gather we gather this weekend and celebrate our first birthday as a parish october 17th is a very unique day in the mystery of god's plan because he gave birth through or excuse me he gave birth to john paul the first i don't know if you know that and then yesterday what did we celebrate an anniversary yesterday the anniversary of the election of pope saint john paul ii as pope so the fact that we share these days on this weekend where we're renewing our identity before god as a community is a great blessing to our community so i pray that god fills you with joy and the wonderful mission that he has entrusted to our hands with that in mind let us call to mind our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen [Music] glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king oh god almighty lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you [Music] you alone are the most high jesus christ with the hope spirit in the glory of god [Music] amen let us pray almighty ever living god grant that we may always conform our will to yours and serve your majesty in the sincerity of our hearts through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah the lord was pleased to crush him in infirmity if he gives his life as an offering for sin he shall see his descendants in a long life and will and the will of the lord shall be accomplished through him because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of day through his suffering my servant shall justify many and their guilt he shall bear the word of the lord [Music] lord let your mercy be on us as we place our trust in you lord let your mercy be on us as we place our trust in you upright is the word of the lord and all his works are trustworthy he loves justice and of the kindness of the lord the earth [Music] as we place our trust in you [Music] see the eyes of the lord are upon those who fear him [Music] upon those who hope for his kindness to deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine lord let your mercy be on us as we place our trust our soul waits for the lord who is our help and our shield may your kindness o lord be upon us [Music] lord let your mercy be on us as we place our trust in you [Music] a reading from the letter to the hebrews brothers and sisters since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens jesus the son of god let us hold fast to our confession for we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses but one who has similarly been test tested in every way yet without sin so let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help the word of the lord oh [Music] hallelujah [Music] is [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to your lord jesus summoned the twelve and said to them you know that those who are recognized as rulers over the gentiles warded over them and their great ones make their authority over them felt but it shall not be so among you rather whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all for the son of man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as ransom for many the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ my dear brothers and sisters this weekend we can draw a very clear theme in all of the readings that we have from the first reading to the responsorial psalm to the second reading and the gospel by identifying the importance of self-offering the whole sense of offering oneself for something greater when we think of self-denial we look into the sanctuary of every church and it's something that we also wear around our necks many of us and we see the mystery of the cross from the very beginning of our baptism the very beginning of our journey with christ the priest signed the cross on your forehead and then following after the priest your parents and godparents signed you with the mystery of the cross so that our lives would be conformed to this mystery and from this mystery we may learn how we can truly live live to the very fullest capacity of our humanity god from all eternity entered into our midst in the person of jesus christ our savior and we look to jesus as fully expressing what it means to live and in the midst of the church we have a lasting icon placed before us in the cross we see the fullness of our humanity revealed for jesus shows true self-denial and self-offering where would we be without the instructional tool of the cross many of you circumstantially has suffering you have suffering but do you look at that suffering as an instrument do you realize that you have been blessed and commissioned signed with the cross as a crusader crusade crusade means cruse is cross you're commissioned as a missionary of the cross crusader being sent and commissioned and set into motion with the power and the authority to embrace your cross and to follow after him means that the fullness of your humanity can only be discovered when you yourself participate in the cross lifting your eyes up and making a self-offering yourself so as we reflect on these scriptures we realize the importance of this self-offering this past week we celebrated the memorial of someone who is well on his way to canonization he was beatified and named the saint of the internet he was born in 1991 died at the age of 15 years old and lived an impressive life if you don't know who this person is i highly recommend you listen with both ears when i tell you his name so that you can research him and put his name into google when you leave today his name carlo a cuties carlo a cuties such wisdom for a young man he learned the mystery of the cross and lived it out beautifully i'd like to share a couple of quotes with you he said when we look at ourselves we become sad but when we lift up our eyes to god and to our neighbor we become happy filled with joy isn't that interesting what wisdom from a young teenager especially the whole mystery of not looking at oneself and he's the saint of the internet we're so many of our social media circles and so many of your posts are about yourself right you post it and then you check it you put up a picture i mean i've done this before let's just face it i'm just gonna be honest right i'm just gonna be honest and then we wait one like two likes three likes more four likes five likes a hundred likes oh right and we begin to look at ourselves through all of these filters all of these color changes all of these postures and what are we looking for we're looking within we're looking at ourselves in a false image and we want to be happy we want to be filled with joy but in the process of constantly checking your phone every amount of happiness and joy is stripped from your soul why yeah right why let's ask the saint of the internet when you look at yourself your life will be filled with sadness when you look toward others and you lift your eyes to god your life will be filled with joy what a beautiful reflection isn't that true for you though when you're ever going through like a really rough patch and you're suffering and you're struggling and you feel like you're all alone you're isolated nobody understands what i'm going through nobody but then when we recognize somebody else's suffering because their suffering is way worse our hearts open up and dilate don't they and we begin to get out of ourselves and and we recognize your suffering is more important than mine so i'm going to stop looking at myself and i'm going to look at you right all suffering ceases when you walk into a pediatric oncology wing in a hospital all suffering ceases right so my brothers and sisters if god becomes man and shows us the fullness of our potential and our happiness rests in self-denial and self-offering maybe he's trying to tell us something and he's trying to help us it's what he's expressing in the gospel passage today to the apostles stop serving yourself and holding authority over everybody in your life stop holding authority over your spouse stop holding people in and focusing on what you