and of the Holy Spirit's the Lord be peace be with you my dear brothers and sisters we gather today to celebrate Pentecost Sunday God so desires to fill each of us with his gifts of the Holy Spirit the beautiful supernatural virtues which help us live godly lives God wants to be alive into us but we must make our hearts open and ready to receive that grace so as we enter into this Mass let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries I confess to Almighty God and to you my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what I have done and what I have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord our God may Almighty God have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] let us pray oh gods who by the mystery of today's great feast sanctify your whole church and every people in nation pour out we pray the gifts of the Holy Spirit across the face of the earth and with the divine grace that was at work when the gospel was first proclaimed filled now once more the hearts of believers through our Lord Jesus Christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever a reading from the Acts of the Apostles when the time for Pentecost was fulfilled they were all in one place together and suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind and it filled the entire house in which they were then there appeared to them tongues as of fire which parted and came to rest on each one of them and they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues as the spirit enabled them to proclaim now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem at this sound they gathered in a large crowd but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language they were astounded enemy and amazement in amazement they asked are not all these people who are speaking Galileans then how does each of us hear them in his native language we are Parthian 'he's Metis and ella mites inhabitants of Mesopotamia Judea and Cappadocia Pontus and Asia Phrygia and Pamphylia Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene as well as travelers from Rome both Jews and converts to Judaism Cretans and Arabs yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God the word of the Lord [Music] my [Music] [Music] you take away [Music] a reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians brothers and sisters no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit there are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same spirit there are different forms of service but the same Lord there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in every one to each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit as a body is one though it has many parts and all the parts of the body though many are one body so also Christ for in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body whether Jews or Greeks slaves or free persons and we were all given to drink of one spirit the word of the Lord [Music] within these voids nothing good in a deed or thought [Music] the subs that [Music] boys gifted give them toys never [Music] Oh [Music] [Music] the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel according to John on the evening of that first day of the week when the doors were locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them peace be with you when he had said this he showed them his hands and his side the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord jesus said to them again peace be with you as the father has sent me so I send you and when he had said this he breathed on them and said to them receive the Holy Spirit whose sins you forgive are forgiven them and whose sins you retain are retained the gospel of the Lord when I was a little kid I was terrified of the Holy Spirit's I was terrified because I didn't understand the Holy Spirit God the Father seemed more understandable to me because I had a good father and I could relate how God the Father might be kind of like my dad I could understand Jesus as a son because I had a dad and there was five of us boys so that was understandable but this Holy Spirit thing was very unfamiliar I couldn't get my head around or understand what is this Holy Spirit all about and then you have readings like today where you hear of tongues of fire coming down and wind well those were scary things for a little boy we were supposed to be afraid of fire and I was afraid of strong winds what it might do if I was in the shatter wherever I might be so trying to be open to the Holy Spirit was really hard when I was young but I do remember my first communion something really powerful a great peaceful presence settled in my heart and that was very different than the fear that I had experienced previously to that of course has a little second grader I couldn't perhaps articulate exactly what was going on or even know other than it was wonderful and then I remember my confirmation and that that age being a bit older and starting to understand a little more how that Holy Spirit works some of that fear was starting to subside and I was more open to receiving the Holy Spirit and again my confirmation was a beautiful powerful experience for me and Cheerilee all I knew it was something that I did not create or nobody else but it was of God but still I would hear of especially by the time I got to college and even in seminary these people who had charismatic gifts and that really spooked me speaking in tongues and raising their hands thinking what is all that about and so I remember going to retreat which was sponsored by a charismatic group and they were raising their hands and people were slayed in the spirit and I thought I don't want to fall down and I remember just being really hesitant because I was afraid how often in our lives do we hold back because we're afraid we're afraid of the unknown we're afraid of what we don't understand and yet God of course understands our fear he wants to meet us in our fear he wants to help us overcome our fear but we need to leave just enough of a window open to the possibility of the Holy Spirit and something totally different than we've experienced before and as we experience that Holy Spirit so for me through my time and First Communion and Confirmation eventually sensing the call to be a priest and I was afraid to death of having to get up and preach but God kept