the very first thing that I tend to do when I land on a planet in Starfield is Jump it's really important to just get into the habit of doing a couple of test jumps whenever you arrive on a brand new planet as the level of gravity can vary wildly and well you don't want to discover that you can't jump very high during combat it's a little tip that I wish I knew about before I started playing Star field and now that I've got a fair few hours under my belt here's about 50 more on a low gravity Planet sprinting forward and then boosting is a really great way to cover distances while recovering stamina and oxygen you can enjoy some pretty cool alternate dialogue during the game's Intro by sprinting ahead of supervisor Lin picking up the laser and just mining the beryllium before she's even had the chance to introduce it in that starting Cavern though there are hidden deposits of rare neodymium buried in a little alcove under the bridge so make sure you grab it healing items are automatically assigned to the d-pads down button as a shortcut so you don't actually need to go reaching into your inventory whenever you get hurt bear in mind Med packs don't actually heal you you instantly but they do restore a fair chunk of your health over time now most of the time food does heal instantly but not by very much so be sure to pack lots of it with you as well as restoring your health some of these rations also provide other Buffs like Solomon's Reserve which gives you plus 80 damage resistance for about three minutes tasty oxygen recovers automatically over time but you'll be hit by debuffs if you let it run out completely once you run out of oxygen CO2 gets used as you can see by this red bar and once that fills any stamina consuming action causes you to take damage so be careful and catch your breath something worth bearing in mind is you can actually still sneak around and perform sneak attacks without investing in the stealth skill you just won't have a meter indicating how aware of you the enemies are either way it's a good idea to dismiss your companion first before attempting anything stealthy and if you don't fancy any of starfield's backgrounds during the Character Creator or you just want your character to be the ultimate mysterious Wanderer you could choose file not found but don't worry you'll still begin with a couple of basic starting skills Wellness ballistics and piloting if you're a bit of a serial looter like I've been well you can actually get your companions to hold on to excess items for you it's a great way to increase your carry capacity although the items they're holding won't appear when you're at a crafting station however if you store stuff in your ship's cargo holds which by the way is another great way to lighten your load those things will appear when you're at a crafting station speaking of your ship any crew that's on there can also have their inventory accessed so you could use them as extra cargo space too after a big Scavenging hunt you should always drop off all of your resources whenever you're back at your ship if you look to the right as you leave the Frontiers cockpit you'll find a panel that lets you manage the ship's inventory head into resources and hit RB to deposit all the ones you're carrying at once I know they might take a portion of your income but honestly having parents with the kids stuff trait provides all sorts of advantages I mean honestly it might actually be a bit op for example one Quest will see your dad just giving you a special pistol because he's an old friend of the University Dean others can also end up giving you armor or even ships now once you've been introduced to the people at constellation you'll actually get your own room and in that room you'll find an old copy of Moby Dick you should definitely pick it up since it's worth 590 credits plus it's also just a really really good book similarly the old Earth baseball on the frontier your first ship is worth about 655 credits it can be found just above the bed keep your eyes peeled for some other reading materials too because there are booklets magazines and pamphlets scattered throughout the Galaxy which can provide permanent stat boosts kind of like comics in Fallout 4. these don't glow or anything so look around really carefully or you might miss some easy advantages like permanent missile damage boosts Starfield is a massive game so from time to time you might get a little bit lost but in scanner mode if you press lb you'll see a route to your next Quest marker also I know it looks weird but I'm actually invisible here because my spacesuit has a special ability become invisible when staying still look out for these when picking up suits because some of them have some incredible perks on them in your scanner modes you may also see icons that say unknown on them when on a planet's surface if you press a while looking at them it'll actually tell you what kind of sight it is like natural or just a structure but the first icons you should head towards when exploring a new planet are the ones indicating ship wreckages and caves since these are the places you're most likely to find Med packs and other nice loot speaking of caves if you hold down left bumper that's going to turn on your flashlight which is ideal for finding storage containers Rare Minerals and other Treasures that are lurking in dark caves also use your scanner because it highlights items that you can interact with feels really obvious to say but Starfield is a space game so there are zero gravity environments and they're gonna have