look a little different because there's no worship team up here our worship pastor alex well he didn't have the baby but his wife did so they have their new child and they're celebrating at home and who gave [Music] us is [Music] let's stand together here isn't it exciting that there's going to be a hymn i think when we start off we get to heaven we're going to sing and and the rumor has it that i'll be singing kind of like alex cooper then at that point okay yeah there are miracles there are miracles i love you guys have a seat we want to welcome uh everybody that's here at mariners today and uh and those who are watching online we're uh just especially grateful for you dialing in and uh the reason that alex could not be with us today alex and jess i think is gonna pop up on the screen right there that is noah alexander cooper and he's kind of like eli part two is he looks a lot like eli did but what a gift uh he has been uh to them and he will be to us and and the whole cooper family such a gift to mariners church um would you pray with me let's uh let's pray heavenly father we're thankful that we can come and listen to you speak your word and i pray that your word would be clear as we uh close out this cornerstone campaign uh this this morning that you would uh just speak clearly to each one of us i pray that we would all hear you uniquely where we are in our our journey with you and that we would each one take a step forward uh in obedience to you and we pray that all glory would come through your word and through our obedience to it to our lord and savior jesus christ we pray in his name and all god's people said amen amen well a couple of weeks ago we we launched this uh cornerstone campaign which would lead us to our home free building uh i shared a vision for the home free project a few weeks ago the home free vision is to build a lighthouse strategically located in annapolis to serve as a beacon for the gospel of jesus christ here and beyond for the glory of god our church has been committed to this journey called home free and our simple journey and destination is to a a piece of land uh that has a building on it that we will one day own free and clear thus the name home free and the two uh simple reasons for home free uh two words stewardship and salvation we believe that this journey will make us more efficient in our stewardship of god's resources and as a result more effective in reaching people with the salvation of the lord jesus and i shared with you a few sundays ago the steps that we have taken uh and the steps that lay ahead of us to arrive at this vision and we laid out seven steps like they're like mountains that had to be scaled and climbed and so i just want to review those with you quickly step one for us in this journey was the mountain of finding property and we found our strategic property six acres a mile and a half from gate 8 of the naval academy on 450 very close to downtown annapolis we could not imagine a more strategic location for this vision of mariners church and the advancement of the gospel step two was the mountain of paying off the property we conducted a couple of campaigns one campaign to raise the down payment the other to pay it off and right now we own this property free and clear a million dollar piece of property that's owned step three for us was the mountain of adding property this was an unexpected step for us and you can see that house on your screen we added uh two acres and the purchase of a home that is exactly adjacent to our six acres and it's already being used the home is in ministry and we feel it's gonna just make us more effective down the road to have that extra property step four was a big one for us this is the mountain of bank bank financing promised this mountain was for us coming up with a design for our building and the site development that would pass through the state and the county uh approvals and also uh be in a in a neighborhood where our bank would would give us financing uh we made a number of bold attempts at this but finally in the last couple of years as a result of covid and our success with the live stream ministry we decided to scale back our building to build something smaller the building is there on the screen something like that and we believe that this building is going to be one where we can effectively minister minister and grow over the next few years and the good news is that the bank has promised us uh financing for this project which brought us to step number five which is the mountain of bank financing secured the bank has told us that before they will sign a loan agreement we must have three hundred thousand dollars of cash in hand and for a toward a total project of four million dollars as well as uh having in place uh a capital campaign commitment of one million in pledges payable over three years so that makes the minimum bank requirement for us 1.3 million in cash and pledges lord willing by october that will be followed with step six uh after we get the bank funding uh the the mountain of re relocation to maryland 450 this is going to be the huge mountain of actually constructing the building uh completing the building so the keys are turned over to us and we will we're told that construction could take up to a year and uh we've thought what a great day that's going to be when we have our first service over there on maryland 450. step seven in this this home free process is having all the debt paid off uh having the mountain of debt removed which will free up listen to this 20 000 a month that we're paying now on this lease to do great things and reach people for the lord jesus adding missionaries adding staff also preparing for phase two of our home free project uh we're hoping one day to have a step eight which i'm just calling the mountain of home free again we have on the screen there an artist rendering of what phase one and phase do would look like together a worship center of 400 to 500 offices meeting rooms kitchen restrooms the whole deal in this phase two so just wanted to lay that before you but what what i want to do now is i would like to uh just in terms of giving all of us a final motivation for our involvement in this campaign to give you what i we believe are four factors that will grant success to this campaign and god's favor and the first factor is this continuous prayer if you were to consider our home free project as a car there would be no movement there's no movement in a car unless you have gas fuel the car of home free goes nowhere without prayer if prayer is the fuel of this project john wesley said god will do nothing but an answer to prayer aj gordon said you can do