working on my hearts and I must have left enough of a small crack for him to come in so that that fear could eventually be surrendered to him of course then once I was ordained a deacon and a priest then it was a whole new level of the Holy Spirit working through me the words that I would get when I would be in the confessional I just taking the ordinary bread and wine and letting literally experiencing the Holy Spirit flowing through me as it changes it into the body and blood I was starting to get it more and more and more most recently a powerful experience was on December 2nd at 1:40 in the afternoon when I was in the adoration Chapel that was the day that the nun Co so the Pope's helper called me and said that you have been appointed by Pope Francis to be the ninth Bishop of Sioux Falls South Dakota and I was like oh and I knew what I needed to do I knew that I needed to run to the Lord very quickly because if I start thinking about it I'm gonna get afraid I had learnt that power of fear in my life and when I went to the chapel to pray within about 10 12 minutes I had that very clear and profound experience of grace so much what I experienced am I called to be a priest but in this time of prayer the Lord very clearly said to me I want you to say yes and I will give you everything you need and I'd have to say that experience of all the things in my life was the time when I said yes to the Lord to this tremendous unknown this thing's so far beyond me I can't change a seminarian into a deacon but I did two days ago or God did in me and one day a goal to change a deacon into a priest God can do it in me but it's when I said yes to the Lord that I felt most inhibited in my life most free from the fear I don't know what your experience is of the Holy Spirit but I share that just as a simple example for us to think about what is if there are any any inhibitors in our heart in our lives that keep us from being just completely free to follow the promptings of God whatever that might be for example being able to speak in our family and with our friends in our workplace about God assuming we can that we're not like in a public school system or something of that nature but just to be so free to talk about anybody about what's going on in our spiritual lives well many of us Catholics didn't grow up with that sort of thing our relationship was more this sort of thing with God but Jesus is so clear what he Pentecost is all about is it wasn't Jesus just doing all the great thing anymore when the Holy Spirit came upon these apostles now it was the Holy Spirit through them and that's what of course I experienced as a layperson once I began to understand it as a deacon and as a priest and now as a bishop but that's not just for those of us called to be deacons priests or bishops it's for every single human being that was baptized we are to go out and to share the good news wherever we're at and whatever way the Holy Spirit prompts us and it can feel extremely awkward but I love a line I heard just the last week heaven is worth being awkward my brothers and sisters let's pray that the Holy Spirit will enlighten us in any sort of apprehension we have about letting the Holy Spirit within us so that God can just move as freely as possible and that others seeing us there's something radically different in that person that's because it's God they know the difference and we know the difference when it's God let's pray for the grace the Holy Spirit too for the full release the Pentecost in each of us and throughout the world I believe in one God the Father Almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God born of the father before all ages God from God light from light true God from True God begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the Dead and the life of the world with God's great desire to fill us with himself so he can be spread throughout the world to reach of us as we acknowledge our needs for that grace let's place before I'm now our prayers petition that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide the Vicar of Christ on earth Pope Francis and the successors of the Apostles bishops throughout the world as they preach the truth of the gospel to all peoples we pray to the Lord that the Holy Spirit who makes present the mystery of God's plan through the preaching and teaching of the church will unite all Christians in belief and practice we pray to the Lord for our brothers and sisters coming into the Catholic Church today whom the gift of the Holy Spirit has confirmed that planted in faith and grounded in love they may bear witness to Christ the Lord by their way of life we pray to the Lord [Music] for their sponsors and families that by word and example they may continue to encourage those whom they have sponsored in the faith to follow in the footsteps of Christ we pray to the Lord that our parish and all parishes will be transformed by the coming of the Holy Spirit this day so that we might follow Christ with all our heart mind and strength we pray for the Lord for those in need especially the poor the sick and the suffering that the Holy Spirit may bring hope and assistance to them through the generosity of God's people we pray to the Lord for an end to the violence and unrest as a result of the racial incident in Minneapolis may justice be served and peace restored we pray to the Lord loving father bless us with the Sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit and let our lives manifest all the fruits of the Spirit as we pray through Christ our Lord [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] hey brothers and sisters of my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty father grant we pray O Lord that as promised by your son the Holy Spirit may reveal to us more abundantly the hidden mystery of this sacrifice and graciously lead us into all truth through Christ our Lord follow would be with you [Music] lift up your hearts [Music] let us give thanks to the Lord our God [Music] it is truly right and just our the day before he was to suffer he took bread in his holy and venerable hands and with eyes raised to heaven to you O God his Almighty father giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took this precious chalice and his holy and venerable hands and once more giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of My
