sure no totally understand but I would know next time I do this plate I would know how great it is so I could do it okay okay okay the good thing is you see how the contour is a little concave a little bit concave and a cinnamon that's good it's cold right now in the Homer it's gonna look like that because for another granites staple it changes with temperature so right now you're looking at about 70 millions concave in the winter and I bet you'd be about 50 to 60 million Scott I'm sorry convex concave in the in the winter it's gonna be 50 to 60 con concave rather had in mind right there Inessa by your patents not only do you have good flattens it's in the right direction even if you were perfect 50 millions you still be within spec but it's cold Oh another yeah it isn't gonna cool that's something I think it's that 61 on the plate yeah oh did you put a temperature yeah yeah surface temperature oh oh that yeah humidity but that's up calibration that's more for my use oh okay it's tones this it could be 70 sure but you didn't have a heater on last night's of the stone to be 50 right or there's some machine that sits next to little toggle the timer said no high beneath that last three years hmm it's been a really good addition for me because my laughing equipment Mike if my lap equipment was 60 and your plates 70 right tweak it so I heard normalizable some people do here yeah who would have guessed right okay come over a little bit okay this little tick I'll go ahead and angle it's really hard to find the 90-degree eyepiece for the home really which is just a straight I sure I never in a million years contort my body being the Hunnic so these are really hard to find I left out yeah okay okay let's resources with the standard tripping on the bottom so I'm gonna check my balance but I can already see the overall flatness of this plate is under 70 millions excellent that's no way so what I did on this plate is I calibrated your your master three by four founded within 50 million norm flatness so I'm able to zero my repeat gauge on see that surface plate there's no holes in it from the reading was great and the flatness is dead-on so so now you can you just transfer that reading of the United rรกpido meter right and that exactly I couldn't just set this up zero it and no because this is an unknown surface in Huntington surface but now that I check that you can see the flatness and I can't receive you can see there's definitely a hole in it oh yeah and you can choose to test and it's my zero but where's the hole is it right in here it is it's best that one of the holes oh right here this is where I'm finding the most where okay so it's not that bad oh it was the side that was this it was like this right so that was the side that was an axe that whoa how is it a grave right in here the hole follows all the way right here okay interest and it's a trough and almost nothing back here so we'll start laughing it's gonna be a little hard to see the hole in it because the Sun uh-huh but when we start we have you get down low are you able to see that one that's the one I used sandpaper on I mean it's bad it's 4/10 oh really why this is dead-on okay so that one's actually out of spec oh yeah yeah this one is - okay right in this area I'm finding the most in the corner and section measuring right there so that would be this area right here oh so the way so the way I understand this thing this is this is simulating a high pH okay so this would be your base and this would mean your arm extending out right but this part is separate correct right here that you see the line it's right here barely connected it held out my arms so your reading is here so it's comparing from this side aside this side right that was following the whole because it smells like slate okay but correct see if you look right in there see it's falling away it's just worn out easy to fix cool very easy to fix are you wanting to fix this one - yeah sure so this is a two-faced surface plate what I do were a laughing place my modern face is my roughest darkest tones on music diner just a cow or a flower or without a diamond this is a 60 micron okay very aggressive at 60 microns for you bringing on an 80 micron - and I go all the way down to 1 micron guy okay this is aggressive what we're going to do is wrap it in here I'm going to put that one over here - and then use our finishing flap excellent okay so you're just floating now you're not pushing down at all it's just the way to the lab right yeah we're gonna use our yeah Wow okay yeah my last little wool I don't want to make the pipes what we're gonna do I'm gonna cut that one up here and turn it upside down or maintain platter just get a little dining this one oh that's tough is mode tough like aluminum and this is one of the hardest granite this is Minnesota uh-huh how do you heart you can just go by like I do it every day so that's a cabin Academy where's it from a captain's vicinity area oh really okay thank you cool well represented for a teleport you are the white granite also puts for the assuming area but this has really difficult for us to work with great for you great for you it wears out very slow but the difference between this minimum I want to get a little diamond so as you perform finish mmm my life sitting on that cart Street the flats on my life is perfect but I need to set up on a perfect surface so I want to know you so before I finish this one I'm going to set them up here and then turn this place upside down and lap it on top of it that's really the easiest way so now perfect surface or finger that am I getting up on there we get another card snow good and I and I would never finish this and then do this because the customer would say hey you just finished this Triple A and now you're putting a lap up on it so the only time I do this is when this isn't finished not that it would do anything but when it loses when I see it I see it I'm your old heart this grandpa's the big that will come out oh yeah yes you go where else the next plate we're doing 15 foot by 15 what's up verdice and uh it's not gonna be able but this looks like a $50,000 oh yeah no I'm not gonna say that have to beat home we'd be up there too much oh yeah but I cook like this yeah ones that you can handle by hand writes to a happy thick yeah squeegees and brooms and stuff yeah just what we cleaned our big one and at work you know and it takes you 45 minutes to clean the damn thing right yeah Maseo on my part carry flat this bar okay old drop after this through this change of temperature also again it's small too right so that's good it changes less but what ideas I hope I also check this so I checked your plate not only mastered that one I checked this one too so now I know this is also alive okay believe it or not the small plates the size Harborview for me then this size that size and bigger keys instead of real a few mean no no just to maintain glasses on though something so small it's really easy to make it go convex because it's so small your laps