want or what you expect or what you're trying to control there's no happiness in that there's no joy but open your eyes up to the plight and poverty of your spouse and be present to it don't fix it because you can't be there hold them walk with them these things my brothers and sisters we fulfill the plan that god has for our life because essentially we're embracing the cross and we're moving forward and we're not allowing our own personal suffering to slow us down if god brings about suffering in our life he means not for us to just go through the suffering he means for us to grow through the suffering it's where we become strong and what is our strength the fact that while we are suffering we have the ability to lift our eyes up from ourselves and focus on another that's it that's the mystery and that is the invitation from christ so i want you to look at the cross of jesus christ for a moment and if we're talking about joy i want you to look beyond the torture beyond the suffering because in his eyes when he looks out at the poverty of our humanity and how easily we are misled and manipulated he lifts up his eyes in a form of self-offering so that he may be that lasting icon for us to look through into the heavenly reality and see how we ought to live while we are here so that we may have joy so i want you to look to the cross and see the joy of jesus christ in his self-offering he is realizing what he is doing what did he say to his mother along the via crutches he said behold mother i make all things new he knew exactly what he was doing the conviction in the midst of his suffering to turn his eyes away from himself to others is the art of living life well and my friends you and i we need to be reminded of that that's why it's important to come to church every week let alone every day for us daily communicants i need it every day because trust me i forget constantly because there's so many provocations in the world that are visible and invisible and those provocations lead me to focus on myself but we have to eliminate those provocations kids the only reason i am on youtube the only reason i am on social media is for you because trust me i don't want to be there but that's where you are you're searching for something you'll never find ever you can find it here i promise you that that's why i'm a priest and that's why i'm offering up my life to proclaim the power and authority of jesus and his teachings to bring you fullness and joy so i encourage you eliminate the provocation you know what i mean because you're the one up at two o'clock in the morning still scrolling and messaging and you're exhausted and you're alone and you're isolated and you're probably having an anxiety attack maybe even right now because i'm talking about it nobody in this world or on social media will tell you how unique and beautiful you are can i tell you another quote from carlo acutis oh thank you thank you thank you he said all of us were born originals but many of us die as photocopies is that not powerful all of us are born as originals unrepeatable unique but many of us throw that uniqueness away throw our original sense of identity away and we become photocopies especially now in a social media driven world we could see how that can happen right oh no father i follow a hundred thousand people okay it's not about me and the people i follow you know they're gonna show me how to live life and live it well okay because i am fabulous fabulous fabulous fabulous right and we take picture after picture after picture and picture and we try to imitate and imitate and imitate and imitate and we wear the same clothing clothing clothing clothing the same makeup makeup how do you do that makeup i don't know let me go on youtube and figure it out i'm just trying to fit in i'm just trying to get in the mold i'm trying to be beautiful in the eyes of others i'm trying to get likes i'm trying to get loves i'm trying to get reposts i'm trying to get instant famous and all of the like and where does that leave you broken and a photocopy of somebody you are not and when you look at yourself in that photocopy form you know what happens you hate yourself that's why suicidal ideation is through the roof provocation get rid of the provocation and start looking toward an icon an image that would actually transform your ideology and begin to guide you more securely to the fulfillment of what can be accomplished through embracing the instrument of the cross and making an offering of ourselves to those who are suffering and making an offering to god of a life well-lived let us profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us man and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen father with hearts centered on your kingdom and receiving your instruction and teaching we lift up our prayers and the needs of our community for the holy father pope francis bishop estevez priests deacons and all religious that they may continue to serve the church faithfully through their constant witness of mercy and compassion we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that jesus who redeemed us by suffering and bore our guilt may call back to the sacraments of his mercy those who have abandoned their faith especially those dear to us we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all of us sharing in this eucharist standing by the cross through which jesus justified us that we may receive him humbly ready to serve at his side we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that the kindness of the lord may be upon our faithfully parted ones who have put their trust in him bringing them into the joy of his kingdom we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer let us take a moment and lift our eyes from our own personal needs our own personal wants or how we're feeling let's think of somebody that we know is suffering in our life something that's suffering in our community and let's lift them up in prayer that god may strengthen and inspire them father in your mercy respond to these prayers and petitions the ones we have given voice to and the ones we hold deep in our hearts as we present them confidently through christ our lord amen today's collection is our regular offertory collection please pass the baskets towards the outside aisle for the ushers to collect and return the empty baskets to the center thank you our operatory hymn is number 702 prayer of saint francis [Music] make me [Music] is [Music] make me let me bring [Music] is [Music] to be understood with all of us [Music] it [Music] is in giving of ourselves that we receive and in time that we're born to eternal life pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father us lord we pray a sincere respect for your lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for we know it belongs to your boundless glory that you came to the aid of mortal beings with your divinity and even fashioned for us a remedy out of mortality itself that the cause of our downfall might become the means of our salvation through christ our lord through him the host of angels adores your majesty and rejoices in your presence forever may our voices we pray join with theirs in one chorus of exultant praise as we acclaim [Music] holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory [Music] oh no in the highest [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving you thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] when we eat this bread and drink this car we proclaim your death oh lord until you come again [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and felipe our bishop and all of the clergy remember also all of our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and martyrs and all of the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages that we may also merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always let us now offer each other a sign of peace [Music] ah take away the sins of
