hi everyone and welcome to two thrifty ladies it's ruth here and the beginning of the video i showed you the completed version of what we're about to do however i haven't done it yet so i don't know what that future picture will look like but here's where we will begin i first we went to martin's and i got this really cool as you see in the beginning panel what i would like to do is to make myself some sort of just a throw quilt to have that uses it so the first thing is first is that i have ironed the panel and got out every wrinkle that i could around the size it looks kind of grungy and that's the cutting job that this door did but that is okay because i am going to re-cut it so what i've done is it measures 22 inches across by 43 from top to bottom and that is allowing for these borders so it's 22 just beyond the black border and what i would kind of like to do is i'm going to slice it i'm going to slice it the same as my jelly roll so i still have the black from a few videos ago jelly rolls so i'm going to incorporate these so i'm not sure how many jelly strips i'll use and if you don't have a black jelly roll you can make your own because really they're just two and a half inch strips length of fabric so right now i have three four five six seven eight strips i don't think i'll use all eight strips but that's what i have ironed and ready to go and what i would like to do is slice the panel so that i can put the jelly roll in between so it adds kind of like an abstract to the skeleton but i also want to make it so it's like not the same like we'll have black up top black a little bit lower and so on and so on so that at first the first thing i did was iron it next thing i'm going to do is to slice it so let's see if i can point my camera down yes i am still new to this hope that was right okay so the first thing that i want to do is i want to i want to make these seams nice or not seams i want to make my edges nice and even so what i'm going to do is i'm going to fold the fabric and this is a panel from 2013 it's the date along the bottom and i had measured it from the orange to orange so i did not include the salvage so i am going to take the selvage off and that will be our first cut now this does not look even at all whatsoever and that's okay i'm going down along the skeleton spine and i'm lining up the salvage white parts so and i know that it's so crooked that it's not going to really look straight anyway so let's make this our first cut you'll probably hear khaleesi she's in the other room watching her tablet but she likes youtube so she'll probably come out to say hello so i'm going to take that salvage off and now i know that that's one straight cut the next thing i want to do is make sure that i want the tips of this so put these two together i'm just gonna turn my mat a little bit [Applause] and i'm not going to cut both sides at the same time because i don't believe that they are even enough to do that so i don't think that i trusted even doing it that way but it should be it looks like it's pretty good so now i'm going to cut this and i want to make sure that i have all the way to the i don't know if you can see this but i want to make sure i have all the way to the edge of that border and i'm going to give it a quarter inch for a quarter inch seam i'm keeping my straight line on the line and there's just enough to give it an extra quarter of an inch down below and then that's kind of where it goes [Music] inward oh well would help if some of it does not hang off the table but that's all right just go over that there we go and i'm going to do the same thing on the other side i want to make sure i get just the edge i hope this isn't too upside down i am cutting it upside down so the skeleton will look pretty straight to you and again i want to go all the way to that border and then from the furthest point i'm going to give it a quarter of an inch seam allowances not straight i know you're saying them try not to talk too much and make this video too long because i know i have a habit of doing that and then that is gone so now [Music] we have a nice straight panel the next thing i want to do is [Music] by measuring it the 22. it's 22 and a half so i was trying to figure out how many inches to go i i don't want the inches too low if i go five inches i guess i could go five and a half and that would give us um that would use up 22 inches so let's let's do it every five and a half inches and see where that takes us and what i think i'll do is find the center point [Music] and start there that way if we don't have too much enough to go evenly well at least we've made some sort of you know i don't know i don't know what i mean but i just want to cut it in half and that's how i'm going to start so i'm going to cut it at 11 inches because that 11 and a half and that would make us about a little over even i'm sure it looks alright i'm sure you've seen it earlier and it looks fine so now i've cut it in half now i want to cut each one into threes so this would be 11 and a half inches so i'm going to cut it at a little over maybe five and three quarters five and not quite five and a half because five and a half five and a half is eleven but we'll still have that half an inch so i'm gonna make it five and three quarters right i'll kind of like it into three let's see by going to three i could do four i think that's what i'll do i think i'll do four we'll do four inches i'm gonna do three and three quarters and that will cover up that half an inch i hope well we'll find out right so i'm gonna do three and three quarters and this does not have to be the same you can have different sizes it's just how i'm choosing to do it your choice could be different than my choice maybe i'll make these a little bit different sizes it really doesn't i'm trying to be even steven and i don't know why all right totally not even steven so now i have my strips cut now what i'm thinking of doing is i would love to add a jelly strip maybe if i can get it off the chair in between each one and this would make it you know a little bit a little bit wider and i love the way that looks but when i was first figuring that out i figured that this would be too wide so i didn't like that so i'm thinking about just making it an inch wide so it would be about a half an inch wide with the quarter inch seam allowances and so this is what it would look like okay then i thought i'm gonna let that paint dry hopefully by tomorrow it's ready and i can start bringing furniture i'm gonna do that so this is how it's going to look which i think is super cool and it adds a whole nother level but that's how and then i thought well maybe i could put maybe i could put some black up at the top and kind of like have him go like a piece here and piece up top and then a piece down the bottom that's how i originally wanted it but i think i'd rather