overhanging this size a little bit tricky okay so he nailed it remember that three tips hole in it before yeah no I saw it OOP that I just wanna fade but dead zeroes are twenty millions to their divisions correct so you're looking right number two laser tents and we're looking at twenty million so this is a master now so this is also double like lovely it was tool room that's not stubble and I can certify it lower I don't have to certified laboratory find that whatever I mean I'll have you guys back out you know I still like having one that they dedicate to using the sandpaper and well like that it's free to calibrate to integrate but resurfacing as different costs so they charge a little bit more for no way so if you don't need double a just having certified to a or a or b oh and you know it's double a's just the my laps are so good I can't make it right oops sorry yeah I had that one lady I went in resurfaced for plate I was one a grade B and I was saying oh no I got it - mm she goes no I don't want EE I want gravy and I said well I'm gonna tighten gravy but it's closer my foot and she was but she says no I want this gravy she wasn't the other thing bothers me I said little to take a piece of sandpaper your plate she was most definitely to humidity fun it just goes against the grain so to speak you just want understanding yeah you know you want closer sure very little but what he's doing here Oh image is playing here I choose videos and I work on things that I like to work on my little hobby what do you do when you're not doing this right my focus oh yeah horse is really okay excellent yeah yeah that's my coffee oh yeah no that's great I know that horses yeah have you met Stan that came he came down to Sanders and interviewed Mike at standards he has a used to have horses and he lives down there and Rancho Cucamonga oh yeah yeah he had a bunch of horses as biggle or two he says such CD I'm not on a horse technology okay so Sam is saying he is a my horse was the 18 hand song I go yeah - what and he goes okay you don't know anything about horses right I go yeah you're right I guess that's a big horse right yeah okay his lions yeah that's cool right horses or horses or need yeah that's that's quick man it's all yeah no normally would it be gay is not what I'm bugging you guys are not asking questions instead don't ask me to quest now this it's cool and that the yeah when you said oh yeah oh we're just going to go do a quick plate and come over to your place I'm like really okay all right you know I just had this envision you know you're over here so I need check you know and it's sometimes but the place we did before you they had a two foot by three bush man the bigger this one in and five eight five g's and we're almost already worked from the wrinkled-up just bang them out yeah like I said I love this would just want me out of the way you know understand tolerance no this is all this stuff is fascinating to me you know this is this is such an important tool in the shop here would I be funny it's your it's your primary reference so you got this and you got some decent gauge blocks and even you own the world man I literally you know like 50 60 millions hi you don't forget yeah a little oh maybe take a small ap1 fraction so we're going to this and how do you recondition your labs there self correcting them right maybe might put them better in the year for the best okay if you're at your place with real I have equipment in the band I actually have a goal for you guys yeah okay is a break you know give a great soul right now I know you might be better than a year ago yes laughing and honing our winnings corrective process a self correct and if you're doing it right right right yeah can I do it again instruct where is this balloon up so you got to tell me about this little wheel over here that's the one that's gotta be cured oh good evening with favorite eating flatus call out for ya but you gotta take ahold of the rest of the bodies down to get that little spot yeah that's amazing you can see them in it is no one guess to make this safe a little bit better good thing you're crippling great oh really good laboratory or what is it papa oh no kidding either making the best bet bolstering cow houses so we created a flat half laboratory that one is it are you good oh you need want one good one too round so everything's gonna be this book I'm coming if he's done you saw oh this one's this thing it it's very cool you don't want your catcher you want you know I don't care yeah you want us plain my sure what grades I won wow we're going to on a to EE on which one are these laws oh um a is fine yeah he's already doable okay perfect good twist my or a fish my arm come look take a look at it now oh sweet okay beautiful yeah you have a twenty times yeah or here so I'll get this one written have some you want these at eight that's fine yeah but you know they're double eight insider it's okay yeah a little little overhead there that's we call that normally the way I work is if you ask for a I'm a double a yes for a double a maker play I don't believe a nap well and I read that it you know and I think you and I talked on the phone at one point and we were talking about angle blocks or parallels or something like that and you need if you certify them that there are plus or minus a tenth they're really actually fifty millions right and you're you're better than that so you you don't want somebody in the field measuring this and going hey man you're you're close here or you're over okay you know some come in behind me today and next is what tech did this they're probably not even alive do you know exactly that that whoever did that I say they didn't even go right that was pretty cool watching those guys do that oh what amazed me was the simplicity of the tools that he is and you know these flat laps and this for Peeta meter and then the autocollimator so these are relatively simple tools and they were able to just do this very highly accurate work in the field and the other thing that amazed me was how fast it was and you know I probably slowed him down like twice yapping at him and talking to him and asking them questions and stuff like that but these guys are professionals and they probably would have completed the the three plates that I had them do in an hour or maybe a little bit more so that was what was surprising to me so that was pretty cool so precision granite and Standridge are really one company they kind of operate independently a little bit but they share resources and they actually take my my plate stand which so you can call either one I think they're interchangeable so the price lists are the same all that stuff so if you have a granted plate that you're not sure about call these guys up and maybe you can get on their schedule to get resurface or recertified and I had two thumbs up it was fun it was fun and and to watch these guys operate and use some of those cool tools so thanks for watching guys and you know keep your plates flat talk to you later