you floating around in a really peculiar way and it basically makes stealth almost impossible but it also means that firing any ballistic weapon will send you flying backwards so either switch to something laser or plasma based or just get ready for the recoil this one's a really fun new feature but worth knowing a bit about persuasion actually works through a dialogue mini game where you'll have to make a series of choices Each of which are assigned to an amount and a difficulty you're basically trying to fill the bar at the bottom and you only have a certain number of turns to do it always go for the easier options first just to create a base on the bar and make it easier for you later in the conversation if you're really thorough when questing you'll also be able to use information that you've picked up elsewhere to your advantage here allowing you to Auto persuade it's either a blue option in the dialogue or you could just use Auto persuade which will be completely circled in blue while there are items like hippolyta that can also give your persuasive abilities just a temporary boost as for boosts well boosting in your Starship during combat is fun but you should probably save it since it's one of the best ways to shake off an enemy missile Lock And if you find yourself getting chewed up in every dogfight make sure you switch to third person mode by pressing the view button sometimes it helps just making Starship fighting way easier after your ship has been banged up a bit you'll actually be able to repair it at most civilian Outpost for just a thousand credits and you'll also find Mission boards if you want to earn some of those credits back doing little jobs here and there like transporting miners from cydonia early in the game is a really quick way to make money and it will also help you fill out your star map providing you with more places to jump to this one is so important for ship combat and I always kick myself when I forget but if you see Parts anywhere make sure you grab them because you actually use them during space combat to repair your ship's Hull but they do weigh quite a lot 10 Mass each so be sure to drop them off into your ship's cargo as soon as you can in Starship fighting you have six options for where to route your power to normally it'll be things like engines Shields grav drive and your weapons do not take away anything from your Shield especially early in the game it's just not worth it and you'll get blown to Smithereens you can keep your grav Drive clear unless you're of course needing to power it up because otherwise it's just sitting there wasted when you probably could have powered up your weapons but if the dogfight is getting a bit too hectic power up your grab drive and you can actually jump away from combat to be fair though the one you get with the starter ship at the front here isn't really strong enough to do one that quickly anyway now I bet a bunch of you would make this mistake if I didn't tell you about it but let's say you've just picked up a boost pack but you can't seem to actually boost well that'll be because you also need to spend a skill point on Boost pack training which is in the tech section on the basic tier you'll then be able to rank this up with more uses but it's pretty essential as an early skill so pick it up straight away and it comes in really handy if you use your Boost in the nicker time and can save yourself from taking full damage but be careful though because if you miss time it you'll actually sprain your ankle and have to deal with the status effect super annoying the Boost pack is also great for hot footing it away from landmines while boosting up into the air and shooting down or chucking a few nades is a really great way to deal with swarming enemies as well as providing you with the pleasure of their company your companions will sometimes give you gifts which actually becomes more likely as you grow closer to them Barrett just seems to be giving me really tasty food all the time oh and you can also flirt with them too if you're into that well uh I I enjoy hearing about them professionally of course but let's say you're feeling a bit shy in dialogue well you can have a companion speak on your behalf and you even get to choose their dialogue option they actually tend to like this too which makes your bond grow stronger so it's almost always an advantageous option doing side missions before story ones can have unexpected benefits for example if you take the opportunity to rescue you see Captain May Yong early on they'll actually reward you with a new knife when the story takes you to piazi one this one's actually pretty funny and you even get paid for it if you head to the settled systems News Network in new Atlantis after completing a big mission you can actually earn credits by telling their lead researcher how it went oh and you don't even have to be completely truthful either if you want to make yourself seem like the hero you'll later hear your story being broadcast exactly how you described it in built up areas if after spending about 30 hours in the Character Creator you've actually realized that you just don't look very good at all you could just head to enhance on new Atlantis where you can redesign your character for 500 credits pretty cheap you might want to inquire about their policy on doctor-patient confidentiality though no a lot of people have actually been asking about this and yes it is possible to work for every single faction at the same time so don't actually feel restricted to just one try and remember