You can see the tires skipping on the dyno. You're supposed to be on the back of the rollers, not the front. I thought that was common knowledge.

[Music] the day has finally come to get a barbie jeep on a dyno we've been waiting to do this also it's the first thing we've ever had on a dyno so that's exciting yeah we've been waiting to dyno this since literally since we built it and uh we finally found a place actually locally in town to do it we're at uh whiskey customs and he's gonna help us dino it and now that it's supercharged we'll get to see how much power we're [Music] making so what's the first step of the process well this is a little different than uh what we normally put on dyno here and so i've kind of gotta make some adjustments to try and get this thing so the axle is uh centered on the roller there and that we can get it strapped down safely so it doesn't go anywhere that should work i think yep go grab some straps well we're strapping it down and i realized to start it we have to turn the steering wheel to the right so we can get to the kickstarter well it's kind of strapped down now so i gotta detach it and then uh we'll be in business [Music] we gotta fill out the dyno waiver which is essentially uh if it blows up it's not their fault and that would be accurate uh but we've got to put in the year making model so let's see what year uh we started building it in 2018 we'll call it a 2018. grab something that requested um i'll just put eat this is just the uh to get the spark plug signal so the computer knows the rpm right yeah cool um yeah so time to see if it'll start go ahead and put the ear plugs in preemptively it's not quiet do [Music] so so so yeah it's getting warm oh yeah it gets warm pretty quick especially without much airflow and 98 degrees yeah and i mean i can try and point the fans at it it certainly won't hurt yeah this means stop that's the most important one right right it's basically this and this and that we're good go stop all right so [Music] the reason it's burning so much oil is because the over the crankcase vent jumps into the carburetor so it dumps a bit a bit of oil down there well that was fun yeah well it looks weird yeah that doesn't look like any dino curtain i've ever seen no and so i think it's having a hard time reading the spark um so we're going to try something a little different here okay or 3956 pounds yeah i like that number 0.19 rpm i don't think that's accurate [Laughter] that was when i kickstarted it i just kicked it at 3 000 foot pounds of torque i mean you've got a nice legs yeah um i don't know horsepower wise it's saying between 32 and 37. i i know that a while back we upgraded the dyno to win pep8 and the new dynaware rt and our dyno got a little stingy we lost somewhere between five and eight horsepower on the new system um i know there's a bearing that's not the happiest that's worth a couple of horsepower so i mean well i mean we've got drivetrain loss and right and i would guess if that number i mean if that number is accurate the the 37 number knowing what i know about the dyno probably puts us closer to 40 45 yeah um and i have no idea what this thing is what this engine's rated at but that's at the crank in a dirty dirt bike yeah so a little more chain than that now and probably a little more parasitic loss two chains so a lot more loss there it was running at 15 psi though so that's a chunk yeah that's that's really uh hilarious that it actually is running about where it should because that's a volkswagen vw bus carburetor right so what were they 1600 cc yep so 450 with 15 pounds of boost that's probably about accurate and that's just the chopsticks payment with it too yeah just slapped it on there and that's that's pretty wild that it works that well i mean because for the bulk of your your power man man it's 13 5 to 12 ish the that's ridiculous but it's that close the cycle time on this thing's so short it's hard to get a really good um that's why i had to go up to fifth right because we weren't anywhere close to worrying about speed on the tires yet right yeah and uh but this thing just revs out so fast the longer you can keep that time the more accurate sample you get on the air fuel ratio yeah but all in all um you know i say we try and get a pull that that maybe makes sense yeah and uh see what happens yeah for sure we got a uh empty gatorade bottle doing the trick as the uh crankcase breather catch can so uh i think it's time to start it up and give it another another run [Applause] hey we blew it up well that was a distinct possibility and uh i'd say that was catastrophic engine failure did sound like it i don't see any oil spewing out yet surprisingly i don't either but uh it didn't sound good it sure sounded like catastrophic engine failure or uh sudden unintentional disassembly as they say it made 37 horsepower before it did that well that's cool on a fairly reasonable chart [Laughter] with some random squiggles well the the squiggles are i think indicative of how it builds boost yeah because it looks like it kind of comes on easy and then shoots up so i don't know if maybe we get a little bit of wheel speed when it comes or will spin when it comes on um but this part of the chart if we look at it so here's our our random disassembly yeah i know the sensor is turned off we're not worried about sensors we're looking at the graph or the graph like substance um but so i think maybe we got a little wheel spin or a clutch slip or something right as it starts to build a boost because if we kind of look at the chart from there over that looks fairly normal right um and then we get whatever whatever that was yeah um yeah and so i this is uh kind of a miss down at the bottom and so what happens when the when the motor chugs real hard it gets a moment where it really acts like it's going somewhere because it's slack to tight um so dynos are kind of weird everybody has a different understanding of how they work and really what the deal is horsepower doesn't exist horsepower is a myth it's torque times rpm times 0.076 so what a dyno does is it times the acceleration of a known mass so this known mass hits x number of rpm in y time it does an equation longer than my arm and says here's your torque here's your horsepower so yeah mechanically it's it's easy to fool it a little bit so those those ticks like that are from that that miss down low right well in that last poll i think i was holding it at lower rpm yeah and this thing well now it doesn't run any at all anymore but when it was running with the supercharger if you just like if it had been idling for a bit and you whacked the throttle open it goes and just