keep him like this with the black in between and then i'm going to put a nice big border on him so to prepare for that for what i am going to do is now i have to cut my jelly strips in half and they're about as long as they're as long as my fabric so it works out good so i'm going to take a moment and i'm just going to cut these jelly rolls in half so i'm going to cut them one and a quarter inch each because they're two and a half inch strips so i'm just going to cut that in half so let's do that i'm going to do that two to five of them so let's do that and i'll be right back okay welcome back so now i'm at my sewing machine i have taken my strips and i'm gonna keep them in order because you would not want them to be in the wrong order and i had cut my jelly strips in half so i went to just come back i've done three rows but i just want to show you what a difference that black stripe in there has i mean to me that is cool because it's it's breaking up the panel but it's adding so this is what three look like and i love it so i'm gonna keep going i just wanted to come in for a minute and see how everybody was make sure you're keeping those even quarter inch seam allowances well you don't have to let's face it if you don't want your black lines these don't have to be as big as i made them you can cut your own strips you can make them and this you know i wish i would have bought more so i could have shared this with everybody but if you're in maine and you're near martin's that's where i get it was three dollars and 12 cents or something like that for the one panel and i absolutely adore it okay i should go get some more i mean you never know maybe i'll go back to martin's i'll have to wait for sue yeah we should go back but anyway halfway through because there's only six and then i'll be back again bye-bye for now so welcome back so i went ahead and i put um on the side i put a i think i'm zooming in and out and i don't really know how to do that but i did put a smaller piece okay so now that i have my strips cut in half and i brought over my panel cuts and you want to make sure that when you transfer your panels to where you're going to be sewing that you don't get them mixed up because you don't want to mix these up and all i'm going to do is take one hat one strip maybe my hands are like ice it's cold here and i'm just gonna sew them because it's solid black i don't have a right side and or a wrong side so i'm just going to make sure i have enough i i'm going above because this still has a salvage end on it so i'm just going a little bit above that because i don't want that showing and all i'm gonna do is sew down a very straight i hope quarter-inch seam allowance and i hope you can see the sewing machine good i'm not using the industrial machine for this i kind of like my jukey a little bit better so and that's all i'm going to do is i'm going to sew it down back tack a little and i'm going to keep a very straight quarter of an inch because where it's only going to be one and a quarter we're taking out the half an inch for seam allowance so we want to try to get it and i'm not pulling on either fabric i'm just holding them together you can sorry if that's loud stop every few little bit to make sure your your things are straight but i'm not pulling on it i'm not tugging on it i'm just kind of holding it kind of taut but not tight and i'm just letting the feed dogs take take it themselves so i'm just going to do this one with you so i can show you where i'm at try and keep it quick sue always says don't make a long video and then i just keep or talking favorite is i confuse myself when i'm trying to explain something so then i feel like i've confused you and more chances are good that i am and that's all i'm doing is following it down to the end and you will have hangover but that's okay because we can we're gonna trim it at the end [Applause] and this is really just to have to have it be wider so then i'm going to take it back up and i'm going to finger press it and i'm going to finger press it towards the dark so i'm going to finger press it towards my black strip i'm just going to finger press it open i'm not going to take it to the machine to the ironing machine the ironing board i'm not going to take it over there to press it you can if you want to i'm not so i'm just finger pressing it this is what it's going to look like see we still have this is the the way edge and that's got the border that i cut the quarter inch because i'm going to lose some of that in the stitching and i pressed finger pressed it open and i pressed it towards the black i mean you can you can press it each way any way you want it's we're not matching this up to anything so we won't have any seams to match up and we won't have any nesting so we don't have to worry about that so the next thing i'm going to do is get my next strip and i'm going to sew it now to the other side of my black strip and i'm just going to lay my new strip right on top because we're going to do right sides together and i'm going to sew that down so i'm going to do this for a few more strips and then i'll be back so that's all we're going to do is put one strip of the the panel one strip of the black and then another panel so i'll meet you back here in a few minutes so i went to just come back i've done three rows but i just want to show you what a difference that black stripe in there has i mean to me that is cool because it's it's breaking up the panel but it's adding so this is what three look like and i love it so i'm gonna keep going just wanted to come in for a minute and see how everybody was make sure you're keeping those even quarter inch seam allowances but you don't have to let's face it if you don't want your black lines these don't have to be as big as i made them you can cut your own strips you can make them and this you know i wish i would have bought more so i could have shared this with everybody but if you're in maine and you're near martin's that's where i got it was three dollars and 12 cents or something like that for the one panel and i absolutely adore it gee i should go get some more i mean you never know maybe i'll go back to martin's i'll have to wait for sue yeah we should go back but anyway halfway through because there's only six and then i'll be back again bye-bye for now okay so here we are right now i did finish putting the panels together i put that smaller size jelly strip in between each panel and i really like that i decided to put another half of jelly strip on each side and then i used sorry my messy table the granddaughter was crafting um anyway so this is what it looks like i then i took a full jelly strip the full length and i put it on each side i put it on the the end first and then on each side so i really like the way this is coming out so now i have to um and it's not as wide because don't forget it