more than pray after you prayed you cannot do more than pray until you have prayed we must constantly be bathing this project in prayer that's why when we started the cornerstone campaign a few weeks ago we started after the service with prayer we then had a prayer meeting on wednesday night the 15th then we went out to the property you remember last week did a prayer walk we had another prayer meeting here last wednesday night the 22nd and then we just had a prayer vigil on friday night all the way through saturday night and today right after the service at the end of the service really i'm going to invite you to come forward and we're going to pray again because we believe it is god who's going to do this philippians 4 verse 6 be anxious for for nothing but in everything including this home free project by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to god there is a second factor that we believe will lead to the success and accomplishment of this project and that is a clear perspective we must have a clear perspective on this project and more fundamentally i believe all of us need a clear perspective on the life that we've been called to live on planet earth we need to understand folks that there are two days in which we will live there is this day right now and there's that day that is coming and we need to have a biblical perspective on giving to this project to have a clear vision and the best way that i know to describe this perspective to you is to do this again to show you this rope uh which is a picture a snapshot of the timeline of your existence now why am i showing this again because not everybody gets this and maybe on the 95th time you're gonna get it because you know how you know when a person's got it when they're living like jesus you hear me so this this rope represents a timeline of our existence you'll notice there's a little red section of the rope this stands for our time right now this day that we're living right now on planet earth the the rest of the rope this white section which goes on and on and on forever that's eternity that's where we're going to be for eternity and and we've said there's there's a number of principles that this rope uh teaches us and the first is very obvious and it that is that this day our life in this day is very short that day of eternity is long it goes billions and jillions and jillions of years forever and ever so that's the first principle this day's short that day's long here's the second principle that day that day of eternity is coming this day matters that means where i spend eternity and how i spend eternity is going to be determined by the choices and decisions that i make in this day this day matters it is vitally important and the most important place where it matters is with regard to your relationship my relationship with jesus christ jesus came to this earth to live the life we couldn't live to die the death we couldn't die to do for us what we couldn't do for ourselves save us from our sins so that we could one day go to heaven what what the bible says we must do with regard to jesus is repent and bow the knee get off the throne and give the rightful rulership of our life to jesus christ folks that is the most important decision that you can make in this red part of the road it is it is fundamental because that will determine your destination in eternity heaven or hell and then after we give our life to jesus christ there are certain things that he wants he doesn't take us to heaven immediately there are certain things that he wants us to do and if we've searched the scripture and we have discovered seven disciplines that jesus calls us to do on a regular basis a daily basis uh we are to read the word of god faithfully every day to get instructions for life we are to pray and have a relationship of communication with him pray expectantly we're to give generously as jesus gave we're together together regularly just as we're doing this morning gather together he also calls us to serve one another sacrificially and then this is big he he calls us to invite others intentionally to have people in your heart to invite to come to him in evangelism and salvation and every day he calls us to remember gratefully what he has accomplished for us at the cross now uh folks here's the perspective that i'm talking about we've got we've got one shot at this race called life i only have one life to live you only have one life to live and i want to make every day count in this day for that day you see and because now here's another perspective here about this rope here's the third principle this day's short that day is long that day's coming this day matters listen folks this day is uncertain that day is certain you don't know how much more time you have in this day we do know that you have forever and ever and ever in that day and since we only have one chance at this and then comes eternity i i'm not going to be fooled i'm not going to spend my time wasting wasting my time on things that don't matter this is this is my perspective you see the perspective that i must have as i live in this day is that i want to be ready i want to be prepared for that day after bowing your knee to the king of heaven the lord jesus these seven things are things that i need to be doing on a regular basis to be prepared for that day and market one of the things one of the great things that you could do now to be ready to meet jesus who will be the first person you meet in eternity is to give and what we have in this campaign is a great opportunity to give and we don't want you to miss it and so i want to talk to you about giving in the next moments let me give you some perspective here's what jesus said about giving in acts 20 35 it's more blessed to give than to receive it's more better to give than to receive giving is is commanded by god folks it is liberating it is rewarding it is joyous it is profoundly re uh enriching and and there has never been a group of people a group of churches that understood god's perspective on giving more clearly than the churches of macedonia in the new testament listen to what paul says about these churches in macedonia in second corinthians 8 1-5 he says now brethren we wish to make known to you the grace of god which has been given in the churches of macedonia that in a great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed with a wealth of liberality they gave like crazy for i testify that according to their ability and beyond their ability they gave of their own accord and they begged us with much urging for the favor of participation in the support of the saints in jerusalem and this not as we had expected not