Star Wars Jedi fallen order is a surprising game in a lot of ways at first glance you probably think it's a Force Unleashed retread filled with bombastic action and Star Destroyer boss fight action and yeah it's got plenty of action shirt but it's also got a whole hell of a lot of exploration much of the game is actually spent in quiet solitude as you make your way through the idyllic scenery at least until the Empire shows up and starts blowing everything up you are not star killer in this one even the lowliest stormtrooper can take you out so if you want to have a fighting chance in a galaxy far far away then keep watching because we're talking ten things that Star Wars Jedi fall in order doesn't tell you starting off at number 10 it's a lot like Dark Souls I know that's practically a cliche at this point but for this game it's true if you are a Dark Souls veteran you will feel right at home in this game and if you're not you'll get the experience of exploration and the mostly seamless gameplay without the overwhelming challenge but seriously it's really really like Dark Souls let's count the ways you've got bonfires meditation points which work exactly the same way if you're killed by an enemy which will happen this game isn't dark souls or that doesn't mean it's easy if you're killed by an enemy you lose your accumulated experience and have to get it back from the enemy that killed you so in that way it's kind of a bit more like blood-borne but blood-borne it's like Dark Souls so whatever there are actually mechanics taken from pretty much all of Fromm's recent games you even get Estus flasks thankfully in this one you really just have to get one hit in on the enemy that killed you in order to get your experience back so in that regard it's a little nicer especially for new players but here's the thing I say it's like Dark Souls but you know what this game is really like second row from latest game there is a strong focus on platforming you play as a single character with a single weapon well not entirely we'll get into more about that later and you can pair it that's the big one actually pairing is a big big thing in this game if you're not willing to get a cousin with pairing that's kind of a deal-breaker for this game which if you're unfamiliar a pairing is blocking at the right moment before an enemy attacks in order to create an opportunity for counter-attack and if you can't hack it then it's possible the game won't be a lot of fun for you a lot of people struggled with second row for this very reason and it's understandable it can be hard it can be unforgiving and although this game is a little bit more forgiving the timing is actually a little trickier than second-row that being said if you stick with it the game eventually gives you a lot of abilities so you don't necessarily have to be a master payer to get through it basically what I'm saying here is this this game has got a lot of Dark Souls elements but don't let it discourage you if you're not used to playing games like that though it is challenging fallen order may be the most accessible and welcoming game in that genre and it's great for people who don't have a lot of experience with these types of games moving on to number 9 now if you are a Dark Souls veteran or just interested in how the combat works let's talk some combat tips attack heavy attack force powers dodge and parry when I said you'd be parrying a lot in this game I wasn't kidding there are a couple of reasons why first thing dodging is closer to second arrow than other Dark Souls games you're not gonna get a lot of invincibility frames when you dodge and you don't travel very far when you do dodging in this game is really only used to avoid unblockable attacks which are telegraphed when the enemy turns red and they're also used for avoiding certain attacks that can be blocked but our best avoided everything else you should just parry like assume you got a parry it's important to get accustomed to parry timing as soon as you can so when you get the opportunity with some stormtroopers just practicing it's a little tough getting used to because the block is an instantaneous like some other games there's a few frames between when you hit the block button and when Jedi boy actually raises his weapon so anticipate the attacks with the force I guess when you see that red flash that means an attack is incoming and you should probably start pairing another thing don't get into the habit of tapping the block button to parry it doesn't work and it just makes you more likely to get hit it's really all about timing and thankfully at lower difficulties the timing window becomes a little more forgiving so if you're frustrated just lower the difficulty which is something you can do in game at any time moving on to number 8 speaking of let's talk difficulty levels this game has a slightly unusual system outside the fact that it has a difficulty selection which is something you really don't see a lot in souls likes what actually changes between the difficulties is how easy it is to parry how much damage you take and how a if the enemies are the last aspect of that is actually really cool because you could really tell the difference on story the enemies are super timid they don't attack much they're pretty easy to avoid well on Jedi Master they get on you and they don't let up here's my recommendations for difficulty levels depending on what kind of player you are if you're a Dark Souls and second-row veteran you're probably gonna want to do Jedi Master it's not as hard as those games but it matches up a lot better like the enemy aggressiveness is similar to those games as is the kind of damage you'll be taking if you're more into casual action games or just don't want to deal with that kind of difficulty level Jedi Knights probably the better difficulty level for you the game's not like ridiculously easy remember we're comparing it to Dark Souls here not the hardest game of all time but certainly not in the spectrum that we would call easy the Grand Master difficulty is kind of for masochists the parry timing is super strict and enemies hate you so I'd say try to play it on Jedi Master feels like the difficulty the developers intended of course that is just my suggestion moving on to number 7 here's another really important combat tip just it doesn't involve combat directly these kinds of games require split-second timing and if you're on a ps4 Pro or an Xbox one X you're gonna want to go into the options menu and turn on performance mode the options off by default which makes the game look better but it does not run at a consistent 60 frames per second and believe me you're gonna want that to keep up obviously if you're on PC you won't have this option and you just need to do whatever it takes to get the game running at 60 frames per second if you got the game on highest level and it's running at 60 frames per second don't do anything it looks great but split-second timing is practically a requirement for this game and performance mode really should have been on by default because the game just runs way better and the visuals barely look any different this really does make a big difference because the game is fast so it needs to run fast moving on to number 6 is even more combat tips it's almost like they didn't tell you a whole lot about the combat well actually what we're talking about in this one is the skill tree you don't have attributes to invest in it's literally skills what are