[Music] again and welcome to another video where we're studying working through the Psalms a number of Psalms anyway not all of them I'm Karl Santos on the pastor at new city church here in Calgary Alberta Canada so this morning we've decided to look at Psalm 100 it's a short Psalm it's a classic Psalm again and let's see what God has in store for us here let's pray well father help us to not be too flippant we've been doing these series this series for a while and Lord let us not come to your word with an arrogance or a pride as if we can mine all the depths of your greatness in your wisdom and your truth lord help us to approach it humbly as students but also as worshippers father help us to exalt you in our and hearts and in our minds as we do this I pray that you'd be here speaking to us guiding our study Lord and that we would come to know you better and be filled with greater faith in these trying times yes is in Jesus name Amen okay so let's jump into Psalm 110 so let me quickly pop open something there on my screen so I could see it there we go oops so let me read it to you Psalm 100 sorry not 110 Psalm 100 make a joyful noise to the Lord all the earth serve the Lord with gladness come into his presence with singing know that the Lord he is God it is he who made us and we are his we are as people the Sheep of his pasture and her his gates with Thanksgiving in his courts with praise give thanks to him bless His name for the Lord is good his steadfast love endures forever and his faithfulness to all generations so it's a fun little Psalm you know it's it's short so I think sometimes we get into the the wrong side of thinking because it's short it must be simple hopefully you're seeing already that that's not the cases we've been going through these Psalms over the last two weeks almost and I guess it's Friday when you're getting this so I just so you know I record these a day in advance to make sure they're all edited and uploaded so it's actually Thursday for me but you're getting this on Friday and you know sometimes we encounter small Psalms and we think they look so straightforward that we don't know if we can get any deeper and I don't know if that's the case let's take a look I think Psalm 100 is is obviously as you look at it as a psalm of thanksgiving no doubt about that I think and I think I picked this up from another scholar I don't remember which one to be honest but there's something I'm seeing here which is I like the breakdown of what I see so verses 1 & 2 verses 3 verses 4 & 5 so we see different things and I think I see if I'm not mistaken here praise instruction praise instruction so I see almost four parts to this and again it's a structure I've seen it and I'm not alone pick this up from a scholar that I recall gosh I can't remember the name wish I could but again I'm not the only one but there's this intentional structure here it seems to be so let's begin at the very top and by the way I think this whole structure by I look at it what it seems to be telling me is that worship is always or it equals emotion and intellect it is a marriage of the two you see because what you know you worship and what you worship you know and we're getting into I think the psalm will show what's that but let's jump in so right away this it opens with great praise make a joyful noise make a joyful noise to the Lord all the earth serve the Lord with gladness so it's incredible make a joyful noise to the Lord all the earth serve the Lord with gladness come into his presence with singing so a few things I noticed right away just by quickly looking at this first of all it's the audible visible worship and I know some churches are more conserve and you don't raise your hands when you worship and I'm not saying you have to I'm simply saying when you're excited it shows whether it's when a sports team wins or whether it's at your birthday or when your child succeeds at something there is usually some sort of visible proof that you're excited there is laughter there are singing there may be dancing there may be smiling only but there is something so while I don't necessarily think you have to be having your arms in the air and and going nuts to be worshiping I think there ought to be some sort of physical manifestation of what's happening inside we are not like ice were you know meant to be stoic don't say like icebergs but it's not like we can hide what's happening and if you are there's a problem there as well so I think there's a joyful noise there's gladness they're singing these are the sounds of worship according to the psalmist I love the fact that he invites all the earth to sing it's an invitation and you know it's an invitation from the people of God because down here he's going to say we are his people remember I've mentioned in Psalm 67 that's when it's the singular tense people it always means Israel and if it's people's it means the world well here you have the people of Israel inviting all of creation all of the world to worship with them so that's against an outworking of praise worship is by its very nature overflowing you know it can't be contained into just one so all the earth is being called serve the Lord with gladness notice the worship so you're worshiping through your service as well and I also love that it says come into his presence with singing which means it's not just that you start singing and worshiping when you get into the church building but that you should be entering into the church building already singing see that come into his presence with singing meaning as you're entering into the presence worship should begin long before you walk into the doors of the church this is a disposition of the heart it's a it's a it's a posture of life for Christians so this is praise and then it moves into why you praise which is the knowledge see it's the pray an instruction called a sermon called preaching whatever you want but there is the heart and the head being engaged so praise worship and you do it by knowing the Lord see when you know of the Lord let me get a better color here know that the Lord he is God it is he who made us and we are his we are as people the Sheep of his pasture it's our knowledge of God that informs our worship you somebody who's singing and worshiping but has no knowledge no right thinking about God doctrine some of the more conservative theologian types will say if you don't know what you're worshipping then you're just worshiping the emotion if you just caught up in emotion but here we're being told very clearly that we need to know and