today it's time for a premiere pro basics tutorial we're going to talk about time remapping or speed ramping in this short episode i will show you a few ways to slow down speed up or even freeze your footage similar to the clip that you're watching now this all is very easy so this video won't take more than a few minutes like i mentioned this is a basic tutorial and even if you use this already in your videos you still might learn something new today so stay tuned ok now let's head over to premiere and start editing inside premiere i've already cut the clip on the timeline it's a 60 frames a second clip and this is the speed ramping that we're going to create this effect will only look good if you use footage with the high number of frames per second i would recommend to use footage of at least 50 or 60 frames a second and also if possible use a high shutter speed to avoid motion blur yes you can absolutely use other footage with lower frames a second but it might give some unwanted artifacts inside premiere you can adjust speed in multiple ways the simplest way is by right clicking on the track and then select speed and duration in the window that pops up you can change the speed to 50 for example and then click ok on the timeline you can see that the clip duration got longer simply because we slowed it down you could also use this same method if you want to speed up the footage to 200 for example i'm going to put it back to the original state because now we're going to apply time remapping or speed wrapping you could do this inside the effects control panel in the time remapping section with keyframes etc but i prefer the next method first you need to create some space to work with on the timeline you could use the alt key combined with the scroll wheel on your mouse to increase or decrease the height of the track another option would be to hover the mouse over the lines until you see this icon and then raise it up now you can see the line on top here which is for opacity when i lower the line it will increase transparency you have probably seen or used this technique before and we're going to apply the same method for speed adjustments and to do this we need to right click on the video track then select show clip keyframes then select time remapping and speed and now you can see a new adjustment line in the middle of the video track if you drag this line up you will get a speed increase and if you drag it down it will slow it down similar to the settings that we applied in the speed and duration menu but here we've got more options first we'll go to the point where we want to start the slowdown inside the clip if you hold the ctrl key on your keyboard then this icon will appear at the mouse pointer and then if you left click on the line it will create a new adjustment point and will create another one at the point where the slow motion should end first we'll zoom in a bit and then drag down this line to create slow motion for only this part of the clip i'll use 25 for this one and we will increase the speed of the other part so it will look even better i'll put that part on 200 and now we've got this difference in speed between the parts of the clip we can create a smooth transition between the two speeds by moving this second adjustment point away from the first one this will create a bit of a ramp now the changes of speeds will go more gradually and if you click on one of the points you will also get these blue handles if you adjust them it will even make it more smoother and let's do the same for the other one and this is what we've got so far the keyframes might need a bit of adjustment to get a better timing if i give the clip a playback you'll see that the slow motion part is a bit choppy but luckily premiere has got a fix for that and it's called optical flow to activate this right click on the video track and then select the time interpolation and then select optical flow and before you start typing in the comments that you can't find it it's only available for cc 2017 or newer after you selected optical flow you can see that this line here has turned to red and in this case that means that we need to render the footage first before we can see the results simply hit the enter key to start rendering and after rendering this is the result that we've cut and now as a quick bonus i'll also show you how to reverse the speed ramp on the timeline i've already got a clip including a speed ramp similar to the one that we just created the only difference is that this one goes all the way down to one percent which make the image freeze so for this one we simply need to find the point where the motion freezes and then we need to cut off the track at that point next we need to duplicate the video hold the alt key combined with your left mouse button and duplicate the track then select the second part right click and select speed and duration and then simply enable the checkbox for reverse speed click ok and then you can see that the clip has been reversed glue the two parts together and render it first because the line is red and there you've got your freeze and reversed speed ramp and that's it for this basics time remapping and speed wrapping tutorial inside premiere pro i hope you enjoyed it and if you did then please give the video a thumbs up that really helps me out a lot let me know in the comments below what other basics premiere pro tutorial you would like to see and also make sure to check out the other premiere pro tutorials that i've got listed here and that's it for now thank you for watching and i hope to see you back soon for more
