in this video we're going to talk about why the a7r5 might be a camera you want to consider for video as well as photo for a few reasons I just got back from the Sony creative space event in New York City and while consuming a lot of pizza we've got a couple of days Hands-On with the a7r5 got to run around New York City shooting some stuff with it and I got a few of us thinking about how this is a very capable video camera as well as being a predominantly Stills based camera and the first one that was immediately evident to me was the way that the screen rotates we're used to the flippy screen on the a7s3 here but now we have a vertical whatever that cut is called where it flips up that way as well it's crazy blippi screen crazy so it's a screen that can do the Best of Both Worlds there are times when that screen will actually get in the way so having a screen that can go that way as well is going to be pretty handy on top of that the screen has had a massive increase in the number of dots that's on the back of it which means essentially it's higher resolution previously we had 1.4 million dot screens and it doesn't sound like that huge amount of difference but when you try it first hand you'll see exactly what I mean it's immediately evident just looks so much nice it has a pop to it that you just didn't have before with the screens on the the A7 S3 or the fx3 now the fx30 actually has this same 2.1 million dot screen on it as well now so I'm kind of hoping that this is an indication of what we are going to be getting on all future Sony cameras hopefully fingers crossed the Ibis has gone up to an incredible eight stops and that is body only that's not combined with anything you might have inside of a lens as well so if you want to shoot handheld you now very easily can I mean I always short handheld with the A7 S3 as well but this is just this is a level above that now we're not at the point where we can replace a gimbal yet but we are getting we're stepping in the right direction looking at some of this video on the screen right here you'll see exactly what I mean this is completely handheld using the eight stops of in-body stabilization I believe this was with the 24 to 70 as well so there is no OSS built into that lens it just was obviously better even on the back of those little tiny screens how much better the stabilization was compared to anything we've had before in the Sony body it might not be for everyone but I can definitely see a use for this there's times a wedding things while I have a second camera with me just kind of on my shoulder for little pickup shots and I will shoot handheld and I can see myself using this a lot we're on the 16th floor of my hotel room here looking down stabilization right now is turned off we're at 70 mil watch as soon as I turn stabilization on now we're on I'm moving the camera around ever so slightly and there's no movement hello if you are watching this and you get any value out of it or if you like it just hit that subscribe button down below maybe a little thumbs up as well it does help believe me and worst case if you decide you don't like me or anything I post just unsubscribe yeah 4K 60 on there 10 bit 422 much like you do with the A7 S3 and the fx3 however there is a 1.2 x crop on there stabilization will work within those modes as well and you will have a little tiny 0.1x crop on top of that if you choose to use the stabilization and there is no 4K 120 on this I don't shoot 4K 120 anymore but you do have something that I'm pretty interested to try out more and that's 8K up to 24 frames and 30 frames per second with a little crop on there as well of 1.24 X now 8K people think oh you don't need 8K you don't need that resolution and I 100 agree the thing 8K gets you is flexibility with cropping and reframing in post now this is something we were used to before when we used to Output everything in 1080P and a lot of people still do as well but I put most of my stuff into 4K and when you're shooting 4K you really don't have that much play to zoom in and still have a decent quality if you shoot an 8K for a shot like this I can now crop in substantially and still have 4K quality so what that means is for a talking headshot like this you could potentially have what looks like two separate angles at 4K when it's actually just one wide shot like this and if you are still output into 1080p then you can do a lot more also bear in mind that vertical content at least for me is now a huge part of my workflow it's a lot of what I shoot and if you shoot 8K wide you can still have a lot more flexibility to move and reframe everything if you're outputting to a vertical timeline so that might be something you want to consider if not for anything else 8K very useful for cropping for vertical video now I know what the 8K is there is no stabilization unless you want to use Catalyst browse it still records the gyro data so you'd have to do that in post and it is 10 bit but it is only four to zero not four two two now you also