device and follow along as we take a glimpse into this week's sunday school lesson now let's get started with this wonderful lesson the lesson title for this week's september the 12th is celebrating with enthusiasm and this is the title in the adult book the title of the sunday school commentary is david dances before the ark the background scripture is 2nd samuel chapter 6 and the print passage is second samuel chapter 6 verses 1-5 and verses 14-19 the key verse in this week's lesson is david and all israel were celebrating with all their might before the lord with castanets harps liars timbrels cisterns and symbols and at second samuel chapter 6 verse 5 the new international version here are some questions to reflect on as we go through this week's lesson question number one why were king david and all of israel celebrating question number two how did they celebrate and question number three what was king david's wife's reaction when she saw him leaping and dancing before the lord let's take a brief look at the lesson biblical context this week's lesson is in the book of second samuel and prominent characters in this lesson are abinadab david and mikael abinadab uh the ark of the covenant was kept at abinadab's home until david brought it into jerusalem abinad had two sons other and ohio who we will hear more about in this week's lesson god chose and anointed david king over israel he was the second king of israel and he was the youngest of eight sons of jesse and was from the tribe of judah he was the great-grandson of ruth and boaz mikhail the youngest daughter of king saul she was given to david in marriage as his reward for slain goliath david after being crowned king over all israel and once he had consolidated power and authority into his hands the first strategic decision that he made was to move the ark from the home of abinadab to jerusalem the ark of the covenant was the most sacred object connected with the wilderness tabernacle the ark of the covenant represented the presence of god who dwelled among his people in a special way israel was commanded by god to observe a set of special rules for handling and transporting the sacred ark and we read this in exodus chapter 25 verses 12 through 14. it was to be handled with reverence even in its transportation from place to place the lord gave moses the exact details and dimensions for each of the objects of the tabernacle and the artifacts that were to be included during the period of the tabernacle's construction aaron and his sons were ordained to be the high priest who would provide for the services of the tabernacle the law specified that the ark be carried by levites the ark of the covenant was a golden rectangular box that contained the ten commandments a jar containing manna and the budding rod of aaron in this week's lesson david celebrates the goodness and grace of god with a powerful display of praise and worship he teaches us about the importance of not being ashamed to dance and shout before the lord this week's lesson aims are number one explore david's joy and michelle's a contempt for him number two appreciate many ways to celebrate god's presence thirdly plan celebrations that honor god through praise and worship as we continue our glimpse into this week's lesson i'm going to share two key points from each outline in the lesson text and expound some on each one there are two outlines presented in the adult faith pathway sunday school book in this week's lesson the first outline is corporate praise and that's second samuel chapter six verses one through five and the second outline is personal praise second samuel chapter six verses fourteen through nineteen let's begin our analysis of the biblical text as we begin with the first outline corporate praise key point number one david gathered chosen men from israel in preparation for retrieving the ark of the covenant verse one reads david again brought together all the able young men of israel thirty thousand verse number two he and all his men went to bahala in judah to bring up from there the ark of god which is called by the name the name of the lord almighty who is enthroned between the cherubim on the ark david assembled all of israel together to bring the ark to jerusalem while it may have seemed ideal to bring together the best of what was available it was not what god had commanded concerning the transportation of the ark verse 3 they set the ark of god on a new cart and brought it from the house of abinadab which was on the hill azza and ohio sons of abinadab were guiding the new cart in verse 4 with the ark of god on it and ohio was walking in front of it the ark was accompanied by the two sons of benidab uzza and ohio who drove the cart as noted in verse 3 the ark was placed on a new cart while the new cart may have been used with good intention again it was not god's prescribed method for handling the holy vessel and was therefore unacceptable verse 5 reads david and all israel were celebrated with all their might before the lord with castanets harps liars timbrels systems and symbols key point number two david and all israel celebrated and praised god with all their might and with a variety of instruments they engaged in corporate praise whenever god does great things for us whether individually or collectively we should all rejoice psalms 100 verse 1 and 2 says make a joyful noise unto the lord all ye lands serve the lord with gladness come before his presence with singing verses 6 through 13 are not a part of this week's lesson the content in these verses is not the focus of today's lesson but will be mentioned briefly in