the best skills to buy starting out well I would say anything in the survival tree period at the start of the game your health is bad and you cannot block so put points in vitality ASAP it will help big-time in beginning hours while you're still getting your bearings with the controls in the game itself and you might actually be able to survive getting attacked by these insanely aggressive riots look these guys are the most aggressive Reds in video games Dark Souls rats got nothing on these guys moving on to five just a quick spoiler warning on this one nothing major but we're going to get pretty specific about something you don't know about so be warned only one more related to combat promise you but it is cool there's a pretty sweet upgrade that you can get for your lightsaber that the game probably expects you to get after many many hours but you can get it right from the moment the planet it's on becomes available to visit this would be the double-sided lightsaber an awesome upgrade that is so so good for dealing with large groups both close range and far away you get it on Dathomir which becomes available after visiting the Jedi Temple on Boggan oh now you're supposed to go to Zeppo next as it's much easier but if you're willing to run past some enemies who are way tougher than you then go to Dathomir once there follow the path from your ship and jump and grab one of the hanging vines follow them until you get to a clearing then head right climb up twice continue right and then you will need to wall run past a bug to get up a ledge oh yeah you're getting specific instructions on this one it's just too cool not to now you turn right wall run and turn right onto the platform that leads towards the entrance of the ruin just keep going until you trigger a cutscene run past the two goons swing on the ropes then head up the stairs once at the top turn around and keep running you'll find a room with a fire pit and another staircase go up that turn left in the quarter past the stairs then take another left into a room you'll have to wall run in and get up and out of I'm sorry that I'm putting you through this now fall down turn left go down the winding wall then turn right when you get to a clearing now fall down turn around and follow that path until you get to a workbench which is where you will get the double-sided lightsaber it is a ridiculous set of instructions but you will not regret going ahead and doing it it's not hard just avoid the enemies you can't beat them right now and it's just a really cool upgrade number four speaking of things you can get early here's something you're really really gonna want having to health stems just isn't gonna cut it so if you want to know where the earliest health stim upgrade is just follow along go to zepho you know the planet you're supposed to and find this area where two rats are hanging out outside the abandoned hangar area right where your ship is landed there's a cave in this spot go inside it use your lightsaber to light the way and follow the winding paths inside to find this easy to miss stem upgrade crate this will bump your healing items from two to three which make the next areas so much more manageable here it is on the map to make it easier to find it's not too far off from where you land so go moving on to number three there's one last item to look for that's really worth finding early have you seen chests like these that say you can't open them without getting an upgrade for bd1 well thankfully that upgrade isn't too hard to get and you can get it relatively early if you know where to look the upgrade called the scomp link can be found after getting the force push ability which is basically your main objective the first time you visit zepho go to the zapo tomb get the force push ability and then return to the weathered monument save point from there look for a crack door nearby that you can push open which leads to an imperial base area you just platform through this section and you find the scomp link again here it is on the map to give you a better look once you've got this you can open any red chests and hack any of these Imperial doors so having this actually opens up a lot of things immediately and just makes it so you don't it to backtrack for a lot of chests well at least not as much and at number two we've been talking a lot about how this game is similar to Dark Souls but there's other elements that are surprisingly similar to another famous PlayStation series you can probably guess but I'm gonna say uncharted like look you're swinging slidin tomb raiding shimming on ledges and this sequence right out of an uncharted game I know second arrow has a lot of platforming in it as well but the jumping and climbing is functionally a lot closer to what people are calling spectacle platformers we're traversing the environment in different ways as a major part of the gameplay and I don't want to undersell this just getting around stuff climbing around jumping sliding it's as much as part of the game is and I slicing is this isn't a pure beat'em up and a big part of the exploration is tied up in the platforming segments so if you don't like uncharred its brand of freewheeling rope swinging and wall climbing you might not like this game actually that said I think this game controls extremely well it's very smooth and the platforming segments though numerous are generally cleverly built and interesting they're always introducing some new wrinkle or different challenge to break things up and thankfully fall damage is pretty low so falling off one of the many many bottomless pits isn't punished too strongly so even though that's different from these souls born formula I think the platforming works pretty well in this game and finally at number one the final tip exploration is King and I know that might seem unnecessary to say but I think it's key to enjoying the game the environments are big they're diverse and they're full of stuff there's always something new to find not everything you'll find is great in fact most of what you get in chests is cosmetic stuff to customize your lightsaber and don't actually affect the performance in combat but you're just as likely to find an item that will upgrade your health or allow access to an area way before you're supposed to or fight off an enemy way above your level for bragging rights the game isn't completely linear and it handles it in a very interesting and good way in my opinion it actually lets you get off the beaten path and find stuff on your own and that's one of its greatest strengths though I will say there are differences in taste some may find it liberating while some might find it frustrating either way use the map and it's not just that you need the map it's that the map is actually very good it actually shows obstacles like cracked walls or D power generators and tells you if you have the power to get through them or not and there is a lot of them so if you've heard us describe this game as kind of a Metroidvania ask game on this channel elsewhere this is why and I think that although you can see like a lot of different influences at all times the some is kind of greater than its parts it is very much its own thing so if you get stuck or you're having trouble in a fight just explore there's usually something else to do or something to find that can make things easier for you have you played Jedi fallen order yet we're pretty impressed with it honestly but would love to what you think so leave us