as we had expected but first they first gave themselves to the lord and then to us by the will of god that's that's where all giving starts folks it starts with first giving to the lord for his amazing grace to us and then giving to others and that's what the macedonians did in other words they they were so amped up on giving that they pleaded for the opportunity to give they they found it so rewarding so blessed so joyous enriching beneficial that they were begging paul for the opportunity to give and can i just say this what a great place to come to in your life what a great place to be uh to be at that place where you we are pleading we are pleading for somewhere to give our resources because you understand the benefits uh in time and eternity of generosity now there must be a legitimate place for me to give i need to give to something that i am convinced will impact eternity impact the kingdom of god i must give to something that will give glory to the king of heaven a place that will be used to bring many people to jesus folks we believe that this cornerstone campaign that we're offering that we're offering you a place to invest that is to put your earthly money to receive the reward of heavenly dividends a heavenly 403 b account roth whatever you call those things in heaven i i read a devotional that i've had for several years i think i've given it to many of you it's called daily with the king and on july 27th there's a short passage on giving and it discusses the different ways that christians are to give let me read it it's in your bulletin it's called bountiful giving it says there are levels of christian giving and as a disciple i must give on a disciples level listen folks the minimum level of giving in the christian life is the tithe this is the obligatory gift the amount that i owe to god and the refusal to return it to god is theft that according to malachi 3 8. but then there's this other level of giving that's beyond the tithe it is the giving that is designed for a special purpose for the kingdom it's really the highest level of giving and it's called giving bountifully from second corinthians nine verse six it is the kind of giving that jesus called the disciples attention to when they watched the widow remember the widow when she gave her might it was all of her living this kind of giving recognizes a fundamental principle in our relationship to god it's called the principle of the new tenant once we commit ourselves totally to god a new tenant comes into our body and takes over our life and therefore thereafter he dictates policy even down to the way we spend our money or really his money we do not use our money unless we have first given him a requisition and asking god bountiful giving is always connected with ministry it is the material expression of god's overflowing love through us to others it is the substance that tangibly reminds people that god is alive and he cares as a disciple i must put my bank account as well as my talents in god's hands and once in his hands i must let him draw as much as he wants and watch this and then stand back and watch him richly refill what he has taken away now listen the lord supports the work of the local church on an ongoing basis through the ties of his people as people give the first 10 that's the tithe of their income to the lord that is used to support the ministries of the church on a day-to-day basis but every now and then the lord gives his people opportunities to give over and above that when people are in great need and churches are in great need as as in recent years there have been natural disasters where people have been in great need and and we've had opportunity to give to that but sometimes the lord gives us opportunities to give to a work that will lead to a greater expansion of the gospel that is precisely what home free is about we believe that a new building bought and paid for on maryland 450 will make us far more effective in reaching people with the gospel in this community and around the world because of its location its strategic location and design and the ministries that will take place there in addition when it is bought and paid for home free so much of the ties that we're currently using to support the the day-to-day operation can go out to support missions and be redirected all of that to say that the opportunity to give that we are laying before you and the cornerstone campaign we believe is an investment in the bank of heaven that will be sure and certain to yield dividends and this is a project that will be supported by bountiful giving that is over and above the ties of our people so two factors continuous prayer a clear perspective on time and eternity and giving and then here's the third factor i'm just calling this captivating principle there is a principle in ii corinthians 9 6 which has amazing power to captivate a heart the hearts of the churches in macedonia were captivated by this principle they believed in the reality of this principle the holy spirit had communicated it captivated them with the truthfulness of this principle here comes verse 6 he who sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully folks how simple is that and yet so many people miss the abundance of the christian life because their hearts have not been captured by this principle and here it is you're not going to get a pro a crop on anything more than the seed that you sow whatever you sow will determine your crop that's it you reap what you sow if you sow a few seeds you're going to get a little crop but if you sow big you're going to get a large crop that is the principle sowing is giving and now watch what paul said to them in the next verse on this matter of giving he says each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart not grudgingly or under compulsion for god loves a cheerful giver he's saying in bountiful giving you need to make a decision you need a purpose in your heart don't don't do it grudgingly or under coercion you just decide in your heart what you're going to do based on the kind of dividend that you want to receive and then he follows it in verse 8 with this promise to those who've been captivated by this principle you reap what you sow he says listen to this god is able to make all grace abound to you so that always having all sufficiency in everything you may have an abundance for every good deed you know what happens when you sow a seed you get a crop and out of that crop comes multiplied seed which you take and you sow it again and it keeps expanding that's the principle look at second corinthians 9 10 and 11. it says now he god who supplies seed to the sower the giver