was only 22 inches wide we added three quarters of an inch and then i added two and a half inches on each side so it's still not that wide but i did pick up a batik that i liked which is a gray black and white and to me it kind of looked i don't know it looks kind of like spooky-ish so and i only have one yard so what i would like to do is i'm going to put a six inch six or seven inch border on each side and then i will put a four inch border on the top and the bottom so that's what i'm gonna do so i'm gonna i've went ahead and ironed it of course now i got it in one big ball but i did iron it so now i'm gonna cut it so i'm gonna need two six inch wide strips for each side and then two four inch strips for the top one for the top and one for the bottom i mean i just i just love the way this came out because you can still see every aspect i mean even the you can even see that really good i really liked how it came out i like the spacing that we chose we you know you and i so i really like that so both sue and my husband said he looks like he's behind jail bars so but i really like how that came out so now i'm going to cut it uh six inch border for one side six inch border for the other side and then a four inch chopper piece and a four inch bottom piece so i'm gonna go ahead and cut that and i'll be right back okay so i went ahead and i cut my my extra my bigger border and i made six inch border to go down each side and then i made a four inch border to go along each top i'm gonna attach the top first and then the bottom and then i'll put the sides on and they're not quite long enough so i do have to splice them together but that's okay so i'm gonna go back to my sewing machine and we're gonna do this step next so i'll be right back all right so here's the update i went ahead and i added the six inch border on each side and then i i added a four inch border at the top and at the bottom and i'm in love with it i think it came out great but now what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna add another strip of black around all four sides and then my quilt top will be finished and then we'll move on to batting and the backing so that's what i'm going to do right now i'm going to join some strips and i'm going to add them to the outside so i'm going to start by adding them to the top first i don't want to see my full trash i'm going to add them to the top first and then the sides and then i'll be back to show you what what i do next okay so the quilt top is done i did add the black jelly roll strips around the outside so those are two and a half strips and if you don't have a jelly roll you can cut your two and a half inch strips length of fabric and all i did was i took four jelly roll strips and i i sewed them all together and then i just cut at the ends as i went around the corner so this is the completed front and now i'm going to cut my bat in and i'll show you the backing so i'm using the 100 cotton and it's even been cotton i don't know what they call that so it's 100 cotton and it's even got pelted cotton in it so this is what i'm using is about it's not very thick i bought it online at walmart because if you buy the whole bolt and it was one of those flash sales and then it was free shipping and i really like it it's nice and soft and it's warm so this is the batting again this is the backing so let me get these three pieces into a sandwich and we'll continue on so this is the fabric that i chose for the backing and i mean i hope the light is good in here but to me it reminds me of a vintage halloween [Music] that's michelle whose name you're not allowed to mention she thinks she was funny so i really love this backing i've also chosen a thinner cotton cotton batting okay so what i did was i made a sandwich of the top layer the batting and the backing is all three you can see right here the backing the batting and the front of the quilt and i know i'm trying to use this space on my table but i need a bigger space but so here's the three and i went around and i just pinned it about every 12 13 inches and what i'm gonna do now is i'm gonna baste stitch around the edge of the quilt just to hold everything in place and then we're going to do a quilt and what i'm going to do is just i don't want to take up too much away from the design so i'm just going to stitch in the ditch along i'm going to call the jail bars even though they're not jail bars but and then i'm going to go around the border so and here is the backing and so i'm gonna do that now and then i'll be back okay so i've gone ahead and stitched in the ditch along some of the rows i've cut my backing and my batting nice and close here it is so yeah i don't have a lot of um quilting on it but enough to make it a little bit puffy here and there so i'm i'm extremely pleased with how it came out of course i had fabric everywhere it's the other side so now i'm going to put on my binding and for my binding yes i'm going to use some more of my black jelly roll that just doesn't seem to go away i mean i i don't know i keep using it and there's more and more so all this is just from the jelly roll because it makes a lot of mess so i'm going to strip piece these together so it's nice and long and then i'm going to start halfway through on one side leaving enough room for the two pieces to meet i just have i didn't do any quilting on the outside i just went from this in so i still have some pins here and there and i'm going to strip pieces together and i'm going to add the binding and then we'll be back for the final veil but you have already seen it at the beginning of the video but since i haven't finished it yet i'm anxious myself to know what it's going to look like so it's a very cold rainy day here today so pictures will be inside unfortunately but it's another day new day and here we go i'll be back so here it is all completed i absolutely love it i love the black border the binding that i used this is the other side i mean it's just incredible i love the way that it came out i'm gonna have to go back to martin's and get some more of these panels and make some more because as soon as i list this one i do believe on my etsy that it's gonna sell i almost want to keep it but i'd rather just make them and enjoy making them so i'm going to go back to martin's and i'm going to use different color schemes i don't know maybe i'll i don't know how i'll do it but i just love it so there it is i'm using my sister's bed because her light in here is nice and bright and here's the back and to me this is like a vintage halloweeny type material i even got my corners so i love it so if you have any questions or comments go ahead and leave them down below i don't really have a well a printed pattern for this obviously because it's not my panel so just give us a thumbs up don't forget to subscribe and i'll have more sewing projects coming soon