dies and then you give it a little bit of a tap and it comes back on so that might have been our our that spike there and then once it was uh yeah i would be willing to bet that either the clutch slipped um because it has a recluse auto clutch in it so the clutch probably slipped there for a second or the tires i mean right there's not a whole lot of weight on there kind of surprised everything held together yeah it doesn't turn over anymore so oh it's definitely blowing up i mean that sounded that was a solid i'm just disappointed that nothing came out of the engine honestly for that much explosion yeah it was an instant boom just yeah it uh the joys of forced induction oh yeah especially on an already high compression engine we've been talking about this thing blowing up for years and it never has until today i mean if it was going to blow up this is the perfect time for it to blow up and uh i remember when we first started building this a lot of people had comments about this engine being like unreliable and prone to blowing up and we found the exact opposite to be true because we ran it without any coolant and with a blown head gasket for like hours many many hours and uh like the whole time it was in moab it was overheating the head gasket was blown the whole time and uh it's never had adequate cooling and then we put 15 psi of boost and dynoed it and then it finally blew up that's 15 psi on pump gas in a high compression engine so i think that's exactly what you'd expect to happen definitely had some impact uh on the spark plug there oh that's not what those are supposed to look like no way so with that in mind let's fire up uh the old inspection camera here yeah that's that's not pretty see if we can rotate there's definitely there's pieces of stuff in there what are you expecting to find uh i'm expecting to find either a broken cam chain or like broken bolts on the cam sprocket something broken related to the cam because the uh when i went to loosen that bolt the cam turned like a quarter turn and then locked and the engine is seized you can't turn the engine over so it probably broke the broke something to do with the cam and then wrapped up the cam chain down on the bottom end the cam chain's still there that's interesting that's not what i expected maybe it slipped i guess i'll have to dissect it fully at the garage and see what's going on well i'll send you some pretty pictures in the morning yeah i'm curious to see what happened yeah i really i'm honestly surprised that it wasn't the cam thing weather's a big thing that could have affected the failure because i'm sure intake air temps were through the roof oh yeah no doubt you know we're i mean 98 degree air feel how hot that supercharger is now and that's yeah it's still it's been 180 and 200 degrees yeah probably puts iats pushing three something at 15 pounds i'm sure it's not that efficient no no no no no we got a power number it makes 37 horsepower on this dyno today exactly that's what we can say to the rear wheels with two jack shafts and a bunch of chains and sprockets and yeah which probably puts the real world number 60-ish yeah i mean that would be a reasonable parasitic loss and everything else if it was theoretically doing 60 that's more than it would have been as not supercharged right right yeah [Music] exactly well we're back home at the shed and uh it's time to tear this thing apart and see what actually happened i'm not even close to done taking this apart yet but i found a valve shim just laying here in the top of the engine so that's interesting [Music] well that's uh an engineless cinderella nice and light so yeah got the engine up on the bench time to uh pull the head off and see what happened [Music] [Applause] that's bad huh oh yeah it's bad i thought i heard the sound of a piston hitting things that it's not supposed to hit which is to say anything um i haven't pulled this off yet to see what made that happen but as you can see the piston's sideways in the cylinder and you can see where it hit the head and absolutely mutilated it so that's pretty done [Music] that's a proper example of scent and fence isn't it yeah uh i think this counts as like sent and exploded yeah it's a little beyond bent and uh my conclusion is as far as i can tell um the only thing that went wrong is the the piston disintegrated you know just a minor little little failure the rod's not bent the crank's in one piece and the piston is in a few hundred pieces so i don't really know exactly how that happened aside from just way too much pressure and too much heat so the piston maybe got a little warm got a little soft and then seeing is how it's such a thin piston this way just these little skirts here were all that was really keeping it from twisting so it just like got warm and had a way too much pressure in it and then it just went and then hammered itself into the top of the engine so it might even held down the ford if it wasn't 100 degrees yesterday right yeah if if we had like an intercooler on it and it was less than 100 degrees and you know a few other things it might have survived a little more yeah you couldn't rebuild this engine if you wanted to it's uh 100 el dunzo because that part right there and that part right there of the case are destroyed not to mention of course all the other minor damages here and there but the other engine we have is stock and from the same year so we will be able to compare the two horsepower numbers and see if we actually made any gains with the supercharger that's true we can throw that engine in get it running you know as good as we can you know tuned right and everything and then uh yeah we take it back to the dyno and compare a unknown mileage stock engine to uh unknown mileage supercharged engine and compare the numbers that'll be that'll be good info so thanks to everyone that made this video happen uh one of those people is golfcarttiresupply.com they sent us these really cool looking wheels with some street tires on them which uh obviously we had those on for the dyno because it works a lot better on the dyno um and we also have lots of plans for you know doing cool stuff on the street with cindy so uh huge thanks to golf cart tire supply so yeah huge thanks to dwayne from whiskey customs for helping us run the dyno and get this thing on there and thanks to hammer performance for the facility where we uh tested it we'll be back there for sure um with cindy with the stock engine obviously colonel senders needs to be on the dyno as well basically everything we have needs to be dynoed um so hopefully we don't have the same result next time but uh yeah good times [Music] peace
