September 12, 2021: David Dances Before The Ark 2 Samuel 6:1-5,14-19 Sunday School Made Simple

verses 1 through 5 and then verses 14 through 19. the lesson title is david dances before the ark and my question to you is how do you praise god do you dance sing shout cry raise your hands or do you sit in silent are some may criticize our worship style and music because it's too emotional yes but god desires worship that's not just from our intellect he desires worship from our entire being including our physical expression by the end of this lesson we'll explore david's joy and mikhail's contempt for him we'll appreciate many ways to celebrate god's presence and we'll plan celebrations that honor god through praise and worship here are the focal verses 2nd samuel chapter 6 verse 1 through 5 and a reading from the new living translation then david again gathered all the elite troops in israel thirty thousand in all he led them to bala of judah to bring back the ark of god which bears the name of the lord of heaven's armies he is enthroned between the cherubim they placed the ark of god on a new cart and brought it from abinadab's house which was on a hill aza and ahio a binidad's sons were guiding the cart that carried the ark of god a heel walked in front of the ark david and all the people of israel were celebrating before the lord singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments liars hearts tambourines castanets and symbols and david danced before the lord with all his might wearing a priestly garment so david and all the people of israel brought up the ark of the lord with shouts of joy and blowing of ram's horns but as the ark of the lord entered the city of david mccall the daughter of saul looked down from her window when she saw king david leaping and dancing before the lord she was filled with contempt for him they brought the ark of the lord and set it in its place inside the special tent david had prepared for it and david sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings to the lord when he had finished his sacrifices david blessed the people in the name of the lord of heaven's armies then he gave to every israelite man and woman in the crowd a loaf of bread a cake of dates and a cake of raisins then all the people returned to their homes so reads the word of the lord king david wanted to turn the hearts of his people back to the lord the first step was to bring the ark of god to jerusalem the ark represented god's presence with his people but it had been ignored and fought over by pagan people and now david wants to focus israel's attention on the presence of god at first david had a new cart made to carry the ark but this was not the way that scripture commanded it to be handled not following directions led to a great disaster in which one of the priests was killed because he touched the ark david learned from reading the word of god that the priests were supposed to carry the ark with poles on their shoulders so his second attempt succeeded in bringing the ark of the lord to the special tent that he had prepared for it when the ark was carried the proper way david and the people worshiped the lord with their entire beings instead of his kingly robes david wore the simple garment of a priest david and all the people leaped and danced and played musical instruments and shouted with joy mccall the wife of david who was the daughter of saul looked out of her window and she saw david enthusiastically worshiping god and she despised his dancing she thought that as a king he should act in the way that people would hold him in reverence but david was disgusted with her attitude when the ark made it to its destination david offered sacrifices to the lord and then he praised the lord with all of his might along with the people of israel and gave to everyone a gift to continue their celebrations at home [Music] our lesson today is about the ark's return to the people of god david celebrated with sincere worship and gratitude that the ark was with god's people once again because it represented god's presence the ark contained the two tablets with the ten commandments so we understand why it was so special to god and to his people because the ark is holy the ark had to be moved according to god's commands and to be holy means to be set apart for a special purpose much like a special set of dishes to be used for special occasions there are standards for holiness and david found this out when azza died for touching the ark because david long for god's presence to be with the people and he moved the ark the first time incorrectly but the second time he moved it he succeeded because he did it according to god's commandments and he danced and put on priestly garments and celebrated before the lord well david's wife mikal the daughter of saul despised the king she remained childless child of god like david we should unashamedly praise the lord by living holy lives god tells us to be holy because he's holy and we should live like the special people god called us to be separate and set apart to do his will let's celebrate god by singing clapping and dancing and the church said amen [Music] you