and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness and you will be enriched in everything for all liberality which through us is producing thanksgiving to god the principle of giving then is simply this you sow and you reap and whatever you sow god multiplies and gives back to you and you know what the main harvest is i hope you saw that in verses 10 and 11 the maid main harvest of what you get after you sow in giving is righteousness it is righteousness the primary fruit of the seed of cheerful giving is righteousness you know why because when you give you're doing the right thing you were made i was made to be a giver and when you have righteousness you know what follows it comes behind righteousness peace peace that that calm sense of adequacy that i have everything i need to face anything that comes and you know what follows righteousness and peace joy and you know what joy is a heart that is light a heart that is unburdened and that is what god desires for us as we learn how to give the question is how much do you want how much do you want to sow with god how much blessing do you want how much do you want to invest in the greatest investment there is and and to invest in a living god who always gets a full return on every investment look at luke 6 38 this verse is crazy it says give and it will be given to you they will pour into your lap good measure press down shaking together running over it will be overwhelming for by your standard of measure it will be measured to you that's saying what you sow you're going to reap if these words are true that we've been sharing we determine the blessing that we will receive from god by our willingness to sow or not sow it's my sense oh my goodness it is my sense if we really understood the word of god and what this means that we would be lining up like the macedonians begging pleading for an opportunity to give because we understand that there's going to be a harvest both in time and eternity that will make us just infinitely wealthy okay there's one more factor i've given you three can what makes this campaign a success continuous prayer clear perspective captivating principle and then factor number four i'm calling correct priority let me tell you a story that jesus told about a man who did not have the correct priority i think it's jesus talked more about money than any other subject really but but here it is in luke chapter 12. talked about a rich man and he said this luke 12 15 then he said to them beware and be on your guard against every form of greed for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions and then he told them a parable saying the land of a rich man was very productive and he began reasoning to himself what shall i do since i have no place to store my crops and then he said ah this is what i'll do i'll tear down my barns and build larger ones and there i'll store all my grain in my goods and then i'll say to my soul so you have many goods laid up for years to come take your ease eat drink and be merry but then god breaks in and says to him you fool this very night your soul is required of you and now question who will own what you have prepared let me give you a little clue to the answer to that question his first name starts with s his last name with e somebody else somebody else jesus saying you aren't taking any of this stuff with you so it is with the man who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward god now you know when you consider this story we don't know how this man got rich we don't have to assume that he made his living dishonestly not at all there's no reason to assume that he was exploiting people anything like that he probably attended synagogue weekly with a lot of other businessmen just going about doing his business he he perhaps visited the temple three times a year at the appropriate celebrations he he probably prayed maybe his other jews had done he had all the appearance of a man who worked diligently to build his business probably paid his taxes that's all he is he's just mr businessman and he's just doing what businessmen do he gets to the point where his business is expanding it's growing and he says you know i'm gonna i'm gonna have to tear down my barns and build bigger barns that's no different than saying uh you know my warehouse is too small i can't contain all my inventory in the warehouse my office is too small i've got too many sales people crowding this small deal we need new space new office space i need a new fleet of trucks to take my my stuff around the country i need to hire some more salesmen we need to open an office in another city it's all just part of normal business now why did he do this so that one day he would say to himself now you can sit down and eat and drink and be merry now is there anything wrong with that there's nothing wrong with eating i'm planning on doing that after church eating and drinking and being married there's nothing wrong with that i i was i went to a wedding on friday night there was a bunch of mary going on and it was wonderful what is he talking about he's he's talking about retirement here all he wants to do is get to the place where he doesn't have to run the deal anymore it's a lot of responsibility run a business i just need to expand my business that way it'll be more productive i'll make more money more money more money i can set it aside retire early it's really the american dream right here in luke chapter 12. accumulate enough wealth retire enjoy yourself have a good time that's all he wanted to do but watch it just to keep all this stuff for me but god said to the man you're a fool why'd you say that are you a fool to build your business no he said you're you're a fool because this very night your life will be demanded of you you're a fool because you're gonna die you're gonna move from the red part of the rope to the white part of the rope and the problem is you've taken great care of your life here but you haven't done anything to take care of your life there and you are going there tonight you have lived your life with the incorrect priority you have been living in this day with no thought of that day and that's the folly there's no folly in building your business listen i pray that all the businesses represented here at mariners church flourish that's a wonderful thing and and we have a right it's right to work hard to build business and and to make them strong and to succeed in that regard the problem with this man he was a fool because he hadn't prepared for the life to come he had the wrong priority that was the issue he was big on preparing for life here life now he made no preparation for the life to come and that