Daily Mass for Thursday February 10, 2022

i am like a growing olive tree in the house in the house of god i trust in the mercy of god forever and ever in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray as we celebrate anew the memorial of the virgin scholastica we pray o lord that following her example we may serve you with pure love and happily receive what comes from loving you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever a reading from the first book of kings when solomon was old his wives had turned his heart to strange gods and his heart was not entirely with the lord his god as the heart of his father david had been by adoring astarte the goddess of the syrians and milkham the idol of the ammonites solomon did evil in the sight of the lord he did not follow him unreservedly as his father david had done solomon then built a high place to chemoth the idol of moab and to molech the idol of the ammonites on the hill opposite jerusalem he did the same for all his foreign wives who burned incense and sacrifice to their gods the lord therefore became angry with solomon because his heart was turned away from the lord the god of israel who had appeared to him twice for though the lord had forbidden him this very act of following strange gods solomon had not obeyed him so the lord said to solomon since this is what you want and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes which i enjoined on you i will deprive you of the kingdom and give it to your servant i will not do this during your lifetime however for the sake of your father david it is your son whom i will deprive nor will i take away the whole kingdom i will leave your son one tribe for the sake of my servant david and of jerusalem which i have chosen the word of the lord remember us lord as you favor your people remember us lord as you favor your people blessed are they who observe what is right who do always what is just remember us o lord as you favor your people visit us with your saving help remember us lord as you favor your people but they mingled with the nations and learned their works they served their idols which became a snare for them remember us so lord as you favor your people they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons and the lord grew angry with his people and abhorred his inheritance remember us o lord as you favor your people hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark jesus went to the district of tyre he entered a house and wanted no one to know about it but he could not escape notice soon a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him she came and fell at his feet the woman was a greek a syrophoenician by birth and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter he said to her let the children be fed first for it is it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs she replied and said to him lord even the dogs under the table eat the children's scraps then he said to her for saying this you may go the demon has gone out of your daughter when the woman went home she found the child lying in bed and the demon gone the gospel of the lord yesterday we talked about the importance of not allowing any wretchedness in your heart because it's leads that's where that's where all the problems come from is uh is from when we allow uh well we all have effects of original sin right so we have we have all have some part of our heart that still needs to be purified and we just have to keep working allow the lord to keep working on our hearts so that it's um the prod lifelong project so to speak is to keep pushing out any wretchedness that might be in our heart and that means identifying it too right so we can um so we can have the lord heal it and purify us and make our hearts more like his we also can't uh another word another way to put it is is we can't have a divided heart we can't have parts of our heart that aren't fully the lords and so the parts that are wretched are basically not the lords yet and uh we see that with solomon today his heart as wise as he was as gifted as he was we see that there was something um a miss in his heart and it started to go in the wrong directions and so we have to keep say vigilant right and persevering and sometimes we you know we look at today's gospel and we see the lord in some ways testing this woman's faith and there's a couple ways we can look at it one way is to look at it in a way that questions the lord or doubts the lord which is the way the enemy wants us to look at it so that's a that's a part of our heart that is does not belong to the lord yet right doesn't fully trust doesn't have faith doesn't look at okay the lord i know so the principles i know is the lord is all good all loving he's always working for my salvation for my benefit so this story must be something good he's doing for this woman another way to look at is like wow he's being very insulting very rude that's surprising of jesus to do and why is he testing her you know that's not really nice he should just help her uh and so that's that's a mindset of of assuming the lord might be doing something wrong or bad or hard or what we don't want or that's a doubt doubting the lord and so those are both i think reasonable approaches to this to this gospel that someone could take the lord is being insensitive and being insulting or the lord is doing something good here right what is it that he's doing that's good and so we want our hearts to be in every situation notice where is my heart lord why are you doing this to me or lord help me understand what do you do what's the good you're working out here even though it's hard what's the good you're working out or lord i'm so upset i'm so mad which is we can feel that way sometimes right i can't believe you abandoned me you've done this to me um so one of my and i don't know if i've preached about this here or not i know i've preached about in the past perhaps other places or not but i can't remember if it's here or not but one of my professors from seminary um dr ohm said very of which i've always remembered when we would complain about tests she would say why are you complaining about tests they're your opportunity to show what you know one hand she had confidence in us so that's why she's you know she wants us she wants us to have the experience of having a good test experience and and learning and recognizing what we've learned and and the other hand as a professor as a teacher it's her job to help us grow and and identify where we if we get some some questions wrong then um that needs to be looked at that needs to be addressed right if we're going to keep growing so the tests were not the professor's way of torturing us or making us feel bad or ashamed it was an opportunity to show what we know or an opportunity to see where we need to grow still right and she was going to be there to help us grow and that's what the lord is with us he doesn't test us to see are you going to pass this test or fail are you going to pass this test of faith are you going to fail he wants to reveal where is your heart still needing to be fully his right where the areas so this woman passed the test with flying colors shouldn't pass the test she showed what her faith was right it wasn't about passing or failing a test it was about the lord say i want i want you to i want you to see your faith i want you to see it i want the world to see it right and if she had and maybe others had been tested in this way certainly the rich young man walked away sad right we hope that one day he walked back happy we hope that right we pray for that but it was either way it was good because it revealed what needed to be revealed right so uh where's our heart at today right where's our heart what in our heart what wretchedness needs to be purified what unfaithfulness needs to be revealed and brought to light not so we can fix ourselves but so that we can allow the lord to lovingly bring it to light so it can be healed so that our hearts can be more and more his we bring our needs and the needs of the world to our loving god as we pray for all members of the church may the outpouring of the holy spirit sanctify each one of us in our daily lives let us pray to the lord for leaders of nations throughout the world may the lord grant them wisdom in governing with compassion and fidelity to the truth we pray to the lord for peace and consolation for those who grieve the death of a loved one let us pray to the lord for all the faithful especially for the intentions of mike sliger doug schleicher and john sliger for whom this mass is offered may god give us the grace to remain faithful to him in all we do let us pray to the lord for those who have gone before us in faith may they experience the freedom of god's mercy in the kingdom of heaven let us pray to the lord god our father hear the prayers of your people we ask this in the name of jesus christ our lord amen our prayer for the parish mission on the prayer cards in the pews please join me almighty father once again you are at the door and knock during our parish mission you ask us to open the door of our hearts to your abundant mercy rouse us purify and illumine our hearts enter into every home of our parish recall those far off raise the fallen awaken the indifferent strengthen those who seek to be near you may no one refuse your invitation lord expand our hearts so that we may be merciful to others as you are so merciful to us o mary mother of mercy we entrust to you this time of mission may produce abundant fruits in our christian life amen mary queen of peace saint scholastica blessed you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we receive the bread we offer you fruit of the earth at work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we receive the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it'll become our spiritual drink pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father [Music] we bring the offerings of our devotion to be consecrated by you o lord in commemoration of blessed scholastica for by the consolation you give us in this life you show that we should not lose hope of what is promised for eternity through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in the saints who consecrated themselves to christ for the sake of the kingdom of heaven it is right to celebrate the wonders of your providence by which you call human nature back to its original holiness and bring it to experience on this earth the gifts you promise in the new world to come and so with all the angels and saints we praise you as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and paul our bishop and eusebio his auxiliary bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace lamb of god behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed one thing is necessary she has chosen the better part which shall not be taken away from her [Music] please join me in an act of spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen let us pray renewed oh lord at the wellsprings of salvation we humbly entreat you that through the intercession of blessed scholastica holding more closely day by day to christ we may we may merit to