have super 35 mode within this camera in 4k something we don't have on the a7s3 or on the fx3 which I'm shooting with right now that was because of the sensor there's obviously a different sensor in this camera so you can now shoot in super 35 mode in 4k so all of your lenses have 1.5 times more reach if you needed to get that reach out of them if you didn't have the right lens with you or if you're at a wedding something I do a lot and you need a little bit more zoom you can do that there is times when it hands quite a lot for me and this is something that I missed hugely when I came from the A7 III originally and the a74 had it as well and it's a very useful feature for very specific situations it's not going to be for everybody but I know I would love to have this feature back now you don't unfortunately have 4K 60 in super 35 mode it only goes up to 30 frames per second but I'll take that over not having it I believe the only camera that can do 4K 60 with that super 35 mode is the A1 but that is like 2 000 2500 more than what the a7r5 costs now in the new chip within the A7 R5 there is a lot of AI going on when it comes to the autofocus Sony has implemented a bunch of things which makes it way more accurate for Birds animals cars like all kinds of things but there's also this really cool feature you can do which is a way of registering faces so I've personally had it happen to me where I'm shooting a wedding and you've got that sharp there or the bride in the groom and it doesn't really know who to focus on you tap on the one and it it does stay locked on there but it might jump to the other person's face what you can actually do is register a face within the camera and then tell it to only focus on that person you gotta go down to the autofocus tab subject recognition and then you're going to go to face memory and then you press the the plus sign to register somebody's face so I'm going to go ahead and take a picture of you Chris now your face is registered you can register up to seven uh faces and then if you want to select one subject just tap on that person and it'll track them the entire time so it's now recognized Sydney's face so if anyone walks in front of the frame now it should just stay focused on Sydney's face so if any of you can come closer it's white box on Sydney's face still this is going to be super beneficial for weddings that's pretty cool you guys are crazy I feel like this is the beginning of something that we're going to start to see Sony do more and more of and I really would expect to see a lot of software updates within this camera and this kind of functionality being all of the Sony cameras moving forwards because I mean it's been going on forever now on the iPhone it's only a matter of time before we get that computational AI side of things within our mirrorless cameras as well so I'm I'm happy to see what Sony's uh is experimenting with and trying out here in case you're wondering yes you still have s-log 3 yes you have a cinetone you've got your dedicated modes for photo and video just like the a74 you can flick that switch there and go between both have custom settings for each one so if you're shooting in log and then you go to photos it doesn't take the log settings and then you're shooting your photos in log you can separate those out you've got the new fx3 fx30 style menus which are very welcome you don't have cine EI I mean kind of for obvious reasons really that would really take away from some of Sony's other cameras but you do have the focus mapping and focus breathing compensation on there from the A7 4. everything you had with your a7s3 and the fx3 in terms of codex you have on the a7r5 now the big thing to be aware of here is the iso performance you have dual based isos on this camera of 800 and 2500 that's not like on the A7 S3 where it's 800 and then 12 800 or 640 and 12800 on the fx3 based off what I've seen low light performance up to 12 800 is going to be similar to what you get with the A7 for so in those mid-tier isos if you're at like 5 000 you'll probably see better performance with this camera with the A7 R5 than you will with the A7 S3 or the fx3 if you're at an ISO of 5000. now at 12 800 either of these cameras the fx3 or a7s3 are going to clean up and have less noisy images but up to 12 800 the a7r5 is going to be very capable for those lesser light situations so depending on what your usage is if you're looking for a much higher megapixel count camera the a7r5 has a lot of the core functionality of video features that I use and as a b or c camera to something like the fx3 you might find fine this is a camera that offers you a ton of value and I think I'm Really Gonna sell the A7 S3 to replace it with this a7r5 because of the potential that this camera has and the price that it really is going for I can probably sell this and maybe put in a couple hundred bucks and get that camera that's what I'm thinking right now we have till December to find out but that's that I'll see in the next one take care