to keep an eye on what weapons your companions have equipped and just be sure to upgrade their Firepower from time to time they actually only need one ammo to use any weapon you want to give them but do make sure that you've actually equipped it for them otherwise they'll just be holding it useless the shipbuilder can actually be a bit overwhelming if you're not too sure what you're doing but there's actually a quick option called ship upgrades that allows you to just upgrade the components that are already installed instead let's chat a bit about research and crafting for a sec there's a mechanic called overflow that sometimes allows you to actually research things even if you don't have all of the necessary resources and there are skills that can actually improve the chance of this happening for the Explorers out there if you take a complete ecological survey of a planet you'll be rewarded with a survey slate you can just sell it to any vendor but your former pirate Power Vladimir who's stationed on the eye near Jemison will pay a mighty good premium for it and it's not exactly the standard Zoological practice but you can actually kill fauna first and then scan them you'll still get all the same info plus you can Harvest their carcass for valuable resources quite a lot of the research projects do require you to invest a skill point into a particular skill before you're allowed to pursue them for example you're not going to be able to research better spacesuits or pack mods until you spent a point on space suit design if you need certain materials for crafting or research projects pressing X will actually track those ingredients and resources so that when you see them in the wild a big blue magnifying glass will appear right next to them very helpful anytime you approach a major settled Planet you'll be scanned by the local authorities for Contraband and you'll have to pay a fine or fight your way out if they find anything however there are shielded cargo holds which allow you to smuggle your stuff through undetected there are also certain perks which increase your chances of sneaking it by as well you might have seen that there is lock picking and there is a lock picking skill but you actually don't need the skill to pry open novice level locks but you will need to sync skill points into it if you want to take on the tougher ones just like in Fallout unlike Fallout and the Elder Scrolls these locks work totally differently as a mini game if you're not too sure about digipex just try leaving them in place before you actually commit them then cycle through the picks to find the shapes that fill the gaps undoing a slot costs a digipex so this way you aren't actually being as wasteful see this right here that's a cred stick yeah pick it up at a glance they might look like worthless junk but they actually all contain credits obviously your health bar will begin to turn yellow when you've been on the surface of a dangerous planet for too long and it's damaging your suits like if there's extreme heat or acidic rain the mechanic Works a bit like fallout's RADS only this time around the effect will disappear once you're back in a safe place obviously I've been a bit naughty sometimes while playing Star fields and yes I did get caught a few times and ended up with a bounty on my head but the quickest way to just get rid of it is to head to a self-service Bounty clearance terminal where you pay off conveniently you'll find these are most Spaceport bars pretty much every planet surface can have outposts built on them and if you built a resource extractor it will just continually mine resources while you're away that's passive income baby just make sure you return frequently to empty them otherwise they'll get full and stop working now let's say time is of the essence for whatever you're up to you can often fast travel directly to the relevant area via the menu you don't even need to be in your ship just point straight down and press X to set a course and you'll fly over there this is a great way to earn progress in your skills without actually exposing yourself to any real danger there is a UC simulation found in New Atlantis you don't actually earn XP but you will make progress in the piloting skill challenges just earn some XP from elsewhere and you can just slot them straight into the skills you might hear Whispers of something called a terramorph and you should approach these in Starfield the exact same way you should approach death clause in Fallout and by that I mean you should not approach them at all unless you absolutely have to [Music] directly if you can avoid it yeah what she said there are alternate ways to unlock some of the game's skills including Master Level ones for example while I was doing some jobs for reugent Industries I eventually got granted the manipulation skill without me actually having to spend dozens of hours working my way up the social section of the skill tree and the fact that working for ryujin also entails loads of credits and gear is also a nice bonus too as for all you Pirates out there I've got one last tip you can claim a ship into your Fleet just by Landing with it and this will also move all of your cargo over to your new ship your previous home ship will then be added into your Fleet and you can recall it at any time you feel like switching back oh and even if the cargo hold isn't big enough to take it it'll just do it anyway nice well keep these tips in mind and you'll be able to travel the stars without fear when Starfield comes to game pass on September 6th bye
