multitude of situations like emergency relief homeless housing camping getaway or military post their shelters feature a dome-shaped design consisting of hard sided composite panels inter shelter dome is a frameless structure with the strength of a standard building but the mobility of a tent one dome can be assembled by two people in less than four hours with nothing more than a screwdriver wrench and a step ladder enter shelter's 50-year lifespan and ability to withstand 40 feet of snow in 160 mile an hour winds make it well suited for difficult climates domes can be equipped with every component needed for a comfortable stay including a kitchen shower loft and off-grid systems they are available in two sizes 14 feet in diameter with 154 square foot floor space and 20 feet in and then assembled on site all the necessary tools and instructions come included it can be installed in five to six hours by a team of four people with minimum site preparation and no electricity required the unit measures 17.5 square meters or 188 square feet in size the structures steel frame is securely anchored to the ground and clad with tough yet lightweight roof and wall panels made of polyelephant foam treated with uv protection the unit includes four windows 4 ventilation openings and a lockable door a solar panel on the roof generates power to illuminate a built-in lamp as well as power for the charging of electronic devices the modular design of the better shelter also enables alterations in size and layout sections can be added and removed to create different size facilities the shelter can be disassembled moved and reassembled the shelter's expected lifespan is 3 years with basic maintenance the current cost of a unit is 1 150 euros or about 1 360 us dollars and leave their shelter to engage in their community access jobs and participate in other crucial activities the units come in two sizes a 64 square feet two bed unit with a starting price of five and a half thousand dollars and a hundred square feet four bed unit starting at about nine thousand dollars pallet shelters are designed without a kitchen or a bathroom because they are intended to be used in a community setting where these facilities exist on site another reason is that the plumbing is expensive to build and maintain and would drive up the price substantially although the company is currently prototyping a version with a bathroom a larger community room and kitchen facility as well pallet currently does not sell any of its units to one-off customers all employees who build pallet shelters are formally homeless addicted or incarcerated themselves and have found stability through meaningful employment living wage pay and a supportive environment the maggie shelter is a sturdy highly insulated sustainable shelter that is adaptable to all climates it is a new type of temporary shelter that is set up like a tent but acts like a building this is achieved by a double layered skin that can be filled with local materials like sand to create an insulation layer the maggie shelter is designed to serve communal activities medical facilities schools community centers and temperature controlled warehouses in these uses the shelter can foster education and community and provide clean and safe spaces for medical treatment and supply storage the shelter comes as a building kit package that can be set up by six adults in two days all the parts can be mounted from the ground up no cranes or heavy tools are needed the frame is made with extruded aluminum profiles protected against outdoor influences by tough polyester fabric sheets that serve as walls and a roof the fabric is coated with fire retardant windows are made with two layers of transparent fabric with insulating layers of bubble wrap in between the hollow walls and roof of the maggie are filled with local insulating materials such as straw sand or even plastic waste the maggie shelter controls inside temperature by using mass inertia of materials like sand and light insulation boards sand stabilizes temperature fluctuations between day and night and the installation boards keep the optimal temperature inside once achieved the maggie can be upgraded with a fixed floor that uses the same aluminum profiles as the rest of the structure between the beams the floor can also be insulated with