our worship comes from knowing that God is God that he is sovereign there's no other God and isn't that true now something we need to cling to in this covet era it is he who made us he made us he protects us made us equals cares for us protects us and aside from that it means that we are not there's my own thing I won't do that's it you don't get that we are not independent sorry spelling is terrible if we are made it means that we are dependent on him we cling to God we are not to assume that we can live in right living and righteousness and in flourish apart from God he made us we are the Sheep of his pasture so he cares for us as I said so this knowledge of knowing who God is what he has done for us who we are in him who he is to us that is why Psalm or verse 1 and 2 happened we worship because of who we know God to be and then we jump into this this cycle begins again and now you have this worship enter his gates with Thanksgiving same thing as coming to his presence so you enter with Thanksgiving that you're already thankful notice up here the overwhelming sense is noise singing gladness right noise gladness it's audible but here we have something quite different now it is Thanksgiving his courts with praise or I'll make that wood picker we give and we bless his name look at the words now that we're seeing it's not interesting we see Thanksgiving praise thanks bless His name so different the different exiting expression of worship still worship but a different expression here that we do this and then why do we do it again and look at verse five it's phenomenal isn't it closes now let me get a slipper color so it doesn't look quite as soli hmmm for the Lord is good for so fo boy that's a fun word isn't it for because we do all of this because of what we're about to see our worship flows from a real source and that source of course is God so let me see what it says for the Lord is what he is good steadfast love endures forever I'll talk about that and his faithfulness to all generations oh the three-fold reason we worship one his nature by nature he is good is good he's good to us He loves us he serves us he is by nature good his love endures forever and this is that Hebrew word has said which is his covenant faithfulness you know it's not just a fleeting love it's not even an emotional love alone but it's a love rooted in commitment and loyalty meaning he's going to love us regardless of whether he feels like loving us or not if you've been a new city church you've heard me say this before that love is not primarily an emotion but a promise of future love as I think Keller said I've heard somebody say I think is Tim Keller not just the promise of future love but that future love is rooted in a promise today he promises to say I will love you even when I don't feel like loving you this is why when there's things going when he wants in the Old Testament to destroy Israel it says things like and the Lord remembered his covenant with Abraham it means he remembered that he bound himself to you I even when we don't live like we ought to even when he doesn't maybe maybe when he doesn't feel affection towards us he's still by his covenant remains near to us and will will protect us and save us and love us his love endures forever faithfulness to all generations now why qanitin' say I don't need that why can he be trusted for ever you see his love endures forever meaning you can't out sin his grace you can't run from his hand once he's got a hand a grip on you that no man no matter how miserable a follower and a son or daughter you are he still clings to us we can trust his enduring love forever and the reason is Christ because Christ paid the price for all time for us and because he swore by himself remember Genesis 15 and it happens again in Amos and in Isaiah because God swears by himself and says I will bless you and love you even when you're not the people you should be and then he comes and not just promises that but then delivers on that promise by sending his son to die for us to die for us who don't deserve it it means that all of our sin has been paid for so that we can now trust him and this were and that is from where worship Springs you see this is why a new City Church especially and I know a lot of churches we hammer home the gospel every single week if we can't we do our best to do that because you need to know that all of your worship comes precisely because of what God has done for you you don't worship your worship is not rooted in your circumstances it's not worshiped and you don't worship based on whether you have kovat or not or whether you have money or a job those are all very good things and we ought to thank God for them and lament when we lose them totally however our worship ultimately comes from these unchanging forever parts above God's character and his nature and his promises to us that he loves us that he made us I mean look at that he is God he made us we are as people he is our Shepherd although he is good love endures forever his faithfulness to all generations so we worship God because of who he is not because of what we have or what he has given us primarily but because of who he is and that is a maturity it takes some time to get there not everybody gets there quickly or overnight and not many of us probably don't get there for a long time it takes time because there's always so much of our own cells wrapped up in our worship but what what this is getting at is this idea that we sing and we worship not just because of emotion but because of who we know God to be that he is all these things pointed out to us in Psalm 100 and that is what is happening here in Psalm 100 tomorrow well Monday I guess this is Friday when you're getting this so on Monday we will take a look at Psalm 53 it's another lament but it's a good time for laments plus the Psalter is 60% laments so we want to make sure that we are doing some justice here and making sure we cover enough laments to make sure we're getting what the Psalter really is so thanks very much for joining me again again if you've stuck through all of them well done I know it's not easy to to have this sort of stamina but hopefully they're encouraging and you're you're growing in your faith and your knowledge at the same time much like this Psalm where you grow with your head and what you and your and your spirit that you praise and you preach that you savor and you and you enjoy but also think and chew on God hopefully that's what's coming from this series so with that thank you and we'll see you on Monday [Music] you
