SketchUp and CAD Video 2: Creating Walls In the previous video we imported a CAD plan... Turned it into a group and locked it... Then associated the group with scenes and layers. The main tool for this new technique is the rectangle tool. Trace outline of building with the rectangle tool. Trim overlap by with another rectangle and eraser tool. One reason for locking the group is to make erasing easy. Notice that the locked group turns red... and cannot be erased. Push/pull the footprint up to create quick massing model. Or, we can undo, and build interior walls. Use the offset tool to create exterior walls. Again, using the CAD plan as a reference. Now push/pull the walls up. Two things to consider... We could group the model now... to separate interior walls from exterior walls. For this example, we are going to leave the walls together. Now use the rectangle tool to trace out interior walls. Use the eraser tool to remove unnecessary geometry. The line tool is good for small details, but... the rectangle tool is the most efficient for this task. Let's speed the video up to see the task completed. Use the scene tabs to toggle the floor plan on and off. Understanding inferencing makes line tool more efficient. Now the interior walls are drawn. Use the eraser tool to remove unnecessary geometry. Delete edges that are dividing interior and exterior walls. If you missed any edges just toggle floorplan back on. Test your model by using the push/pull auto-select. This helps identify problem areas. Retrace rectangle to divide surfaces again. Use eraser tool to remove unnecessary geometry. Now we can push/pull the walls up. Now we have interior and exterior walls! In the next video we will create doors and windows.
