snorkel mask to respirator conversion

hi my name is Randi Rainey I want to put together a quick video hopefully it's helpful to somebody right now and what the point is of this we want to make a respirator out of a facemask made for snorkeling right this is a full face mask for snorkeling this is the North which I believe is a subsidy subsidiary of Honeywell this is the 7600 it's a full face respirator I use this to build surfboards and paddle boards thousands of them I have a few of these around there all unfortunately in this kind of condition lots of paint epoxy and all kinds of nasty stuff all over them if you want to know how to use this thing to build it or when you're wear it when you're building a surfboard I'm your guy but I'm not a healthcare professional or even close to it so please check your facts but I'm just again trying to help out and we want to get the word out there that this is a possibility and there I know for a fact tens and tens of thousands of these out in the market if not hundreds of thousands but point is they work very well now the main difference in these two pieces of equipment right here is the filter cartridge and the inlet being on the front here and going through filter there and being on the back here and not being filtered only a one-way water valve keeps water from going in but when you're breathing in but does not obviously filter in any such way so main difference being these cartridges and some kind of filter and I want to mention if you can get your hands on one of these and there's a need and there's a down-and-dirty quick need where you just want to get something filtered there are lots of great sites I'm sure you've seen by now that have alternatives to you know surgical masks and what kind of materials you can use and soaking them in salt in all kinds of great information check check your facts out there and you can definitely take filter media and just wrap it around this entire snorkel side and that's a quick good to go filter for you again depends on what kind of media filter media you have available for different types of nonwovens I've seen you know where doctors in case are using tissues inside of their usable masks and you know air conditioner filters and fish tank filters and all kinds of crazy stuff so just be careful check your facts that hopefully they're there options right at hand if you need them otherwise what I'm going to work on is being able to get this cartridge this type of cartridge on this type of mask and and so let's talk about the cartridges for a second this again is by Honeywell there are lots of different brands and there are lots of different types we've been hearing lots about in 95 these days so you'll see maybe you can see this is a P 100 L in R and P or the first part of what this code means the N is not very oil resistant and all the technical terms are going to show you generally what they mean the R is more oil resistant the P is as oil resistant as you can get in this type of filter and then obviously we have the in 95 again that you're familiar with so there's 95 generally 95 99 and 100 represents the percentage of particulates that they'll block in some form on their scale I don't know all the detail about it but I do know that there's nothing there's no such thing as a 100 so even though there's 95 is 95 percent 99 and 99% a hundred is 99.9 percent so they say there are different types of materials that that they're made to block based on the color well part of the coating is also the color so you can tell by by that code we were just reading you can tell by the color they'll list believe this says somewhere on about the organic vapor again I used it for parts of the surfboard painting and building process where we dealt with some really nasty organic vapors so and they work very well you mean you go into a place that just smells really really bad if you ever been around a surfboard shop and you know you can't taste it or smell it in any way breathing through the mats so great filters there are in 95 so if that's what you want you know the point is if you have an in 95 or R 95 or a P 95 or 99 or 100 you're good right within 95 being the minimum so you can find these cartridges online all over the place Honeywell different you know Granger different different industrial supply sites still have them you can also find plenty of these again this is Malian sons body love you name the water sports brand they probably have a version of this full face mask a type of snorkel mask so getting on to it what we want to do now is we want to take this snorkel off and there is a rubber bushing on this one be very careful with that make sure that stays in place that's providing some make it tight for you there so what we're going to do is I'm going to carefully slice this piece off I don't need this water check valve and this is big it's kind of heavy I'm gonna get rid of that right so I went and did that I made a little mark right here and I safely with a hacksaw or a angle grinder in my case or you know whatever you want go ahead and cut this off so we're making this look like this got it okay so this piece I'm done with and throw that away and this this is what I'm going to create the seal on and be able to attach my cartridge to so if you're lucky you know and shouldn't say lucky but if you can get to a hardware store if you can get to a Lowe's or Home Depot comm or Walmart com have this thing sent to you if there's time for all that this is the best way to go this is really awesome it's ready to go in this case for this particular mask and this snorkel it's just plug and play so I've got a one and a half inch by a one and quarter inch and all I'm going to do in this case this won't give you a little view of that but I'm gonna insert that I'm gonna keep the screw on the flat side I'm gonna push it all the way in and I already nearly have a seal a complete seal but obviously when I tighten this down I'm gonna have a good seal I may go the extra step of putting some kind of poxy tape or water sealing if you've seen the plumbing repair tapes and that kind of stuff just to be a hundred percent sure maybe even after I've gotten it all tightened down I've checked it out I'm gonna probably drop it in the water just I'm gonna make sure everything is sealed a hundred percent you know and double-check it with a few minutes of caution but right now I'm just trying to get through this for you as quick as possible so that is my coupling looks like this right and so it's an inch and a half on this side and we've got the three quarter inch on that side important note there on these these Honeywell or North cartridges this opening is three-quarter inch that one of us should already put something in there so let me show you this one 3/4 inch right so that's why this is 3/4 inch so that I can use either this is a sprinkler riser for sprinkler irrigation systems this is just a regular coupling I guess you call it about a hundred percent sure I'm not a plumber so we can use all kinds of different things all different versions of it I'm going to use this 75 cent riser so I've cut one up and I have my different pieces here I'm going to put a one piece in here and I'm gonna go for the the to filter option I can't just do that right connect that whoops like that and I'm good to go I've got one cartridge for some reason these come with two I guess it's just about air flow and maybe comfort I'm not a ten percent sure why they do that but I'm gonna go ahead and make this mask with two as well for two cartridges so I'm going to insert part of my riser here done thatalready to save some time I'm going to insert cut off and insert another piece of the riser here I'm going to insert another piece here I'm gonna tell on tape everything I'm going to tighten it you know very tight just like the screws here on the fasteners not doing that at this moment just to again get through it quickly for you so I've got my riser I've got my tree that's all three quarter-inch connecting them there alright and then I'm gonna take a cartridge was gonna pull one off of here take that cartridge I'm gonna screw it on to the other part of the riser I stuck in there I would probably make these a little longer if I'm going to do this with more care but that definitely works and then I've already got a piece of the riser inside this one so I'm just going to screw that on and that definitely works again sealant tight sealing sealing very very tight but there we go so I've got a turn my snorkel into a filter cartridge holder and I'm gonna put that on my mask and push it all the way down I'm a clamp that that that tight it's it's airtight but you know they're made to be watertight airtight under water under a little bit of water a little bit of pressure so they they do work seal everything test it in the water if you can so you don't dip your cartridges in the water but you can put a plug on there put it in the water blow in it make sure there no bubbles coming out of anywhere they're not supposed to be you know all kinds of ways you can test it but I would I would do so but this is a functioning respirator and there's very little difference in what we've got here and here now I'm not before my surf shaper buddy used to get mad at me I'm not advocating that we replace this with this this has all kinds of great benefits for the industrial use of painting and in doing that kind of thing emergency situation I'm hoping this helps somebody I know again there are tens of thousands of these out there and you can find them online right now for not a whole lot of money and you can quickly make them into a fully functioning respirator where you can change out the cartridges choose the cartridges that you need change them out after a while and hopefully this helps somebody please pass it on if it does and if you have any questions I will try and answer them