these verses the anger of the lord kindled against the children of israel as ozza touched the ark in order to stabilize it and was struck dead during the process of moving the ark david and the people who are with him ignored the prescribed procedures for its proper handling or transportation the ark was to be carried on specifically designed poles and carried by the priest instead a benedict's sons placed the ark unsecured on a new ox drawn cart according to the scriptures the ark and the holy vessel should have been carried only upon the shoulders of the levites the ark of god was the most sacred religious artifact of ancient israelite faith the people were excited because the ark of god was coming home on the one hand it was a festive rural occasion at the same time it was an occasion with deep spiritual significance that prompted the people to break out in authentic elaborate praise as they were going up to jerusalem the ox stumbled causing the ark to slide in an effort to keep the ark from falling abinadab's son ozza reached out to steady the ark with his hand which was in direct violation of divine law and died immediately in judgment for his mistake after this happened as noted in verses 9 through 11 david was afraid of the lord and would not move the ark of the lord with him into the city of david the remaining men removed the ark from the cart and took it to the home of obed edom second samuel chapter 6 verse 12 reads now king david was told the lord has blessed the household of obed edom and everything he has because of the ark of god so david went to bring up the ark of god from the house of obed edom to the city of david with rejoicing david made a second attempt to bring the ark of the covenant into jerusalem this leads to verses in the second outline personal praise once the king realized the error he worked to do things in the proper order as prescribed by the law key point number one david gets the right people follows the proper procedures and protocols in transporting the ark god wants us to follow his instructions and do things his way not our way verse 14 reads wearing a lennon ethod david was dancing before the lord with all his might in verse 15 while he and all israel were bringing up the ark of the lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets in the second attempt to bring the ark to jerusalem david assumed more of a priestly role offering sacrifices in wearing a linen epic a garment usually associated with priesthood the joyous worship celebration included dancing and music from a variety of instruments this time there is no mention of choice men or fancy chariots instead he gets the right people for the job following the proper procedures and protocols the king leads the procession by dancing with all his might before the lord key point number two the people worshiped god joyfully with many musical expressions and instruments as david danced all of israel was gathered together in celebration of the return of the ark to jerusalem with celebratory shouts and sounds of trumpets music was a vital part of ancient hebrew worship they worship with all types of instruments verse 16 reads as the ark of the lord was entering the city of david mikhail daughter of saul watched him from a window and when she saw king david leaping and dancing before the lord she despised him in her heart while all of israel was gathered and celebrating david's wife mikhail saul's daughter watched from a window she saw her husband the king of israel leading the procession leaping and dancing in only a linen garment and she held personal contempt against him in her heart she despised him in her heart she was not happy with him and what he was doing she criticized david for his manner of dress and the undignified way in which he leaped and danced in public as he worshipped god she did not join the worship processional nor offer god any expression of personal praise verse 17 reads they brought the ark of the lord and set it in its place inside the tent that david had pitched for it and david sanctified burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the lord and verse 18 reads after he had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings he blessed the people in the name of the lord almighty designated men had carefully placed the ark in the place that david had prepared a tabernacle housed the ark until the sanctuary was built years later david immediately offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the lord verse 19 then he gave a loaf of bread a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of israelites both men and women and all the people went to their homes verses 17 through 19 described the joyous conclusion that accompanied the bringing of the ark of the lord into jerusalem in summary as king david energetically and eagerly engaged in the worship service for the lord we should also be enthusiastic every time we gather to give glory to god psalms 150 says praise the lord praise god in his sanctuary praise him in his mighty heavens praise him for his acts of power praise him for his surpassing greatness praise him with the sounding of the trumpet praise him with the harp and liar praise him with timbrel and dancing praise him with the strings and pipe praise him with the clash of symbols praise him with resounding symbols let everything that has breath praise the lord praise the lord every moment of worship should be a celebration of god's grace and mercy every child of god should be able to celebrate something that god has done for them there are many reasons to give god praise it is good to give thanks unto the