was his folly he wasn't taking his stuff you can send your stuff on ahead by investing it in kingdom projects that will advance the kingdom for the glory of god things like home free no jesus made it clear in verse 21 so is the man who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward god he doesn't do anything in terms of dealing with god doesn't lay up spiritual riches build your company build your career be successful do what you need but be rich toward god do you see what this is saying invest in eternity let me ask you this how would you live your life if you knew that you only had one month to live one month 30 days to live would it affect your decisions if you knew you were switching from the red part of the rope to the white part of the road let me tell you if if i knew i only had one month to live and i hadn't made this decision yet the most important decision that you can make in your life is what you decide concerning the person of jesus christ if you have not made that decision i wouldn't leave this building today without repenting of my sin and bowing my knee to the one who loved me so much that he went to hell for me on a cross because he didn't want to live in heaven without me and he just wants to give me himself his eternal life and forgiveness i would that is the most important thing that you need to do if you've never done that before but after you have bowed your knee to jesus christ uh jesus has some things that he wants us to do would knowing that i have just one month to live affect the way i live my life i think it would in the spring of 1996 my brother was told that he only had one month to live after a routine gallbladder surgery they opened him up and they found he had advanced cancer in his body and he was told keith you've got about a month to live you need to get your affairs in order now understand keith was a pastor and he loved jesus and he was already living for christ but i have to tell you something happened in him there was there was a sense of purpose a boldness intensity in his life that i had never seen before he had been giving himself to all of these seven disciplines but now with amazing passion reading faithfully praying expectantly giving generously gathering with other believers regularly serving sacrificially and watch this one inviting others to come to jesus all over the place that's all he did he actually had 11 months to live and what he did is he avoided the non-essential things that don't relate to that day he devoted himself to the things that would bring glory to jesus christ he read he prayed he gave he gathered he served he invited he preached more than ever before he led more people to jesus his memorial service was jammed 600 people people i never knew that he had led to christ he was living in this day but more than ever he was living for that day this day is short that day is long you don't know you don't know nobody here knows how much more time you have in this day if we really understood these things we would be driven the only same way to live our life would be for that day i had the amazing privilege of being with my brother at the moment he died with incredible peace we actually talked right before he died he was ready because of the life that he lived and my question is what about you if you only had one month to live what would you do are you ready to live for that day and if you want to live for that day one of the best things you can do is give generously give to those things that will advance the kingdom of the lord jesus opportunities are like trains that come into the station they stay for a while and then the trains take off and i'm here to tell you this morning you everybody listening to my voice you have a great opportunity to hop on the train of this campaign with a group of people that are doing something eternally significant there are some here today that can give far more than you think and i am praying that you would not hold back that you would give as you've never given before and that god would richly bless your life and so as we leave today i'm going to encourage you to turn into your response card if you're ready to make your response you can turn that into the offering box if you need another week or so you can you can take that response card home and send it in with an envelope and your check or whatever to the campaign or you can give online to the to the campaign make your pledge that way we're gonna we're gonna close the service uh in just a moment uh by as i said praying um we're going to have a final song sung alex is going to lead us and then when the song starts playing i'm going to invite you to come forward and we're going to pray together uh down front uh and just pray for god to bless uh this campaign uh back in june i introduced that this campaign was coming and i preached on joshua and jericho you remember the walls uh that that had to come down for there to be victory well the same thing is true the wall folks for us to give as god intends us to give the walls of selfishness the walls of fear and greed those things have to come down so i think it's going to be a fitting song for us to close with uh some of you remember who remembers jericho walls that alex sang as soon as this song starts playing i'm going to ask you to come down but please know if you need to go to get your children or if you need to leave feel free to do that we're going to pray not for a long time but i'm just going to invite you to come down as soon as the song starts playing i'll meet you down here oh i've been stacking up the years i've spent trading punches with the enemy who built myself a double thick stone tower lies higher than the eye can see trapped in this flesh and bone crying out to you lord i'm desperate oh love come right [Music] gotta is oh truth was crashing through the pride and the blame [Music] [Music] is when your your spirit to come and move in our hearts to give generously to give sacrificially and to give beyond what we feel is possible for each one of us and that's different for each one of us so you lay that on each of our hearts to know what we are to give and to and that you would add the increase and we just thank you in advance for all that you're going to do amen amen father god in heaven faith in you includes faith in your timing father we believe this is your time and we stand with your promise that you will never leave us or forsake us including our finances and our basic needs amen in just a little over one year we will all be standing in this same circle amen amen amen and lord we know that we can never out give you well now unto him who's able to do exceeding abundantly beyond
